Organized by Philadelphia comedian Moses the Comic and Haverford College professor of religion Guangtian Ha, The Muslim Kings of Comedy is a groundbreaking show with a lineup featuring the top international Muslim comedians in the halal industry: Preacher Moss who created the “Allah Made Me Funny” comedy tour that sold over one million dollars in ticket sales; Omar Regan founder of the first Muslim film production company ‘Halalywood’; Azeem Muhammad from BET’s Comic View; and Moses The Comic, founder of ‘Let My People Laugh Productions,’ who has performed with Kevin Hart, Snoop Dogg and many more. These four comedy pioneers have never been together on the same show, so this is going to be a treat. The show also stars one of the biggest social media comediennes and influencers, the hilarious Nadirah Pierre and the reigning 'Princess Of Philadelphia Comedy' Shanell Renee, who has toured the country performing with Wanda Sykes, Sommore, Black Thought, and many more.

One half of Philadelphia's own 'Kindred The Family Soul', DJ DK aka Fatin Dantzler will be spinning the tunes at the Muslim Kings Of Comedy event. Please join us!

Tickets are $25-$30 and can be purchased directly from the World Cafe Live website . A limited number of free show tickets are available for the Tri-College community. To reserve your ticket, please contact Hurford Center Associate Director James Weissinger at jweissin [at] haverford.edu .

Until further notice, all World Cafe Live guests will be required to show proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination for entry to the venue. Negative tests will not be accepted at this time. Additionally, all guests will be required to wear a face mask throughout the building except while actively eating or drinking. All WCL staff members will be fully vaccinated and masked at all times.

World Cafe Live’s main entrance is located at 3025 Walnut St. Philadelphia, PA 19104. The venue is conveniently located in the University City District of Philadelphia, right off of I-76W (Exit 345) and just a few blocks south of Philadelphia’s 30th Station, which includes services from Amtrak, NJ Transit, and SEPTA.   There is plenty of metered parking available within walking distance of the venue on Walnut St, Lower Walnut St, and 31st St. There are also several flat rate public parking lots nearby. For evenings and weekends after 5pm, we recommend FMC Tower . For weekdays, try Penn Park or LAZ Parking .   All levels of the venue are accessible by World Cafe Live’s central elevator. If you are using a wheelchair or mobility device, we recommend entering through the lower level on 31st Street. Please feel free to reach out ahead of time with any needs so that we can best accommodate you.

If you travel with a personal care attendant (PCA), the PCA will receive a complimentary ticket with accompanying purchase. All requests for a PCA ticket must be made at the time of purchase by calling 215-222-1400 or emailing TicketingStaff [at] worldcafelive.com .

Artists & Presenters

In November of 1999 Omar Regan jumped on stage as a stand-up comic in local Detroit Comedy Clubs and soon after auditioned and was awarded the leading role in a Regional Ford Focus Commercial and knew acting was his passion, all in the same year Regan left Detroit for Hollywood.

In 2001 Regan was offered and accepted the role as Double for Chris Tucker in the hit movie “Rush Hour 2”. In 2005 Regan was on the main stage at The World-Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood and got the attention of talent scouts, and soon after he appeared on E!’s reality series, “Fight for Fame,” and won a theatrical contract with Acme Talent Agency.

Omar Regan founded the first Muslim film production company “Halalywood” and is now an internationally known Muslim Comedian, writer, actor and producer winning over audiences as far as England, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Australia, China, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and more. He has appeared in films alongside Katt Williams, Evan Ross, Omari Hardwick and Kerry Washington to name a few. Regan uses entertainment and humor to promote tolerance, diversity, and to build bridges across racial, religious, and social divides. As an African American Muslim entertainer, Omar Regan offers a unique perspective on everyday life and his mission statement is an acronym of his last name: Reflect Excellence Gratitude and Nur (Light) REGAN.

