Sustainability plan [ ]

Alongside the announcement, the band released a detailed plan outlining how they could have the least possible impact on the environment, resulting in 50% less carbon dioxide generated than during the A Head Full of Dreams Tour . Coldplay and a number of leading environmental experts worked on the plan for over two years, and it includes a number of innovative sustainability strategies. For example, the band has collaborated with BMW to develop the first "mobile, rechargeable show battery" to power each concert on the tour, and the stage will be constructed from "a combination of lightweight, low-carbon, and re-usable materials (including bamboo and recycled steel) that can be properly reused or recycled at the end of the tour." In addition, they have pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold. [2]

The tour, like the Mylo Xyloto Tour and the A Head Full of Dreams Tour, will include extensive pyrotechnic and confetti visuals, as well as a third generation of Xylobands for audience members to wear. However, according to Coldplay's sustainability plan, these features will be adapted in such a way that their inclusion in each show on the tour will be more considerate towards the environment: the band have stated that they are investing in "a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals", that "confetti used during the show will be 100% biodegradable and will require significantly less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours", and that the LED wristbands will be made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials". Coldplay Pledges to Lower Carbon Emissions on 2022 Tour

On Thursday (Oct. 14), Coldplay announced the dates for its 2022 global tour in support of the upcoming album 'Music of the Spheres.'

By Gil Kaufman

Gil Kaufman

Coldplay announced the dates for an expansive 2022 world tour in support of the group’s upcoming Max Martin-produced album, Music of the Spheres  on Thursday morning (Oct. 14). The stadium outing is slated to kick off on March 18 with the band’s first-ever show in Costa Rica, at the Estadio Nacional, before moving on to the Dominican Republic and Mexico and then touching down in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on April 23 for a U.S. run slated to last through a June 14 gig at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

H.E.R. is on board to support the majority of the dates, with London Grammar booked to open a July 10 show in Berlin and an Aug. 16 gig at Wembley Stadium in London. Tickets for the U.S. dates will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. local time here , with a release teasing that more dates will be announced soon.

In an effort to make the tour as sustainable as possible, the band announced that all the shows will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with pledges to cut tour emissions by 50% from the group’s 2016-17 world tour and plant one tree for every ticket sold. According to a release, each venue will be equipped with solar installations and other renewable power sources including waste cooking oil and a kinetic stadium floor with kinetic bikes powered by fans that will store energy in the first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery.

Coldplay are also encouraging fans to use low-carbon transport to and from shows through the official tour app, rewarding those who do with a discount at the venues, in addition to making sure that all merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. There will also be free drinking water and efforts made to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue; click here to see the full list of sustainability goals.

In a statement, the band said, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together. At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far. If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Coldplay review – one massive, euphoric singalong

Wembley stadium, London What lights up, wears alien masks and runs on Chris Martin’s gigawatt energy? It’s Coldplay’s latest, family-friendly attempt at global domination

O h, to have been a fly on the wall at the production meetings for Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour, currently winding up a run of six sold-out nights at London’s Wembley stadium. Umpteen stakeholders would have pondered the tour’s environmental aspects in the wake of Coldplay’s 2019 announcement that they would stop touring while they worked out how to make it less worse for the planet.

Sceptics should note that the band’s light-up wristbands, always magical, are now made of compostable plastic. Anyone with any passing knowledge of Coldplay gigs knows that the play of the colour across the venue, like a murmuration of starlings, is one of the greatest spectacles in stadium showmanship. The floor is wired to harness the kinetic energy of 90,000 bouncing souls. If only they could wire up Chris Martin himself, who exudes gigawatts of energy running around, belting out the hits. The band reportedly ferry stuff around using as little carbon as possible – although if any act could pull off a fleet of Phileas Fogg-style solar-powered hot-air zeppelins, it’s this one, with their Tiggerish optimism and penchant for unleashing brightly coloured balloons. The giant beach balls come out on Adventure of a Lifetime , two songs into this generous, career-spanning set – one that baffles as much as it dazzles.

Oh, to have seen the expressions when Martin (presumably) sketched out a series of lurid, light-up alien masks for the band to wear on Infinity Sign. The headgear abounds with antennae, eyes and ears, and for bassist Guy Berryman there’s a Marvin the Martian mohican. One of the core messages of Music of the Spheres , Coldplay’s ninth album, released last year, is: “ Everyone is an alien somewhere .” And while it’s hard not to applaud the band’s stance, it’s boggling to imagine what Martin (presumably) had to say to his fellow talented multimillionaires to persuade them to carry on like demented football club mascots and play their instruments at the same time.

