About Bletchley Park

Codebreaking at Bletchley Park first began in September 1938 when a small group of people, including members of MI6 and the Government Code and Cypher School (GC & CS) moved into the mansion. Over the course of the war its importance grew, and numerous huts were built. By 1944, around ten thousand people were working at Bletchley and its associated outstations.

Codebreaking Huts 3 and 6 have been carefully restored to resemble how the site looked during World War II, and include interactive exhibits, projected images and authentic set dressings. It was in these huts that Enigma messages were decrypted, translated and analyzed for vital intelligence.

Alan Turing, one of the most innovative thinkers of the 20th Century, oversaw and inspired the effort to decrypt cyphers generated by Nazi Germany’s Enigma machine at Bletchley. Turing’s story inspired the 2014 movie The Imitation Game .

The work at Bletchley also had a profound impact on computing, with the development of the world’s first electronic computer, the Colussus.

About The Tour

Bletchley Park, its mansion and outbuildings housed the code breakers who helped shorten WWII by two years. Churchill's 'geese that laid the golden eggs and never cackled' broke the army, navy and Luftwaffe codes and also the code for all communication between Hitler's bunker and his field commanders.

After decades of secrecy, ending only in 1974, and recent sensitive restoration, the Park offers a unique insight of the world of the code breakers and their machines. Walk in the footsteps of Alan Turing, father of the modern computer, and Ian Fleming who worked in the real James Bond world. Visit the huts where up to 12,000 people worked on deciphering the information gathered. See the working Bombe machines that helped crack the codes of the enigma machines that had 159 million million million different settings. See also the Colossus, the world's first programmable electronic computer; it fills a room.

This unforgettable and fascinating tour follows the step of the 2001 film Enigma and the more recent The Imitation Game starring superstar Benedict Cumberbatch.

Make it a full day adding Woburn Abbey, or Althorp, or Hatfield House (8-10 hrs) or ask us about visiting other WW2 sites.

A story of two people that changed the world

A baroque palace and the origins of todays tech..

This fascinating trip gives you an insight into the origins of modern-day computing and how vital information helped defeat Nazi Germany. Requisitioned for both World War one and two, Blenheim Palace played a roll hosting Britain's domestic secret service and evacuated boy school. Grand staterooms became dorms, and the landscaped ground became a playground.

Blenheim Palace, home to the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill , Aside from tales of military prowess and celebrated national heroes, Blenheim Palace, is an extraordinary and arguably unparalleled example of the elegance, beauty, and splendour of the British aristocracy. With its  187 rooms  that glitter in the sumptuous golds and distinctive theatre of the baroque style, Blenheim, the real Downton Abbey. The tour of the  Lancelot "Capability" Brown  landscaped grounds is a highlight of a visit to Blenheim.

A question for you, how is a Victorian mansion in Buckinghamshire, England connected to the multinational technology company, Apple Inc? Answer the logo. We all know the logo, an apple with its bite missing from it. This image is a tribute to the genius mathematician and the 'father of the modern computer', Alan Turing ; a famous resident of Bletchley Park during the second world war. When you meet with your guide, they will reveal the significance of Apple Inc's brand, and explore the once top-secret HQ for Britain's best codebreakers.

Discover how the Nazi code breaking work carried out by Alan Turing and his team shortened the war from two to four years and saved over 14 million lives. Don't forget to ask your guide what the apple logo symbolises.

Battle of Britain

Your journey will commence from the heart of London or any location of your preference, setting the stage for an immersive experience in history.

Furthermore, discover how this very bunker served as the nerve centre for Fighter Command No11 operations group throughout World War II. It’s where the fate of the nation hung in the balance as crucial decisions were made during the tumultuous days of 1940. Thanks to the tireless dedication of RAF plotters and controllers, the Royal Air Force’s fighter pilots held the line against the relentless onslaught of the Luftwaffe. Battle of Britain tours allow you to step back in time and relive this extraordinary historical episode. Descending 60 feet underground through 76 steps, you’ll reach the Operations Room. Here, you’ll encounter the plotting room, with its meticulously preserved large map table, squadron display boards, balloon movements, and weather conditions, exactly as they were when Winston Churchill visited on September 15, 1940. Churchill himself coined the iconic phrase “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few,” after one of his visits to this very bunker in August 1940.