Preacher Moss

Groundbreaking and pioneering entertainer Preacher Moss has been called the “Godfather of Muslim Comedy”. He is known as the founder of the sell-out “Allah Made Me Funny” official Muslim comedy tour which paved the way for comedians around the world and toured 30 U.S. cities during its first year domestically and internationally in Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

His ‘End of Racism’ Comedy and Lecture tour was voted “Best Diversity Act” on college campuses and is recognized as an industry standard for being a tough, honest, and brilliantly funny voice on the conversation of race, diversity, and understanding in the world. Preacher’s unique lecture style has been described as “smooth, intelligent, and thought provoking”, as his “seriously funny” message simultaneously occupies two spaces of laughter and intellectual engagement at the same time. Moss is a master thinker, craftsman, and storyteller.

As a writer for Hollywood heavyweights like Damon Wayans, George Lopez, and Darrell Hammond on Saturday Night Live, Preacher Moss had proven his value across many levels of stand-up, activism, and community empowerment. He continues to tour nationally selling out shows everywhere he goes.

Azeem Muhammad

Azeem, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, began his comedy career in 1999 at the age of 26 while working at a rehabilitation center for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 2005, Azeem made his network television debut on “Comic View”, which brought him to the attention of many clubs and colleges throughout the United States. Since then, for over twenty years Azeem’s comedy has brought laughter to millions of people worldwide. Whether across stage, colleges, corporate events or religious functions, the result is always the same: drop-dead funny !

In 2005, Azeem was the recipient of the MPAC Image Award, for his stand-up performance on the critically acclaimed ‘ Allah Made Me Funny: Official Muslim Comedy Tour ’, which provided an opportunity for a healthy dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims; drawing the attention of The Daily Show w/ Jon Stewart. His ability to build bridges across gender, ethnicity, and religious lines has earned him the title of “holistic healer through humor” because of his ability to intertwine touchy subjects in a politically correct society with charismatic candor.

Azeems standout performances have taken him to over 5 continents, 37 countries, and a favorite on the seven seas; performing onboard Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line ships. His first full comedy CD “ I’m Just Serious ” was released in 2010, and his first DVD “ Live & Unfiltered ” was released in 2015. Azeem can be heard every week on his podcast “ I’m Just Serious ” on iTunes and Stitcher Radio.

Moses The Comic

Moses The Comic is a seasoned international Muslim comedian, writer and actor with a diverse range of innovative concepts who began his comedy career in Philadelphia at the world famous Laff-House. Since then, Moses has performed all over the world with his routine bridging the gap between Muslims & Non-Muslims from Caroline's on Broadway, The Hollywood Improv, The Laugh Factory, Uptown Comedy Corner, Jokes & Notes & many more. Moses has toured and performed domestic and internationally with superstar entertainers Kevin Hart, Michael Blackson, Steve Harvey, George Wallace, Charlie Murphy, Kelly Price, Snoop Dogg, Tommy Davidson, Deen Squad, Omar Regan, Preacher Moss, Jill Scott, Kindred The Family Soul among many others and has been featured on the BBC IPlayer and British Muslim Television Network in the UK.

Moses performed and headlined in the sold out international & domestic comedy shows "The Super Muslim Comedy Tour" which has sold out over 200 shows across six countries and has been a huge success receiving rave reviews & raised over 3 million dollars for various relief efforts worldwide. Due to the success of the tour, it won the "Fundraising Campaign of the Year" at the Muslim charity Awards in the United Kingdom.

Moses The Comic starred in a Comedy Central test pilot "Minimum Wage" and is a registered writer with the Library of Congress and a member of the 'Writers Guild East' for writing an episode of the animated show "Family Guy". Moses continues to establish content for his fan base across his various social media platforms from and Moses is currently producing a web series entitled "It's Always Sunni In Philadelphia" and can be seen performing in multi-city venues touring domestic and internationally.

Nadirah Pierre

Nadirah Pierre, often referred to as “Nadirah P” is a stand-up comedian hailing from Newark NJ. She is internationally known for her social media skits and commentary on topics ranging from marriage and relationships to current events and politics. Nadirah always maintains a sense of modesty with jokes that are entertaining but not vulgar and whether making people laugh in person or online, her purpose she says is telling the truth no matter how ugly or uncomfortable it may be. Funny, relatable, stylish and unapologetically Muslim, Nadirah is paving the way for female Muslim comedians worldwide.

