Matheran in Maharashtra: Essential Travel Guide

The Closest Hill Station to Mumbai

matheran trip plan for family

The closest hill station to Mumbai, Matheran was discovered in 1850 by the British during their occupation of India and subsequently developed into a popular summer retreat. At a height of 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level, this serene place provides a cooling escape from searing temperatures. However, the most unique thing about it and what makes it so special is that all vehicles are banned there— even bicycles. It's a soothing place to relax away from any noise and pollution.

Matheran is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Mumbai , in the state of Maharashtra.

How to Get There

Getting to Matheran is one of the highlights. A popular option is the leisurely two-hour journey on the historic toy train mountain railway  from Neral. However, services are currently suspended because part of the track was washed away during the 2019 monsoon.

If you don't take the toy train up to Matheran, there are a couple of other ways of getting there: either take a train from Mumbai (or Pune) to Neral railway station and then shared jeep to Dasturi car park, or drive all the way to Dasturi car park if you have your own vehicle. If frequency of trains to Neral is an issue, you'll find more trains running from Karjat. Travel time by shared jeep from Neral to Dasturi is about 25 minutes. The cost is 80 rupees per person.

Dasturi car park is about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from Matheran. From there, you can ride to Matheran on horseback, or walk a few minutes to Aman Lodge railway station and take the regular shuttle train service (which operates during the monsoon as well) for 45 rupees per person. Hand pulled rickshaws and porters are also available.

To get to Neral from Mumbai by train, take one of the frequent local trains that terminate at Karjat or Khopoli on the Central Line. There are also two morning Indian Railways trains that stop at Neral—the 11007 Deccan Express (departs CST at 7.00 a.m. and arrives at 8.25 a.m) and the 11029 Koyna Express (departs CST at 8.40 a.m and arrives at 10.03 a.m).

Visitors are charged a "Capitation Tax" to enter Matheran, to be paid on arrival at the train station or car park. The cost is 50 rupees for adults and 25 rupees for children.

Due to its height, Matheran has a cooler and less humid climate than lower surrounding areas such as Mumbai and Pune. In summer, the temperature reaches a top of 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) while in winter it drops to 15 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit).

Heavy monsoon downpours are experienced from June to September. The roads can get very muddy as they're not sealed. As a result, many places close for the monsoon season and the toy train service is suspended. The best time to visit is just after the monsoon, from mid September to mid October, when nature is still lush and green from the rain.

Very attractive hotel discounts of 50% are possible during the low season, from mid June to mid October. For the best savings, instead of booking ahead, negotiate directly with hotel owners when you arrive. This enables you to check out the hotel environment and facilities as well. Some hotels that offer good discounts, such as the Horseland Hotel and Mountain Spa , also offer karaoke, children's activities and other entertainment programs. Great for families but not people in search of solitude!

If you want a relaxing experience, avoid visiting Matheran during the Diwali festival in October or November, Christmas, and the Indian school holiday period from April to June. Prices skyrocket as hordes of tourists flock there. Weekends can also get hectic. Meals are usually included in hotel rates so do check what's being served—some places only cater for vegetarians.

What to See and Do There

Visitors are drawn to Matheran for its tranquility, fresh air, and old-world charm. In this place without vehicles, horses and hand pulled carts are the main forms of transport.

Matheran is blessed with dense forest, long nature trails, and panoramic views. There are more than 35 large and small viewpoints dotted around the hilltop. Early risers should head to Panorama Point to take in a spectacular sunrise, while fiery sunsets are best seen from Porcupine Point/Sunset Point and Louise Point. Exploring all the points on horseback is a fun adventure. A trek to One Tree Hill is memorable too, for those who are feeling energetic.

One thing to keep in mind when visiting Matheran is that the area subject to frequent power outages. Many places don't have a generator to supply backup power, therefore it's a good idea to carry flashlight.

In addition, do note that there are plenty of monkeys and, unfortunately, they can be a menace -- especially if you have food and they are hungry.

Where to Stay

Matheran's isolated location makes it relatively expensive to stay there. Cheaper rooms can be found in the main market area near the toy train station, while secluded resorts are set back from the road amid the forest. Be aware that many hotels don't provide rooms to single men.

