TSA Rules for Vapes and e-Cigarettes (The Big Questions Answered) [2023]

As people return to traveling, a lot of passengers will be asking about the TSA rules for vapes, mods, and e-cigarettes.

The rules are relatively straightforward but there are some specific requirements that you need to be aware of when it comes to things like cartridges and batteries .

In this article, I’ll break down everything you need to know about bringing your vape pens or e-cigarettes through airport security.

Table of Contents

What are the TSA rules for vapes and e-cigarettes?

TSA allows passengers to bring electronic cigarettes and similar devices (vaporizers, vape pens, mods, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems) through airport security as a carry-on.

However, these devices are prohibited in CHECKED baggage.

The FAA banned e-cigarettes in checked luggage in 2016 after there were reports of small fires that broke out in the cargo holds. So this restriction is for the safety of all passengers and crew.

Please do not attempt to get around this restriction as it will put everybody at risk.

Bringing vapes and e-cigarettes through airport security

When taking your vapes and e-cigarettes through the airport, you can bring them inside your carry-on or inside a personal item (such as a backpack) no problem.

(I don’t recommend putting them in your pocket while in the airport because you might forget as you go through airport security scanners .)

Some airlines, such as American Airlines and Delta, recommended that you store them in a designated carry case that may have come with the original vape packaging.

If your mod/vaping device has multiple parts then it is recommended that you disassemble your vaporizer prior to entering the security line.

Even better is if you have all of the parts (atomizer, tank, mouth piece, batteries, etc.) neatly placed within a carrier for easy inspection.

When you are actually going through security, it’s recommended to remove your e-cigarette/vape, place it in a tray/bin, and put it through the x-ray scanner separately from your carry-on bag.

If you keep it in your bag, it could look suspicious and cause you to undergo additional screening.

Generally speaking, the larger your device the greater your chances of a TSA agent wanting to take a closer look.

If they want to take a closer inspection, just let them do their thing. If you don’t have any illegal substances, you don’t have anything to worry about.

Note that if you are bringing special pods or packs that contain liquid vape you need to comply with the liquids rule which I will talk about below.

Liquid vape cartridges

Liquid cartridges such as JUULpods that click into the top of the JUUL devices and other similar containers that contain e “juices” are considered a liquid and, therefore, they will be subject to the TSA liquids 3-1-1 rule.

The liquids 3-1-1 rule requires all liquid containers to be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller and for them to be stored in a quart sized bag (preferably a clear Ziploc bag).

This means that if you are transporting JUULpods or other juice packs, you need to transport them in a very specific way.

First, the vape cartridges need to be smaller than 100ml .

Many vape juice cartridges are much smaller than 100ml so it should not be difficult for you to find TSA compliant vape cartridges.

In some cases you may need to remove your vape cartridge from your device so that the device has no attachments containing liquid.

Second, you need to place these cartridges in a quart sized Ziploc bag.

The key thing here is that the cartridges must fit “comfortably” inside the bag which means the bag cannot be overstuffed or almost bursting at the seams.

If you do not have TSA Pre-Check , you will need to remove your liquids bag from your carry-on as you make your way through the airport screening process.

Because of this screening process you might be better off just transporting your pods in your checked baggage where you can transport unlimited quantities.

There are reports of the pods leaking at high altitudes so having them in a sealed bag is highly recommended. It is also better to transport a partially used cartridge that has room for the liquid to expand to avoid leakage.

Checking your bag at the gate

Sometimes your plane may not have room for your carry-on, especially if you are towards the back of the boarding process .

If this happens to you and you are traveling with your vape, be sure that you remove your vape and batteries from your carry-on bag that they are checking because they will not be allowed as a checked item.

If you are bringing a power charger or power bank that contains a lithium ion battery it must also be packed in your carry-on bag.

This is because such battery packs can cause risks of explosions and fires in the cargo hold. So to be on the safe side, bring your spare batteries with you on your carry-on.

Keep in mind that TSA can apply extra scrutiny when traveling with multiple spare batteries because the batteries can pose a risk. This is especially true if your lithium batteries have more than 100 watt hours.

For that reason, you may want to only travel with one spare battery or pack your multiple batteries delicately so that they cannot come in to contact with each other.

Flying with marijuana/THC vapes

With the growing legalization of marijuana in different states, a lot of travelers are now curious as to how they can legally fly when carrying marijuana on them.

The first thing to note is that marijuana is still illegal on the federal level which makes it illegal to fly with.

Reportedly, regardless of what airport you are departing, TSA’s response to finding marijuana will be the same.

“It is important for me to note that TSA’s response to the discovery of marijuana is the same in every state and at every airport – regardless of whether marijuana has been or is going to be legalized,” TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers  explained.

“This also covers medical marijuana.”

But in practice it’s not clear that this is the case.

If you are flying from a state that has legal marijuana, such as Colorado, and you were caught with marijuana at the airport, it is possible that they will simply request for you to dispose of the cannabis .

But if you were traveling from an area where marijuana is not legalized, the response could be much different.

The bottom line is that this is still a bit of a gray area that is still developing and so there are basically no guarantees as to how TSA will react upon finding marijuana in your possession during the security screening process.

The second thing to note is that TSA is not actively looking to discover marijuana or other illegal drugs that might be in your possession. The TSA website states:

TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs

However, they do note that if illegal substances are discovered during the security screening process the TSA will refer the matter to a law-enforcement officer.

Many vapes containing THC are pretty discreet so they may not always be easily detected.

So if you are traveling with (small amounts) of marijuana/THC vape pens you may not encounter any problems but you should be prepared to have to dispose of your marijuana if it is detected by TSA and in a worst-case scenario, be prepared to explain why you have it in your possession to a law-enforcement officer.

The back up plan

Some travelers who are weary about losing items when going through security will bring a self-addressed envelope with postage so that they can mail off any item that would be confiscated.

I’ve personally never tried this before but I have seen reports online of people doing it successfully. While a rare occurrence, it could come in handy when a TSA agent uses discretion to confiscate your vape due to some unknown reason or suspicion ( TSA agents have discretion to prevent you from bringing items through security ).

I don’t see any reason why the self-addressed envelope route could not work in many instances but if you are trying to mail off illegal substances such as marijuana then it could obviously be very problematic (and illegal) so use common sense.

TSA rules for vapes FAQ

No, you are not allowed to vape inside an aircraft. This is to protect people from the devices’ second-hand vapor and to reduce the risk of a device malfunctioning. If you are caught vaping on a plane you could be subject to a large fine up to $4,000.

Many airlines require your vape to be turned off or to be placed in safety mode during flight.

No, you are not allowed to vape anywhere inside an aircraft.

Yes, e-cigarettes are allowed to be brought on a plane as a carry-on.

Vape pens are not allowed in checked baggage because they present a hazardous risk. The batteries could be prone to exploding and catching fire in the cargo compartment.

Many airlines will not allow you to charge an e-cigarette during flight and may require it to be powered off. You can ask a flight attendant but be prepared for them to tell you no.

Some countries have banned e-cigarettes from flights and from importation so before attempting to travel with an e-cigarette on an international flight you should first verify that possession of the e-cigarette in the country is legal.

While TSA does not actively seek out vapes containing THC, it is possible that if it is detected they will request for you to throw it out or refer you to airport authorities. This can even occur when departing from a state with legalized marijuana.

No, you do not have to declare your electronic cigarette or vape. However, you should remove it from your carry-on and comply with the liquids rule if needed.

Cartridges containing liquids tend to leak at high altitudes as the liquid expands under the decreased air pressure. So it is recommended to not carry cartridges that are full with e-liquid. In addition, storing them in a sealed bag or container could be a good idea.

Yes, vapor can set off the smoke alarm on a plane which is another reason why you do not want to vape on a plane. Passengers have gotten into trouble with this in the past, so it’s something you don’t want to risk.

Traveling with an e-cigarette or vape through airport security is permitted so long as you comply with the liquid rules.

You want to pay extra attention to make sure you do not leave your cigarettes in your checked baggage because that could present major risks to the flight and also get you into legal trouble.

Vapes on a Plane?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working with other federal agencies and organizations to remind airline passengers that electronic smoking devices like vaporizers (vapes) and e-cigarettes are considered hazardous materials when transported on aircraft.

Electronic smoking devices contain lithium batteries that pose a fire risk. Passengers are allowed to bring the devices on board but they must be appropriately packed. Vapes, e-cigarettes and spare lithium batteries must be placed in carry-on luggage only. Vapes and e-cigarettes should be carefully protected to prevent the device from accidentally turning on. Place the vapes or e- cigarettes in a protective case or remove the battery and place each battery in its own case or plastic bag to prevent a short circuit.

Just as passengers are not allowed to smoke cigarettes on an aircraft, they should never use their vapes or e-cigarettes on an aircraft. It’s not only dangerous, it’s a federal offense.

The FAA encourages manufacturers, retailers and consumers of vapes and e-cigarettes to learn and promote the rules on flying with these products by sharing messaging from a new Vapes On A Plane Marketing Kit.

How to Bring Your Vape Juice on a Plane

Can you vape on a plane, can you vape at the airport, can you buy vape juice and replacement coils abroad, always learn the local vaping laws before you travel.

If you prefer listening to this article as a podcast episode:

“ Can you bring a vape on a plane?”

If you’ve completed your transition to vaping and are no longer a smoker, there’s a good chance that your need for nicotine isn’t as great as it once was. You probably find that you can go longer without vaping than you previously were able to go without smoking a cigarette. It’s likely, however, that you still don’t want to be far from your vape if you’re going to be out of the house for a while – and that definitely applies to traveling with your vape. It’s not so different from wanting to bring your cigarettes on the plane if you were flying to another country.

Bringing vapes on planes, however, isn’t exactly the same as bringing a pack of cigarettes because traveling with your vape gear  involves bringing two types of items – liquids and lithium-ion batteries – that airlines consider hazardous. In addition, regional and national vaping regulations differ drastically around the world. You can’t just assume that you’re free to buy vape gear and e-liquid anywhere in the world like you can with cigarettes – and bringing your vape on a plane definitely isn’t as simple as carrying a pack of cigarettes in your pocket.

So, can you take a vape on a plane in 2024? In most cases, you’ll have no trouble traveling with your vape as long as you obey the rules that cover traveling with liquids and batteries. However, there are some special considerations that you should keep in mind if you want your experience to be as good as it can be.

Important Note: International Vaping Laws Can Change Without Notice

Vaping regulations are continually evolving. Research the relevant laws about bringing vapes on a plane before you travel.

The most important thing to know about bringing your vape on a plane is that airlines’ rules about vaping – and the vaping laws in the various nations around the world – can change without notice. Although the information presented in this article is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of writing, it is your responsibility to confirm all applicable rules and regulations before you travel.

How to Bring Your Vape on a Plane

Vaping devices and replacement batteries always belong in your carry-on bag. Don’t ever bring a vape on a plane in your checked luggage unless the battery is removed and stored separately in your hand baggage.

The regulations that airlines have in place for traveling with your vaping hardware primarily have to do with the fact that most vaping devices  have lithium-ion batteries. Vape battery safety  is vitally important because lithium-ion batteries can overheat and potentially catch fire if they’re mishandled. Because of the change in air pressure at altitude, there’s also a slight inherent risk to bringing any lithium-ion battery on a flight. That’s why battery sellers usually have to use ground carriers when shipping products to consumers.

These are the rules that most airlines have in place for bringing your vape on a plane.

  • Any vaping device with a built-in battery – or any device with a battery installed – should be packed in your carry-on baggage and turned off. Many airport security officers will also allow you to carry a single vaping device in your pocket.
  • All spare batteries should also be packed in your carry-on baggage. Pack spare batteries in padded carriers that isolate the metal terminals and prevent the batteries from touching other metal objects. You can carry a vaping device in your checked luggage only if the device has the battery removed.
  • If you want to bring disposable vapes on a plane , you need to pack them in your carry-on bag and place them in the same zip-top bag that you use to store your liquid items. This rule applies to disposable vapes because they contain liquid and because the liquid can’t be removed.

The rules about bringing your vape on a plane may seem strict, but it’s important to mitigate the fire risk as much as possible. The fact that the batteries are in a pressurized cabin helps to lower the risk somewhat, as does the fact that the in-flight staff will be able to respond quickly to any unexpected event.

Vape on a Plane

If you want to pack vape juice in your carry-on bag, you need to place it in a zip-top bag with your other liquid and gel items. You’re also free to pack e-liquid in your checked luggage.

Airlines also have special rules about traveling with liquids and gels if you intend to bring those items in your carry-on luggage. For that reason, you’ll have to make special considerations if you want to bring vape juice on a plane.

  • Airlines’ restrictions about traveling with liquids apply to every liquid or gel product that you want to bring. That includes bottles of vape juice and any vape tanks or pods containing e-liquid. It also applies to toiletry products like toothpaste, soap, perfume and shampoo.
  • To carry a bottle of vape juice in your carry-on bag, the bottle must be 1 oz (about 30 ml) or smaller.
  • All of the liquid products in your carry-on bag must fit in a single quart-sized zip-top bag. When you go through the security checkpoint at the airport, you’ll need to remove the zip-top bag from your carry-on bag and present it for a separate inspection.

