Honestly they should just air entire seasons of shows that were Paramount Plus given the current strikes.

The old one or two episode tease.

That’s “Trekkers” and yes.

You’re showing your age. We originals are Trekkies. And of course, I’m showing my age too. — If you went to the original cons in the 70s, you’re a Trekkie. And if you bought excellent replicas of phasers and tricorders from a man named James T. Kirk who drove a van that was painted to look like the shuttlecraft, you’re a super Trekkie. — We super geeknerd Trekkies and those cons kept the show alive.

You’re welcome.

+125 TVLine Power User points (no cash value) — Trekkie mgmt.

He i’m a second generation fan minor since day one major since Voyager. Inhereted my mom’s books one which was signed by the author does that make me a Trekkie?

The only thing that can make you a Trekkie is a desire to be one. You sound eminently qualified for the title.

Robbing broadcasting to pay for streaming and robbing streaming to pay for broadcasting.

Why not just air the whole first season of strange new world?? U did it with Star Trek discovery during the first year of Covid

Plus, they already put that whole first season on YouTube for free to help launch season 2 on P+.

They have to pay or do new contracts depending on previous contracts signed. Streaming and prime time different money paid out. Also discovery even season 2, the pike year didn’t do great so would probably be better to burn thru criminal minds, seal team, and Yellowstone 1st.

Granted discovery was on with little promo on 10p thur a time slot that’s always an issue

They already played the whole first season of SNW on Pluto TV for free. And the first episode of S2 was also available for free on Paramount.

They should’ve been airing ALL the Star Trek Shows on CBS or one of their Networks from the start to show proper honor to Gene Roddenberry’s legacy! Gatekeeping Star Trek behind a paywall like they have been doing is just a show of greed.

First contact day is just something Paramount+/CBS All Access came up with 3 Yrs ago to promote their streaming show and new things you could buy. Don’t remember any Trek fans celebrating this in the past 40 Yrs I’ve been alive. Maybe we might care on the date listed in the shows 4/5/2063.

Love you coming tomorrow broadcast. Some of us flat out refuse to stream but miss our favorite who have abandoned mainstream.

I love it, but after the two episodes, where do I watch any continuations?..im not on paramount+…so it’s a teaser for those of us who don’t have paramount+..why can’t it stay on CBS?

It stinks that we only get 2 episodes. The original series was on FREE TV and now they want us to pay for it. You CBS execs don’t get it do you, you will make way more money in ad revenue on free TV than you will ever make on pay-per-view. I might would watch the commercials if you get more than drug ads.

So in conclusion I hope you overly paid execs choke on your pay services this year as you won’t have any new showes due to the strike. Us as viewers I hope won’t help your bloted salaries by paying for a service that was once ad supported, and I also hope the advertisers won’t continue to pay for ads on reruns.

From a disgruntled viewer!!!

From low-budget romps to high-energy blockbuster films, Star Trek has become one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of all time. While Trek has decades worth of TV, film, and animated iterations that might rival Star Wars , it also has its own unique legacy and long-time, passionate cult following.

With the release of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, the Trek television universe has become one of the highlights of original programming on CBS All Access , the network’s streaming platform. Unlike Kevin Feige ‘s aggressive rollout of new shows for Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+, CBS All Access has done particularly well with releasing short series over the past few years for this newest wave of Star Trek . Helmed by Alex Kurtzman, series like Star Trek: Lower Decks and Picard have pushed the boundaries of what can be done with the universe’s canon in their first seasons so far.

From the new releases to the old adventures of the Star Trek Enterprise , Deep Space 9 , Voyager , and more, CBS All Access is your hub for all things Trek.

Where To Watch Every Star Trek TV Show and Movie in Order

Published on.

cbs star trek shows

Rachel Ulatowski

Official JustWatch writer

Paramount has ushered in a new era of Star Trek. Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery , the studio ordered multiple new series and began developing the TV movie Star Trek: Chapter 31 , which will star Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh. Given its revitalization, now is the perfect time to delve into the franchise. This guide will demonstrate where and how to watch every Star Trek movie and TV show in order.

The Star Trek franchise began in 1966 with the premiere of Star Trek , also known as Star Trek: The Original Series. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the sci-fi series follows Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) as they guide the Enterprise on a mission of intergalactic space exploration. While the show received poor ratings during its three-season run, broadcast syndication and reruns breathed new life into the franchise, garnering it a cult following after its 1969 cancelation.

Following the show’s re-evaluation, Roddenberry convinced Paramount to continue the original series on the big screen with Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Although it wasn’t a huge box-office hit, it did well enough to earn five more sequels, for which Roddenberry was a consultant.

As Star Trek: The Original Series remained one of the most popular syndicated TV shows years after its release, Paramount and Gene Roddenberry began working on another live-action series: Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series takes place aboard a new Enterprise one century after the events of the original series, with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) at the helm. Along with his crew, Captain Picard carries on his predecessors' mission of exploring new worlds.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also continued on the big screen after its conclusion, receiving four feature films. While films like Star Trek: First Contact were well-received, Star Trek: Nemesis was a critical and financial failure. The failure of Star Trek: Nemesis was followed by another blow as the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled amid low ratings.

Paramount switched directions on the big screen and released what many consider a “reboot” trilogy. However, the films aren’t an official reboot as they merely explore an alternate timeline known as the Kelvin Timeline and see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto take over as Captain Kirk and Spock, respectively.

While the Kelvin Timeline film series played out, Star Trek went on a hiatus on the small screen. After a 12-year break, Paramount revived the franchise, aiming to create Star Trek shows specifically for its streaming service, CBS All Access (now Paramount+). In 2017, it released Star Trek: Discovery, followed by a new round of shows, including Star Trek: Picard , which continued Captain Picard’s story after Star Trek: The Next Generation.

There are no signs of the franchise slowing down, with the first TV movie, Star Trek: Chapter 31, on the way and Paramount showing interest in further Star Trek TV films, theatrical films, and shows.

How to watch the Star Trek franchise in order

Viewers can watch the Star Trek franchise either by release date order or chronologically. Those hoping to watch chronologically should know that the Kelvin Timeline trilogy takes place outside of the timeline of the other shows and movies, so they can technically be watched at any point. Star Trek: Short Treks also does not fit in the chronological order as it is an anthology series. Additionally, viewers may have to jump between shows occasionally due to time jumps in series like Star Trek: Discovery.

See below for the chronological order of every Star Trek show and movie:

Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise and its crew. The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, roughly during the 2260s. The crew is headed by Captain James T. Kirk, first officer Spock, and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy. Shatner's voice-over introduction during each episode's opening credits stated the starship's purpose: The series was produced from 1966-67 by Desilu Productions, and by Paramount Television from 1968-69. Star Trek aired on NBC from September 8, 1966 to June 3, 1969. Although this television series had the title of Star Trek, it later acquired the retronym of Star Trek: The Original Series to distinguish the show within the media franchise that it began. Star Trek's Nielsen ratings while on NBC were low, and the network canceled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. Nevertheless, the show had a major influence on popular culture and it became a cult classic in broadcast syndication during the 1970s. The show eventually spawned a franchise, consisting of five additional television series, 12 theatrical films, and numerous books, games, toys, and other products.

The best Paramount Plus Star Trek shows, plus a look at the shows to come

Published on July 1, 2021

star trek image

Since September 1966, the Star Trek universe has become one of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time. While others — particularly Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe — are perhaps more popular, it was Star Trek that led the way decades ago. Its legions of fans would not let this low budget three-season series disappear. This has led to 13 feature films, six additional live action TV series, and even an animated series, with more to come.

While there have been lots of Trek feature films, most people associate Star Trek with its many TV series incarnations. While you can find some Star Trek shows on platforms like Hulu and Netflix, Paramount Plus (previously known as CBS All Access) is the place to go if you want access to every Star Trek show.

Read more : Paramount Plus – Everything you need to know

The reasons why Star Trek has lasted this long as a major mainstream franchise are varied. Its many popular characters are one reason, along with its main themes of exploring space, cooperation with a variety of races and species, and more. It’s sometimes hard to believe that that it all started on a small Hollywood soundstage in late 1964, when the first of two pilots for the original series started filming.