Did no one balk at the embrace of puppetry, innovative as it is? Music of the Spheres is set in space (sort of) and co-stars the non-human Angel Moon , who “sings” a couple of tracks. Sure, everyone loves a Muppet – Angel Moon is the work of the Jim Henson studio. Martin duets with her (operated by a puppeteer) on Biutyful , a gentle love song about the redemptive powers of love in the face of everything going to hell in a handcart (even if handcarts are green modes of transport).

But while puppetry has an arty history, all this just feels like an appeal to an audience so young we’ve run out of alphabet to describe it. While Coldplay’s hook-up with BTS, My Universe , crossed over with Gen Z, and their song with Selena Gomez, Let Somebody Go , made hay with millennials, here Coldplay appear to be courting the under-10s. And did no one notice that Angel Moon looks like an unfortunate caricature of Grimes , the long-tressed, often winged, often alien-looking electronic artist whose own ventures draw far more knowledgeably on the history of sci-fi?

The problem is not some minor cringe. Coldplay have long since opted out of tiresome binaries such as cool v uncool; it’s the height of uncool to go on about how uncool they are. Biggest band in the world for some years. End of conversation.

Chris Martin in the middle of ‘90,000 bouncing souls’ at Wembley.

But their move away from rock into actual light entertainment is sealed tonight. Three evenings into the residency, Natalie Imbruglia replaces previous guest Craig David and performs her 1993 earworm Torn – not in itself the issue, so much as the massive singalong of Summer Nights from Grease . It’s in memory of the late Olivia Newton-John , who, Martin explains, he and his dad got to know in Australia some years ago in the company of Imbruglia. But doing songs from musicals, crowd-pleasing as they are? Coldplay seem to have thrown much to the wind in pursuit of the mass euphoric singalong, borrowing greedily from everyone in dance music, especially those with headgear, with the aim of building ever more vast audiences.

In 2014, Coldplay released A Sky Full of Stars , a collaboration with the late producer Avicii, a mile-marker where Martin et al became particularly enamoured of the euphoria of superstar DJ raves. Other forays followed, such as with Stargate (2015) and Something Just Like This, their hit with the Chainsmokers.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland at Wembley stadium.

Coldplay have always had a pop reach – the product of strong melodies, frontman charisma and songs about universals. They landed upon the “woah oh oh” as a form of Esperanto that allowed them to commune as effectively in Taipei as they do in São Paulo . But somewhere along the line, they began to actively expand into a kind of borderless, tune-mongering phenomenon. Music of the Spheres bears the hallmark of the biggest of them all, Max Martin , whose production style continues to shape the charts even now, 22 years after his signature smash, Britney Spears’s …Baby One More Time.

A missionary hellbent on increasing his flock, Martin’s expansionist drive is perplexing. Coldplay don’t seem like the kinds of guys to get caught up in macho pissing contests. Anyone with a passing grasp of environmental issues knows that exponential growth is a hubristic chimera, the core principle of capitalism responsible for the planet’s imminent breakdown. Also: does size matter? Martin is arguably at his greatest armed with just a piano and a bruised heart.

It is, categorically, a lot of fun to witness 90,000 people wig out to a band they love. People come to a stadium show for the absurd audio-visual lunacy . Yes, of course bands need to evolve. But Martin is perfectly capable of nailing the human condition without this massive outreach programme.

“Nobody said it was easy,” he sings on The Scientist, with 90,000 backing vocalists tonight, a lyric applicable to solving the climate crisis as it is to maintaining one’s art nearly a quarter of a century into the game. “No one ever said it would be so hard.”

How Coldplay shot a music video with puppets and still gave metro Phoenix a show

tour music of the spheres coldplay

Chris Martin of Coldplay was nearing the end of a crowd-pleasing concert at State Farm Stadium when he paused to thank the crowd for "how intense and wonderful" we'd been.

"If it's OK with you," he said, "we have to quickly shoot a video with all of you as the sort of energy."

And with that, he introduced a band of puppets called the Weirdos.

"They're from another planet, sort of," the singer explained.

"And we're just gonna be filmed in the audience as well. But please, if you could just give four minutes to this young band. They're just starting out."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

It wasn't the first we'd seen of the Weirdos' lead singer.

She'd joined Martin earlier on "Human Heart."

But this time, Martin and his bandmates — Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion — left the stage and turned the concert over to the Weirdos, who set up on the second stage and mimed along to "Biutyful" from Coldplay's latest album, "Music of the Spheres."

'You just have to follow your heart' : How Coldplay's Chris Martin learned to trust himself

The Weirdos music video shoot felt special, yet awkward

It was an unexpected bit of silliness that felt like being part of something special but also inserted a bit of an awkward transition into the proceedings as the action moved from the video shoot to Coldplay on a tiny third stage with the houselights up.

They quickly made up for the lost momentum with a haunting rendition of "Sparks" with Preston Wait on pedal steel guitar before treating the fans to a country song they'd written just for the occasion, "Phoenix AZ."

