The Port houses the USCG Sector St Petersburg and serves mainly passenger ships - ferries (Cross-Bay Ferry boats), superyachts, cruise ships.

Cross-Bay ferries serve the Tampa-St Petersburg route seasonally (October-November thru May) since 2016.

  • In Tampa, the boats depart from Tampa Convention Center's dock, while in St Petersburg, they leave from North Straub Park's dock (near Vinoy Marina).
  • Departures from St Petersburg are on Wednesdays and Thursdays (at 4:45 pm), on Fridays and Saturdays (at 10 am), and on Sundays (at 11 am).
  • Departures from Tampa are on Wednesdays and Thursdays (at 10:45 pm), on Fridays and Saturdays (at 11 pm) and on Sundays (at 7:30 pm).

The Cross-Bay ferry service is a public-private partnership between the counties Pinellas and Hillsborough and HMS Ferries Inc (part of HMS Global Maritime (1994-founded as Hornblower Marine Services, based in New Albany, Indiana).

As cruise port, St Petersburg Florida was introduced with the 2023 schedule of the ACL-American Cruise Lines catamaran ship American Glory .

Next table shows the 21-night/22-day "Complete Southeast" itinerary from Baltimore to St Petersburg. Prices started from US$ 17260 per person with double occupancy.

As cruise port, Saint Petersburg is also included in the ACL's itinerary "Florida Gulf Coast & Keys" (7-night/8-day roundtrip from St Petersburg).

Prices started from US6010 pp with double occupancy.

The settlement was town-incorporated in 1892 and city-incorporated in 1903. As a harbor port, St Petersburg started to grow in the early-20th-century when the downtown waterfront infrastructure was developed, and especially after 1908 when the shipping channel was dredged/deepened allowing access to larger vessels. The city's tourism industry developed in the 1920s-1930s, with seasonal tourists arriving (by cars, trains and yachts) from Canada and the North-Midwest USA.

St Petersburg was the principal Gulf Coast destination for trains serving the routes from Chicago, Cincinnati and New York. The 1924-opened Gandy Bridge (carrying highway 92) and the 1960-opened Howard Frankland Bridge (carrying highway I-275) both span Old Tampa Bay and directly connect St Petersburg to Tampa.

The city's current-day economy is largely based on industries like finances (Raymond James Financial, Fidelity National Information Services), healthcare (Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, St Anthony's Hospital, Bayfront Health), retail shopping (HSN, Publix Super Markets), electronics manufacturing (Jabil), communications, private and higher education, tourism (annual festivals, parades, museums, arts, sports).

What to do before or after your cruise from port tampa bay.

By Janet K. Keeler

Planning things to do before or after cruising from Port Tampa Bay is as fun to think about as the much-anticipated tropical cruise itself. The Tampa cruise port is conveniently located in a bustling area of Tampa, full of shops, attractions and restaurants, so the choices are plentiful.

The Tampa cruise port is one of the anchors of the Channelside District which puts cruisers within walking distance of a variety of things to do. And by variety, we mean good eats, too. The district is loaded with food options including Michelin-honored restaurants including Predalina and The Pearl .

Just a few blocks away from where you will embark at the Tampa cruise port is Sparkman Wharf , a tangle of restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and live music. Yeah, we know the cruise ships offer an endless buffet, but you’ll get some local flavors—charred octopus Greek salad at Swigamajig —at Sparkman plus the chance to blow off some calories on the Splitsville bowling lanes.

Amalie Arena , the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team, is within walking distance, too, and you might be able to sync your cruise with a game or even a concert. Madonna, Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Billy Joel and Megan Thee Stallion are just some of the acts that have played the venue recently.

For those who want to explore farther afield there are the beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches on the other side of Tampa Bay. Wide beaches with white sand are the hallmark from Clearwater south to Fort De Soto Park.

There’s plenty more beyond eating, drinking and sunning to discover before or after your cruise out of Port Tampa.

The Florida Aquarium Tampa has resources for accessible access.

