For KING + COUNTRY Unveil Cinematic 'What Are We Waiting For?' Video as They Announce Deluxe Album (Exclusive)

"It's this moment of, 'There's gotta be more to life,'" Luke Smallbone tells PEOPLE. "And who knows? Maybe you'll just find an oasis"

Grammy-winning brother duo for KING & COUNTRY was in Canada over Memorial Day weekend when their head of socials and creative pointed out the obvious. The Australian brothers — Joel and Luke Smallbone — were preparing to release the title track of their album "What Are We Waiting For?" and announce the deluxe edition of the project. The duo is defined by its adventurous, creative elements, including dramatic and cinematic music videos. They were weeks away from sharing new music with the world and had no music video.

"He said, 'Look, this is the culmination of the album,'" Joel recalled to PEOPLE. He and Luke were sitting in the front row of a small Nashville, Tennessee–area movie theater where they had planned a viewing party for the band and their families later in the night. "This is the title track. The whole album is built around a desert theme. A monologue in the liners reads about how you've been living in a no man's land. It's this whole allegory."

The crew member pointed out their team would be in California in less than two weeks and that they should stop in the Mojave Desert and bring the allegory to life.

for KING & COUNTRY made it happen. Joel started calling key team members, changing family plans and engaging their band. They got the video treatment locked in, the budget approved, and had a workable strategy within 72 hours.

"What Are We Waiting For?" the video was released Thursday. The men announced "What Are We Waiting For?+" will be available on Sept. 15. The deluxe 17-song album includes the duo's recent four consecutive No. 1 singles "TOGETHER (feat. Kirk Franklin & Tori Kelly )," "RELATE," "For God Is with Us" and "Love Me Like I Am," previously released duets "Love Me Like I Am (feat. Jordin Sparks )" and "For God Is with Us (feat. Hillary Scott )." In addition, there are two new originals — the title track and "Better Man," written by the Smallbones, Josh Kerr, and Tedd T.

"The statement of 'What are we waiting for' was meaningful to us because that's what we're asking ourselves," Luke told PEOPLE. "What are we waiting for in how we care for our wives, and what are we waiting for when it comes to raising our children? How are we caring for each other? You can't just keep saying to yourself, 'Well, maybe tomorrow. Maybe next week.' We should do it now."

The video opens with Joel pushing his hand through the desert sand. His body is buried beneath it, and he rises through the dirt as the song starts to play and then turns to grab his brother's hand and pull him to the surface.

"The sand is weighing you down," Joel explained.

Luke added that he hopes that coming out of the sand illustrates people breaking free of how they've always lived to discover there's more to life than they realize.

As the video progresses, a sandstorm erupts, and for KING & COUNTRY retrieve members of their band, also buried in the desert. Joel remembers a guy putting dust in their faces to make the sandstorm more realistic. The scene didn't happen while he was singing, so he was able to hide his face. His brother, however, got a mouthful of dirt.

"You sing along with the music videos," Luke told PEOPLE. "There was so much dust. I started laughing at one point. It goes right in your mouth, and you can't sing anymore."

However, he said the biggest complication was their middle-of-nowhere location, which made accessing the video shoot and getting needed props, equipment and supplies more complicated.

"What was really a testament to is that everyone showed up," Joel said. Their tour manager's daughter starred alongside one of Luke's sons in the video. "The band was completely game. It's just a testament to really working hard, I think, for all of us to build a culture where people are [willing]."

"The yeses from people meant a lot," Luke added.

A few minutes later, their band, crew and families filled the small theater to screen the video for the first time. Joel stood in front of them and jokingly explained that even if someone wanted to change something — it was too late. But they didn't. People hugged and cheered as they watched the clip — and then they watched it a second time.

"It's this moment of, 'There's gotta be more to life,'" Luke said, summarizing the video. "And you go through this storm, and you go through the night, and you get to the other side. And who knows? Maybe you'll just find an oasis."

Joey mcintyre’s catholic mom once called new kids on the block’s record company.

She made sure they did “ The Right Stuff .”

New Kids on the Block singer Joey McIntyre’s mom wanted to ensure that the world-famous boy band kept it clean and wholesome.