Shanell Renee

Shanell Renee is a clean comedian who shares her life story with a mix of charisma, hilarity and relatability. She graduated from Philadelphia Comedy College at Helium Comedy Club and since then has performed on stages all over the country. Shanell is the winner of the "Best Female Comic Of The Year" at the 'Philadelphia Hip Hop Awards' and has been featured on Fox, Punchline Comedy Club, The Laugh Factory in Hollywood and much more.

Guangtian Ha

Guangtian Ha is a professor of religion at Haverford College. His latest book The Sound of Salvation: Voice, Gender, and the Sufi Mediascape in China is published by Columbia University Press. He is co-editor of The Contest of the Fruits (MIT 2021), a book that exposes the rich cultural and religious traditions of the Turkic Uyghur Muslims at the heart of the ancient Silk Road. He co-teaches a course titled From Malcolm X to Dave Chappelle: Humor, Comedy, and Islam in America with Moses the Comic at Haverford College.

Super Muslim Comedy Tour

The Super Muslim Comedy Tour celebrates the comedic powers of superheroes and their side-splitting performances. This year sees Esther Manito , Abdullah Afzal , Azeem Muhammad, Fatiha El-Ghorri , Kae Kurd and Omar Hamdi take the stage around 11 cities in the UK, from 6th to the 17th of November.

The tour is now in its 5th year and organised by Penny Appeal, an international humanitarian charity who works in over 30 countries worldwide. This year's tour proceeds are going to the Forgotten Children campaign which aims to get children in Senegal off the streets and into a safe environment by providing adequate access to healthcare, food and a better education.

The line-up of comedy styles and unique voices is guaranteed to bring laughter all night, ranging from Esther's comical yet consequential approach towards the female identity to Omar's observation on British multiculturism and what it means to be a comedian in an Arab community. The charity has brought seven world class comedians and each evening will consist of a range of them.

Flying in from the states, Azeem knows how to get a crowd going. He uses comedy as a way of sharing his experience as a Muslim man in America and opening up about his conversion to Islam. Underneath Londoner Fatiha's colourful hijab, is a mindful of cutting observations and engaging witticism of the life and times of a British Muslim woman - smashing stereotypes in heroic fashion! Both stand-up stars will be part of the line-up for all nationwide shows.

When asked about why the event is so important, Fatiha said, "Being a stand-up comedian is really difficult as a Muslim woman so it's nice to have inclusive events like this where everyone is welcome to come along and have a good laugh".

This year’s BIG Muslim Variety Show was in aid of our Turkey/Syria Earthquake Appeal .

Through this incredible show, you supported our brothers and sisters who are living through the devastating aftermath of the earthquakes. All proceeds from this tour have gone directly to supporting the bread factory in Reyhanli, Turkey, distributing 50,000 breads a day to those who need it most.

The impact of the earthquakes in Turkey has been nothing short of heart-breaking, with the loss of over 50,000 people. Over 9 million remain affected with many living as refugees after being forced from their homes. The situation on the ground remains critical.

Since the emergency was declared, we have been working with partners to provide vital aid in affected areas. We’re committed to continuing our work in supporting the resilient people of Turkey and Syria. We must help them as they begin the challenging journey of rebuilding what’s been lost.

Since then Moses has performed all over the world with his routine bridging the gap between Muslims & Non-Muslims from Caroline's on Broadway, The Hollywood Improv, The Laugh Factory, Uptown Comedy Corner, Jokes & Notes & many more.  Moses performed and headlined in the sold out international & domestic comedy shows "The Super Muslim Comedy Tour" which has sold out over 50 shows across six countries and has been a huge success receiving rave reviews & raised over 3 million dollars for various relief efforts worldwide. Due to the success of the tour it won the "Fundraising Campaign of the Year" at the Muslim charity Awards in the United Kingdom. 