Explore the Underwater World

In the shadow of the big cruise ships at the Tampa cruise port is the Florida Aquarium which offers as much intergenerational fun as can be found aboard any cruise ship. The aquarium is one of those educational places that masquerades as a good time. Who wouldn’t want to peer through the glass wall at what baby alligators do underwater? They hardly look like the giant prehistoric reptiles that they will become. The exhibits cover Florida’s wetlands, beaches and coral reef exhibits. Just the right place to get cruisers in the mood for their tropical sea adventure.

Los bailarines de flamenco entretienen a los invitados en el restaurante Columbia de Ybor City

Experience Latin Culture

A few miles from the Port Tampa Bay cruise port is the lively Tampa neighborhood, Ybor City and a street car from the cruise port area will get you there. In the early 1900s, Ybor was the country’s center of cigar production and the city’s Cuban immigrant heart. The cigar factories have dwindled to just one— J.C. Newman Cigar Co .— and visitors can watch the action and take a one-hour guided tour of the facility. There are a few storefronts along Ybor’s Seventh Avenue where you can watch cigar rollers. A self-guided GPS-based tour can tell you more and there are even guided night ghost walks. Stop in Florida’s oldest restaurant, the Columbia , for Cuban coffee and a 1905 salad, named after the year the doors opened.

Busch Gardens - Kumba

Ride a Roller Coaster

Tampa’s popular theme park, Busch Gardens , is less than 10 miles from the cruise port and is a great place to take the kids if you’ve got an extra day. There are 10(!) roller coasters for thrillseekers ranging from Iron Gwazi, the world’s fastest and highest hybrid coaster, to Cheetah Hunt, the park’s longest coaster.  Five of them turn riders upside down. There are other rides too, like the Serengeti Flyer which soars over one of the animal encampments. The Serengeti Express train ride covers similar ground but keeps you on the ground. Besides rides and attractions, there are animals, animals, animals. More than 200 species of animals including penguins, hippos, rhinos, giraffes and more. Lots of opportunities for interaction and education. Busch means beer and there’s a taproom too.

Ride the Pirate Water Taxi

Tampa is steeped in pirate culture thanks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team and the annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest in the weeks leading up to Easter. Think New Orleans Mardi Gras on the water with a pirate ship invasion and plenty of costumed rogues of the sea throwing beads in multiple parades. The Pirate Water Taxi takes its lead from the theme and plies the Hillsborough River and nearby channels much like a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. It makes 16 stops and No. 1 is at the Florida Aquarium, a quick walk from the Tampa Bay cruise port and parking. At stop #9, you can hop off and get a close up view of the docked Jose Gasparilla II pirate ship that leads the pirate fest invasion. Get off at  #12 and amble along the Tampa RiverWalk until you get to the Armature Works food hall to get locally brewed coffee or a bite to eat from one of the many vendors. Armature is stop No. 16 where you can board the water taxi again for the ride back to the cruise port.

Get Artsy across the Bay

Across Tampa Bay from Tampa, downtown St. Petersburg boasts five museums and a number of galleries, including one that houses the work of famed glass artist Dale Chiluly . It’s just across the street from the Morean Art Center which has rotating exhibits and a fine gift shop. The museums include the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg and its collection spanning 4,000 years; the Dali Museum which has an impressive collection of the Spanish surrealist’s master works; the James Museum of Western Art and its rotating and permanent collection of art that celebrates the American West; the Florida Holocaust Museum dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and promoting tolerance, and the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement and its impressive collection of furniture and decorative arts. There are parking facilities downtown, and an Uber or Lyft ride is one way to cross the bay. The Cross Bay Ferry to downtown St. Petersburg is another alternative and the pick up spot in Tampa is about a mile from the cruise port.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cruise Makes a Splash In Year 2

Jc allen | may 2, 2024.

tampa bay cruise port schedule

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It was smooth sailing on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ second annual Bucs Cruise presented by Cruise Planners and Celebrity Cruises. The ship set sail from Port Everglades on April 4th docking in Key West and the Bahamas before returning to Fort Lauderdale four days later. Over 600 Bucs fans descended on the cruise from across the U.S. filled with Buccaneer legends, current players, cheerleaders, and of course, Captain Fear.

