Adult Dance Hula Hoop

Dance Hoop Information

  • Hoops are made from Polyethylene tubing (black stuff typical to hardware stores)
  • Tubing is 100 PSI
  • All hoops detach and coil down to a smaller size for travel
  • Hoops are wrapped with decorative metallic tape and grippy gaffer tape

The lightest hoops in our fitness line (about 1 lb) are made from 100 psi polyethylene tubing. Our dance fitness hoops are great for the smaller sized beginner or an experienced hooper transitioning to another size.

The dance style is the Goldilocks choice of hoops: Not very heavy, not very light. It sits in a weight range that makes both dance and fitness programs accessible with the same hoop. A continuous wrap of grip tape helps with control, and the larger diameter options allow the practitioner to use slower body movements than the smaller polypro dance style hoops.

This Style is Great for:

Beginner Hoopers   with smaller body types or previous dance experience

The experienced hooper wanting to transition between a heavier fitness hoop and a polypro

An off body and trick style hooper wanting to add more core work into their physical practice.

Beginners with physical conditions such as osteoporosis or other conditions that lead to weakened bones or easy bruising

A fitness hooper who has become pregnant and needs a lighter option for waist hooping

Got my hoop a little over a week ago, and it's been fun and easy to use! No complaints. It seems sturdy and was pretty intuitive to put together. Not too heavy but definitely feels substantial.

I may have ordered the wrong size hoops. Will know soon. Really like how these hoops snap together. My older hoops slid together and then you covered with extra tape.

Kids Hoops - Super Snazzy

My 6 year old granddaughter was the hit of Christmas Eve with her hula hoop demo!

It has not arrived - taking forever

After letting my beautiful new, well built, Black Night Hula Hoop "rest" for 24 hours, I tried hooping for the first time in maybe 65 years! Surprisingly, I could keep it going for a few rounds on the very first try! It's gonna take some practice at 75 years young, but I LOVE trying! I can't wait to see if it will help burn a few calories, increase my mobility and stamina, and maybe even trim down my waistline a little! What ever it does, it's super fun and makes me LOL like I did as a kid! Who couldn't use a few more laughs these days! Get one!

How the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest Keeps Traditions Alive

How the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest Keeps Traditions Alive

The sounds of rhythmic drumming, the jingle of bells, and a throaty, traditional song carry over the grassy slopes of the amphitheater at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Spectators fill the seats, fixated on a man dancing on the packed dirt of the performance area at the center. His clothes are embellished with brilliant beadwork—the blue, red, and orange hues decorating his vest and headpiece glint in the sun. Moving nimbly in and out of brightly colored hoops, he interlocks them across his body to mimic the outstretched wings of an eagle before deftly forming the shape of a globe, the Earth, which he then bears upwards toward the sky. This is the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest, which has been held at the Heard Museum for the last 32 years, one of its most popular events.

This March, more than 5,000 people came to watch 100 contestants dance at the competition during two days. Throughout the contest, participants from about 30 different American Indian and First Nations tribes across North America can strut their stuff for up to seven minutes, all while craftily manipulating their chosen number of hoops into a dazzling array of forms, including animals and insects.

The World Championship Hoop Dance Contest involves three rounds of judging, with four divisions that award cash prizes, including a grand prize of $5,000 for the adult division winner. While other Native American events, like the Gathering of Nations (April 28–30) and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial (scheduled to take place August 4–14), may feature other types of traditional dance among the festivities, the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest is the only one in the country to focus solely on hoop dancing for both men and women.

Contestant ShanDien LaRance comes from a family of enthusiastic hoop dancers.

The history of hoop dancing is a little muddled—many North American tribes have laid claim to the dance’s origins throughout the years. But traditionally, it was used by medicine men during healing ceremonies , with the hoops representing the never-ending circle of life. During the 1930s, a Jemez Pueblo man named Tony Whitecloud revolutionized hoop dancing and helped transition the artform from its traditional origins to a form of artistic expression and entertainment. Soon, Whitecloud’s vision traveled across the nation and Native people began dancing with willow hoops to the tunes of intertribal music to commemorate and honor Indigenous history in gatherings that brought together people of diverse backgrounds and tribes. Infused with modern dance choices and inspiration, hoop dancing has become something entirely new—and enchanting.

