The World's 30 Happiest Countries & People: 2024 List

I n 2012, the United Nations declared March 20 as the International Day of Happiness . Twelve years later, the 2024 World Happiness Report , which just released its latest rankings of the world's happiest countries, zeroed in on the happiness of people at different stages of life.

Regardless of whether you're young or old, these are the countries where people rate themselves as happiest and are most satisfied with their lives.

What is the happiest country in the world?

According to the 2024 World Happiness Report, Finland is the happiest country in the world for the seventh year in a row. It's followed by Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Israel, and the Netherlands in the annual survey released on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, that ranks countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. European countries, including Norway, Switzerland, and Luxembourg dominate the rest of the top 10. (It's worth noting that the survey in Israel took place after the attacks on October 7, 2023, but before the ensuing escalation in warfare, according to the report.)

The only country beside Israel outside of Europe to make the top 10 in 2024 is Australia, which ranked 10th. The United States dropped considerably to 23rd this year, down from its spot at 15 in the rankings last year, while the United Kingdom dropped one spot since last year to 20th.

Why are the Finnish so happy?

"Finnish happiness boils down to the simple things in life: connecting with nature, caring for one's mind and body, and appreciating design and art around us. Happiness can be found in moments of pure contentment you get when the setting is just right: on a bike ride in a forest with the perfect playlist on or enjoying a post-sauna sausage while cooling off on a beautiful summer evening," stated Heli Jimenez, senior director of international marketing at Business Finland, which is part of the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

The World Happiness Report bases its annual rankings predominantly on data from the main life evaluation question in the Gallup World Poll .

In it, respondents are asked to rate their current lives on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the best possible life for them and 0 being the worst possible life. The countries that made the top 10 this year ranged from Australia's 7.057 up to 7.741 for Finland at the top. Afghanistan had the lowest score at 1.721.

While these results are based entirely on self-reported perceptions of satisfaction, factors that the World Happiness Report says contribute to making these life evaluations better in each country include a higher GDP per capita, a strong social support system, higher life expectancy, greater freedom, absence of government and corporate corruption, and charitable giving.

"Rankings differ a lot for the young and the old. In some cases these favor the old, as in the United States and Canada, where the rankings for those aged 60 and older are 50 or more places higher than for those under 30. In other cases, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, the reverse is true, with many rankings being more than 40 places higher for the young than for the old," the Happiness Report concludes. "In almost every global region . . . social interactions add to happiness, with their effects flowing through increases in social support and reductions in loneliness."

Can traveling to the happiest country in the world bring you greater joy?

In Finland, it's a common belief that happiness is "a skill that can be learned," according to the country's tourism marketing organization Visit Finland , which has unveiled a new five-day Helsinki Happiness Hacks urban expedition that will be free for select participants.

Those who are interested in participating have until April 4, 2024, to apply; Visit Finland will then select a group of lucky travelers to come to Helsinki to learn "new happiness hacks that they can apply to their everyday life"-free of charge. To be considered, applicants must complete a social media challenge and an online form .

From June 9 to 14, 2024, a group of "Helsinki Happiness Hackers" will guide participants on what makes the city's residents so happy, based on four categories: nature and lifestyle, health and balance, food and well-being, and design.

Finland's friendly locals, thriving culture and coffee scenes , and unfettered access to nature all make it a great destination for those looking to find greater joy in their own travels.

Arts and culture lovers will be thrilled to explore Helsinki's museums. In the past few years, Helsinki opened Amos Rex , a world-class contemporary art museum, and Oodi , an energy-efficient public library at the center of the city designed to be the nation's "living room."

If being outdoors makes you happiest, Finland has plenty of that, too. Like many other Nordic residents, Finns have a close relationship to nature and get outside even during the coldest months . Finland is also home to numerous islands, many of which make for an idyllic remote escape . For those who want to relax in a serious way, Finland has more than 3 million saunas .

K’gari, mainly known as Fraser Island and meaning ‘paradise’, is the largest sand island in the world, covering an area of 184,000 hectares and stretching over 120kms.

Comprised of ancient sand dunes, unique rainforests, and crystal clear freshwater lakes, this World Heritage site is natural beauty at it’s best. Located off the Eastern Queensland coast, accessible by a short ferry ride from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Bay. There are no roads on the Island, so the only way to travel is by 4WD.