 Moses The Comic starred in a Comedy Central Test Pilot "Minimum Wage" and is a registered writer with the Library of Congress and a member of the 'Writers Guild East' for writing an episode of the animated show "Family Guy". Moses continues to establish innovative content for his fan base across his various social media platforms from viral videos and live performances through shows he produces such as "Let My People Laugh" and "The Soul & Laughter Series", the latter of which is a full scale R&B Concert/Comedy show. Moses is currently producing a web series entitled "It's Always Sunni In Philadelphia" and can be seen performing in multi-city venues touring domestic and internationally.

Muslim Comedians Tour UK to Help People Fight Pandemic

Believing that laughter could be the medicine for people after two years of COVID-19 restrictions, the sixth UK Super Muslim Comedy Tour has kicked off in London, celebrating the powers of Muslim comedy in aid of charity.

“We weren’t able to do the tour last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and it was difficult for a lot of people because they couldn’t get their entertainment fix that they would normally get — their therapy,” the show’s host, British-Pakistani actor and comedian Abdullah Afzal told Arab News on the sidelines of the tour in Wembley.

“Also for us comedians, because we’re so used to being on stage and performing and suddenly, that was taken away from us, so all the energy that we missed out on last year, we’re bringing it forward into this year, so double the amount of energy, and hopefully we can entertain the crowd double the amount as well.”

Starting in London, the sold-out tour will head to the north and stop in 10 locations, including Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

Let my people laugh: the impact of comedy on muslim youth.

This year’s event is organized by the UK-based Muslim charity Penny Appeal.

The proceeds and funds raised will go to the international humanitarian charity’s Thirst Relief campaign, which helps to provide safe and clean drinking water for deprived communities around the world.

“We really hope people come out and really celebrate the diversity in our routine, in our stand up, and the people that come on the stage as well,” said Afzal

Now in its sixth year, the tour comes after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

“The pandemic has been really difficult, but during that time, I was doing a lot of Zoom and online gigs,” Fatiha El-Ghorri, a British comedian of Moroccan origin, said.

“It’s a completely different format, the stage is different, the audience is not in front of you, so it’s really odd when you first do it.”

Along with Afzal and El-Ghorri, the tour features other comedian such as Salman Malik, Prince Abdi, and Azeem Muhammad.

Attendants said they enjoyed the funny show.

Keyaan Hussain, 13, said he found the show really enjoyable, adding his favorite was Muhammad “because of how he interacted more with the audience.”

Ifrah Quraishi, 26, added, “I thought it was amazing, genuinely. My cheeks are hurting (because) I couldn’t stop laughing.”

“For sure I am definitely up for going to more comedy events like this (and) definitely hoping to come to the next one.”

8 Essential Muslim-Friendly Tips (From Personal Experience!) For Visiting Moscow

I’ve always dreamt of visiting the city of Moscow, ever since I first played Tetris and saw St. Basil’s cathedral on the startup screen. Russia is one of those places, the media scares the living daylights out of us and surly makes us wonder if we should even visit. Well, I'm here to tell you Russia is nothing you expect and everything you want. Moscow is an old soul steeped in history yet her modern European outlook is upbeat, with amazing culture, fashion and of course shopping.

It may be daunting to travel behind the former iron curtain but don’t worry, here are some amazing tips to help you navigate the beauty of Moscow and its many facets.

Here are our top tips for first-timers to Moscow:

1. Change your money in Russia if you can’t do it locally

In most countries, it won't be hard to change your home currency to rubles before leaving for Russia and fees may be higher but it's a matter of choice. I prefer to bring my foreign currency with me and exchange it once I get to my destination. The two easiest currencies to exchange are U.S. Dollars and Euros. The last thing you have to know is that the exchange rate at the airports is poor but that is with airports all over the world.

I suggest changing 50-100 USD/Euros or draw some Rubles at the airport via an ATM. It's best to have cash on hand for small purchases or an emergency. Once you are in the city, you will be able to find a lot of currency exchange services! The rates are pretty decent. When we were there in August 2019, we got 65 Rubles for $1 at currency exchange kiosks and 62 rubble for $1 at the bank. The kiosks open from early morning till about 11 pm. Banks open as per business hours.