With that in mind, here are the best Paramount Plus Star Trek shows you can stream right now. We will also take a look at all the announced Paramount Plus Star Trek shows that are planned for the future. You can sign up for the service at the link below, with a seven-day free trial.

Best Paramount Plus Star Trek shows:

Deep space nine.

  • The Next Generation
  • The Original Series
  • Lower Decks
  • The Animated Series

Editors note: We will update this post when new Star Trek shows on Paramount Plus are officially launched and completed.

star trek deep space nine

This might be a surprising choice for some people, including some fans. However, in our humble opinion, Deep Space Nine deserves this top spot on our best Star Trek shows list. It was the first Trek series with a black lead actor. Until Star Trek: Picard came along, it was also the only Trek series that wasn’t centered on a single starship. Being set on a remote space station allowed this series to go in different directions compared to other Trek series. It took on a ton of themes that actually make it relevant to watch today, including diversity, the use of misinformation in society, and much more.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Best sci-fi shows on Netflix Star Trek

Newer Trek fans might remember that when TNG first debuted way back in 1987, it got slammed by fans, mostly because it didn’t star the actors and characters of the original series. It took nearly three years for the show to find its own voice. For the rest of its run, TNG helped expand Star Trek beyond its base of TOS Trekkies. It presented us with great characters like the human-aspiring android Data, the complex Klingon Worf, and especially the level headed, but still determined, Captain Picard. TNG expanded the Trek universe by introducing us to its best alien villains, the Borg, along with making the Klingons more than just a violent warrior race. It still holds up today.

Star Trek: The Original Series

the original series

The Original Series will always hold a special place in the hearts of many long time Star Trek fans, if only because it was the first one out of the gate. Back in 1966, serious science fiction on television was found on anthology shows like the original The Twilight Zone (also on Paramount Plus) and The Outer Limits. TOS was the first adult sci-fi series with a recurring cast and setting. The look of the original U.S.S. Enterprise, and the many planets on its travels, definitely has a dated look (even with the remastered visual effects). However, the stories (at least from the first two seasons) still hold up, and Leonard Nimoy’s performance as Spock still stands out above the crowd.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

While there have been comedic episodes in various Star Trek series, Lower Decks is the first full-blown situation comedy set in this universe. Created by major Trek fan Mike McMahan (a former writer for Rick and Morty and the co-creator of Solar OPPOsites for Hulu ), this series examines the characters who are on board the U.S.S. Cerritos during the TNG/DS9/VOY era. The twist is the main characters of this show are not the captain or the bridge crew of this ship, but a group of lower-ranked crewmen who still have to deal with various alien and internal issues. While this series is a little mixed, Trek fans will likely smile, and even laugh out loud, when they watch this show. It’s extremely faithful to the source material but still manages to make fun of the franchise with a wink in its eyes. You can check out its second season on August 12, 2021.

Star Trek: Picard

star trek picard

The latest live action Trek series was something of a mixed bag in its first season. On the plus side, Sir Patrick Stewart is excellent as always, playing an older version of his TNG character. Picard remains a character who always searches for the truth in any situation, no matter how painful that truth might be. His main task is to find out the secret of a woman who apparently is an artificial being but just doesn’t know it yet. Isa Briones plays this character Dahj with both a wide-eyed innocence as well as terror (in fact, she plays multiple characters, but that’s going into spoiler territory). The visual effects of this series are the best ever made for a Trek TV show as well. On the downside, it takes far too long for this series’ story to actually get underway, and quite frankly there are lots of characters to keep up with that we don’t really care about. Hopefully, for Picard’s second season in 2022, we will get a more focused storyline, fewer characters, and more on Picard himself.

star trek voyager

The idea behind this series was a good one; push a Federation starship into a region of space that had never before been explored, with no backup from any other Starfleet vessels. It promised us new things to see in the Trek universe, and also a chance to see how Federation values would be tested when the crew didn’t have anyone to answer to. Unfortunately, while there are a number of good Voyager episodes to watch, this series basically turned into “The Next Generation: Phase Two.” It was (mostly) the same old stories and situations we have seen before (indeed, there were more than a few episodes that connected directly with TNG). Despite excellent performances from Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway and Robert Picardo as the ship’s holographic doctor, Voyager was a missed opportunity.

star trek discovery

This was the first of the live-action Paramount Plus Star Trek shows. Discovery is supposed to take place roughly a decade before the adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock in The Original Series. However, we have to wonder why the creators and producers of this show decided on this particular timeline for this series. It just feels like they used a dartboard, and the “10 years before TOS” was the section that was hit by the dart. As a result, Discovery feels like a mix of old Trek references and new storylines and formats. It just doesn’t jell well.

That’s not to say the show is all bad. Sonequa Martin-Green does an excellent job playing the rebellious Starfleet officer Michael Burnham. She has to learn some lessons herself even as she has to earn the trust of the crew of the Discovery. Jason Isaacs is excellent as Discovery’s mysterious captain Lorca and Doug Jones does his usual terrific performance, under lots of makeup, as the alien Saru. In the second season, we get treated to Anson Mount, who plays Christopher Pike, the Enterprise’s captain before Kirk, and he makes us believe in heroic Starfleet leaders again. Ethan Peck is also introduced as a young Spock, and he does an admirable job.

At the end of the second season, we saw the Discovery time-warping 900 years into the future. Free from having to meld its storylines into previous Trek continuity, Discovery told a story of a galaxy that no longer is governed by the Federation. That’s because an event in the past destroyed most of the galaxy’s dilithium crystals, which are needed for most ships to travel at warp speed. The season is devoted to figuring out what happened during “The Burn”, how to reverse its effects and restore the Federation. While it’s an improvement, the show still doesn’t have the rawest of the original series or the sense of wonder that TNG has. It will be interesting to see how the show evolves again during its upcoming fourth season.

star trek enterprise

This show seemed like a bad idea from the start. A show that takes place 100 years before Kirk and Spock, and even before the formation of the Federation? It seemed like something that could have been done in a movie, or at most a mini-series. In the end, Enterprise was an even more watered-down version of TOS and TNG, although it did get somewhat better in the final two seasons of its four-season run. Scott Bakula is always good, and he does the best that he can as Captain Archer, but this show, with the exception of a few episodes, is mostly not worth your time.

Star Trek: The Animated Series

animated series

A few years after TOS was canceled, Filmation got the rights to create a Saturday morning animated series based on the original show, with most of the cast returning to voice their roles. It was an admirable effort, with some episodes written by many of the writers of TOS. In the end, this series is more of a curiosity than anything else. It looks and feels even more dated than the live-action series in terms of visuals, and the restrictions of Saturday morning cartoons kept the storylines from being as good as the original show. This is yet another missed opportunity.

New Star Trek series on Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus will be the exclusive home to at least three new Star Trek series.

Strange New Worlds

strange new worlds

This is a planned spinoff of Discovery that will take place onboard the original U.S.S. Enterprise, just a few years before Captain James Kirk takes command. Anson Mount will return as Captain Christopher Pike, as well as Ethan Peck as the young Ensign Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. This show will hopefully learn from the lessons of Enterprise and Voyager, with a mix of cool new encounters combined with some nods to the TOS era. There’s no release date yet for this series.

prodigy

Originally set to debut on the Nickelodeon cable channel, this will now be a Paramount Plus Star Trek series. It’s also the first Trek show that was created specifically for kids. The 3D animated show will center on a group of children who find an abandoned Starfleet ship, and decide to take it and go on adventures on their own. Kate Mulgrew will return to voice her Voyager role of Captain Janeway in this series, or rather a hologram version of Janeway. There’s no word on when Prodigy will debut.

section 31

This is yet another planned Discovery spin-off, this time focusing on the mysterious, and sometimes evil, Federation agency known as Section 31. Michelle Yeoh, who played the Mirror Universe leader Emperor Georgiou, is expected to be the lead for this series. You may remember that Emperor Georgiou, after crossing over to the main universe, joined Section 31. There’s still no launch date for this series.

