Review of Ivan's latest ECU update

  • Add to quote

I just recently sent my ECU out to Ivan expecting to get the ECU flash, power commander, air filter, and block off plates. He called me and said that he is now offering a new package - one that you don't need the power commander for! He said that he essentially has added all of the tune to the ECU, enabling someone to get just an ECU flash and get the benefit that previously required the ECU + PC. This saves you the money of having to buy a power commander, but also means that if you ever wanted to go get dyno tuned, you'd have to buy a power commander first. In my case, I don't plan on any further updates, so just the ECU was fine with me. I installed the air filter and block off plates as well and boy what a difference. I just got back from my first day out since the upgrade and wow, what a transformation below 6,000 RPM. I still have a stock cat/midpipe with slip ons, so while there is a bigger hit (and meaner snarl) in the top range, the biggest difference is down low. Not only is there WAAAYYY more power, but it is also significantly smoother. I previously used a bad habit, where I would slip the clutch a bit as I rolled on the throttle to prevent the imbalance caused by the jerkiness of the throttle response. I no longer need or desire to do this at all - rolling on the throttle again is buttery smooth. I am also convinced that the higher RPM's have become less buzzy. I can't wait for summer where I'll be reaping the benefits of the lower fan turn on temperature as well. For anyone on the fence about doing this upgrade, especially considering the now cheaper cost of doing it, definitely take the plunge. Happy riding! PS: One minor thing of note, Ivan mentioned that the ECU tune was actually done on a bike with the full Akro setup. According to him, he wasn't concerned at all about using it on my essentially stock bike. I told me he'd be happy at any time to go back to a flash+PC if I wanted it, but I think I am more than happy with the current setup. Even if there would be another couple hp in getting the tune specifically for the stock exhaust, the rideability has improved so much that I am happy.

Congrats on getting the ECU flashed. Ivan has done a great job with our bike and the improvement over stock is nearly transformational. Having the fuel maps done in the ECU is excellent as the PC install is kind of a pain. The injector connectors can be a pain to remove.

And here is another Australian. I have looked up places on the internet trying to find an easier way to get my ECU modded but to no avail. You US guys have some suggestions? I don't fancy sending my ECU halfway through the planet.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

How much does it cost?

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

$350: Ivan's Performance Products

So now ivan can flash the pre 2014 models and you dont have to get a power commander, i thought he done away with the block off plates also, if thats the case im sending mine to him.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

I would double check with ivan before we think this. Ivan had the 3rd gen reflash completly finished, and had moved on to the 4th gen. I dont see him going backwards on this and eliminating the power commander. He may have, but lets check with him first.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

Info on is Web site have not change, pc is required for 3rd Gen bike.

I already have the pcv, but if Ivan were able to, I'd send it back to him, have it updated, and throw the pcv as far as I could. I does'nt hurt anything, but Id be just as happy without it.

Maybe brokeblinker will chime in and give more details

That sounds great brokeblinker im calling him tommorrow, did you ever figure out what that tappy noise was after doing the reflash.

I'm not noticing it as much now...I think it could have been a noise that has always been present, but since I usually wear earplugs, I just don't notice. Still not sure, but everything is still riding great and nothing "feels" off.

can you tell a big difference in the power down low compared to before, im assuming you would have to have the full exhaust before it would lift the front wheel by throttle alone

What is TL and Dr not required no longer

"tl;dr." is an abbreviation for "Too long; didn't read."

I bought the headers and I fitted the yoshI r77 cans for a 4 to 1 to 2 set up, for ivan's proformance package. I just did this about two months ago for my 2012 nk1 and I didn't need a pc5 but I still need a dynojet fc and block off plates. So what I'm gathering is if you stick with stock exhaust you only need the ecu flashed to get smoother throttle response? I thought that was what the fc was for.

