Hassle-Free

Handpicked adventures, trusted by many, unbeatable support, things to know.

Self-guided cycling tours offer a customizable and adaptable way to enjoy a cycling vacation, giving you the freedom to explore at your own speed and adjust your path or timetable as desired. Our dedicated team handles all the logistical arrangements, such as lodging, detailed schedules, GPS directions, and round-the-clock assistance, ensuring a hassle-free, engaging adventure that emphasizes autonomy, personalization, and genuine interactions with the local community.

Our tours are categorized into three difficulty levels: leisurely, moderate, and challenging. Although each may include both easier and more demanding days, our rating system reflects the average difficulty level for a typical day.

Leisurely tours take place primarily on flat, paved cycling paths, asphalt roads, or easy gravel tracks, and they are suitable for all fitness levels.

Moderate tours may include some uphill climbs or technically more demanding terrain, but they are manageable for individuals of average fitness.

Challenging tours entail either long distances and numerous climbs or technical terrain, possibly featuring downhill sections requiring proficiency with a mountain bike.

We are dedicated to finding the ideal lodging for you. We collaborate with various lodging establishments that meet our criteria, but their availability can fluctuate, particularly during peak seasons. We can also personalize your vacation based on your preferences and financial constraints, ensuring we locate the best possible option that suits your taste.

We advise that you make your reservation as soon as feasible. Numerous routes pass through heavily frequented tourist areas where lodging choices may be restricted. Often, the most desirable accommodations get reserved for the summer season before spring even arrives.

Especially our bike and boat tours get sold out really quickly, as the boats can only accommodate a certain amount of people.

The ability to accommodate dietary restrictions varies depending on their severity. In Croatia, vegetarian meals are generally available, but finding vegan options in rural areas or smaller towns may be difficult. Additionally, please be aware that lunch breaks frequently take place at conventional establishments that may have difficulty accommodating special requests outside their standard menu. We recommend that you take this into account during your journey. The boats usually offer vegan and vegetarian options.

The best season for cycling in Croatia is generally from April to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is mild, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the crowds are smaller than during the peak summer season. July and August can be hot and crowded, making cycling more challenging. However, if you are comfortable with higher temperatures and busy areas, you may still enjoy cycling during this time. Winter months can be quite cold and wet, making cycling less desirable. Therefore, the best time for cycling in Croatia is during the spring and fall seasons.

Most of our tours can take place even in light rain, as long as you dress suitably. During the summer months in Croatia, it’s typically hot and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. However, it’s not uncommon to experience occasional thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoons. Therefore, we recommend starting your day early to avoid the midday heat and potential storms. In the event of particularly severe or unfavorable weather conditions, we will do our best to adjust the tour beforehand to make it safe and enjoyable for you.

Our Croatia Bike Tours

The Istrian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and is shared by three countries, Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The central and southern region belongs to Croatia, which makes up 90% of the peninsula. Our itinerary provides you with the opportunity to incorporate Italy (Venice day tour and Trieste starting point) and Slovenia (part of an available ride) as a part of your Croatian adventure.

The Istrian Peninsula is two worlds. There is the traditional Istrian interior with its hilltop villages set among ancient farms, forests, and rolling hills. In contrast, the coast is craggy, scenic, and framed by the sparkling waters of the Adriatic. This is also where you find walled cities that date back to the Venetian Republic. Istria is the gastronomic heart of Croatia and attracts foodies from across the world for its fusion of Italian and Slavic cuisines. Culturally, the Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Venetians, and the Habsburgs have all left their marks here. Highlights include the beautiful coastal towns of Rovinj and Poreč and the hilltop villages of Motovun and Grožnjan.

All trips are customized for you; your dates, your ride distances and your style of lodging. During your bike tour, we take care of all the logistics and our support vans are always nearby so you simply enjoy the freedom of cycling at your own pace.

LifeCycle Adventures is an owner-operated company – we live and ride in the areas we operate. So, you know you will be looked after by real locals who will help you find the hidden gems wherever you are riding. Learn more about the LifeCycle Adventures difference.

