What It's Like to Road Trip Through the Himalayas

After an hours-long journey over unpaved roads and through an icy, gushing river; we arrived at the Rangdum Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery that sits atop a small hill surrounded by towering mountains. The Gompa was built by Gelek Yashi Takpa under King Twesang Mangyul of Ladakh in the eighteenth century. It now houses roughly 30-40 resident monks. In Ladakh, a Buddhist monastery always sits at the highest point above the village.

We spotted a field full of yaks and decided to stop and observe these enormous animals up close. Ozzie snapped this yak grazing (and paying no attention to us) during the peak of summer near the town of Rangdum in the Suru Valley. Rangdum is virtually inaccessible during the winter, when heavy snow blankets the region. The snow melt is crucial for a healthy, summer grass stock, and in turn, all animals that eat grass. The yak is one of the most important for Ladakhis; they make yak milk, yak butter, and curd, and use the yak hair to make winter garments.

(Left) Ladakhi women pose for a portrait before a dance performance in the village of Chushot during the annual Ladakh Polo Festival . I had noticed women in all their finery walking in and out of the outdoor "green room," which is visible in the background. I requested to come in, and asked the performers if I could photograph them—they were more than happy to show off their costumes. They are dressed in the traditional kuntop (a thick, wool robe) with Tibetan jewelry and wear papu , local shoes made with yak hair and leather.

(Right) Traditional hand-woven Ladakhi carpets are left out to dry in the village of Nyoma, with a Buddhist temple in the distance. It is common for Ladakhi women to weave their own carpets by hand, using sheep and yak wool and natural dyes. Carpets like these can cost anywhere from $100 into the thousands, depending on the wool used, size, and amount of time spent on the intricate hand embroidery. While most of the rugs in the local markets are still handmade, factory-made knockoffs have also entered the market at cheaper rates.

A Tibetan man walks from one settlement to another in the Changthang region of eastern Ladakh, close to the Indian border. He wears a goncha , the traditional men’s dress in Ladakh, to protect himself from the weather. (A goncha is a robe made from yak wool and tied with a cummerbund at the waist to hold it closed). In this high desert plateau, temperatures can fluctuate between 41 and and 86 degrees Fahrenheit during the day with rain, hail, and strong winds.

As soon as we entered any Ladakhi home, we were customarily offered butter tea, which is made by boiling tea leaves from the region and mixing in salt and a dollop of homemade yak butter. The tea is sometimes served with tsampa , chunks of dough made by mixing roasted barley flour with water or butter tea. The first few times I tried the tea, I struggled to finish my bowl. But when I started to think of it a salty soup, I came to enjoy it.

It's Tibetan custom that a bowl is never left empty, so if you put your bowl down, your host will continue to refill it. (Want to stop drinking butter tea? Just leave your bowl full.) Still, some things are changing with the tradition: As Ladakh opens up to the rest of the world, many families now opt to use store-bought cow butter in their tea. A young girl with whom we stayed said that her family doesn’t own yaks anymore and cannot make the butter from scratch; it’s also easier and cheaper to buy packaged cow butter, which has a longer shelf life.

(Left) Ali Mohammed, 35, and his wife Shafika, 32, work together to collect milk from one of the sheep in their flock.  Ali and Shafika belong to the nomadic pastoral tribe called Bakarwals, and spend their summers in the upper reaches of Ladakh to graze their animals. With help from their family, they bring more than 3,000 animals from the plains of Kashmir to graze in this fertile valley every summer. On one occasion, Ozzie even joined Ali as he ascended 5,000 feet into the mountains to graze the animals on very difficult terrain.

(Right) A young boy wears a Chinese-style Tang suit in the village of Nyoma in the Changthang Cold Desert region of Ladakh. Ladakh's proximity to the Chinese border has brought the influence of Chinese goods on traditional Ladakhi life—including the customary way of dressing. This boy was playing in the village center, and when he saw me walking by with my camera, he and his friends asked me take a picture of them. I took a portrait of him separately before he ran off with his friends.

Ozzie hops off the bike to take in the surreal landscapes in the Changthang Cold Desert Sanctuary region of Ladakh in the state of Kashmir, India. Tourism in Ladakh, which only opened to visitors in 1974, is booming: In 2017, more than 300,000 domestic and international tourists are expected to visit Ladakh. And while snow cuts Ladakh off by road for some six months every year, visitors have been flying in during the winter months to undertake difficult treks and to experience the challenging terrain. Almost every Ladakhi I spoke to seemed concerned at the rate at which tourism was exploding. On the one hand, they were happy that local families could now earn a better living from tourism, but they weren't happy with the direction in which tourism was going. One reason: Ladakh now struggles with water scarcity and exponential amounts of garbage, which puts enormous pressure on a region facing the debilitating effects of climate change .

How to plan your dream trip to the Himalayas

For mountain lovers and the vertically inclined the Himalayas represent nothing less than the crowning apex of nature's grandeur. Here dramatic forested gorges rise to skylines of snow-capped glaciated peaks through a landscape that ranges from high-altitude desert to dripping rhododendron forest.

Home to some 50 million people, this is no alpine wilderness, but rather a vibrant mosaic of peoples, cultures and communities, criss-crossed by ancient trading and pilgrimage routes that offer their own unique inspiration. Test your mettle against some of the world's most audacious and dangerous roads, or set a more measured pace on a trek through yak pastures to prayer flag-strewn passes haunted by snow leopards and red pandas. Stretching in a 1550 mile-long arc (2500km) across Asia from Kashmir to Kathmandu , Lhasa to Ladakh , the Himalayan range is a big place. Focus your pilgrimage on one of these dream trips.

Brightly colored prayer flags flutter in the breeze beside a bright, clear lake surrounded by sandy colored hills

Ladakh – India's little Tibet

Hidden over high passes in an arid, largely treeless rain shadow, Ladakh is classic Trans Himalayan scenery: huge khaki-colored valleys and harsh rock walls brought alive by the occasional splash of irrigated green. Traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture remains intact here, with spectacularly located monasteries that burst into life during medieval masked dance festivals that have changed little in 500 years. Travelers should expect epic treks, sparkling high-altitude mountain lakes, and a well developed infrastructure with inexpensive guesthouses around the capital, Leh .

When to go: June to September.

Getting there: Daily flights from Delhi to Leh, or take the spectacular seasonal high roads over the Himalayas from Manali or Srinigar .

Suggested itinerary: Hire a jeep or an Enfield motorbike and drive out to ancient Hemis , Lamayuru and Thiksey monasteries, taking a side trip to the turquoise lake of Pangong Tso bordering Tibet ; afterwards, do a five-day homestay trek through the Markha Valley.

Off the beaten track alternative: Spiti , in neighboring Himachal Pradesh , has the same dramatic mountain scenery and monasteries but without the crowds. Trek from village to village with a local organization and overnight at the incredible monasteries of Dhankar and Tabo .