Some of the grand mansions of the British, Parsis and Bohras have been converted to hotels, which are a highlight. Character-filled Lord's Central is one such place. Rates start from 3,600 rupees per night, with tax included. It's centrally located, and has a stunning mountain and valley views. The 100-year old Parsi Manor is a magnificent heritage property with four bedrooms, perfect for groups. Expect to pay around 6,500 rupees per night for two people, including tax.

19th century Verandah in the Forest (now called Dune Barr House) is perhaps the most popular heritage hotel in Matheran. Rates start from about 6,300 rupees per night, including tax and breakfast. Westend Hotel has a peaceful location away from the main market area, with rates from 2,250 rupees per night, plus tax. Woodlands Hotel is also a good choice, but can get busy with families staying there.

The mighty Western Ghats or Sahyadri mountain ranges are what make Matheran, the smallest yet one of the most appealing of the hill stations of India . Matheran’s Toy Train is one among the historic Mountain Railways of the country and travelling on the toy train that was founded in 1907 by Abdul Hussein Peerboy, a Mumbai based entrepreneur, is one of the hill town’s sought after things to do. Matheran is a peaceful, quiet hill town where not even the tinkle of a bicycle bell would break your reverie, for the township debars motor vehicles of any sort from running round the roads.

Matheran's tourism is renowned for its salubrious climate, its view points and trekking trails. If you would love to spend your holidays in Matheran, our travel guide should help you plan a great trip.

The nearest airport is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai that caters to domestic flights from most cities across the country and international flights from Singapore , Hong Kong , Dubai and Kuala Lampur etc. From the airport you might hire a cab to Matheran.

The nearest major rail head is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. Get to Mumbai by train and hire a cab to Matheran. The closest rail station is Neral and you could also arrive at Neral by train and get a cab to Matheran. Or ride the toy train!

You can drive to Matheran from nearest cities like Mumbai or Pune . Or hop onto a private or state run bus from Panvel or Pune.

Getting Around:

Matheran Toy Train chugs off from Neral and winds up the hill for about 20 km to reach Matheran. The slow train halts at Jummapatti, Waterpipe and Aman Lodge before it reaches Matheran. If you want to skip the train you could also check for the shared jeep that might run from Neral to Dasturi Point. Within Matheran it’s either a hike by foot wherever you go or get a pony or rickshaw to ride on.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Weather and Best Time to Visit: Matheran Tourism And Travel Guide

Matheran’s seasons are usually ideal throughout the year, but the best time for sightseeing and trekking would be from October to May.

Summer (March – June):

Summers are warm and summery and not as hot as they are in the plains. It is a good time for trekking and visiting the view points. Summer is the second best tourist time in Matheran.

Monsoon (July – September):

Monsoon is a beautiful season in Matheran, with the waterfalls and Charlotte Lake turning spectacular, but trekking becomes a bother due to slippery rocks and muddy footpaths. You can visit Matheran if you love the rains.

Winter (October – February):

The season turns the mountain peaks misty and picturesque. The days are cool and breezy and it’s a lovely feel to stroll up the peaks to watch the sights or go exploring into the ruins of ancient hill top fortresses. The landscape turns green, sprayed with a multitude of wildflowers. Winter’s the best time to be in Matheran.

Things to Do: Matheran Tourism And Travel Guide

Memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji:

If you trek up Echo Point, do visit the Memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Memorial pays tribute to the Maratha warrior king with murals, models of arms and weapons used during the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji as well as a historical timeline of his life.

Panther Caves:

There are small uninhabited caves in the hillsides that are what is believed to have been the home of tigers and panthers long ago, when Matheran was a desolate wild mountainside. Take a break to explore the caves, one of which has a small shrine.

At the Lakeside:

Pack a picnic hamper and get off on a picnic trip to Charlotte Lake side. Visit Pisarnath Shiva temple and Holy Cross Church located near the lake. Keep your camera handy, for Charlotte Lake is one of the best birding sites of Matheran.

Some time for the Birds:

You don’t have to wait for winter to watch Matheran’s birds. Take a walk to Louisa Point or Porcupine point to listen to the cuckoo, larks and bulbul. One of the best things you can do in Matheran is sit on the dewy grass on the points (well away from the sheer drop, of course) and listen to the birds sing.