After you fill your zip-top bag with all of the toiletries and other items that you want to bring in your carry-on bag, you may find that there isn’t a lot of room left over for vape juice. However, the restrictions that apply to bringing liquids on a plane only apply to the liquids in your carry-on bag. You can bring additional vape juice in your checked baggage without restrictions. It’s a good idea, though, to pack your extra e-liquid in plastic bags in case the bottles leak.

It’s illegal to vape on a plane. Bring a nicotine replacement product if you’re concerned about cravings.

No airlines allow vaping in flight. You should never attempt to vape on a plane because you will almost certainly be caught and will then face significant legal problems. If you have a long flight and are concerned that you’ll be uncomfortable without access to nicotine, you should bring an alternative form of nicotine supplementation like nicotine gum or pouches.

Vape Juice(300k)

You can only vape at an airport if you’re in a designated smoking area. Some airports only have smoking areas outside their terminals, so you should bring a nicotine replacement product if you don’t want to leave the airport.

During your travels, the best thing you can do to ensure that you won’t get in trouble for vaping is to assume that you can’t vape in any place where smoking isn’t allowed. That means leaving your vaping device in your bag unless you’re in a designated smoking area.

One important thing to remember about vaping at an airport is that some airports do not have smoking areas within their security perimeters – and some of the airports that do have airside smoking areas don’t have signs identifying those areas. If you haven’t traveled in a while and are used to having a posh smoking lounge available at every airport, you should be aware that the well-appointed smoking lounges of the past have largely disappeared at most airports. These days, smoking areas are more likely to be outdoor cages without climate control and little in the way of seating.

It has become increasingly rare for airports to advertise the fact that they have smoking areas available. If you’re unable to find a smoking area by reading the signs at the airport, ask an employee for help.

In some cases, you may discover that an airport you’re traveling through doesn’t have an airside smoking area available. In that case, you’ll need to enjoy your last vape before entering the airport. If you have a layover at an airport that doesn’t have an airside smoking area available, you’ll need to leave the airport to vape. If the airport is in a foreign country, you’ll need to go through customs and enter the country before you can vape. You’ll then need to go through the security checkpoint again in order to reenter the airport.

Because vaping at some airports is so inconvenient, this is another case in which you’ll be glad to have an alternative form of nicotine supplementation available.

Some countries don’t allow the sale of vaping products with nicotine, and others don’t allow the sale of vaping products at all. Research the market conditions in your destination country before traveling internationally.

One of the reasons why it’s a good idea to research the local vaping laws before you travel is because you can’t always be certain that vaping products will be as easy to buy in your destination country as they are where you live. The vaping laws around the world are often quite complicated. In some countries, vaping products are as easy as tobacco products for adults to buy. In other countries, vaping products are legal to own but are not legal to buy, sell or import. There are even a few nations in which vaping is banned entirely. Therefore, it’s extremely important to understand the local laws before you go.

Even in nations where vaping is completely legal, it’s still wise to know what the climate is like for vaping consumers before you travel abroad. Some places have flavor restrictions for e-liquid. Others only allow the sale of e-liquid without nicotine. In some places, the prices for vape gear are much higher than what you might be used to paying. Don’t assume that the environment for consumers in your destination country is the same as where you live unless you’ve done the appropriate research.

Don’t vape in public while traveling unless you’re sure that you’re in an area where vaping is allowed.

The last thing to consider about traveling with your vape gear is whether you’ll be allowed to vape in all of the places where you’re used to vaping at home. Maybe you like to vape, for instance, while you’re going for a walk in the park. However, many nations and localities have public smoking bans that also apply to vaping – and that’s another factor you’ll need to be aware of before you travel. It’s always safe to assume that you shouldn’t vape in a place where you wouldn’t be allowed to smoke.

Flying With a Vape: A Guide to Traveling With Vape Gear

Versed Vaper V Logo Red Final

Your favorite vape and e-liquid can be excellent creature comforts to keep you from getting homesick when traveling. Not only that, strict smoking laws means vaping can oftentimes be your best option when trying to get your nicotine fix abroad. However, as vape and e-cigarette laws across the world become stricter, there are some considerations you need to make before you pack your gear for an upcoming trip. We will go over some of the best tips to know when traveling with a vape, as well as answer some of the most pertinent questions you may have when traveling domestically and internationally from the United States.

What are the rules for flying with a vape?

Knowing the rules for traveling with a vape and vape juice can save you a massive headache with TSA. There can be strict rules on traveling with your vape , from the size of batteries you can pack, to even where and how you pack your device. It’s always a great idea to consult TSA and the airline you have chosen to fly with directly to ensure you meet all of their requirements.

These rules can differ from airline to airline, but the general rule outlined by TSA is that your device must be in your carry-on luggage. Failing to do so will likely result in your vape or e-cigarette being seized if you are caught with it in your checked-in luggage.

The reason vapes are not allowed in check-in baggage is due to the increased likelihood of the lithium batteries exploding or combusting in the cargo hold as a result of decreased air pressure.

Can I bring vape juice on a plane?

Yes, vape juice is allowed on a plane. E-liquids can be placed in either your checked baggage or your carry-on hand luggage. There are still regulations placed on vape juices that you need to know when packing your setup.

As with all liquids, airlines enforce strict rules on the quantities of vape juice you can travel with. Ensure your e-juices are in containers no larger than 3.4 oz or 100 ml. You can bring as many liquids as can fit in a 1-quart or 950 ml bag for carry-on luggage. However, this counts for all liquids, including things like creams and aerosols.

You can pack additional vape juice in your checked-in baggage, but the air pressure in the cargo hold could lead to spillage during the flight. Your favorite flavors might be great for vaping, but who wants their clothing to be wet and smelling of them?

Tips for packing a vape and e-liquids

Here are some of the best tips for traveling with your vape supplies:

  • Pack light – it’s best to leave your coil kits and unnecessary items at home as these can be lost or cause unnecessary complications with security
  • Opt for a disposable or pod system – for vape connoisseurs, this might leave you with a less enjoyable experience, but it will save you great efforts on a short trip. That being said, there are some excellent pod devices available nowadays.
  • Put your batteries in your carry-on
  • Ensure your device cannot be activated accidentally
  • Try a nicotine alternative for long flights – there are great ways to get your nicotine fix mid-flight
  • Leave your THC and CBD liquids at home – traveling with THC and even CBD can be risky or straight up illegal
  • Avoid packing unopened or very full bottles of vape juice – they can expand and leak or burst due to cabin pressure
  • Try nicotine salts – their higher nicotine strength means you might need to bring less vape juice along for the trip
  • Prioritize your vape juice – purchase things like deodorant, toothpaste and other toiletries at your destination. This will let you pack more e-liquid in your 1-quart carry-on bag.

How to travel with batteries

An additional consideration to make when bringing batteries for your vape is how they need to be packed to be compliant. As outlined by the FAA, here are the proper procedures for packing your spare vape batteries:

  • The most important rule of them all – pack all batteries in your carry-on luggage
  • Know your size limits – 2 grams of lithium per battery for non-rechargeable batteries & less than 100 Wh per battery for rechargeable batteries
  • Only bring enough batteries for yourself. Otherwise you could be questioned by authorities regarding distribution or sale
  • Leave the batteries in their packaging or put tape over the end terminals
  • Never travel with damaged batteries

For those wanting a more in-depth breakdown, the FAA has published these guidelines under their Pack Safe page.

Can I take CBD on an airplane?

CBD is allowed if you are flying domestically within the United States, granted the product contains less than 0.3% THC.

The same rules apply for all liquids, so make sure you do not have more than three ounces. This has been confirmed by the TSA themselves.  “Products that contain hemp-derived CBD oil or are FDA-approved are generally legal & can fly,” the FDA tweeted.

That being said, if you are unsure of the THC percentage or are generally uneasy traveling with CBD, the best course of action is to simply purchase whatever you need when you reach your destination, if possible.

If you are flying outside of the United States, take care to look up the laws surrounding CBD in the country that you are flying to. It may or may not be legal, so it’s a good idea to find out before you take your CBD with you.

If in doubt, leave your CBD products at home. CBD is becoming more and more accepted globally, meaning you probably won’t have to go without it.

Can I take THC Vapes on a plane?

It’s not recommended to fly with weed or THC vape cartridges. In the United States, cannabis remains illegal in the eyes of federal law. This means that even if you are flying from a state where THC vapes are legal, to another state with the same laws, you are still subject to federal law while in the airports and during the flight.

This means that there is huge risk involved with flying with your favorite cannabis products.

It is okay to travel with a dry herb vape or cannabis vaporizer, provided that it does not contain any cannabis residue of any kind.

The catch here is that it can be hard to ensure that your device is completely residue free, especially if it’s a device that you use all the time. That being said, the safest and best idea is to leave your cannabis vape at home.

If you are flying to a country where marijuana is illegal, you can land yourself in huge trouble by bringing weed, THC vapes, or THC cartridges.   Traveling with THC vapes or cartridges is not advisable. The best idea is to leave your THC and cannabis related products at home.

Can you vape on an airplane?

No, you cannot vape on an airplane. There is absolutely no airline that allows the use of vapes and e-cigarettes. In fact, you can be subject to some hefty fines for vaping on a plane, ranging from $2 to $4,000.

And just in-case it needs to be said: don’t try to outsmart the security systems. Tampering with the smoke detectors in the airplane toilets, which is a federal offense and will land you additional fines of up to $2,000.

This means you could face $6,000 worth of fines for vaping. The risk-reward ratio definitely isn’t worth it.

Another regulation to know is that you cannot charge your vape on an airplane either, so be sure to do this before you depart if you want to vape when you land at your destination.

Can you vape in an airport?

The answer is yes and no. Some airports do allow travelers to vape, but many do not. It’s recommended to either check with the specific airport ahead of time or keep an eye out for signage around the terminals. It’s very likely that you won’t be allowed to vape within the airport. In this case, some airports will have designated smoking areas that comply with local laws. These areas are typically vape-friendly.

Best Nicotine Alternatives for Traveling

NIIN Tobacco Free Nicotine Pouches

Knowing that you can’t vape on the plane and in some airports, many of us will need to make alternate arrangements if using vapes for smoking cessation. With some flights lasting over 10 hours, there will be possible signs of nicotine withdrawal for those who prefer high nicotine vapes or smoke cigarettes.

Thankfully, there are a number of great alternatives that will carry you over to your destination without having to worry about the discomforts we all get without our frequent hits of nicotine.

Nicotine gum, patches and even nicotine pouches like snus are all viable options when onboard an airplane. Again, it’s best to always check ahead of time with your specific airline, but as of writing there are no laws prohibiting any of these items. Just be sure to check the amount of these products you are legally allowed to enter your destination with.

Chewing tobacco is another alternative that you might consider, but this isn’t recommended. While you are allowed to freely move through TSA with chewing tobacco, problems can arise if you intend to use it during the flight. Chew isn’t discreet and, quite frankly, can be unpleasant for non-chewers. Again, if you do pack chewing tobacco, be sure to check the laws regulating it at your destination.

International Vaping Laws – Plan your trip!

There is always some degree of due diligence that international travelers need to do. Knowing the laws of a country before you even set foot within it can save you a lot of headache down the line. Vaping is no exception. With a complicated legal landscape on vaping in even the most progressive countries, it comes as no surprise that there are still countless countries that have strict vaping laws.

These laws can range from the prohibition of sale of vape products to even vaping itself being illegal. This is where planning can save you from heartbreak when you run out of supplies on a long trip. Do a bit of research on the country you are heading to and gauge the quantities of batteries, coils and vape juice you will need to sustain yourself. Don’t be the guy that has five bottles of liquid and plenty of batteries but can’t vape because they left their replacement coils at home.

If you are traveling to the EU, you should note that there is a limit of 20 mg/ml on vape juice. This means that even though your favorite brands might be available for purchase, they might be at a lower strength. So, if you find yourself preferring a higher strength liquid, you should pack this in advance as well.

The following list will give you an idea of vaping laws around the world. This list should not be solely relied on when traveling to these countries. Proper research into the vaping laws of the country should be done before bringing any vaping devices or eliquid with you.

Countries Where Vaping is Legal (There May be Restrictions)

  • Afghanistan
  • Canada — Limit of 20 mg/ml on vape juice sold.
  • Czech Republic
  • Indonesia – Subject to taxation.
  • Ivory Coast
  • Jamaica – Importation requires a government permit.
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Switzerland – Vaping ban was overturned in 2018 after a court appeal.
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom — L imit of 20 mg/ml on vape juice sold.
  • United States

Countries Where Vaping is Banned

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia – Vaping itself is legal. However, the sale or importation of nicotine containing e-liquid is illegal. Apart from pharmacies dispensing nicotine vaping to patients with a prescription, it is illegal for any other Australian retailers, including vape stores, to sell nicotine vaping products.
  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Cambodia – Completely banned.
  • Gambia – Completely banned.
  • India – Completely banned.
  • Japan – Electronic cigarette cartridges and devices for atomizing liquids are regarded as medical devices. When importing these, only one device (or two if a spare one is required) can be cleared through the customs clearance. If you wish to bring ejuice into Japan, the amount that can be cleared by customs is up to 120 ml (liquid).
  • N. Korea – Completely banned.
  • Lebanon – Completely banned.
  • Nicaragua – Completely banned.
  • Qatar – Completely banned.
  • Singapore – Completely banned. Possession is also a crime and can carry a fine of up to $1500.
  • Thailand – If you are found with vaping devices or eliquid they may be confiscated and you could be fined or sent to prison for up to 10 years if convicted. Their sale or supply is also banned and you could face a heavy fine or up to 5 years imprisonment if found guilty.
  • Timor-Leste
  • Turkmenistan
  • Vatican City – Completely banned.

Guide To Vaping

Traveling With Your Vape: All You Need To Know

Blake Brown

Everyone has their reason to travel. But whether you’re traveling for pleasure or business, traveling is exhilarating. However, traveling as a vape enthusiast is a different thing. It’s all fun until you’re stopped at the airport.

Most airlines don’t allow vaping accessories, and even those that allow have placed rules for travelers to follow. In some countries, vaping is illegal. Therefore, doing the necessary due diligence will save you the trouble.

If it’s your first time traveling, then you might find understanding the rules challenging. Besides, flying rules are continually changing. But no need to worry because we are here to help.

In this article, we bring you all you need to know and answer your questions about traveling with your vaping accessories.

Can I Fly With MY Vape Device?

Woman Vaping Vape Pen

In most countries where vaping is legal, traveling with your vape gear is allowed but under certain rules. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), you can only travel with your vaping accessories in carry-on bags. That means storing them on checked bags is prohibited.

Your e-cig, atomizer, vape pen, vaporizer, or e-juice should be appropriately stored in a vape case for transport in the aircraft cabin. However, this doesn’t mean you can bring any vape accessories with you. What you carry will be verified at security checkpoints.

To pass the inspection, make sure to:

  • Avoid carrying more vape juice than allowed.
  • Disconnect the vape device battery. It’s advisable to keep them in a battery case to avoid contact with metal objects, causing a fire.
  • Empty the vape tank to avoid leakages in the plane.

Can I Carry Vape Juice on an Airplane?

You can carry about any type of vaping tool on a plane, and that includes vape juice. However, the vape juice should meet certain criteria for safety purposes. Here are some of the safety regulations you should adhere to:

  • You should carry the vape juice in carry-on luggage.
  • If you keep the vape juice in your checked luggage, then store it in a Ziploc bag for better protection.
  • Bring less than 100ml of e-liquid in your carry-on bag. Any extra amounts should be kept in your checked bag. But you may need permission to carry the extra vape juice or other vaping materials.
  • Avoid carrying more than 3.4 ounces of e-juice.
  • Put all liquid in clear see-through bags.
  • Avoid carrying the ejuice on fragile bottles that can break from the build-up of pressure.
  • You can’t carry e-liquid with more than 20 mg/mL of nicotine in the EU, Israel, and the UK.

Can I Vape in the Airport?

Just like smoking, most airports don’t allow vaping. However, some airports have designated vaping zones. That means if you smoke in a non-designated area, then you may face some penalties. So, whether you can smoke in the airport depends on your airport’s rules and regulations.

Where vaping in the airport is illegal, the chances are high that you can’t vape on board. The airplanes are even designed to detect any matter denser than air. Patience is key, don’t give in to the temptation of dashing to the washroom to vape.

Vaping policies vary from one airline to another, even if vaping is legal in the country. The best way to avoid getting in trouble is to inquire with them in advance. You can also visit their website to check out their traveling policies.

Even if you’ve traveled with the airline before, make sure to check the current policies. The rules change and where vaping was legal before may be illegal now, or the other way. It’s essential to do adequate research before the due dates to avoid clashing with the law.

How Can I Travel With Vaping Gear to Other Countries?

Vaping in the U.S. is different from most countries. Traveling with your vape accessories is much easier here. In fact, vaping laws and smoking laws are almost similar. That means mist places that allow smoking also allow vaping. Most vape and smoking products can also be bought from the same place.

However, that’s not the case in some countries. Most of them have enacted strict laws on vaping and tend to be lenient on smoking. But still, vaping laws differ between countries. Here’s a roundup of some of the vaping laws in different countries:

  • Vaping is illegal in Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, and India.
  • Vaping in Norway, Australia, and Japan is legal, but selling nicotine vape juice is prohibited. However, some of the countries allow the importation of e-liquid for personal use.
  • Most counties prohibit vaping in public places.

If you’re traveling to a foreign country, it’s your responsibility to be familiar with the local vaping policies. Most of the countries where vaping is illegal will confiscate your vape gear at the entry points and even penalize you. Vaping laws are constantly changing across the world; that’s why you should research thoroughly before traveling.

How to Travel by Train, Bus, Ship or Car with Your Vape Gear

Even when not traveling by plane, there are guidelines to follow. Here are some of the things you should do:

  • Wrap the vape gear with a towel for extra protection.
  • Keep the vape juice where you can easily access it.
  • Use the original packaging when storing the items.

Generally, vaping is not allowed when traveling with other passengers. So, you may not be allowed to vape on the bus or train station.

Cruise ships generally use the same policy as with smoking. The rules depend on the cruise company. Some have designated areas where you can smoke or vape.

There are fewer restrictions when traveling in a personal car. However, you should avoid acts that might endanger other road users like refilling the device when driving.

If you treasure vaping, there’s no need to worry about air travel. Flying by plane is straightforward when you adhere to the rules. Although you can bring your vape gear on board, TSA has strict rules to enhance travelers’ safety.

These are some of the things that you need to keep in mind before and when traveling by air. To avoid troubles and delays, make sure to do proper research on your airline’s vaping rules and the country you’re visiting. Once through with that, you can be guaranteed of smooth traveling experience with your vape accessories.

Vaping Travel Guide: All You Need To Know About Travelling With A Vape

There are many rules that must be followed when travelling abroad with a vape or e-liquids. Many airlines and airports have certain restrictions on what is allowed in your luggage and where you are allowed to vape in the airport.

At SmokShop, we endeavour to give all you need to know about travelling with a vape and the restrictions you have to follow. We recommend you double check with your travelling company, as well as the relevant authorities, before travelling to ensure that our information is still applicable.

Table of contents

Can you travel with a vape, can you vape on a plane or in an airport, uk airport policies on vaping, airline policies on vaping, countries that have banned or restricted vaping.

Travelling with a vape is allowed as long as any vapes or vaping accessories you take are kept in your carry-on bag. Vapes and other electronics are a fire hazard if kept in the plane hold as they contain lithium-ion batteries. Emptying your vape tank is recommended before boarding your flight, as changes to air pressure can cause these tanks to leak.

Any e-liquids you take in your carry-on luggage will count towards liquid regulations. All liquids you take in your carry-on luggage must be 100ml or under and stored inside a clear plastic bag which is 20cm x20cm. Disposable vapes are allowed on planes but must be placed in the plastic bag where you keep your toiletries. As disposable vapes can’t be taken apart and contain e-liquid, they count towards any liquid restrictions.

Vaping is prohibited on planes, with some planes having been known to arrest passengers on flights. If caught vaping on a plane, you will most likely receive a fine. Ryanair allows the use of smokeless e-cigarettes they sell on board; however they are not as powerful as a normal vape.

Many UK airports have implemented restrictions on vaping; however some airports allow vaping in designated smoking areas. You should check the airport’s policy around vaping before you leave.

Many airports have different policies regarding vaping, with some allowing vaping in designated areas whilst others have banned it completely. Read below to find out about the vaping policies in some of the UK’s busiest airports.

  • Heathrow Airport – Vaping is allowed in the designated smoking areas outside the terminal buildings. E-cigarettes are forbidden inside any terminal building.
  • Gatwick Airport – Vaping is allowed in the designated smoking areas outside both terminals but not inside the North or South terminals.
  • Manchester Airport – The use of e-cigarettes is banned anywhere inside the airport. Terminal 1 has a designated smoking area near the food court, and Terminal 2 has one in the departure lounge. Terminal 3 has no designated smoking area.
  • Stansted Airport – Vaping has been banned inside Stansted Airport since August 2014.
  • Luton Airport – There is a designated smoking area near the front entrance, but you can’t vape anywhere within the airport.
  • Leeds Bradford Airport – Vaping is allowed in the designated smoking areas. There is one smoking area inside the terminal and one outside before passing through security.
  • Edinburgh Airport – The use of vapes is only permitted in the designated outside the terminal building.
  • Birmingham Airport – Vaping is only allowed in the designated smoking areas outside the front of the terminal. Vaping is not allowed within the airport.
  • Bristol Airport – Vaping is allowed within the designated smoking areas.
  • Glasgow Airport – The only designated smoking area where vaping is allowed is outside the main terminal before security.
  • Newcastle Airport – Vaping is allowed in the designated smoking areas at the front of the terminal. There are two designated smoking areas once passing through security.
  • East Midlands Airport – Vaping has been banned inside the terminal since August 2014.
  • Norwich Airport – Vaping is allowed in the designated smoking shelter at the front of the terminal.

As with airports, many airlines have certain restrictions about travelling with vapes. You are not allowed to vape on the plane under any circumstances. Below will highlight the vaping restrictions set out by some of the most popular airlines.

  • British Airways – You must take e-cigarettes in your carry-on luggage and any e-liquids must be limited to 100ml and stored in a clear plastic bag.
  • EasyJet – E-cigarettes and a maximum of two spare batteries are allowed in your cabin bag but not hold luggage.
  • Emirates – E-cigarettes and spare batteries must be packed in your cabin bag and any liquids must not exceed 100ml and packed in a clear plastic bag.
  • Jet 2 – Passengers must carry any e-cigarettes in their cabin luggage. E-liquids must not exceed 100ml and must be stored in a clear plastic bag.
  • Qatar Airways – E-cigarettes must be stored in cabin luggage and liquids must not be larger than 100ml.
  • Qantas – E-cigarettes are permitted to be carried in cabin luggage only and you are not allowed to take more than 20 batteries onboard.
  • Ryanair – You can take e-cigarettes in your cabin luggage and e-liquids should be included in your carry-on liquid allowance.
  • TUI – Any e-liquids must be packed in a clear plastic bag and count towards your liquid allowance. Any batteries should be kept in your hand luggage.
  • Virgin Atlantic – Batteries must be packed in your hand luggage and any e-liquids you bring on-board should be placed in a clear plastic bag.

Tobacco, E-Cigarettes or Marijuana

Review the following guidelines to make sure you’re prepared to travel with these prohibited or restricted items.

E-CIGARETTES

Battery-powered electronic smoking devices, such as “e-cigarettes, e-cigs, e-cigars, e-pipes, e-hookahs, personal vaporizers, electronic nicotine delivery systems,” can be brought as carry-on items only. They may be carried by passengers or crew members and are for personal use only. Using or recharging the device while on board the aircraft is not permitted.

We recommend (1) traveling with them in a protected carry-case to prevent damage and/or unintentional activation and (2) researching the customs laws of other countries regarding the use of e-cigarettes, as certain countries may restrict and/or completely ban the import, export, or use of electronic cigarettes.

Delta is not responsible for items confiscated by local authorities.

Although Delta Air Lines is aware of various state laws that allow recreational or medical marijuana possession, the TSA has stated that possession of marijuana, even medical marijuana, is illegal under federal law and that it will refer passengers traveling with marijuana to law enforcement authorities. Accordingly, Delta Air Lines does not allow passengers to transport marijuana on our flights.

Can You Bring Delta 8 on a Plane? Current TSA Policy

As a regular user, it may seem natural to bring delta 8 products along wherever you travel. Maybe you just aren’t in the mood to abstain for a few days. You might also use delta 8 THC to help you sleep or as a travel-related stress aid.

Traveling with cannabis has always been a minefield. If your product contains over the limit of 0.3% delta 9 THC, it’s illegal to carry over state lines. This also applies to medical marijuana. Legal cardholder or not, marijuana is federally a Schedule I drug. You can’t fly with it on hand, even if your destination has legal weed.

While you probably won’t be arrested for bringing delta 8 carts on an airplane, there are some major caveats. Any hemp product you bring on a US flight can be confiscated at the discretion of a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employee.

The legality of hemp is still complicated. While the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived products containing less than 0.3% THC, not everyone understands the ins and outs of this loophole—including TSA agents. International travelers have no legal protection either. Anyone can find themselves in a tough situation if found in possession of cannabis products .

Current TSA delta 8 policy (2023)

United States hemp laws have evolved rapidly, and so have policies issued by national and global institutions. Staying up to date can prevent accidental violations.

As of August 2023, the TSA’s “What can I bring?” checklist doesn’t directly reference delta 8 or most hemp products. CBD oils are mentioned , as some contain over the federal limit of THC. However, airline passengers may still run into problems with delta 8 THC.

TSA employees don’t check bags specifically looking for drugs, marijuana, or paraphernalia. But just because agents aren’t going out of their way to search for something, don’t assume they won’t notice it. Oil carts or a small tincture bottle may be enough to pique suspicion.

Hemp products are a gray area within the TSA’s policies. Although they’re not addressed in any public documentation, airport employees will use their own discretion when assessing passengers’ belongings. For the smoothest ride, leave any cannabis products at home, including non-intoxicating substances like CBD .

Agents are required to contact local authorities if they discover marijuana and delta 9 derivatives in a passenger’s luggage. Hemp may be falsely flagged, leading to an ordeal that no one has time for during their trip.

Canna River D8 Highlighter

Nothing beats two grams of premium delta 8 distillate wrapped in a sleek package. The D8 Highlighter by Canna River is produced from non-GMO hemp and packed with flavorful, USP grade terpenes. With 17 available strains, there’s a blend for everyone. This rechargeable pen balances flavor, potency, and affordability.

Flying with delta 8: other precautions

TSA hemp policies (or lack thereof) aside, airline passengers also need to be aware of state-specific laws, as well as airline policies. It doesn’t appear that any major U.S. airlines have hemp policies yet, but they may have additional rules regarding vape carts , disposables, and certain types of products.

Psychoactive hemp is federally legal under the Farm Bill, but states still have the final say in the matter. If you’re flying into a state with restrictions on delta 8, avoid traveling with carts or edibles.

Play it safe and keep delta 8 products out of your luggage. It’s the easiest way to save yourself a headache at the airport. You’re better off buying new delta 8 oil or edibles at your destination. Check ahead to ensure that D8 is legal in that state or country you’re flying to, then pick up the products after arrival.

Those who do opt to fly with delta 8 will want to have the original packaging or product information on hand. It’s counterintuitive on the surface, but transparency is in your best interest. Unmarked products are only going to look more suspicious if discovered by an agent.

All reputable hemp manufacturers will provide a detailed description of the product’s cannabinoid content, including the exact amounts of delta 8 and delta 9 THC.

Dos and don’ts of traveling with delta 8

We don’t recommend bringing cannabis products of any kind on a flight. Delta 8 is legally evolving, and possession could cause problems with the TSA and local law enforcement, even if an arrest is unlikely. It’s up to you whether or not to take that risk.

You’re not explicitly breaking federal law or TSA policy by bringing delta 8 on a domestic flight, but it’s a gamble. Here are the procedures you’ll need to follow in doing so.

Carts and disposable vapes

Yes, you can fly with vape carts . Flyers must abide by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations if they’re looking to travel with vaping equipment of any kind.

First and foremost, you can’t store delta 8 disposables or vape pens in your checked luggage. These products must come on the plane with you, either in your carry-on or personal storage. Certain devices powered by a lithium battery need to stay on your person during a flight, as well as all uninstalled batteries. Disposable vapes and 510 thread batteries are subject to this rule, which is a precaution against fire.

Vape carts can be stored with the rest of your liquids in a quart-sized bag. There’s a chance that carts will leak under pressure, so don’t let a mess catch you off guard. Partially used carts are the safest bet. Consult our article on flying with vapes for more suggestions.

Gummies and edibles

Solid food items and candy are permitted in both checked and carry-on luggage.

A few delta 8 gummies might escape the attention of TSA agents, but remember, drug sniffing dogs can identify them as a cannabis product. There’s still a chance that you’ll raise suspicion. Nondescript edibles aren’t a flawless workaround, as innocent as they appear.

It’s possible that gummies will wind up in the garbage despite your best efforts. Don’t carry hemp products of any kind if you’re not prepared to lose them. You might lose several hours being questioned by local police, too—especially if you try to conceal the content of your edibles.

Anyone who’s flown knows the TSA’s liquids policy by heart: containers can be no more than 100 mL (3.4 ounces) each, and they must be sealed inside a quart-sized plastic bag. Delta 8 tinctures are required to follow these guidelines.

As we’ll get into later, there have been at least two instances of travelers being arrested over hemp tinctures. Maybe that was bad luck, or maybe tincture bottles are more likely to catch the eye of TSA agents. We can’t say for sure, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Can you take delta 8 on an international flight?

There’s no short answer here. Regardless of U.S. law or the TSA’s hemp policies, you’ll need to review the laws of your destination country too. We cannot stress this enough. Laws around marijuana, hemp, and their derivatives vary hugely between nations.

Some countries, such as Canada, are more lenient than the U.S. There are also plenty of areas across the globe where cannabis products are outlawed, and the punishment for possession or trafficking can be severe.

International travelers found with delta 8 might find themselves detained after arrival. Unlike in the United States, this situation can quickly lead to dire, long-term legal trouble. Citizens of a country with legal hemp aren’t protected on foreign soil.

Will you be arrested for bringing D8 on a plane?

Arrests at the airport did occur in the early days of federally legal hemp. Shortly after the 2018 Farm Bill’s passage, misunderstandings about hemp and its legal standing were even more rife than they are today. Just don’t expect TSA agents to be experts in cannabis law.

One infamous case involved a 71-year-old woman traveling to Oregon. She was arrested at a North Texas airport after non-intoxicating CBD oil was found in her travel bag. A similar instance happened at the same Texas airport, also back in 2019. A 22-year-old student ran into problems after a bottle of CBD oil was found in their possession . It’s not clear if the latter case led to an arrest.

It’s not known whether similar issues have occurred since then. If so, nothing appears to have been publicized. What we do know is that hemp arrests at the airport can happen, no matter how uncommon.

Can you bring delta 8 on a bus or train?

Alternative methods of travel are an option, but major bus or railroad companies aren’t clear about their stance on hemp products. Again, delta 8 isn’t outright barred, but the guidelines are murky at best.

Like the TSA, Amtrak and Greyhound have no written hemp policies at all. These services sometimes involve fewer security hoops, so if that helps you feel more secure, it’s worth considering.

Be wary if your station uses dogs to sniff out security threats—it’s more common than you’d expect. This could lead to your delta 8 being flagged. Just as in an airport, you may be detained or told to dispose of your products.

Koi Delta 8 Gummies

Koi Delta 8 gummies contain 25 mg of hemp-derived D8, guaranteed to deliver a powerful, uplifting effect. The gummies come in 6, 20, and 60-packs and in five refreshing fruity flavor options. As always, Koi products are thoroughly tested by a third-party lab for potency and purity, ensuring high quality and consistency.

Traveling with delta 8 THC: the short of it

We don’t encourage doing it, but it’s the passenger’s choice whether they’d like to risk flying with delta 8 products, including carts and disposable vapes.

It’s technically not illegal to do so. Crossing state borders with marijuana could get you arrested on drug trafficking charges, but hemp isn’t federally prohibited. Hemp-derived products are federally legal under the most recent Farm Bill. These laws are still developing, though, and several states have passed their own. Some are stricter than the federal standard.

As a precaution, review the hemp or cannabis laws of your destination. This is especially crucial if you’re flying internationally; entering another country with illegal cannabis is a mess you don’t want to face.

There’s no official TSA policy on hemp. Each agent uses discretion to permit, confiscate, or dispose of particular products. If an airport employee finds your delta 8 and asks you to throw it in the garbage, do as they’ve requested. It’s not worth missing your flight (or worse) over a vape cart.

Travelling with Vapes: What You Need to Know

Travelling with Vapes: What You Need to Know

Are you a vaper planning to embark on an exciting journey abroad? As you pack your bags, don't forget to consider the ins and outs of travelling with your beloved e-cigarette.

From knowing where e-cigarettes are allowed to understanding how to pack them securely, we've got you covered. In this article, we'll explore the essential information that new and advanced vapers need to know before taking off on their next adventure.

Why Take Your Vape Abroad?

For many enthusiastic vapers, the answer is probably, ‘why not?’

People vape for many reasons , primarily as a way of quitting cigarettes for good. You may vape to avoid the nicotine cravings or you might have gradually reduced your nicotine consumption over time and now only use nicotine-free e-liquid in your vape kit. For many people, vaping is a great way to relax and chill out, while for others it's a fun hobby and form of self-expression.

This is all to say that if you enjoy vaping, the likelihood is that you'll want to take your vape kit with you when you travel abroad!

However, unlike in the UK, some countries have strict rules about vaping so it's important to know the laws before you set off to your destination with your vape kit tucked in your luggage.

Understanding the Rules: Where are E-Cigarettes Allowed?

Before you embark on your vaping adventure, it's crucial to be aware of the regulations surrounding e-cigarettes in your destination country. While e-cigarette laws vary from one place to another, many countries have embraced vaping as a popular alternative to traditional smoking. However, it's always wise to check the local laws and regulations of your destination to avoid any unexpected surprises.

There are 35 countries that have some kind of ban or regulations around electronic cigarettes, including Australia, Japan, and Mexico. Therefore, it's important that you carefully research the laws in the country you will be visiting to make sure that you abide by all regulations.

Countries Where E-Cigarettes Are Illegal

There are some countries in the world where electronic cigarettes are completely illegal and anyone who brings their vape kit into the country can face a large fine or even prison time. Some countries where e-cigarettes are completely illegal include:

In fact, being caught using an e-cigarette in Thailand can be punished with up to 10 years in jail. It's simply not worth the risk, so make sure you do your research thoroughly before you set off on your travels.

Countries Where Electronic Cigarettes are Restricted

Fortunately, e-cigarette use is permitted in many countries worldwide, although it's important to check the laws in the country you are travelling to because many have restrictions on vaping.

For example, taking your vape kit to Türkiye is permitted but it's illegal to buy or sell e-cigarettes within the country, so make sure you have all the coils and vape juice you need before you cross the border.

The laws around vaping vary from state to state in Australia, with some states being stricter than others. For example, using e-liquid that contains nicotine without a prescription from a doctor is illegal in some parts of the country.

Vaping Etiquette Abroad

One thing that's important to consider when taking your favourite starter kit or pod kit abroad is the cultural norms and attitudes towards e-cigarettes that may exist in your destination. While vaping has gained popularity in many parts of the world, it's essential to be respectful of the local customs and practices when indulging in your vaping passion abroad.

In some places, vaping may be seen as intrusive or disrespectful in certain public spaces. To avoid causing discomfort or inconvenience, it's important to be mindful of your surroundings and stick to designated smoking areas.

If you're in a social setting, such as someone's home or a private establishment, it's always polite to seek permission before vaping. Just as you would ask if it's acceptable to smoke a traditional cigarette, extending the same courtesy for your vape shows respect for others' preferences and maintains a friendly atmosphere.

Packing Your Vape: Tips and Tricks

When it comes to packing your vape gear, a little bit of organisation goes a long way. Here are some handy tips to ensure that your vape kits and e-liquids remain safe and secure in your baggage during your travels:

Disassemble Your E-Cigarette

Before packing your vape, make sure to disassemble it. This first step applies to vape kits and pod kits, rather than disposable vapes which cannot be taken apart.

Separate the battery, tank, and any other detachable parts. This will help prevent accidental activation and leakage during transit.

We also recommend emptying your vape tank to reduce the risk of spills in your luggage.

Store E-Liquids Appropriately

E-liquid bottles should be tightly sealed and placed in a clear plastic bag to comply with airport security regulations. Remember to double-check the liquid capacity allowed in your carry-on luggage to avoid any issues at security checkpoints.

Protect Your Batteries

Store your batteries in a dedicated battery case or wrap them in non-conductive material to prevent accidental contact with metal objects. This step ensures the safety of your batteries and minimises the risk of fire hazards.

Carry Spare Coils

If you're using a vape kit that requires coils , it's wise to carry a few spare coils with you. Coils have a limited lifespan, and having extras ensures uninterrupted vaping pleasure throughout your journey.

Research Local Vape Shops

It's always a good idea to research local vape shops at your destination. This way, you can rest assured that you'll have access to replacement parts, e-liquids, and expert advice should the need arise.

Taking Vapes on Planes: What You Need to Know

If you're wondering whether you can take your vape gear on a plane, the answer is generally yes, but with a few important considerations:

Carry-On vs. Checked Luggage

Many airlines stipulate that vape kits should be kept in hand luggage instead of checked luggage in the cargo hold. Keeping your vape gear in your carry-on luggage is also beneficial to travellers because you can keep an eye on your valuable equipment throughout the journey.

Follow Airline Regulations

Different airlines may have specific rules regarding the transportation of e-cigarettes. Check the guidelines provided by your airline to ensure compliance. Remember, knowledge is power, and knowing the rules can save you from potential hassles.

Airlines like Wizz Air and Jet2 specify that electronic cigarettes must be kept in your carry-on baggage only. The e-cigarettes or batteries should not be recharged while on the aircraft.

No Vaping on the Plane

While you can bring your vape on the plane, it's important to note that vaping is strictly prohibited during flights. Respect the rules and refrain from vaping until you've safely disembarked.

Vaping In The Airport

While you cannot use your e-cigarette inside the airport, vaping is usually permitted in smoking areas. More than half of UK airports have complete cigarette smoking and vaping bans after travellers pass through security , so get your fix in before you go through security!

Travelling With Disposable E-Cigarettes

We've mostly looked at travelling with vape kits such as your favourite pod kit or starter kit, but what if you're a disposable vape user? First of all, we recommend upgrading to a reusable vape kit for a more cost-effective and high quality vaping experience. Travelling with disposable e-cigarettes can be a headache because they may take up a lot of room in your luggage and disposing of them responsibly can be a challenge when abroad.

However, if you're determined to stick with disposable electronic cigarettes, here's what you need to know about travelling with them.

Some airlines do not allow people to travel with disposable e-cigarettes, but if they are permitted on your airline disposable vapes should be kept in your hand luggage like vape kits. They should be kept in a clear plastic bag and you should be careful not to activate them.

Moreover, some countries have banned disposable vapes entirely so it's important to carry out careful research before you take your vape abroad.

Final Thoughts for Vapers on the Go

Travelling with your e-cigarettes can be an enjoyable and hassle-free experience if you keep a few key points in mind. Remember to research the vaping laws of your destination, pack your vape gear carefully, and follow the airline regulations. By doing so, you can embark on your journey with peace of mind, knowing that you can continue to enjoy your vaping experience wherever you go.

So, whether you're a fan of Vaporesso , VooPoo , Geekvape , or Uwell , pack your bags, charge your batteries, and get ready for an adventure filled with flavour and clouds. Bon voyage, fellow vapers!

Traveling with Your Vape or E-Cigarette Abroad

Traveling with Your Vape or E-Cigarette Abroad

Traveling with a vape or e-cigarette is a lot easier than you think. All it takes are some simple dos and don'ts to help you pass airport security and pack your vape for travel. You can find this information in our quick guide below!

First, Airport Terminology

What would your vape device be defined as when looking at travel laws and websites of airports and airlines? You might find any of the following terms listed in the rules.

Atomizers, Vape Pens, Vaporizers , Vape Mods , E-cigarettes , Electronic cigarettes, Battery-powered E-cigarettes, and Electronic nicotine delivery systems.

Wow. Well, here is the general short version of it all…

Is It Okay to Bring a Vape or E-cigarettes on a Plane?

The answer is yes. But, you must have it with you in carry-on luggage.

If you are flying from within Canada, you may carry a vape or e-cigarette aboard the plane. You may find an official statement here with the CATSA official guidelines for e-cigs <https://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/en/item/electronic-cigarettes-or-e-cigarettes-and-e-cigarette-accessories> that you may have your vape device along with you in carry-on baggage.

Both the United States TSA and CATSA do not allow these devices to be in checked luggage. That goes for both passengers and crew members. The reason being is that the device poses a fire risk. Such is the same policy for laptops and devices that have high-power rechargeable batteries.

It is safer to have the device with you in your handbag or carry-on. Remember not to put it in your checked bags.

What About the Rules for Liquids?

For those who use refills and vape juice , the guidelines follow along with it being considered a liquid, even if it is a prepackaged pod such as JUUL.

You are allowed to bring your refills with you on the plane. All containers, be they refills or pods, must be smaller than 100mL or 3.4 ounces.

Do check with the airline for any detailed questions or specifics.

Is it Okay to Vape on the Plane?

Absolutely not. Don't try. Don't sneak it.

Vaping is treated just as if you were smoking a real cigarette. The penalties and the risks are not worth it.

Worse even is if passengers on the plane see clouds of vapor and panic because they believe something to be on fire. Then there is a lot of trouble and headaches you don't want to get into.

Pack it. Please don't use it.

How to Pack Your Device and Accessories

Here are a few more helpful things to know.

First, CATSA does not require you to take your device out of your bag or carry-on case during screening. Enough is going on already in the security lines, so that is nice.

Put your pen or device in a cushioned or protective pouch of its own, then place it inside your carry-on. Once more, NEVER put your device in your checked luggage.

Liquid refills and accessories are treated just like other liquids. You may put them in the same bag as toiletries. Remember bottle size.

Extra batteries are okay, but the rules can be a little tricky. Batteries are allowed in your carry-on, but you should only bring one or two as extras. This is more about attention during the security checkpoints.

Each country will have rules for vaping. Be sure to check with the local laws of your destination before traveling. Thailand is one country, for example, where it's been banned for almost a decade. Please don't bring your vape device with you anywhere that you'll get in trouble simply for having it in your possession. Getting caught could mean a hefty fine and even serving a jail sentence. Other countries have regulations as well that are very strict, such as Brazil, Lebanon, Vietnam, Cambodia, and more. You may undoubtedly travel with your devices to the United States and the United Kingdom.

Enjoy Your Travel and Be Safe

We hope these quick tips help you feel comfortable traveling with your vape or E-cigarettes . Take a few simple precautions and treat the rules and policies with respect, and you should have no problems!

Drake Equation

Can You Bring Vape Juice On A Plane

If you’re a new vaper and are traveling soon, you might be wondering if you can bring vape juice on a plane? Here’s everything you need to know…

If you have a trip coming up and you haven’t traveled with your vape gear before, you might be feeling a little antsy about it – can you even take a vape device on a plane, let along vape juice?

First of all, relax: you can take ALL of your vape gear with you when you travel on a plane , you just have to know how to do it correctly and, most importantly, what you can and cannot do.

Let’s start with vape juice.

Can You Take Vape Juice on a Plane?

When it comes to taking vape juice on a plane, this is the simplest aspect of traveling with your vape gear. You can take vape juice onboard a plane in both your carry-on bags as well as your checked bags and luggage.

HOWEVER, you can ONLY bring up to 100ml of vape juice on a flight – and that includes in all your bags, carry-on, and checked.

Can You Bring Vape Juice On A Plane-1

For this reason, you’re best off bring a selection (of up to 10) 10ml vape juice bottles and keeping them on your person when flying. This way you’ll know exactly where they are at all times.

Another tip? Do not open your vape juice bottles, keep them sealed. The reason for this is simple. The pressure inside an airplane will cause open bottles of vape juice to leak – and you do not want that.

So always travel with fresh, unopened bottles of vape juice. This goes for your vape device too: make sure it is 100% empty before you get on the plane. If you don’t, the vape will leak in your pocket and cause a right mess.

How Much Vape Juice Can I Take on A Plane?

  • Hand-Luggage & Carry-On Bags – up to 100ml of vape juice
  • Checked Bags & Luggage – Up to 100ml of vape juice. And make sure it is in plastic bottles too; glass bottles are considered a safety hazard.

Most airlines recommend that passengers place bottles in a quart-sized clear zip-lock bag. You will have to do this before boarding the plane, usually when you go through security.

Airlines That Have BANNED Vape Juice & Vapes

When traveling with vape juice, you need to make sure that vaping is legal in the country you’re traveling to. For instance, vaping is illegal in Hong Kong and it is illegal to carry vapes on ANY plane going to or from Hong Kong.

I learned this lesson the hard way a couple of years back and was nearly arrested on my flight out of Hong Kong for having a couple of vape pens and vape juice on me. I got away with it, but plenty of people don’t – so always plan ahead.

FlyBe also prohibits ANY of its passengers from bringing vapes or vape juice on its planes.

TSA Guidelines on Vape Juice & Vape Products

Here’s the official line from the TSA on what vape products you can and cannot bring onto a plane in the United States:

The FAA prohibits these devices in checked bags. Battery-powered E-cigarettes, vaporizers , vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems may only be carried in the aircraft cabin (in carry-on baggage or on your person). Check with your airline for additional restrictions. Remove all electronic cigarette and vaping devices from carry-on bags if checked at the gate or planeside – TSA .

As always, if you’re concerned about what you can and cannot bring with you, just give your airline a call. They will be able to quickly tell you what you can and cannot bring.

I’ve traveled pretty extensively in the past five years and, with the exception of my incident in Hong Kong, I haven’t had any issues with traveling with my vape gear.

My advice for anyone about to travel with a vape would be to take a pod vape , a selection of 10ml vape juice bottles, and keep them all in your carry-on luggage.

And before you ask, no, you’re not allowed to vape on planes. If you do, you could get yourself arrested and/or fined.

If you are caught vaping on a flight then you could face heavy fines or be banned from the airline. Last year, a man was banned from flying with Spirit Airlines for life after using his e-cigarette in the bathroom, leading to an emergency landing of the plane – The Sun

The Ultimate Guide to Flying with Disposable Vapes: What You Need to Know

The Ultimate Guide to Flying with Disposable Vapes: What You Need to Know

Understanding disposable vapes, packing your vaping gear, airport security and tsa regulations, flying with disposable vapes airline policies, vaping device maintenance.

In recent years, the vaping industry has witnessed a significant shift towards convenience, with disposable vapes gaining immense popularity among users. These compact, user-friendly devices have become the go-to choice for many vapers, especially those who are constantly on the move. As more people turn to disposable vape pens like Elf Bar and Puff Bar, questions about traveling with these devices have also surged. This ultimate guide aims to provide you with all the essential information you need to know when flying with disposable vapes, ensuring that your air travel experience remains hassle-free.

This post is intended as information and for general knowledge only. It is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. It is recommended that you talk to a healthcare professional about this before introducing cannabinoids into your daily routine (especially if you have been diagnosed with any medical conditions or are under any medication). It is not recommended to drive or operate any machinery when using cannabis- or hemp-derived products. Use responsibly!

The allure of disposable vape pens lies in their simplicity. Unlike traditional vape kits that require maintenance and refilling, disposable vape pens offer an easy and convenient way to enjoy your favorite vape juice or nicotine salt blends without the hassle of upkeep. However, taking these devices on an airplane can be a different story altogether. With airport security regulations and airline policies to consider, it’s crucial to be well-informed to avoid any potential issues during your journey.

Before we delve into the intricacies of flying with disposable vapes, it’s essential to recognize the distinctions between various vaping devices, understand how to pack them safely, navigate airport security, and stay compliant with airline rules. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a newbie in the vaping world, this comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge needed to enjoy your vaping experience while soaring through the skies.

Disposable vape pens A convenient choice

Disposable vape pens have gained immense popularity due to their simplicity and user-friendliness. These devices come pre-filled with vape juice and are designed for one-time use, eliminating the need for refilling or replacing coils. Brands like Elf Bar and Puff Bar offer a wide range of flavors, making them a favorite among vapers seeking hassle-free options.

Differentiating between disposable vapes and vape kits

It’s crucial to distinguish between disposable vape pens and traditional vape kits. Vape kits typically consist of a rechargeable vape pen or mod and a refillable vape tank. In contrast, disposable vape pens are all-in-one devices with no refillable components. Understanding this difference is essential when it comes to packing and traveling with your vaping gear.

Vape pods vape mods and vape tanks Variations in vaping devices

While disposable vape pens are the focus of this guide, it’s worth noting that there are other vaping devices on the market, such as vape pods, vape mods, and vape tanks. These devices offer customization options but come with additional complexity. For air travel, the simplicity of disposable vape pens often makes them the preferred choice.

Vape juice and nicotine pouches Essentials for vaping

Vaping is all about the flavors, and vape juice or e-liquid is the heart of the experience. When traveling with disposable vape pens, it’s important to ensure that you have enough vape juice for your journey. Additionally, some vapers prefer nicotine pouches as a discreet alternative to traditional cigarettes. Make sure you have your preferred nicotine source packed and ready for your trip.

Hand luggage or checked luggage The choice is yours

When it comes to packing your disposable vape device , you have a choice between carrying it in your hand luggage or checking it in your checked baggage. It’s generally recommended to keep your vaping gear in your hand luggage to prevent any potential issues with lithium batteries in the cargo hold. However, there are specific guidelines to follow for both options.

Lithium ion batteries A critical component

Disposable vape pens, like many electronic devices, are powered by lithium ion batteries. These batteries are safe for air travel, but there are essential precautions to keep in mind:

Safety precautions with lithium batteries

Ensure that your disposable vape device is turned off before packing it. To avoid accidental activation, consider removing the disposable pen’s battery , if possible. Store your lithium batteries in their original packaging or a protective case to prevent damage.

Accidental activation prevention

One common concern among travelers is accidental activation of their disposable vape pens. To prevent this, consider taking additional precautions such as disassembling the pen or placing it in a clear plastic bag to contain any potential leaks.

Electronic smoking devices and where to store them

When packing your disposable vape device, it’s essential to keep it in a readily accessible location in your hand luggage. This makes it easier to present the device to security if requested. Remember to follow the guidelines set by the airport and airline for the safe storage of electronic smoking devices.

Liquid containment Avoiding leaks and spills

To prevent any potential leaks or spills during your flight, make sure your disposable vape pen and vape juice are stored upright. Additionally, consider placing them in a sealable plastic bag to contain any leaks and protect your other belongings.

TSA regulations and electronic cigarettes

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has specific regulations in place for electronic cigarettes, including disposable vape pens. When going through airport security, follow these guidelines: Remove your disposable vape device from your bag and place it in a separate bin for screening. Inform the TSA agent if you have spare batteries or vape cartridges in your hand luggage. Be prepared for additional screening if the TSA deems it necessary.

Interactions with TSA agents

Cooperating with TSA agents during the security screening process is crucial to ensure a smooth journey. If you have any concerns or questions about traveling with your disposable vape pen, don’t hesitate to ask a TSA agent for guidance. Being polite and respectful can go a long way in making the process less stressful.

Electronic smoking devices in designated smoking areas

Some airports offer designated smoking areas where you can use your disposable vape pen before or after your flight. However, these areas are becoming less common due to the growing restrictions on smoking and vaping in public spaces. Always check with airport staff or consult airport signage to find the nearest smoking area.

Navigating international travel A case study on Hong Kong

When flying internationally, it’s essential to be aware of the vaping regulations in your destination country. As a case study, let’s look at Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the sale, possession, and use of nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes are illegal. Travelers found with such products can face severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment. It’s crucial to research and abide by the vaping regulations of your destination to avoid legal issues.

Air travel with British Airways

As airline policies regarding vaping devices may vary, it’s essential to check the rules of the airline you’re flying with. For example, British Airways allows passengers to carry electronic cigarettes, including disposable vape pens, in both hand luggage and checked baggage. However, the use of these devices is prohibited onboard.

Policies of other major airlines

While British Airways is just one example, other major airlines have their own policies when it comes to flying with disposable vapes. It’s advisable to visit the airline’s website or contact their customer service for specific information on their regulations. Always ensure that you comply with the rules of the airline you choose to avoid any potential inconveniences.

Tips for complying with airline rules

To ensure a smooth journey when flying with disposable vapes, here are some general tips:

Sharing is caring!

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you were caught flying with weed, you’re not alone because more and more people are asking, “What will happen if they get caught flying with a vape pen or flying with edibles?

With the increasing legalization of cannabis in many states, people want to know if they can take edibles on a plane.

Weed has been legalized fo r recreational purposes in 24 states as of December 23rd. Currently, 38 states (plus Washington, D.C., and three territories) allow marijuana possession for medical purposes.

Although these states have implemented legislation for their residents and visitors, marijuana still remains a federal offense as an illegal controlled substance, punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

This makes navigating the rules confusing when traveling from a state where marijuana is legally allowed to one where it’s not.

While flying with a weed pen can be tricky, it’s doable with the right approach!

Maybe you spent the weekend in Vegas  or decided to relax in Phoenix or Tempe, AZ , so of course, you stopped by one of the many dispensaries and picked up a “Lil something something” to take back home with you.

Understanding TSA Rules on Flying with Recreational Cannabis

The role of the transportation security administration is to stop dangerous items from getting inside airplane cabins.

When they scan carry-on bags, they mainly search for liquids (that could be flammable, safety hazards, or weapons that could be used on the plane.

The TSA doesn’t have any rules that refer directly to edibles, but some rules and procedures are essential to know about regarding flying with edibles.

Understanding if you can fly with weed can be confusing, especially when understanding the rules set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

While the legalization of cannabis is on the rise in many states, it’s important to remember that federal law still considers it illegal.

Therefore, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the TSA rules to avoid any potential problems or legal issues when traveling with weed, edibles, or other cannabis products.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that the TSA’s primary focus is on security threats, such as explosives and weapons.

According to its official policy, the TSA aims to identify and prevent potential security risks when passengers board an aircraft.

While they do not actively search for drugs, if they find them or if a drug-sniffing dog comes across them during the screening process, they are required to report it to law enforcement.

So, what does this mean for flying with cannabis? Well, according to the TSA, if TSA officers find marijuana or cannabis-infused products during the screening process, their policy is to notify local law enforcement.

The local law enforcement authorities decide whether to pursue criminal charges, which means you could go to jail or they could take your stash and let you go.

It’s worth noting that some airports, especially in states where cannabis is legal, have implemented policies that prioritize security over minor cannabis possession.

However, this varies from airport to airport, so it’s crucial to research the specific policies of the airports you’ll be traveling through.

When it comes to whether you can bring a THC vape pen on a plane, it’s essential to follow the same guidelines as traveling with any other cannabis product.

While certain states have eased restrictions on the use and possession of marijuana, travelers must recognize that federal law unequivocally forbids the importation of any quantity of this substance,” emphasized CBP El Paso Director of Field Operations Hector Mancha in a statement. “Under no circumstances should individuals attempt to cross the border with any amount of marijuana.”

On the other hand, for domestic travel to states with cannabis-friendly policies, the TSA permits the transportation of products containing 0.3% or less of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The TSA checkpoint allows passengers to carry vape pens on a plane, but they must be placed in carry-on baggage and cannot be used during the flight.

It’s also essential to ensure the vape pen complies with the airline’s regulations on the size and quantity of liquids or batteries allowed onboard.

TSA agents are not actively going to search your carry-on bag or personal item for marijuana, disposable vape pens, or any vape products, for that matter.

That should make you feel a little bit better if you were planning on bringing marijuana on a plane, but you still need to understand that you can still get busted for marijuana even in states that have legalized it.

In some airports, you may find so-called “amnesty boxes,” which are designed for you to drop your marijuana products into before heading through the airport.

Check out the TSA website , which states Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law ” per the TSA. This excludes products with less than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The rules and regulations before flying with weed or a THC Vape pen.

Can you fly with medical marijuana?

The same TSA rules apply to traveling with medical marijuana as with recreational marijuana.

Marijuana and cannabis-infused products, including some those with (CBD) oil, are also illegal under federal law,”  per the TSA . This does not include products with less than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Can you fly with cannabis-infused edibles?

Navigating the rules becomes more intricate when carrying cannabis-infused or THC products like oil, leaf marijuana, and edibles while traveling the friendly skies.

These items, still illegal under federal law, are strictly prohibited.

However, the landscape is nuanced for certain marijuana-derived substances. For instance, although CBD oil derived from hemp has been legal since 2018, the TSA maintains its prohibition on oil.

According to TSA regulations, vape pens are permissible in carry-on bags only, provided they do not contain lithium batteries exceeding 100 watt-hours.

It’s essential to note that if the vape pen cartridges carry THC, they are considered illegal at the federal level. On the other hand, marijuana paraphernalia, such as bowls or pipes, is allowed in carry-on luggage.

How to get weed through airport security

If you have joints, put them in a cigarette case and then put that cigarette case wherever you would typically put it.

If you are traveling with just the flower, empty any bottle of over-the-counter medication like Ibuprofen or purchase a smell-proof bag to put your weed in.

If you decide to use a medication bottle, put some cotton balls on top of the weed, then put ibuprofen on top of the cotton balls until the bottle is filled to the top.  No one will ever know!

Ladies put your edibles or pre-rolls in the OG Stash box, which looks like a makeup box.

Pack an extra purse, and when you are flying with your vape pen, put it in the zipper, but make sure the vape cartridge or vape batteries are not attached.

If you get caught with weed while traveling through the airport, nothing will happen to you other than the TSA will call local authorities, and the police will throw the weed out, and you will probably miss your flight.

As I stated above, TSA focuses on terrorism and security threats to the aircraft and its passengers.

TSA’s screening procedures, governed by federal law, are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers, not your small stash of weed.

Unless you are traveling with large amounts of weed or edibles, it will probably go undetected in the screening process.

When asked if you’re carrying marijuana, play dumb and say something like, I don’t know what you mean. Marijuana? Do you think I have drugs? No way! Don’t be ridiculous.

Tips for Flying with THC Vape Pens

If you’re planning to fly with weed, there are a few tips you should keep in mind to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Here are some essential things to consider:

1. Research the airline’s website : Before packing your vape devices , check the specific regulations of the airline you’ll be flying with. Airlines may have different rules and restrictions on the size and quantity of liquids or lithium batteries allowed on board. It’s always better to be informed to avoid any issues at the security checkpoint.

2. Carry your vaping devices in your carry-on bag: The TSA allows passengers to bring vape pens on a plane, but they must be placed in carry-on bags , not in checked luggage. This is because lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in vape pens, can pose a fire risk if damaged or overheated.

3. Remove the cartridge: To further comply with airline regulations and minimize any potential issues during the security screening process,

it’s advisable to remove the cartridge from your dab pen and pack it separately in a plastic bag. This will allow the security personnel to quickly identify it and prevent confusion or misunderstanding.

4. Turn off the vape pen: Ensure that your vape pen is turned off before boarding the plane. This is a safety precaution and a consideration for your fellow passengers. Vaping on an aircraft is prohibited, so it’s essential to refrain from using your vape pen during the flight.

5. Be discreet: While it’s legal to fly with a vape pen in some states, it’s still important to be discreet and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Keep your vape pen securely packed in your carry-on bag , and refrain from discussing it openly or displaying it in public.

By following these tips, you can navigate the rules and regulations surrounding flying with a THC vape pen and ensure a stress-free travel experience.

1. How Much Weed or Edibles Can You Fly With

Use common sense, please, folk!  Don’t fly a duffle bag full of edibles and flowers.

Buy only enough weed for your trip. If you’re in it for over three days, consider buying an ounce or less and putting it into multiple container s (for example, one in each pair of shoes).

Not only will that help you avoid overpacking, but it also means you can take advantage of TSA’s 3-ounce limit by removing what you need without getting rid of everything else.

It’s a federal crime. Only fly with how much you will need while you are traveling.  I suggest only flying with a small amount, which is considered one-eighth.

An eighth of weed by weight is an eighth of an ounce. For reference, an empty soda can weighs about half an ounce.

By grams, an eighth of an ounce weighs about 3.5 grams, just a bit more than the average penny, which weighs 3 grams.

pack edibles

2. Where should You Hide Your weed When flying?

If you don’t want weed in your carry-on luggage, bring an empty smell-proof bottle and fill it with weed, but my favorites are the smell-proof bags from Amazon.

You could then roll some plastic wrap into an egg shape and slip it inside the pill bottle before turning the top back on.

If you are packing edibles, you can put them in your carry-on or checked luggage. Purchase a bag of resealable Haribo gummies from Walgreens or any convenience store, empty the contents, and replace them with your edibles.

No one will know the difference because edibles, from sour apple gummies and mixed berries to mango gummy rounds, look precisely like candy.

No need to spend your entire flight nervous, looking around, and freaking out, thinking the police will be waiting on you once you land at your destination.

Carry-on bags are likely to go unsearched while we know TSA will randomly go through your luggage, and even if they do, how will they know the gummies are weed vs. regular candy you purchased to snack on while you are on vacation?

The same goes for hiding the flower as well.  TSA will probably not check your carry-on, so I suggest putting your flower buds in a smell-proof pouch or bottle, whether carrying or checking your luggage.

Put the smell-proof bottle in your makeup bag, and you are all set.  I promise you nobody is searching random pill bottles for weed of any kind.

3. Choosing Your Flight Time Wisely

Choosing an appropriate flight time is critical to sneaking weed onto a plane. A full flight means more people nearby, increasing your chances of being caught.

Avoid traveling between 11 am and 4 pm because that’s when most business travelers depart and arrive—and they’re unlikely to pay attention to whether you smell like weed.

4. Be Respectful of TSA Agents

While it’s understandable that you want to sneak your goods past TSA agents, there are ways to do so without being disrespectful to others.

With these six tips in mind, you should be able to take advantage of flying with weed—and still avoid getting into trouble with TSA.

5. Don’t Be Rude When Questioned

You may have every right to carry your weed, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be respectful and courteous when questioned by security.

If you are being questioned, do not get aggressive or rude. Keep your cool, and don’t act like you think they have no right to ask you what they are asking.

Once you make it to your destination, What do you do?

Once you land, you are technically in the clear, so just be safe if you smoke weed in a foreign country and research the laws of the destination you are traveling to.

Don’t become the next Brittney Griner.

What to Do If You Get Caught with Weed at the Airport

If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being caught with weed at the airport, it’s essential to know what to do to minimize the potential consequences.

While every situation is different, here are some general steps you can take if you face this predicament.

First and foremost, staying calm and cooperating with the authorities is essential. Getting angry or argumentative will only make the situation worse.

Remember that the TSA agents and law enforcement officials are just doing their jobs; getting confrontational will not help your case.

Local law enforcement will likely be notified once you have been caught with weed.

At this point, it’s essential to be honest and provide any necessary information they may ask for, like your medical marijuana card. Lying or providing false information can lead to more severe charges and legal complications.

You may be given a citation or even face criminal charges depending on your circumstances and state.

It’s essential to understand the laws of the state you are in and the potential penalties associated with cannabis possession.

If you are unsure about your rights or the legal implications of your situation, it’s always a good idea to consult with a lawyer who specializes in cannabis laws.

It’s also important to note that the consequences of getting caught with weed at the airport can extend beyond legal ramifications.

Depending on your destination, you may be denied entry or face additional questioning by immigration officials. This can have long-lasting effects on your ability to travel internationally.

Consequences of Flying with Weed

Getting caught with weed at the airport can have serious consequences, both legally and in terms of your ability to travel.

While the specific outcomes may vary depending on the circumstances and the state you are in, it’s important to understand the potential ramifications and take the necessary steps to minimize any adverse effects.

One of the immediate consequences of getting caught with weed at the airport is that local police will likely be notified.

This can lead to various outcomes, from receiving a citation to facing criminal charges.

The severity of the charges will depend on factors such as the quantity of cannabis in your possession and the local laws of the state you are in.

In addition to potential legal repercussions, getting caught with weed at the airport can also have an impact on your ability to travel internationally.

Depending on your destination, you may be denied entry or subjected to additional questioning by immigration officials.

This can create long-lasting difficulties and limitations when it comes to traveling outside of your home country.

It’s important to note that the consequences of getting caught with a vape pen on a plane can be similar to those of getting caught with weed.

Even if you are not carrying actual marijuana, if the vape pen contains THC, it is still considered a controlled substance.

This means that you may still face legal and travel consequences if you are caught with a vape pen that contains THC.

the Harshest Cannabis Laws Around the World

Suppose you’re caught possessing, using, selling, distributing, or smuggling cannabis into these countries practicing strict prohibition.

In that case, you’re likely to be met with the full force of the law, resulting in very harsh fines, lengthy prison stints, or death.

So make sure you put your edibles or weed in the hotel safe, or you can purchase a diversion can before leaving, and no one will think to look inside a can of coke, deodorant, or even a bible.

Conclusion of How To Fly With Weed

Flying with weed can be a risky endeavor, even with the increasing legalization of cannabis in many states.

While it may be tempting to try and bring your favorite strain or edibles on your next flight, it’s crucial to weigh the potential consequences.

Getting caught with weed at the airport can lead to legal issues, ranging from citations to criminal charges.

That being said, if you do choose to fly with weed, it’s crucial to understand the TSA rules and regulations and the specific policies of the airports you’ll be traveling through.

Being informed can help minimize the risk of getting caught and potentially reduce adverse outcomes.

It’s also important to be discreet and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Keep your cannabis securely packed in your carry-on bag, follow airline regulations for vape pens, and avoid discussing your products openly.

In the end, it’s a personal decision whether to fly with weed, but it’s essential to consider the potential risks and consequences.

Staying informed, being discreet, and prioritizing your safety are key factors to remember if you take the risk.

Been flying with stash for 3 decades. Your article seems to be that aged also. No med bottles, no cotton, no pills on top. You had me until you said condoms. LOLOL Now I know you’re just making stuff up. Just smelly-proof bags and throw it in your carry-on. X-RAY cannot tell one organic material from another, so weed in a smelly-proof bag looks no different than a tea bag or sugar packet.

100% agreed. Edibles go in my 7-day pill box, mixed in with the vitamins and OTC pain relievers. I avoid traveling with flower these days, but when I did (back before anything was legal anywhere), I’d pack a bunch of mint tea bags in a Ziploc bag and replace the tea leaves in some of the bags with flower. The mint aroma overpowered everything else. And who’s going to go to the trouble to look inside a tea bag anyway?

Great article! I found your insights on the topic of weed vape cartridges to be incredibly informative. As a cannabis enthusiast, I appreciate the emphasis on quality and safety. Going Out of Town? Use These Tips to Fly With Your Pipe

In the United States, airports require screenings conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a government agency that abides by federal regulations to conduct security checks. Lately, several airports around the country have adjusted their policies when flying with cannabis, but the TSA’s official policy still remains:

Possession of marijuana and cannabis infused products, such as Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, is illegal under federal law.

But what should you expect if you’re flying with a pipe or vape?

Need to relax before a flight? Find calming strains on menus near you.

I interviewed pipe and vape expert, Chad Hall, owner and founder of Maine’s After Hours Smoke Shop , to gather tips on how cannabis users can fly with ease on local, national, or international flights.

Tip: Clean Your Gear

Cannabis is still illegal on the federal level. As a result, your favorite pipe or vape is considered illegal drug paraphernalia if it contains traces of cannabis. But while TSA restricts the transportation of ‘drug’ paraphernalia in accordance with federal law, the agency officially allows tobacco pipes in carry-on and check-in bags.

One way to reduce the chance of any hiccups is to clean your vape or pipe thoroughly.

Due to the federal legislation around drug paraphernalia, carrying your cannabis pipe or vape through airport security can be risky, even if you’re departing from a state that has legalized cannabis possession. However, the individual TSA official who inspects your things still has the discretionary power to decide whether or not you get a green light on your gear.

One way to reduce the chance of any hiccups is to clean your vape or pipe thoroughly. Hal’s tips include emptying the oil from your cannabis oil distillate cartridge prior to traveling. He recommends cannabis-using travelers carry pipes through security checkpoints only after the use of alcohol or a specialized pipe cleaner to scrub away cannabis resin.

Tip: Place Your Cannabis Tools in Plain View

Regardless of your choice to clean your piece or not, there still remains a chance that TSA will pull you aside for traveling with a suspicious item if they see a pipe or vape in your luggage.

To reduce the chances that you’re viewed as a suspect to the crime of possessing illegal paraphernalia, store your clean piece in plain sight—doing otherwise can be regarded as “ artful concealment. ”

Artful concealment, in simple terms, means concealing a ‘suspicious’ object in a creative way. An example of this is hallowing out a book to conceal a gun inside. If you pull this move with your pipe, you can be accused of artful concealment and face immense penalties including expensive fines, jail time, and immigration consequences.

Tip: Keep it Discreet and Convenient

The minimum expectation most cannabis users may have when flying is staying safe, but what about keeping your cool amidst it all?

Hall asserts that, in order to fly with ease, it’s advantageous to travel with small, non-odorous, and non-breakable pieces—that way, you don’t have to worry about broken glass or strong odors in your luggage when you’re moving through airports.

For flower, Hall proposes the use of a chillum, or a one-hitter, because it’s small and therefore convenient. Another great option for durability is a silicone hand pipe.

“It’s becoming super popular to have those silicone pipes because you can squish ‘em and roll ‘em up. They’re really easy to carry and to take care of and they’re not going to break.”

… clean your gear, don’t hide it from authorities, and make it convenient.

As for vapes, Hall suggests that the safest way to go “would 100 percent be the distillate vapes or vapes in general for wax.” With distillates, he claims, “you’re not going to smell it at all, even if you blow it out in a vape form … a lot of people would think it’s an e-cigarette. That’s our biggest seller for people who are in jobs where [their cannabis use] is not something they want everyone knowing about.”

If you’re traveling by air, consider these suggestions for having a stress-free and enjoyable commute: clean your gear, don’t hide it from authorities, and make it convenient. Searching for elevation?

Can You Bring a Vape Pen on a Plane to Mexico?

Can I fly to Mexico with a vape pen? The short answer is… you can bring it on a plane at your own risk, but it’s not technically legal.

Here is the complete guidance for bringing a Vape Pen to Mexico.

Are Vape Pens legal in Mexico?

This is the official guidance from Mexico customs:

It’s illegal to bring electronic cigarettes/vaping devices and solutions into Mexico. You could have these items confiscated by customs officials if you have them in your possession. You could also be fined or detained.

Although this is the official line, the actual law is a little bit of a gray area .

While the Mexican government banned them, their Supreme Court ruled that ban unconstitutional.

So Can You Bring a Vape Pen To Mexico?

It really depends on the customs agent you meet.

There are multiple accounts of custom agents saying that you can get fined $200 if the vape pen is confiscated… or $100 if you pay now, and get to keep the vape pen.

There are also reports of a $3000 fine if you get caught trying to smuggle a vape pen into the country.

Of course, this is probably one hassle you want to avoid at the airport.

The safest way is to leave your vape pen at home and buy them when you get there.

Can You Buy a Vape Pen and E-Juice in Mexico?

The good news is that you can easily buy Vape Pens and e-juice in Mexico , especially in the more popular tourist areas like Cancun.

This is because, even though they are technically illegal to import, vape pens are still very popular in Mexico.

You might even find that they are cheaper in Mexico than they are back home.

Recent Personal Account of Traveling to Mexico With a Vape Pen

This is a recent personal account of someone who traveled to Mexico with a vape pen.

This was posted to Quora on 22nd Jan 2023:

I just flew into Mexico from Orlando I landed at Cancun International Airport and had an electronic cigarette (vape) in my carry on bag. Everyone told me they were not allowed in the country, flight attendants said if found by customs I would face a 3,000$ fine and wouldn’t be able to enter the country until the fine was paid. I took it off the plane, got through customs (passport checking part) and was asked by one Cancun airport attendant if I had anything to declare. I said no and continued figuring I’d ditch the vape last minute in the case we went through security. To my surprise, I got my checked bag and left with my vape still on me. HAHA. This was as of 01/21/2023 so do this at your own risk but all went well for me. Must be something to assist in getting money from tourists because they’re selling them at my resort. THIS WAS ENTERING THE COUNTRY FROM THE STATES! I do not plan on going back home with the vape in my luggage. If you’re coming, I suggest some Zyn nicotine pouches or nicotine gum just to alleviate some anxiety because the problem seems to be about the electronic cigarettes specifically. Good luck to you all.

Bringing a Vape Pen in Your Carry-on Bag

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) says that you can bring a vape pen in your carry-on bag or your checked bag. However, there are some restrictions.

First, all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be placed in containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item and must be placed in a single, clear, quart-sized bag.

This includes e-liquids, which are the liquids used in vape pens.

E-liquids must be placed in bottles that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. These bottles must then be placed in the single, clear, quart-sized bag along with your other liquids, gels, and aerosols.

If your e-liquid is over 100ml, it will need to go in your checked luggage.

Try a special vape pen carrying case for your next journey

vape pens

You are also allowed to bring batteries for your vape pen on a plane, but there are restrictions on these as well.

Lithium-ion batteries are restricted to carry-on bags only if they adhere to the following:

  • Spare (uninstalled) lithium-ion batteries must be carried in the aircraft cabin and placed in carry-on baggage only.
  • Battery terminals must be protected from short-circuiting. This can be accomplished by placing each battery in its original retail packaging or by insulating the exposed terminals by taping over them or placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch…
  • Carrying loose batteries in your pocket could result in the inadvertent activation of battery-powered devices such as e-cigarettes and cigars…and damage to the aircraft cabin interior if a fire were to occur.”
  • If damaged spare lithium-ion batteries are carried on board they might be refused carriage by the airline.

So if your battery is damaged in any way, it’s best to leave it at home.

checked luggage

Packing Your Vape Pen in Your Checked Luggage

If you’re going to bring your vape pen in your checked luggage, there are a few things you need to do to make sure that it arrives at your destination safely.

First, make sure that the battery is disconnected. Most vape pens have a removable battery, so this should be easy enough to do.

Next, wrap the atomizer (the part of the pen that heats up the liquid) in a cloth or piece of clothing to protect it from getting damaged during transit.

Finally, put everything back in the carrying case or box that it came in and pack it securely in your suitcase.

Real Guidance From a TSA Employee

A former TSA employee gave this advice to people wanting to bring their vape pens on the plane with them.

To be extra careful:

  • Put the Vape battery in your carry-on bag. Batteries aren’t allowed in checked bags.
  • Put the oil in your checked bag. The TSA considers oil to be a liquid—which can’t be carried on.
  • Don’t bring a used cartridge. It may get leaky.

My name is Jordan Simons and over the past few years I've learned how to travel the world continuously. Now I want to show you how to do the same.

Can I bring my vape pen to Mexico and should I put it in my suitcase.

I also have this question, travelling from Canada to Puerto Vallarta, can someone please advise us in this matter

Did you end up flying to Puerto Vallarta with your vape? I’m leaving tomorrow and I don’t know whether I should bring mine or not!

Hi, I read different stories from people giving advice about this subject. So you can’t be checked at the border and pay a fine?

But aren’t they now illegal in Mexico? Will they be confiscated at the airport?

I just flew in from Canada and I just got all my gear confiscated. As you’ll in many forums, it really depends on the agent you encounter. I’ve been flying back-and-forth with them in my checked luggage for years and never had a problem until this last time. It’s a scam. They tried to fine me. When I told him I simply didn’t have any money. They just took my pen and let me go. my advice? Buy your gear down here and leave it down here. You don’t want any trouble at the airport in Mexico. Believe me.

Preface – I use Elf Bars and not a full vape setup so not sure if there is a difference but I’m currently in Mexico for 3 months. I brought 6 Elf Bars with me and have taken several domestic flights while here and have never had an issue or even heard of anyone having an issue. I did, however, get taxed on bringing in two computers (one work & one personal) for 19% of the value (they ran the serial numbers on both of my Macs and got the value of what they are in Mexico not in the US which is much higher).

Also, I haven’t put my liquids in a plastic bag for going on 12 years now and have never once had an issue. Hell, I’ve even stopped taking my toiletry bag out of my backpack altogether for the past couple of years. I take around 20-30 flights a year and about 50% are international so I think people are just way too anxious about flying in general.

Obviously, this is regarding nicotine and body wash. Never ever ever attempt to bring drugs into a foreign country or on a plane. It’s silly I have to write that but kids were eating Tide pods awhile back so better to be extra thorough.

I am in CDMX, There is a lot of different places to buy vapes in the city good flavors. The main vape in the CDMX and Puebla area is called MASKKING. They come boxed and sealed. I have not seen any pods like elfbars and so on. This posting is July 3rd 2023. I paid 150 pesos per vape.

We came back last week, Keep vapes on your person, they search hand luggage and bags but generally not the person, this is what TUI told us and went through with ours no problem, coach drivers outside the airport didn’t care if anyone was smoking /vaping nor around the hotel, best advice is if you do vape/smoke then be a bit discreet about it

Hubby and I passed this store one afternoon. We saw that it was open so we did a u turn and came through. It was like I stepped into wonderland. From the outside, the building looks like a shack. It doesn't have much curb appeal. You walk in and it's hanging lights from the ceiling. The lights are low, you'll see a counter car with several stools. There are chairs and tables to allow for conversation and comfort. They have a good selection of vapes, edibles, and flower. They also make different smoothies and drinks. The young man there was telling us they just finished having a yoga class. He was super friendly and knowledge. Great shop in the area. They've only been opened 2 weeks.

Decoding the TSA Rules for Camping Stoves

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), camping stoves can be transported in your checked baggage, but they are not permitted in your carry-on bags. Lisa Farbstein, a TSA spokesperson, explains, "Camping stoves are allowed in checked baggage, but not in carry-on bags. They must be empty of all fuel and cleaned of all residue."

This means you'll need to thoroughly clean your stove before packing it to ensure there's no lingering fuel or residue. This rule is in place to prevent any accidental ignition of leftover fuel during the flight.

Fuel Canisters: A Trickier Issue

While you can bring your camping stove on a plane, the rules for fuel canisters are a bit more complicated. Propane and butane fuel canisters, which are commonly used with camping stoves, are not allowed in either checked or carry-on bags due to their flammability. However, if your fuel canister is completely empty and has no residual fuel, it can be placed in your checked baggage.

Expert Tips for Traveling with a Camping Stove

Joe Kuhns, a camping expert and author of "The Ultimate Camping Guide", advises travelers to do their homework before heading to the airport with a camping stove. "If you're planning on taking a camping stove on a plane, it's important to research the airline's specific policies and guidelines beforehand. Some airlines may have additional restrictions or requirements for transporting camping stoves, so it's always best to double-check before you travel."

Furthermore, Kuhns suggests considering the availability of fuel at your destination. If you can purchase fuel for your camping stove after you land, you can avoid the issue of transporting fuel canisters altogether.

So, Can I Take a Camping Stove on a Plane?

Yes, you can, but with certain conditions. Your camping stove must be clean and free of any fuel or residue, and it must be packed in your checked baggage. Fuel canisters, on the other hand, are a bit trickier. Empty fuel canisters can go in your checked bags, but full ones are a no-go. Remember, it's always best to double-check the specific rules of your airline before heading to the airport.

Traveling with a camping stove may seem complicated, but with a bit of preparation and understanding of the rules, you can smoothly navigate this process. Whether you're a seasoned camper or a novice embarking on your first outdoor adventure, knowing these regulations will help ensure a hassle-free journey . So go ahead, pack your camping stove, and gear up for the trip of a lifetime!

Can I pack a propane or butane fuel canister in my checked baggage?

No, propane and butane fuel canisters are not allowed in checked or carry-on bags due to their flammability.

Can I bring an empty fuel canister in my checked baggage?

Yes, if the fuel canister is completely empty and free of residual fuel, it can be packed in your checked baggage.

Are camping stoves allowed in carry-on bags?

No, camping stoves are not permitted in carry-on bags according to the TSA. They can, however, be packed in your checked baggage.

Do all airlines allow camping stoves in checked baggage?

While the TSA permits camping stoves in checked baggage, it's always best to check with your specific airline as they may have additional restrictions or requirements.

What should I do if I can't bring my camping stove's fuel on the plane?

You can consider purchasing fuel at your destination. This way, you can avoid the issue of transporting fuel canisters altogether.

What is the best way to clean my camping stove before traveling?

Clean your camping stove thoroughly to remove all fuel and residue. You can use warm soapy water and a scrub brush to clean most camping stoves. Make sure the stove is completely dry before packing it.

Can I bring a portable camping stove on a plane?

Yes, as long as it's thoroughly cleaned of all fuel and residue and packed in your checked luggage.

A portrait of Griner hold out her hands.

5 Takeaways From the Times Interview of Brittney Griner

Highlights from a Times Magazine profile of the basketball star.

By J Wortham

J Wortham is a staff writer for the magazine. They interviewed the basketball star over a weekend in Phoenix, Ariz.

  • May 2, 2024

Less than two years ago, the W.N.B.A. star Brittney Griner was starting her nine-year sentence in a penal colony in Russia, sewing uniforms for the Russian military and subsisting on spoiled food. She lived for glimpses of the sky. She had never been farther from the sport that made her a household name. A smoking habit she’d picked up in prison had diminished her lung capacity. She rarely got to hear from her wife, Cherelle, or her family and friends, and she had no idea when — or if — she would be coming home.

Griner was arrested at the Moscow Airport in February 2022, when officials found two vape cartridges in her backpack with 0.7 grams of cannabis oil. (To treat Griner’s chronic pain, a physician in Arizona had prescribed medical marijuana, but it was against the law in Russia.) She was charged with illegal drug possession and smuggling “a significant amount” of narcotics into the country and was sent to prison.

That December, after 10 months of detainment in Russia, she was finally released. She jumped back into playing, thinking the routine and familiarity would ground her. But the transition was rocky, and she is only now back in shape. On May 7, she’ll publish a memoir, “Coming Home,” detailing her ordeal.

Here are the highlights from my profile of the basketball star after I met her at a practice facility in Phoenix.

She Endured Dehumanizing Treatment

In the cell where she was first held, a feces-stained hole in the ground served as the toilet. The prison guards brought her a milky porridge with a piece of oily fish that sickened her. She had no way to clean herself — no towels, soap, toothpaste, shampoo or deodorant. She ripped T-shirts into several pieces: for her teeth, for her body, for toilet paper.

“I’ve never been so dirty in my life,” she said. The degradation would push her to contemplate suicide.

Griner, an openly gay professional athlete, is nearly seven feet tall. Prison guards stared at her body and questioned her gender. The treatment triggered memories of bullying from her childhood. Anytime she was transported to a doctor or a court appointment, she was forced to sit in a cage too small for her height. Once a guard locked Griner’s wrists together and then chained the lock to the guard’s wrist. Griner felt like a dog on a leash. She was forced to undress and be photographed nude by doctors.

Griner started smoking, up to a pack a day. She transformed physically, losing muscle mass and gaining weight from commissary items, like packaged noodles, muffins, salami and condensed milk. She felt depressed, and even sit-ups in her cell felt beyond her capacity.

Cutting Off Her Locs Was a Rare Moment of Agency

After her initial detainment, Griner was moved to a women’s detention center about two hours outside Moscow.

When images of Griner were first broadcast around the world, her long locs were shorn, and it seemed like an indication of the cruelty she was enduring. But Griner told me that cutting her hair was actually a rare moment of agency during her imprisonment. The prison was barely heated, and her locs never fully dried. She worried that she would catch pneumonia, so she decided to cut them off. ‘‘The cut was horrible but not as bad as it could have been,’’ she told me with a laugh.

Griner Personally Appealed to Biden

Griner wrote a letter to President Biden that was sent on July 4, begging him not to forget about her. “Please do all you can to bring us home,” she said. “I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore.” Dennis Rodman (publicly) and Donald Trump (privately) said they would fly to Russia to get her. (Neither did.)

Griner’s most devoted and persistent advocates were Black women, many of whom argued online that their government’s response felt muted. Thousands sent Griner messages in prison.

A Guard Slipped Her a Note Saying She Was Going Home

In late November, about a month after she’d been moved to a penal colony 200 miles outside of Moscow, Griner got a call from the U.S. Embassy. They said that discussions for a prisoner swap were underway. She was excited but cautious. On Dec. 2, she was loaded into a cage and transported to a men’s prison, where she feared she would have to serve the rest of her sentence.

That night, a guard slipped her a note telling her she was going home. The next morning, she boarded a plane, with no idea where it was going. The plane landed in Abu Dhabi. Greeting her was Roger Carstens, the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs in the State Department. In that moment, Griner knew she really was going home.

She Suffered From PTSD After Her Return

In prison, Griner had a singular focus: freedom. At home, she felt adrift. She was determined to return to basketball, undergoing a rigorous 100-day training regimen and re-joining her W.N.B.A. team, the Phoenix Mercury. But her 2023 season was uneven, and she experienced symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Therapy has taught her that there is no “before” anymore.

As she prepares for the upcoming season, she likes to go deep into the mountains near her home in Phoenix. “That’s a big thing for me — getting away from the screens and the cameras.”

Brittney Griner's book is raw recounting of fear, hopelessness while locked away in Russia

can u travel with vape

Midway through her book "Coming Home," Brittney Griner is informed of fellow American Trevor Reed’s release from a Russian penal colony. It is April 2022, and Reed is finally going home after being wrongfully detained for nearly three years. The news both elevates Griner’s spirit and breaks her heart, bringing her to tears.

"Only someone who has lived, prayed, cried and slept in a Russian prison can truly comprehend the daily indignities, the deep isolation that weighs on your spirit," Griner writes.

The memoir, which is available Tuesday, is a detailed accounting of Griner’s harrowing journey through a Russian legal system known for its corruption. Griner describes it as "a rigged system where the house always won." In February 2022, just a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, Griner was detained at the Moscow airport on her way back to UMMC Ekaterinburg, the Russian team she’d played with for nearly a decade during the WNBA offseason.

In her carry-on, Griner had forgotten to remove two small vape pens with cannabis oil , a minor infraction in the U.S. but a major violation in Russia, a country known for draconian drug laws. Back home in Phoenix, a doctor had prescribed Griner medical marijuana for a litany of lingering sports injuries. Griner owns the mistake of leaving the cannabis oil in her bag, writing "I didn’t deserve the hell I was put through, and yet my forgetfulness on that February morning had cost us dearly."

If you followed Griner’s plight in real time, you’ll be familiar with all the major plot points. The details she shares are both jarring (she was forced to strip in prisons more than once, as Russian guards photographed her body) and bizarre (during her trial, as the court broke for judge deliberation, the prosecutor asked the American superstar for some photos). She passed time, and kept her sanity, by playing Sudoku and scribbling notes in the margins, a makeshift diary. She talks frankly about how often she’s felt other’d in her life − "when you’re born in a body like mine, a part of you dies every day, with every mean comment and lingering stare," she writes − and how her time in Russia was merely the latest, and cruelest, version of that reality.

It is a raw recounting of a hellish 10 months that ended with her release Dec. 8, 2022. Griner’s shame, fear, hopelessness and heartache are evident.

And that’s why everyone should read it.

As Griner’s story played out in the national media, many people − loudly and publicly − picked sides. Some fought for Griner’s release, posting daily to social media about how President Joe Biden’s administration needed to do whatever necessary to bring her home. Others railed against the idea of an openly gay, Black woman’s freedom being prioritized, especially if it came at the expense of trading a notorious Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout , who was serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. Some were furious that a basketball player was released while military and longer-term political prisoners, including Paul Whelan, were left behind. Wasn’t this just one more example of a sports star receiving special treatment?

Polarization might make headlines but the truth is, the majority of Americans probably are somewhere in the middle.

It’s likely that there are thousands of Americans across the country who are happy Griner is home , but aren’t quite sure how they feel about the finer points of the situation − about if the trade was "fair," about if she needed to go to Russia in the first place, about if she deserved her punishment for possessing the cannabis oil.

But read her book, a 300-plus page deep dive on an experience many of us wouldn’t have been able to recover from, and I suspect your empathy will grow − for her and all of humanity.

Maybe you won’t be lining up to get season tickets to the Phoenix Mercury or purchasing a purple Griner jersey, but I bet you'll see the world differently. Especially if you followed the story only tangentially and know bits and pieces but not all the horrifying details. I’m thinking it will make you say out loud, "I’ve never thought of it that way."

Maybe your thoughts on Griner will remain complicated. But maybe your thoughts on other issues related to her − pay equity, the reality of being Black and gay in both Russia and America, protesting the national anthem in the name of social justice − will broaden. Maybe you won’t subscribe to WNBA league pass, but you’ll decide to support your local high school team. Maybe you’ll speak up at the Thanksgiving table when someone says something crass about the LGBTQ community. Maybe the next time you see a tall, awkward kid who is obviously struggling to fit in, you’ll offer them a kind smile and encouraging word.

It’s rare that change happens overnight, for a major event to immediately turn the public consciousness. But the ripple effect in life is real, and if Griner’s honesty helps even a dozen readers see the world differently, that impact, her impact, will be felt for years.

Griner's book will get people talking to each other, and that's when real change begins.