Day 4: Poreč Loop Day

Day 5: Poreč to Rovinj

Day 6: Rovinj Loop Day

Day One - Pula or Trieste to Buje

The Intermediate route starts with a transfer to Tinjan. From here you ride through traditional Istrian countryside: past olive groves, small farms, and truffle stores. Initially the route rolls through the hills before descending steeply to the Jezero Butoniga reservoir and onto the Mirma River Valley. After a flat 11 miles in the valley there is a 3-mile climb up to the town of Buje.

The Leisure route starts with a transfer to the village of Trviž, five miles before the descent down to the Jezero Butoniga reservoir on the Intermediate route. You then follow the Intermediate route to Buje.

The Challenge ride begins in Tinjan with the Intermediate route but, after the Jezero Butoniga reservoir, it detours steeply uphill to the village of Oprtalj. At the top of the climb the route takes winding country roads, past the art village of Grožnjan and into Buje.

OVERNIGHT TOWN

Buje is a fortified hilltop town overlooking vineyards and olive groves. The town’s narrow alleys lead to quaint squares, art galleries, and charming restaurants. Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring local vineyards. It is also home to some of Croatia’s best olive oil.

Day Two - Buje Loops (A) or Rest Day

The highlight of today’s routes is the coastal town of Novigrad – a quaint old fishing town with some excellent seafood restaurants.

The Intermediate route starts with an eight-mile, rolling descent to the coast, arriving in the village of Lovrečica. From here, you follow the coastline south around Uvala Slanik Bay, passing an early medieval monastery, before arriving in Novigrad. After lunch and a wander in Novigrad, there is an eight-mile climb to the village of Vižinade and a fast descent to the Mirna Valley. A final climb out of the valley brings you back to Buje.

Leisure riders follow the same route to Novigrad but take a more direct route, with less climbing, back to Buje.

The Challenge route follows the Intermediate route to Vižinade where it turns south for a rolling loop via the hillfort town of Motovun, one of Istria’s best-known and most-photographed towns.

Day Three - Buje to Poreč

All of today’s routes leave Buje on a gentle four-mile climb to Grožnjan, a sleepy hilltop Town of Artists , with a well-preserved medieval center, boutique shops, cafes, and art galleries.

From Grožnjan, the Intermediate route follows the ridgeline to the north of the Mirna valley, passing through many pretty towns including Motovun, one of the best-known and most-photographed hilltop towns in Istria. The route ends with a gradual 12-mile descent into the coastal town of Poreč.

After Grožnjan, the Leisure route turns south, bypassing Motovun, and rejoins the Intermediate route after passing Višnjan Observatory.

The Challenge route continues east along the ridge through woodland, where there are occasional views of Kaštel Petrapilosa (a medieval castle). The route then rejoins the Intermediate route in Livade.

The Epic route takes a wider eastern loop through Buzet: City of Truffles . The route climbs out of Buzet, passing various small villages, traditional farmlands, and mixed forests. The route then rejoins the Intermediate route in Livade.

Day Four -Poreč Loops or Rest Day

Today you head to the interior of the peninsula.

The Intermediate ride is a relaxing ride through traditional villages, passing vineyards, olive groves, and bucolic farmland. After about ten miles, you arrive at Sveti Lovreč, a well-preserved medieval town that was an important military base for Venice during the 14th century. The route continues to roll along small country lanes with a gentle six-mile descent back into Poreč.

Leisure riders do a shortened version of the Intermediate route, visiting small villages and passing wineries and olive groves.

The Challenge route follows the Intermediate ride to Sveti Lovreč after which it continues inland to Tinjan, considered to be the home to the best pršut (dried ham) in Istria. From here the route takes small, quiet roads back to Poréc.

The Epic route follows the Challenge route to Tinjan where it continues east to Pazin, the capital of the Istrian Peninsula. The 10th-century castle at Pazin is the best-preserved medieval fortress of central Istria. The town also has views of a dramatic gorge.

Day Five -Poreč to Rovinj

The Intermediate route leaves Poreč along a pretty bike path that hugs the Adriatic coast. After a few miles, you head inland past olive groves and vineyards. The route climbs gently for 13 miles, passing through the Venetian town of Sveti Lovreč, and summiting at the tiny hamlet of Barat. From here riders descend to the Dvigrad ruins – a town founded in the first century and abandoned in the eighteenth century. After climbing up to the small village of Kanfanar, the route descends for nine miles to Rovinj.