When hoop dancing began gaining popularity in its early days, there were no gender-specific categories or styles; when the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest was created in 1991, women dancers advocated to not compete separately. While Lisa Odjig is the only female World Champion thus far, competitor ShanDien LaRance (who has Hopi, Tewa, Navajo, and Assiniboine heritage) is glad there aren’t segregated categories. “There’s something empowering about women owning the masculinity of the dance,” she says. “I’m really proud I compete at the same level as men and in the end, it’s our different dance styles that separate us.”

The competition isn’t purely dance—there’s music involved, too. Two groups of singers provide vocals during performances and are known as the northern (higher octave) or southern drums (lower octave). They alternate between contestants for the first two rounds. In the final round, contestants can choose which specific set of drum accompaniment they would like to dance to. “I grew up going to a lot of different powwows and celebrations with my family, so I was fortunate that we grew up dancing to both styles,” says 2020 World Champion Scott Sixkiller Sinquah (who is of Gila River, Pima, Hopi-Tewa, Cherokee, and Choctaw descent). “That said, I do enjoy dancing to the southern drum just a little bit more.”

While there are four official divisions of competition at the World Championship, a fifth division dances but does not compete for scores: the Tiny Tots . Children up to age five perform in the first round of dances to show off their blossoming skills and their burgeoning footwork. It’s a fun way to kick off the competition, and it also serves as an early introduction to the art for kiddos. Hoop dancing is often a family affair and techniques and tips get passed down generationally. “I’ve been dancing for the last 21 years,” says LaRance. “I was taught by my older brother Nakotah, who held several World Champion titles. When I was 8, my parents told him it was time to start teaching me and my younger brother how to hoop dance.”

And for audience members, watching hoop dancing as a person with a non-Indigenous background is a way to get a glimpse of an intimate, but resilient community that has fought to preserve its history and roots in the face of years of persecution and discrimination. For this year’s reigning champion, Sampson Sixkiller Sinquah, Scott’s brother, the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest is one way to keep those traditions alive, all while educating participants. “I feel blessed to be able to share this dance with people from all backgrounds,” he says. “I was taught every time I dance, I’m not dancing for myself. We dance for all the ones who want to dance, everyone who cannot dance, but most importantly, for our ancestors who fought for us to be here.”

Unveiling the Native American Hoop Dance: A Captivating Tale in Motion.

Native American hoop dancing is a mesmerizing art form that has captivated audiences for centuries. This unique dance style combines intricate footwork, graceful arm movements, and the manipulation of multiple hoops to create a visually stunning performance. But beyond its aesthetic appeal, hoop dancing holds a deep cultural significance for Native American communities, serving as a powerful means of storytelling and preserving their rich heritage.

The origins of hoop dancing can be traced back to various Native American tribes across North America. Each tribe has its own distinct style and interpretation of the dance, but the underlying principles remain the same. Hoop dancing is often associated with healing rituals and ceremonies, and it is believed to have originated as a form of prayer and meditation.

In many Native American cultures, the hoop is considered a sacred symbol. It represents the circle of life, the unity of all living things, and the interconnectedness of the natural world. The hoops used in hoop dancing are typically made from willow branches or flexible materials such as plastic or metal. They are carefully crafted and adorned with vibrant colors and intricate designs, reflecting the individuality and creativity of the dancer.

The history of hoop dancing is deeply intertwined with Native American storytelling traditions. Through their movements, dancers convey stories of creation, legends, and historical events. Each dance sequence represents a different aspect of the narrative, with the hoops symbolizing various elements of the story. The dancers' fluid motions and precise coordination with the hoops bring these tales to life, captivating audiences and transporting them into the world of Native American folklore.

Hoop dancing is not only a form of storytelling but also a means of passing down cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. Young dancers learn the art form from their elders, who impart their wisdom and teachings through the dance. This oral tradition ensures that the cultural heritage and values of Native American communities are preserved and celebrated.

Over the years, hoop dancing has evolved and adapted to reflect the changing times. While it remains deeply rooted in tradition, contemporary hoop dancers have incorporated modern elements into their performances. They fuse traditional dance movements with contemporary music, costumes, and props, creating a dynamic and innovative art form that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds.

In recent decades, Native American hoop dancers have gained recognition and acclaim on a global scale. They have performed at prestigious events and venues, including the Olympics, world-renowned theaters, and cultural festivals. These performances not only showcase the immense talent and skill of the dancers but also serve as a platform for raising awareness about Native American culture and history.