Alright, let me try and be super comprehensive to clear this up. Old Ivan Package (can be done with, or without full exhaust - full exhaust makes more peak power but similar down low : ECU + Power Commander .(there are more or less expensive power commander options). The ECU has the changes to fan turn on speed, low speed torque limiting removed, ignition timing changed, fuel cutoff eliminated, etc. etc. The power commander has the premade fuel map that he has created for a given exhaust/intake configuration. You also have the option of taking the bike to a dyno tuner to get it fine tuned for your personal setup. New Ivan Package (can be done with, or without full exhaust - full exhaust makes more peak power but similar down low : ECU only . The ECU has the changes to fan turn on speed, low speed torque limiting removed, ignition timing changed, fuel cutoff eliminated, etc. etc. In addition, the ECU now comes preloaded with the fuel map that was previously done on the power commander . Because there is no power commander, you now do not have the option to take this to a dyno tuner. However, it also means you don't have to pay for a power commander. As far as I am aware, Ivan is still offering both setups. The block off plates are a different issue - they block secondary air injection and are optional as far as I am concerned. You can easily plug the hosing and practically remove it without actually removing it. This is less clean of an option, so people often opt to take the system out entirely and use block off plates while they're already in there installing an air filter or something similar. Additionally, Ivan recommends an aftermarket air filter for both of these options.

Called Ivan last Thursday, I can confirm the sans pc5 for 3rd gen. I sent my ecu to him...finally. and selling my pc5 as well, phew. Ordered the block off plates, also.

Gotcha brokenblinker. When I talked to Ivan about what I needed he never mentioned this set up and I didn't see it on his website either. I guess you can't get what you don't ask for.The block off plates do make for a cleaner install and if your doing the air box mod you might as well put them in.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

This is great news, i need this ASAP!

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

So I guess the resale value of a used PCV for a Ninja 1000 / Z1000 just took a significant nose dive....................

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

balls, and I have 2 lol...

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

ah the sound of dragons waking.

Just to add to this thread, I received my ECU yesterday. Havent installed the block off plates. Yeah, even leaning forward, it is wheeling 7-11k in first. Low speed throttle is awesome. Felt like low-mid range lost a little, but I only rode it for a few min.

I don't have a dyno, so who really knows, but I wonder if some of the reason it feels like the mid range punch is gone a little is because it now responds so much better lower. I really felt like this bike used to come alive at 6-7, now i feel like it comes on at 3-4. I think the removal of torque limiting down low makes the midrange feel less different by comparison.

A good rip through the mountains will be telling, where Im in mid to high range most of the time. You have a good point, though.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

When I look on his page I see 2010-2012, 2014-2015. The 2013 is available, yes? Sorry, got deeper and found it.

Damn. So now I need to remove the pc5 and the ignition controller. I'm so far behind.

I just got my ecu back from Ivan yesterday and so far I'm not really impressed. I have a bone stock 2012 n1k and I was really looking forward to the increase in power. Maybe my expectations were too high? I understand that you need a full exhaust to realize the power potential, but I don't want a super loud exhaust as I live in California. I only have 15 minutes on the bike with the ecu so far, so hopefully I will notice more of a difference with a little more time on the seat. The midrange seems less aggressive and it doesn't lift the front tire in first as easy as it did before. Has anyone else had this same experience with Ivans new flash? Do I need to do the airbox mod? Any ideas?

not to sound like a d!ck.... but I would imagine that you would call and ask Ivan these questions before hand. The tune/flash I have is for the full meal deal. If you have the map for that... of course it isn't going to work right on a stock bike. My bike wasn't even running right after the ECU went in. I got home from the shop and put in the new map... and it runs awesome. My bike is probably up about 16-18hp. I pull on almost every 1000cc supersport (except the latest gen bikes) to 200kph. The freakin thing is on the back tire for the first 3 gears.

Did you get just the ECU or ECU + PCV? If its just the ECU, then the tune is actually a tune for the full exhaust setup, so I don't know how big the power gains we got are (I also just did ECU). I noticed the biggest difference below 5K RPM, which is where I spend most of my time. I also didn't notice much more power in the midrange and high end, but it is a bit smoother I think.