Tibet – roof of the world

The high Tibetan plateau is the rooftop of Asia, hidden from the Indian subcontinent behind the ramparts of the Great Himalaya. Despite Chinese-led modernization, Tibet 's great monasteries still hum with murmured mantras and the flicker of yak butter lamps. Sublime landscapes, ranging from rolling grasslands to high-altitude turquoise lakes, a vibrant Buddhist culture and the friendly and resilient Tibetan people are the highlights here, as are the views of Everest's North Face – miles better than anything you'll see in Nepal.

When to go: Mid-May to September.

Getting there: Flights to Lhasa from  Chengdu , Beijing and many other cities in China , or take the world's highest train from China to Lhasa.

Suggested itinerary: Join a tour for the seven- to ten-day overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu, stopping at the incredible multistory stupa (structure containing Buddhist relics) at Gyantse and the spectacular medieval monastery at Sakya.

Off the beaten track alternative:  Complete a rugged three-day trek around Asia's most sacred peak, Mt Kailash , in remote Western Tibet, and then visit the incredible Kashmiri-influenced art of Tsaparang and the Guge Kingdom, hidden deep in the weirdly eroded desert gorges of the Sutlej Valley. Paved roads and an airport outside Ali make the two-week trip much less arduous than it used to be, though you still have to hire transport and a guide through an agency in Lhasa or Kathmandu.

Nepal – a trekker's paradise

The best way to experience the mountains is on foot, and Himalayan treks just don't get any more spectacular or convenient than in Nepal . Follow mountain paths past lines of spinning prayer wheels and charming stone Sherpa or Tamang villages to the foot of jaw-dropping 8000m peaks like Annapurna or Everest, safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day you’re guaranteed a cozy bed and hot dinner. Add on a visit to the medieval cities of the Kathmandu Valley , once a Himalayan artistic powerhouse.

When to go: March, April, October, November.

Getting there: Fly to Kathmandu and hop on a domestic flight to Lukla for the Everest region. Pokhara is the launch pad for treks in the Annapurna region.

Suggested itinerary: To trek to Everest Base Camp you need a minimum of 14 days, but we recommend adding on a four day side visit to the stunning mountain lakes of the Gokyo valley. Factor in ample time to acclimatize.

Off the beaten track alternative: The 17-day walk around Manaslu is possibly Nepal's greatest teahouse trek (you stay in lodges along the way), or go camping expedition-style on an epic three-week trip to the Dolpo or Kanchenjunga regions.

Colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze. A white monastery structure, built into the side of the mountain, is in the background

Bhutan – the last Shangri-la

As the last surviving great Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan has an otherworldly air that seems rooted in another age. Traditional dress is the norm everywhere, old-growth forest carpets the majority of the countryside and remote Himalayan peoples like the Layaps and Brokpas live a life largely untouched by the modern age. Simply put, Bhutan is like nowhere on earth. The catch? The fixed minimum daily rate of US$250 per person is mandatory, although this does include transport, meals, guide and accommodation.

When to go: March, April, September, October.

Getting there: Fly to Paro from Delhi or Bangkok, or drive overland from neighboring India.

Suggested itinerary: Explore the delightful Paro Valley and its iconic Tiger's Nest Hermitage  (Taktshang Goemba) before driving to the little-visited Haa Valley, the tiny capital of Thimphu and the sensual fortress-monastery of Punakha. Schedule your visit around one of Bhutan's colorful tsechus (monastic festivals).

Off the beaten track alternative: The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Mustang in Nepal also comes with a hefty daily permit cost (US$500 per person), though you'll get a chance to explore centuries-old Tibetan architecture and may even gain an audience with the king.

What comes to your mind, when I say “ adventure in the Himalayas ”? I am quite sure your answer would include things like trekking, skiing, hiking, mountaineering, river rafting and paragliding. But there is more to excite you in the Himalayas than these; and that is the scintillating road trips, which are undertaken by thousands of people, year after year. There is a certain charm about riding through the Himalayan regions that beckons adventure seekers from across the globe. The challenges that one faces during these road trips are innumerable, but everything gets compensated by the satisfaction of successfully completing it.

The road trips to the Himalayas guarantee an unlimited supply of breathtaking locales, panoramic views and unspoiled beauty. From the far reaches of the Ladakh region to the closer Uttarakhand and Himachal Valley, the plentiful opportunity one gets to explore the Himalayan range is truly astounding. Fortunately, I have been lucky enough to have enjoyed some liberating road trips, especially in the Himalayas. Whether one agrees, but these trips remain etched in our minds so deep that one can visualise them just like a movie.

And if you think, you are ready to go on such a road trip to the Himalayas, then read on and find out the ways of doing so; remember, each option is as good as the other, it all depends on your capability and level of enthusiasm.

Meandering Through the Himalayas on Bikes A motorbike trip into the scenic valleys of the Himalayas is nothing short of a dream-come-true for many. Hence, every year, we see hundreds of bikers from across the country making their way towards the Himalayan Mountains with unparalleled enthusiasm. True that mountaineering and trekking lovers outnumber the motorbiking enthusiasts as of today, but this is likely to change in the years to come.

Bike trip to Lahaul Spiti

There is a special pleasure in riding bikes on the off-beaten tracks of the Himalayas; it’s something, which only the ones who have had the chance to do so, can understand. An interesting aspect of this experience is that it is not solely about riding bikes on the rugged, treacherous roads but beholding nature’s beauty that this region has been endowed with. Another interesting advantage, if you like to say it, with motorbiking in the Himalayas is that it gives one the opportunity to explore even those places, where it is difficult to reach with a Jeep ride. These are the areas, which are located at a higher altitude. This is one of the reasons why enthusiasts enjoy exploring the regions of Ladakh, Kinnaur, and Lahaul and Spiti on their motorbikes. Besides sightseeing, it also gives them enough opportunity to halt at several places and enjoy the warm hospitality of the locals.

Motorbiking in the Himalayas gives one an opportunity of a lifetime and that is the chance to drive through some of the highest motorable roads and passes in the world. One such route starts from Manali that leads to the picturesque Rohtang Pass, which lies at an approximate altitude of 3980 m above sea level. This pass serves as the gateway to the arid region of Leh and Ladakh. Another such route starts from Shimla that leads to regions of Kinnaur and Spiti. And to reach these places, the bikers get the chance to drive through the mesmerising Kunzum Pass.

There are many motorbike tours on offer in the Himalayas that range from 17 days to even about 60 days. So, if one has the will, then he or she can make the most of the motorbiking expedition in the Himalayas. But this is not only limited to India. Similar experiences can be enjoyed in the Himalayan countries of Nepal and Bhutan as well, especially in the Kathmandu and Pokhara valley areas as well as the wild regions of Nepal.