The Leisure route starts with a van transfer from Poreč to Sveti Lovreč where it joins the Intermediate ride.

The Challenge route follows the Intermediate route to the village of Kanfanar where it continues with an eastern loop to Žminj, well-known for its tower which originally formed part of a 15th-century castle. From this town the route descends back through Kanfanar, and rejoins the Intermediate route for the descent into Rovinj.

Rovinj is an ancient coastal town dating back to the Bronze Age. Originally a small island protected by stone walls, the channel was filled in 1763, joining it to the mainland. Its Venetian history, winding cobblestone streets, and pastel-hued houses has led to it being known as Mini Venice.

Day Six - Rovinj Loops - Last Day

Today’s Intermediate route is a gentle up-and-then-down loop ride. The ride climbs out of Rovinij to the town of Bale. This quiet and picturesque medieval town is something of a hidden gem. After Bale, you continue climbing up to Svetvinčenat, another beautiful village with a well-preserved 13th-century castle. After lunch and a look round the castle, the route rolls across countryside to Kanfanar – another castle. From Kanfanar the route heads back to the sea and you enjoy a gentle descent all the way back into Rovinj.

The Leisure route follows the Intermediate route to Bale where it turns north, cutting across the Intermediate route for a shorter ride.

The Challenge route follows the Intermediate route to Svetvinčenat. In Svetvinčenat the route detours east along quiet country lanes through small hamlets, natural woodlands, and olive groves. The route passes through Žminj and rejoins the Intermediate ride in Kanfanar for the run back into Rovinj.

BIKE CHOICES

Hybrid bike.

Hybrids bikes, a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike

Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.

Road bikes, a racing style bike with drop handlebars

Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)

eBikes, designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills

Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.

Your Own Bike, if you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there

If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.

Reviews from our friends

How Do I Know Which Croatia Bike Tour Is Right For Me?

Choosing the right Croatia bike tour boils down to two things:

  • Where in Croatia do you want to cycle?
  • What kind of experience do you want on your Croatia bike tour?

Based on the above criteria, we’ve designed the following tours to help cyclists explore the best of Croatia:

1. Split to Dubrovnik: Island Hopping the Dalmatian Coast Bike Tour

If you have beaches, islands, and exploring Croatia’s numerous UNESCO heritage sites in mind, our Split to Dubrovnik: Island Hopping the Dalmatian Coast Bike Tour is what you’re looking for.

This tour starts in Split, and covers three Dalmatian islands — Brač, Hvar, and Korčula — before ending in Dubrovnik. Besides their gorgeous beaches, these islands are also the sunniest part of Croatia, receiving more than 2700 hours of sunshine per year.

At the beginning of each day, we sail with our bikes on a boat to the next island, then spend the rest of the day exploring the island on a bike.

2. Splendors of Slovenia and Croatia Bike Tour

If you want to combine Slovenia with your Croatia bike tour, then our Splendors of Slovenia and Croatia Bike Tour is right for you. This tour begins from Ljubljana in Slovenia, covers the famous Lake Bled, and ends in Rovinj on Croatia’s north-eastern coast after traversing the Vipava Valley. On the way, it also passes through Motovun, famous for its black and white truffles that are prized in kitchens around the world.

3. The Wine Roads of Istria

If you’ve fine Croatian wines and the Adriatic coast on your mind, then this is the tour for you. Istria is also called the Tuscany of Croatia for its fine wines and its delicious truffles. The Wine Roads of Istria tour starts in Buje in northern Istria and ends in Pula in the south. Along the way, it traverses Croatia’s famously gorgeous coastline with its turquoise waters, and allows you to explore famous historical monuments including a Roman amphitheater and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What Is the Best Time For Croatia Bike Tours?

Generally, the most popular time for a bike tour in Croatia is during the spring (end of April to June) and autumn (September to October) months. During these times, the weather is typically mild, with warm temperatures and less crowded compared to the peak summer season. You'll also enjoy lush greenery and blooming flowers in the spring, while the autumn offers beautiful foliage and grape harvests in some areas.

However, if you prefer warmer weather and don't mind the crowds, the summer months (July and August) can also be a good time to cycle in Croatia. Just be prepared for higher temperatures and more tourists, especially in popular tourist destinations.

