How Driving Distance Is Calculated Between Two Locations

Algorithm for calculating driving distances between cities.

This route calculation tool harnesses the power of shortest path search algorithms within a weighted road graph, employing sophisticated algorithms like Dijkstra, A-Star, and Contraction Hierarchies . Unlike conventional calculators that use distance or travel time as the graph weight, our system optimizes drive time for vehicles, favoring routes on higher-class roads for a smoother journey.

The backbone of this tool is built on OpenStreetMap data, ensuring our road graphs are accurate and up-to-date. We calculate distances between road segments with the haversine formula , using precise GPS coordinates to measure the Great Circle Distance. This formula is pivotal for calculating "air distance" or "straight line distance" between two points, taking into account the curvature of the Earth.

Road distances, however, diverge from straight line distances due to the natural curvature and layout of roads . To address this, roads are represented as segmented lines, and the haversine formula is applied to each segment, allowing for precise calculation of the journey length between any two points.

Recognizing that cities encompass large areas, our tool selects a central point within each city for distance calculations between cities. For personalized route planning, users can specify exact addresses or select points on the map. Additionally, the route's start and end points can be adjusted directly on the map for enhanced customization.

Travel time calculations break down the route into segments, evaluating the maximum permitted speed for each segment to estimate the fastest possible travel time.

It’s important to note that while our route calculation relies on advanced computer modeling for accuracy, no model is perfect. We encourage users to plan with a margin for adjustment to ensure a reliable and efficient journey.

Alternative Methods for Distance Calculation Between Two Addresses

One simple way to measure distance is by using a highway atlas. By tracing a route with your eye and rolling a curvimeter along it, you can gauge the distance. Estimating travel time involves assuming an average speed of 50 miles/hour on major intercity roads. Although this method provides rough estimates, it's straightforward.

In the absence of a curvimeter, a ruler can serve as a substitute. Start by aligning the ruler's zero mark with your route's beginning and follow the road's bends closely. Then, translate the measured length into kilometers or miles using the map's scale, which is typically provided in the atlas.

For those seeking a more streamlined approach, pre-calculated distance tables specifically for the USA are available on websites, atlases, and guidebooks. Particularly useful for journeys between major cities, these tables streamline planning, although they may omit smaller locales.

Drive Time Calculator

How to use drive time calculator, estimated time of arrival, travel time to home, meet the creator of the drive time calculator.

The drive time calculator – also known as the travel time calculator, is our innovative tool created exclusively for drivers. It helps you find out the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at your car trip destination and determine the fuel costs of the journey.

So, if you are planning a vacation trip with friends in a seaside resort or would like to estimate the travel time to home by car, check out our drive time calculator!

Our drive time calculator covers every aspect of your trip: it calculates the total time needed to complete your journey, predicts your arrival time at the destination, and determines the overall cost of the drive, including the cost per person.

To accurately determine your arrival time and the total driving duration, follow these steps:

Before entering any values, choose your preferred units of measurement , where applicable. For instance, you can opt for imperial or metric units when specifying distances. This selection will determine how the calculator interprets your inputs.

Enter the total distance of your trip.

Specify your average driving speed during the trip.

Enter the total duration of breaks you plan to take during the journey.

Specify the departure time , day, month, and year.

Upon entering these details, the tool will calculate the total driving duration and exact arrival time based on your input.

If you're interested in determining the costs associated with your trip , use the second section of the calculator and follow these steps:

Specify your car's fuel consumption rate .

Indicate current fuel price .

Input the number of passengers traveling with you.

The calculator will subsequently determine the total drive cost and the cost per person based on the provided information.

For example , consider a scenario where you must drive 140 km (87 mi) at an average speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). You plan to take a 30-minute break, and your departure time is January 22, 2024, at 7:00 pm. In this case, the calculator would compute a total drive time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, estimating your arrival at the destination on January 22, 2024, at 9:15 pm.

Moreover, if your fuel consumption rate is 8 liters per 100 kilometers (62 miles) and the fuel price is $0.90 per liter, the total cost of your journey would be $10.08. If you're traveling with a companion, you could split the cost, resulting in $5.04 per person.

🙋‍♂️ If you need to be at a specific destination by a particular time and are wondering when to depart, our calculator has you covered — it works in reverse, too! Here's how to use it:

Input when you intend to arrive at your destination in the variable arrival time .

Enter the total distance you need to cover.

Specify the average driving speed you plan to maintain.

If you plan to take breaks during the journey, enter the total duration.

The calculator will determine the optimal departure time , ensuring you reach your destination as planned!

Have more questions about the estimated time of arrival? Keep reading.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle, ship, aircraft, or cargo is expected to arrive at a particular place.

For example, a particular cruise bus may have an ETA calculated based on the expected average speed on a particular road. The travel distance is simply divided by the speed to roughly estimate the arrival time. This method does not consider any unexpected events (such as car accidents on the road or bad weather conditions) that may occur on the way to the driver's destination.

Visit our speed calculator to learn more about how to calculate speed.

Let's assume we are driving home with friends from a winter vacation in the mountains.

The distance to our home city is 850 km .

We are driving with an average speed of 110 km/h .

We will make three short 15-minute breaks and 1-hour long dinner break, which gives:

Total time of breaks = 3 × 15 min + 1h = 1h 45min

We will start the trip on the 21 February 2018 at 10:00 am.