Karnala Fort and Sanctuary:

The 12th century Fort of Karnala, occupied by the Portuguese, Marathas, Mughal dynasty and the British is an interesting place of travel for history buffs and people in search of adventure and nature. Visit the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and trek to the Karnala Fort.

Adventure Sports:

A peaceful walk along the unhewn paths of the mountain slopes fringed by bushes of wild flowers is bound to keep you peacefully happy. If not, then charge forward and get into the spirit of zapping across the waters or clambering up the cliffs. The gigantic gentle slopes of Matheran make for great adventure tourism.

Points with a View:

Matheran has umpteen number of view points that give a spectacular sight of the marvellous nature that abounds in the region. Check out the Panorama Point for its sunrise, Porcupine Point for its sunset, Louisa Point for its view of the forts and last but not the least Mt. Barry the highest of them all for a magnificent bird’s eye view of Matheran.

Shivaji’s Ladder:

Check out Shivaji’s Ladder, a path up the hill towards One Tree Hill that has the semblance of a ladder. Legends say that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to climb up the ladder when he went hunting. The pathway lies on a trekking trail and though lying on a difficult terrain, Shivaji’s Ladder is popular as tourists and trekkers love to hike up the hill just to see the legendary ladder.

Weekend Getaway:

Plan a cool getaway to the touristy towns and hill stations near Matheran. Dressed with all fineries of luxuriant nature, hill stations like Lonavala, Khandala and towns like Karjat that lie close by are much sought after tourist destinations.

Matheran’s cuisine is an exotic blend of customary Maharashtrian food, with delicious combinations of the Mughlai, Konkani and Gujarathi thalis as well as Chinese fare. Matheran – All You Need To Know Before Your Visit

matheran

Matheran is a quaint hill station tucked between the  Sahyadri ranges of Western Ghats. Towering at a height of 2600 meters above sea level, Matheran is a much-needed solace from the cacophony of Mumbai. Marred by the blues of the “city that never sleeps”? Need a quick getaway for a day or two? Matheran is the answer to your wishes. Located at a mere 100 kilometers from the commercial hub of the country, Matheran is the picture-perfect weekend getaway. Matheran- literally meaning “overhead forests” is the smallest hill station in the country. However, the scenic splendor of Matheran is one of a kind, and the number of people visiting is a testament to that fact.

Matheran has a time-traveling charm to it in the weirdest sense. Step into the red soils, and you are instantly transported back to a time forgotten. Matheran is one of the very few places in the country that does not allow vehicles. As you tread along this rustic beauty of a town, with the lush greens around, you feel the salubrious effect it has on you. And why wouldn’t you? The symphonic chirpings of pigeons and the harmonious rustling of leaves are nature’s beautiful concert. Here is Matheran’s finest that you need to know before you visit this iconic location.

How to reach Matheran:

Reach Neral by Mumbai Local train or Express train.

From Neral you can get a taxi or van from there it’s 30mins by road.

There is a lovely option for a toy train. Though it’s a little slow it gives you a beautiful view throughout the journey. During monsoon, toy trains may not work, plan accordingly. You can also start your journey from Mumbai directly to Matheran. It has properly developed roads.

There are 38 points to visit in Matheran but it’s not possible to visit all of them in a day. So it’s is suggested that you stay overnight to cover more.  There are many places available to stay in Matheran, luxurious to low cost. You can do online booking a day before or just walking and check availability here. Matheran never disappoints you, you’ll get place always.

You don’t have to worry when you walk towards these points, directions on every walkable road have carefully planted. It can be exhausting after you visit 2-3 points, you can always ride on horse for an hour or two.

Here’s the list of few popular points you must visit during your Matheran trip:

1. Monkey Point

If there is something in abundance that this stunning hill station possesses, it is the enchanting views and amazing locations to view them. The Monkey Point is one such popular viewpoint. Stand at the monkey point and stare at the horizon and beyond. The palatial mountains and deep gorges will leave you spellbound. Wondering how the spot got its name? Well, you might have probably guessed it by now. A monkey point is a place where you can spot gangs of monkeys and boys they are a great company. You would hold your breath as the monkey play close to the edges of the terrain. They easily climb to the underside of rocks, least bothered about the towering fall that could kill them. It is a view that is uniquely exhilarating.