It was endearingly sloppy; Martin adopted a credible twang as he made his way through references to that city in the West "where they play basketball slightly better than the rest" and "feeling so good where the Cardinals play."

Phoenix concert news: Kendrick Lamar Big Steppers Tour headed to Phoenix

They returned to the main stage after that for a beautiful version of "Fix You," which became a massive singalong, following through with a rousing rendition of "Humankind" from "Music of the Spheres."

It would've been the perfect way to say goodbye. Instead, they brought the puppets back for a momentum-crushing second pass at "Biutyful," with Coldplay on the main stage this time while the puppets mimed along once again for the cameras on the second stage.

As the final hurrah of a two-hour concert? It fell a bit flat — a rare misfire for a band that would otherwise seem to have mastered the art of the 21st Century stadium concert.

If they had to play it twice, they should've come back with a final song that felt like something special just for us — maybe something that hadn't been played in several years after giving us something they hadn't played in several songs.

She was the Female Elvis. How a Phoenix rockabilly teen made the cover of Bob Dylan's book

The set included 'Yellow' and 'Something Just Like This'

Other than that, it was a great night at the stadium with the most successful rock band of the century.

They managed to put the focus squarely on their latest album while also offering an entertaining overview of their career, from a rousing rendition of "Yellow" to their Chainsmokers collaboration, "Something Just Like This."

There were achingly beautiful ballads, from "The Scientist" to "Fix You." Other songs, from "Paradise" to "In My Place" and "Clocks," went heavy on the widescreen grandeur, ready-made anthems that soared beyond the back rows of the stadium.

Still other highlights made the most of their eager embrace of club-ready dance grooves, from "Adventure of a Lifetime" to the throbbing house beats of the majestic "A Sky Full of Stars."

That may explain how they became the most successful rock band of their generation.

Interview: Robin Wilson on Gin Blossoms becoming more than 'the biggest band on Mill Ave'

Chris Martin's voice was up to the challenge

"A Sky Full of Stars" was the point in the set where Martin, whose vocals were up to every challenge the songs required, chose to ask the fans to put their phones away if only for a moment to "just be with us for one song."

There was no shortage of crowd-pleasing spectacle.

A camera followed the musicians as they strolled through backstage areas of State Farm Stadium to the strains "Flying Theme" from "E.T." After making their way to the stage, they dove right into "Higher Power," which featured fireworks, confetti and a wide array of flashing colors on the LED wristbands that were given to each ticketholder.

For the second song, "Adventure of a Lifetime," giant beach balls or balloons were dropped into the crowd as chimpanzees dressed as astronauts danced on the video monitors.

Bursts of flames shot from the floor for "People of the Pride" and the members of the band donned goofy science fiction masks for "Infinity Sign," "Something Just Like This" and "Midnight."

There's a silliness to Coldplay that offsets the seriousness of Coldplay to brilliant effect.

And they've clearly mastered both sides of that spectrum, especially Martin, whose enthusiasm for whatever mood he happened to be diving into at the moment was a wonder to behold.

His grin was everybody's grin in moments as intoxicating as "Adventure of a Lifetime," on which he told the crowd "Everybody go low/ Let's get down low" then had everyone jump as their LED wristbands cycled through colors.

There's a joy Martin brings to the table that makes it hard to understand how anyone could fail to be convinced.

A few weeks prior to the show in Glendale, Martin talked to the Republic about how "crazy good" the energy has been on their first tour since the pandemic shut everything down.

"Because everyone's so happy to be there," he said. "Most of all us. Any shred of complacency we might have had is long gone."

And you could definitely feel that joy in his performance.

The emotional vulnerability that introduced the Coldplay brand at the turn of century was every bit as powerful when Martin chose to use it. They've just added other flavors to the mix.

Toward the end of the set, he thanked the crowd for dealing with the traffic on the night of Game 6, adding, "I feel like choosing to go to a concert like this is not necessarily about whether you like the band but how much you can handle traffic."

H.E.R. was captivating in a spirited set

Between the traffic and the parking situation, opening for Coldplay at the first major stadium show in metro Phoenix since the start of the pandemic had to be a little less career-defining than formerly local Kacy Hill was thinking it would be.

I missed her set while swearing often in the traffic less than five miles from the venue.

Having made it there in time to catch the second half of H.E.R., though?

If you haven't seen this woman tear it up on lead guitar in her rhinestone-studded sunglasses at the helm of a gospel-flavored neo-soul ensemble with a vocal range that allows for the flashiness of a Mariah Carey with the raw emotion of a Prince, you're missing out.

The back half of her set included a medley of Queen's "We Will Rock You," Joan Jett's cover of the Arrows' "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and her own song "Glory," as well as a spirited cover of the Lenny Kravitz classic "Are You Gonna Go My Way."

But she was every bit as captivating when she hit us with a song she said was "totally brand new."

