This Iconic Kitchenware Brand Launches Culinary Trips That Include Harvesting Oysters in Normandy and Olive Oil Tasting in Marseille

The food-focused journeys will immerse travelers in French culinary traditions.

Hungry for adventures? Sur La Table, the national retailer of cookware and bakeware, is entering the travel industry by launching a series of trips to immerse travelers in the culinary traditions of France. The Seattle-based company partnered with Academic Travel Abroad Inc., a decades-old cultural and educational travel provider, to host two curated itineraries in September and October, with more journeys coming up in 2025.

“At Sur La Table, we’re constantly looking for new ways to engage with our customers that bring to life our passion for cooking and celebrating cuisine from around the world,” Meredith Abbot, culinary director and trip expert at Sur La Table, told Travel+Leisure, noting that the partnership will allow the company to “take our signature cooking programming to the most iconic culinary destinations for a fully immersive trip.”

Cooking classes, visits to local markets, food tours, and workshops with artisans will be some of the experiences included in the hyper-local itineraries. The first trip will take place from Sept. 1 until Sept. 8 and will introduce travelers to the gastronomic culture of Northwestern France. From learning to harvest mussels and oysters in the Bay of Biscay to making crepes in the historic port city of Saint-Malo, smoking salmon, and visiting the picture-perfect island of Mont Saint-Michel (at low tide, of course), this week-long trip will whisk travelers to some of the most beautiful corners of Brittany and Normandy.

The second culinary journey, A Taste of Provence and the French Riviera will take place in Marseille and Nice from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6. Guests will try their hand at preparing classic Bouillabaisse seafood soup with a local chef, will learn all about sea salt production in the small village of Salins de Giraud, and will cook a classic Niçois meal with fresh produce from a local organic farm. Another highlight of this trip is a private tour of the Maison Empereur, the oldest specialty store in France.

Both trips will include hands-on experiences and lectures so travelers leave with a better understanding of the history and culture of these distinct culinary regions. Groups will cap at 25 people, and rates start at $7,995, excluding flights.

In a press release, Sur La Table said that its 2025 itineraries will include Paris and the South of Italy.

Full menu TheFork – La Table du Chateau Belmont

We ate here on a Saturday evening on a stay over to break a long drive. The restaurant was full and when we sat down there were a lot of people waiting to be served or to have their order taken. After a fairly long... wait and having to ask for menus, they don’t have enough to go round, the Maitre D took our order offering to come to advise on local wines. He did not and the recommendation of another waiter was not great, but was expensive. Service was slow but the food good. The low point was when the fillet of beef was served this was one piece as opposed to two that had been served to tables around us. The lady on the next table asked if we had ordered from the weight watchers menu! I spoke to the Maitre D who was apologetic and explained they had a lack of staff, surely this is not the customers fault. Would it be fair of me when presented with the bill to apologise for a lack of funds!!! No adjustment was made to our bill for the half portions although service did improve. Probably worth a trip in to Tour if you are staying in the hotel. More

Having been disappointed with a restaurant in Tours itself and also not liking the look of the restaurant we had booked for the second night we opted to eat at the Hotel Restaurant. The first night we ate outside which was very pleasant but had... to eat inside on the second as it was raining. The staff were very pleasant and service was efficient. The food was good but the menu limited and did not change day on day. Good wine list but quite expensive More

A 4 star hotel in a castle, in the Loire valley, maybe I was expecting.......a fairy tale! It didn’t happen. I felt like staying in a senior residence in New Jersey. A beautiful park in which there are 2 private residences and in the middle... a castle transformed in a no charm hotel. I had booked a suite in the old aisle. The room and bathroom were big. Decoration was hospital style, functional but you think of something else than a picture of the arm chairs from the Jardin du Luxembourg ‘s park in Paris, above the bed!!! Bathroom was big, but except a shower gel and shampoo, no body cream or conditioner or fancy amenities that you usually find in a real 4* hotel. the in room fridge was very minimalistic. Staff was nice, but slow. I ordered my breakfast in the room, for a supplement, and it was 15 minutes late . Very basic breakfast not even a plate in the tray, nor butter The restaurant, so called gastronomic was average and pretentious. The food had no taste, we add to add salt and pepper on everything. The amuse bouche, to pretend to be in a gastronomic place, was some dry couscous in a small container, and the nibbles were a bit outdated. So I don’t understand why this place is advertised as a good restaurant. I am lucky to go to great restaurants, but this one is not. So if you want something fancy, do not stay here, if you want a preview of an assisting living residence, try it. More

enjoyed a dinner at Table du Chateau... efficient service, all set menu, good choice in menu, friendly waiters, excellent food - recommended

Dear guest, We thank you for taking the time to post this review. We are happy that you have enjoyed our cuisine and restaurant service. You are very welcome ! Kind regards, The Hotel Management

We arrived on a cold wet afternoon and decided the easiest option was to eat in the hotel restaurant rather than facing the elements. It really was a good move. Friendly staff, high quality meal and reasonable priced wine list. Couldn't ask for anything more.