The cultural legacy of Native American hoop dancing is a testament to the resilience and strength of indigenous communities. Despite centuries of colonization and marginalization, Native Americans have managed to preserve their traditions and pass them on to future generations. Hoop dancing serves as a powerful reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to thrive within Native American communities today.

In conclusion, Native American hoop dancing is a captivating art form that combines movement , storytelling, and cultural preservation. Its origins can be traced back to various tribes across North America, each with its own unique interpretation of the dance. Hoop dancing serves as a means of storytelling, passing down cultural knowledge, and celebrating the rich heritage of Native American communities. As the art form continues to evolve and gain recognition, it serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of indigenous cultures.

The Cultural Legacy of Native American Hoop Dancing: Storytelling Through Movement

Native American hoop dancing is a traditional art form that has been passed down through generations. It is a mesmerizing display of movement and rhythm, where dancers manipulate and spin hoops in intricate patterns. But beyond its visual appeal, hoop dancing holds deep symbolism and meaning for Native American communities.

At its core, hoop dancing is a form of storytelling. Each movement, each gesture, and each hoop represents a part of a larger narrative. The dancer becomes the storyteller, using their body as a medium to convey tales of creation, nature, and the human experience.

One of the key elements of hoop dancing is the use of multiple hoops. These hoops symbolize different aspects of life and the natural world. The number of hoops used can vary, but each one represents a specific element or concept. For example, the four directions – north, south, east, and west – are often represented by four hoops. This symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of balance and harmony.

The movements of the dancer also hold significant meaning. Each step, jump, and spin is carefully choreographed to convey a specific message. For instance, a dancer might mimic the flight of a bird or the movement of a snake, symbolizing the connection between humans and the natural world. These movements are not only visually captivating but also serve as a way to honor and pay homage to the creatures that inhabit the earth.

In addition to the physical movements, hoop dancing is accompanied by music and song. The rhythm of the drums and the melodic chants add another layer of storytelling to the performance. The music sets the pace and guides the dancer through their narrative, enhancing the emotional impact of the dance.

Hoop dancing is deeply rooted in Native American spirituality and cultural traditions. It is often performed during ceremonies, powwows, and other important events. The dance is seen as a way to connect with ancestors and the spirit world, as well as a means of passing down cultural knowledge to future generations.

The significance of hoop dancing extends beyond Native American communities. It has become a powerful tool for cultural preservation and education. Many Native American dancers travel the world, sharing their art form and educating others about their culture. Through their performances, they challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, promoting a more accurate understanding of Native American history and traditions.

In recent years, hoop dancing has gained recognition and popularity outside of Native American communities. It has become a competitive sport, with dancers from different tribes showcasing their skills and creativity. These competitions not only celebrate the artistry of hoop dancing but also foster a sense of unity and camaraderie among Native American dancers.

The cultural legacy of Native American hoop dancing is a testament to the resilience and strength of indigenous communities. It is a living art form that continues to evolve and adapt, while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. Through the power of movement and storytelling, hoop dancing serves as a bridge between past and present, connecting generations and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Native American peoples.

Hoop dancing is a traditional Native American art form that has been passed down through generations. It holds a significant role in Native American culture, serving as a powerful means of storytelling through movement. This ancient dance form is not only a form of entertainment but also a way to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Native American tribes.

Hoop dancing is believed to have originated among the Plains Indians, particularly the Lakota and Cheyenne tribes. It was initially performed as a form of healing and prayer, with dancers using hoops to create intricate shapes and patterns that symbolize various aspects of nature and spirituality. Over time, hoop dancing evolved into a form of entertainment, performed during social gatherings, ceremonies, and powwows.

The dance itself involves the use of multiple hoops, which are skillfully manipulated by the dancer's body. The hoops are often made from willow branches or reeds, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all living things. Each hoop represents a different element of nature, such as the sun, moon, or animals. As the dancer moves, they create mesmerizing shapes and formations, weaving a visual narrative that tells stories of creation, legends, and historical events.

Hoop dancing is not just about physical agility and coordination; it requires a deep understanding of Native American culture and symbolism. The dancers must embody the spirit of the animals and elements they represent, infusing their movements with grace, strength, and reverence. Through their performance, they communicate the values, beliefs, and traditions of their tribe, passing down ancestral knowledge to future generations.