Note: From here on out when stating prices I will be using American Dollars (USD) as they are the most common currency used while traveling.

We found that USD100 (~6400 rubles) went a long way and would last for a day or two if we didn’t shop. Food is similarly priced to most major cities we have visited, such as Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul. I'd advise trying to eat in less touristy spots, which will cost less but since we are all on vacation, we will spend a bit extra on food, right? An average meal at the halal restaurants we visited was 680-1000 rubles for a meal for two people. The fancier you go the more it will cost of course but your average 3-star restaurant will cost as mentioned. Touring and visiting famous sites can cost a lot but you can save by buying tickets online in advance. We did a boat tour that cost USD13 at the pier, but our online tickets cost us just USD6.50. It pays to do your research and find deals on the things you want to do and see.

#HHWT Tip: Finally, you can pay with Apple Pay and with most major credit/debit cards. You can go all day without using any cash. I prefer this form of payment as it helps me minimize the risk of my money being pickpocketed or losing my belongings.

2. Research before buying a SIM Card or Wi-Fi Router

In Moscow, like with most places these days, Wi-Fi is easy to come by. Weather at coffee shops like Starbucks or restaurants it is quite easy to just ask for the password. Most, if not all hotels, also have free Wi-Fi as well. So if you don’t want to pay for a sim card with data you can certainly get by without spending the USD15 to USD25 on the data package.

I personally always get a sim and data package as soon as I can. I prefer being connected in case of an emergency and to find my partner, Fatima, if we get split up. We normally get one sim and then we hotspot each other. It keeps us connected and helps split the cost. In Moscow, we got a data package at the airport and we paid 3,000 Rubles which is about USD47, at the time it didn’t seem a lot as we split the cost. This was not the best as we overpaid and looking back now really got taken for a ride. They told us it was unlimited and covered all regions but ran out on our last day (it was only for 10 days).

So here is my tip which has been hard learned: research the packages for the major mobile companies before you go. Check what specials each company is running. A quick search of the major networks will yield great results. Even though the website may be in Russian, a quick translation of the page will give exactly what you need. I’d also make sure it works in every region and that it works for as long as you are in Russia.

P.S. That being said, throughout the trip, the sim and data package was perfect as they helped us navigate Russia in the way we like - which is always convenient. Having data means we can use our apps such as google translate which is is god sent and the metro app which is a must when navigating the underground. Google maps also become invaluable which is perfect for navigation or locating the next best restaurant or subway station.

3. Public transport and taxis are the most convenient 

Getting around Moscow was pretty simple as it has an amazing public transport system. It has buses, trains, subways and if you are feeling touristy you can use the hop-on-hop-off bus and boat.

Troika Card

The troika card is your ultimate pass to using Moscow’s public transport, it’s much like the T-money in Korea, the EZ-link in Singapore or the Octopus card in Hong Kong. The card is available at ticket offices for a 50 rubles deposit which is refundable once the card is returned. I didn’t return mine as I kept it as a souvenir.

The biggest advantage of using the card is that you pay less for trips. A single ride on the subway without the card is 55 rubles but with it, that drops down to 35 rubles on any public transit and changing from the metro to any of land transports or vice versa is 54 rufles. The only catch with the transits is that the transfers have to be within 90 min of the last one.

#HHWT Tip: It is also essential to download the Yandex.Metro app ( iOS | Android ) as it contains subway maps and information. It will become indispensable as you navigate the subway. Plus since the world cup is approaching, many of the apps are now in English, yay!

Taxis (Gett or Yandex.Taxi)

One thing to be wary of is taxi drivers who will try to inflate the fare so you’ll have to pay more. Moscow is no exception and I can’t state this enough, don’t use the taxis you find parked around, with the 'for rent' signs. Trust me, I say this from experience. we had this happen to us from our hotel to the airport. The standard fare is about 850~1200 rubles but when we got to the airport the driver told us it would be 4500 rubles. Of course, we initially refused to pay the fare as it was not fair. After arguing with the driver and coming to a decision, we still had to pay about 2000 rubles.