Admiring the Beauty of the Himalayas on a Cycle Another way to adventure travel in the Himalayas is to hop on a cycle and enjoy the passing vistas. In the Himalayas, cycling involves travelling by bus and walking as well. During their cycle expedition in these mountains, there would come many sections of the journey, where one has to mount the cycle onto a bus to reach a point from where cycling can be done. For instance, the roads leading from Chandigarh to Manali or Kathgodam to Nainital or Kalka to Shimla keep becoming steep every kilometre and add to that the heavy car and bus traffic; this gives no pleasure to the cyclist. It is to be noted that the main trunk roads that enter the Himalayan region are not at all suitable for recreational cyclists; and more than the suitability factor, it can be unpleasant and dangerous.

Cycling in mountains

The real joyous experience of cycling in the Himalayan valleys is enjoyed on the less-frequented roads. There is a plethora of choices when it comes to picking out destinations for cycling in the Himalayas, but one stands out among them is Ladakh. The Indian Himalayan region offers a range of light and introductory cycling challenges, which includes passing through some age-old trade routes as well.

For beginners, cycling in the Terai forests, especially along the foothills of Nainital can be a wonderful experience; it is not physically taxing. This journey can begin from Thakurdwara and continue up to Ramnagar village, which lies on the outskirts of the Corbett National Park. Ranikhet, another picturesque destination in Uttarakhand, is a paradise for cycling enthusiasts. The road that goes downhill for about 20 km till Kosi is perfect to enjoy cycling and admire the sceneries all along. The state of Himachal Pradesh too has some wonderful areas for mountain cycling . Riding on the Shimla-Kalka road can be fun, especially by starting the journey from Kumarhatti. Then there is a link road, which runs through a beautiful pine forest, falling and rising till one reaches the small town of Sarahan. The route from Sarahan to Nahan is also excellent with the road passing through dark forests, which usually remains traffic free.

However to enjoy cycling in the best possible manner in the Himalayas, one’s choice of a cycle has to be spot on. From cycles with sporty trims for superior lightness to ones with spring suspensions for a cushion against bumpy roads to ones with deep and broad-threaded tyres for better grip on mountain roads; the options are plenty. However, the most important feature the cycle must possess is multi-speed gears, which come in handy to comfortably deal with steep climbs and slopes of the mountain roads.

Jeep Rides Motorbiking and cycling in the Himalayas offer a lot of thrills, but so does the excellent Jeep rides. Ranging from short tours to long ones, the adrenaline-pumping experience of driving through the mountain valleys on the rugged roads, especially where one finds protruding mountains rock on one side and deep valleys on the other, is simply awe-inspiring. One of the most fantastic Jeep rides in the Himalayas can be experienced by driving to the scenic Pangong Tso Lake in Ladakh. From Chang La Pass, it takes about 4 hours to reach here. This drive can be really arduous but at the same time, it is totally exhilarating.

The gate to Ki Monastery

Another such exciting drive can be enjoyed by heading to Tso Moriri Lake from Leh. This Jeep tour to Tso Moriri generally follows a particular itinerary, which means, passing through Karu, Upshi, Kere, Chumathang and Sumdo along the way to finally reach Korzok. From there, the tour continues towards the Leh-Manali highway, passing the Tso Kar Lake and the quaint villages of Thukse on the way.

Jeep drives in the Garhwal and Kumaon hills of the state of Uttarakhand and Spiti Valley have also been a favourite of many enthusiasts over the years.

Self-Drives If you ask most of the adventure junkies, they will tell you that there isn’t anything better than self-driving in the Himalayas , especially to destinations like Leh-Ladakh and Spiti Valley. Sitting ideal in a Jeep or taxi driven by chauffer is something a lot of people are not fond of. The pleasure of self-drive in the valleys of Himalayas has a special charm and excitement, which only a handful of enthusiasts have experienced so far. But this might not be feasible for someone living in the southern, eastern, western or central part of India; even for those living in the northern states, it is not an easy decision to make.

Self-drive in Ladakh

Also, transport companies located in the Himalayan states do not entertain such requests, and even if they do, the price quoted is something that simply quashes all the zeal. However, in recent years, a few companies have started renting out their 4 wheelers to those interested in self-drive expeditions in the Himalayas; and to be honest, it is something that any Himalayan enthusiast will love to do.

Now, having gone through this list, I am sure you would have made up your mind as to which option suits your sensibility, dare devilness and enthusiasm the best. Then, go ahead and make your plans for a trip to the mighty Himalayan Mountains. Do it! You will never regret your decision of doing so!

14 Tips for Planning a Trip to the Indian Himalayas

Trip to Himalayas

The most extensive of all mountain ranges, the Himalayas stretches across the lands of Pakistan, India , Bhutan, Nepal and eastern China. Home to the highest peaks on the planet, it represents the courageous and vivacious spirit of these countries’ nomadic tribes. If you’re planning a trip to the Indian Himalayas, these are the things you need to keep in mind.

Check your timings.

The Himalayas is made up of dramatic topography, lush valleys and extensive cold deserts that stretch on for miles. Whether you’re planning a trip to India’s little Tibet, Ladakh or the last Shangri-la, Bhutan; the ideal time to explore the Himalayas is from mid-May to mid-September. However, the peak trekking season in the Indian Himalayas goes from March to June.

Map an itinerary

The popular trek routes in the Himalayas are well defined but for those who seek off-the-grid adventure, do your research well and check with the local authorities before venturing into the unknown.

Stop and breathe

Mountains aren’t going to expire anytime soon but if you keep going without acclimatizing to the fluctuating weather conditions then you will.

Hire a guide

Don’t rely on your Google navigation and GPS tracking, sometimes even the best-planned itineraries fail you. If you’re going for an unexplored route, deeper into the dense ranges of the Himalayas then hire a local guide to make the best of it.

Local guide

Get your permits

There are certain restricted routes in the Himalayas that require a local authority permit to cross from one village to another. Make sure you get your permits for an uninterrupted adventure.

Set a budget

Like any other mountain range, the Himalayas have set rules for every trail that is easy, moderate and difficult. The most difficult trails will be the most expensive and depending on the elevation scale the budget drops from moderate to easy.

Budget your trip

Cash over plastic money

There are still certain villages around these parts where ATM machines don’t work. The small food joints and accommodations only accept cash transactions. Make sure you have enough cash to sustain the entire trip.

Pack strategically

During summers, the temperature can drop to as low as 5 degree Celsius and during winter it can dip to -30 to -35 degree Celsius. It is vital that you pack your clothing and equipment according to the altitude.

What to pack?

Weight management is a tricky business when you’re out on a mountain expedition. Here’s what you should pack to survive unexpected Himalayan weather conditions.

Sleeping bag. Insulated and water-resistant shoes. Wind-proof jacket and an extra pair of woollen socks. Ski pants.

Pack and explore

Keep essentials handy

Aside from basic toiletries, the essential priorities change in the Himalayas. For a seamless Himalayan sojourn don’t forget items like sunglasses, toilet kit, trekking pole and power bank.

Maintain good health

This is actually the most crucial of all tips. You need to be physically, as well as mentally, fit before embarking upon a grand trip to the Himalayas. Start pumping those numbers at the gym and get a thorough medical checkup.