We embark on a journey northward from London. Bletchley Park stands as a place of profound historical significance, serving as the nerve centre for British Codebreakers during WWII. Initially established as a clandestine outpost with the collaboration of MI6 and leading academics from British universities, Bletchley Park sought refuge 50 miles away from the constant threat of bombings in London. In 1941, Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued a resounding directive: “make sure they have all they want extreme priority and report to me as soon as this has been done.” Consequently, Bletchley Park experienced a substantial influx of resources and the initiation of massive building projects to accommodate its expanding workforce. The Government’s Code and Cypher school devised ingenious methods that allowed the Allied forces to decode military ciphers from German, Japanese, and other Axis nations. This yielded critical intelligence that supported Allied military operations across land, sea, and air. Bletchley Park also marked the dawn of information technology, with code-breaking processes propelled by ground-breaking machines such as the Turing/Welshmen, Bombe, and the pioneering electronic computer, Colossus. Today, Bletchley Park enjoys recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Sitededicated to preserving the remarkable saga of these WWII codebreakers. As you explore at your own pace, you’ll uncover the stories of mathematicians and crossword enthusiasts who transformed into some of the world’s foremost codebreakers in the intelligence warfare of WWII. Concluding your enriching visit to Bletchley Park, your knowledgeable chauffeur guide will ensure your safe return to your chosen London drop-off location. The comprehensive package covers your expert tour guide, transportation in a comfortable vehicle, fuel, insurance, entrance fees for your guide if they accompany you, and parking costs. Not included in the price are meals, refreshments (excluding our complimentary water), accommodation, or admission fees to attractions. Don’t miss this opportunity to embark on a truly immersive Battle of Britain tour and delve into the secrets of Bletchley Park. Discover when was the Battle of Britain and what it meant for the world. Read more about Bletchley Park at Wikipedia.

Bletchley Park Mansion from London Country Tours

Two of Britain’s iconic locations can be combined into a fantastic day tour from London through Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.

Bletchley Park

During World War II, Bletchley Park was home to Britain’s codebreakers, including Alan Turing, and played a unique and major role in producing intelligence that affected the outcome of the war. The site now offers visitors the chance to see where the code breakers lived and worked, the Library and wartime garages complete with WWII vehicles.

Featured in films and TV programmes, including the Oscar nominated film ‘The Imitation Game’ – Bletchley Park currently has an exhibition about the making of that film featuring costumes worn by the stars and behind the scenes gems (exhibitions may change). A fascinating look into a once-secret world.

Woburn Abbey

The stunning Woburn Abbey and Gardens have evolved from the original 12th Century Abbey. With Royal connections through the ages, the Abbey is now the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford.

Today the Abbey offers visitors chance to explore 22 rooms housing over 250 works of art, as well as antique furniture, porcelain and other treasures. St Mary’s Woburn (pictured) is a local parish church built by the 8th Duke.

The Abbey is set in a beautiful parkland garden – landscaped areas include an original walled Kitchen Garden, as well as a maze, Camellia house conservatory and many other follies and features. A 3,000 acre deer park with 9 species of deer provides many public footpaths to enjoy.

Lady’s Guide to a Day Trip to Bletchley Park from London

Today I want to bring you my guide to taking a day trip to Bletchley Park from London. This English country house in Milton Keynes was the top-secret home of Britain’s World War II codebreakers, and it’s considered the birthplace of modern computing. Spending a day here will allow you to learn about Allied intelligence and unsung heroes like Alan Turing.

Day Trip to Bletchley Park

Day Trip to Bletchley Park

Bletchley Park is located just north of London. It started life in the the 1870s as a family home surrounded by peaceful grounds. It has good road and rail links, and it’s situated between the academic centers of Oxford and Cambridge .

For these reasons, it was chosen to house British codebreaking operations in the Second World War. Historians estimate that the codebreakers’ efforts shortened the fighting by up to 2 years and saved thousands of lives.

Today Bletchley Park is a museum and heritage attraction. Visitors come from all over the world to see the offices where the codebreakers worked and learn about the methods and machines they devised to intercept encrypted enemy communications.

How to Get to Bletchley Park from London

If you’re wondering how to get to Bletchley Park from London, you can easily reach it by train. Bletchley station is so close to the UK capital you can even make it a half-day trip from London if you want to.