Now, the most interesting question – when will we be at home? Let's calculate the total drive time:

Total drive time = (distance/average drive speed) + total breaks time = 9h 28min

Arrival time: 21 February 2018 at 07:28 pm

Now, we want to know how much this journey will cost us. With our drive time calculator, the answer to this question is very simple!

  • Let's assume that our SUV car takes 9.5 liters of fuel per 100 km.
  • The gasoline price is €1.22 per liter.
  • We are traveling as a group of 4 friends -> Number of passengers = 4

The answer to the question is below:

Total drive cost = (distance/100) × car fuel consumption × fuel price = €98.52

Drive cost per person = total drive cost/number of passengers = €24.63

Super! Now, we know all we need – the exact travel time to home with an estimated arrival time and how much each passenger needs to pay for that journey. Let's start the engine! 🙂

We also have a great tool called traffic density calculator that helps you analyze the traffic on any road.

Check out the gas calculator , too, if you need to estimate the fuel cost for a drive.

I'm Filip, the mastermind behind the drive time calculator, and I'm a biomedical and electrical engineering graduate from AGH University of Krakow.

My motivation to develop this tool emerged during a road trip, where the challenges of planning a long journey, including costs and time uncertainties, became evident. In response, I envisioned a solution — a tool that calculates travel duration and considers essential factors like fuel costs. The outcome is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify journey planning , whether for extended trips or daily commutes.

Why trust this tool? We put extra care into the quality of our content so that they are as accurate and reliable as possible. Each tool is peer-reviewed by a trained expert and then proofread by a native speaker. If you'd like to learn more about our standards, please check the Editorial Policies page .

How do I calculate the average speed for my trip?

To calculate your average speed for your trip, you must note the trip distance and drive time or travel time and follow these steps:

  • Subtract the total time used for breaks from the drive time.
  • Divide the trip distance by the difference obtained in step 1.
  • The value calculated is the average speed for the trip.
  • Verify your result with our drive time calculator.

How fast can I reach Boston from New York driving at 60 mph?

It'll take 3 hrs 35 mins without any breaks. Allowing for a 15 min break, it'll take you 3 hrs 50 min. Here's how you can calculate this answer:

If you take the I-90 W, Boston is 215 miles from New York.

Divide this distance by the average speed to get drive time without breaks:

215/60 = 3.5833 = 3 hrs 35 min .

Add a 15 min break to drive time for a convenient and safe drive to get a total drive time of 3 hrs 50 mins .

Verify with our drive time calculator.

How do I calculate mileage of my vehicle?

To calculate the mileage of your vehicle, follow these steps:

  • When refueling, note the initial odometer reading and the amount of fuel you're filling.
  • When you stop for fuel again, note the final odometer reading .
  • Subtract the initial odometer reading from the final reading and divide the difference by the amount of fuel used.

How far can you drive in one day?

Assuming you drive for 8 hours in a day at 60 mph, with 15 min breaks every 2 hours and an hour-long lunch break in between, you can drive 390 miles . To calculate this answer, follow these steps:

Calculate total break time :

15 min + 60 min + 15 min = 1 hr 30 min .

Subtract this from 8 hours to get 8 - 1:30 = 6 hr 30 min .

Multiply this time with 60 mph average speed to get the distance traveled:

60 × 6.5 = 390 miles .

Verify this result with our drive time calculator.

What is TravelTime?

Travel Time Map Generator & Isochrones

I know i can get from a to b by public transport within my selected time, but it's not showing up.

If you're using public transport to do your analysis, it can look like we don't include a specific transit line. But it is rare that we have forgotten to add it! We have a full data team collecting transport data, and they're rarely caught out. It's usually due to understanding how we calculate travel time catchments. We build the area to include:

  • Walking to the station platform
  • Waiting for the next available departure
  • Time spent boarding the train
  • Giving enough time to take the A to B journey
  • Depart on the station on the other side.

That means if you set your max travel time at 30 minutes, and the train journey you think should be included takes 28 minutes, it probably won't show up, because the other steps push it over the max 30 min limit. Try adding an extra 5-10 minutes to your max catchment area and see if this helps! Understand how we built our public transport model

You can't drive that far / you can drive much further than that

We recommend that you do a little experiment.

  • Open another mapping app of your choice and enter an A to B route
  • Select a departure time for tomorrow.

The average mapping provider gives very vague driving estimations. It's not uncommon to see a journey estimation between 30 minutes up to 2 hours. That's a lot of buffer room!

Our driving model only returns one singular best possible time estimate. We do this using our purpose-built driving model. Explore how we've built our driving model.

Still not convinced?

You can explain your data issue to us here and we can help you out. Please include in your request whether you're using the API for commercial or personal purposes.

About this tool

This demo was built to showcase the TravelTime API. To use the full capabilities of the API you will need coding skills, or experience with one of our integrations: QGIS, Alteryx or ArcGIS. Access to the API gives you larger travel time catchment areas, more transport mode options and large request volumes. Access the developer playground here.

What is a travel time map?

Our map tool allows you to create a 'How far can I go map' by transport mode and time limit. For example someone can ask how far can I drive from my home in 30 minutes. The tool outputs shapes, also known as travel time isochrones visualise where's reachable. Sometimes these shapes are incorrectly labelled as a 'travel time radius map'. A radius is always just a circular shape, but a travel time shape is completely unique as it analyses all locations reachable using a specific mode of transport.