Store enough food

Unless you want to create a rendition of Leonardo DiCaprio’s raw Bison scene from The Revenant , fill mini zip lock bags with plenty of protein bars, ready-to-eat snacks, and packed food.

Stock food

Stay hydrated

Another basic yet extremely important tip to highlight on your trip to the Himalayas, stay hydrated.

Medicine kit

So, if you are also looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure, we have some of the best alternatives to the most sought-after Leh-Manali road trip.

Siliguri to Thimpu

Travelling all the way to Bhutan makes for a thrilling experience. You can hire a car for this trip. The distance between Siliguri to Bhutan till the border at Phuentsholing is around 157 km, which will take you around 3 hours 45 minutes, from where one will take another 2 hours to reach Thimpu. The road is well-maintained, and it’s not that difficult to find car rental agencies in Siliguri who will drive you to Bhutan. These cars need to get permits at the border to travel further than the Phuentsholing area, whereas Indians will only need an identity proof to get into Bhutan.

Delhi to Chakrata

This road trip will take approximately 5 hours. This scenic town of Uttarakhand is the right place and makes for a great holiday from Delhi. Nestled at a height of 7000 ft from above the sea level, Chakrata is an ideal getaway for those who are not interested in doing anything, but laze around and enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings. When here, you also get to indulge in various activities like trekking, skiing and much more.

Guwahati to Tawang

Before opting for this road trip, make sure you have the Inner Line Permit (ILP), which is required to enter Arunachal Pradesh by both Indians and foreigners. Also, this is going to be a long road trip and cannot be covered at one go. So, you will be required to make one or two night halts before reaching the final place. The first stop of this exciting road trip can be Tezpur, where you can halt and get enough rest before heading to Tawang. You should definitely opt for this trip to get an insight into an entirely different India.

Chandigarh to Spiti Valley

Scenic villages, unreal landscapes, and raging rivers will be greeting you throughout this adventurous road journey. As you set off for this journey, you will be surprised to see how the vista changes dramatically from rocky hills to green pines, and then opening up to spectacular landscapes. If you love road tripping, the road trip from Chandigarh to Spiti Valley should definitely feature in your travel wishlist. Go for it if you are a road person, and spread the plan for around 10 days for that great road trip!

Srinagar to Gurez Valley

Located in the high Himalayas, Gurez Valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and is truly a spectacular offbeat location. Replete with beautiful sights and majestic mountains, your drive to Gurez Valley will be a memorable one. As you head towards the valley, you feel like you have reached a hidden paradise that is situated around 120 km from Srinagar. You will drive from Srinagar to Gurez, pass through Razdan Pass, and you will be passing through some postcard-perfect villages on the way, beautiful enough to force you to make frequent pit stops. In short, you will enjoy the entire drive till it lasts.

Delhi to Munsiyari

The distance between Delhi and Munsiyari is more than 500 km, and it’s not possible to reach Munsiyari from Delhi in a day unless you are planning to to drive 15 to 16 hrs in a day. To avoid the rush and exertion, most people opt to spend a couple of nights in Kumaon, before heading to Binsar, and then reaching Munsiyari finally on the third day. Also, you can cover the distance in two days, depending on your schedule.

Famed for its quaintness and sunset-sunrise views on Panchachuli Peaks, Munsiyari offers the best views of five sister peaks and can be easily covered by road. So, if you are keen to watch a golden Himalayan sunrise, pack your bags and head to Munsiyari.

Chandigarh to Solan

One of the best ways to reach Solan via Chandigarh is via road, and it will be a trip to remember. Since Solan is situated in close vicinity of lower ranges of the Himalayas, this road trip is bound to be a treat for adventure as well as nature lovers. Travel to the Himalayas: Three Route Ideas

Last Updated on January 14, 2021

This article is perfect for those looking to travel to the Himalayas. We have drafted three route ideas – up in the Himalayas and the Golden Temple, in the Northeast and in the famous Leh and Ladakh. We have also included some suggestions for hotel accommodation for you while you are there. However, feel free to contact us for any help in planning your perfect trip to the Himalayas!

Himalayan Getaway

Table of Contents

1. Himalayas and the Golden Temple (Nature and Spirituality)

Route: amritsar – dharamshala – mirage by andretta – manali – shoja – kotgarh – shimla – kasauli – chandigarh.

This route is ideal for people wanting to experience a little bit of spirituality. You can witness the majestic mountains of the Himalayas from its foothills in Himachal Pradesh, a region filled with quaint and beautiful villages and cities.

Tours around the Himalayas

Start off your trip in Amritsar, easily accessible by flight, train and road. A must is to visit the Golden Temple – immerse yourself in Sikhism, a religion that gives. Further, the architecture and tank up on the humble Langar. Backpackers can catch a night’s rest at the fabulous Jugaadus Hostels or Akaal Residency for some privacy.

If you have some room for spending, opt for the Country Inn and Suites. If you’re looking for a more luxurious stay, the Svaasa is for you. From here, you can either catch a bus or rent a chauffeur-driven car at INR 4,000 for pretty much all connections in the hills.

Amritsar, Golden temple, religious places in India

dharamshala

We’d strongly recommend hiring a driver, both because the roads are tricky for those unfamiliar and you’re free to explore, discover and take in the view. Next, you move up to Dharamshala, home of the Dalai Lama and the adjacent McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala is a beautiful hill city that houses the exiled Tibetan government, so there’s a huge Buddhist influence there.

Backpackers can hole up at the Pink House ; those looking for a little more comfort can try Chonor House . There’s a rare treat here for the artistically inclined called the Mirage , a homestay that doubles as an artists retreat, even having a pottery wheel for you to try. If you would like to spend the extra cash, we would recommend staying at the Mirage.

Snow in India, Skiing in India

Manali is the next stop in Himachal Pradesh and one of the many foothills of the Himalayas. You can blow off some steam by just relaxing hippie style and then satiate your munchies at the numerous little adorable cafes. Rock Top Cottage Café is a great hotel choice for backpackers, a nice cozy setup. For someone looking for a more comfortable stay, Johnson’s Lodge and the pricier The Himalayan , a beautiful castle resort that won’t disappoint. Then catch a bus to Shoja, a national park that cradles a small village, making it a perfect base camp as you trek into its leafy recesses. All class differences are erased here since there’s only one decent hotel available – Banjara Camps.

Manali

Kotgarh is nationally known for its apples and widespread apple orchards. It’s utterly beautiful, whilst quaint; perfect for taking walks through apple orchards and forests. It’s quite here, but the stunning Seetalvan Orchards will make your visit here so special.

road trip en himalayan

Shimla is the largest city in Himachal Pradesh and is definitely worth a visit when travelling to the Himalayas. As the summer capital of the British Raj, this charming resort town has a strong British colonial presence. In the centre of town, traffic is banned so walking is ideal and scenic, despite the hilly conditions! For those looking to escape the heat and to experience a happy buzz within popular hill resorts, Shimla is for you.