Bletchley is a 35-minute train ride from London’s Euston station, and services run direct. Make sure to book tickets in advance to get the best prices, and check timetables so you can catch a fast service that doesn’t stop at every station on the way.

Once you reach Bletchley, it’s less than a 5-minute walk along Sherwood Drive to reach the entrance of Bletchley Park. There’s good signage en route, so you should have no problem finding it.

Bletchley train station sign

Bletchley Park Tickets

Another nice thing about taking a day trip to Bletchley Park from London is that there’s no need to pre-book tickets in advance. You can just show up and buy them at the front desk when you arrive (you can also book them online ahead of time).

I’ve purchased my ticket on arrival, and now I’m excited to delve into this secret world of cryptography and codebreaking.

Bletchley Park Tour

After buying my entry ticket, I pick up an audioguide and start my self-guided tour of Bletchley Park (there are 1-hour guided tours you can book at the Information Desk, too).

Bletchley Park visitor center exhibition

Following the map I received at the ticket desk, I start my tour in the visitor center in Block C. There’s a permanent exhibition here with a broad overview of Bletchley Park and the codebreaking work that went on here during World War II.

Afterwards I venture out into the grounds. The buildings here are close together, and the whole place is centered around a small lake.

The Mansion

I walk up to the mansion, which was the original Victorian country house on the property. Inside I discover rooms full of exhibitions on topics like the early days of Bletchley Park and the stories of the veterans who worked here during the war.

Bletchley Park Mansion interior

I also see Commander Denniston’s Office (he was in charge here in the early years) and the library. Both have been recreated to look the way they were in the 1940s.

Chauffeur’s Hut, Garages, and Stableyard

From the mansion I make my way to the Chauffeur’s Hut and the Garages. There’s information in both places about the drivers and messengers who worked here during the war.

The Garages are full of vintage cars from the era, including one that featured in the 2001 movie Enigma starring Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott. It’s one of many films about this place, including The Imitation Game .

Vintage Ambulance

From the Garages I walk into the Stableyard, a collection of picturesque cottages and buildings where the first codebreakers at Bletchley Park broke into the German military Enigma cipher machines.

Once I’ve explored the Stableyard, I head over to a collection of outbuildings called huts. They were used as offices during World War II, and they’re full of everything from exhibitions to re-created workspaces.

I start at Huts 11 and 11A, which contain detailed information about the Bombe machines that were developed by Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman.

Bombe exhibition

The Bombes were critical in the success of Bletchley Park’s operations, as they sped up the daily search for Enigma cipher keys.

From there I head to Huts 3 and 6. They’re restored World War II codebreaking and intelligence huts, and the series of small rooms inside contains exhibitions and information about the work that was done here.

The last hut I visit is Hut 8. It was the German naval Enigma codebreaking building, and it contains Alan Turing’s recreated office.

Alan Turing office

Buildings, Blocks, and Museums

My next stop is the Teleprinter Building, where I watch an immersive film that gives an overview of Bletchley Park’s role in the planning of the D-Day invasion on June 6th, 1944. It’s interesting to hear the famous story from an intelligence perspective.

After sitting down to watch the film, I walk over to Block A. It’s called The Intelligence Factory, and it’s lined with small rooms full of information and interviews about how Bletchley Park operated on a large scale with a workforce of 9,000 people.

I particularly enjoy learning about the work of the women who were here during the war. Around 7,500 women worked in Bletchley Park, and they constituted roughly 75% of the workforce.

Paperwork at Bletchley Park

Learning about their roles and how they felt about the work they did is fascinating. Secrecy was paramount, and many of them had little idea of the impact of their jobs until after the war.

Leaving Block A, I enter Block B. There’s a museum here with a lot of information about Alan Turing, the development of GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), and the German Lorenz ciphers.

My last stop is the National Radio Centre (NRC). This small museum houses exhibits that present the history of radio communication from its inception into the future.

When I’m finished seeing it, I walk back to the visitor center in Block C and return my audioguide. I pass the gift shop and cafe as I exit, then make my way back to the train station (if I wanted to, I could visit The National Museum of Computing down the street).

Bletchley Park building

How Much Time To Spend at Bletchley Park

In all, I’ve spent 5 hours here (the map I received at the entrance says most visitors spend 4-5 hours). I could have spent much longer, though, and I wish I’d paced myself better or left myself more time at Bletchley Park.