How to create a drive time radius map or other modes

  • Select a start location
  • Select a maximum travel time limit
  • Select a mode of transport, for example driving
  • Voila! There's your driving radius map

Use cases for consumers

  • Create a commute time map so you can see where to live based on commute time.
  • How far can i travel in a given time: compare transport coverage for different areas.
  • Create a drive time radius map: explore how far you can travel on a road trip.

Use cases for businesses

  • Travel time mapping up to 4 hours & cross reference other data sets in GIS such as population data
  • Site selection analysis: analyse the best location to locate a business by adding thousands of analysis points
  • Create a distance matrix or travel time matrix & calculate travel times from thousands of origins to thousands of destinations
  • Network analysis / travelling salesman problem: use spatial analytics to solve routing problems
  • Commute time map - plot thousands of employee commute times for an office relocation

This web page is a limited demo that can do the following:

  • Create up to 3 time polygons visualising where's reachable within 2 hours or less. Our API can create large travel time areas, talk to sales.
  • Calculate travel times from an origin to various points of interest - in this demo we use points from Foursquare Give A to B routing details

How Distances Are Computed Between Cities and Points

Algorithm for distance and travel time calculation.

This calculator utilizes shortest path search algorithms within a weighted road graph, including Dijkstra, A-Star, and Contraction Hierarchies . Unlike other calculators that typically use either distance or travel time as graph weights, this tool optimizes for drive time with a preference for higher-class roads, factoring in road priority.

The road graph is built using OpenStreetMap data, calculating distances between road segments from their precise GPS coordinates with the haversine formula , which measures the "air distance" or straight line distance between points. Since road distances deviate from straight line distances due to curves and directional changes, the tool models the road as a series of straight segments. For each segment, the haversine formula is applied, allowing accurate calculation of road distances.

Recognizing that cities span more than a single point, the tool selects central points within cities to calculate distances. Routes can be personalized to start or end outside city centers by inputting specific addresses or choosing points on a map. Additionally, users have the flexibility to adjust the start and end points directly on the map.

Travel time is estimated by segmenting the route and assessing the maximum speed limit on each segment. This information helps calculate the fastest possible travel time for the journey.

It's important to note that route calculations are based on computer models, which aren't flawless. Planning should include allowances for potential inaccuracies .

Alternative Distance Calculation Methods

Opening a highway atlas and manually plotting a route offers a straightforward method for estimating distances. Rolling a curvimeter along your chosen path allows you to gauge approximate mileage. For time estimations, consider an average speed of 80 km/h on main intercity roads. Though these figures are rough, their simplicity is a clear benefit.

In the absence of a curvimeter, a ruler makes a good substitute. Starting with the ruler's zero point at the beginning of your route, trace along, closely following the road's twists and turns. Then, translate this measurement into kilometers or miles based on the map's scale, typically found on each page of the atlas.

Distance between cities can also be determined using tables in atlases and guidebooks , a particularly handy method for journeys between major urban areas. It's worth noting, however, that these tables often exclude smaller towns. For those planning routes between major cities, pre-calculated distance tables for Australia , accessible on various websites, atlases, or guidebooks, offer a straightforward method. It's worth noting, however, that these tables might not cover smaller towns.

NCDOT: Asheville Merrimon Avenue road diet early data is in: What does it show?

road travel times

ASHEVILLE - Preliminary data from the Merrimon Avenue road diet returned largely positive results, N.C. Department of Transportation engineers say, with a reduction in total crashes, slower speeds, more cyclists along the corridor and an increase in average travel times of 2-14 seconds at peak evening hours.

The road diet for the central Asheville corridor was the subject of contentious debate. It was approved in May 2022 by Asheville City Council and resulted in the conversion of a section of Merrimon Avenue from four lanes to three, adding 5-foot bike lanes along both sides of the road.

An NCDOT resurfacing project, it impacted about 2.5 miles of Merrimon Avenue from I-240 to Midland Road at Beaver Lake. While the entire stretch was repaved and restriped, only the northern section, from W.T. Weaver Boulevard to Midland Road, was subject to the road diet.

The project began in October 2022 with the lane conversion, but work persisted for months as crews milled, resurfaced and repaved the road, bringing curb ramps into ADA compliance and finalizing drainage work. The bulk of the work was finished by February 2023, but the project was officially completed in May 2024 with the optimization of the traffic signals, said Hannah Smith, NCDOT Division 13 planning engineer.

Looking at the early metrics, she told the Citizen Times July 1 that they are viewing the project as a "success." Smith said it was intended as a safety project for all motorists, not just pedestrians and cyclists, and that they always expected a tradeoff in capacity and travel time for safety benefits.

NCDOT Safety Evaluation Engineer Carrie Simpson reported preliminary numbers to the city's Multimodal Transportation Commission June 26.

"I was really happy to hear that what we had hoped was confirmed by the data," said council member Maggie Ullman, the commission's liaison, of the reported improvements.

"The corridor is safer for all modes. And we're seeing that here, in our community."

Safety metrics?

Safety data is "generally positive," Simpson said, with reductions in reported crashes on the four- to-three lane conversion section.

Crash datasets were pulled using the Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System, which contains information on all reportable traffic crashes occurring in North Carolina, according to NCDOT.

Preliminary safety data shows a 23% reduction in total crashes and a 30% reduction in injury crashes on Merrimon Avenue within the road diet area, as well as slight reductions in total crashes for the sections to the north and south, Simpson said.