Our tours are all-inclusive, which means meals, permits, fees, transportation and other additional costs are included in the price of the trip, unless otherwise stated.

Meet at our 4-star hotel in the historic Split and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Marvie Hotel, Jupiter Heritage Hotel, or Marmont Hotel

Following your arrival in Croatia, you have the day to explore the beautiful town of Split and the Roman ruins on your own. Most visitors consider these sights a “must see” while they are in the area!

Our group will meet in our hotel at 5 pm and set up our bikes and equipment, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Enjoy the next two nights in Split at a lovely 4-star hotel in the heart of this historic city.

Ferry to island of Brač, famous for its limestone, pedal to the Olive Oil Museum for a tasting.

– Breakfast – Lunch

From the Diocletian town of Split, we will board a morning ferry to the island of Brač for the day. Stone from Brač represents the soul of the island. It has been used in the construction of some of the most famous buildings in the world: the UNESCO-protected Diocletian Palace in Split, the White House in Washington D.C., and the Pope’s altar in the Vatican – to name a few. Since the islands along the Dalmatian Coast are also famous for their olive oil, we will stop for a tasting and an overview of its history and methods of production at the Olive Oil Museum. Our Brač tour will finish at a local restaurant, called a konoba, with fresh and domestic food – a fitting reward after pedaling through this beautiful and hilly landscape. Dinner is on your own after we take the ferry back to Split for another night.

Cycle along the coastline on the island of Hvar.

– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Adriana Hotel or Riva Marina

Today we ferry from Split to the island of Hvar in the morning. While the name Hvar derives from the Greek – Pharos, the island was historically under Venetian influence. This influence is exemplified by the picturesque architecture of the town of Hvar with its spectacular coastline and climate, red tile roofs and ancient city walls. Today, take in the wondrous scent of the lavender farms as you cycle to the town of Jelsa, situated on a tranquil bay nestled between the island’s two highest peaks. We finish in the island’s namesake town, Hvar. Lodging will be at another 4-star accommodation in town with dinner at a local restaurant.

On to the island Korčula, land of oaks and pines. Sample regional cooking (peka) and wines.

Hotel Korsal or Hotel Liburna or Marko Polo Hotel

From Hvar, we will jump on a private boat to transfer to the town of Vela Luka on the island of Korčula where we will spend the next two days. During our first day on Korčula, we will cycle the island from east to the west, passing through the lush forests of holm oaks and Mediterranean pines. The island is so densely forested with that the 4th century B.C. Greeks dubbed the island “Korkyra Melaina” (dark or black Korčula). In modern times, the island is famous for its olive groves. After settling in at our 4-star hotel, we have a special dinner experience tonight. Wine is included (but that’s not what makes it special). We will be sampling peka. More of a Dalmatian cooking tradition than a recipe, peka refers to a slow-cooking method which means “cooked under the lid.” High heat and the vacuum created by the lid infuses potatoes and vegetables with flavor and renders “meat so soft you can chew it with your eyebrows”. A great variety of dishes are prepared in this delicious fashion.

Explore Korčula, a scenic town on a lovely bay. Enjoy a wine tasting on us!

– Breakfast

Today, you have a hard choice to make! You can enjoy some more riding on the island of Korčula, or you can spend the day sea kayaking, sailing, or exploring more of Korčula’s (the town’s) history and attractions.  Famous as the birthplace of renowned traveler Marco Polo, the town boasts an exhibition about the famous explorer in the center of town. Korčula is also well known for the mock battle dance (Moreška), performed only by males from Korčula town families, with each soldier holding two swords. It is traditionally performed on July 29 (St. Theodore’s Day) and weekly during the summer season. Dinner is on your own tonight. Layover day excursions are not included in the tour price, but the wine tasting is on us!

Pedal from the coastline through vineyards to the world-renowned city of Dubrovnik.

