Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Electric Bike Review

Trek’s hub motor electric bike with a torque sensor.

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger is Trek’s first electric bike with a hub drive motor and torque sensor. This is a lightweight electric bike looking towards the entry level rider. The Dual Sport+ 2 is built out with a nice component spec and ready to ride home, right out of a Trek store.

trek dual sport eq

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger is a class 1 electric bike with pedal assist up to 20mph. It has a 250 watt hour battery internally mounted in the frame. This powers the 250 watt hour rear hub motor that has 40nm of torque. There is a torque sensor to activate the motor. A torque sensor measures how hard the rider is pedaling to determine how much electric power to push to the bike. The harder you pedal, the more power it gives to the motor.

It has a Shimano 9 speed drive train and uses Hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors for strong and effective stopping power. The controller is a simple three button layout with LED indicators to tell you what mode you are in. There are three pedal assist modes you can choose from which can be custom tuned by a Trek Dealer. There is an integrated headlight and tail light that turn on with the bike. The wheels are 27.5” wheels with 2” tires mounted on them and there are mounting points for a rear rack as well.

The size medium weighs 38.1 pounds and has up to 35 miles of range. You also have the option to use an 250Wh range extender you can purchase separately. This step through model of the Dual Sport plus 2 costs $2,399.

There are a lot of things we liked about the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger . When we first picked it up and loaded it into the car we noticed that it was light in weight. Coming in under 40lbs it made loading it into the car nice and easy.

The Dual Sport+ 1 also has a sleek look with the battery integrated seamlessly into the frame. It looks like an analog bike at first glance, you don’t see any of the rear hub motor since it is hidden behind the large rear cassette. The motor is also nearly silent, when pedaling in the lowest settings you hear no motor noise, and barely any in the highest setting. The 9 speed Shimano drive train pairs well for this bike, giving you a good range of gears throughout the 9 speeds.

The torque sensor which activates the motor assist on this bike is very smooth and gives a very natural bike ride feel to it. Having the torque sensor, that measures the pressure you are applying to each pedal stroke, versus a cadence sensor, which just senses pedal movement, makes this feel a lot more like an analog bike would feel just with some extra boost. The harder you pedal, the more assist you get, so you get a nice workout as well.

The wheel and tire spec make this comfortable on rough roads and can handle a gravel road or trail with ease. The Stagger edition is also very convenient when having to get on or off the bike as well as at stops, There is still a cross bar which helps with the stiffness of the bike, but it does not get in the way when stepping forward.

Having a support system from a brand like Trek that has many physical shops is also very beneficial. We had an issue with the lights when we first got it so we called a Trek shop in the area and they told us to bring the bike in and they were able to troubleshoot the problem and get it taken care of right away. Having in person help with from a shop makes a big difference in the overall experience of owning a bike. The shop can also custom tune your pedal assist levels to your liking, they mentioned many people turn down their first pedal assist for maximum range, 2 for normal cruising and then turn up pedal assist 3 for maximum hill climbing power.

trek dual sport eq

There are just a few things on the Dual Spot +  2 stagger plus that we would have liked to see on it. . One of the things is that it does not have a display screen to show you speed/battery percentage/range. There is a thumb controller with LED lights to indicate battery levels and pedal assist mode, but it is nice to be able to see your speed/range on an actual screen.

It’s nice that there is an option for a range extender to double the battery capacity, but this will take up the water bottle cage mount and then you will not have a place to mount a water bottle. It would be nice to have a place for a bottle if you are doubling the distance you can pedal.  It does not come with fenders so you will have to get some aftermarket ones if you live in a wetter climate.

The Trek dual sport + 2 is great for someone who is looking to get a nicely priced electric bike for their commute to work,or just leisurely rides around town. Add a rear rack to it and it would be a great grocery getter. Adding the torque sensor to this rear hub motor bike keeps the price point down compared to a mid drive electric bike and gives it a really nice natural pedal assist feel and you’ll get a bit of a work out doing so.

I agree a small lady screen be nice to tell speed & mileage.

' src=

Is there a rider weight limit?

' src=

There is a combined weight of bicycle, rider and cargo limit of 300 pounds for this bike.

' src=

While I can see this technology as advancing cycling, it’s too damn expensive. But, consumers has been convinced to believe that they need it. Pedal on America, pedal on.

' src=

“Analog bike” is a silly term. No bicycle is an analogy of anything. “Manual”, “unassisted”, or “conventional” are all better terms for non-motorized bicycles.