Short term trends when examining "crash types" suggest a reduction in frontal impact crashes, down 55% — which includes head-on, angle, left-turn and right-turn crashes — and an increase in rear end crashes, up 67%. Overall it is a "safety win," she said, as front impact crashes typically result in injury.

For the five-year "before" period, from October 2017 to September 2022, there were nine reported pedestrian crashes and two reported bicycle crashes, resulting in 10 injuries of varying severity, and one property damage crash only.

In the "initial after" window, 1.42 years, from October 2022 through February 2024, there was one reported pedestrian crash and one reported bicycle crash, both of which resulted only in property damage.

The presentation noted the roadway was still under construction for part of the "initial after" window.

Safety data is also being studied on alternate routes, Simpson said, and preliminary results for total crashes vary, with a slight increase on Broadway Street, no change on Kimberly Avenue, and a reduction on Lakeshore Drive. Injury crashes showed reductions for all three routes.

Speed, travel metrics?

For the entire 4-mile Merrimon Avenue corridor, average travel times ranged from 8-10 minutes. The following changes were reported by NCDOT:

Northbound direction:

  • 19 second reduction in average travel times at 9 a.m.
  • 1 second reduction in average travel times at 1 p.m.
  • 14 second increase in average travel times at 5 p.m.

Southbound direction:

  • No change in average travel times at 9 a.m.
  • 8 second increase in average travel times at 1 p.m.
  • 2 second increase in average travel times at 5 p.m.

Comparing datasets from September 2022 and October 2023, the average daily volume was down 1-8% — from 12,000 to 19,600 vehicles, as compared to 12,400 to 21,300. Just north and south of the road diet, Merrimon Avenue saw drops in average daily volume of 1-4%.

Speeds were reduced in the conversion section, Simpson said, dropping by an average of 3-5 mph, which can result in improvements for safety and the severity of crashes when they do occur.

Vehicle volumes were up on some nearby streets, like Broadway Street, Lakeshore Drive, and Woodward, Kimberly and Farrwood avenues, varying from 5-16%. The heaviest increase was on Kimberly, part of which runs parallel to Merrimon, with 600 to 900 more vehicles per day.

In studying adjacent routes, Simpson said the diverted traffic did not result in a significant increase in crashes for the corridors, but that it's something they would continue to watch.

How many cyclists?

Bicycle volumes increased in 11 of 12 data collection points, despite rainfall during some of the October 2023 observations, Simpson said. At the northern end of the treatment section, the number of cyclists increased 269%, up 35 bicyclists over two-day counts. Almost 700 bicyclists were counted in October, as compared to over 400 in September 2022.

Pedestrian volumes varied, with some locations showing increases and some decreases, NCDOT reported. Over 1,900 pedestrians were counted in October, as compared to almost 2,200 in September 2022. Simpson said rainfall likely played a role in the 2023 count.

Simpson said more data collection will occur in the fall and NCDOT will have another summary of information early next year. The city's agreement with the department in 2022 included a removal clause if the project were to be reversed, and certain metrics that might result in that reversal. Simpson confirmed they have not met any of those metrics.

The presentation was met with positive reactions from the multimodal commission, with hope that the data might address some of the "trepidation" around the project.

"The narrative from a lot of people initially was that this was going to cause ... on the scale of minutes more (spent) trying to traverse this part of the roadway. So, to me, 2-14 seconds increase in the amount of travel time is worth all of the reductions in crashes and injuries," commission member Elyse Marder said. "I think having this data really just shows that the scale of what people thought was going to happen is not happening."

Ullman, who lives in North Asheville and travels Merrimon Avenue daily, said she doesn't see a "downside" to the project, and praised the partnerships between the city, NCDOT, the multimodal commission, community members and advocacy groups like Asheville on Bikes.

"This is a real success in what it looks like to work across jurisdictions and across the community to say, 'we're going to pilot something to try to make the community better, we're going to track it with data.' And if the data came back differently, we would be having a different conversation," Ullman said. "The data has proven that the pilot has been successful."

Travel tips for a Fourth of July that's set to break records

road travel times

Luke Garrett

Airports around the United States are preparing for what could be the busiest Fourth of July travel season on record. The nation's roads are no different. Traffic could reach never-before-seen volumes over the Independence Day holiday.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”

Nearly 71 million people are expected to make trips for the Independence Day travel period, AAA predicts.

Here's what to know about traveling for the holiday this week.

The TSA sets a new record and readies for another

Last week, a record-breaking 2.99 million passengers went through U.S. airports in a single day, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The agency said it's expecting a new travel record this week.

At Philadelphia International Airport, Gerardo Spero, the TSA’s federal security director for the airport, is dealing with an 8% passenger increase this year and is cautioning travelers to give themselves extra time.

“The best advice that I can offer is to get to the airport well before your ticketed departure time,” Spero said in a news release . “Now more than ever it is vital to give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, check in with your airline to check bags and prepare for the security checkpoint."

There's usually no need to panic when planes make emergency landings. Here's why

There's usually no need to panic when planes make emergency landings. Here's why

Spero also said travelers can help each other out by being "efficient" in the security lines: take off shoes and belts preemptively, empty your pockets into your carry-on, and grab a bin early.

Over at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport — where travel volumes are up 5% — the TSA wants travelers to double-check their carry-on bags before they get to the airport.

“We are asking travelers to be good partners with TSA and ensure that they are prepared for the screening process," TSA Federal Security Director for Washington Greg Hawko said in a release . "Please don’t bring prohibited items in your carry-on luggage."