Hotel Lapad or Hotel Lero

After breakfast, we will take a short ferry to the town of Orebić on the Pelješac Peninsula. It’s a spectacular ride to an even more spectacular destination. Cycle the coast past oyster farms and stop for a fresh sample if you like! Heading inland along the peninsula, vineyards dominate the landscape. Compare the Croatian varietals you have tried with Dalmatian favorites like Pošip or Dingač. In Dubrovnik, before heading out on the town for our farewell dinner, enjoy a tour of the city, featuring some of the longest, best-preserved city walls in Europe. See why the popular TV series, Game of Thrones, chose this location for filming its capital city – “King’s Landing”. Enjoy fabulous accommodations at at either the Hotel Lapad or the Hotel Lero in Dubrovnik.

A farewell breakfast concludes our adventure.

After breakfast at our hotel (included), we make our final farewells before heading our separate ways. Shuttles to the airport or other destinations are not included.

A cyclist with their bike alongside a classic old bicycle

Croatia & The Istrian Peninsula have been popular holiday destinations among Europeans for a long time. This trip is designed to get you away from those crowds and show you the hidden gems of the region - and this is exactly my favorite part. The medieval villages of Grožnjan and Motovun are stunning surprises along the way, and the views of the Adriatic sea are as beautiful as you’d expect. We LOVED it. Truly the time of our lives. We lost ourselves in the landscape, the slow pace of life, and the incredible wine. We were challenged by the rides and left so proud of ourselves that we did it. We are also so thankful to have found a trip in our budget and it was worth every penny. Our memories and our experience was something we will always cherish and we are SO excited to plan our next Trek Travel trip!

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend you fly into Trieste and then take a train to Trieste's Central Station.

The easiest way to access Trieste Central Station and the city center from the airport is by train. The ride takes about 30 minutes and tickets cost around 5€. Trains depart from the airport approximately every 30 minutes and drop you off directly at the Central Station. For more information, visit the Trenitalia website . Alternatively you can also take bus number 51 from the airport to Trieste's central bus station (located next to the train station). This ride will take you approximately one hour. Just like at any other airport, taxis are available and prices start from 75€ to the city center.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the main entrance of the Trieste Central Station (Piazza della Libertà, 11, 34132 Trieste, Italy) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a 30-minute shuttle to your trip's starting point in Koper, Slovenia, your guides will do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Domane this week. After the bike fit, you’ll hear some safety tips and a route overview before taking your first spin along the Adriatic coast of Slovenia. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, San Canzian Village and Hotel (+385 993 020 000) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. Please note that a taxi from the airport to the trip hotel will cost approximately $230 USD.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at Hotel La Grisa. You'll then board a private shuttle which will bring you to Rovinj or Pula international airport, depending on your continuing travel plans. We highly recommend a post-trip stay in Rovinj, however, to have more time to explore and enjoy this charming town.

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Even though you will be visiting three countries on your first day of the trip, you won’t need to show your passport at border crossings, nor will you have to change money between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.
  • Euro is the currency of your trip.
  • Your American Express credit card might not work in Slovenia. While you’ll only pass through Slovenia on the first day of the trip, you may wish to bring a Visa, Mastercard, or euros in cash just in case.
  • Enjoy the gastronomy of the Istrian Peninsula. Dinners will take longer than in the US but it’s part of the cultural experience – so just relax and indulge in the tastes of Croatia! You’re on holiday after all.
  • This trip is not only about biking, it’s also a cultural trip. This means that we will stop for different cultural activities and experiences along the way, and at times enjoy more leisurely lunches during the day.

Where You'll Stay

Operated by intrepid travel.

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel

Tour itinerary

This mountain bike tour Croatia will immerse you in the laid-back way of life in this lesser-known corner of the Adriatic. Working hard on the bike each day, you’ll be rewarded with delicious local food and wine, and a relaxing massage at the hotel spa. Prepare to reinvigorate body, mind and soul in Croatia!

You should arrive in Zagreb the day before your tour start date, to allow for any travel or baggage delays, and to give yourself time to relax before your adventure begins.

Your guide will meet you at the train station in Zagreb tomorrow morning.

Your guide will meet you at Glavni Kolodvor train station, then you’ll make the 3 hour transfer to your first stop of the tour.

We will arrive in Livade, at a local ‘konoba’, where we’ll have lunch, build and fit bikes, then your guide will take you through the all-important pre-trip briefing. We’ll then start our adventure on the famous Parenzana trail.