“My mother was a staunch Catholic. I mean, she actually called the record company [because] there was a little too much cleavage in one of our videos and was like, ‘Change that clip,'” McIntyre, 51, the youngest of the five band members, told The Post.

The New Kids on the Block, from left, Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre and Jonathan Knight

McIntyre, the youngest of nine children, is thankful his late mom was so religious.

“I mean, thank God, because I wouldn’t be here, right? I mean, birth control was not an option, so that’s why they had nine kids. They just kept going, God Bless them.”

The pop star and his fellow bandmates — Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight — released their eighth album “Still Kids” on Friday, their first in 11 years, and will embark on a 40-city concert tour this summer .

The group, which formed in 1984, disbanded in 1994, but reunited in 2008 because the timing was right, McIntyre said.

“You have to be patient. And I think a lot of people wanted us to get together for award shows or their TV show, all this stuff. And we knew we had something more special than that,” he said.

“And so when we were ready and we did do it, our fans were ready too.”

The guys enjoyed their fame in the ’80s and ’90s.

“I don’t think we were celibate, let’s put it that way. I mean, we were teenagers,” he said.

Even before the internet, girls were tracking them down.

“Oh, God, I mean, they were at our houses. It was crazy,” said McIntyre, who grew up in the suburbs of Boston.

Before the advent of social media, the boys had a hotline that fans, known as “Blockheads,” could call to hear pre-recorded messages from the group — unbeknownst to their parents.

“Now it’s famous for fans telling us all the time that they got grounded because their parents wouldn’t know and they’d find the phone bills and go, ‘What’s this $50 for?'” he said.

“ Pink was famously grounded for calling in to our number.”

In February, they created a free hotline — 1-806-NEW-KIDS — where callers now hear a message from Wahlberg from the set of his TV series “Blue Bloods.”

“And it’s free, so you can call all you want,” McIntyre said.

When McIntyre, who was the last member to join NKOTB, was recruited, he was 12 and doing community theater.

“Our manager, Mary Alford, at the time was just calling around public schools to see if there were any little white kids who could sing and dance. And there weren’t many of us,” he recalled.

McIntyre, who lived with his wife, Barrett Williams , a Lincoln Square native, and their three children on the Upper West Side from 2018 to 2020, before the family moved back to Los Angeles, recounted the band’s humble beginnings in the Big Apple.

“When the New Kids first were trying to make it, New York was everything and we would drive down, packed in one car and knock on doors and pound the pavement, like, literally,” he said.

“We would go into people’s offices and sing and that’s how we got to the Apollo Theater is literally, running into the guy who booked it.”

They didn’t have instant success, and had to wait until the 1988 release of their second album “Hangin’ Tough,” which became the nation’s second best-selling album the following year — to achieve superstardom.

joey mcintyre on broadway

“We didn’t make it for like three years. We were just hustling, trying to get gigs. Our first album flopped,” McIntyre said.

NKOTB went on to sell over 100 million albums worldwide, receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and become the first music group to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show .

After the group split, McIntyre launched a solo career and released multiple albums, starred in “Wicked” and “Waitress” on Broadway , and even competed on the first season of “Dancing with the Stars .”

Besides getting fawned over by female fans, McIntyre gets approached by men “all the time” — who want a photo to bring home to their wives or girlfriends.

“Probably more so than the fans themselves,” he said.

“They want to get credit — and do something, get a little bonus.”

KERRY KING: 'SLAYER Is Not Gonna Make Another Record' Or 'Tour Again'

During an appearance on the May 13 episode of SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" , SLAYER guitarist Kerry King was asked if he thinks the band's upcoming reunion shows will have a positive or negative impact on the promotional efforts for his debut solo album, "From Hell I Rise" , which will arrive on May 17 via Reigning Phoenix Music . He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "I see it both ways. We've [ SLAYER ] been turning down [reunion] offers for the last four years. Unfortunately, when the right offer came around, this one, it was right as my project was releasing. So there's certainly people, like my management and booking agents, who say, 'Oh, that's great. It's gonna boost your solo thing.' And I'm, like, 'Well, I don't know the business side of it, but it is what it is.' And every time I talk about it to journalists and magazines and stuff, I say, 'Listen, SLAYER is not gonna make another record. SLAYER is never gonna tour again.' May SLAYER do a one-off here or there? Maybe. I told my [solo] band when [the SLAYER reunion shows] came up, I'm, like, 'Listen, this is a blip on the radar to me. This isn't a solo project that's gonna recycle musicians every record cycle. You guys are with me till you don't wanna be.'"

