Top Sights & Attractions To See Before Cruises From Sydney

Sydney opera house.

The Sydney Opera House is the city’s defining landmark and a fabulous display of modern architecture. The exterior was designed in the shape of the sails of a sailboat, and its unique structure often gleams in the sunlight. The Opera House’s sail shape also provides excellent acoustics for the many performances that occur inside the venue each year, which include opera, ballet, music, comedy, kid shows, inspirational speakers, and more.

Taronga Zoo

Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is a popular attraction for animal lovers embarking on one of our cruises from Sydney. This award-winning zoo features over 4,000 animals, which includes species that are native to Australia as well as rare and endangered animals. Bondi Beach

Australia’s most famous beach is also one of its most beautiful. Bondi Beach is only about 15 minutes southeast of Sydney’s city center and provides a quintessential Australian beach-going experience. You’ll find soft golden sand, beachfront restaurants and bars, and lots of surfing and other water sports.

Manly Beach

Another popular beach to visit in Australia is Manly Beach, especially if you love surfing. Manly Beach was the site of the world’s first surfing contest back in 1964. While its legendary waves along the northern end of the beach at Queenscliff Bommie are only recommended for advanced surfers, the area on the southern end of Manly Beach has great waves for beginner surfers, too.

Play at Luna Park Sydney

If you’re looking for some family fun before embarking on a cruise from Sydney, head to  Luna Park, a restored amusement park that dates back to the 1930s. Both kids and adults will love going on exhilarating rides, taking a leisurely spin on the Ferris wheel, and gliding down giant slides. During your visit, you’ll also find carnival-style foods and games.

Where c an I eat in Sydney?

Foodies will love Sydney’s international food scene. From ritzy waterfront restaurants to laid-back eateries along one of Sydney’s “eat streets,” the city has it all. For an after-dinner drink, it’s hard to beat a cocktail in one of the sky bars located atop its many skyscrapers. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal in a setting like nowhere else, head to Sixpenny or Bennelong, an elegant restaurant located inside the Sydney Opera House.

What’s the culture and history of Sydney?

Sydney Harbour was originally the home of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. With the arrival of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788, the city of Sydney (named after Lord Sydney, the British Home Secretary at the time) was established as a penal colony of Great Britain. By 1840, the transportation of convicts to the city had ceased. A decade later, the population of the city grew exponentially after a local gold rush.

Up until 1900, Sydney was the capital of New South Wales, a British colony. But after the Commonwealth of Australia was established in 1901, Sydney became the capital of the state of New South Wales, which joined the Australian Federation. The wild and harsh start of colonial Sydney is now long in the past. Today, you’ll find a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with one of the most diverse populations in the world.

Where can I go shopping near the Sydney cruise port?

You will find an assortment of shopping malls near the Sydney cruise port. Some of the largest are Westfield Sydney, The Galeries, and World Square. For local boutiques, head to the intersection of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. In the neighborhood of Paddington, you’ll find shops with cutting-edge fashion from new designers. For souvenirs and art, head to The Rocks near the Sydney Opera House, or the Strand for Australian hats and boots.

How can I get around Sydney?

Sydney has a variety of public transportation options. Its extensive bus route system goes to many of the most popular tourist sites, plus there are a light rail and ferry service. In addition, the Sydney Metro provides fast, frequent service around the city. As for taxis, you’ll find them waiting right outside the Sydney cruise terminal, as well as in taxi ranks all around the city.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

Australia’s official currency is the Australian dollar. The paper bills come in increments of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Credit cards are widely accepted, but traveler’s checks are not. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, but is appreciated. If you do tip, a smaller amount around 10% is usually acceptable.

People enjoying Manly beach in Sydney, Australia

Bondi Beach gets all the attention, but Manly Beach in the Northern Beaches is a bit more local. The Corso is lined with shops and restaurants, including local favourite, Hugo's. If surfing is your thing, this is the place to be. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a fantastic way to soak in the city's coastline.

The Gap at Watsons Bay in Sydney, Australia

Walk Watsons

Hop on the ferry or one of the regular buses that go to Watsons Bay to enjoy the scenic hike around South Head. During your journey, you'll enjoy views of Sydney Harbour, North Head, the historic Hornby Lighthouse and, of course, the sapphire-blue Pacific Ocean. The Gap offers breathtaking views of the sea from the rocky cliffside.

Local Cuisine

With all the water surrounding you, it's no surprise that seafood takes centre stage on many plates in the city. Head to Sydney Fish Market for giant Sydney Rock oysters or classic fish and ships. Stop into a local pie shop for a traditional Australian meat pie, or explore Sydney's international side with udon or ramen noodles at a Japanese noodle bar, or seek out prawn dumplings in Chinatown.

An opal ring displayed on a stone

There are plenty of shopping centres in the heart of the city, including Westfield Mall, Pitt Street Mall and the wonderful Queen Victoria Building, which is now a shopping centre featuring top designers. Seek out cutting boards made from local camphor laurel – they're not only beautiful but also have natural antimicrobial properties. During your Sydney cruise holiday, look for jewellery made from opal, the national gemstone of Australia.

A “lonely” man tired of being single has decided to erect a giant $400-a-week billboard seeking “marriage and karaoke.”

Love-lorn Al Gilberti, 70, has paid for the billboard to be erected advertising his wish for a partner.

Found in Sweetwater, Texas, US, it has already been a success, with Al receiving over 400 calls and 50 emails in just two weeks.

The 20ft high billboard depicts a picture of Al, alongside text that reads: ‘Lonely Male Can Relocate Sweetwater’ followed by ‘Seeks Female Marriage Minded, Enjoys Karaoke.’

The previously married dad-of-one says the majority of the calls have been from people after his cash, but he’s hopeful he’ll find ‘Miss Right’ soon.

His three non-negotiables are loyalty, honesty and sincerity and says he would move anywhere in the US for the right person.

He even says he would move as far as the UK if it meant he found the love of his life.

Al, a former band promoter, from Burlington, Vermont, said: “The latest one went up on April 2nd and I’ve gotten over 400 calls and maybe 40 or 50 emails in just over two weeks.

“I have the calls redirected to a friend’s phone.

“It’s been more enquiries from people that are looking to gain something from me — which I get, I’d probably do the same!

“People were enquiring thinking I was someone rich to help with their bills!

I want to meet the right person but I haven’t had that person call yet.

“If I meet the right person I want to look at their eyes and see how they respond.

“I’d go to Europe to meet someone, I just need to get my passport sorted.

“I love Europe and I would probably go there – why not?

“I’m looking for someone that’s slim built and looks wise I don’t really mind.

“I just want someone loyal, I want someone honest about themselves and someone sincere, that’s going to be coming into something they really want to be in.”

As to what Al can offer a potential partner, he says he is a good listener and open-minded.

He added: “I can offer someone that’s going to listen.

“I have a retirement income, I’m in good shape, I don’t look my age and I’m open.

“A lot of seniors are close-minded, I’m not.

“I’ve been single since 2015.

“I was with someone that was 26 years younger – that tells you something else too, if the person is younger than me, I don’t really mind.

“I think everybody is kind of lonely – If it’s not someone that you’re with on a steady basis then you’re by yourself.”

A first date for Al depends on where the person is located.

He said: “If it’s someone who’s in Europe it would have to be on zoom for a while.

“From there if the person wants to come here to the US, that would be great, or I’d go over to the UK.

“I’m prepared to move anywhere within the US.

“It all depends on the person – as long as I’m not going to stump the money up and then I have to leave!

“Of course, I’m somewhat looking for fame with the billboard but I also want to meet the right person.”