There are attractive views that your gaze can take you at this stunning spot. The mesmerizing sunsets with complete orange vibrance and plunging falls are all part of the captivating experience.  Stand at the monkey point and shout out to the skies, the echoes will give chills down your spine. Hide your food and hold on to your things a little tight, monkeys like to snatch things. Sometimes, they might mimic you, the rare experience you can hold on to.

2. Echo Point

Another popular viewpoint in the area is the echo point. Well as the name suggests, the place is famous for its hair raising echoes and reverberations that it generates. The fluffy white blanket above and nature’s lush green carpet below, echo point is the place to absorb the true virgin beauty of nature. Serenity engulfs you from all sides and the utmost calmness that you feel is something any Mumbaikar would crave for. Echo point is also a foodie’s delight with several stalls serving Maharashtra’s best. A morning or evening visit is ideal, but the visit during rains is pure magnificence. Well, the roads are slippery, just be careful.

Echo point is a photographer’s paradise without a doubt. The Sahyadri ranges with its complete glory are visible from the echo point. The view is one that should be etched in memory and frames. Apart from echo point, Louisa’s point and porcupine point are places that offer bird’s eye view to this mesmerizing hill station.

3. Panorama Point

Panorama’s point is a photographer’s paradise. what’s more? The crowds are very less and you get that quality time that you can retreat to yourself with a spellbinding view in the background. Reaching panorama point is however a mission. But then again the best things in never come easy do they. One can even have a horse ride to reach the point. However, the last 2 kilometers does require trekking due to the steep trails. One can also use a toy train to reach a panorama point. The beautiful treks, the photography feast, and a chance to just stop and breathe for a moment…Panorama point’s charms are just about endless. Oh, Panorama point in the monsoons with its verdant greenery is just beyond words.

4. Honeymoon Point

Honeymoon Point is very tranquil and offers a captivating view of Matheran’s palatial mountains. From here, one can see Prabal Fort, various valleys accommodating civilizations and the vast beautiful sky that changes colors at dusk. The view of mountains from Honeymoon Point is such that you would call them ‘Indian Grand Canyon’. Wondering why it’s called honeymoon point?

Well, for one, visit honeymoon point and you feel the love in the air. You feel like there’s no place as romantic as honeymoon point in the world. A quiet moment with your love right here with no one to interrupt may just be the best moments you might have on a Matheran trip. Also, the beautiful sunsets in the background and your lover by your side is not something easy to pass upon. But most of all, that alluring and soothing silence that you just crave, especially if you are a Mumbaikar  just draws people to this amazing spot.

5. Charlotte Lake

Matheran boasts of a fine number of vantage points to truly absorb its beauty. That being said, the quintessential aspect of Matheran is the Charlotte lake. Just a walking distance away from the main market area, this lake is the main source of drinking water Matheran. The origin of the lake is a dam, which overflows when it rains and forms a pristine little waterfall to form the shimmering lake in monsoon. A visit to Matheran without a visit to this tranquil beauty is just incomplete. The crystal clear blue waters that set a soothing ambiance is something beyond words. It doesn’t end there. Charlotte lake holds a certain sanctitude..almost a place of reverence for the locals here.

The lake has an archaic temple of Lord Shive – Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir and for the explorers and nature lovers at heart, all Charlotte has to offer is the charming ambiance of the tarn itself and the bountiful emerald green all around. And birdwatchers, brace yourself, Charlotte lake will not disappoint you. Also, charlotte place is an ideal place for camping, picnicking and most of all simply lazing down and watching the sunset. While the lake looks it full guts and glory at the monsoons, the rains make it impossible for camping and bird watching. So, the ideal time to visit is just immediately after the monsoon, during October-November.

6. The Other Side of Matheran

Despite being a tiny, laid-back hill station, Matheran offers some of the most adrenaline-pumping activities for those who are up for it. The zipline valley crossing between Louisa Point and Honeymoon Point is a very famous attraction for adventure enthusiasts, and you should try it once if you have the heart for it, because it is an extremely thrilling once-in-a-lifetime experience. The valley crossing at 2000 ft will put your heart at your mouth. Trust me, you’ll scream at the top of your lungs as you reach the middle. It is an experience worth having if you ever make it to a beautiful spot. Apart from this, Matheran’s shopping center provides a taste of the true essence of the area.