Asked if he envisions SLAYER as the type of thing where the band will do one or two shows a year when a great opportunity comes up, Kerry said: "I'm not even talking yearly. I'm, like, every two years, every three years, every five years. I don't know. 'Cause I'm gonna be super busy with [my solo band] once 2025 rolls around."

On the topic of whether he has spoken to SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya since the band's reunion shows were announced, Kerry said: "I'll tell you the truth, 'cause you know that's how I roll. No, we haven't. But you know what's weird about that? It's not weird. [ Laughs ]"

He continued: "We'll go probably rehearse off and on for a couple weeks [before the first show], 'cause even though me and [ SLAYER drummer] Paul [ Bostaph , who is also in Kerry 's solo band] will be sharp from playing, playing with different people, you've gotta get sharp together."

Elaborating on his belief that SLAYER 's comeback shows will not lead into a full-fledged reunion for the legendary thrash metal act, Kerry said: "The way I look at it, and when I tell you this, it puts it into perspective for a lot of people, I see it as three five-year anniversary shows of our last tour."

King went on to say that he hasn't started thinking about which songs SLAYER might play at its upcoming shows. "I got asked for a setlist," he said. "I'm, like, 'Man, I haven't even got my setlist done yet.' [ Laughs ]"

Five years after SLAYER played the last concert of what was being billed as the band's farewell tour and just weeks after the SLAYER guitarist unveiled the details of his solo project, Kerry and his longtime bandmates announced that they will play at the Aftershock , Riot Fest and Louder Than Life festivals in September and October.

King previously addressed the SLAYER reunion while speaking to Revolver magazine about "From Hell I Rise" . Asked if he had known about these shows well before they were officially announced, King said: "If you ask promoters, they're going to have another answer. If you ask booking agents, they'll probably have a third answer. But to me, it kind of came out of nowhere. Have we been getting offers the past few years? Yeah, we turn down offers every year, probably every month of every year. These three festivals are right around the five-year anniversary of our last tour, which I thought was kind of cool. So, I thought this might be the right time to test the water. It will be great to play for the fans again."

Regarding whether the upcoming SLAYER shows will steal some of the thunder away from the touring his solo band will do in support of "From Hell I Rise" , Kerry said: "Well, time will tell, and my answer would be, 'hopefully not'. The funny thing is, it never occurred to me until the day the SLAYER announcement came, but [ Phil ] Demmel [guitarist in Kerry 's solo band] said, 'Dude, is this real?' And I'm, like, 'It's just a few weekends and that's it.' Of course, Paul knew. But I didn't tell Phil , I didn't tell Kyle [ Sanders , KERRY KING bassist] and didn't tell Mark [ Osegueda , KERRY KING singer] — and I said to the guys, 'There's no master plan here.' I didn't want anybody to start getting cold feet. I said, 'This is a little moment in time, and yeah, KERRY KING is going to be touring, you know, hopefully later in the year, as well. But SLAYER is an entity and I'm just a person.' But hopefully, we drive on with the solo project."

King also spoke about the SLAYER reunion in an interview with U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine. Admitting that the announcement of SLAYER 's comeback "was not my favorite timing", Kerry said that the SLAYER reunion "is not going to translate into recording and it's not going to translate into touring. For me, it's three shows marking five years since our final shows, a fun, 'Hey, remember us from before the pandemic?' celebration."

Kerry also explained in more detail why he still has not spoken to Tom since the news of SLAYER 's reunion was announced. "It's not like I'm angry with him or anything," King clarified. "We're very different people, and we evolved into business partners at the end of the day. He has very different interests from me, and very different outlooks. Does that make me hate him? No. But I don't need to talk to him every day… We just don't have much in common. When it comes time to rehearse, I'll have no problem showing up. We're professionals, and that's what we do."