PCV or ECU flash

  • Add to quote

So, I've read quite a few threads on having the ECU flashed vs installing external fuel management, and for the most part people seem happy with the flash. However, what would happen if something changed? If I have the ECU flashed, then, later on I decide to go with a set of pipes with less back pressure, or opened up the air intake, would I need to have the ECU flashed again? I have a 17 voyager, and for now, all I want to do is adjust the fuel curve so it feels more consistant and not so gutless at certain RPMs. It wasn't so noticeable during the break in period, but now, when I try to open it up a little, it just feels like it's bogged. I know the ECU flash will take care of it, but later on, I might want to change the pipes to something that sounds a little prettier. I have used a Power Commander before, and ended up getting the autotune 02 sensor kit. It's just a matter of plugging in a map, and maybe a little bit of tweaking to get it close to where it needs to be, and the autotune will do the rest. But I also know that any big changes require more tweaking or even rebuilding the map.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

Folks on the various Voyager forums/Facebook will advocate Ivan ECU reflash 95% of the time over Power Commander. Folks who had PC's and reflash cannot seem to even give them away after they reflash....let alone sell them. When you send in your ECU to Ivan, you fill out a form that details your current exhaust/intake set up. The ECU is flashed for what you have. If you make any major change to exhaust/intake, you have to send the ECU back to Ivan. You pay for shipping. I am frankly not sure if you have to pay for a reflash at that point. My suggestion is to call Ivan to clarify. If Ivan does any updates to the ECU flash on his end, he def will update it for you for free....you pay shipping/ All details here.... Ivan's Performance Products Ivan charges $350 plus shipping. In my case, I got my bone stock 2016 reflashed with 2000 miles on the bike. After 2000 miles, I experienced all the things Ivan's details in the above link that make the stock ECU such a dog. I had a brand new and way better performing bike when I got my ECU back from Ivan last year. The bike runs cooler as well Ivanizing. I just turned 10K miles. I also had warranty work done at my dealer after Ivanizing....the radiatior fan broke. No issues with the warranty. Not sure this answers all your questions, but if you call Ivan direct, he can clarify anything for you. The Ivan reflash will be the best single upgrade I will ever do to my Voyager. I am glad I did not wait long to do it. Plug and play.....very easy to pull and reinstall the ECU Good luck!

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

When I had mine flashed about 2 years ago, there were only 2 basic flashes. One flash if you have an air kit and one flash without an air kit. The exhaust didn't make a difference. With that in mind you really only have that one decision to make... to air kit or not. Looking at the dyno sheets on Ivan's site shows the largest power gains are reached with an air kit. The exhaust does make small power gains but it mainly changes when the power comes on (so to speak). I've changed from stock to drilled exhaust and drilled to V&H several times and the freer flowing exhausts move the power band further up the RPM range. So, how much power do you want with your drivability? :devil2:

Bought a PCV for mine for the summer so I can ride. Works very well with the right map. Will probably get the reflash this winter when bike is sitting anyway. PCV is not free but a used one is reasonable and with the right map it works very well.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

If it weren't for Ivan's flash, I'd have long ago sold my Voyager. It ran very well with the fuel controller, but with the flash, it runs perfectly. Absolutely no comparison. My fuel controller gathers dust hanging on a nail in my shop. Semidomestic... You'll find Ivan is very approachable to answer questions like yours. Due to the time-zone difference I've never actually spoken to him myself, but we've exchanged many PM's over the years before and after I had him flash my ECU. You should seek the answers to your questions straight from the horses mouth?

Note....from Ivan's website........... *** We will be closed August 20th through Sept 3rd *** We will re-open on September 4th All ECU's must be received by us and shipped back to you by August 17th

I bought my 2011 Vaquero a month ago. Couldn't stand the heat on the warm days. Just Tuesday last week I sent the ecu to Ivan and had it flashed. Got it back Friday. I have also put a k&n filter in it, wrapped the headers with titanium header wrap, and installed freedom racing dual slip ons. Runs cooler, smoother and performs a ton better. Would definitely do it again! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

Yep, No question Ivan Flash hands down. Don't waste time and money on the PCV. Like auwing1978 said I'm pretty sure after you pay for the flash and you make any major changes or if Ivan makes an update (you have to check back with his web site from time to time for updates I have had to send mine back once for an update) all you have to pay is the shipping Ivan will engrave on the ECU the current flash installed and will put a big Ivan sticker on the other side. Also if you do decide to go with the Ivan flash after he reopens Sept 3rd you only need to ship the ECU if you don't already know the ECU sets in the cage with the relays lift the ECU (the taller of the two) out of the cage and leave the relays (the shorter of the 2) in place under the seat L/H side just forward of battery.