The small boutiques and local shops, where you can buy locally produced goods such as leather items, footwear, and other simple handicraft items is a paradise for collectors. and for buying souvenirs. A very sought after locally produced Matheran item is Chikki, which is a confection comprising jaggery and cashew nut. Chikki sellers also sell, fudge. Chocolate fudge is my personal favorite. The local cuisine of Matheran includes traditional Maharashtrian fare like vada pav and pav bhaji, Konkani misal pav, and of course, the very popular chikki. It would be almost a crime not to taste it after making the trip. There are plenty of shops selling the various variants of this cuisine and I suggest you embrace the soul of the place and give everything a try.

7. Trekking at Matheran

Matheran also provides a great trekking experience. The trek starts from Bhivpuri station and ends at Garnett Plateau or Garbett point . It’s a very easy one day trek. Sure, the blazing sun and the long route may pose some obstacles, however, apart from this, it’s a very easy trek. Trekking during the monsoons, however, is a heavenly experience. The drizzles trickling down your face and the cool gentle breeze brushing your hair is just an enthralling feeling. There’s also trek to One Tree Hill Point which is a moderate level one day trek. It starts from Dasturi Naka following the trail from Ambewadi to One tree hill point. This route is known as the Shivaji Ladder route. This trek is rare.

Matheran takes about only a couple of days to explore completely and at visit during monsoons will give you the best experience. What are you waiting for? Matheran is calling.

You can also explore Lonavala if the monsoon is on their way and hill station is your calling

Working Parents, Plan for the Week with This Simple Exercise

  • Avni Patel Thompson

matheran trip plan for family

To avoid surprises and decision fatigue, take 20 minutes to preview your family’s commitments.

As work travel and hours in the office mount, work parents are feeling the logistical challenges of making every week happen — from kid pickup and dropoff and sports practice to meal planning and doctor’s appointments. The main difficulties lie in managing the firehose of information, coping with decision fatigue, and dealing with surprises like an illness or a forgotten event. The best approach for avoiding — or mitigating — these obstacles is the weekly preview: A planning session between the core adults in the family each week to go over what’s coming. The week’s plan is documented and discussed, highlighting variances from typical weeks and indicating back-up plans for particularly tricky spots.

It’s been nearly four years since we first met Amir and Ria as they were navigating the early months of Covid with two jobs and two young children at home.

  • AT Avni Patel Thompson  is the founder and CEO of  Milo, the world’s first app to tackle the invisible load of running and raising a family. She is a third-time founder building technology solutions that make everyday parenting lighter and more connected. Previously she was the founder of YC-backed Poppy. Prior to taking the entrepreneurial plunge, she spent over a decade building consumer businesses at P&G, adidas, and Starbucks. She has an MBA (HBS ’08) and a BSc Chemistry from the University of British Columbia. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and two daughters.

Matheran Sightseeing Packages

Trip Location: Matheran Destinations Covered: 2N Mahabaleshwar, 2N Lonavala Start Point: Mumbai airport/railway station End Point: Mumbai airport/railway station Accommodation: Cottage and resort Things to do: Sightseeing, scenic road trip

About the Package

Nestled within the emerald green mountains of the Western Ghats, Matheran is a hill station as pretty as a picture postcard, known for its magical misty weather, mesmerizing panoramas and well-preserved colonial architecture here and there. TravelTriangle’s Matheran sightseeing tour package will take you on a journey to explore one of the most captivating hill stations of Maharashtra. The reason Matheran has been able to retain its pristine beauty is owed much to the fact that private vehicles are banned in the area. The most you can travel up by car and park it is Dasturi Car Point near Neral. From Neral Railway Station leaves the famous toy train that has been restarted on its 21km journey to Matheran once again. The 3.5 hours journey takes the passengers through breathtakingly beautiful hilly sceneries right up to the front door of your destination.

However, Matheran is not the only destination in your Matheran sightseeing package . The first stop on the itinerary is Mahabaleshwar, yet another beautiful hill stations on the Sahyadri. The town is known for its temples, lovely waterfalls set against charming landscapes and medieval fortresses. After two nights stay in Mahabaleshwar, you will be driving towards Lonavala via Panchgani. You can take a look around Panchgani on the route, enjoy a couple of sumptuous meals and reach Lonavala for an overnight stay with our Matheran local sightseeing tour package .