You’ll have an easy start today, with a van transfer to the plateau of Cicarija that affords views over the entire day’s ride and all the way to the coast.

After traversing the clifftop and taking in the views we will descend to the outskirts of Buzet before picking up a rocky singletrack, with a few short, challenging climbs, that will deliver us to the mediaeval town of Hum – officially, the smallest town in the world.

The hilltop town of Grožnjan dates back to the early 12th century, and is the only town in Croatia to have an ethnic Italian majority.

We’ll ride a selection of singletrack descents that peel off from the town, dropping you to the valley floor with ever-increasing smiles. We’ll pass through Grožnjan a few times today and have lunch here.

We’ve arrived at the Adriatic! We’ll weave in and out of coastal bays, skirting the outline of the Kamenjak Peninsula, which is also a nature park. The beaches of Cape Kamenjak are the best in Istria.

Your guide will show you the way through a tangle of singletrack trails, all the way to a beach bar where we can stop for lunch and a swim in the Adriatic.

Krk is one of the Kvarner islands that offer a totally different landscape from the inland forests and the coastal trails we have ridden so far in Croatia.

After lunch, we’ll pedal to the second highest mountain on the island and start climbing to the summit on rocky singletrack. As we push off from the top, we’ll enjoy a selection of flowing and, at times, very rocky trails that weave their way through drystone walls that protect the crops from the wind.

Today we head by ferry to Rab Island, known as the ‘Happy Island’. We’ll have breakfast on deck whilst soaking up the views and morning sunshine.

We’ll ride a coastal trail on the northern part of the island, weaving in and out of secluded bays, with some of the only sandy beaches in Croatia.

To round off an incredible mountain-to-island adventure we have saved the best for the last.

Today we’ll be riding the ‘Moonland Trail’, for reasons that will become obvious. We’ll start the ride from Baška bay where we will take on a 400m ascent. The climb is gradual, so we can ride at a relatively easy pace.

Sadly today we leave Croatia behind, say our farewells and transfer back to Zagreb (around 2.5 hours) for around midday.

Create your own review

Myself and my husband had a very last-minute decision to head out to Croatia to see what the mountain biking had to offer over there. Both keen bikers for years, we had been off the pedals for a few months following injuries/surgery. H+I were amazing. Catherine was very quick to communicate and put together a trip to fit our dates and request for some mellower pedals. We flew over with our bikes and hired a car from Split (as we wanted the freedom to do some more exploring before/after the trip). Of note: H+I do not normally run trips in July in this area. Temperatures were over 30 each day but we knew this going into it so our days included swimming at any opportunity and lots of evening riding. I would recommend sticking to the cooler months, which would also be less busy on the roads with summer holiday campers! Over the time we had two excellent guides, Dani and Andrej. They made sure all logistics were covered – not just the biking but also transport and dinner plans – meaning the days ran super smoothly. Both were hot on the photos also, so we now have a rare series of pics of both of us on the bikes! The days built up nicely from some truly beautiful and rocky rides around the islands and beaches of Krk and Rab to get our confidence up which was ideal. The Babewatch track at Rabac stayed true to its reputation as a wheel shredder (pump up your tyres well if you are doing this one!). I recommend taking snorkels for a dip in the pristine seas at the end. Our final day was on the tracks around Groznjan. We felt like the week had been building up to this single track, steep and techy fun. Cards on the table, the price tag is high (we private guided at short notice) BUT you get what you pay for, it was a truly 5-star service with great guides who knew the trails and areas like the back of their hands. So, if you want to know that your precious days of mtb holiday will be the stuff of great legend, these guys will deliver. Post trip note: On a recommendation from Dani we then took ourselves over to Slovenia and the fantastic Golovec trails out of Ljubljana. It felt the “getting back out shreddin” mission was well and truly complete.
I have been taking off-road bike trips of different sorts (mountain/gravel/adventure) with various operators over the past 10 years and done circa 30 trips. This was my first with H+I. They are first class operators in every way and among the best I've experienced. I 100% backup every word of David Lagerquist's review (see below) who was in our hilarious crew. (Fun fact: Mountain Biking attracts the best people.) Guides Matej and Luka seemed to have some sort of telepathic powers and were able to read our minds. They went above and beyond to make sure we were all happy. It takes a helluva lot of work, thought, planning and attention to detail consistently pull the rabbits out of hats required to create such a memorable experience. Thanks to the whole magical crew! Post note: I also went on the Slovenia Alps to Adriatic trip same month, which was equally brilliant in every way.