I'll give Ivan a try when he gets back from vacation. It's not like I want to do 0-90 in 1.375 seconds, and I'll never put neighbor haters on it. That would be like running NOX and straight pipes on a motor home. I like quiet pipes, I just want the tone a little deeper and lose the feeling that it's being held back. I had the ECU flashed on my Roadliner and it was a terrible experience. I ended up having to buy a new stock ECU and went with a PC... But, it wasn't Ivan, and most of you guys swear by him, so I'll give him a try.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

A benefit of the ECU flash is better slow driving drivability. No jerkiness or stumbles after the flash. Cold startups and driving are also improved over stock. Able to use 5th and 6th gear at lower RPMs also. You will not be disappointed once you have it done.

kawasaki voyager ecu flash

Any idea where I can buy a stock ecu for a 2017 Voyager?

Hey robbono26 Go on ebay the scrap yards advertise there. I have bought several used parts with no problems also had to return 1 or 2 again with no problems . Unless you are looking for new then I would try Partzilla.com

A friend in Australia bought a used OEM ECU on Ebay here in the states and shipped it to me. I facilitated the Ivanizing and shipped it back to him. It cost him $200 on Ebay used.

Just sent my ECU in to Ivan. Put on Freedom Performance slip on pipes but just couldn’t get rid of the decel popping with the PCV. I increased fuel in both 0 & 2% throttle 1750-3000 rpm by increments of 10 but still got quite a bit of popping deceling down from 4 or 5th gear and hitting just below 2,000 rpm. Question: Is there any reason to keep the PCV connected when I get my ECU back? Can I just set the map to all zeros or is it best to just remove? Would there be any need to make any further fuel adjustments to the ECU now? Thanks!

These are excellent questions for Ivan... I presume to know what he's going to say though - so take that PCV on out of there. It only creates one more thing that might go wrong, and you'll never find any reason to make any fuel adjustments unless you want the popping back again. I get absolutely no popping at all with my FP Liberty slip-ons, and they sound very nice indeed. Deceleration in particular, is a very deep, satisfying tone. This is the only use I've found for my EJK fuel tuner since Ivan arrived - using up a nail in a dusty corner of my shop.

Electrical wiring Wire Electrical supply Cable Wood

PEG: I got the same pipes and I ordered the quiet baffles to along with them. The only problem I found is trying to slip them on stock head pipes. I had to use hi temp silicone to try and seal that connection. I used the same graphite? seals that were there but when I tightened the clamps I could still pull them FP mufflers off. Just couldn’t get a tight fit. So I used the silicone to stop any potential leaks. Can’t tell if it worked. How did you seal the connection? Did you have to buy new seals? Thanks.

I didn't buy any new seals, and I'm fairly sure everything bolted up OK. It's a little bit fiddlier than it needs to be, that FP connection, with the extra short piece of pipe to clamp in there, and I had difficulty with the right side, figuring out what was the best angle to tighten it all up at for the least sideways force... Now you've got me worried I need to check it.

#1 Call Ivan he will explain and answer any and all questions, 2 he told me you already have a computer in your bike ECU that manged the fuel , so why put PVC in it as it fights what the ECU is telling the bike to do so now you have impulses fighting the ECU and may make bike hard to to read whats right and wrong and cause problems along the way, Trust all of us thats had it done just do it and you will be a head of the game.

I have a buddy local with a Voyager that had a PC he messed with for a few years. He sent in his ECU to Ivan and took off the PC while Ivan was reflashing. Totally different bike when he reinstalled the reflashed ECU w/o the PC

Got the ECU back from Ivan. Installed, removed the PCV, and took it for test ride. So far I’m impressed! No more decel popping or backfiring. Just a low throaty gurgle when letting off the throttle. Makes the FP pipes sound really good. May even try taking the quiet baffles back out. I’m told however that by removing the quiet baffles it becomes a more free flowing exhaust and the loss of more back pressure may effect performance a little. Any thoughts?

I've noticed no less performance since swapping out my Cobra slashcut pipes for the FP Liberty's. When I first had Ivan flash the ECU I had an open intake on there as well (Chucksters), but wasn't fond of the noise from it. I removed the open intake and dropped back to a K&N replacement OEM filter - and the flash took care of any reduction in performance I may have experienced in taking that step as well. It just seems to me that whatever else you do... Ivan's re-flash trumps everything. I had the flash done while I had the Cobra pipes installed... It made them sound heaps better.