The busiest airport days are expected to be July 3, 7 and 8, according to flight website Hopper . The company projects Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver airports to be the ones with the most travelers.

This rise in summer air travel comes amid heightened attention on aircraft maker Boeing's quality control practices after a door plug blew out on a 737 Max jet in midair at the start of the year. Still, flying is the safest way to travel .

On the road

Nearly one in five Americans are set to drive more than 50 miles this Fourth of July travel season, according to an AAA forecast .

If you want to beat the traffic, drive early. INRIX, a transportation data provider, said driving on Monday should save travelers time. Any day after that, the best time to drive is before 10 a.m.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX , said in a statement. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal.”

The state put the first diverging diamond at a notoriously traffic-clogged intersection in Springfield where it could often take as long as 20 minutes to make a left turn.

When driving on the wrong side of the road is the right way to speed up traffic

If you are preparing for a longer road trip with family and friends, AAA recommends running through this checklist: check kids' car seats, bring an emergency pack (first aid, jumper cables, snacks and water) and map the route.

At the pump, drivers can expect lower gas prices than last year with a gallon costing an average of $3.50. In 2023, gas cost $3.53 per gallon and in 2022, it cost nearly $5.

This year, the states with the most expensive gas are California ($4.80), Hawaii ($4.71), Washington ($4.21), Oregon ($4.07), Nevada ($4.04), Alaska ($3.90), Illinois ($3.88), Michigan ($3.70), Washington, D.C. ($3.66), and Indiana ($3.65).

Another cost to consider is tolls. Not all states have them, but check your route on Toll Guru to see how much change you might need on hand or how much money to have loaded on the E-ZPass.

The weather factor

High temperatures and a few thunderstorms are in the forecast for much of the country, according to AccuWeather . Both can cause travel delays.

The worst heat is expected in California.

Wyatt Seymore pours the last drops of liquid from a water bottle into his mouth on June 17 as he takes a break from unloading a stiflingly hot trailer of fireworks outside Powder Monkey Fireworks ahead of the opening of the stand in Weldon Spring, Mo.

Heat wave safety tips from the world's first chief heat officer

"It's going to be downright hot across the Southwest, especially in California and the Desert Southwest where record highs will be challenged," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joseph Bauer told the website.

The Southern Plains and Southeast regions are also expected to feel the heat over the Independence Day weekend with higher than average temperatures.

High temperatures can slow down travel. When temperatures get too high, railway tracks can start to bend — forcing trains to slow down or stop completely. And planes may face weight restrictions during severe heat.

Traveling during the morning or evening can help offset the risk of heat-related delays.

While much of the country will face high temperatures on the Fourth of July, the Northern Plains, Midwest and portions of the Northeast may see thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

Flight delays and cancellations

As a rule, airlines are required to offer travelers a refund or book them another flight if they cancel a passenger's flight. The rules surrounding flight delays are more complicated.

Airlines are ordered to give full refunds instead of vouchers and to stop hiding fees

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

This story is featured in our One Notable Number series , which spotlights the key numbers leading our coverage.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.

Makeshift tunnel causes a sinkhole on Highway 529 in Everett

Mike Lindblom

Someone’s handmade tunnel caused a sinkhole and emergency repair closure Tuesday morning on northbound Highway 529 between Everett and Marysville, before traffic resumed at about 2:50 p.m.

The site is beneath the left lane as traffic enters the Union Slough bridge, which is part of a long segment of road that passes over wetlands.

Washington State Department of Transportation workers called for a state trooper at 9:01 a.m., after noticing damage and a man wandering nearby.

“Crews discovered a hole formed on the road from an individual tunneling underneath,” WSDOT announced on the social media platform X at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday.

The hole measured about 1 foot diameter at the surface, spreading to 3 feet below the roadway, and 4 feet deep, WSDOT spokesperson Aisha Dayal said. Crews cut the pavement to create clean edges, filled the hole with gravel and patched it with asphalt by early afternoon. The hole formed in the left side of the right northbound lane, Dayal said, and a WSDOT photo shows the black patch also extending over the left lane.

This is the second time in Everett that a man-made tunnel caused a highway lane closure. In 2021, WSDOT temporarily closed the northbound Interstate 5 exit to Pacific Avenue as a precaution. The ramp wasn’t damaged, but authorities worried a man was trapped inside. No one was actually in the tunnel.

Traffic in part of the Highway 529 corridor was already reduced to one lane each direction all summer , to accommodate a major bridge-rehabilitation project over the Snohomish River.

Tuesday’s hole, between the Snohomish River and Union Slough, is unrelated to that project.

UPDATE: NB SR 529 at E Marine View Dr in #Everett remains fully closed for emergency maintenance. Crews discovered a hole formed on the road from an individual tunneling underneath. Crews are repairing the damage. There is no ETA for reopening. Continue using ALTERNATE routes. https://t.co/qwoQNDrmFw pic.twitter.com/jcH5OkmA2q — WSDOT Traffic (@wsdot_traffic) July 2, 2024

For a few hours, traffic crossing the river toward Marysville was diverted to get onto northbound Interstate 5 at Everett Avenue.

The Washington State Patrol sent a trooper to interview highway workers, who reported seeing a man nearby, said Trooper Kelsey Harding, a spokesperson in Snohomish County. There has been no arrest and no suspect found yet, she said. Troopers are investigating the incident because it caused thousands of dollars of damage to state highway property, she said.