Swimming break in the picturesque bay of St. Mara.

  • Cycling for the day (option 1): 22km, ↑↓160m, 100% asphalt road
  • Cycling for the day (option 2): 21km, ↑↓150m, 95% asphalt road / 5 % macadam
  • Included meals : breakfast, lunch

Day 4: Pag – Ilovik | 35km

After a short crossing to the island of Pag, we start a bike tour along the island’s beautiful moon-like landscape. The first stop is the village of Lun, with thousand years old olive trees and many stone walls. Be careful when cycling on this island due to the many wandering sheep. The island is famous for its Pag cheese. We highly recommend a break in a traditional ‘konoba’ tavern to taste the cheese. In the idyllic village of Mandre, we return to the ship and have lunch on board. We continue our cruise to the flower island of Ilovik, where you will have opportunities to stroll, swim and relax.

Day 5: Island of Lošinj | 22km

After breakfast, we leave for Mali Lošinj. Bike tour through the lovely Čikat peninsula surrounded by pine trees with some time to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Continue to the picturesque village of Veli Lošinj and back to the ship for lunch. Afternoon easy ride to one of the beaches or to the Sveti Ivan hill (250m) or the theme viewpoint Providenca where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and the southern part of the Lošinj archipelago.

  • Cycling for the day (option 1): 20km, ↑↓180m, 95% asphalt road / 5 % macadam
  • Included meals: breakfast, lunch

Day 6: Island of Lošinj and Cres | 46km

After breakfast, we cycle through the pine and laurel trees towards Cres island (connected to Mali Losinj by a small bridge) with our first stop in the artistic village of Osor, and we take more strenuous cycling towards the fishing village of Martinscica, where lunch will be served on board. We continue our cruise towards the historic town of Cres for a leisurely evening and overnight.

  • Cycling for the day: 46km, ↑↓500m, 95% asphalt road / 5 % macadam

Day 7: Opatija Riviera | 27km

During breakfast, the ship departs for Mošćenička Draga on the Opatija Riviera. From there, we cycle along the coastal road with spectacular views of the sea and the islands to the village of Brseč, situated on a rock above the sea. After the break, we continue to cycle to St Jelena hill with the stunning panorama on Kvarner Bay. Descend to Mošćenice – a medieval town situated on Perun hill’s foot and further to Lovran, where the ship is waiting. Lunch on board and sailing to Opatija, where you have a free evening to admire this enchanting city, walk through the parks or along the 12 km long sea promenade called Lungomare. Overnight in Opatija.

  • Cycling for the day: 27km, ↑↓450m, 100% asphalt road

Day 8: Departure

Early morning breakfast and check out.

  • Included meals: breakfast

During the trip, you will be based on a traditional ship, offering accommodation in simple but comfortable en-suite double or twin cabins, mostly with bunk beds. There are also lower deck cabins available at a lower price. There is free wifi on the ships. The ships can accommodate 32 – 40 people.

Continental breakfast and lunch or dinner (as detailed in the itinerary) are included in the package. We recommend stops at local restaurants during the cycling sections where you can taste the local specialities; these meals are not included in the price of the trip. There is a possibility to book a Captain’s Dinner, which is paid directly on the spot and is offered by the captain and your tour guide.

Difficulty and terrain

This trip requires good physical condition as daily cycling can reach up to 48km. There is also an option for renting an e-bike, making the trip practically accessible to anyone (read more about difficulty grades). This is a guided tour, so during the cycling, you will be accompanied by a guide showing you the way and assisting you with bike maintenance in case of need.

This trip is available on Saturdays from mid-April until early June and from the end of August until early October (for available departure dates, click the CHECK AVAILABILITY button above).

Croatia’s coast and islands, from Istria and Kvarner in the north through to Dalmatia in the south, are governed by a Mediterranean climate, although it is usually several degrees cooler in the northern Adriatic than in the south. In the summer, the mean temperature is between 24C and 26C along the coast. For more information, see our blog,  Best time to go to Croatia .