One of the most remarkable aspects of hoop dancing is its ability to transcend language barriers. Native American tribes have diverse languages and dialects, making it challenging to communicate across different communities. However, hoop dancing serves as a universal language, allowing tribes from different regions to connect and share their stories. It serves as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation for the rich diversity of Native American traditions.

In addition to its cultural significance, hoop dancing has gained recognition as a competitive art form. Many Native American tribes hold annual hoop dancing competitions, where dancers showcase their skills and creativity. These competitions not only celebrate the talent and dedication of the dancers but also provide a platform for cultural exchange and education. They attract participants and spectators from all over the world, promoting awareness and appreciation for Native American culture on a global scale.

Despite its enduring legacy, hoop dancing faced a decline during the era of colonization and forced assimilation. Native American traditions were suppressed, and many cultural practices were lost or forgotten. However, in recent decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in hoop dancing, driven by a renewed sense of cultural pride and a desire to reclaim and preserve Native American heritage.

Today, hoop dancing continues to thrive, with Native American dancers and communities working tirelessly to ensure its survival. It serves as a powerful tool for cultural preservation, allowing Native Americans to reclaim their identity and share their stories with the world. Through the mesmerizing movements of hoop dancing, the rich cultural legacy of Native American tribes lives on, inspiring future generations to embrace their heritage and celebrate the beauty of diversity.

Native American hoop dancing is a traditional art form that has been passed down through generations. It is a mesmerizing display of skill, creativity, and storytelling. The dance involves intricate footwork, precise hand movements, and the manipulation of multiple hoops. Each movement and gesture has a specific meaning, allowing the dancer to convey stories and messages to the audience.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in Native American hoop dancing. Many dancers have taken it upon themselves to adapt the dance to contemporary settings while still preserving its cultural significance. This has led to a fusion of traditional and modern elements, creating a unique and captivating experience for audiences around the world.

One of the ways in which hoop dancing has been adapted is through the incorporation of different music styles. While traditional Native American drumming and singing are still commonly used, dancers have also started to experiment with other genres such as hip-hop, electronic, and even classical music. This blending of musical styles adds a fresh and dynamic element to the dance, attracting a wider audience and keeping the tradition alive.

Another adaptation of hoop dancing is the use of LED hoops. These illuminated hoops create a stunning visual effect, enhancing the storytelling aspect of the dance. The LED lights can change colors and patterns, adding an extra layer of symbolism and meaning to the performance. This modern twist on a traditional art form not only captivates the audience but also serves as a reminder of the adaptability and resilience of Native American culture.

In addition to contemporary adaptations, there is also a strong emphasis on preserving the authenticity of Native American hoop dancing. Many dancers dedicate themselves to learning from elders and master dancers, ensuring that the traditional techniques and stories are passed down accurately. This commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of hoop dancing is essential in maintaining its integrity and ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate and learn from this art form.

Furthermore, Native American hoop dancing has become a platform for cultural exchange and education. Dancers often perform at schools, museums, and cultural events, sharing their stories and traditions with a wider audience. This not only raises awareness about Native American culture but also fosters understanding and appreciation for the rich heritage of indigenous peoples.

The impact of Native American hoop dancing goes beyond the stage. It serves as a powerful symbol of resilience, strength, and cultural identity. Through the art of movement, dancers are able to connect with their ancestors, their land, and their community. The stories told through hoop dancing transcend language barriers, allowing people from different backgrounds to come together and experience the beauty and wisdom of Native American culture.

In conclusion, the contemporary adaptations and preservation of Native American hoop dancing have breathed new life into this ancient art form. The fusion of traditional and modern elements, the use of different music styles, and the incorporation of LED hoops have made hoop dancing more accessible and captivating to audiences worldwide. At the same time, the commitment to preserving the authenticity of the dance ensures that its cultural legacy remains intact. Native American hoop dancing serves as a powerful tool for cultural exchange and education, fostering understanding and appreciation for indigenous traditions. Through storytelling and movement, hoop dancing continues to inspire and connect people, leaving a lasting impact on both performers and spectators alike.

Climate Forward

With or without tesla, more e.v. chargers are coming.

Experts say that a new wave of electric vehicle charging stations are coming soon, even after Tesla gutted its charger team.

Blue and white charging stations in a parking lot.