History of Perm

Foundation of perm.

The territory of Perm has been inhabited by people since ancient times. More than 130 archaeological sites, from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages, have been studied here. About 17 thousand years ago, there was a Paleolithic site in the center of today’s Perm. During the excavations, several thousand different stone tools were found. The inhabitants of the site were hunting reindeer and horses.

In the 17th century, these lands belonged to the Stroganovs family, famous Russian merchants. The first written mentions of a settlement on the territory of the historical center of Perm (the village of Yegoshikha) date back to 1647.

In 1720, by order of Emperor Peter I, Vasily Tatishchev, the managing director of the Ural state-owned factories, a famous Russian historian and geographer, went to Siberia Governorate to build factories for smelting copper and silver. He chose a place near the village of Yegoshikha for the construction of a copper smelter because of the presence of copper ore and a river for the transportation of goods.

In 1723, the construction of the Yegoshikhinsky copper-smelting plant began, which became the moment when Perm was founded. In 1736, the Motovilikhinsky copper-smelting plant was founded about 4 km from the Yegoshikhinsky plant upstream of the Kama River.

More Historical Facts…

In 1759, the village near the Yegoshikhinsky plant was destroyed by fire, only the church and several houses around it survived. In 1764, instead of the wooden church, a stone one was built - the Peter and Paul Cathedral - the first stone (brick) building in Perm. This building has survived to this day.

In 1780, Empress Catherine II signed a decree on the creation of a town named Perm on the basis of the Yegoshikhinsky plant, which became the center of Perm Governorate. In 1783, the coat of arms of Perm was approved with the following description: “In a red field there is a silver bear, on which the Gospel is placed in a gold frame, above it there is a silver cross, meaning the savagery of the indigenous people and enlightenment through the adoption of the Christian law”. Today’s coat of arms of Perm is the same.

In 1788, the Yegoshikhinsky plant was closed due to the depletion of deposits. Copper production continued at the Motovilikhinsky copper smelter. Perm began to develop as an administrative, trade, transport, and cultural center of the Urals.

Perm in the 19th - early 20th centuries

In 1840, British geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, studying vast outcrops of geological strata in the vicinity of Perm, discovered the Perm geological period named after this town. In 1842, a fire broke out in Perm, in which the entire central part of the town (about 300 houses) was destroyed. In 1863, due to the depletion of copper ore, the Motovilikhinsky plant was also closed. In the same year, the Perm cannon plants were laid downstream of the Kama.

In 1868, a population census was carried out in Perm and its environs. The residents turned out to be: 11,381 men and 8,175 women in Perm, a total of 19,556 people; in the Motovilikhinsky plant there were 4,399 men and 4,321 women, a total of 8,720 people. In Perm, there were 14 churches, up to 40 stone and 2,900 wooden houses, 353 shops.

The end of the 19th century became a period of active railway construction in Perm. In 1878, the Perm - Yekaterinburg line was commissioned. In 1897-1898, the Ural railway was connected to the railway network of European Russia. Institutions of art and culture were actively developing in Perm too. In 1874, the construction of the opera and ballet theater began. In 1896, the first movie theater was opened (the electro-theater “Illusion”).

At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Perm, together with Motovilikha, was about 100 thousand people. In 1902, the first city power plant was opened.

In 1909, Perm was visited by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, a pioneer of Russian color photography. In 1909-1916, with the support of Emperor Nicholas II, he traveled to capture in color contemporary Russia, its culture, history, and modernization. In the collection of his photographs published on the website of the US Library of Congress, you can find 12 photographs taken in Perm.

Perm during Soviet times

In March 1918, a railway carriage under escort arrived in Perm with the Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich (the successor to the Russian throne after the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II and, according to some opinions, the last emperor of the Russian Empire), his personal secretary, and other exiles. The Grand Duke and his secretary were allowed to stay at the hotel. On the night of June 12-13, 1918, Mikhail Alexandrovich and his secretary were abducted from the hotel, taken to the forest and killed by a group of local security officers and militiamen. Their bodies have not yet been found.

During the Russian Civil War, clashes took place in the Perm region. The Bolsheviks called the capture of Perm by the Whites and their advance to the west “the Permian catastrophe”. In the summer of 1919, the Reds began to recapture these territories. Before the retreat, the Whites burned almost all water transport on the Kama, and also blew up the railway bridge across the river.

In 1923, Perm lost its status as a regional center, since, according to the new administrative-territorial division, the Ural region was formed with the center in Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg).

According to the 1926 population census, the population of Perm was 84,804 people (39,968 men and 44,836 women). On November 3, 1927, Perm and the village of Motovilikha were united into one city. In 1931, Motovilikha received the status of an independent town called Molotovo. In 1938, it was re-incorporated into Perm under the name of the Molotov district (Motovilikhinsky district today).

By 1939, due to industrialization, the city’s population had more than tripled and amounted to 306 thousand people. On March 8, 1940, the city was renamed Molotov in honor of V.M. Molotov, a politician and chairman of the USSR government in 1930-1941.

During World War II, the city’s industry was reoriented towards military needs. Molotov Oblast became one of the main regions that received the evacuated population and enterprises. A total of 124 industrial enterprises were transferred to this region, of which 64 resumed production in Perm.