The island has over 100 freshwater lakes, including the iconic Lake Wabby and Lake Mckenzie. Both are breathtaking in colour and surrounded by white powdery sand and lush forest. Scenery on Fraser is both stunning and unique, with striking sand cliffs running along stretches of uninterrupted white beaches. Rainforests over 200 metres high grow out of sand dunes – the only place in the world where you’ll ever see this.

Maheno Shipwreck

As if driving up 75 Mile Beach with the ocean on one side and rainforest on the other wasn’t enough, Fraser Island throws a shipwreck on the beach as well.

At 5000 tonnes and 400 feet in length, the SS Maheno is by no means a small shipwreck either. As you drive down the beach, the wreck of the Maheno will start to appear just before you reach Indian Head. As you near closer and closer, the wreck will start dominating the visual of your windscreen. Built in 1905, the SS Maheno has got some nautical miles on the clock, and a few stories to tell. A passenger liner converted into a hospital ship upon the arrival of WWI, she’s been all over the world saving lives. Go ahead and check her and her story out for yourself. Let her do the talking while you park up and do the walking. She really is a magnificent sight to behold.

Indian Head

Indian Head, found at the end of 75 Mile Beach, also known as Tuckee, meaning stone, are the famous visible rock formations formed from volcanic activity some 50 to 80 million years ago.

Lake Mckenzie

The Queen of the Fraser Island Lake game. With its sapphire blue waters, it’s easy to see why Lake Mckenzie is known as the “Jewel of the Island”.

If you’re the kind of person that enjoys swimming at the pool more than the ocean, then Lake Mckenzie is your gateway fix to taking things further. With its still calm waters filtering through silica sand, this h2o is so pure that very little life is supported, giving it swoon worthy mediterranean pool sights that you just can’t resist.

Eli Creek is a popular picnic and swimming spot along 75 Mile Beach. Deceptively powerful, the creek pours about four million liters of fresh water into the sea every hour. A pandanus fringed boardwalk along the creek leads to a bridge, making it a lovely spot to soak up the view and capture a photo of the creek running out towards the beach.

Lake Wabby Sand Dunes

K’Gari’s deepest lake, Lake Wabby is a great place to see nature in action. It’s both a window lake and the only barrage lake on Fraser, meaning the natural spring is blocked by a giant sand bank. Bordering its blue-green waters, the towering Hammerstone Sandblow engulfs the lake by about a meter per year, a testament to the constantly evolving landscape.

From the lake car park, it’s about a 40 minute hike to the lake, but the journey is mostly uphill on soft sand, so it’s best to start early before the strong heat of the day. If you’re feeling less energetic, you can climb to a lookout with amazing views of the landscape.

Once you arrive at the lake, you can cool off with a refreshing dip. Don’t be surprised if you feel something nibbling your toes; this is the only lake on the island that supports fish, and they like to help exfoliate your feet.

We recommend high clearance 4WD vehicles for your adventures on K’Gari. Check out our various tour options or try your luck with renting your own 4WD and make your own adventure.

Is there anywhere on Fraser Island that you cannot travel?

Fraser Island recommends to not drive on the sand dunes and keep to the formed tracks when entering beach camping areas. Also beach driving is not permitted in the no vehicle zones which include between Towoi Creek & Sandy Cape Lighthouse, between Moon Point & Hook Point on the western beach, and between Waddy Point & Middle Rocks (south Waddy Beach).

Do I need a permit to camp on Fraser Island?

Yes, camping permits are required for all camping on the island, except in privately run camping areas.

Are fires permitted on Fraser Island?

No, campfires are prohibited on Fraser. This is to prevent burn injuries, escaped camp fires becoming wildfires, reducing rubbish and environment scars, reduce the risk of introduced pests and diseases, and prevent impacts of firewood on the ecology.

A Proclamation on Mother’s Day,   2024

     Today, we show gratitude to moms and mother-figures for loving their children unconditionally; raising them with care, courage, and grit; and leading by the power of their example.