Your best bet is to download the taxi apps Gett ( iOS | Android ) or Yandex.Taxi ( iOS | Android ). This way you can compare fares and pick the best option for you. We also used the apps to negotiate fares with normal taxis (the yellow ones) by using Gett or Yandex's prices as a starting point to lower the price. Always have the price fixed before you get in the cab or you may end up sitting with a high bill.

5. Stick to some basic safety tips

As far as I could tell and the way it felt in the major cities we visited, Russia is a safe country. The streets of Moscow didn’t feel unsafe at any time and it had tourist police in many of the major areas we visited, especially in the center of Moscow. It's not uncommon for police to request documentation from foreign tourists but it all adds to the safety of the city. Tourist police in Moscow help to support foreign tourists in case of any problems you may run into.

That being said, there is always petty theft and areas to avoid in every country and city. Moscow, like most major tourist cities, has problems with petty theft and sketchy areas. Here are some recommendations you can use as a rule of thumb:

• Pay attention to your belongings especially in crowded places, like markets, subways, and buses.
• Avoid travelling away from the centre of the city (to outlying areas), especially at night.
• Always carry your passport and immigration card in a safe way. They must be original, not photocopies.

7. Finding prayer spaces

Moscow is not the most Muslim-friendly place in terms of finding places to pray but they do have one of the most beautiful mosques in all of Europe.

The Moscow cathedral mosque is known as home to the Muslims of Moscow. The mosque minarets are 72 meters tall and its central dome is 46 meters high. One of the most amazing features of the architecture is that the dome and pavilions are covered with 12 kg of gold leaf. They also have an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of both the centre and north of Moscow. The mosque also boasts a museum which contains old Quranic manuscripts, a lock of hair of Prophet Muhammad SAW, a piece of the Kaaba, and a replica of the house of the Prophet. Slotting this into your itinerary means you can do your prayers and see some rare artifacts of Islam too.

8. Don’t miss these top attractions for a memorable trip

Russia has so much to offer and it's hard to pick from the many sights and sounds but I will give you  3 I feel you have to see, do and visit.

1. For the history buff: the Kremlin and Red Square

Even those that have never dreamt of traveling or leaving home know the colorful domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral and the high red walls it sits in front of. The Kremlin is the symbol by which Russia is known and has been the seat of its power for more than 1000 years. There is no way you can visit the Russian capital and forgo a trip to the home of the Tzars and Putin. It is so much more than just a walled fortress, it is the home to palaces, rare diamonds and a magnificent museum of all things royal.

I speak of the armory which is within the Kremlin walls and has some of the most amazing weapons, armor, and guns from all historic periods. It is also home to so many of the gifts received by the Russian royal family and has some of the most amazing carriages I have ever seen. There is also an amazing Dimond exhibit which is home to the royal diamonds as well as some of the most fantastic specimens of rubies, emeralds, and gold in the world.

Buy your tickets online and well in advance. The lines are ridiculous and we spent 3 hours in the queue to get tickets. Their system is very outdated because you have to stand in different lines for different tickets. But for the armory, I would suggest going into the ticket office and getting the ticket at the kiosk in the corner. Once you have all your tickets, walk towards the river away from the main Kremlin entrance and you will find a less used tourist entrance which is right at the armory. you'll thank us later ?

2. For the luxurious shopaholic: the Gum

The Gum is a luxury shopping centre in the very heart of the Red Square. It’s a must-see for every tourist visiting the Kremlin as it is luxury personified wrapped in architectural Chanel. Its beautiful design and sky roof make it a favourite spot for many Moscovites as well. It's a place to shop, admire amazing Neo-Russian architecture, enjoy a typical Russian lunch at an affordable place, or dine at a fancy restaurant with views towards the Red Square.

Try to go at night as they have fantastic star-like lights down the back street. Also, look for the sale periods on the website to save some money on big brands!