Wrap up the trip in Kasauli, free of cars, pollution and all the associated bad vibes. Hunker down in HPTDC’s Ross Common or the elegant Seven Pines .

himalayas

2. NorthEast

Delhi – bagdogra – pelling – gangtok – darjeeling – new jagalpuri – guwhati –, shillong – kaziranga – guwahati – varanasi.

Take a leap from Delhi to Bagdogra and Bagdogra to Pelling in a single day, by both air and road respectively. There, take some time to immerse yourself in the beauty of the villages. We recommend the Daragaon Village Retreat.

himalayas

Gangtok and Darjeeling

From Pelling, take a scenic 5-hour drive to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which is full of languid icy lakes and views of the soaring Himalayas. Sikkim is definitely a beautiful area, also with a large Buddhist influence in its architecture and traditions. Additionally, you can stay at the lovely Hotel Pandim while you’re there before shifting base to Darjeeling.

The famous tea plantations from Darjeeling make a wonderful experience when travelling to the Himalayas. You can spend a couple of days learning the delicate art of picking and processing tea from the simple town that knows best. After a long day of exploring, head back to the shining wood floors and gaping bay windows of Hotel Shangri La for the night.

travel to the himalayas

From here you can hire a car to drop you off at New Jagalpuri, which is 5 hours away. There you can then catch a train to Guwahati in Assam. From ancient temples to the burgeoning wildlife, Guwahati is a great destination for this route.

When you’re tired of the history and the animals, take a quick 4-hour drive to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. Meghalaya is one of the Seven Sisters, and is nicknamed the ‘Abode of the Clouds’. We recommend exploring the manicured gardens and the waterfalls.

Here’s a more detailed look at what the Northeast has to offer, and how to go about planning your trip there.

road trip en himalayan

3. Leh-Ladakh

Delhi – leh – pangong tso – nubra valley – leh – delhi.

If you want more information on specifically Leh and Ladakh, here are some great travel routes for just this region.

This is the perfect route for someone highly interested in the mountains and landscapes but doesn’t want to grind as a backp acker.

road trip en himalayan

Once you land in Leh, make sure to give yourself some time to adjust to the drastic change in altitude, the only downside of a quick flight.

Once you’ve had your fill of the palaces and stupas, get into a jeep and take a drive through Chang-La Pass, the third-highest drivable road in the world. Come out the other end onto one of the world’s most breath-taking sights – the endless stillness of Pangong Tso Lake. With this lake and the Moriri Tso, you’ll find marvelous views of the two sister lakes.

The next day, you can set your sights 1010 ft higher at the world’s highest drivable pass – Khardung La Pass. This treacherous road will take you into the uniquely distinct Nubra Valley bordering the Himalayas. Break through the fog and onto the smooth vistas of snow, take a million photos and a quick dip in the hot sulphur springs at Panamik before heading back the way you came.

Adjectives that describe the incredible and paradisiacal Spiti Valley , a breathtaking mountainous wilderness located in the rain shadow region of the Great Himalayan range of India , nestled in Himachal Pradesh, is home to an irregular landscape crossed by the pristine and rushing Spiti River , which gushes through deep gorges and valleys.  The Valley is home to several Buddhist monasteries and stunning natural surroundings, most of which are unexplored.

MIDDLE EARTH

The name “Spiti” derives from “Piti” , meaning “Middle Earth” , as the valley is surrounded by colossal mountain ranges separating the empires of Ladakh to the north, Tibet to the east, Bushahr to the south and Kullu to the west

Spiti is often referred to as Little Tibet because it s terrain, vegetation and climate are very similar to those of Tibet. It rises to an altitude of 2,745m above sea level and is surrounded by Ladakh, Kinnaur and Kullu and Lahaul . From the latter, the Spiti Valley can be entered through Kumzum La or Kumzum Pass, which is at an altitude of 4,550 meters .

HIMALAYAS - Road trip

THE SPITI VALLEY IS NOTHING LESS THAN A LIVING MUSEUM

Wherever you look, you find art and beauty blessed by the Universe. The poetry of the land never dies and you will respect these words once you enter the Spiti landscape.

Remember, in every walk with nature, one receives much more than one seeks and so is this ‘Little Tibet’ .  It is known as the ‘Land of the Lamas’ due to the influence of Buddhist art and culture, which soothes the mind and heart .

Tabo Monastery, located here, is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site – what more could you ask for?  It has bliss, folly, radiance and glory, it is an impeccable wonderland, what are you waiting for? The mountains are calling you and you should listen to them.

A practical guide to hiking the Himalayas

It's possible to experience the majesty of the Himalayas without breaking a sweat: Uttarakhand's Kumaon Hills offer routes for beginners, bringing rare birdlife, high-altitude views and remote villages into reach.

When should I go?

The peak hiking seasons in Nepal and Bhutan are February to March and October to November, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. In the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, March to April and September to October offer the best weather without excessive heat. In most areas, views vanish during the rainy monsoon season (June to September). Trekking in deep winter (December to February) can be a bitterly cold experience, best left to accustomed hikers.

What clothes should I bring?

Temperatures drop quickly as you gain altitude, but you’ll work up a sweat while hiking, so bring layers that you can take off and put on again, as needed. Thermal underwear, lightweight trousers, fleece tops and a down jacket for cold nights are core pieces of kit.

What should I wear on my feet?

Some people trek in walking or trail-running shoes, but hiking boots will give your ankles more support. Use quick-drying socks and dry out your boots if they get wet to reduce the chance of blisters. Break in any new footwear before you hit the trails, too, and use hiking poles to reduce the impact on your knees.

Do I have to carry all my own gear?

Many trekkers do, but it’s easy to hire porters or yaks and packhorses at trailheads to carry your bags. Porter-guides (who guide trekkers and also help carry bags) charge from US$20 (£15) per day, and usually speak some English. On an organised trek, you may be able to hike with just your camera and water bottle or a light day pack.   Do I need a sleeping bag? Himalayan teahouses provide thin mattresses and blankets, but rooms are rarely heated, and a quality sleeping bag will help ensure a cosy night’s sleep. A ‘four season’ rating is best for high-altitude routes.

Should I buy bottled water on the trails?

The Himalayas are strewn with empty plastic bottles, left behind by irresponsible trekkers. Instead, bring a water bottle and purification tablets, or a portable water filter, to purify water as you go from the rivers that snake between high passes. Is altitude sickness a problem? And if so, how can I counteract the effects? Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a risk on any route that climbs above 2,500m. To combat it, limit your rate of ascent, taking regular rest days to acclimatise. Diamox (Acetazolamide) tablets can also reduce mild symptoms such as headaches, but if you experience severe symptoms, including nausea, dizziness or confusion, descend immediately — AMS can be fatal.

Will I need to get a trekking permit to hike in the Himalayas?