Istria - A cyclists paradise and 500 km of stunning coastline

The name Istria comes from the Histrian tribe who lived in the region in ancient times. Istria, the largest peninsular in Croatia, is a region of spectacular scenery perfect for island hopping tours such as our “ Bicycle Cruise Highlights of Istria ” our MTB & Boat tour " Highlights of Istria MTB " or our Ebike & Boat tour " Highlights of Istria PLUS "

Located between the Kvarner Bay and the Gulf of Trieste, Istria is an oasis of superlatives. Countless beautiful beaches line the 500 km of coastline, and the fascinating harbour towns of Pula, Poreč and Rovinj each offer their own unique charm. Further inland, you’ll find characteristic medieval hilltop villages and picturesque wineries, that thrive on the fertile soil found there.

The home of truffles entices with its cultural and culinary abundance. Boasting more than 2,300 hours of sunshine per year, a holiday in Istria is guaranteed to be full of sun and relaxation.

Winegrower in vineyard in Istria.

Kvarner Bay: Every island is unique

If you are looking for variety on your holiday, you are guaranteed to find it in the Kvarner Bay. This multi-faceted region reveals its varied nature in its very name. After the fall of the Roman colony of Flanona, today Plomin in Istria, the region was named “mare quaternarium”. The name referred to the four directions ships could sail to from the region: West towards Venice and Ravenna, east to Senj, north to Rijeka and south to Zadar. The Latin word “Quarner” means “four parts” and it is from this that the current-day name “Kvarner” Bay developed.

The Kvarner Bay, both on the tranquil islands as well as on the mainland, is an idyll of Mediterranean beauty. A cruise through this region to the major islands of Krk , Cres, Lošinj, Pag and Rab is as if made for a Bike & Boat tour and is sure to fulfil any cyclist’s holiday dreams. Whether the almost car-free roads of Dugi Otok with their spectacular panoramas, the fantastic trails and nature paths on Krk or the Mediterranean forests on Rab – the Kvarner Bay is one of the best places to go in Croatia for a variety-packed cycling holiday . On your Islandhopping trip you can explore the small historic harbour towns along the Adriatic Sea such as Opatija, the oldest seaside resort in Croatia, and enjoy the healing mud baths in Soline, and the flowering magnolias and oleanders on the island of Molat.

No matter where you go, there is always something new to discover and taste: try the famous Pag cheese or the golden wine, Žlahtina, from the island of Krk. The Kvarner Bay is arguably one of the most beautiful regions and certainly one of the top destinations in Croatia. What’s more, the region is perfect for exploring by bike & boat! Whatever your preference may me: a tour by hybrid-bike or an e-bike plus tour , or by mountainbike – the Kvarner Bay has something to offer every cycling fan!

Dalmatia: Breath-taking nature and historical treasures

From national parks with cascading waterfalls to imposing cliffs that dive into the sea, the diverse region of Dalmatia is waiting to be explored. This stunning south Croatian coast and island world has an abundance on offer and is home to some of the most beautiful islands in Croatia. Experience centuries of history at the numerous UNESCO sites scattered across Dalmatia such as Diocletian's Palace in Split and the old towns of Trogir and Dubrovnik , the latter of which can be recognised from the award-winning series Game of Thrones . Dubrovnik was not only used as ‘Kings Landing’ in the series but is also home to a number of recognisable Game of Thrones filming locations. Dalmatia can also lay claim to one of the most picturesque beaches in the world, with the “Golden Horn” beach on Brač having been given the title by Forbes magazine. Numerous islands, varied terrain, a delicious cuisine and an exciting history await you on our island hopping tours in Dalmatia. Whether your preference be hybrid bike, e-bike or mountain bike, the almost car-free roads and the incredible island trails make a biketour an unforgettable experience. The diverse islands of Hvar, Vis, Korčula and Mljet are waiting to be explored with plenty of must-do activities along the way.

If you are looking for a family-friendly holiday in the sunny south of Croatia, then look no further! Our Croatian summer Multi-Adventure Cruise combines the advantages of a “blue voyage” with a number of varied activities both on land and water. With cycling, hiking, sightseeing, beach Olympics and plenty of seaside fun on offer, there is something for the whole family!
