Located in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, the hill station comes around the lower edges of the Himalayas and is relatively the most pleasant place of all.

How to reach?

The nearest airport to Kasauli is the Shimla airport which is 55 km south of the hill station. The Jubbarhatti airport has frequent flights, but they are often subject to the fluctuating weather around Shimla.

Which makes the Chandigarh airport a usually preferred option. Located about 60 km from the town of Kasauli, there are regular domestic flights flying down here. Connecting major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar, Chennai, Srinagar, and Kolkata.

Both the airports have well-facilitated public transport services as well. From pre-paid taxi services to buses at nominal prices.

40 km from Kasauli is the railway station of Kalka. From the cities of Amritsar, Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Mumbai and so on, there are trains that go to the station of Kalka.

You can avail of the bus and cab services from here that’d directly take you to the valley.

The cities of Chandigarh, Delhi, Shimla, and Ambala have several buses and taxis making runs to the hill station.

There are several connecting buses as well through which you can make another bid after a brief halt. This will be convenient for those who prefer not to go on a long and tiring journey.

Roads are at a considerably good condition and follow a picturesque route that’d make you feel a lot more relaxed and comfortable through the journey. There’s a range of options in terms of the transport buses, and among these the Superfast and Super Deluxe options are the most opted ones.

For those driving to Kasauli, there’s a proper network of roads connecting from Delhi, NH1, Ambala to NH22. Passing through beautiful valleys of Zirakpur, Panchkula, Pinjore, and the roads that were part of the former Hindustan–Tibet Road.

Best time to visit

Kasauli attracts visitors throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Kasauli is between the months of April to June, as the weather is very pleasant. The town has become a haven for tourists looking for a respite from the scorching heat of the plains. The weather is moderately hot so light cotton clothes will do. The temperature rarely exceeds 32°C. The monsoon season, which lasts from July to October, is also a good time to visit. The rains make the place look even more scenic and green. It is better to pack a jacket or two, as the weather can get a bit chilly during October. As there are occasional showers, an umbrella is recommended.

Top Things to do

1. watch the sunrise at monkey point (manki point).

Distance – 3.4 km

Opening hours – 7 AM to 7 PM.

An unparalleled vantage point and the highest point of Kasauli. The place is believed to have been blessed by Lord Hanuman and so carries a really mystical aura to it. This you’ll witness for yourself when you hike up to watch the beautiful sunset colour the skies in its different shades.

The trail’s going to make you sweat and test the adventurer in you. So buckle up with your supplies for this moderately difficult hike. But it’s also simply astonishing with the view of the sparkly Satluj river from atop the hill.

There’s also a range of sights studded en route to the peak. From the Airforce station exhibiting their best arms and ammunition, a Hanuman temple perched auspiciously, monkeys camping right outside for the little treats tossed their way and a balcony-like view of chestnut and oak forests.

2. Bird spotting at Gilbert Trail

Distance – 2.1 km

Opening hours – 6 AM to 5 PM

Tucked in the army cantonment region of Kasauli, the Gilbert hill is among the few undisturbed and picturesque spots left here.

It’s a short trail leading up to the peak amidst clouds of mist. This is also why it’s exciting to spot birds flying through the clouds and camouflaging their colours within the forest.

The 1.5 km stone walkway begins from a lane that’s believed to be dedicated to lovers and traces its way through emerald foliages. What makes this paradise a more peaceful retreat is that not many tourists have Gilbert trails fall under their list of places to visit in Kasauli.

So if you’re someone who enjoys some tranquil time watching the nature at its best form, then the trail is where you’d want to go to.

3. Spooky trails of Dagshai

Distance – 22 km

Opening hours – 10 am – 12.30 pm, 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm (Jail and Museum timings)

Here’s a trip through the haunted narratives of Kasauli. Stylised from “Daag-e-Shahi” which translates to “a royal stain”, Dagshai was formerly a prison-like settlement arranged by the Mughals. While now it is converted into an army cantonment homing few locals, the stories and graves here bring spooky stories down to your platter.

It is not visited by many tourists, but travelling down here should definitely fall under an adventure seeker’s list. Wildly spread forests would accompany you at most times with its canopy.

Walking down to the Dagshai Central Jail and the graveyard that has a history dating back to the British colonial period. Few of these spots have been transformed into a museum and the vibes you’d get from here would surely send chills down your spine.

4. Exploring science through the Central research institute

Distance – 300 m

Opening hours – 9 AM – 6 PM (Monday to Friday)

One of the unusual yet enlightening spots of Kasauli. While the research centre cannot be visited from inside and is restricted to a tour around certain areas, it is imbued with a perfect blend of information and entertainment.