That’s our look at the current and new Star Trek series on Paramount Plus.

The Star Trek universe kicked off in 1966 with the original series , created by science fiction visionary Gene Roddenberry , and later exploded into a massive film and TV juggernaut.

While the original series, which starred William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, saw only three seasons, it made an indelible impression on the sci-fi genre. Live-action TV follow-up Star Trek: The Next Generation , with  Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard leading an ensemble cast, captivated viewers from 1987–1994 and inspired three more series that would air within the next decade:  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ,  Star Trek: Voyager , and  Star Trek: Enterprise .

Starting with 1979’s  Star Trek: The Motion Picture , Paramount Pictures has been regularly cranking out Trek films with the original series and Next Generation casts, as well as a rebooted version in 2009 with Chris Pine as Starfleet Academy cadet James Kirk and Zachary Quinto as young Spock. ( See the Star Trek films ranked here. )

In 2017,  Trek  returned to small screens with season 1 of CBS All Access streaming title  Star Trek: Discovery , set during a tumultuous wartime era about a decade before the original and starring Sonequa Martin-Green . The new series marked a TV franchise reboot by Alex Kurtzman , writer on the 2009 Star Trek film and its sequel  Star Trek Into Darkness .

The year 2020 gave fans a celebration of one of its most iconic characters with the premiere of Star Trek: Picard and Stewart reprising his role in the new streaming series that launched its second season in 2022. New live-action series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was also released in 2022, and its first season was quickly Certified Fresh with a 100% Tomatometer score (it has since dropped to 99% on one review). The show’s second season, released in 2023, was nearly as well received and is Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer.

The TV franchise has since introduced two animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks , about the misfit support crew on one of Starfleet’s least-important ships, and kid-friendly Star Trek: Prodigy , which tells the story of a diverse group of teens who inadvertently become the crew of a prize starship and learn important lessons in their subsequent adventures. The latter series — No. 3 on our list below — has since been canceled by Paramount+, but a petition to save the show has gathered over 33,000 signatures.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Complete

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek Is About to Boldly Go Where It’s Never Gone Before: Netflix

For Trekkies old and new, the highly anticipated Prodigy Season 2 will be worth the wait.

Ma'jel and Dal in 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2.

Dan and Kevin Hageman seem relieved.

It makes sense. The brother duo behind the first Lego Movie and Trollhunters scored a big win back in 2021 when their Star Trek series Prodigy got picked up by Paramount+ and Nickelodeon. But despite signing a two-season deal, Star Trek: Prodigy was quietly canceled after Season 1 — until Netflix swooped in. Now, we’re just days away from the Season 2 premiere , so it’s no surprise that the look on the Hageman Brothers’ faces reads as a mix of glee and exhaustion.

“We’re very excited to be able to tell this story,” Kevin Hageman tells Inverse .

Over Zoom, the Hageman Brothers seem less like siblings and more like two friends who’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons with each other for decades. Kevin clearly wants to be the DM, while Dan is the guy who wants the quest to get bonkers. When it comes to crafting epic, animated projects, this geeky dynamic clearly gets he job done. But now, it’s up to the algorithmic streaming gods to decide Prodigy’s fate.

“I think it really all rests on the success of the Netflix platform,” Kevin says.

Star Trek: Prodigy began as a newcomer’s introduction to the massive canon of Star Trek, but Season 2 hits the ground at proto-warp speed with most of the main cast — Dal (Brett Gray), Jankom (Jason Mantzoukas), Rok (Rylee Alazraqui), Murf (Dee Bradley Baker), Zero (Angus Imrie), and Gwyn (Ella Purnell) — all, more or less, assigned to Starfleet duties. However, any cozy status quo is quickly up-ended by even more time-travel shenanigans than in the first season. It’s a big, surprising season-long arc, but the Hagemans were determined to sneak in some classic Star Trek standalone stories, too.

Dan Hageman hopes that’s enough to win over not just Netflix’s massive audience but the hardcore Trekkies. He says he’ll know Season 2 was a success “if it really sticks in the grill of the Star Trek fandom.”

So ahead of this historic drop — the first time that 20 new Star Trek episodes will be available all at once — Inverse caught up with the Hageman Brothers to talk about the flavor of Prodigy Season 2, balancing episodic adventures with an epic serialized arc, how the show fits into Star Trek canon, and their hopes for the future.

Star Trek’s Greatest Hits

Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2.

Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is back in Prodigy Season 2. But it’s not only Voyager references this season.

“Going into Season 2, we wanted to continue with that idea of what are the greatest hits [of Star Trek]?” Kevin says. “What are concepts and episode ideas that we can introduce to new fans that make up that Star Trek DNA? But we also we found ourselves it is a little more serialized, so the challenge was how to do that and also wrap up a lot of these bigger stories.”

In addition to introducing a new regular Vulcan character named Ma’jel (Michaela Dietz) — who is clearly inspired by Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the late “ First Lady of Star Trek” — Prodigy Season 2 has a slew of Trekkie greatest-hits moments. Without getting into any big-time spoilers, these include parallel universes, some classic aliens for The Original Series , a big shout-out to the 1986 film The Voyage Home , at least one doppelgänger dilemma, and a lot of time travel.

But in addition to creating a diversity of very different stories and completing a bigger arc, Prodigy Season 2 is also a kind of Rosetta Stone for a certain point in the Star Trek timeline. Because Season 2 takes place mostly in 2384, aspects of Lower Decks and Picard canon are fully addressed and integrated. ( Lower Decks occurs between 2380 and 2383, while the earliest Picard Season 1 flashbacks happen in 2385. But the way Starfleet feels in the early days of Picard’s 2380s has seemed a bit incongruous with Lower Decks and Prodigy. In Prodigy Season 2, there’s a very deliberate fix for that.)

“We always wanted Prodigy to embrace the whole canon of Star Trek.”

It’s also worth noting that while Admiral Janeway didn’t appear in Picard Season 3, Prodigy Season 2 elucidates her post- Voyager role a little more clearly. In fact, because Prodigy Season 2 includes recurring roles from Voyager regulars The Doctor (Robert Picardo) and Chakotay (Robert Beltran), it’s tempting to think of the series as a follow-up to that version of Trek, rather than a midquel between Lower Decks and Picard . But for the showrunners, Prodigy’s canonical scope is bigger than either of those options.

“Everyone would say, oh, it’s like a Voyager spinoff, and we were like, no, we’re not a Voyager spinoff,” Dan says. “We are Voyager- adjacent just because Janeway is one of our leads. But we always wanted Prodigy to embrace the whole canon of Star Trek. The things that pop up are things that happen in that timeline.”

Major Trek Twists

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 19: Angus Imrie, Kevin Hageman, Dan Hageman, Kate Mulgrew, Ella Purnell and ...

Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman (center), with some of the Prodigy cast including Angus Imrie, Kate Mulgrew, Ella Purnell, and director Ben Hibon in 2022.

The specifics of these events from elsewhere in the Star Trek pantheon range from minor Easter eggs to major events. And some twists and details have been planned since 2021, well before Picard Season 2 or Season 3 aired. The Hagemans reveal that, three years ago, with multiple Trek projects in production, they were in contact with other Star Trek showrunners to make sure Prodigy not only lined up with the rest of canon but also expanded upon a few specific plot points.

“We were all talking and sharing what we were planning and making sure we were all in sync,” Kevin says. “So there was some collaboration.”

By the final episode of Prodigy Season 2, several aspects of Star Trek are fully connected, but there’s also an open-ended notion that the series could continue in some way, shape, or form. But will there be a Prodigy Season 3? The Hageman brothers offer a surprising response.

“Just a lot of dreaming on Season 3,” Kevin says. “Maybe it’s something that happens down the line. I could see something happening in 10 years. Maybe sooner.”

“Maybe there’s a live-action version of it,” Dan adds. “We’re hoping.”

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 hits Netflix on July 1.