     On my desk in the Oval Office, I have a picture of my mother, Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Finnegan, in Grant Park on the night that President Barack Obama and I won the 2008 election.  That night, my mother walked on stage, took my and President Obama’s hands, and said, “Come on honey, it’s going to be okay.”  That was my mother — fearless, caring, and ready to lend anyone the bravery that always resided in her heart.  She taught my siblings and me that courage was the greatest virtue, instilled in us the belief that everyone is your equal, and inspired us to lead lives defined by honor and integrity. 

     I have also seen the way that my wife, First Lady Jill Biden, has put her whole heart into being a wonderful mother and grandmother.  She brings our family so much joy and is the source of so many of our best memories.  She has also guided our family forward through the most difficult times, always finding the strength to hold us together.  Every day, she shares her heart with the students she teaches full time and so many others who find inspiration in her leadership, kindness, and wisdom.

     Across the country, mothers are raising their children, caring for their families, and making history.  Mothers are leaders in every field — from Main Street to Wall Street, they are driving innovation and strengthening our economy.  They are the health care heroes, service members, and public servants, who sacrifice so much for all of us.  They are the artists, journalists, engineers, and scientists creating new possibilities.  They serve at the highest levels of my Administration, working hard to open the doors of opportunity wider for the next generation.

     Moms do so much for all of us, and my Administration has their backs.  During the pandemic, I signed the American Rescue Plan, which helped keep the doors open for 225,000 child care providers so families could go to work while their children were cared for.  At the same time, we expanded the Child Tax Credit, giving moms and families some breathing room — which helped slash child poverty rates in half during my first year in office.  My Administration is also making sure that the good-paying jobs from our once-in-a-generation investments in infrastructure and clean energy go to women, who have been underrepresented in these sectors for too long.  I also signed legislation to ensure employers make reasonable accommodations for pregnant and nursing mothers, who deserve to have job security and common-sense workplace protections — such as breaks to drink water, eat, rest, or use the restroom.  These protections help ensure that pregnant workers and new moms do not have to choose between their job and their health.

     My Administration is working to make sure that mothers have access to the health care they need.  With the leadership of Vice President Kamala Harris, we released a Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis, which outlines actions the Federal Government will take to combat maternal mortality and improve maternal health.  Further, the American Rescue Plan also gave States the option to provide a full year of postpartum coverage to women on Medicaid, increasing it from just 60 days previously.  Now, 46 States, Washington, D.C., and the United States Virgin Islands provide a full year of this critical care.

     This Mother’s Day, may we all show gratitude to our mothers, who are our rocks, believing in us so that we may believe in ourselves.  May we pray for those who have lost their mothers and miss their comfort each day and for the mothers who have lost a child — a piece of their soul.  May we wholeheartedly support the countless mothers across the country who work tirelessly to make the American Dream real for their children and families.

     The Congress, by joint resolution approved May 8, 1914 (38 Stat. 770), has designated the second Sunday in May each year as “Mother’s Day” and requested the President to call for its appropriate observance.

     NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 12, 2024, as Mother’s Day.  I urge all Americans to express their love, respect, and gratitude to mothers everywhere.  I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

WNBA will finally charter to all games. You should be mad it took this long

Twenty-eight years after it should have happened, the WNBA announced Tuesday that it would charter to all regular season games starting as soon as next week, giving the best women’s basketball players in the world something they earned long ago but is often not acknowledged by their superiors: Respect. 

The news gives that old saying “better late than never” new meaning — most of the time when someone says that, they don’t think “late” is going to be in reference to nearly three decades. 

This is a “historic” move for the WNBA according to league commissioner Cathy Engelbert, a huge step for a league that often acts like a start-up instead of a major player in the sports landscape. And while overdue, it’s a major win. 

Players are downright giddy knowing they’ll be able to recover quicker after road games, and do so while prioritizing their privacy and safety. As WNBA agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas, who represents numerous top players, told USA TODAY Sports, this is “a great example of when doing the right thing for player health and safety is good for business.”

Bottom line: This is good news.  But it’s also worth pointing out that the optics of this decision and its timing are terrible. And optics matter.

From the outside, it certainly looks as if the league suddenly decided to start chartering full time due to the arrival of a popular white player (Caitlin Clark), when last season the safety of a Black player (Brittney Griner) wasn’t enough to create permanent change. 

On Tuesday, Engelbert insisted it's more nuanced than that. She told media the popularity of the 2024 draft class is not what drove this decision; she’s been working on getting charters since she took over as commissioner in July 2019. She estimates that it will cost the league $25 million to charter full time. “You need that long-term revenue model,” she said, “and we haven’t had it.” 