In 1955, the construction of the Kama hydroelectric power station was completed. On October 2, 1957, the name Perm was returned to the city in connection with the condemnation of the so-called “personality cult” that began in the USSR after Stalin’s death (Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd in 1961). In 1958, the first stage of the Perm Oil Refinery was put into operation. In 1967, the construction of the Communal Bridge was completed - an automobile-pedestrian bridge across the Kama connecting the city center with the right-bank part.

On March 18, 1965, on the spacecraft Voskhod-2, cosmonaut A.A. Leonov made the first spacewalk in the history of mankind. Before landing on Earth, the ship’s automatic attitude control system failed. P.I. Belyaev manually oriented the ship and turned on the braking engine. As a result, Voskhod-2 landed about 180 km north of Perm. After two nights in the open air, the cosmonauts were taken by helicopter to the Perm airport. The road in Perm (part of the Kazan tract), along which they were transported, was later named Cosmonauts Highway.

By 1979, the population of Perm was about 1 million people. Population growth in some years was 15% and was the largest among all cities in the Urals.

Perm in the 1990s-2000s

After 1991, the population began to decline continuously. In 2004, it fell below one million residents. Perm was able to regain the status of a city with a population of more than one million people only in 2011.

In the 1990s, the football club “Amkar” and the basketball club “Ural Great” were founded in Perm. In the 2000s, they achieved success in Russian football and basketball (Amkar played in the Premier League, was a finalist of the National Cup and a participant in the UEFA Cup, Ural Great became a two-time champion of Russia).

In 2005, Perm became the administrative center (capital) of Perm Krai, formed as a result of unification of Perm Oblast and the Komi-Permyak Autonomous Okrug.

The end of the 2000s was overshadowed by several tragic incidents related to Perm: a passenger plane crash on September 14, 2008 (88 dead) and a fire in the nightclub “Lame Horse” on December 5, 2009 (156 dead and 78 injured).

Perm - Features

The districts of Perm are located relatively far from each other and are often separated by forests, because the city was formed as a conglomeration of settlements scattered along the banks of the Kama River. Therefore, Perm is the third largest city in Russia by area after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It stretches along the Kama for 70 km and ranks third in length after St. Petersburg and Sochi.

Another characteristic feature of this city is a number of small rivers flowing mainly along the numerous city ravines. Forests occupy almost half of the territory of Perm (about 400 sq. km.). The City Day of Perm is celebrated on June 12, simultaneously with the Day of Russia.

The word “perm” appeared in Russian language a long time ago. It was first recorded in the chronicle “The Tale of Bygone Years” dating from the early 12th century, which listed the names of various tribes. Today, most researchers of Permian toponymy think that “pera maa” (“remote, distant land”) was the territory in which the ancestors of the present Komi-Zyryans lived. In accordance with the peculiarities of the Old Russian language, the word “pera maa” was transformed into “perm”.

Thus, first the land in the basin of the Vychegda River and the tribes living on it began to be called Perm. And then this word began to be used to call the land and tribes in the basin of the Kama River - that is, the place of residence of the Permian Komi (Great Perm). Later this name spread to the entire territory of today’s Perm Krai. At the end of the 18th century, it gave the name to Perm Governorate and its capital - Perm.

The climate of Perm is moderately continental with high humidity due to the location on the river and the proximity of the Kama reservoir. Winters are snowy and long; summers are moderately warm. The average temperature in January is minus 12.8 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 18.6 degrees Celsius.

Perm plays an important role in the economy of Russia. The city’s economy is characterized, first of all, by a developed heavy industry. The leading industries are electric power generation, oil and natural gas processing, mechanical engineering, chemistry and petrochemistry, woodworking, printing, and food processing. In mechanical engineering, a significant share is made by enterprises of the military-industrial complex. One of the largest Russian bicycle manufacturing enterprises, “Forward”, is located in Perm.

This city is one of the largest transport hubs in the country. Perm occupies a particularly advantageous geographical position, as it is located in the center Russia at the intersection of the railway from Europe to Asia (the Trans-Siberian Railway) with a sub-meridional waterway to the five seas. Perm is home to the two easternmost river ports in Europe. From here it is possible to transport goods to the ports of the Baltic, White, Black, Azov, and Caspian seas.

Perm International Airport (Bolshoye Savino) offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Surgut, Ufa.

All major sights, theaters and museums are concentrated in the city center, on the left bank of the Kama. It is difficult to get lost in the historic part of Perm. The city was built quite logically - wide streets were constructed parallel to the Kama River. Less significant streets and lanes connect them to each other. Perm managed to preserve a lot of architectural monuments of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Main Attractions of Perm

The Kama River Embankment - one of the main recreation places for residents and visitors of Perm attracted here by picturesque landscapes and a rich cultural life (exhibitions, festivals, art projects, installations, concerts, sports competitions, etc.). The length of the embankment is about 4 km.

One of the attractions of the embankment is the picturesque building of the Perm River Station (Monastyrskaya Street, 2) built in the Stalinist Empire style, in which an interactive exposition “Russia - my history” is open.

Opposite the river station you can see the art object “Happiness is not far off” - one of the most recognizable sights of Perm. The two-meter red letters that make up the inscription are one of the main symbols of the city. This art object became famous in Russia when after water discharge at the Kamskaya hydroelectric power station this part of the embankment was flooded. The “floating” inscription about happiness got a lot of attention on Russian social networks.

Perm State Art Gallery . This museum has one of the oldest and most valuable collections of art objects in Russia, more than 50 thousand works of art created in the period from ancient to modern times. There are collections of Perm wooden sculpture, icons, engravings, antique ceramics, medieval painting, etc. The exposition is located in a building that is an architectural monument - the Transfiguration Cathedral (1793-1832). Komsomolskiy Prospekt, 4.