On the second day of your Matheran trip plan , visit the second highest peak of Mahabaleshwar - Connaught Peak, which was earlier known as Mount Olympia. This peak was renamed after the visit of the Duke of Connaught who was captivated by the spectacular scenic beauty of this place. Located at a height of 1400 m above sea level, Connaught Peak provides a breathtaking glimpse of Venna Lake, Pratapgarh Fort, and Krishna Valley. You can also visit the famous Parsi point which is located 2 km away from Panchgani. This point offers some of the most picturesque views of the mountains and valleys close to Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani.

You can spend the next day looking around Lonavala and do local sightseeing through our Matheran trip plan . Once again there are magnificent lakes and waterfalls, caves and caverns in the lap of the hills and excellent views from vantage points. On the fourth day of your Matheran sightseeing, you will finally reach Matheran. Since private vehicles are not allowed up to Matheran, you can either trek the distance from Neral or take the toy train. Either way, you get to enjoy the serene beauty of the hills on your way up. After an evening’s sightseeing and shopping, you will have to get ready to drive your way back to Mumbai.

  • Visit Connaught Peak, Panch Ganga Shiv Temple
  • Enjoy boating at the pristine Venna Lake
  • Visit the famous Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves
  • Enjoy the view from Sydney Point, Parsi Point, and Kamalgad Fort

Mahabaleshwar: Arrival and overnight stay

  • Day at leisure

Other Benefits (On Arrival)

Drive up to Mahabaleshwar from your hometown and enjoy an evening of leisure Start your journey to Mahabaleshwar from Mumbai or Pune in the afternoon. The journey to this quaint hill station is picturesque and full of amazing beautiful vistas. Upon your arrival at the hotel, check-in and retire to your room to unwind after the day’s journey. You could relax for a bit and then plan for the day ahead. Since the evening is at leisure, you could do whatever your heart pleases. Stay back at the hotel to check and experience what the property has to offer or head out to explore the town on your own. Once you are done, return to the hotel for overnight stay.

Mahabaleshwar: Local sightseeing

Set out to explore the hill station of Mahabaleshwar The 2nd day will be all about seeing what Mahabaleshwar has to offer. After having breakfast, drive through the morning mist to the temples, lakes and enthralling viewpoints that the town is so famous for. As the sun starts to peek through the fog, you will visit the confluence of the five holy rivers – Krishna, Venna, Savitri, Koyna and Gayatri and the Panch Ganga Shiva Temple located here. You can offer puja here if you want. Next stop will be the pristine Venna Lake, which welcomes you with its beauty and boating activities to enjoy. A major inclusion of the day’s trip is Connaught Peak, which is the second-highest peak of Mahabaleshwar and offers a spectacular view of the entire town. Return to the hotel after this and enjoy overnight stay.

Lonavala: Sightseeing at Panchgani Enroute

  • Sightseeing

Enjoy driving through Panchgani and taking in the most of the historic hill station You will not be staying in Panchgani, but it is too awesome a town to give it a complete miss. You will drive through Panchgani on your way to Lonavala on the 3rd day of Matheran sightseeing package. If you think you have time, you can see the major attractions of the town like the volcanic plateau Table Land, lookouts like Sydney Point and Parsi Point and the historic Kamalgad Fort. Do not miss to taste ice creams, shakes, and strawberries in one of the many joints you will come across on the way. Arrive at Lonavala and you will get the evening to yourself to take rest and recharge yourself for the next day.

Lonavala: Local sightseeing

Visit the local attractions of Lonavala before heading towards Matheran Day 4 is divided into two parts. The first part involves visiting the Karla-Bhaja Caves in Lonavala. They are not as famous as some other similar Buddhist cave-works in Maharashtra and not even half as commercialized, which makes them perfect serene destinations. Dating back to 2nd century BC, Karla is an impressive single cave, while Bhaja has multiple. You will see the Lonavala Lake and some other points too before having lunch, grabbing your luggage and making your way to Matheran.

Matheran: Local sightseeing and Departure

Explore the beauty of Matheran before leaving for home with memories The main attractions of Matheran are mostly view points. Lousia Point, Alexander Point and sunset from Porcupine Point are most attractive, and so is the crystal blue Charlotte Lake. You can do some souvenir-shopping if you want before departing for Mumbai. It will take a little more than 2 hours to drive to Mumbai from Matheran, over and above the toy train down to Neral.