Managed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Institute that was laid down by the Britishers is now training the future minds of the country.

It is also one of the important centres conducting diligent research and development activities on vaccines and virology in collaboration with the World Health Organisation. Keeping the country’s name on high ranks since almost forever.

A guide through the history and science of the 75 years long institution is definitely a must-visit while you’re here.

5. Celebrate Kasauli with the year-round festivals

Distance – NA

Opening hours – NA

Kasauli is high in a festive mood throughout the year and they take the phrase “Life of the Party” quite literally.

Every month it’s a new fair or festival that adds colour to the entire valley. And regardless of you being a tourist or visitor, the festivities welcome everyone like their own.

From the Lohri festival celebrated during the harvest season to the Basant Panchami of the spring season, and everything in between. Kite flying in the cloudy days, buffalo fights with constant cheering, bonfires being lit, traditional thali cooked above the wood, people dancing around joyously, and so much more!

These are the times the community comes together and celebrate the health, wealth and prosperity that God had gifted to them. It holds immense religious and cultural importance.

Built-in a very classy style, the church with pastel shades will definitely gravitate you. Enhanced by Gothic architecture and distinctive features of a cruciform floor, clock tower, sundial, and so much more, this place looks heavenly.

Watching the sunlight reflected through the stained glasses, creating beautiful patterns right across the aisle. It’s an image that’d stay with you. And would make you want to revisit this beautiful place over and over again.

Distance – 120 m

Opening hours – 8 am – 8:30 pm

The place has got everything that’d keep you hooked for hours. Make sure to grab a lip-smacking plate of street food while you’re exploring this beautiful marketplace.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

kasauli travel places

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

kasauli travel places

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

kasauli travel places

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

kasauli travel places

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

2024 solar eclipse: Here are 3 places to drive from south-central Pa. to see full event

kasauli travel places

A solar eclipse this spring will offer a lifetime memory for viewers who see it − especially if they are in a location where the moon's shadow fully blocks the sun.

To see the full event, observers must be in an area known as the path of totality, which will include 13 states from Texas to Maine.

South-central Pennsylvania lies outside of the path of totality, but a sliver of the northwestern part of the state, including Erie, will be in it, said Brian Lada, meteorologist with AccuWeather.com.

For those who want to witness a total solar eclipse, this spring is the time to hit the road.

The next big total solar eclipse in the United States will occur on Aug. 12, 2045.

Anyone living in south-central Pennsylvania at that time will need to travel to a long distance, such as going to Florida, to see it, Lada said.

Booking a trip: What's the best place to see the April 2024 solar eclipse? One state is the easy answer.

Plan a road trip to reach a location in the path of totality

Hotels and vacation rentals already are booked in many places along the path of totality.

At this point, planning a trip to see the total solar eclipse likely will involve a long day on the road, Lada said.

He suggest packing a cooler with food and drinks. It will reduce the worry of getting to a busy restaurant.

Be prepared for traffic jams after the event is over, he said. Millions of people will be traveling to the path of totality. Viewers might want to hang out in the area for a period of time before heading for home.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it takes twice as long to get home because there's going to be so many people on the highway, going in the same direction," he said. "It takes one fender bender to turn that into a gridlock."

Three places to go from south-central Pa. to see the total solar eclipse

South-central Pennsylvania residents who are looking for the closest locations in the path of totality have the option of staying in the state or heading to New York or Ohio.

Here are three cities to go to be in the path of totality:

Erie, Pennsylvania: The city in the northwestern part of the state has been gearing up for the big event. Lectures, parties and other activities are planned. It will take about 5 hours and 15 minutes to get there from York.

Rochester, New York: Numerous watch parties are planned in the area . It would take about 4 hours and 45 minutes to reach the city from York.

Cleveland, Ohio: Heading west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the Buckeye state is another option, and Cleveland is in the path of totality . It takes about five hours and 25 minutes to get there from York.

Travelers also could head to smaller communities, such as Titusville, Pa., which is on the edge of the path of totality. A trip there is under 4 hours and 30 minutes. The Drake Well Museum and Park , the birthplace of the modern petroleum industry, will be celebrating the solar eclipse that day. Admission will be buy one, get one free.

Be aware that the duration of totality will vary depending upon the location within the path. For example, the length of time will be 3:42 in Erie while it will be 0:47 in Titusville.

Why viewers should head to a location in the path of totality

Not everyone will be able to make a trip to see the total solar eclipse, but for those who can, it comes highly recommended from those who have witnessed one in the past.