After 58 Years, Star Trek Is Finally Killing Off Scotty - Theory Explained

Zoe saldana: uhura in j.j. abrams’ star trek movies explained, star trek confirms the jaw-dropping final fate of doctor m'benga's daughter.

  • Star Trek's Council of the Gods is unveiled in Star Trek #21, composed of beings from across the franchise's history.
  • The Council of the Gods meets to discuss matters of universal importance.
  • The Pleroma and the Council may not be as safe as they think, with both Kahless and Lore still on the loose.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #21!

For months, Star Trek has dropped tantalizing hints about the Pleroma, and now it stands revealed in all its glory, and is composed of members from across the franchise’s 58-year history. In Star Trek #21, Captain Sisko and the Theseus enter the Pleroma, and are greeted with an awe-inspiring sight: gods from across the franchise, gathered to decide on matters of universal importance.

Star Trek #21 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. Sisko and his senior officers are brought before the gods in the Pleroma, who have gathered to debate on the Organian issue. A text piece, made to resemble a Starfleet briefing, lists each of the gods on the council. Among those present are Trelane, Apollo, Charlie Evans and the Metrons, from the original Star Trek, as well as Kevin Uxbridge from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Caretaker, who kicked off Star Trek:Voyager, is also among the gods.

Star Trek's Gods Are Facing a Threat Unlike Any Other

The council of gods is a historic development in the star trek universe.

In late 2022, IDW relaunched their line of Star Trek comics, creating a massive, franchise-spanning “god war.” The Klingon Emperor Kahless launched a campaign against the gods, slaughtering them with a powerful weapon. Captains Sisko and Worf were able to stop Kahless’ plans for the time being, but the damage had been done. Sisko and the crew of the Theseus traveled to the Pleroma to help fix the damage, but found themselves faced with a chilly reception. T’Lir, who was revealed to be the last of the god-like Organians, was seeking the restoration of his powers.

The introduction of the Pleroma may rank as one of the most important developments in the Star Trek franchise. In the various shows and movies, the crew often encounter god-like beings, and this stretches back to the franchise’s first days. The Pleroma gives these beings new depth, showing that they are, in many ways, just another race in the Star Trek universe. The gods of the universe have their own laws and governance, much like the Federation. However, the gods are obviously working on a far greater scale, meeting to decide the fates of entire species.

The Pleroma May Not Be the Safe Haven It Appears to Be

Will kahless or lore find the pleroma.

Yet, as Star Trek’s god war has shown, these beings can be killed. Both Kahless and Lore are still on the loose, and the Pleroma would make a highly desirable target for them. Furthermore, Section 31 gave Lily Sato a mysterious device to be used at a later date, perhaps suggesting the shady agency has an interest in the Pleroma. The gods of the Pleroma proceed as if they are invulnerable and infallible, but Kahless has thrown all of this into doubt. Despite its great power and elusive nature, the Pleroma may soon be under siege.

Star Trek #21 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!

All 10 TOS And TNG Star Trek Movies Returning To Paramount+ In July

cbs star trek shows

| June 27, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 57 comments so far

While the classic Star Trek TV series have all settled in at Paramount+, the Star Trek movies have continued to bounce around. However, as of next week they are coming back to the streaming service that purports to be “the home of Star Trek” in the USA.

All the movies in one place

At the beginning of this year, the six TOS-era Star Trek movies ( The Motion Picture , The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier , and The Undiscovered Country ) and four TNG-era movies ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection , and Nemesis ) all moved  to the Max streaming service and the HBO premium cable channel. That licensing deal wraps up at the end of June and Paramount+ has confirmed that all 10 of those movies will return to “the Home of Star Trek” on Monday, July 1. The returning movies includes the 4K Directors Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture . With the addition of the current Paramount+ library that includes the three J.J. Abrams-produced Kelvin Universe movies, Paramount+ will again feature the full Star Trek movie library, at least for the short term.

The Star Trek movies on Max (but not for long)

The future is licensing

We have seen some or all of the Star Trek movies leave and return to Paramount+ (and previously CBS All Access) over recent years, so it’s quite possible another licensing deal could see the movies exit again. In fact, Paramount Global has been talking more about licensing content as the company struggles to pay off the heavy debt load it has incurred over recent years building up its (still not profitable) streaming service. It would not be surprising to also see the five “legacy” Star Trek TV series again licensed out to other streamers, although those would likely not be exclusive. Before 2022, in the USA Paramount had licensed the classic TV shows to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video concurrently.

Of course, the future of Paramount+ itself is still up in the air. After talks broke down for the Paramount Global merger with Skydance earlier this month, the company is now focused on ways to streamline and cut costs. This includes looking to to form a joint venture for its streaming service, with potential partnerships suggested with Waner Discovery’s Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Comcast’s Peacock. Presumably, the legacy and Paramount+ original Star Trek shows (and movies, including the upcoming Section 31 streaming movie) would be part of this joint venture. However, recent history shows that nothing can be certain when it comes to Paramount Global and how it is handling its streaming service… Actually, there is one certainty: pricing on Paramount+ is set to go up in August .

Connor Trinneer And Dominic Keating Launch ‘D-Con Chamber’ Podcast; Season 3 Of ‘InvestiGates’ On The Way

Does nobody here not already own all of thee?

Are young people collecting discs like we oldsters do/did? I’m sure that there are many readers here who don’t have all the movies, but maybe the majority of us do…?

I don’t….

The extras on the discs alone are worth it as well as the films themselves.

tbh it doesnt really matter any more… paramount is in freefall… they are prepping to break it up and sell the pieces so the shareholders can make a bit more money vs keeping it all together and saving thousands of jobs. they’re even discussing selling the lot. trek is gonna end up somewhere else. let’s just hope it’s not bought by a private equity firm.

… or Disney.

yeah i’d rather be a big fish in a small pond than the opposite. kind of like when they bought the muppets and did nothing with them for 10 years. it took a lot of work from jason siegel to get them to finally make new things. but the whole trek universe might be cut into pieces. then legal issues could stop it all like what happened to friday the 13th. soon we will just be getting merchandise as the equity firm that buys it rents out trek to anyone with money.

I am really hoping it will be Netflix or Amazon buys it. Amazon might be the best choice for getting multiple series- they have run multiple series with the Boys, and with the end of the Boys coming and now with no more Ms. Maisel, they might really want a signature franchise.

Disney would be a mess. HBO/Warner is barely in less trouble than Paramount.

Apple might be ok, but their release schedule gets iffy- could be years between seasons, and might only see 8 episodes of something every year or two.

hbo/warners is in much much better shape than paramount. but like so many companies that merge and merge they acquire debt. it’s all fake anyway. i just read michael jackson’s estate when he died was in 500 million debt but now after settling everything theyre worth 2 billion. it’s all smoke and mirrors. paramount though is in the hands of sherri redstone and she wanted full control and got it and now she wants to flush it so she and the shareholders can be even richer.

netflix doesn’t care one bit about quality… they are all algorithm and what the computers tell them. if that was always the case then trek wouldnt have been around much. every stumble wouldve ended it.

im hoping after seeing what’s gonna happen to paramount redstone goes back to ellison. he wanted to keep the company intact. but i dont know if it’s possible for everyone from redstone to the shareholders to cash out and still leave a working company behind.

they’re prob gonna sell the library and without that there’s really no paramount anymore.

Disney wouldn’t be permitted to buy it. Also Disney is in serious debt.

Good for them. I own them all, so don’t really care if they are or not.

I might be late to this, but question the wisdom of walling off Star Trek. For one thing, I don’t think there’s any wisdom in the Paramount c suite, and so any decision from there is automatically questionable. And then you think about how popular culture has segmented so much that it’s tough to stand out amongst all the noise; but if you’re a property on a teeny tiny streamer, aren’t you obviously less loud than the rest? Wouldn’t it make more sense for Trek to be on a network (lol) or Netflix? The Star Trek Channel/Paramount+ experiment was never all that wise to begin with, but given what we’re seeing with the whole streaming experiment, seems like it’s time to move on.

P.S. It probably would’ve been cheapest and most profitable to remaster DS9 & VOY and simply continue to license the whole franchise, with maybe 1 or 2 new shows financed.

