The High and Mighty Tour

Photos and Review by Jess Williams
In May 2021, the High and Mighty Tour was announced. A stacked double headlining tour with Sublime with Rome and Dirty Heads, accompanied by reggae pop band HIRIE and I could not have been more excited. Four months later, the tour, which had been traveling across the nation all summer, had landed in New York City. It was a Friday night and I had just gotten off work. I hopped on a Coney Island bound Q train and headed to the beach for a night filled with ska, punk, reggae and pop music all in one.
I arrived at the venue, which conveniently sat just across the boardwalk from the Atlantic Ocean and just a handful of blocks down from the heart of Coney Island: Luna Park. Reggae was blasting from the speakers as I heard the screams of children on the rides in Luna Park in the distance. It was a sweet reminder that, despite the cold weather quickly approaching, summer was still alive and well within the Coney Island Amphitheater.
Opening band HIRIE took to the stage and set the energy bar high for the night. They danced across the stage, doing high kicks while playing the saxophone. Their smiles were surely contagious and it was looking to be a star studded evening. Towards the end of their set, HIRIE’s saxophonist switched up his instrument and took to the center of the stage with a long, thin wind instrument. It took me a second to realize that they were legitimately playing the didgeridoo, live on stage! Right in front of my eyes! It might not have been so shocking to other fans in the crowd that night, but I was maybe 12 years old at the Philadelphia Folk Festival the last time I had seen a didgeridoo — and I had certainly never seen it played during a concert before! It was an unforgettable moment on stage. HIRIE concluded their performance with just as much energy as they graced the stage with. Now, the anticipation was on.
Up next, Sublime with Rome performed. Standing in the photo pit, I had a moment of bliss when I realized that I was finally getting to photograph a bucket list band of mine. Fans along the barricade behind me were screaming almost as loud as lead singer Rome Ramirez was, during their opening song “Smoke Two Joints”. The iconic reggae band had the entire crowd on their feet, joints hanging out of their slightly parted lips as they slammed their beers together in a cheers. Sublime with Rome’s setlist featured a wide variety of Sublime songs that got the crowd going, including the highly problematic — yet fan favorite — song “Date Rape”. As well as other favorites including “What I Got”, “Wrong Way” and their final song of the evening, “Santeria”. Fans were singing along so passionately during “Santeria”, that my bones were shaking. I looked up and noticed that Sublime with Rome’s road dog had made an appearance during the final song. As the band rounded out the song, a stage tech continued to toss a tennis ball onto the stage and the pup would fetch it and return it. It was hard to tell if the hoots and hollers I was hearing amongst the crowd were in support of the killer performance that Sublime with Rome had just put on — or from the absolutely cuteness that was occurring on stage in front of us!
Dirty Heads took the headlining slot on Friday night. This being my second time seeing Dirty Heads, I kind of knew what to expect. But I was immediately blown out of the water! The stage production was immaculate. The lights and visuals on stage amped the crowd up and got everyone going especially during the fan favorite “My Sweet Summer”. Dirty Heads played a lengthy hour and a half long setlist that was chock full of hits, including “Bum Bum”, “Lay Me Down” — which Rome Ramirez joined them for — and the final song of the night “Oxygen”.
Seeing some of the most notable reggae/ska bands in the industry perform together on the beach out in Coney Island was one of the best ways to kiss the Summer of 2021 goodbye. Although the tour is wrapping up, I encourage everyone who has a date near them in the coming weeks to grab a ticket! This show is one that you definitely don’t want to miss!

About Dirty Heads
Following in the footsteps of their California brothers Sublime, Huntington Beach’s Dirty Heads mix hip-hop, reggae, and rock along with that laid-back So Cal attitude. The group formed in 2003 when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and with percussionist Jon Olazabal, an acoustic trio version of Dirty Heads began playing shows and building an audience.
They soon hooked up with producer Rob Cavallo and headed into the studio to record their debut album for Warner Bros., but differences with the label had them looking for other opportunities. Still, the band was able to retain most of its work, including sessions with drummer Josh Freese, along with the late-Beatles collaborator Billy Preston in one of the keyboardist’s last recordings. The finished album, Any Port in a Storm , would arrive in 2008, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The deluxe version featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song would top Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart just before the summer of 2010.
They followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This, in turn, led to an entire acoustic album in 2013 called Home: Phantoms of Summer . Dirty Heads’ next album, Sound of Change , would prove to be a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 while topping the Independent and Alternative Albums charts upon its May 2014 release.
Building on their renewed success, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team , featuring the singles “Vacation” and “Staloney.” Also included on the album was the track “So Glad You Made It,” featuring 311’s Nick Hexum. The single “Listen to Me” arrived in early 2019 and was later included on Dirty Heads’ Dave Cobb-produced seventh album Super Moon .