To visit Bhutan, you’ll need to arrange an organised tour through a licensed travel company; the overall price will include visa fees, obligatory daily tourist fees, and most of your costs, including for treks. In Nepal, you’ll need to arrange a guide through a local trekking agency and pay for a Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal card ( taan.org.np ). There are fees to enter conservation areas, including Sagarmatha National Park on the Everest Base Camp trail, and permits are needed to trek through border regions such as Mustang and Dolpo.

Himalayan Motorcycle Tours

This is a non-profit initiative because we only charge the cost incurred in managing the arrangement with some nominal profit added to it which goes to the education of the poor kids and to an old age home in spiti valley.

We do not do it to earn something from this, because this is not our business. We just do it for our passion to ride and to make others see this exceptional place and these rides help to change the lives of the kids with education and provide ration kits and essential items to the elderly vulnerables in the remote himalayas. We can’t change the whole world but we can certainly make some lives better.

By profession, I am a software engineer and CEO of a software company in India. Checkout the organizer’s facebook profile – Rahul Yadav

10-Day Road Trip to Adi Kailash & Om Parvat (Adi Kailash Yatra)

10-Day Road Trip to Adi Kailash & Om Parvat (Adi Kailash Yatra)

I was intrigued by the idea of traveling to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat as there’s hardly any information about it online. It is one of the few regions in Uttarakhand that is still untouched. Going on an Adi Kailash road trip was unlike anything else.

But of course, it comes with its own set of challenges.

Little did we anticipate encountering not one, but two landslides along the way, testing our resilience. Despite the setbacks, we reveled in the beauty of untouched landscapes and forged unforgettable memories, reaffirming that true exploration lies beyond the beaten path.

While it’s possible to do this road trip on your own, you need to obtain permits and tackle landslides. So, it’s best to go with a self-drive road trip company like Chasing Sunsets . They partnered with Planet Way Round, their Himalayan road trip partner to make this epic trip happen.

Prefer to watch a video? I’ve got you covered 🙂

Here is a rough itinerary of our 10-day Adi Kailash road trip to give you an idea of what it’s like.

Adi Kailash Road Trip Itinerary (Delhi – Delhi)

This road trip is popularly known as Adi Kailash Yatra and is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus.

Day 1: Delhi to Haldwani

I landed in Delhi in the morning at around 8:30 AM. I met Rohit from Chasing Sunsets here and we left for Haldwani.

This was an easy journey through good roads and we reached Haldwani in the evening.

Distance: 292km (6 hours)

Stay: Hotel North House, Haldwani

north house haldwani

Day 2: Haldwani to Chaukori

sunset on the way from Haldwani to Chaukori

This is where we met the rest of the group. We joined a convoy of 11 cars and we left Haldwani in the morning on our way to Chaukori.

Distance: 200kms (7 hours)

Interesting landmarks: Bhimtal Lake, Kainchi Dham (Neem Karoli Baba Ashram)

Stay: Neelgagan Resort, Chaukori

Day 3: Chaukori to Dharchula

Morning View of Nanda Devi Peak and other mountains from Neelgagan resort

Distance: 100kms (4 hours)

Interesting landmarks: Nepal – India viewpoint

Stay: KMVN Guest House, Dharchula

Day 4: Dharchula to Darma Valley

This is one of the most scenic journeys that you will encounter during this trip – and this makes it to my list of top road trips in India. Going on a road trip through the scenic valleys of Uttarakhand is one of my favourite moments on this Adi Kailash road trip.

Our journey led us through towering rock formations, cascading streams, majestic waterfalls, and an expanse of lush, vibrant green landscapes, leaving us in awe of the breathtaking beauty that unfolded before our very eyes. A mesmerizing tapestry of nature’s wonders! Truly a sight to behold.

Just after Dharchula is when you lose your network. Don’t expect to have a network until you get back to Dharchula which is about 4 days later.

View of the mountains surrounded by clouds in darma valley dugtu village

Distance: 56kms (4 hours)

Interesting landmarks: The entire journey to Darma Valley is something to look out for! Panchachuli Peaks are a group of five snow-capped Himalayan peaks

Stay: Bluesheep Homestay, Dugtu Village (From this homestay, you can see the majestic Panchachuli peaks!)

Day 5: Darma Valley

darma valley uttarakhand

From Dugtu village in Darma Valley, you can go on a short 7km hike to get a clear view of Panchachuli peaks – a group of five snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

This is part of the popular hiking route that goes all the way to Panchachuli Base Camp (4260m).

According to Hindu mythology, Panchachuli is where the Pandavas had their last meal before they began their heavenly abode.

The hiking route is filled with beautiful sights: lush meadows covered in colorful flowers, quaint villages with a rustic charm, and magnificent Himalayan birds gracing the skies, making it a pleasant and scenic hike.

Stay: Bluesheep Homestay

Day 6: Darma Valley to Vyas Valley

The journey from Darma valley to vyas valley is also very scenic and you’ll be in awe of the towering mammoth rocks, the abundant greenery, the gushing waterfalls while traversing along the Kali river.

You will witness mountain peaks and small hamlets across the Kali river on the Nepal side.

darma valley to vyas valley

Distance: 92kms (6 hours)

Stay: Athithi Vyas Homestay, Nabi village (Contact Yug: 8755452581)

Day 7: Vyas Valley

Morning view of the mountaints from athithi vyas homestay, Nabi village

Today is when you visit Adi Kailash.

As you are probably aware, this is en route to Manas Sarovar Yatra – a popular pilgrimage route among Hindus. Adi Kailash also has a special significance in Hindu mythology. It is known to be a meditation spot for Goddess Parvati and also where she created Lord Ganesha.

You can hike to Gauri Kund and Parvati Kund from here.

Go check out the villages around here if you have time. They offer an interesting perspective into what it’s like to live here. We went to Kong Rong village which is about a 20-minute walk from the homestay.

adi kailash mandir - adi kailash yatra is a popular pilgrimage place for Hindus

Interesting landmarks: Adi Kailash

Day 8: Vyas Valley to Dharchula

Sheshnag parvat surrounded by clouds on day 8 of our Adi Kailash road trip

From Nabi village to Om Parvat is about an hour-long journey. There’s a checkpoint along the way where you need to show the permits. Depending on whether it’s snowing or sunny, the visibility of Om Parvat might differ.

We were not able to spot the Om-shaped peak of Om Parvat because of bad visibility.

According to Shiv Puran which centers around Hindu God Shiva, there are 7 places where you could spot Om in Kalyug. So far, we have only witnessed one – and that is in Om Parvat.

From Parvat, head back to Dharchula. You will finally be able to access the mobile network as you approach Dharchula.

Distance: 108kms (7 hours)

Interesting landmarks: Om Parvat

Stay: KMVN Guesthouse, Dharchula

Day 9: Dharchula to Pittoragarh

This is a short road journey and an easy one.