Women’s basketball is experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity right now, led in large part by the frenzy surrounding Clark. With Clark’s entry into the league last month, chartering in the WNBA had once again become a major talking point. WNBA players have fought for years for charter flights — commonplace in nearly every other professional league — and been told they didn’t have the money, it wasn’t a priority, it wasn’t a necessity. 

These were excuses in my mind. The WNBA, for better or worse, is financially backed by the NBA, a $10 billion-dollar entity that could have paid for charter flights from Day 1 if it wanted. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has always had the power and opportunity to get involved. For years, it seems to me he chose not to. 

To say it wasn’t a priority was also a low blow, as players were forced to pick between respectable salaries and charter flights during the last collective bargaining negotiations. As for it not being a necessity, Griner would surely beg to differ. 

For years, I’ve had conversations with players, agents and powerbrokers about the optics of women’s basketball at both the professional and college level. People have been especially critical of the WNBA, which players it chooses to promote vs. not, how it markets the league, etc. And while privately they’ll let their feelings be known, Black women, who have been the foundation of this league since its inception in 1997, have been especially reluctant to vocalize these criticisms, leery of rocking the boat. 

When they do speak out, they’re blunt. Two years ago, two-time MVP A’ja Wilson told ESPN.com, "Even though our league is predominantly Black, I think it's hard for our league to push us, in a sense, because they still have to market, in their mind, what is marketable. Sometimes a Black woman doesn't check off those boxes."

In her new book, which was released Tuesday and details her terrifying 10-month detainment in Russia, Griner talks about returning to the states to both fanfare and vitriol. Threats became commonplace for the nine-time All-Star and two-time Olympian, as she walked through airports with her teammates on their way to and from games.

Despite major concerns about Griner’s safety, no charters were provided for the Mercury or Griner individually at the beginning of the 2023 season. (Previously, the league fined the New York Liberty for chartering, saying it was a competitive advantage banned by the CBA.) 

Last June, Griner was accosted in DFW by a right-wing YouTube personality despite Griner’s security guard trying to steer him away. Police were called, the clip went viral and fans shared their outrage on social media. While Griner was allowed to fly private at her discretion the rest of the season — separating her from her teammates, which no one liked — it never should have taken that incident to spur action. 

Again, players are thrilled they’ve finally got this benefit. They were also surprised by the news. 

“As a player that's been in this league for a while, we've been fighting for this first for a long time,” Breanna Stewart of the Liberty, a two-time MVP, said Tuesday night after playing at Chicago. “So now to say that you've just come up with the 25 mil? Nothing has changed. Media deal, CBA, nothing, you know what I mean where (you could say) that money has came in. So either you were just holding on to it for whatever. But honestly, I am happy. Very happy. But surprised because I thought it was going to be used a bargaining chip in CBA negotiations.” 

Even if it’s true that Clark wasn’t the final straw, or the individual who pushed the league to finally do the right thing, for the WNBA and Engelbert to not even acknowledge that the timing looks problematic once again minimizes the concerns of the Black players. 

“It’s a tough balance,” said sixth-year veteran Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx. “It is a little bit frustrating, but I feel like that’s how everything (changes); you put a spotlight on things and force their hand … I’m happy something catapulted this change, in that sense I’m happy we got to this point, but I am a little disappointed it took so long to get here.” 

On Tuesday, when USA TODAY Sports asked Las Vegas All-Stars Wilson and Chelsea Gray about the charter issue, Wilson said, “If we credit this to one person, that’s disrespectful to the (players) before us. They help us continue to push this league and push this game and grow it … I’m happy it’s finally here and it’s happening, because I know we were all tired of waiting for it.” 

I’m tired, too. Tired of the WNBA repeatedly dismissing concerns from its employees. Tired of the league acting like race doesn’t matter when its women of color have the bravery to speak out, even though they have the most the lose. Tired of reminding people that we must keep this conversation going, even if the charter issue itself is fixed. Tired of telling people it’s OK to demand more of a professional organization that’s been around 28 years. 

But mostly, I’m tired of the WNBA not meeting the moment. One day, maybe the league will get it right the first time.