' src=

Ha, thanks. I guess we get lost in guitar world a bit too much.

' src=

There is a free trek app which shows speed, range, has GPS with bike trail defaults, etc. Works well. The bike also has a walking assist feature so it’ll creep along when you want to walk with it.

' src=

I have a Garmin 1030 GPS device that I use on all my bikes, it gives lots of info including speed, distance, grade, etc. It can be mounted on the handle bar or using a stem mount from Amazon for ~ 15 bucks.

Good info! Thanks for sharing, not everyone has a computer like that, but yes, you definitely could get a computer for a bike without one.

' src=

Is there a way to increase my speed? A friend of mine has chipped his cube and is much faster now

' src=

I agree with Michael A, it is pricey. And, its capabilities are wildly overstated. I just purchased a Dual Sport + 2, have put 300+ miles on it and I’m sorry I bought it. Its Achilles heel is actually its main feature, i.e., the electric motor. Peddle Assist level 1 works, on average, of 20 minutes before the motor shuts down and the handlebar mounted controller (HMI) goes into error mode (3 flashing red lights). In level 2, it shuts down after about 10 minutes and in level, about 3 minutes or less. I live in a hilly area and my rides are punctuated with this motor giving up and leaving me on the side of the road waiting for the motor to reset. I contacted both Trek and Hyena (who makes the motor, controller and battery) and they seemed clueless as to why the motor stopped working (and they’re supposed to be the experts). A rep at Trek actually said, “I’m guessing that you’re peddling too hard.” After numerous back and forth email exchanges, both Trek and Hyena threw in the towel and directed me back to the dealer who sold it to me. After a long discussion with the dealer, they commented that the Trek Dual Sport + 2 with its 250 watt battery and 40nm motor isn’t capable of tackling hills and is only suitable for errands around town on flat or mildly elevated terrain. So, much like EV passenger vehicles whose range is inflated to increase sales, this Trek Dual Sport + 2’s capability is also exaggerated by its manufacturer and also by those being paid to write glowing articles on its performance.

' src=

I use your dual sport +2 primarily on the American River Trail (Historic Folsom to Discovery Park, Sacramento). It makes the 26 mile trip with battery power remaining. I installed a dropper seat post so that I could lower the seat as I came to a stop and put my feet on the ground. The control cable fits inside the frame tubes, but is a tight fit and takes time and patience to do. The gearing is too high for me, so I installed a 32 teeth chain ring. The rigid front fork really takes a hit when rolling over the tree roots which make “speed bumps” on the asphalt, so I installed a Rockshox ParagonSL suspension fork (100mm travel). I had to use a steerer tube extender in order to attach the handlebar stem. The suspension fork raised the front end up too high, so I installed a 24 inch front wheel. The bike is finally “perfect” for me. I smile a lot when riding the bike, At age 90 I am greatful for every day I am alive.

' src=

Well done Russ, Sounds like you have created the ideal commuter for you. Cycling has been a saviour for my fitness and longevity also – very blessed to have got into cycling when I was young, and now have chalked up 50 years of riding and still love it. All the best of health and happiness to you.

' src=

The torque sensor can adapt to your pedaling effort, providing just the right amount of electric assistance, making your ride smoother and more enjoyable. It’s a smart technology that enhances the synergy between the rider and the motor, ensuring a more natural and intuitive feel.

Trek Dual Sport Review

Unlike other bikes from Trek, the Dual Sport does not seen a lot of change from year to year. It’s a bike that is great at nothing, but good at everything, which makes it a great bike for mixed terrain trail riders. In this Trek Dual Sport review we’ll compare the Dual Sport to Trek’s FX and Verve hybrid bikes. We also compare specs across all 2022 Dual Sport bikes in the lineup.

The Trek Dual Sport is a hybrid bike. It comes with 40mm gravel tires, but is capable of holding a 2.1″ mountain bike tire. However, don’t get any ideas that the Dual Sport is capable of hitting mountain bike trails, because it’s not. The front fork is limited to a maximum of 63mm of travel. A hardtail bike with such limited travel will not be comfortable on chunky trails, placing it firmly in the hybrid bike category.

Trek Dual Sport 1 vs 2 vs 3

There are only three bikes in the Dual Sport lineup for 2022. In recent years Trek has offered a Dual Sport 4, but with the changes made to the drivetrain from the 3 down, there was no longer a need for a 4 this year. This is the first year the Dual Sport has had a genuine overhaul, and the changes are for the better overall.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 Review ($689 USD)

The main components to look for on a bike are the groupset, drivetrain and fork if the bike has suspension. The groupset determines how reliable and accurate your shifting will be, and if the chain remains tensioned while riding on rough terrain.