3. For the hipster: Izmailova market

The market is located very close to Partizanskaya metro station and should be on your list of where to buy your souvenirs. It also gives you a sense of what genuine life in the city is like. The market itself looks like a Tatar Kremlin and has many alleys and some very cool cafes and food (Do note that none of the shops are halal-certified. We recommend you dine at your own discretion.). They sell all kinds of souvenirs from Russian fur hats to hand-made items such as Matryoshka dolls, clothing articles, leather purses and so many other unusual objects.

Wondering around this market is a glimpse into an old Russian market. we found a wonderful and friendly seller and we decided to get all our souvenirs from him. If you can go on the weekend it is way better as more of the stalls are open and haggling will be much more fun. I can’t stress this enough - don’t haggle if you not going to buy the items but also don’t be afraid to walk away if you don’t get the price you want. Please remember this is not Asia so you can’t expect Asian prices.

4. For the classic tourist: boat cruise

The central Moscow River cruise is a two-hour route around the center of the capitals waterway. The boat will glide past the city’s major landmarks including the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. You will see Moscow in a whole new light as the beauty unfolds before your eyes. It is great if you want to make a date night or a celebration of some sort. It is amazing and the boats are pretty awesome too. They are modern and well maintained with a top and rear deck. You can also enjoy a variety of snacks and some food (do note there are no halal-certified items. We recommend you dine at your own discretion).

#HHWT Tip: The cruise is a hop-on-hop-off style so you can use it as a 'taxi' from one pier to the next. We looked at this company as one place to get our tickets. I also suggest you do it around 30 minutes before sunset so you get to see the city by day and how it changes by night. The lighting up of major attractions is very special.

Russia is nothing you expect and everything you want. I fell in love with Russia and Moscow from the 1st moment. Its history and culture run deep and are amazing. It has fashion, youth culture, and all things modern which are amazing to see in a place presented to us as harsh and cold. Moscow is a city growing in all areas of herself and for a brief moment, we all get to go on that journey with her. I hope that these tips help you in navigating your 1st trip to Moscow. Attack in Moscow: What role does the band Picnic play?

A t least 137 people have been killed in the attack on the "Crocus City Hall" in Moscow. The Russian rock band, Picnic, was due to perform on stage on Friday. What does their performance have to do with the attack?On the evening of Friday March 22, at around 8 p.m. local time, the Moscow concert venue, Crocus City Hall, became the scene of a bloody attack -- the exact background of which is still the subject of speculation. At least 137 were killed in the massacre, while many others are in critical condition. They were all awaiting a concert by the Russian rock band Picnic, which was due to start at 9 p.m.

'Wash yourself with your own blood'

Russia has been in a state of shock ever since. While the whole world is expressing its sympathy, rumors and false information are doing the rounds. Four suspects have been brought before a court in the Russian capital. The four Tajiks were formally accused of involvement in a terrorist attack by the Basmanny district court on Sunday evening. They face possible life imprisonment. At the same time, people are wondering why the terrorists chose this particular event. Was the attack also aimed at the band Picnic?

"Fear nothing, fear nothing -- no fire, no ringing shadow. You are no longer a rosy child. Wash yourself with your own blood in the morning. And shake the blossoming day." These are some of the lyrics of Picnic's new song, which was released on March 7 on the band's YouTube channel.

Those lines sound almost prophetic, especially now in Russia. A message posted on the band's website reads, "We express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. We are deeply shocked by this terrible tragedy and mourn with you." The band's musicians were unharmed because they were able to hide in the dressing room.

Picnic is one of the veterans of the Russian music scene, with origins in progressive rock. Founded in 1978 in St. Petersburg, which was still called Leningrad then, the band initially called itself Orion before changing its name to Picnic in 1981. Both monikers go back to the typical Soviet rock scene trick of choosing names that sound Western but cannot be banned.

In the 1980s, however, Picnic ended up on the list of bands that were denied major public appearances. The musicians and their audience therefore lived out their love for role models such as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones in rock clubs, sometimes underground. Singer and songwriter Edmund Shklyarsky has been the band leader since 1982. The son of a renowned scientist and a concert pianist, Shklyarsky attaches great importance to his Polish roots and his Catholic faith. From an early age, his sources of inspiration were not only the Rolling Stones and The Animals, but also Russian avant-garde poetry.