The problem is that all these network execs don’t know how to compete with large streamers, and think that just doing the same thing Netflix of Hulu does will help. But like you’ve pointed out there’s no sense is having just a single franchise carry your entire network. And as much as I hate to admit, Trek may have a loyal following but it’s not as big as Star Wars. Hell even Disney has SW, Marvel, it’s animated features, etc.

But when the streaming wars began everyone thought “People will pay to watch our stuff on demand” – whether you were P+/CBS All Access, NBC, etc. It’s not working out for most as we have seen, though some shifted to be more ‘clustered’ like Peacock for NBC and Bravo reality, Max/Discovery, Hulu/FX.

Compartmentalization was the way to go for awhile, hoping to build streamer growth around It. That’s effectively dead now. Now, they’re back to licensing It out to other streamers as a cash infusion on the corporation’s bottom line.

“ There are only two ways I know to make money in business: bundling and unbundling ” — Jim Barksdale, ex-CEO of Netscape

Very little, imo. I’m an old fart who spends some time in younger fan spaces, and most of the newer Trek fans I’ve met found their way to the franchise from the Kelvin timeline movies or when all of the series were on Netflix. The easier access, the better.

“the Home of Star Trek”

“…except Prodigy, LD, the movies when the license randomly goes back to HBO for 6 months…”

No LDS will stay on P+ after its last season.

A quick revised ‘Best to Worst’ (IMHO)

II – The best one by far, there’s just no debate on this is there. KHAAAN!! III – a worthy sequel, id hazard a guess this is second best for most OG hard TOS’ers like myself. VI – it doesn’t feel right not putting IV next but VI is just too good not to have 3rd best. IV – the most 80s movie (obviously) like Trek does BTTF meets Beverly Hills Cop (minus Eddie). FC – like II the best TNG just no debate. Made Trek ‘cool’ for a brief time which seemed impossible. GEN – despite the missed opportunity of both casts, its still a very important movie in the canon. TMP – yeh everyone loves it now (esp the TOS hard ballers like RMB) but I can’t give it any higher. V – loved it that summer89 (with Indy,Batman) and still do, but know its bad and can’t put it higher. NEM – its had abit of an reappraisal after ST:P and amazing end battle but g’damn its dull as hell. INS – THE worst Trek film of all (even worse than Beyond! of which it feels/looks quite similar)

(Kelvin films: ST09/ID down to just after GEN/before TMP for me these days. few years ago id have put both above GEN, maybe higher.. Beyond angers me more than ever bc of what happened to Orci’s superior sounding timeline under threat/Shatner swansong ST3 so id put that just above INS but below NEM, as NEM deserves abit more leeway now after ST Picard)

Lol i love when people share their lists! My list is similar (and with the JJ movies):

  • First Contact
  • Generations

I absolutely love First Contact as it is my favorite movies of all time, warts and all. In my list, I have major problems with all the films from rank 8 and below. So, for me, the only good Star Trek movies are my top 7. Yes, I do not like TUC with the exception of the final shot.

TUC has some real problems. I don’t rank it as low as you do, but I’m not a fan of some very key aspects. The racism from our own characters really flies in the face of how they’ve been written over the years, and I hate it. Spocks mind invasion is a problem. Not because he went there, but becuase he goes there, and then says ‘Call excelsior, Sulu will know. Spock would only resort to such an invasion If it were so easily resolved. blasphemy.

The biggest problem with TUC is that it was no “whodunit,” as Walter Koenig crowed when it was released. There was no sense of betrayal when Valeris was revealed to be collaborating with the Klingon hardliners, because she was the New Character. It really needed to be Saavik, as originally intended, to pack a punch.

It also would have been stronger had the “Martia” character been a Klingon dissident who helped Kirk and McCoy escape from Rura Penthe — again, as originally intended. That might really have explained what triggered Kirk’s re-evaluation of his hatred for Klingons. (The ENT prequel “Judgement,” where an honorable Klingon defense attorney gets sent to Rura Penthe alongside Archer and helps Archer escape, does a lot to make up for this flaw, though.)

The anti-Klngon racism? Well, it disturbed me when I first saw the movie, but in fairness, Klingons did kill David Marcus, Kirk’s only son, in cold blood ten years earlier. I can understand why Kirk would harbor some blind spots towards Klingons, after that. He wasn’t the same unscarred commander we saw in “Balance of Terror.” “I need my pain,” and all that.

And Nimoy had a beautifully acted moment when Scotty began lecturing him about how “Klingons don’t value life the way we do” — the eyes of the emotion-less Vulcan really conveyed a sense of profound disappointment and despair that his entire Starfleet career suddenly stood for nothing.

It wasn’t perfect, but I think TUC improved with time, unlike TVH.

You’re not wrong about a lot of things that would have made it better.. but to me, they’re improvements, not outright flaws. I really don’t have a problem with Kirk’s position on Klingons.. his stance on not trusting them isn’t an egregious act of racism as much as it’s rooted in personal pain, and that’s supported by the story. No, it’s not the right response, but you get why he’s in that place. It’s everyone else acting in a racist way that bothers me. I don’t hate the movie, but a lot of its key issues have gotten worse with time for me.

Can’t say the OS crew have been big fans of the Klingons, especially after they murdered their captain’s son.

For me my ratings are:

1. WoK 2. TUC 3. FC 4. TvH 5. TSFS 6. BEY 7. GEN. 8. ST09 9. INS 10. STID 11. TFF. 12. TMP 13. NEM

I’ll do mine as tiers

1- TMP | TWOK 2- TVH | TUC | FC 3- TSFS | ST09 | STB 4- TFF | GEN 5- INS | NEM |STID

Always a fun thread, ranking the movies. My favorites, also by tiers. (Within each tier, my favorite may fluctuate, but I’ve tried to list the best first.)

1. TMP | FIRST CONTACT | WRATH OF KHAN (TWOK wasn’t the movie with the most potential or highest concept, but unlike TUC or TFF, what TWOK sought to accomplish, it executed perfectly).

2. UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY | FINAL FRONTIER (my “spicy” take is that TFF is significantly underrated; see my post last week on the subject!). Also, to the extent we think of PIC season 3 as a final TNG movie, it would probably go here.

3. NEMESIS (another spicy take: NEM wasn’t perfect, but it too was underrated, as was Tom Hardy’s performance. The Picard-Shinzon scene in the ready room was pure Star Trek gold, for instance. It would have done better had it not been preceded by the insipid INS and by a general excess of Star Trek products at the time.)

The middling:

4. BEYOND | VOYAGE HOME | SEARCH FOR SPOCK (TVH is overrated; it gets worse with each viewing, but I do like the 24th century bits.)

5. GENERATIONS | ST09

6. INTO DARKNESS

7. INSURRECTION

OK my turn:

Wrath of Khan First Contact The Undiscovered Country The Voyage Home The Search for Spock Generations Beyond Insurrection Final Frontier STO9 TMP STID Nemesis

(Haonestly, all the others after Beyond doesn’t really matter that much in terms of order, they are all just pretty bad to me)

Why didn’t you just list the Kelvin films with the others?

Bc the news story is about the original 10 films so i added the kelvins at the end as a footnote

Love these too. I could probably have two lists, one for the movies that are my favorites, and which I think are best. This is favorites.