Distance: 92kms (3 hours)

Interesting Landmarks: Restaurant with a view of the entire town of Pittoragarh

Stay: KMVN Guesthouse

Day 10: Pittoragarh to Delhi

Start the day early from Pittoragarh because it’s a long journey from Pittoragarh to Delhi.

Distance: 500kms (10 hours)

However, if you have more time, then split the journey between 2 days which makes it a little more pleasant. Head to Haldwani from Pittoragarh (185 km, 5 hours 30 minutes) on the first day and then head to Delhi from Haldwani (290 km, 5 hours 40 minutes).

Things to Keep in Mind on your road trip to Darma Valley & Vyas Valley

  • Please note that this area requires an inner line permit. The permit is available from the SDM office at Dharchula. Documents required for a permit – Aadhar Card and Voter’s ID. But we didn’t personally procure permits – all our permits were handled by Planet Way Round.
  • You won’t be able to access the mobile network in Darma Valley & Vyas Valley. So make sure to inform your friends and family well in advance when you are in Dharchula that you won’t have a mobile network for at least 4 days.
  • Make sure to keep 2 days as a buffer as there could be delays due to landslides or road construction in this region.
  • This region doesn’t have public transport, so either you can drive or ride on your own or opt for a road trip company for this trip. With safety in mind, it’s best to go with a reliable road trip company as these are mostly off-roading experiences inside the valleys.
  • Only 4*4 are preferred for this trip.

In conclusion, the Adi Kailash road trip is a journey that promises not just scenic beauty but also a profound spiritual experience. It takes you through breathtaking landscapes and ancient pilgrimage sites, leaving you with lasting memories and a deep connection to the Himalayas. Embarking on this adventure is a transformative experience that will tug at your heartstrings long after you finish the trip.

“The most adventurous drive”

The most adventurous drive through snow-covered mountains in Spiti taking us to Kunzum La in peak winters with a 4-year-old child would’ve been no fun without Punit and the entire La Himalaya team. Kudos to the team for making us feel so safe that we miss no element of fun even while we were threading slow with the snow chains on. Vision, Passion, dedication and true love for the mountains is what we call La Himalaya.

Day 1: Janjehli

On the first day of our Trans Himalayan Drive road trip, you’d drive from your home city to Janjehli, a group of hamlets in the pristine and thickly forested Seraj valley of Himachal Pradesh.

Day 2: Shikari Devi drive

Day 2 of the Trans Himalayan Drive is dedicated to exploring the prominent places in and around Janjehli. After breakfast, we’ll hit the road again and head towards, Shikari Devi, a temple dedicated to goddess Shikari and the highest peak (at 3359 meters) in Mandi district.

Another place worth visiting is Bulah meadows, an emerald green carpet of Himalayan meadows surrounded by Deodar forest. This place is located en route to Shikari Devi.

Day 3: Jispa, Lahaul

On Day 3, we’ll finally be able to experience the revelation of the majestic sweep of the Trans-Himalayan ranges. For this 260+ kilometres long haul drive, we’ll be taking the Janjehli-Chailchowk-Nerchowk connecting road to reach National Highway 3 near Pandoh Dam (Mandi-Manali section). Barring a few road sections near Pandoh dam and Kullu, the road conditions on Pandoh-Jispa stretch is okay.

Day 4: Jispa – Darcha – Shinku-La – Udaipur

Day 4 will be the most unforgettable leg of our Trans-Himalayan Drive expedition. On this Jispa-Darcha-Shinkula Pass drive, we’ll be tackling a significant altitude gain, starting at 3,200 meters in Jispa and climbing to the 5,091 meters-high trans-Himalayan pass of Shinku La (also called Shingo La). While the distance from Jispa to Shinku La is less than 50 kilometers, be prepared for driving on challenging road conditions. Due to ongoing road construction, the roads near the pass are prone to breaks and potholes, and the thin air at high altitudes can be tiring to you if you have not driven through high-altitude regions of the Himalayas before.

Once we conquer the summit of the pass, we’ll head back to Jispa and then Udaipur. This round trip on Day 4 will cover approximately 170 kilometers and take an estimated 6-7 hours to complete.

Day 5: Exploring Udaipur

After driving through difficult terrain and high-altitude climes of Shinku-La Pass, you just need a rest day. So day 5 is going to be easy, and we’ll rejuvenate and unwind ourselves by taking short walks by the calm waters of Chandrabhaga River.

We will explore Udaipur and visit the much-revered Trilokinath Temple. Next, we’ll drive to Miyar Valley and return to our campsite by the river Chenab.

Day 6: Udaipur – Sural Bhatori

Sural Bhatori is a secluded village in the Pangi Valley of Chamba. The fifth day features a tiring, long drive that’s only for those who love adventure, as we’ll traverse challenging terrains with rough roads.

After breakfast, we will leave for Chenab Valley to venture into the remoteness of Killar village. Soak in some breathtaking views that can’t be described in words, but only be cherished.

After spending some time at Killar, we continue to drive towards Sural Bhatori. Pangi is a subdivision of district Chamba, and Killar is the headquarters. We will reach Sural Bhatori by evening and will stay at a lovely campsite by “Hospitality on the Move by Tethys Himalaya”.

After this nerve-wracking drive, Day 6 definitely calls for rest.

Day 7: Sural Bhatori Waterfall

After this nerve-wracking drive, the next day certainly calls for rest. So the next day we cover some unexplored locations around Sural Bhatori. This beautiful valley offers numerous possibilities for day hikes. We will spend some quality time by a stunning waterfall, which has a height of approximately 100 meters. We reach the campsite by evening and stay the night.

Day 8. Dalhousie

After soaking in the stunning views of lush greenery and pristine streams of Sural Bhatori, we’ll be adequately rested and refreshed for 200+ km of gruelling drive from Sural Bhatori to Dalhousie.

Post breakfast, we drive to Sach Pass, aptly named the ‘big daddy of all mountain passes’. The journey to Sach Pass is something that cannot be put into words, something unforgettable, something that will go down as the most cherished experience of our lifetime, something that we can barely realize having made it through.

Sach Pass is one of the most difficult passes to drive through in North India. At an altitude of 4500 meters, it runs over the Pir Panjal Mountain ranges. The pass connects Dalhousie with Chamba and Pangi Valley.

This mountain pass is famous among travelers and adventure seekers. The pass is also a famous trekking point from Dalhousie. The panoramic views of the valley and snow-clad mountains from the pass are a never-seen-before experience.

After Sach Pass, the road conditions are almost the same till Tissa. From Tissa, the journey resumes on a familiar roadway.

Day 9. Departure

Our home cities would be our destination after seven days of driving through the most remote parts of Himachal Pradesh. After breakfast, we’ll hit the road.

Live Your Dream Drive Itinerary

Day 1: narkanda.

Travelling to Narkanda is now a breeze, since the Kalka-Shimla road was upgraded into a four-lane expressway. Barring traffic congestion in Shimla city, the journey offers spectacular views of the valleys of the lesser Himalayas.