Groupset : The 2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 comes with an entry level groupset from Shimano that includes an Altus derailleur in the rear and Tourney up front. There is no clutch to keep tension on the chain, which means when the trail gets rough expect the chain to slip. This problem is easily resolved with a $14 chain guide/tensioner like this universal one on Amazon .

Drivetrain : The drivetrain gives you plenty of range for climbing hills, as well as low end gearing to go fast. With bikes moving to simpler drivetrains, it’s not surprising to see the 2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 make the change to a 2×8 drivetrain from a 3x in 2021 and older models. There is so much crossover on a 3x setup that you aren’t getting a true 24 speed bike. With the move to 2x there is less chance for crossing the chain and less duplicate gearing.

Fork : The front fork suspension is the weak point on the Dual Sport 1. It is equipped with the SR Suntour NEX fork. The fork features 63mm of travel and a 100x5mm quick release.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 2 Review ($789 USD)

Groupset : The 2022 Trek Dual Sport 2 gets a slight upgrade from the 1 when it comes to the groupset. The front and rear derailleur are Acera and Altus, respectively. You still don’t get the benefit of a clutch, which means a chain guide/tensioner is a must have upgrade. It is amazing how this part part costing less than $15 can eliminate your chain jumping gears and slipping, but the bike doesn’t come with one from the factory.

Drivetrain : You get more range making the upgrade from 1 to 2. The Dual Sport 2 drivetrain is 2×9 with an 11-36T cassette. The additional range will help cyclists living in extremely hilly or mountainous areas.

Fork : The fork on the 2022 Dual Sport 2 gets a hydraulic lockout added to the same SR Suntour NEX that comes on the one. Lockouts on front forks are usually worth the upgrade, but don’t expect a lot of life out of this one. After owning four bikes that have the SR Suntour NEX with lockout, I’ll never buy another. All four of the forks broke after six months of use. The lockout either stays locked and your fork is useless, or it breaks and doesn’t lock anything out.

Don’t expect your warranty to make the claim process easy. Your local bike shop cannot fix everything. In other words, you are forced to work directly with SR Suntour. My experiences with them have been awful unless you’re a full time bike mechanic that speaks in part numbers.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 3 Review ($979 USD)

It’s rare for the best value bike to also be the top of the line bike, for any model. That’s the case with the 2022 Dual Sport 3.

Groupset : The biggest upgrade to any bike in the lineup is the groupset on the 2022 Trek Dual Sport 3. It comes with Shimano Deore, and it includes a built-in clutch. That means your chain stays in place while pedaling over rough terrain. The reliability and accuracy on any groupset improves when it has a clutch.

Drivetrain : Another great find during this Trek Dual Sport review is the 1×10 drivetrain included on the DS 3. With 1x drivetrain you are getting easy and simple shifting so your focus can stay on the trail. The 11-46T cassette offers plenty of high and low end range, too.

Fork : An upgrade to the front fork puts this bike’s price tag over $1,000, so it’s an understandable move neglecting it. The 2021 Dual Sport 4, retired in 2021, came with a shifter lockout. It would have been nice to add that to the 2022 Dual Sport 3, especially since it’s still an SR Suntour NEX known to have problems.

Dual Sport vs FX vs Verve

Comparing the three most popular hybrid bike models from the largest bike manufacturer in the world is inevitable. Before diving too deep, these three bikes (Dual Sport, FX and Verve) may all be hybrid bikes, but they were all designed for completely different types of usage.

I love riding a bike designed for a specific usage. For example, I ride my road bike in the road, ride my gravel bike if there’s gravel, and my mountain bike on the trails. If I am riding just to get some exercise, I ride my FX 3. (Read: Trek FX 3 Review ).

The Dual Sport is not a bike I would ever choose to ride when compared to my other bikes. My gravel bike will be faster than the Dual Sport on gravel trails, and my mountain bike more capable on rough trails. A commuter will choose the Verve over the Dual Sport because the riding posture is more upright to better see traffic.

Overall, the 2022 Trek Dual Sport is an excellent bike for cyclists that do a lot of mixed trail rides. It’s a great bike to explore a new trail on because no matter what you come across, its capable of handling it. It’s great at nothing, but really good at everything. The

The law, introduced in 2014, puts the emphasis on the producers and suppliers of electrical equipment to pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electricals.