TWOK – This one is favorite on this one. It’s the best propulsion forward for the characters of them all. TMP – It’s grown on me tremendously. Easily the most cinematic, & has the Trek Mantra of storytelling at its very heart. TVH – this the 2nd best of the Trek Mantra of storytelling TUC – It has a lot of flaws in the story, gets some key things wrong, but is very well constructed and told. FC – Best of the TNG era TREK 09 – The fact that it’s in an alternate timeline makes it work for me. The cast is great. But the kicker is that Spock Prime’s arc to embracing his humanity comes full circle. TSFS – the parts are greater than the whole. Not a great script. GENS – I actually like it.. sue me. But yeah, it’s pretty flawed. TFF – Dialogue isn’t great, some really standout character moments amongst some ill conceived plot contrivances. BEYOND – Feels trope laden. Enterprise as an emotional loss was not earned. INS – I barely remember it. Felt like a TV episode in the worst way. (there is a way that can be a positive, but this ain’t it!) NEM – Yeah, it’s just doesn’t work. Trying to replicate Spock’s sacrifice may make sense in the story, but It feels like a lazy way of reaching an end for a character to add weight to the story. Didn’t work. STID – This is where I could really go off. The reason I think it’s the worst as well as my least favorite is it pisses me off, and I think it’s objectively bad in its conception and execution. Even though you can change a character because it’s set in a different timeline, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Shoehorning Khan, and then matching the Spock death scene, and reversing it, was utterly stupid. JJ’s mystery box really hurts what could be an engaging overall story of corruption in Starfleet.

TMP way better in its UE 4k version

Absolutely.

Am still wading through the bonus content on the blu ray

  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture

By this time next year a new company will probably have the rights to Star Trek while Paramount withers and dies.

If you love the films, BUY THE DVDs/BLUE-RAY — physical media is the way to go rather than rely on when/where your show/movie is available. Buy physical media for the things you want to watch again and again.

Yep I have all 13 movies on discs these days.

I’ve got most of them, but if I’m honest with myself, I don’t think I’ll ever want to watch any of the post-TOS flicks again, save First Contact, so I let those three go the last time we moved. (STV would have gone with ’em, but my TOS films are part of a multi-disc set. 🤣 )

The only movies I ever rewatch are WOK, TUC, FC and TVH. The others if I catch them on TV or something or like with Nemesis I watched it again due to Picard airing…and was still awful.

Brilliant extras across all the discs, box sets

On the article picture it’s Paramount minus 😜

Speaking of movies, it looks like Paramount is in zero rush to get the prequel starfleet movie out they announced like 5 months ago…but is anyone surprised? 😂🙄

I don’t think we’re getting another movie for the 60th anniversary kids because if they started production on it today it probably wouldn’t be ready until summer 2026 the earliest. And that would be ten years since the last one lol.

But yeah Paramount has bigger problems on its plate these days like if its even around in the next two years.

In the current chaos that Paramount is in, I wouldn’t expect any Trek movies other than streaming movies maybe for many years, if ever.

I sadly agree. We probably will get a Legacy streaming movie sooner than another theatrical movie in the next five years; especially if they don’t feel motivated enough to make a movie for Star Treks 60th anniversary.

Frankly, I’d rather they just can the movies altogether. The best Star Trek has always been on the small screen.

The TOS movies worked because they came about ten years after the series ended, which wasn’t too long a gap, but was long enough to get a perspective on the series and say something about how the characters had changed. There’s no other series that really fits that criteria — even the TNG movies, except for NEM, came too soon after TNG.

*Maybe* ENT would fit the bill, but it wasn’t popular enough to sustain a movie on the silver screen. I’d very much like to see an ENT mini-series in the vein of PIC season 3, though.

I really don’t care that much about the movies and agree Star Trek belongs on TV first and foremost.

But it would still be nice to see just one more before I die. 😉

I’m for anything Enterprise related. If not a theatrical movie then a mini series or a streaming movie would be great too! 😀

It’s still possible a movie can come out by 2026 but production of some kind needs to at least start by the end of this year and yeah not holding my breath. I stopped holding it 5 years ago.

It’s funny I read just today they are going to start shooting the Fantastic Four movie next month that Matt Shakman left the Kelvin movie for. And in all this time not only did they NOT replace him with another director, that movie basically went DOA (again) for another movie. And that doesn’t feel anymore realistic it’s happening anytime soon either since there has not been a single word about the script, starting date or just casting rumors for a movie that’s supposed to be out in two years time.

It’s beyond comical but frustrating at this point.

But yeah when you are dealing with a studio that is in the dire straits it’s in right now, it’s not going to be a huge priority to get a movie off the ground that probably be lucky to make $400 million and will be seen mostly by 40+ year old fanboys.

That’s utterly hilarious the Fantastic Four movie starts shooting soon while Star Trek remains as dead as ever.

I bet Shakman is super happy he bailed on this dumpster fire lol. It will probably be out too before a Star Trek movie ever goes into production.

But I know I’m being harsh, at least the movie has a director and writer attached…just like the last four did including Shakman. 🤣

If Paramount was anymore incompetent it would be run by Trump.

And $400 million sounds overly ambitious at this point. I’m guessing around $300 million tops. When an Indiana Jones movie makes only $300 million no telling how badly another Trek movie can do.

Let me make clear $400 million is the high mark. 😉

I suspect it will do what Beyond did and just fall somewhere between $3-400 million. I will cut it in half and say around $350 million unless it generates the kind of hype the first two did and those days are probably long gone.

(OK how did I suck myself in discussing these movies again lol.)

Well that will be fine if the next movie is around $100 million which is feasible I guess.

JJ verse is likely all but dead probably because they can’t find a way to make something much much cheaper than before. Again the biggest troll job by a studio ever lol.

I don’t think the first contact prequel movie is happening either but they will probably just let that one just die out and move on yet again if we hear nothing about it the rest of the year.

Remember when we were told this was a ‘new regime’ and that a new movie was going to start filming any month now once they get those schedules lined up? Yeah that aged well…and its literally been ages now. 😂😂😂😂

Gullible fans will believe anything I guess.

I will never understand Paramount’s bizarre direction with this franchise. Why keep announcing things you clearly don’t have the money, motivation or vision to make it happen first? Why not clear all those hurdles first before you announce anything and just disappoint your fanbase over and over again? I can’t blame people for just having faith (of the heart) its really really really happening this time but at some point it’s time to wise up and stop believing the studio that keeps serving you the same BS for over five years now. Not until there is actual movement like actors on a set and speaking lines. Until then it’s just more fluff.

But I think every one is very skeptical these days lol.

And now it just looks desperate because everyone knows Paramount doesn’t have any real money anymore to finance something as shaky as another tent pole Star Trek movie; at least at a bigger budget. That’s the only way I see this post First Contact movie happening, it’s at a Bumblebee budget level and no longer an Age of Extinction level. But it’s probably not happening at all either way if, once again, nothing happens by the end of the year.

As said we’ll probably just get more streaming movies instead if A. Section 31 is a big enough hit and B. Paramount+ still exists a few years from now. A Legacy streaming movie would probably be much more popular and profitable anyway since that’s what most fans clearly wants over another tired prequel no one was asking for and they don’t have to worry about it being shown in China just to earn a profit.

Yeah a Legacy movie, now that will at least get fans excited!! 😃

And it could happen since Kurtzman himself hinted at it.

Most fans don’t seem to care about another prequel and the only people who cares about any movie are people on boards like this. Make a 25th century movie. It doesn’t need to be $200 million and explosions every 20 minutes like JJ verse.

But that would probably happen by 2028 the way things are going at Paramount so jist make it for streaming.

I still don’t care that much about the Adolf Section 31 movie but I do hope it’s successful so hopefully we can get stuff like a Legacy or even Lower Decks streaming movies!

I purchased the Trek films I like on DVD and digitally. Same with some of the television shows. If Star Trek is one of their main brands they need to keep the films on Paramount Plus. It makes sense. I cancelled Paramount Plus until SNW returns in 2025. There isn’t much on there I find interesting.

Watch The 'Captain Sulu' Star Trek Fan Film That Put George Takei In The Big Chair

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Sulu

At the beginning of Nicholas Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," Captain Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) is in command of the USS Excelsior, a prototype spacecraft with a newfangled transwarp drive allowing it to travel faster than any ship yet built. The Excelsior was first glimpsed in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," and Sulu, still serving on board the USS Enterprise at the time, stared at new the ship in utter awe. He couldn't have guessed at that moment that he would one day be its captain.