Picnic members are considered war supporters

In May 2023, Russian writer and nationalist activist Zakhar Prilepin praised the band's leader. According to Prilepin, Shklyarsky actively supported the "special operation" in Ukraine, among others through monetary donations. Prelepin further presumed that this was the "normal position of a Russian man and a Russian musician" -- a statement that has neither been denied nor confirmed by the members of Picnic.

Their being booked to perform in venue as renowned as the Crocus City Hall in Moscow can be seen as proof of the band's loyalty to the Russian state -- which had demanded a clear commitment from the country's rock and pop scene, especially when the war against Ukraine began. Musicians and bands who positioned themselves against the war -- including Russian stars such as Boris Grebenshchikov (Aquarium), Yuri Shevchuk (DDT) and Zemfira -- had to leave the country and suffered career setbacks. Russian pop diva Alla Pugacheva has also sharply criticized the Putin regime from abroad.

On the other hand, stars loyal to the regime are rewarded with lucrative performances and awards. The approximately 6,200 tickets for the Picnic concert on March 22 were almost sold out, as was the planned second gig on Saturday. Ticket prices ranged from E100 to E300 and the band was to be accompanied by a symphony orchestra and a "spectacular stage and light show," at least according to advertising.

Even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Picnic was added to the list of artists unwelcome in Ukraine. The reason for this was the band's repeated performances on the occupied Crimean peninsula, including in Sevastopol.

The day after the tragedy, numerous interview requests, including from DW, were met with nothing but expressions of grief and shock. On Sunday, March 24, Edmund Shklyarsky released a video message. "I would like to express my condolences to all the victims and relatives of this terrible and senseless tragedy," he said, adding that no words have yet been invented that could resurrect people and comfort their fellow human beings.

Whether there's any special significance in the terrorists' choice to attack a concert by this particular band remains a matter of speculation -- as does the question of whether Crocus City Hall plays any special role as the target of the carnage.

A concert venue of superlatives

Crocus City Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall on the grounds of an exhibition complex and is probably the most prestigious stage in Moscow among musicians. With an audience capacity of 5,000 to 10,000 people, it is much larger than a traditional concert hall and only slightly smaller than a soccer stadium. In short, a superlative venue in Moscow with no competitors.

Completed in 2009, Crocus, as it is known for short, quickly became one of Russia's most important concert halls. Located some 20 kilometers from the Kremlin, the venue can be reached within 30 minutes from the city center, depending on Moscow's notorious traffic congestions. It's faster for residents of the affluent suburbs in the west of the city, who prefer to attend the concerts there.

The excellent public transport links could have been an argument for the terrorists to choose Crocus City Hall for their attack. In addition, security precautions on the outskirts of the city are not as strict as in the center of Moscow.

Cultural events canceled in Russia

The concert hall belongs to the group of companies owned by the Azerbaijani-Russian construction tycoon and oligarch Aras Agalarov and his son Emin, a businessman and singer. There were rumors when the Crocus opened that Aras Agalarov had built his son a stage.

In recent years, however, Emin Agalarov has put his pop career on hold and concentrated primarily on the development and marketing of Crocus City Hall. Over the years, internationally renowned bands have performed here: Scorpions, Smokie, Pet Shop Boys, Nazareth and A-ha, as well as Sting, Elton John, Thomas Anders, Vanessa May and many others. In 2013, Donald Trump even strayed onto the stage, as a special guest at the final of the Miss Universe competition. But those days of cosmopolitanism are long gone.

A look at the program at Crocus City Hall gives a good insight into the sensitivities of Russian society, which oscillates between denial of reality and resignation: Concerts by regime-compliant musicians alternate with entertainment blockbusters such as Japanese drum shows or women's stand-up comedy. Now all major events have been canceled, not only in the damaged Crocus City Hall, but throughout Russia. Theaters, cinemas and museums will remain closed for the time being.
