Get to know Ticketmaster’s Smart Queue

If you aren’t familiar with  Smart Queue , it is Ticketmaster’s way of creating a clear and fair process for thousands of fans to buy tickets in a short space of time. Fans enter the virtual  Waiting Room  prior to onsale time before joining the  Smart Queue  – which acts as a ‘virtual line’, helping us protect you and your tickets in a more effective way.

The time you join the Waiting Room does not determine your place in the Smart Queue, so we recommend joining at least 10 minutes prior to the event going on sale.

When the sale begins, the Smart Queue will open and everyone in the Waiting Room is given a place in line. Those who did not join the Waiting Room will be placed at the end of the line.

  • Sign in to your Ticketmaster account at least 10 minutes before joining the Waiting Room. This will speed up your purchase later.
  • Confirm you have a valid form of payment in your account with current email and billing information. This will make checkout a breeze.
  • Resist the urge to refresh. Your page will automatically refresh when you enter the Smart Queue.
  • Keep an eye on the time! When it’s your turn, your spot will be held for 10 minutes to begin shopping.
  • Just like before, tickets are always based on availability, demand, and are not guaranteed.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Elton John tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as they’re progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Fans were treated to some of the most joyful and celebratory concerts Elton’s ever performed in the region, his hit laden set garnering rave reviews in both nations.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on August 1. Head to oznz.eltonjohn.com for full pre-sale and ticket information.

Elton John will play five special ‘encore’ concerts in Australia and New Zealand next year, extending his ongoing multi-year ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour’, which will mark his final run of shows.

John will kick off the new round of dates in Newcastle, New South Wales on January 10, 2023 before heading to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. He will then head to New Zealand to perform in Christchurch on January 24. He will then fly to Auckland to perform two rescheduled shows on January 27 and 28.

“In 2020 I promised that when I came back to finish my interrupted farewell, I’d perform some encore shows,” the singer-songwriter said when announcing the new dates. “I love your part of the world dearly and cannot wait to share these concerts with you!”

Tickets for Elton John’s newly- announced shows in Newcastle, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and Christchurch in New Zealand will go on sale on Monday, August 1 at staggered intervals beginning at 12pm local time. Members of Elton John’s Rocket Club will be able to access the fan club pre-sale on July 28. Tickets for the rescheduled Auckland shows are available now beginning at NZD99.

John recently began the UK leg of his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour in Norwich on June 15. Having first announced the first UK dates for his final ever run of shows in 2018, he had been set to play a run of rescheduled UK headline dates between October and December 2021.

However, he was forced to postpone those gigs to 2023 after sustaining a hip injury from an “awkward” fall.

John will have played over 300 shows across five continents by the time the tour concludes in July next year.

In an NME cover story last October, John said that this tour will really be his last, explaining, “It’s something I wanna finish. I’m looking forward to doing it and going out on the high that we were on – we were an express train that hit the buffers. At the moment I finish supposedly in 2023, in the summer, by which time I’ll be 76 – and that’s it, baby.”

Elton John’s new ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour ‘encore’ concert dates in 2023 are:

Australia: Tuesday, January 10 – McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle, NSW Friday, January 13 – AAMI Park, Melbourne, VIC Wednesday, January 18 – Allianz Stadium, Sydney, NSW Saturday, January 21 – Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, QLD

New Zealand : Tuesday, January 24 – Orangetheory Stadium, Christchurch Friday, January 27 – Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland (rescheduled) Saturday, January 28 – Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland (rescheduled).

“A huge thankyou to Auckland for keeping their tickets to the rescheduled shows for so long. I promised back in 2020 that when we returned we would take the opportunity to play a few encore shows.

“I know the last tickets sold fast and I wanted to be able to say farewell to you all. And Newcastle, I’m finally coming your way for my first Newcastle show ever!

“Join me for a night of memories, singalongs, and a fond farewell.”

Here are the dates and locations for the new Aussie shows:

Melbourne: January 13, 2023 at AAMI Park

Sydney: January 18, 2023 at Allianz Stadium

More information can be found on the official tour website .