Sulu's captaincy gave the character a satisfying arc. When audiences first saw him in the original "Star Trek," he was a helmsman bearing the rank of lieutenant. In "Star Trek VI," made 25 years later, he was finally in command. If one accepts expanded universe lore culled from ancillary books and the like, Sulu would eventually become an Admiral and Commander in Chief of the Starfleet Command. Sulu's arc inflamed a Trekkie's imagination, picturing a broad series of adventures for Captain Sulu that we simply never got to see. The closest we ever came was a trio of audio adventures produced in 1994 and 1995, each starring Takei.

After the release of "Star Trek VI" in 1991, Takei announced openly that he'd like to star in a Captain Sulu TV series set on board the USS Excelsior, an understandable desire. Sadly, Paramount didn't have any serious interest in a Sulu series, and nothing was ever put into production.

There was one "sort of" pilot episode for a Sulu series, however, which was released in 2007. The fourth episode of the high-end fan series "Star Trek: New Voyages" not only posited a possible future for Sulu, but secured the participation of George Takei, reprising his role.

Takei played Sulu again in Star Trek: New Voyages

When it comes to fan films, "New Voyages" is perhaps one of the best ever made. The series, created by James Cawley and Jack Marshall is not officially canonical, but it's fun to pretend. The productions were slick, and the budgets higher than most fan films, and "New Voyages" attracted multiple former "Star Trek" actors to appear in their various projects (there have been ten episodes to date). In addition to Takei, "New Voyages" boasted appearances from Walter Koenig, Grace Lee Whitney , and Denise Crosby.

Legally, the fan series was allowed to persist thanks to a special agreement from Paramount, who said that "New Voyages" could use licensed characters and imagery, provided they make no money from the endeavor. It is truly a labor of love.

The fourth episode of "New Voyages," "World Enough and Time," was co-written and directed by Marc Scott Zicree, who recently posted the hour-long adventure on his YouTube channel . In a brief introduction, Zicree said that he always considered "World Enough" to be an unofficial pilot — maybe more of a proof-of-concept — for a potential Captain Sulu TV series. Although it had been 16 years since "Star Trek VI," Takei was still game to play Captain Sulu, and clearly there were enough Trekkies who wanted to see him back in the role.

Whitney also appeared as Janice Rand, and Majel Barrett's voice was used for the Starfleet computers, just like on the original shows. The episode also featured the character of Demora Sulu, Hikaru's daughter, previously played by Jacqueline Kim in 1994's "Star Trek: Generations." In "New Voyages," she was played by Mimi Chong.

Here's what we have instead of a Captain Sulu show

The story of "World Enough and Time" is a time-travel plot that involved two versions of Sulu, and was original conceived by co-writer Michael Reaves as a possible story for the stalled 1970s TV series "Star Trek: Phase II" (which would eventually morph into "Star Trek: The Next Generation" ). "New Voyages," it should be noted, takes place shortly after the events of the original "Star Trek" series, and featured a new cast of actors playing the familiar Enterprise crew. In "World Enough and Time," the young Sulu was played by John Lim.

The plot: The Enterprise encounters a trio of Romulan warships that attack one of its shuttlecraft. When the Enterprise retaliates and destroys the Romulan ships, it accidentally opens up a rift in time, and the young Sulu is sucked through. Scotty (Jeffrey Quinn) is able to beam Sulu back on board in moments, but wasn't fast enough, and Sulu appears back on the ship 30 years older. What was only a few moments for the Enterprise was a partial lifetime for Sulu on a distant planet called Caliban. Indeed, Sulu even has a new daughter, Alana (Christina Moses), whom he fathered on Caliban. She, too, is beamed through the space hole.

The episode ends with Scotty learning how to restore the younger Sulu, but he would need the older Sulu's body to do it. The older Sulu understands what is required, and seemingly sacrifices the last 30 years of his memories in order to be made young again.

It was the sight of Sulu on the bridge of the Excelsior with Rand that Zicree liked, though. It wasn't so much a Sulu pilot as a tantalizing taste of what might have been. A Captain Sulu series? The network wasn't interested, but it would have been great. Unfortunately, "World Enough and Time" will have to do for now.

Before ‘Star Trek,’ Gene Roddenberry Made His Mark on This Classic Western Series

The Big Picture

  • Gene Roddenberry wrote 24 episodes of the Western series Have Gun - Will Travel , showcasing his versatile writing talent.
  • The show was ahead of its time, featuring a unique main character, Paladin, who avoided unnecessary violence and embraced different cultures.
  • Roddenberry's work on Have Gun - Will Travel foreshadowed his creation of Star Trek, as both series aimed to challenge storytelling norms.

Before he created Star Trek , Gene Roddenberry worked as a freelance writer for a plethora of different programs beginning in the mid-1950s. But back then, the American Western was the most popular genre on television, which meant that Roddenberry wrote a few gunslinging tales in his day. Between hour-long and half-hour-long programs, there was almost always a Western on one of the Big Three television networks, and one of the most popular of the age was Have Gun - Will Travel . The six-season television series starred Richard Boone (from The Tall T ) and ran from 1957 until 1963, telling just about every traditional Western tale you could imagine. Roddenberry wrote his fair share of those stories himself, which made their own mark on his more popular science-fiction series.

Have Gun - Will Travel

What is 'have gun - will travel' about.

With a title like Have Gun - Will Travel , one might wonder what this "adult" Western is about. Richard Boone stars here as Paladin, a learned and intelligent gun-for-hire who travels around the country taking odd jobs and solving all sorts of problems . There are few recurring characters beyond Paladin himself, but that's actually to this show's benefit. Paladin was always friendly with others, but he ultimately worked the best on his own. The character's name derives from the legendary Middle Ages knights of the same name, and, indeed, he has a white chess knight embroidered on his holster. More than capable as a soldier on his own, Paladin wanders across the post-Civil War-era United States (he once served in the Union Army) as a "knight without armor," hoping to avoid violence at every turn.

Have Gun - Will Travel deals with everything from Native American conflicts, cattle rustling, bank robbery, interracial marriages, outlaw gangs, and more. If it happened in a Western , it likely happened at some point on Have Gun - Will Travel . According to Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh in The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946–Present , the series was an instant hit. It ranked as one of television's Top 5 programs in the ratings as early as its first season and was the third most popular Western of its time , just behind Gunsmoke and Wagon Train . It's also worth noting that the show's portrayal of its leading gunslinger was likely part of the reason it was so popular. Unlike other Western TV protagonists, Paladin was college-educated, well-read, and did everything he could to avoid unnecessary violence after his time in the Civil War. He was also willing to engage with different cultures and had an expensive palate that cost a considerable amount to maintain. No wonder his rates were so high.

Additionally, Paladin was one of the fastest guns in the Old West. Though he never hoped to fire his sidearm in battle, he often found himself in situations where violence was necessary. While many other Western heroes wore lighter colors to signify their stance in the fight between good and evil, Paladin wore all black and prided himself on his ethics despite his almost villainous appearance. Have Gun - Will Travel ran for 225 episodes, each chronicling a new half-hour adventure that would see our hero put to the test again . Simultaneously, a Have Gun - Will Travel radio show was also produced, with John Dehner of Gunsmoke fame voicing Paladin instead.

Gene Roddenberry Wrote 24 Episodes of 'Have Gun - Will Travel'

From the very beginning, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was involved in Have Gun - Will Travel . The third episode of the series, "The Great Mojave Chase," was the first episode penned by the future science-fiction author, and it immediately helped set the tone of the series. He would write several episodes throughout the first season, including "The Yuma Treasure" and the excellent Christmas tale "The Hanging Cross," which begins with Paladin removing his gun in the infamous intro sequence. However, Roddenberry wouldn't be acknowledged for his contributions to the series until the sixteenth episode, "Helen of Abajinian," aired in late 1957. The following year, the Writer's Guild of America granted him a "Best Original Script" award for the episode. And it's no wonder, as "Helen of Abajinian" is loads of wedding-themed fun .