By Manuela Andreoni

Last week, Tesla laid off most of its electric car charging team , raising doubts about the feasibility of the Biden administration’s ambitious E.V. expansion plans.

Though Tesla accounts for more than half of the fast E.V. chargers currently installed in the United States, and though it has continued to build them faster and cheaper than anyone else, the E.V. charging market may no longer need Tesla to lead it.

In fact, experts I spoke to believe the E.V. charging industry is set to expand quickly over the next few years. Let me explain why.

At first, Tesla’s move seemed like a blow to a sector that may seem like it’s struggling to grow despite the $7.5 billion investment from the bipartisan infrastructure law passed by President Biden in 2021. The administration’s goal is to build a network of a half million fast and slow chargers in the country by 2030, more than double what the U.S. has today . But roughly two and a half years after the bill’s passage only eight federally funded charging stations have opened in six states, according to government data.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s C.E.O., hasn’t explained why he decided to cut back on charger construction, but some analysts interviewed by my colleagues Jack Ewing and Ivan Penn said he had probably concluded that it would become harder to make money from charging as more companies entered the market.

As Ewing and Penn wrote, last year all major automakers selling cars in North America agreed to use the charging plug developed by Tesla, which has a reputation for being reliable and easy-to-use.

That leaves the question I set out to answer. What’s holding back the expansion of America’s electric charging infrastructure? Spoiler alert: The picture isn’t nearly as grim as it may seem.

“We’re not seeing a lag in process or progress,” Ellen Kennedy, a transportation expert at RMI, a clean energy think tank, told me. “I think that people have been taking a dim view of this without actually considering that what has been happening is amazing.”

Jumping through hoops

You might think Kennedy is being overly optimistic, but she’s not alone in thinking the U.S. is turning the corner on E.V. chargers.

My colleague Ewing, who has been covering automakers for decades, told me he has been hearing much of the same thing from experts. “A lot of people told me that the charger infrastructure has a momentum of its own,” he said. “Things are going up pretty fast.”

Including the federally funded program, the U.S. has added an average of about 2,800 fast and slow charging ports a month over the past year, according to government data . (A charging station can have several ports.) Many companies are excited, Ewing said, about the prospect of building out E.V. stations that can offer entertainment, dining and shopping options for drivers. That’s already happening in Norway .

The point of the federal government’s program isn’t simply to add more chargers to the network, but rather to guarantee there is an equitable distribution across the country, and to match charging infrastructure to demand.

“The charging networks, you know, just aren’t building these charging stations where there’s very little E.V. traffic,” Loren McDonald, the C.E.O. of EVAdoption, an industry data and analysis company, told me. “But it’s a chicken and egg thing, and that’s what this program is trying to solve.”

In a statement, the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, which is responsible for the federal charger program, said, “We want to get it right to ensure we have a charging network that makes it easier for Americans to find a charge than to fill up on gas.”

The obstacles remaining

Still, coordination between the federal government, states and utilities can take time. Most of the money for E.V. chargers is federal, but states are the ones that need to spend it. And then, utilities must connect charging stations to the grid.

Utilities often delay projects. It can take months after a station is built for the local utility to connect it to the grid. A shortage of transformers and switch gears can add another layer of delays.

The good news is that every state, as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., have presented plans for how they will spend federal resources. But staffing can be an issue. States with high E.V. adoption, like New York, have more experienced staff handling charger expansion efforts than states where fewer people own electric cars, such as South Carolina.

The layoffs at Tesla won’t help any of this go faster. But the company picked up only 14 percent of the contracts from the federal charger program so far, according to EVAdoption. Dozens of competitors, like Francis Energy and Love’s Travel Stop, are working to build the rest.

Overcoming these obstacles is taking time. But all the experts I’ve spoken to expect that to change soon.

Right now, federally funded new stations are opening roughly one a month. McDonald said he expects them to open once a week or once a day by the end of the year.

McDonald also pointed out that public chargers, some of which can recharge a battery in less than half an hour, aren’t where most E.V. charging happens. Most charging happens at home, at work or wherever people park, using slower chargers that can take several hours to charge a car up, but get the job done.

The Biden administration’s “messaging has perhaps overly focused on the fast charging aspect of it,” McDonald said. “The biggest sort of challenge is, well, just education.”

For people considering buying an electric car, seeing charging stations pop up everywhere may help dispel some of their concerns. “We have this saying in the industry that the charger anxiety has replaced range anxiety,” McDonald said.