Sculpture “Permyak Salty Ears” - an urban sculpture made in the form of a circle-frame with ears, where you can place your face and take a picture. The composition also includes the figure of the photographer standing opposite, ready to take a picture with an old camera. The sculpture is located opposite the building of the hotel “Prikamye” at Komsomolskiy Prospekt, 27.

It is the traditional nickname of the residents of the Perm region. The origins of this expression go back to the 15th century, when salt began to be mined here. Salt workers often had to carry heavy bags of salt on their shoulders. From constant contact with a caustic substance, their ears were swollen and reddened.

Perm Regional Museum - the oldest and largest museum of the Perm region, which includes more than 50 collections of regional, Russian, and world significance. The main exhibition is called “The History of the Kama Region” and consists of exhibits (household items, jewelry, books) telling about the life of people who lived in Perm Krai, from ancient times to the 20th century. The museum occupies an old mansion, which is known as Meshkov’s House (a famous merchant and philanthropist). Monastyrskaya Street, 11.

A branch of this museum is the Museum of Permian Antiquities , the main exposition of which includes skeletons, fossils, scientific reconstructions of ancient animals, ores, and other paleontological and geological finds. Sibirskaya Street, 15.

With the city’s second NASCAR event complete, regular traffic will once again be allowed through portions of the Loop, city officials said Sunday.

The northbound section of DuSable Lake Shore Drive is set to reopen Monday at 6 a.m., and the southbound section of the road is on track to reopen Tuesday at 11 p.m., officials with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications said.

Both lanes of Michigan Avenue between Roosevelt Road and Monroe Street are set to reopen by noon Monday, though the northbound lanes of Michigan Ave between Van Buren and Jackson will have one lane closed.

Officials said their priority is opening DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive, though all businesses and residences near the temporary track will remain accessible throughout the tear-down.

“Street closures will remain in place until the track wall, fence, and viewing structures are demobilized,” the release said, noting this was expected to be finished by the end of the day July 18.

Current information on street closures can be found here . A day-by-day breakdown of closures with maps can be found here .

Fourth of July traffic will be record-setting. Here’s how to avoid the traffic jams

Traveling this weekend? Prepare for traffic jams.

Traveling for July 4? You’re hardly alone.

AAA estimates some 70.9 million people will be on the road in some form or fashion this year, traveling 50 miles or more from their home. That’s a 5% increase over last year and 8% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

And no transportation method will be more popular than the car. AAA says a record 60.6 million people will be clogging the highways and side streets. That’s 2.8 million more than a year ago. Hertz tells AAA that it expects to see the biggest demand for rentals in Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Lower gas prices and increased wanderlust are behind the increased number of people on the road.

So, how can you avoid being stuck in traffic jams for the majority of your holiday? It’s going to be challenging—and you might want to consider leaving either a bit earlier or a lot later if you want to avoid the worst of it.

AAA says the worst travel times on July 3 will be between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Your best bet is/was before noon. Those same windows will apply on July 4 as well.

If you’re making a long weekend of things, and planning to drive back Sunday, an early departure is a wise idea, ideally before 11:00 a.m. Things will be especially sticky between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., AAA says.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRI, a provider of transportation data and insights. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

In Chicago, that could be a 61% increase to the typical travel time to Indianapolis via I-65. Drivers headed from Tampa to Orlando on Wednesday can expect to spend an extra 58% longer in the car. And if you’re planning to drive from Baltimore to Washington, D.C., on Monday July 8, in the afternoon, it will take 67% longer than usual, as some vacationers extend the weekend even longer.

Going out of town for July 4th? Here are the best and worst times to travel.

Heavy traffic on Route 128 South in Waltham on Feb. 26.

Heading out of town for the July 4th holiday? Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

The July 4th travel crush has already begun, and experts at AAA predict record-breaking travel over the holiday week.

The American Automobile Association projects that 70.9 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home between June 29 and July 7, a 5 percent increase from last year and 8 percent more than in 2019, before travel numbers plunged during the pandemic.

A record 60.6 million people will travel by car, 2.8 million more than last year. Air travel is also expected to break records, with a projected 5.74 million people flying over the holiday — a 7 percent increase over 2023 and a 12 percent increase compared to 2019, according to AAA.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a statement. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever, with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

In the Boston area, congestion is expected to peak on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. southbound on Route 3.

According to INRIX, a company that monitors and analyzes traffic data, the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. INRIX recommends that travelers leave in the morning to avoid congestion. Returning travelers on Monday, July 8, should avoid morning and afternoon rush-hour traffic.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3rd, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, a transportation analyst at INRIX, in a statement. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67 percent longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

AAA also predicts that 4.6 million people will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. That’s a 9 percent increase from 2023 but less than the 4.79 million travelers in 2019.

“ Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback,” AAA said in a statement. “This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations.”

Leaving the Jersey Shore today to head home after a long holiday weekend? You might want to get on the road very soon — or wait until a bit later.

Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.” The worst delays when vacationers return home are expected today, Pishue said.

The worst time to travel from the Shore to North Jersey and New York Sunday? INRIX predicts peak congestion at 2:15 p.m. today, July 7. Travelers heading back tomorrow should avoid morning and afternoon rush hours by leaving very early in the morning or later in the morning and early afternoon, according to INRIX.