In total, Roddenberry penned 24 episodes of Have Gun - Will Travel across all six seasons of the series . Though he only wrote a single episode in the show's fourth and fifth seasons, he wrote between five and six episodes per season for the rest of the series. Roddenberry writes Paladin as cool and collected, emphasizing his peculiar brand of morality. He has an air about him that makes him feel like something of a man outside of time, and while that's Paladin's aesthetic throughout the series, Roddenberry's episodes capture it best . "The Hanging Cross" is a particularly compelling episode where Paladin plays mediator between a grief-stricken rancher, Nathaniel Beecher ( Edward Binns ), and the local Pawnee chief Cah-la-te ( Abraham Sofaer ) at Christmastime. As Paladin seeks to discover the truth behind Beecher's missing son, he preaches a message of peace and hangs up his gun so that he can stop Beecher from killing the Pawnee without any bloodshed. It's a powerful moment when Paladin is challenged on his belief, and Roddenberry nails it in the climax.

In Have Gun - Will Travel , Roddenberry's distinct voice is seen throughout his episodes. Though the show would also help launch the careers of others—including Superman director Richard Donner , Mission: Impossible creator Bruce Geller , The Wild Bunch director Sam Peckinpah , and Dirty Harry co-writer Harry Julian Fink — Roddenberry was the show's most prolific writer besides the series creators, Herb Meadow and Sam Rolfe . It's no wonder then that he would go on to create his own series for CBS three years after Paladin's final adventure.

Roddenberry's Blueprints for 'Star Trek' Can Be Seen in This Western

It's long been said that when Gene Roddenberry first pitched Star Trek to CBS, he did so by calling it " Wagon Train to the Stars ." The Star Trek creator hoped to adapt the traditional Western theme of "Manifest Destiny" into outer space with the concept of the U.S.S. Enterprise exploring the greater reaches of the universe, the "final frontier." Though the original Star Trek series only lasted three seasons, it became a cult classic that spawned a massive franchise that is as strong as ever today. But while Star Trek might seem like the exact opposite of a series like Have Gun - Will Travel (set in the future rather than the past, an ensemble cast instead of a single hero, alien species instead of mythical Native Americans, etc.), there were a few more common threads than you might initially think. According to Edward Gross ' The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years , Roddenberry wanted to break free of the formula Westerns he'd been forced to write before.

But that's not all. Roddenberry felt limited by what issues he could and couldn't talk about on network television, so Star Trek 's futuristic setting was crafted to shift the entire conversation. Of course, we can see Roddenberry's yearnings for more in his Have Gun - Will Travel episodes, too . The acclaimed "Helen of Abajinian" doesn't feature a shootout at all and instead ends with a wedding that blends two cultures ( Star Trek would later feature one of the first interracial kisses on television ). "The Hanging Cross" doesn't conclude with a gunfight either, although it almost escalates there. Instead, a Christmas miracle (and Paladin's willingness to set down his gun) changes the entire outcome. And let's not forget about how, in most of Roddenberry's episodes, Native Americans have more depth and complexity, rarely (if ever) portrayed in a negative light.

It's easy to see how a character like Paladin, who seemed relatively progressive in his day and age, would appeal to Gene Roddenberry , whose political and cultural leanings would serve as the foundation for the Star Trek franchise. Have Gun - Will Travel was what someone like Rod Serling ( who once tried his own hand at the Western ) might call "a thinking man's Western." It made audiences pause and consider the implications of each and every conflict and, like Paladin himself, seek another, more peaceful solution. In the wake of the Vietnam War, this would've been a Western that most audiences could get behind. It was conservative enough in its material but progressive in its solutions. No doubt Gene Roddenberry contributed to the impressive legacy of Have Gun - Will Travel , which in turn contributed to the creation of Star Trek itself.

Have Gun - Will Travel is available to stream on Pluto TV in the U.S.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Tower of God season 2, and more new TV this week

A character from Star Trek: Prodigy looking up at the sky and going “ooh”

If you’re in the States, then this week is July Fourth. If you’re not in the States, then this week is just July 4 — congrats to all who get to mark the day however they are, wherever they are! No surprise, but: I think we should all celebrate by watching TV. Particularly if you’re in for anime, there’s a lot of premieres this week on Crunchyroll, meaning you can roll right through the long (or regular!) weekend with a blitz of new programs.

Here’s the best new TV premieres (and just a few of the anime previews) this week.

New shows on Netflix

Star trek: prodigy.

Genre: Star Trek (animated YA adventures edition) Release date: July 1, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Kevin and Dan Hageman Cast: Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, and more

Prodigy has survived cancellation (read: was in production for season 2 when it got axed by Paramount) and has jumped over to a new network (read: was subsequently picked up by Netflix). That means that if you liked what Prodigy was putting down in season 1, you will probably like it when it makes its way to Netflix.

New shows on Max

Hard knocks: offseason with the new york giants.

Genre: Docuseries, sports drama Release date: July 2 Cast: The players and staff of the New York Giants

The New York Giants are entering their 100th season. It’s quite an accomplishment, but they (like all NFL teams) won’t settle for anything less than a Super Bowl slot. Will they get it? Who’s to say — but now we can at least watch what they’re saying during the offseason.

New shows on Crunchyroll

Nier: automata ver1.1a season 2.

Genre: Sci-fi action Release date: July 5, with one episode Studio: A-1 Pictures

Fans of the Nier: Automata , rejoice: The gorgeous anime adaptation of the hit game is finally making its return this summer with a second season following the first’s protracted and troubled development. Hopefully A-1 Pictures has ironed out all the details for this new season so we won’t be waiting weeks or even months between episodes.

The second “cour” (the term for a production block of anime averaging between 10 and 14 episodes) will pick up immediately after the first, with 9S having learned the shocking truth behind Project YoRHa after defeating the alien robots Adam and Eve alongside 2B. We’ll have to wait until July 5 to see just how much Nier: Automata Ver1.1a will diverge from the story of the original game. —Toussaint Egan

Tower of God season 2

Genre: Fantasy action Release date: July 7, with one episode Studio: The Answer Studio

There’s a (in-universe) six-year gap between seasons here, and while we’ll be following up with Bam, Rachel, and the rest of the season 1 crew — along with their rankings! — season 2 is also bringing in some new protagonists. Meet Wangnan and Jyu, who are a little more advanced in the tower’s levels than we’ve seen so far. Time to find out what new challenges this mysterious tower can bring!

My Deer Friend Nokotan

Genre: Slice-of-life comedy Release date: July 7, with one episode Studio: Wit Studio

Based on the 2019 manga by Oshioshio, My Deer Friend Nokotan is a comedy that centers on the misadventures of Torako Koshi, a former “yankee” (see: delinquent) girl trying to keep up her appearance as a ideal student at her new high school. That becomes significantly more difficult after she saves Noko Shikanoko, a self-described “deer-girl hybrid” who begins to follow Torako around and get up to all sorts of shenanigans.

The trailer looks ridiculous, with realistic CG depictions of deer juxtaposed with Noko’s chibi-like appearance. There’s even a cute callback to the ending of 1984’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind , with Noko being lifted above a marching herd of deer while surrounded by an aura of light. We’ll see how the actual series holds up when it premieres this weekend. —TE

Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Genre: Fantasy action Release date: July 7, with one episode Studio: Actas, Bandai Namco Pictures

Based on the fantasy adventure manga by author Fujino Ōmori and illustrator Toshi Aoi, Wistoria: Wand and Sword centers on Will Serfort, a young student who enrolls at a prestigious magic academy with hopes of achieving his dream of becoming one of the most powerful magic users in the world. However, much like My Hero Academia ’s Izuku Midoriya or Solo Leveling ’s Sung Jin-woo, Will has a critical roadblock: He can’t cast even the simplest of spells to save his own life!

That’s not gonna stop him, though, as he descends into the dungeons beneath the school to slay vicious monsters as an alternate way to earn academic credits. He’s like Naruto ’s Rock Lee, only instead of being terrifyingly proficient in taijutsu, he’s an absolute beast when it comes to sword fighting.

I’m not familiar with the source material myself, but I am intrigued by the fact that Tatsuya Yoshihara, who previously worked as the action director on 2022’s Chainsaw Man and the chief director on the final season of Black Clover , is the director on Wistoria: Wand and Sword . Which means, at the very least, audiences can expect some exquisite action sequences. —TE