Still, when it comes to the Biden administration’s expansion plans, McDonald said “ it actually is fair to say that by and large, the program is on track .”

Today on The Daily: Our warming oceans

Ocean temperatures have been hitting record highs for more than a year now, puzzling scientists and raising the prospect of cataclysmic changes to life on Earth.

On Tuesday’s episode of The Daily , David Gelles and Raymond Zhong explain why the oceans are so hot, how the heat is already upending marine life and weather patterns, and what even bigger changes might be in store.

Climate change has been making oceans warmer for decades. But starting last March, scientists noticed a sharp jump in sea surface temperatures. Oceans have absorbed much of the excess heat produced by global warming, but that alone doesn’t explain the spike recorded over the past year.

Another factor was likely the current El Niño cycle , which typically has an overall warming effect on the world’s oceans. Still another likely cause has been the recent changes in shipping regulations that led to reduced air pollution over the North Atlantic, which counter-intuitively allowed more of the sun’s energy to reach the ocean, warming it up. But even when factoring in all those dynamics, scientists are still perplexed by the record heat .

All that extra heat is already having effects. As Catrin Einhorn has reported, coral reefs around the world are experiencing a mass bleaching event . Corals are vitally important parts of marine ecosystems, and responsible for some $2.7 trillion of economic activity. Their disappearance is a problem for the oceans and humans alike.

The warm oceans are also expected to contribute to an active hurricane season. As Judson Jones reported last month, a key area of the Atlantic Ocean where hurricanes form is abnormally warm , conditions that one leading scientist called “unprecedented,” “alarming” and an “out-of-bounds anomaly.”

Even bigger changes could be in store. A key current that moves warm water from the equatorial region up into the North Atlantic is showing early signs of collapsing . The last time that happened, more than 12,000 years ago, Europe was plunged into an ice age.

Listen to the whole episode here.

Jennifer Lawrence roasts Mike Pence at GLAAD Media Awards

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence made some lewd and crude comments about former Vice President Mike Pence at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday — that had the crowd in stitches.

The star gave her profane, irreverent speech while honoring country musician Orville Peck with the Vito Russo Award.

“The Hunger Games” star said that she “loved seeing so many humans who can top their field while still power bottoming. Not to mention being in a room with this many men and not need[ing] mace.”

Jennifer Lawrence

She continued that she “loves” the gay community, adding her “first love” was a “homosexual” who she attempted to “convert” for years. “But now I know conversion therapy doesn’t work,” the Oscar winner explained. “Did you hear me Mike Pence?”

Then, to the delight of the audience, Lawrence further stuck it to the GOP pol . “Conversion therapy isn’t real. Even though you think it worked on you,” she said of the former Indiana governor.

She added the below-the-belt joke: “You know he’s in New York tonight? He’s receiving a Kids’ Choice Award for weirdest d - - k.”

Mike Pence

(We’re not even sure what that means, but we’ve reached out to a rep for Pence for comment on Lawrence’s speech.)

Pence, who has been married to wife Karen since 1985, has been previously slammed by LGBTQ activists for supporting conversion therapy and opposing gay marriage.

In 2017, about 200 protesters with glow sticks , hula hoops and rainbow flags held a “Queer Dance Party” in front of his residence.

Pence also reportedly backed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act as Indiana’s governor, which was criticized as anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Mike Pence

HBO’s John Oliver has also previously taken aim at Pence , with a parody book about his pet bunny.

Either way, Lawrence went on to talk about her friendship with Peck, whom she met at a party. “After swapping numbers and live texting during ‘Housewives,’ soon we took it to the next level,” she said.

Also at the gala were Jennifer Hudson, Uma Thurman and Don Lemon.

Harvard police say lock on main gate was cut with bolt cutters during pro-Palestinian protest

The Johnston Gate at Harvard University on May 9. Harvard Yard has been closed to the public after students established a pro-Palestinian encampment there last month.

Harvard University police officers said Sunday night that a lock to one of the university’s main gates around the Harvard Yard was cut during a pro-Palestinian protest Saturday evening .

Officers responded to the scene at Johnston Gate around 7 pm Saturday, and found the cut lock and “an abandoned bag inside of the Yard containing bolt cutters,” said Harvard police department spokesperson Steven Catalano.