The 75-year-old embarked on his farewell tour in September 2019, setting out to play 300 shows across five continents.

In what was meant to be his last performances in Australia, John played 19 shows Down Under, ending his visit with his final show in Sydney on March 2020.

Fans have been anxiously waiting for an announcement like this, after he hinted he would take the opportunity to return to Australia after Covid forced him to reschedule a number of tour dates in New Zealand.

Elton John Just Announced His Very Final Australian Tour For January 2023

Chris Singh

Elton John’s road to retirement has been long and winding, stuttered due to the pandemic and stretched by some length delays to his globetrotting Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. The legendary artist toured Australia back in 2019 with what was meant to be his final ever shows in this part of the world, but in a fortuitous twist, Elton John does Australia once again come January 2023. Announcing a round of encore shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and – for the first time ever – Newcastle, Elton John returns at the top of next year for what has been confirmed as his final run down under before he retires from touring altogether.

The reason for this is quite simple. Although 2019 was supposed to be his last time in both Australia and New Zealand, he was forced to cancel on the kiwis and reschedule his shows at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium. The ‘Rocket Man’ singer is set to honour those shows but clearly thought he might as well pop over the ditch for a bit of an encore to 2019’s wildly successful tour, which moved over 700,000 tickets across 34 Australian and six New Zealand dates just months before Covid-19 came along like a wet blanket.

We’ll still be getting the long, exciting greatest hits set list including the likes of ‘Your Song,’ ‘Crocodile Rock,’ ‘I’m Still Standing,’ and ‘Tiny Dancer,’ set against a large display cycling through behind-the-scenes images from Elton John’s five-decade career.

Remembering Elton John’s First Tour of Australia and New Zealand

As elton plays his 150th ‘farewell yellow brick road’ show in melbourne, we take a look back at his first tour of australia and new zealand in 1971..

By John F. Higgins

Elton’s initial journey to the “Far East”, as it was referred to at the time, was originally intended to be a single show in Sydney in the summer of 1971, shoved in between his two North American tours that year. But wiser heads prevailed, and it was expanded to include six shows over 14 days in the fall, after his third circuit of the US and before his Sounds For Saturday television taping in London on November 11. “I didn’t have too much time to ruminate on how much my life had changed,” Elton recalls of the time in his autobiography Me . “I was working too hard.”

Indeed! By the time the excursion began he had also managed to record his fourth studio album, regrettably referred to in the Australian press as Madam Across The Water . Misnaming aside, the LP would peak at #8 on the Australian album chart after its release in November, following the Elton John and Tumbleweed Connection albums, which had both reached #4 earlier in the year. The Aussies had also taken Elton’s Your Song  to #10 in the singles chart in May.

  • October 29 – Western Springs Stadium – Auckland, New Zealand
  • October 31 – Randwick Racecourse Stadium – Sydney, NSW

The Australasia tour had begun in Shibuya, Japan on October 5th and moved south on the 15th after a four-day break. Elton and his band, Nigel Olsson on drums and Dee Murray on bass, plus manager John Reid, Dee’s wife, Anett (the band’s seamstress), and others flew into Sydney from Japan and then on to Perth two days later for a press conference before the tour officially began on October 17th.

By far the furthest he had ever travelled in his 24 years, Elton was booked to play a football stadium, two tennis facilities, a rugby stadium, and a horse racecourse. By the end of the sojourn, he had managed to conquer the land down under, beginning a career-long bond and establishing a special relationship with a nation that took him under its collective wing.

But not without a few bumps at the start…

The Australian press initially seemed to be less focused on Elton’s talents than on a media-manufactured “snub” of the Dean of Perth, the Very Rev. John Hazlewood. Apparently, Elton was either unaware of a reception hosted by the head of the Anglican Church or too wiped out from travelling to attend so soon after arriving in the city. The non-issue was resolved when Mr. Hazlewood, who publicly stated that he took no offence, was invited to chat with Elton at his hotel. They discussed pollution, holidays, and Elton’s career, and the Dean was gifted Elton’s album catalogue to date.