As a retailer that sells new Electrical and Electronic products we will take back old items, provided it is a like-for-like replacement when you buy a new product from us. We will then responsibly dispose of the old product ensuring that it doesn’t end up in landfill.

Old products must be returned directly to our shop or head office (details below) within 28 days of your new purchase, clearly marked as WEEE. Cycle Solutions Head Office 6 Europa way Fforestfach Swansea SA5 4AJ

Disposing of equipment yourself

If you choose not to send your equipment back to us for disposal then you can dispose of any electricals or electronics yourself at your local recycling centre, who will dispose of your equipment via a controlled recycling process.

You can locate your closest collection site by entering your postcode at www.recycle-more.co.uk

What products fall under WEEE Regulations?

As part of the WEEE regulations, all electrical and electronic goods produced after August 2005 that fall under WEEE regulations should be clearly marked with a crossed-out bin symbol which means they should not be included with household waste so that they can be recycled

As a responsible retailer we take all steps possible to ensure that our business meets all requirements of any EU & UK consumer protection laws, particularly the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation & Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and other legislation specific to the products that we sell.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding this process, please contact us at [email protected] .

Bratsk city, Russia

The city of Irkutsk oblast .

Bratsk - Overview

Bratsk is a city in Russia located in the north-west of the Irkutsk region, in the center of Angarsky mountain-ridge. It stands on the shores of the Bratsk and Ust-Ilim reservoirs formed on the Angara River.

Today, this city, formed in 1956 due to the construction of Bratsk hydro power station, is an agglomeration of dispersed residential areas separated by forests and water areas. Residential areas, different in size, are former settlements constructed near industrial enterprises.

The population of Bratsk is about 222,500 (2022), the area - 428 sq. km.

The phone code - +7 3953, the postal codes - 665700-665783.

History of bratsk.

In 1631, a group of 40 Cossacks headed by Panteley Demidov Penda founded a small fortress on the Angara River, in the mouth of the Oka River, and called it Bratsky ostrog. The name is derived by assimilating “Buryaty” (local native people) into “braty”, that is “bratya” (brothers).

When the fortress lost its military importance, the settlement received the name Bratsko-Ostrozhnoye, sometimes simply Bratskoye, later Bratsk.

The present city was formed due to the construction of Bratsk power station, to the north of the old settlement of Bratsk which was flooded by waters of the reservoir.

On July 15, 1955, the construction of Bratsk hydro power station and the city of Bratsk was announced as an All-Union construction. On July 26, 1961, the reservoir began to be filled with water. September 1, 1961, is considered the date of the Bratsk Sea coming into being.

Bratsk - Features

The city was formed from several settlements. Today, it consists of several districts located pretty far away from each other. The residential districts were built around preserved taiga forests. The length of the city along the shore of the reservoir is about 65 km. The distance to Irkutsk is 983 km by railway, and 618 km by highway.

The climate is continental with long severe winter (up to minus 35-40 degrees Celsius) and short hot summers (up to plus 25-30 degrees C). The heating season lasts 246 days. The average temperature in January is 22.7 degrees C below zero, in July - plus 18-19 degrees C. Despite the harsh climate, Bratsk economic and geographical location is quite favorable.

Bratsk plays a role of an important support base in the development of the northern regions of Eastern Siberia and the Far East. The city is located at the intersection of important communications connecting the European and Asian continents with the north of Eastern Siberia and Yakutia. This is the basis for its economic, social and cultural development.

Bratsk is one of the largest industrial centers in the region and Eastern Siberia: metallurgy; pulp, timber mass and carton producing; timber processing and wood working; chemical and food industries. It has access to electricity generated by Bratsk power station, unlimited water resources, navigable and timber-rafting ways, etc. Also, private gold miners working on the Angara tributaries and pearl divers (the Oka River) play significant role in the local economy.

Bratsk airport offers flights to Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Moscow, Tyumen, Yakutsk. The city is connected by railway lines with central Russia, Siberia, Yakutia, Transbaikalia, the Far East.

One of the essential problems of present Bratsk is an adverse environment. The main sources of pollution are the enterprises of ferrous metallurgy, timber processing, energy, transport.

60 km east of Bratsk, there is a climatic resort “Bratsk seaside” located on the coast of the Bratsk reservoir. Patients with diseases of the circulatory and nervous systems are treated there.

Museums of Bratsk