And we’ve been blessed with the most incredible audiences. We just love it.” Whether you’re preparing for an upcoming show or revisiting one you recently attended, explore the set list and put yourself in the crowd.

U2’s Bono drops ‘obvious’ Coldplay rock band truth bomb

U2 singer Bono endorsed Coldplay and believes they shouldn’t be judged by the standard rules of rock bands.

Appearing on the BBC’s Music Uncovered : The Genius of Coldplay ( via NME), Bono gave his opinion on the band. He recalled punching the air when hearing “Clocks” for the first time due to and having “the feeling of, ‘oh, this is just better than anyone else’s song at the moment.'”

His analysis of the band is that they aren’t just a rock band. He hopes that it’s an “obvious” observation.

“I should mention Coldplay are not a rock band. I hope that’s obvious. There is something much more interesting going on there like the Isley Brothers or something,” Bono said. “They should not be judged by rock rules… Rage is the river running under most rock formations. Coldplay’s music has a different source and I think it’s best revealed in this song ‘Clocks.’”

This summer, Coldplay will play Glastonbury for the fifth time. They are currently embarking on the “Music of the Spheres” world tour. The tour commenced on March 18, 2022. As of the time of this writing, the tour is set to conclude on November 16, 2024, after 177 shows.

As a band, Coldplay has won seven Grammys. They have been nominated for a total of 34 awards throughout their illustrious career. Their most recent nominations came in 2023 when they were nominated for three awards — Best Pop Vocal Album (Music of the Spheres), Album of the Year (Music of the Spheres), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“My Universe”).

Who is U2’s Bono?

Bono has been the lead singer of U2 since the band’s conception in 1976. As a band, U2 has been nominated for 46 Grammys and won 22 awards. Their most recent nomination came in 2015 when Songs of Innocence was up for Best Rock Album.

U2 is best known for their anthems such as “Where the Streets Have No Name” and political songs such as “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Pride (In the Name of Love).”

In fall 2022, Bono released his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. To promote it, the “With or Without You” singer embarked on his first solo tour, the “ Stories of Surrender ” tour. He extended it with an 11-night residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York City in 2023. For these shows, Bono was joined by Kate Ellis, Jacknife Lee, and Gemma Doherty.

More recently, U2 embarked on a new venture. They played their first concert residency in Las Vegas, opening the new Sphere venue. The band played 40 dates from September 29, 2023, through March 2, 2024.

The shows were centered around the band’s 1991 album, Achtung Baby. This meant that U2 brushed off deep cuts such as “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World” and “So Cruel” for the first time in decades.

Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton were present for the residency. However, Larry Mullen Jr. was not. He was recovering from health issues and missed the 40 shows. Bram van den Berg of the band Krezip filled in for Mullen and was present for the entire run.

Bono says Coldplay 'are not a rock band': 'There is something much more interesting going on there'

The U2 frontman names the song from Chris Martin's group that wowed him.

Bono just paid Coldplay the ultimate compliment.

The U2 frontman lauded the British band on an episode of BBC Sounds' eight-part series Music Uncovered: The Genius of Coldplay .

"I should mention Coldplay are not a rock band," Bono said. "I hope that’s obvious. There is something much more interesting going on there, like the Isley Brothers or something."

The group — featuring Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion — has won seven Grammys and boasts 34 Grammy nominations in the categories of rock, pop, and alternative over more than two decades. But Bono says they shouldn't be limited to those genres.

"They should not be judged by rock rules.… Rage is the river running under most rock formations," Bono continued. "Coldplay's music has a different source, and I think it's best revealed in this song ' Clocks .'"

The song is from Coldplay's 2002 A Rush of Blood to the Head album, which won the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy at the following year's ceremony.

"Clocks" blew him away. Bono remembered "punching the air in a manly but not aggressive way" and then the feeling of, " Oh, this is just better than anyone else’s song at the moment. "

"It just sort of sticks to you, tighter than time itself," the "With or Without You" artist said.

Martin & Co. would surely appreciate Bono's words.

In December 2015, as the band released its A Head Full of Dreams album, Martin told The Telegraph that Coldplay felt "like rock music has been done."

"The future of music is in new sounds and new ways of treating vocals. We wanted to add those colours to our palette," he said. "No one would ever put us in a list of the top 10 rock bands. We've maybe rocked out once, for 10 minutes. I don't think anyone would throw up the devil horns to any of our major works."

His bandmate Berryman said, "There’s an awful lot of rock music already out there. I’m not sure there is anything left to add."

Coldplay, who return to their highly lucrative Music of the Spheres tour next month, are expected to finish making new music by next year.

"Well, I know I can tell you our last proper record will come out in 2025, and after that I think we will only tour," Martin said on BBC Radio 2 in December 2021. "Maybe we'll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalog, as it were, finishes then."