Ramirez reflects on 15 years of Sublime with Rome
Anaheim, Calif. — Before Rome Ramirez even owned his first guitar, there were a handful of songs that captivated him enough to deconstruct and learn them for himself on instruments he’d borrowed. On that list of songs was the “Wrong Way” by Sublime, a band he revered as a fan, never imagining that he would one day stand as their frontman.
“It’s come full circle,” Ramirez said in a recent phone interview. “I’ve been doing that for the last 15 years, and getting the opportunity to play the music that got me to become a musician and chart out around the world to meet the fans who are also like-minded individuals; it’s a beautiful moment.”
Sublime with Rome is bidding farewell to their fans before Sublime original members bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh take the stage with late vocalist Bradley Nowell’s son, Jakob Nowell, at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio and the No Values Festival at Fairplex Pomona on June 8. The project with Rome will release its fourth and final album on May 10.
“(The farewell tour) is going to be a celebration with the community and the staff that we’ve grown up with for the better part of two decades, and it’s just like a final celebration of replaying that catalog in-depth,” Ramirez said. Sublime with Rome recently played at the Cali Vibes Festival in Long Beach where it ran through Sublime’s “40oz. to Freedom” in full.
“It’s a wonderful part of my history that I will forever be proud of, and Godspeed and God bless Jakob, Bud and Eric on their endeavors,” he continued. “I just know that it’ll be great. That’s what this life is about, taking great opportunities, doing them to the best of your ability, and being thankful for it all along the way.”
Ramirez grew up in Northern California before he relocated to Los Angeles with aspirations to become a musician. Upon his arrival, he found himself frequenting a studio in Costa Mesa where we happened to rub shoulders with Wilson, the bassist of one of his favorite bands. The two of them hit it off and began to hang out and jam together, which Ramirez said felt surreal enough on its own.
“I just thought it was cool because I was already hanging out with the dudes from Sublime and Eric was on my walls growing up,” he said. “I remember texting my homie and being like, ‘Dude, I’m at Eric’s house right now on the beach. It is crazy! We’re jamming!’ It was like that for a couple of years.”
After one-on-one sessions with Wilson, they began performing at parties at the bassist’s home in Long Beach, where they would cover Sublime songs. Word of the gigs started to travel, and an idea for a new project emerged. Wilson then brought on Sublime drummer, Gaugh, and by 2009, they formed a new iteration of the group, Sublime with Rome, and debuted their first album, “Yours Truly,” in 2011.
“It was just such a journey for me and them by the grace of God, finding me, a super fan, who knew all the music. I don’t know what it was, but there was something in me that wanted to get together and take this thing to people,” Ramirez said.
According to Ramirez, Sublime with Rome was already gearing up for a farewell bid before the more recent announcement of the Sublime revival. For the singer and guitarist, the departure from the Sublime project marks a turning point and the start of a new chapter that he plans to navigate with a different approach. While he has fronted the group known to fans for its reggae island sounds melded with a touch of punk rock, he said that music was new to him in the beginning.
“I grew up on Sublime and love that music, but that was about to the extent of what I knew about the California reggae scene,” he said. “In complete honesty, I wasn’t really aware of it because I was from the Bay Area. Then I joined the band, and that’s where I was (learning about) it at the same time. So it was a very weird situation where I was literally meeting Pepper and listening to them (for the first time). It’s the same with Slightly Stoopid and bands like Rebelution, whom I had never heard of until we were on tour. I had no idea that the sound was so big and so popular, but I’m very grateful for it.”
Before collaborating with Wilson, Ramirez spent time in the studio making music with a more soul-infused sound that he has yet to fully unveil, but plans to when he releases more of his solo work. During the pandemic, the halt of live music and touring forced the band to take a break, which got him some alone time.
“I was having so much fun in the studio for myself,” he said. “I started livestreaming and connecting with these fans I’d been touring with for the last 10 years, and we started building this community. They started asking for music, making me want to make original music.”
Ramirez also grew up listening to Motown records, thanks to his parents’ music taste. He said he’s excited to release the music he’s been working on, which he describes as “Otis Redding meets Stevie Wonder meets Bob Marley’s rock steady vibe.” Hints of what’s coming out of his solo work can be heard on his cover of Lee Fields’ ballad “Forever.” He initially recorded the cover as a birthday present for his wife, but she convinced him to release it publicly, and he said its been received well by fans.
“I was borrowing a lot of that influence that I grew up with, which was a lot of soul and some traditional blues rhythm that my mom and dad were listening to,” Ramirez said. “When I joined Sublime, I just kind of bailed on that, but I’ve always been working on these types of songs.”
At the end of his time with Sublime with Rome, Ramirez finds himself in newer, but somewhat familiar territory. He frequents the studio more often, whether to record music for himself or other artists such as Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Enquire Iglesias, Jason Derulo and Dirty Heads. He’s also moved to a new city, Nashville, Tennessee, a place that’s drawn a lot of attention in recent years, especially in country music.
“There’s definitely an electricity, in terms of the music industry here, that I was missing being in L.A.,” he said. “I’ve been in L.A. for so long that I needed some new inspiration. For a songwriter and producer like myself, this is the only other place you want to go to be in the thick of it and to be able to work with great people who love music. To me, it’s like a vessel to be able to create with people I like to hang out with and just use the music as the excuse.”