Narkanda is an archetypal Himalayan hill town located amidst the thick Deodar cedar forest. Upon arrival, the team at Tethys Resort will greet and introduce you to our team. We are sure the stunning views of the Deodar forest and the lush apple orchards will transport you to another world.

In the evening, the soothing aroma and warmth of the bonfire will make the exhaustion of the long drive vanish instantly. We promise you a one-of-a-kind experience with us after a delectable dinner!

Day 2 Pabbar Valley

The drive from Narkanda to Rohru town of Pabbar valley is a scenic — though long, winding and weary drive with steep down-slopes and upward gradients. A journey that takes you through the primeval and dense forests of Baghi and Sungri. We’ll be travelling through time, as the Narkanda-Sungri road section falls under the British-era Old Hindustan-Tibet Road. The drive distance is about 62 kilometers, and it takes about 3 hours to reach our campsite, La-Himalaya camps right by the side of the Pabbar River.

Day 3: Drive to Chanshal Pass

Buckle up wanderlusters, because Day 3 is all about chasing epic views and capturing memories. We’ll be trading the bustle of the Rohru town for the breathtaking heights of the Chanshal Pass — the highest peak in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh.

This 4,520 meters high of pure mountain majesty connects Rohru town to the charming twin villages of Dodra and Kwar. On one side, the pass offers some of the best views of the legendary Swargarohini peak of the Garhwal Himalayas. On the other, cascading valleys of the lower Himalayas stretch out like a green velvet carpet waiting for any adventuring soul.

The drive distance (between our campsite and the pass) is about 50 km, and it takes about 2 hours to reach the Chanshal Pass summit.

Day 4 Pabbar Valley to Janjehli/Sojha

The first leg of the journey is on Rohru-Sungri-Rampur Bushahr. The Road conditions are okay, but some sections are narrow, winding, and have steep up/down gradients. The stretch takes about 3 hours to cover the distance of 70 km.

In the second leg of our day 4 drive, we’ll be driving on National Highway 5 and National Highway 305, from Taklech to Sainj Chowk on NH5 and Sainj Chowk to Shoja on NH305. The second leg of day #4 will take approximately 4 hours to cover the 100 km distance. Depending upon the availability of the hotels, we’d book the stay in either Sojha or Janjehli.

Day 5 Janjehli/Sojha Local Sightseeing

Sojha village is a haven for backpackers and road-trippers seeking solace and adventure in equal measure. Serolsar Lake, Jalori Pass, Raghupur Fort, and Jibhi Waterfall are the places for our day excursions. In Janjehli, we can drive to Shikari Mata Temple and camp on the nearby meadows.

The drive distance is about 100 kilometers, and it takes about 5 hours to reach our campsite—located by the Pabbar river.

Day 3: Pabbar -Chanshal Pass – Pabbar

This pass also forms a drainage divide between Rupin river of Garhwal, Uttarakhand and Pabbar river of Himachal Pradesh. The pass offers a panoramic view of the peaks of Garhwal Himalayas (like Swargarohini) on one side and wide-angle view of cascaded valleys of lesser Himalayas on the other. On a clear day, peaks as far as Kinnaur and Spiti valley are visible from this pass.

The drive from Daranghati to Narkanda as scenic (and equally challenging) as our Day 4 drive. We’d be negotiating near infinite hairpin bends, steep down-slopes and upward gradients. Such drives are best done in all-wheel drive powered vehicles.

Day : Prem Nagar

Drive back to our basecamp, Farmville by Tethys at Prem Nagar.

Glamping Experience in the Himalayas Itinerary

Day 1: prem nagar.

On the first day of this glamping road trip, drive from your home city to Farmville by Tethys at Prem Nagar, just a 15 minutes drive from Kumarhatti town (on Chandigarh-Shimla highway). This property offers free private parking and free Wi-Fi service.

Day 2 & 3: Pabbar valley sightseeing and drive to Chanshal Pass

The day 2 is dedicated to exploring the Pabbar valley. The valley is named after Pabbar river — a right side tributary of the Tons river, which is a right side tributary of river Yamuna.

Some most bucket-listed places of the day 2 includes:

Hatkoti village and temple : Hatkoti is a small village located by the Pabbar river. The village has become synonymous with Hateshwari Durga Mata temple. The temple is built in Pyramidal root style of architecture. Inside the temple, there is a shrine dedicated to lord Shiva and 5 shrines believed to be built by the Pandavas.

Chirgaon : Famous for trout fishing and angling, this small town is less than 15 minutes drive away from Rohru.

Larot village: A scenic village on Chirgaon – Chanshal pass route.

Summerkot fort : Located on a hillock by the Summerkot village, this is the oldest temple fort of Pabbar valley. It is built in indigenous Kath-kuni architecture. Kot means a castle in the vernacular language of this region.

Drive over Bakhirna Bridge: This recently opened bridge connects right bank of river Pabbar to its left bank.

Chanshal Pass (4520 m high above mean sea level):   This pass forms a drainage divide between Rupin river of Garhwal, Uttarakhand and Pabbar river of Himachal Pradesh. The pass off a panoramic view of the peaks of Garhwal Himalayas (like Swargarohini) on one side and wide-angle view of cascaded valleys of lesser Himalayas on the other. On a clear day, peaks of  as far as Kinnaur and Spiti valley are visible from this pass.

Day 4: Daranghati wildlife sanctuary drive

Daranghati was designated by the government of Himachal Pradesh as wildlife sanctuary in 1999.  Its 171 km square area hosts some spectacular places like Sharai Koti Temple, Mural Danda, Daranghati peak and dense and biodiversity rich forest expanses.

After breakfast, we set off on the most strenuous (but thrilling) drive of our itinerary.

The day is a test of your driving skills on broken and unpaved road stretches with many steep climbs and sheer descends.

But all this is worth the mesmerizing views that await us. We’d also be covering some parts of the legendary Old Hindustan-Tibet Road. The place is famous for sightings of the western tragopan.

In the evening, we will enjoy a bonfire under the stars and constellations with the 360-degree view from a hilltop in the vicinity of Daranghati peak.  Overnight stay in cozy abodes of glamping tents set-up by Lahimalaya.

Day 5: Narkanda

Drive back to our base camp, i.e., Farmville stay by Tethys via Shimla and Kumarhatti.

Narkanda is snuggled in a thick alpine forest of the lesser Himalayas, about 60 km far from Shimla. Relatively speaking, a few people plan to visit or know this place. For most of the tourists, it is just a halting-place between Shimla and Sarahan. On this road trip, you would realize why at least two days should be spent here.

Day 2: BAGA SARAHAN

The drive is easy and smooth until you reach Dutt Nagar, a small town on the left bank of the Sutlej River, about 13 km before Rampur Bushehr. After dinner, we’d call it a day.

Drive is easy and beautiful until Dutt Nagar – a small town located on the left bank of Sutlej River on NH05 near Rampur Bushehr. A single lane road connects Duttnagar to Baga Sarahan.