The food was good but not special. Our dinner was provided by Viking River Cruises pre-tour of the Loire Valley. I do believe that there is a more expensive menu that might have been more special. I usually prefer not to eat in a hotel... restaurant but this one was very nice. Has a very nice buffet breakfast as well. the next night we went out to eat in the town of Tours More

I would have expected an excellent fillet steak in France in a 4 * hotel but the chef failed miserably on two attempts - they did not get a third chance

We tried the restaurant during our Europe trip and it was a real experience. 44€ for 3 courses and the wine list was quite affordable. Nice cocktails, friendly staff with no chichi:) More

JULY 14 2022 BASTILLE DAY,Restaurant full ….service as quick as you could reasonably expect whilst the staff remained friendly and courteous .However the food choice, quality and quantity was way below the class of a hotel of this stature. How the chef or cuisenier knew I was... on a diet was incredable …..PORTIONS MEAGRE,this is not HAUTE CUISINE…MAITRE,D is RUDE,does not show women enough respect and on the basis of the points I’ve raised we would not be returning too stay or eat here even if the hotel offered a free stay,it left a very bad taste in our mouths so much so we have returned too discussing it on our travels through France and Spain and even as I write in a 5 star hotel at Le Saint Remy in St Remy de Provence the whole experience has left a repeating of the stay at Chateau Belmont.IT NEEDS A GOOD REVIEW BY ALA THE DIRECTOR TO BE TREATED AS A PLACE TOO LOOK FORWARD TO DINING AT IN OR IN THE FUTURE….ANYONE WHO THINKS OR REVIEWS THIS FOOD AS BEING GOOD OR AMAZING SHOULD CONTINUE EATING AT MACDONALDS ITS CHEAPER ….Such a disappointment as we have stayed here before and had a better experience More

Dear guest, We thank you for your kind review and we are happy to know that you have appreciated your experience in our restaurant. We look forward welcoming you again, The Hotel Manager

This terrace restaurant has an excellent menu and the food - when it arrives- is excellent. The wait however is totally unacceptable. A 55 minute wait for an amuse -bouche is just the start. The service was so delayed that a desert choice would probably... arrive with breakfast. Poor poor service. When the maitre’d was approached he accepted all of our comments but gave no reciprocation or explanation. Disappointed by the horrendous service. Ruined the night. - my birthday celebration!! More

A four star hotel in pleasant grounds shared with two retirement residences. The best rooms are in the hotels residence annexe as the the rooms in the Chateau are ultra modern with poor lighting and insufficient power sockets.Room 27 in the Chateau is noisy as... it above the kitchens extractor fan which starts at 6.30 in the morning. The staff are both friendly, efficient and helpful. The restaurant serves three course dinner at a reasonable price but the wine is not cheap. The hotel is a short walk to the tram system that takes you to the centre of Tours. More

I’m from Sweden and used to pay a lot for a dinner at a restaurant but even though this dinner was really expensive for me, which is ok depending on the food. I took a duck and lobster penne as main dish and it was... really small size (10 penne pasta pieces!) for being a main and the pasta which you think would be home made for the price you paid is not. More

We were travelling up through France on our way to Saint-Malo and decided to stop off at this hotel. We were travelling with a small dog and this hotel is ideal with gated grounds perfect for a pet and it cost €20 for the night... additional. They have a small indoor pool and very small limited gym but serviceable. It's about a 10 minute walk from the river where there's plenty of walking. The room was one of the newly constructed wings which was a good size and very comfortable although the air conditioning was set only to heat so had to sleep with windows open to get some fresh air. Bathroom had bath and rain shower separately and was a good size And good water pressure. We ordered room service because they could not fit us in at the time we wanted for dinner it was a Saturday night and very busy the room service menu was limited but the food was perfectly good. The hairdryer in the bathroom was attached which my wife does not like. It is very convenient for parking which you can do next to the main building within the gated private grounds. Internet is free and wireless and serviceable in terms of Speed. I would definitely stay here again. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and checking was most efficient. More

The Table de Roc ridge on the Aiguille du Tour is a unique route. Not only is the climbing enjoyable, and the Tour a fine summit, but the Table, after which the route is named, is an amazing feature, one you are not likely to forget. To form the table, a giant granite block fell over on its side, and miraculously stayed perched right on the ridge crest. It has been there for many decades. and will likely continue to amuse and challenge climbers for many more years to come.

This route is primarily a rock climb, starting first on easy glacier then gaining the ridge which leads to the Table. From here, a sharp jagged crest of granite spires is followed to the summit of the Aiguille du Tour.

In the early season a fine variation can be had by climbing the Couloir de la Table, a steep snow gully on the southwest side of the peak. The Couloir leads to a notch in the ridge just above the Table, but it is also possible to exit to the left and gain the ridge below the Table, thus taking in this feature of the route.

Like the normal route on the Tour (which is our descent route) The Arête de la Table is reached from the Albert Premier hut, and this is where we spend the night preceding the climb. Rising early we climb up the edge of the Tour Glacier, gain the ridge leading to the Table (by one of the many options), arriving under the Table on a large ledge. To surmount the Table an exposed mantle is required. Easier but continually airy climbing leads to the sharp summit.

The Table du Roc is a moderately difficult climb. It is not overly long and we normally have time to complete the route (starting early from the hut) and either return to Chamonix the same day or have a relaxing afternoon back at the hut. But we do need to be able to keep to good time on the route, and climbers need to be able to move efficiently on steep and exposed rock.

The hardest climbing is about mid-5th class (French 5a), but the entire route is done in our mountaineering boots. If we climb the Couloir de la Table, we will encounter steep snow or ice to about 50 degrees.