When Kerry 's solo project was first announced, King told Rolling Stone that he was almost positive he and Tom would never resurrect the band. "I can pretty much a hundred percent say no because I have a new outlet, and it's not SLAYER , but it sounds like SLAYER ," King said of a potential SLAYER reunion.

The lineup for SLAYER 's comeback will be the same as the one which last toured in 2019: Araya and King , along with guitarist Gary Holt (also of EXODUS ) and longtime drummer Paul Bostaph .

Days after SLAYER 's reunion was announced, Tom Araya 's wife wrote on social media that she "harassed him for over a year" before he "agreed finally" to play more shows with the band. "We shared that news with SLAYER 's awesome managers and they did the rest!" she explained. "So yes without Tom it wouldn't have happened.. without me BUGGING HIM it wouldn't have happened."

Both Gary and his wife Lisa Holt were among the hundreds of people who "liked" Sandra 's Instagram post, with Lisa sharing three heart emojis in response to Sandra 's message.

In a statement confirming SLAYER 's return, Tom said: "Nothing compares to the 90 minutes when we're on stage playing live, sharing that intense energy with our fans, and to be honest, we have missed that." King added: "Have I missed playing live? Absolutely. SLAYER means a lot to our fans; they mean a lot to us. It will be five years since we have seen them."

The same day that SLAYER 's comeback was announced, Holt 's wife Lisa Holt took to her social media to write: "Yes, it's true..and an exciting adventure for the band and fans !

"To all the people saying 'they are liars' 'they must have ran out of money' 'its not SLAYER without so and so' ..I have an idea for you all...DON'T GO.. and for all the people who did go to the final tour dates and enjoyed it...awesome!!

"This isn't a 'TOUR' it's some dates..and GREAT NEWS!!!" she added. "And everyone that thinks they know all the inside info..you can't possibly know. so just enjoy the fact that this amazing band will play some amazing shows this year...go or don't..nobody cares!!!!!"

Three weeks before SLAYER 's reunion was announced, Kerry told Rolling Stone that he didn't foresee SLAYER coming back together for the foreseeable future.

"Will SLAYER tour again? I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. Could SLAYER play a show again? I'm sure there's a scenario," King said, adding that he hadn't spoken to Araya since that final show. "Am I looking for it? No, I'm just getting ready to start my [solo] career. So if that happens, it happens. But I'm going to be doing this for the next 10 years at least."

SLAYER played the final show of its farewell tour in November 2019 at the Forum in Los Angeles. One day later, Kerry 's wife Ayesha said that there is "not a chance in hell" that the thrash metal icons will reunite for more live appearances.

SLAYER 's final world tour began on May 10, 2018 with the band's intention to play as many places as possible, to make it easy for the fans to see one last SLAYER show and say goodbye. By the time the 18-month trek wrapped at the Forum, the band had completed seven tour legs plus a series of one-off major summer festivals, performing more than 140 shows in 30 countries and 40 U.S. states.

All material for "From Hell I Rise" was written by King , who was accompanied during the recording sessions by Bostaph , Demmel , Sanders and Osegueda . Helming the sessions at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles last year was producer Josh Wilbur , who has previously worked with KORN , LAMB OF GOD , AVENGED SEVENFOLD and BAD RELIGION , among others.

In Photos: The British Royal Family's Visits to Nigeria

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's trip to Nigeria is underway, look back on other royal visits by Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, and more.

the duke and duchess of sussex visit nigeria day 1

Nigeria is former British colony; the country gained independence in 1960, but remains a member of the Commonwealth , a voluntary association of 56 countries. Following Queen Elizabeth's death in 2022, King Charles succeeded his mother as head of the organization. "It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949," Queen Elizabeth said in 2018. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth visited Nigeria twice—in 1956, when Nigeria was still a colony, and 2003, for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Thus far, King Charles has yet to visit in his capacity as head of the Commonwealth. He previously visited in 1990 with his then-wife, Princess Diana , and again in 1999, 2006, and 2018.

In chronological order, here are the best photos of British royals in Nigeria:
