A Guide to Lough Hyne: Walks, Night Kayaking + Things to Do Nearby

The ramble at Knockomagh Woods by Lough Hyne is one of my favourite walks in Cork .

Now, if you’re not familiar with it, Lough Hyne is one of the most beautiful places to visit in West Cork !

Just 5km from the town of Skibbereen , this serene seawater lake became Ireland’s first and only Marine Nature Reserve in 1981.

Visitors to the area can head off on the Lough Hyne walk (it takes you up into Knockomagh Woods) or try the very unique Lough Hyne night kayaking (more on this below)

Some quick need-to-knows about Lough Hyne

Although a visit to Lough Hyne in Cork is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

You’ll find Lough Hyne in West Cork, a stone’s throw from Skibbereen (roughly 5km away) and 10 minutes from Baltimore (one of the most popular places to try whale watching in Cork ).

Lough Hyne is just 1km long and ¾km wide, but what makes it different from other lakes is the tidal exchange of waters through a narrow channel known as “The Rapids”.

Twice a day, Atlantic saltwater flows in via the Barloge Creek, rushing over The Rapids at 16km/hour, so don’t get caught in the rush! It creates a lake of unusually warm oxygenated seawater which support marine plants along with 72 different species of fish.

If you pop ‘Lough Hyne car park’ into Google Maps you’ll find a couple of pokey places to park up. There’s limited parking here, so it can be tricky to grab a space on a warm summers day.

4. Bioluminescence and night kayaking

Lough Hyne is famous for its after-dark kayaking experience which is made all the more interesting by the luminous phosphorescence in the lake. The water of Lough Hyne comes alive with bioluminescence, so you’ll have stars below you and, on a clear night, stars above.

The Lough Hyne walks

There are a couple of different Lough Hyne walks that you can head off on but the best, in my opinion, is the one that takes you up into Knockomagh Woods.

In fact, I’d go as far to say that it’s up there with the best things to do in Cork . It’s slightly  off-the-beaten-path, which means it’s rarely too crowded.

1. How long the walk takes

If you can, you should allow around 45 minutes to reach the top (this allows time for stopping at the viewpoints (literally holes in the trees) and then 15 – 30 minutes at the top for soaking up the views. The walk back down shouldn’t take more than 25 – 30 minutes, depending on pace.

2. Difficulty

This Lough Hyne walk is strenuous enough, as it’s a steep climb to the top, however, it should be doable for people with moderate fitness levels. The one thing to note is that the ground is very uneven, so caution is needed.

3. Where to start the walk

This Lough Hyne walk kicks off right from the parking area. When you hop out of your car, you need to walk up the road to this point . You’ll know you’ve reached it when you see the stone steps.

4. The climb to the top

The climb to the summit is an enjoyable one, as you make your way through lush, sheltered woodland en route to the top. When you reach the summit, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of Lough Hyne and the surrounding countryside.

The Lough Hyne night kayaking experience

Atlantic Sea Kayaking offers a Lough Hyne night kayaking experience with a difference. The trips take place in the moonlight/starlight on this bio-luminescent saltwater lake.

There’s something truly special about being out on the water at dusk, watching seabirds returning to their roost. If you’re lucky, you may get a flaming sunset or see the rising moon with a canopy of stars appearing one by one.

The adults-only trip take 2.5 hours and departs an hour before darkness. Suitable for beginners, you’ll be in double kayaks with safety equipment included in the price.

Things to do near Lough Hyne

One of the beauties of doing the Lough Hyne walk mentioned is that it’s a short spin away from a clatter of other attractions, both man-made and natural.

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from Lough Hyne (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Sherkin Island

Beach on Sherkin Island

Ten minutes by boat from the mainland in Roaringwater Bay, Sherkin Island (Inisherkin) boasts a sheltered pier, beaches, nature-filled walks and an operational Marine Station. The ruins of Dunalong Castle near the pier was once home to the O’Driscoll clan. Sights include a box-shaped megalithic tomb, remains of two forts and a 15th century Franciscan Friary.

2. Whale-watching

Spot minke whales, dolphins, basking sharks, harbour porpoises, turtles, sunfish and seabirds on an unforgettable whale-watching trip out of Baltimore, West Cork’s centre for such trips. Discover everything you need to know in our Cork whale watching guide.

3. Cape Clear Island

Just off the southwest coast of Cork, Cape Clear Island is Ireland’s southernmost inhabited area. This official Gaeltacht island is divided east-west by a narrow isthmus aptly named The Waist. It’s popular for sailing, hiking, bird-watching and fishing with trips to the iconic Fastnet Lighthouse .

4. Mizen Head

Start at the Visitor Centre on Mizen Head and learn about the Rescue Tide Clock. Tour Mizen Head Signal Station with its Marconi radio room, built to save ships from  the treacherous rocks. Cross the arched bridge, go seal-spotting, watch gannets diving into the deep waters and keep an eye open for whale spouts just offshore.

5. Barleycove Beach

One of the world’s finest beaches, Barleycove Beach is a stretch of golden sand between two headlands on the Mizen Peninsula. It has a “floating bridge” to preserve the extensive dunes from foot erosion.

There’s parking, a solitary hotel and a beach bar restaurant. This is one of the best beaches in Cork (and arguably the best of the many West Cork beaches ) for good reason.

Night Time Kayaking with Bioluminescence!

When people ask us what we loved about Ireland, this is one of several things that I mention loving the most. I forget exactly how I stumbled upon this place but I think it was on someone's blog. I started to see it pop up here and there on other blogs as well and suddenly, I knew we had to do it. I think it was around €100 for the two of us, which was ridiculously cheap in my opinion. We made it our last stop of the day after doing the Rock of Cashel and the Blarney Castle/Stone on a Monday in May 2018. There were about 9 of us total for our 9pm meet, though my husband and I didn't know anyone else. I think there were 3 guides that came with us, making it an even 12. They got us all dressed up and explained how to use the oars. We had been kayaking a number of times but it was a nice reminder as to how to do it properly. We learned so much amazing information about the lake and why it's so unique. After we got home, I tried researching it more and it was hard to find anything. I would love to know more about the lake because it was so cool! They led us out onto the lake. The sunset was at 9:20 so the sky was light for a bit as we made our way across, allowing us time to get comfortable before the night set in. We had made our way across most of the lake when they had us link us to chat about the lake. Finally, they said to wiggle our fingers in the lake. Suddenly, greenish-blue light sparked and I realized we were going to have a lucky night full of the Bioluminescence, as that's not always the case! They told us to stay near the shore, where it was darkest from the overhanging trees and I felt like we were in a Disney movie, with the kayak slicing through blue glittering water (not an exaggeration). Every once in a while, you'd see a big flash of blue, which was apparently from some sort of shrimp that is also bioluminescent. My only bit of feedback is to maybe be more conscious of photography. We left the kayaking trip with zero pictures. After kayaking, we stopped by the edge of the water and tried to capture some Bioluminescence in a video but got nothing but darkness and the sound of me swishing the water. The only reason I kept the video is to remind us that we did this because in years to come, we might forget. I emailed the company a couple weeks later, to ask if they had any pictures they had taken in general of the bioluminescent that I could have but they never responded to my email. Maybe offering to take pictures, especially since they recommended we leave our phones behind in our cars, would be nice. Otherwise, this trip was amazing and having the memories is still better than nothing!

Hi Red Head , Must be an Irish Gene here somewhere, Really delighted you enjoyed the trip . Sorry about the photography. We have no problem with people taking pictures in the day light on the earlier part of the trip . But when it gets dark usually people have to use flash and this takes away night vision and annoys most clients. Also we do not allow video on our night trip as it also upsets others and usually only records conversations. We really want people to get into the atmosphere of the trip and enjoy the moment. Also when people used to take out cameras in our early days. Most of them got wet or were dropped. We will take what you said on board and see if there a way to solve this ? Thank you for taking the time and your thoughts Jim Kennedy

My wife and I spent ten days on a road trip vacation in Ireland in September, flying from the U.S. to Shannon, and traveling from Dingle to Cork/ Cobh. While planning the trip, I searched for attractions in the Cork/ West Cork area on TripAdvisor, and Atlantic Sea Kayaking popped up. After reading about the night kayaking experience on Lough Hyne in Skibbereen, we decided to stay one night near there and arrange a night of kayaking. The staff at Atlantic Sea Kayaking were very helpful with the booking and payment, and they let us know the arrangements every step of the way, even when the location changed from Reen Pier to Lough Hyne the day of the kayaking due to weather conditions. We met Emily and Andy at Lough Hyne along with about 15 others on a damp night. We were given rain gear and cockpit covers, and were assured that their goal was to keep us dry. Sure enough, we had a comfortable time without getting wet. We have kayaked before (although not at night), but experience isn't necessary. The tour around the Lough was interesting with stories of the lore and the marine life. The Bio luminescent algae was incredible and even more so as the night wore on. The area is very dark at night and we experienced a sense of peace and solitude as we stopped during the tour. This experience is a must-do if you're near Skibbereen. Thanks to Atlantic Sea Kayaking for making our time a special one!

Thank you Rich for taking the time to comment and let TA and its followers know about us , Hope the rest of your adventure went well . It is really rewarding for our staff to hear the feed back good and bad. Hope too see you again sometime I am sure we will meet people who have read this review. Again appreciate the comments Jim

A great weekend with Jim and his team learning the basics of kayaking in beautiful Union Hall - We are delighted with all we learned on this course and will certainly sign up for the next level course with Atlantic Sea Kayaking.

Great you enjoyed the experience and thank you for letting us know . Hope to see you again . Jim Kennedy

We did the daytime kayaking in Reen Pier as well as night kayaking on Lough Hyne and I must say we were amazed! Reen Pier is a beautiful location and you get some amazing views during the trip. Night kayaking at Lough Hyne is even more incredible - the glowing plankton and the darkness is something you'll never forget. We had amazing guides both times with great stories and a friendly attitude. It's also suitable for beginners and every fitness level. I would definitely come and do it again!

Thank you indeed for the kind words . We do try and make it a great experience. Glad you enjoyed the glowing guides and the amazing plankton. Welcome any time . Thanks again from all of us Jim Kennedy

After reading all of the reviews for the night kayaking, my husband and I rearranged our travel plans so that we could do this while we were in Ireland. We are so glad we did. We have kayaked before, but to kayak in this setting and to see the bioluminescence was really special and unique. The trip started off as the sun was going down and ended in the pitch dark. The guides were great. The bioluminescence was Avatar-like. An all around fun experience.

It means so much to us that we get feed back . Our guides pride themselves on our visitors having the best possible experience in safety and fun . I will pass this on to them . Thank you again Jim Kennedy

The night kayak trip was very informative and funny entertaining besides the bioluminescence that was spectacular. Only salt water lake in Europe and the staff made sure everyone was safe and kept dry. Felt they were top notch. Would recommend

Delighted it was a good experience for you. Thank you very much for recommendation . Hope the rest of you trip was great . Jim Kennedy

A Cork Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point

Lough Hyne or Loughine is a saltwater lake between the town of Skibbereen and the village of Baltimore in County Cork and was designated Europe’s first Marine Nature Reserve in 1981. It was originally a fresh water lake over 4,000 years ago but as the seas rose they spilled over a lip into the lake, making it a marine lake.

The lough is 50 metres deep and about 60 hectares in area. This marine lake is connected to the sea by rapids. It fills up twice a day with the rising tide, then drains rapidly down a narrow gorge. The Irish (Gaelic) name for the lake is Lough Oighean, meaning ‘cauldron’, very apt.

Night Kayaking & Bioluminescence

Lough Hyne County Cork

It is a very popular location for swimming, diving and kayaking, particularly night kayaking to witness the bioluminescence for which this sea-lake is famous.

Microscopic organisms called phytoplankton store up light energy in the day then release it when disturbed by night. This light, called bioluminescence needs total darkness. When the kayak paddles break the inky black surface of the lake, the light show begins, like fairy dust, quite a magical spectacle and one which must be seen by the naked eye as it would be quite difficult to photograph or record without specialised equipment. An opportunity for a unique digital detox experience!

Bioluminescence can be seen all along the West coast but the stillness of Lough Hyne is what makes it particularly spectacular here.

Walking at Lough Hyne

From Lough Hyne you may take a 2 kilometre walk up Knockomagh Hill, also part of the Lough Hyne Nature Reserve and a designated Special Area of Conservation. The walk takes approximately 1 hour up the 197m high hill but the reward of panoramic views from the summit is worth it.

You can download the illustrated Knockomagh Hill Nature Trail leaflet provided by Skibbereen Heritage Centre from here .

With the full moon lighting up the night sky, spotting bioluminescence becomes a challenge. These mesmerizing organisms thrive in darkness, so the brilliance of the full moon can overshadow their gentle glow. But fret not! On such occasions, our kayak adventure takes on a different allure as we navigate beneath a stunning starry backdrop and the radiant beam of the moon. If the idea of paddling amidst this celestial spectacle intrigues you, aim for a date when the moon is at its peak. Occasionally, Mother Nature grants us a special treat—a chance to witness both bioluminescence and the majestic rise of the full moon. We carefully time these outings to ensure you enjoy the best of both worlds. Also note that on brighter nights when the moon is shining strongly, you can still witness bioluminescence. This happens because the clouds and the moon’s position in the sky play a role in making it possible for us to see this enchanting phenomenon.

While our Full Moon & Bioluminescence kayak tours promise excitement, they may not be suitable for young children or beginners. These nighttime excursions require paddling in complete darkness, making it crucial for all participants to stay with the group and manage their weight and balance. To maintain the enjoyment of everyone on the tour, we kindly ask that those with crying children or those unable to adhere to group dynamics refrain from signing up. Additionally, individuals weighing over 275 lbs or those who may have difficulty managing weight and balance should avoid booking this tour. We encourage all potential participants to carefully assess their abilities and limitations before reserving a spot to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

The start time will change throughout the season, so if you make your reservation more than a month in advance, please check your email a day before your tour for your updated start time. *Please note: Our kayak tours are subject to weather-related changes, as with all outdoor activities. We recommend making reservations early on in your vacation to move your tour to another date if needed. This is a warm-weather tour that we typically schedule from mid-May through mid-September. Weather, wind, and water conditions are determining factors.

Bioluminescent Kayaking | When, Where & How To Do It?

Kayaking is a fun and exciting sport to practice while traveling. If you’re looking for a unique experience, you should try it at night during the bioluminescence season. But seeing this natural phenomenon in action while paddling might not be as easy as you might think.

Bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism through a chemical reaction within itself. In the ocean, it’s what makes the water glow when stirred at specific times of the year. Kayaking is the perfect activity to observe this spectacular event.

Bioluminescent Kayaking

With that said, there are some things you should know before heading out on the water to see the bioluminescence. This phenomenon doesn’t occur everywhere nor all year round, so you need to know where and when it can happen.

You should also wear the right gear to prevent accidents. After reading this article, you will have everything you need to go on a bioluminescence paddling tour. So here’s what you should know to experience such an adventure.

What Is A Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour?

Many different water sports centers offer kayaking excursions, in which you can see the bioluminescence. They often include a kayak (see-through), a paddle, a guide, and all the safety gear you need. It’s a fun activity to do either while traveling or during your free time near where you live.

Here’s a video to help you understand what a bioluminescent kayak tour looks likes!

Whatever you choose to book a tour with a company or plan a trip by yourself, there’s a lot of information you should know. Kayaking to see bioluminescence can be an incredible experience with proper preparation.

Where Can You See Bioluminescence While Kayaking?

Glowing water can occur anywhere there are living organisms that do bioluminescence. However, you will generally see this phenomenon in a few specific places. So you should find a spot where it’s possible to go kayaking at night and see bioluminescent waters.

Best Places For Bioluminescent Kayaking Tours In The US!

The United States has many great spots to see bioluminescence. California and Florida are the most popular states for this nocturnal activity. Here are some of the best specific places to kayak and observe bioluminescent organisms in action.

  • Orange County Near LA & San Diego, California, USA. (Newport & Laguna Beach)
  • Brevard County Near Orlando, Florida, USA. (River Lagoon, Cocoa Beach & Merritt Island)

There are other locations in the US where you can see bioluminescence while paddling. I’ve only mentioned a few of the most popular ones. Now it’s time to book your tour.

Best Places To Book A Bioluminescence Kayak Tour!

Once you have decided where you want to go, here are some popular options. BK Adventure offers bioluminescence kayaking and rafting tours in Florida near Orlando. Get Up And Go Kayaking is another company that offers similar excursions close by.

For bioluminescent kayaking tours in California, you can check out the Blue Waters Kayaking website . If you’re looking for the same experience somewhere else in another state of the US, here’s a solution. Type “bioluminescence kayaking + in State/City” on Google.

What If You’re Not In The US?

The United States isn’t the only country where you can enjoy bioluminescence kayaking. There are many other places around the world where you can see this phenomenon. Puerto Rico, Australia, and Mexico are some of them.

With some research, you should find tours for this type of nocturnal adventure near where you are. Otherwise, you can always plan a night kayaking trip by yourself. If there’s no bioluminescence in your location, the last option is to travel somewhere you can see it and book a tour there.

When Are The Best Times For You To Kayak & See Bioluminescence?

Depending on where you are and what type of bioluminescence you want to observe, it’s important to go during the season. For the time of day, it’s only visible at night . But even when it’s dark, you might not see it.

2 Types Of Bioluminescent Tours.

Let’s start by understanding what your options are. There are multiple types of bioluminescence. For kayaking tours, you often have to choose between two of them.

The time of year when you plan to go paddling can influence what type of bioluminescence you will see. The phenomenon is the same, but the living organisms that make it possible aren’t.

Bioluminescent Plankton.

The first type of glowing water takes form because of bioluminescent plankton. (Dinoflagellates) It’s the most popular type of tour because it covers the ocean surface and creates blue light when stirred. So you can play with the water and see this natural phenomenon.

Comb Jellies.

Jelly-like creatures that glow in the water cause also cause some bioluminescence. As they swim, it produces a blue light you can see in the dark. It’s another experience to look at those beautiful living organisms.

Bioluminescent Jellies

Late summer and early autumn, you’re more likely to encounter bioluminescent plankton. On the other hand, you have more chances to see comb jellies at the end of autumn or during the winter.

The best time to go kayaking and watch bioluminescence is within 4 days before and after the new moon. How visible the natural phenomenon will be affected by the moonlight. Let’s take a look at the new moons for the upcoming years!

2022: January 2, February 1, March 2, April 1, April 30, May 30, June 28, July 28, August 27, September 25, October 25, November 23 & December 23.

2023: January 21, February 20, March 21, April 20, May 19, June 18, July 17, August 16, September 14, October 14, November 13 & December 12.

2024: January 11, February 9, March 10, April 8, May 7, June 6, July 5, August 4, September 2, October 2, November 1, December 1 & December 30.

2025: January 29, February 27, March 29, April 27, May 26, June 25, July 24, August 23, September 21, October 20, November 20 & December 19.

Thus, kayaking around the dates above during the bioluminescence season of your choice will increase your chance to see it. You can’t predict when ocean living organisms will produce light, but there are times more favorable than others for this phenomenon to occur.

What Should You Wear To Bioluminescent Kayaking?

Once you have booked or planned your tour, it’s time to gear up for this adventure. The company with which you deal should prepare all the equipment necessary. It includes a kayak (often see-through), a paddle, a life jacket, and other accessories .

See-Through Kayak

However, you still need to find the right outfit for this nocturnal activity. What you decide to wear during a bioluminescence kayaking tour will influence how comfortable you will be on the water. So here are the recommended clothes for such an adventure.

Like any other paddling sport, the risk of getting wet or even capsizing is always there. That’s why you should ideally wear something waterproof. If you don’t have any, quick-dry clothing is an excellent alternative.

For accessing and launching the kayak, you might have to walk in the dark and put your feet in the ocean. So having water shoes or sandals on will prevent unnecessary injuries. Proper footwear can make your bioluminescence tour much more enjoyable.

Mosquitoes are inevitable if you’re paddling during a warm and humid night. Putting on some insect repellant can help, but you should also wear long pants and sleeves for additional protection. It’s also why bikinis and bathing suits are generally not the best outfits for this type of kayaking trip.

Don’t let your fun get ruined by a lack of preparation. Here’s a checklist to help you dress appropriately for your bioluminescence kayaking tour. The answer to your question about what you should wear during this activity is…

  • Footwear: Water Shoes/Sandals.
  • Material Type: Quick Dry/Waterproof Clothing.
  • Clothes: Long Pants & Sleeves.

You can also bring other accessories such as your camera, a dry bag, or insect repellant. Anything that can make your paddling adventure more fun and safe is worth considering.

Last Thoughts About Bioluminescent Kayaking!

Finally, every outdoor enthusiast should plan a trip to see the bioluminescence. A kayak tour can be a fun and unique way to experience this spectacular phenomenon. Paddling in glowing blue water is something only a few people will have the chance to do.

Ocean Kayaking In Dark

I hope my article has helped you understand how you can be among the lucky ones to see bioluminescence while kayaking. Now it’s time to book your excursion and prepare yourself to cross that item off your bucket list.

Bioluminescent Night Kayak Tour

Rathmullan,Rathmullan

You’ll find many marvels along the Wild Atlantic Way Donegal, from the Knockalla Ghost Ship, the Magnificent 7 Arches, Fanad Light House, the Pollad Great Arch, spectacular sea cliffs and Knockalla's golden beaches.

But the most mysterious of all, are the glowing waters to be found on summer nights along the Donegal Coast.

Bioluminescent plankton shine under the Darkness of Night, along Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way, turning the plankton a ghostly blue as the sea is disturbed with every passing paddle stroke.

Eco Atlantic Adventures can take you on a night-time kayak on Lough Swilly or Sheephave Bay and witness this phenomenon glittering beneath the still waters.

Kayaking out in the evening as your eyes get accustomed to the lowering level of the sun. Gazing at the ever-growing sea of stars above, in the hope to catch a shooting star or to see the glow of a shoal of phosphorescence plankton.

Returning after dark following the distant light along the beach, with the light of the fire to guide the way home. Finish of the Evening with a hot drink around the fire.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