There’s a HUGE amount of information here, and every building could take ages to see if one read each sign, plaque, and board in detail.

Thankfully, tickets are good for a year. I might just have to take another day trip to Bletchley Park to dig deeper into the world of codebreaking, ciphers, and World War II history.

Bletchley Park Stableyard

Bletchley Park Day Trip from London

When I reach the station I board a train to London, watching the countryside scenery slowly build back up into an urban landscape as I go.

I’ve enjoyed my Bletchley Park day trip from London, and I still can’t believe how much there is to see, learn, and be amazed by here. Now that I know how easy it is to visit this place , I’m sure I’ll be back soon. I hope you get a chance to do the same.

Featured in films and TV programmes, including the Oscar nominated film 'The Imitation Game', Bletchley Park has much to offer the whole family. Different exhibitions within the complex will appeal to all tastes with hands-on displays and interactives.

If there's time you have the option to look around the National Museum of Computing, which is dedicated to collecting and restoring historic computer systems, and the National Radio Centre, where you can learn about the basic principles of radio and discover the history of radio communication.

Aerial view of King's College Chapel.

Cambridge is a university city located on the River Cam. The university dates back to 1209 and colleges of note include Trinity College, founded by King Henry VIII and King's College with its Gothic chapel. Incidentally this is where Bletchley's Alan Turin graduated so there's a strong theme to this tour. We'll drive you around the city so you can marvel at the splendid architecture and maybe even time to stop off to watch the fellows punting along the river.

All Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about visiting bletchley park, booking & ticketing.

When are you open?

Our summer opening hours (1 March – 31 October) are 9.30 – 17.00 (last entry at 15.00). Winter opening hours (1 November – 28 February) are 9.30 – 16.00 (last entry at 14.00).

Do I have to book to visit Bletchley Park, or can I just turn up on the day?

You don’t have to book, although we encourage people to do so. We will always have tickets available on the day if you want to just turn up.

How do I book?

Head to our bookings page to select your date, your timed entry slot and your ticket type.

How far in advance can I book my visit?

You can book your visit up to twelve months in advance.

What if I need to / want to change my arrival time? What if I am running early or late?

We completely understand that these things happen and your circumstances change. You might unavoidably need to come at a different time due to traffic, a fuel crisis or sickness in the family. Please don’t worry, we are very flexible! There’s no need to contact us – we will sort it all out quickly and effortlessly on your arrival. We look forward to seeing you.

When is your last entry? If I book an afternoon timed entry slot, will I only have limited time to explore the site?

Our timed entry slots help us manage flow on site and stagger entry. They do not limit your time on site. Our last timed entry slot is currently from 14.00, which will still give you two hours to explore the site – perfect for an afternoon out. Our Annual Pass gives you unlimited free returns for a year.

What should I do when I arrive?

When you book, you will receive a booking confirmation email. Please bring this email with you when you arrive, either on a mobile device or as a print-out, plus any ID required for concessions and Friends. We want to keep queuing to a minimum so if you can have these ready when you arrive in Admissions, we’d be grateful. Please try and arrive for your timed entry slot. This doesn’t limit your time on site; it just allows us to stagger entry so we can manage visitor flow.

Do I have to pay extra for an Annual Pass?

No! Your ticket for admission automatically allows you to return unlimited within a year of your first visit date. This means that you can visit again and again (some exceptions may apply, please check your ticket details).

If I have an Annual Pass or a Friend Membership, do I need to book?

You don’t have to book in advance. However, we do encourage repeat visitors to book their visit in advance via our bookings page . This page includes Annual Pass holders and Friends Membership choices.

Do I need to pay extra if I am a Friend or have an existing valid Annual Pass?

No, you don’t need to pay anything extra. Just select a date and a timed entry slot to book your visit and then bring your Friends’ membership card and a form of ID with you, or your Annual Pass.

How do I cancel my visit if I can no longer make it?

Let us know as soon as possible, if you can no longer visit, by emailing [email protected] or calling 01908 272673.

How do I book a ticket if I am a carer?

Carers or companions of disabled visitors access the site free of charge. As a carer, when you book, please select the ‘Access companion’ option from the ticket types available (a free option) and ensure you are booked into the same timed entry slot as the person for whom you are caring, and arrive together at Admissions. Please take a look at our Admission prices page for further details of all ticket types.