"The difference between what's happening in York and what's happening in this path of totality is literally the difference between night and day," Lada said.

It's going to turn to nighttime for a few minutes in the path of totality, he said.

During totality, viewers will be able to see the atmosphere of the sun around the moon, and planets and bright stars will be visible. Observers might even see a comet, said Todd Ullery, planetarium director for the York County Astronomical Society and solar system ambassador for NASA.

Ullery said he saw his first total solar eclipse in 2017. Others advised him to sit back and enjoy the experience and to not worry about taking photographs because they will not turn out.

It's amazing how much the eye can see, Ullery said. Photographs are not good representations.

"There's just nothing like it in the world," Lada said.

Spirit to Launch New Routes to Fort Lauderdale, Boston, San Diego, and More

The routes will begin in May and June.

Spirit Airlines is bringing more affordable domestic flights to popular destinations this summer.

The carrier has introduced a total of nine nonstop services out of Boston, Portland, Ore., Columbus, Ohio, and Salt Lake City, a spokesperson from Spirit Airlines shared with Travel + Leisure.

On May 8, the airline will begin flying 6x/weekly service between Portland and Chicago. Spirit will be the first low-cost carrier to fly this route, competing with multiple frequencies already offered by Alaska, American, and United.

Then in June, Spirit will launch several more routes across the map, with a notable expansion along the West Coast. The new services will be all offered once daily:

  • Boston to/from Detroit and Pittsburgh
  • Portland to/from Burbank and San Diego
  • Columbus to/from Newark and Boston
  • Salt Lake City to/from San Diego and Fort Lauderdale

The new routes come as Spirit and JetBlue announced the termination of their proposed merger earlier this month, which was intended to combine “low fares with great service.”

Interestingly, Spirit’s newest cross-country flight between Salt Lake City and Fort Lauderdale starts right as JetBlue ends this service altogether. As Spirit realigns its strategy, the low-cost carrier will also compete with JetBlue on other routes, namely from its focus city in Boston to Detroit and Pittsburgh.

In total, Spirit will debut nearly three dozen new flights that will begin just in time for summer, as confirmed by data from Cirium. Travelers will soon be able to fly to San Juan from cities like Houston and New Orleans, along with a list of new domestic flights beginning in May and June.

Spirit Airlines unbundles fares so it can provide the lowest possible price, with optional à-la-carte offerings, meaning seat assignment and bags come at an extra fee. However, Spirit’s newest routes are a win for all domestic travelers, as legacy airlines will remain competitive in pricing to attract fliers.

2024 Solar Eclipse: The 13 Best Places to See the Event

T he 2024 solar eclipse is less than one month away, making it the ideal time plan exactly how you’ll see the incredible event. On April 8, a number of cities throughout Mexico , the United States, and Canada will experience brief moments of dawn- or dusk-like darkness right in the middle of the day. The natural phenomenon, known as a total solar eclipse, happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and blocks the entirety of sun’s face. According to NASA , there won’t be another total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044, making it all the more important to catch this one. Here, AD covers everything you need to know about the upcoming event, including the 13 best cities to experience the eclipse.

What exactly is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

How do people safely watch a total solar eclipse?

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

How often do total solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

How long will the total solar eclipses last?

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The difference in totality length has to do with how far apart the sun, moon, and Earth are at any given time, since the latter two bodies both orbit in elliptical paths.

When the Earth is furthest from the sun—making the star appear smaller—and the moon is closest to the Earth—which makes the moon look big—totality can last for over seven minutes. As Astronomy Mag reports, these circumstances will line up in about 160 years, when a solar eclipse on July 16, 2186, will see almost seven-and-a-half minutes of totality. On the other extreme, if the Earth is at its closest point to the sun and the moon is at its furthest point from Earth, humans won’t see a total solar eclipse, even if all of the celestial bodies are in line. Since totality is all about the perspective of the viewer, this is also why each city will experience the 2024 eclipse differently.

This year, totality will last for a little over four minutes in some areas, which is significantly more than the two minutes that people experienced during the 2017 eclipse. As NASA notes, “During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little bit farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.” Seven years ago, the path of totality—which shows which parts of the world will be able to see the total solar eclipse—was only about 62 to 71 miles wide. This year, that path ranges from 108 to 122 miles wide. “Meaning at any given moment this eclipse covers more ground,” NASA explains.

How to read maps showing the solar eclipse path

As noted, this year’s path of totality is about 110 miles wide. Cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. In addition to longer totality than in 2017, this year’s path of totality covers more densely populated areas than the previous one. This means more people should be able to experience the total solar eclipse.

Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where are the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse?

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mazatlán, Mexico

Mexico’s pacific coast will be the first place in continental North America to experience the eclipse. Mazatlán, a popular resort city, is an ideal location to see the occurrence, as it is directly in the eclipse’s path. Totality will begin around 11:07 a.m. local time and last for four minutes and 17 seconds. Because it’s such an optimal place to see the 2024 solar eclipse, NASA is hosting a viewing event at Vidanta Mazatlán . Here, visitors will be able to watch screens showing telescope views of the eclipse in addition to other hands-on activities, such as projects for kids and touchable moon rocks.

Torreón, Mexico

Located more centrally in the country, the solar eclipse will also be visible from Torreón. Totality will start just before 12:19 p.m. local time and last for four minutes and 12 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be visible before and after totality, starting at 11:44 a.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.

Kerrville, Texas

Part of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a prime location to watch the 2024 eclipse. Near the Mexican border, it will be among the first US cities to experience totality, which will begin at 1:32 p.m. and last for almost four and a half minutes. Austin and Dallas are also in the path of totality, but will only experience the darkness for about two minutes and a little under four minutes, respectively. NASA is also hosting an event here, which will take place in Louise Hays Park and include live music, speakers, and programming for kids.

Russellville, Arkansas

Russellville, about 85 miles east of Little Rock, will experience four minutes and 12 seconds of totality, starting at 1:50 p.m. The city has planned a number of exciting programming for the historic event, including a solar eclipse festival and a concert with Grammy-winner Rhonda Vincent.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Located along the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau is one of the best places in Missouri to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. According to NASA’s map, totality will last for a little over four minutes, beginning at 1:58 p.m. Head to Old Town Cape, where the city is hosting a block party on the day.

Carbondale, Illinois

Informally known as Little Egypt—possibly because the area delivered grains to northern parts of the state during the 1800s famine or because the southern tip of Illinois is similar to the Nile delta region in Egypt—Carbondale will experience four minutes and 10 seconds of totality, beginning at 1:59 p.m. The city also experienced totality during the 2017 eclipse, though it will see a longer dark period this time around. Home of Southern Illinois University, the school is hosting public viewing at its football stadium.

Bloomington, Indiana

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event, since totality will last for about four minutes. The town is home to Indiana University, which is among our list of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Spend the afternoon strolling through the campus’s Gothic- and Romanesque-inspired buildings, and then catch the eclipse at 3 p.m. Indianapolis, the state’s capital, is another good city to watch the eclipse, but totality will last for less time, about three minutes and 47 seconds.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m, which will last for just under four minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Erie, Pennsylvania

Only a small portion of northern Pennsylvania will be within the path of totality. Erie, located along the shores of the lake of the same name, will be one of the best places in the state to see the eclipse. Totality will last for three minutes and 42 seconds, starting at 3:16 p.m. The local government has put together a map of public parks and other viewing locations to watch the spectacle.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York, will see three minutes and 46 seconds of total darkness, beginning at 3:18 p.m. There are a number of public “ watch parties ” happening in the city, which the government has compiled for visitors and locals. Midcentury-modern architecture fans may want to use the day to visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright–designed estate, which is hosting a special open house on April 8, allowing guests to watch the eclipse from the property.

Niagara Region, Ontario

Small parts of Canada will also witness total darkness during the 2024 eclipse. The Niagara region is the best place to see totality, which will start at 3:19 p.m. and last for three minutes and 15 seconds. Montreal will also experience totality, but only for a little over one minute.

Burlington, Vermont

Much of New England will miss out on totality during the 2024 eclipse, as the path will only cover parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Burlington is among the best places for those in the region to travel to, as it will experience three minutes and 19 seconds of darkness, starting at 3:26 p.m.

Houlton, Maine

Maine is the northern most place in the United States to see the total eclipse in 2024, also making it the last place in the country to experience totality. Houlton will be among the best places in the state to watch the sight, and darkness will begin at 3:32 p.m. and last for three minutes and 20 seconds.

Intrepid Travel Highlights Importance of India For 2030 Strategy— India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

March 27th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

India is a land of numerous local cultures and experiences, which can substantially enhance Intrepid's offerings for tourists in the country.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

Intrepid Travel talked about the importance of India as a destination to the group’s 2030 strategy. The tour operator currently operates 800 trips in the country as part of its offerings that allow travelers to experience the local culture of the destination.

Having operated in India for almost two decades, Intrepid aims to bring in 30,000 travelers to India by 2030, a bold ambition: It represents almost 300% growth. In 2023, Intrepid welcomed 7,500 travelers in India.