“Officers believe the lock was intentionally cut by someone within the Yard to permit access to the Yard by approximately 150 protestors outside of the Yard made up of persons not affiliated and affiliated with the University,” Catalano said. “There was no breach of the Yard. Officers immediately responded to the gate to secure it.”

Harvard spokesperson Jonathan Swain said: “The intentional step by what appears to have been someone inside Harvard Yard to cut a lock on the Johnston Gate during a protest is extremely concerning.

“The safety and security of the Harvard community remains the University’s top priority as we continue to manage the ongoing disruption resulting from the encampment in Harvard Yard,” Swain said. “The ongoing encampment is a violation of Harvard policies and continues to significantly disrupt the educational environment and University operations.”

Swain said Harvard security and facilities staff have reported multiple incidents of “efforts to pry open gates and cut gate locks,” since officials closed the gates to the public on April 21. Only Harvard ID holders have been able to access the Yard since then.

Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, the main group leading the encampment, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday night.

The encampment was quiet at midnight Monday, with several students sitting and chatting on folding chairs. At least four cars were parked in Harvard Yard; one of them, its lights flashing, bore the name of a private security company, Securitas.

In an Instagram post, HOOP said: “No disciplinary consequences will stand between us and our commitment to a liberated Palestine. We will not rest until Harvard discloses and divests from its investments in genocide.”

Pro-Palestinian Harvard students set up their encampment on April 24.

A pro-Palestinian rally at Harvard’s Science Center Plaza, on May 11.

Student organizers say they’re trying to show solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where 34,000 have died since Israel invaded after the Hamas-led terror attack on Israel on Oct. 7, and to educate the Harvard community about the conflict. Student protesters want the university to disclose and divest Israeli assets, and drop disciplinary charges against students related to pro-Palestinian advocacy. Organizers have held teach-in events, open-mic nights, dance performances, and other events and activities at the encampment to build community.

The university, however, appears to be growing increasingly impatient with the encampment, now the last demonstration of its kind left in Greater Boston.

Last week, Harvard interim president Alan Garber met with student protesters after more than 350 faculty members signed an open letter urging him to do so. (Another letter, signed by about 150 faculty members at the time of delivery, urged Garber to remove the encampment.)

In the meeting, which Harvard said was not a negotiation, Garber offered the students, in exchange for ending their encampment, a meeting with a member of the top university governing board’s Committee on Shareholder Responsibility and other officials to address questions about the endowment. He also shared a final warning that students would be suspended indefinitely from school if they did not dismantle the encampment that evening.

Student organizers rejected Garber’s proposal.

On Friday, protesters started receiving notifications that they were suspended indefinitely , and required to vacate campus by midday Saturday. Some protesters have nevertheless remained at the encampment in the Harvard Yard, where about 30 tents still remain. More than 20 protesters have been suspended.

It’s unclear what next steps will look like at Harvard, but other campuses in the Boston area have resorted to calling law enforcement to forcibly remove encampments, including at MIT, where police arrested 10 protesters and cleared the site early Friday morning.

“I feel very hopeful, because we’ve seen divestment campaigns in the past, many of which have included encampments like these, and they have been successful,” said Violet Barron, 19, a sophomore who was a founding member of the student group Jews for Palestine, in a recent interview. “It takes big actions like this to push the needle.”

Since the early days of the encampment, Harvard administrators have reminded students that “erecting structures, tents, and tables without authorization is a violation” of university rules, and said that students who disrupted normal activities and duties would face “disciplinary consequences.”

Swain said that there have been “increasing reports from frontline staff of harassing and intimidating behavior by participants in the encampment protest.”

“This behavior includes reports of staff being yelled at and encircled by protesters as they do their work, as well as being confronted, followed and subjected to audio and video recording,” Swain said. “These reports are not only from staff carrying out ID checks and other work to enforce policies, but also from staff while going about routine duties.”

On Friday, students rallying in Harvard Yard unfurled banners on the exterior of dormitories to announce they had renamed the buildings in honor of deceased Palestinians. There was also a poster hanging from a tree Friday that read “Alan Garbage funds genocide,” with a drawing of Garber as a devil, with horns and a tail, sitting on a toilet. Portraying Jews as demons is widely understood to be an antisemitic trope.

The next evening, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters rallied outside the gates of Harvard Yard, and marched through Harvard Square, temporarily blocking traffic.