Aboard the ship Silhouette, fans took in player panels, participated in games, and of course got to mingle one-on-one with some of their favorite players. That experience wasn’t just meaningful for the fans but also for the players themselves as Luke Goedeke notes.

“Being able to interact with them in an environment other than a football setting has been a phenomenal experience," Goedeke said. "Just being able to be myself around them and them seeing me more as a person instead of just a football player.”

The cruise boasted 13 players spanning the history of the Buccaneers franchise, featuring legends like Jimmie Giles, Dexter Jackson, and Warren Sapp to current Bucs like Rachaad White, Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Jamel Dean, Luke Goedeke, Christian Izien, Cade Otton, and Greg Gaines.

The voice of the Bucs, Gene Deckerhoff, was on board as well as Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford. It even featured a video message from Rob Gronkowski who teased his possible appearance on next year's cruise. Martin Gramatica was also on hand before the ship set sail signing autographs and taking pictures with fans.

tampa bay cruise port schedule

The cruise kicked off with a sailaway party on the top deck introducing the players that would be onboard. It featured a DJ and drinks flowing as fans got to interact with and receive autographs from some of their favorite players. Following the sailaway party was the first of four cocktail receptions that featured an intimate experience for fans to chat it up with players and get memorabilia signed.

The next morning featured a special breakfast with Bucs legend Derrick Brooks benefiting charity which allowed another opportunity for fans to meet the Hall of Fame linebacker. Throughout the day there were special guest presentations with Deckerhoff, Moore, Sapp, Ford, and Brooks himself as well as trivia and time to explore Key West.

“It’s been pretty cool! It’s a great deal for fans and for players," defensive tackle Greg Gaines said. "The Bahamas were sweet, the ship is sweet, everything is cool. It’s a lot of fun hanging out with fans and players and there's a lot of one-on-one time.”

The action didn’t stop or slow down on our day at sea, kicking off the day with two-player panels. The first of which featured legends from Buccaneers franchise history followed by current players. Both panels were hosted by Bucs team reporter Casey Phillips. In between the panels was a thrilling game of heads-up where a fan was paired with a player competing for the win. As fans were heading into the theatre some were randomly handed cards and were told to hold onto them. Coincidentally, I was handed one of those cards.

tampa bay cruise port schedule

I was paired up with Otton and we crushed the competition, going seven for seven in correct answers before the time ran out. But we weren’t the only ones to get every answer correct. Goedeke and his partner also finished with seven and a head-to-head competition was in order. While he was quick with the buzzer, Otton answered incorrectly, giving the win to Goedeke and his partner. It was a fun experience to be a part of and only set up the competitive nature for what was to come later in the day.

“It’s been awesome the fans have been super respectful, but also you can tell how much they support their team," Otton said.

It was time for a volleyball showdown, which ended up being Team Dean versus Team Tryon-Shoyinka. The competition was fierce and after a close game in the first round, Team Dean, consisting of White, Diaby, Goedke, and Sapp, put the finishing touches on Team Tryon-Shoyinka, who went Husky heavy in his draft. Team Dean went on to quickly defeat the captains and crew of the ship for the second straight year, with Diaby winning the MVP.

tampa bay cruise port schedule

That night there were more player presentations with Sapp and others, Bingo, and a family feud-style game that featured players versus cheerleaders. The final day of the cruise featured a free day to explore Nassau, Bahamas. I set out on an excursion to Pearl Island to swim with the pigs. Greg Gaines was with me, and I can say it was an experience for sure. Most of the other players spent their day in Atlantis while others enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Bahamas.

The final night of the cruise was celebrated with players and fans with the last two cocktail parties of the voyage. It was another opportunity for fans to mingle and meet their favorite players while receiving autographs and taking pictures. To say one final farewell, fans rocked out at a retro creamsicle party that featured a surprise appearance from Bucco Bruce himself.

tampa bay cruise port schedule

The Bucs Cruise is an opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime. Sailing with Buccaneers legends and players out on the open sea was a fantastic experience. One that I won’t soon forget.