Last year, Intrepid CEO James Thornton had said the company was looking to bring more than 12,000 travelers to India in 2024. This would mark the company’s return to pre-pandemic numbers in the country.

Speaking at the Skift India Summit earlier, Intrepid Travel founder and chairman Darrell Wade had said that Intrepid could see themselves playing a part in India’s domestic travel at some point in the future. “While we may not be looking at it for the next two or three years but by 2030, we would,” he said.

India’s domestic air passenger traffic had been 152 million in 2023.

Talking about India, Wade said that while people may tend to gravitate to certain circuits, like the Golden Triangle, wherever possible, Intrepid looks to break that model and get people into a more diversified range of product. “Very often we find people enjoy it more when they’re doing something that they don’t expect to do and didn’t really even know they were signing up for,” he said.

Intrepid also plans to expand into areas, including accommodation and grow its presence in countries, like India.

Intrepid Travel currently operates around 800 trips across the country.

2030 Strategy: The company’s 2030 strategy is aimed at doubling the number of its global customers to 600,000 from 320,000 last year. Additionally, it is seeking to more than double its revenue to $1.3 billion by 2030.

Over 24,000 Weekly Domestic Flights to Take Off in India This Summer

The summer schedule for Indian airlines has been released and it will come into effect from March 31. According to the schedule, 24,275 domestic flights will be operated every week. This marks a 6% increase as compared to the previous year. In the ongoing winter schedule, carriers are operating 23,732 weekly flights.

Budget carriers IndiGo and Akasa Air and full-service sister airlines Air India and Vistara are set to increase the number of flights, while troubled low-cost carrier SpiceJet will be cutting down its weekly departures by over 22%.

The summer schedule includes 125 airports. These also include seven new airports that have been proposed by scheduled carriers, said Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) .

Internationally, Indian carriers will be flying to 37 countries from 27 domestic airports. Scheduled Indian carriers will operate nearly 2,000 weekly international flights.

Singapore Easing Visa Norms for Indians, Expects 1.5 Million Tourists

Singapore is working on seamless and easy visas for Indian travelers, Indian news agency PTI cited a senior Singapore tourism official as saying. The country is also focusing on increasing its hospitality infrastructure including hotel rooms to support an anticipated influx of visitors. It has 72,000 hotel rooms at present, and is working on adding 9,000 more.

The Singapore Tourism Board has not set any target for travelers from India due to the tourism market potential. It has acknowledged that the number in 2024 could reach 1.5 million. This would be higher than the pre-pandemic figure of 1.4 million tourists, and would be a growth of 36% over the 2023 arrival figures.

SpiceJet Settles Liabilities Worth $91 Million

Low cost airline SpiceJet has entered into a settlement agreement with Export Development Canada (EDC) to clear liabilities worth $91 million. This is the carrier’s biggest breakthrough in its financial restructuring so far. With this agreement, the airline is set to take full ownership of 13 EDC-financed Q400 aircraft.

The debt-ridden airline has reached several settlement agreements with its leasing companies, including AerCap, Echelon Ireland Madison One Ltd, and Cross Ocean Partners. As part of its settlements, it recently received three airframes and an engine . SpiceJet is looking to return to full capacity by restoring its grounded fleet.

IndiGo to Fly More International Routes

India’s largest airline IndiGo is planning to double in size by 2030. For this, it is looking to add more international routes and destinations to its network, said CEO Pieter Elbers . The company’s overseas presence is expected to be boosted by A321 XLR aircraft that can join its fleet next year.

In an interview with Indian news agency PTI, Elbers said that the 2030 ambition is to create an airline that would be double of its current size, global reach and footprint. For this, it is looking at more codeshare partnerships. Currently, IndiGo has partnered with British Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways, Qantas, KLM-AirFrance, American Airline, Virgin Atlantic, and Jetstar.

Hyatt’s India Pipeline 2024: Six Hotels to Open

Hyatt Hotels has announced its pipeline in India for 2024 . The brand will open six hotels across three brands in the country this year. Two Hyatt Regency hotels are slated to open in Kasauli and Ghaziabad, while the company will open Hyatt Place hotels in Aurangabad and Haridwar. Hyatt Centric Ballygunge Kolkata and Hyatt Centric Hebbal Bengaluru are also in the pipeline.

The company recently marked the launch of its ninth brand in India with the opening of Ronil Goa under the JdV by Hyatt brand. The hotel company also has a new Hyatt Place hotel coming up in Bangladesh this year, marking its entry into the Southwest Asian nation.