More newspaper ink was wasted on the Commonwealth Police’s attention to Elton’s choice of badges on his denim jacket and jeans. The items, some of which the local authorities deemed to violate the country’s code of decency, had been hand-sewn all over Elton’s blue jean ensemble by Anett Murray. She ended up putting Elastoplast plasters on the offending bits and the musician was allowed to move on. Further, Elton was asked at the press conference if he took drugs (he didn’t) and Dee had to explain to a local promoter that he in fact did not have a day job back home. Even Elton’s hair, dyed orange with purple high lights, drew some unwanted attention. Elton’s then-manager was quoted as saying, “We never had the sensation-seeking in America, Japan or Europe. There [the media] wanted to know about his music.”

The entourage was driven to the gigs and taken sightseeing, visiting the Double Helix in Perth’s Kings Park, for example, in a Holden Special automobile and other sedans by their own drivers and local guides. The group had four days off in Adelaide, where they spent their free time going to the beach (sometimes wearing jackets and other cold-weather clothing) and a visit to see kangaroos and koalas. They stayed in hotels that made the Holiday Inns they had recently occupied in America look luxurious, which was somehow fitting as that song was included in the setlist along with Your Song , Country Comfort , The King Must Die , Friends , the Rolling Stones’ Honky Tony Women and others.

Using whatever Steinway grand piano was available at each venue, Elton performed a 90-minute, or longer, set, typically wearing white Bermuda shorts, a pink velvet long sleeve t-shirt, green and white Mr. Freedom shoes and, occasionally, knee-high red-and white striped socks. This last item could possibly have been an apparel pun of the nation’s nickname as they looked like what the Wicked Witch of the West wore in The Wizard of Oz .

The tour began on October 17 at Subiaco Oval in Perth, where 4,500 people welcomed Elton and the band to Western Australia and the continent at large. Elton, Dee, and Nigel took to the outdoor wooden stage – a sound shell hired from a local university – and, according to the Go-Set review, “By the end of the performance the crowd had risen to its feet screaming for more. Never before has there been such an ardent response in Perth.”

Perth has had its share of world-class performers including names like the Bee Gees, Deep Purple, Hollies, Free, Seekers and Cilla Black. But none has matched the intoxicating impact of Elton John! Go-Set Australia, “On the Perth Scene”, October 1971

Of the six concerts on the tour, only one took place indoors (the Festival Hall in Brisbane) and all but two (Brisbane and Auckland) were afternoon performances. Crowd sizes grew as the tour went on, with reports of 10,000 or more people at some of the shows and ecstatic fans rushing to the front of the stage and filling the open areas whenever possible. As one fan put it, “What people wanted was to just get a closer look at an incredible showman, Elton John, and Elton obliged with handstands on the keyboard, dance steps and much leaping and jumping.”

The final concert, at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, had Elton playing a white grand piano. By the time the concert was in full swing, a blue tarp awning held up on poles by local crew members had to be installed over the band while they were playing. The winds had become so strong at times that the makeshift cover nearly fell over onto the instruments and performers. Talk about taking the country by storm! The Sydney crowd was, like the others before them, rapturous: pounding on the stage, dancing in the aisles, and hanging off the speaker towers. Elton responded by taking his shoes off and throwing them into the delirious crowd during the encore.

Elton John is Mind Blowing … in the last fifteen minutes of the show [the crowd] were stamping on their seats, swaying to the music and ROARING after each number. … This is a concert you must not miss. Molly Meldrum

In addition to the performances, Elton found time to accept an award from Alan Healey of Festival Records and join Jeff Phillips in presenting awards for Best Bass Guitarist and Best Lead Guitarist on the TV Week King of Pop telecast. He was also feted at the Mandarin club in Sydney at the end of the visit, where he was given a patch for his jeans that read “Elton for Pope”.

At the end of a press conference, Elton was asked what he thought of Australia. His reply? “Well, I’m still smiling.” Since then, Elton has smiled a great deal, touring the country 18 times, for over 200 concerts in Australia and New Zealand, and enjoying a great many special personal moments and relationships there, a number of which are described in his new autobiography.
