"Cultural Capital of Assam"

Tezpur tourism.

Tezpur, located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river in the Sonitpur district of Assam, is known as the cultural capital of the state. Deeply rooted in historical and cultural significance, the city is famous for its lush greenery, heritage sites, lakes and the national parks nearby. Located around 180 km northeast of Guwahati, the city is also known popularly in Assam as 'The City of Eternal Love'.

The snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas and neighbouring Arunachal's hills form a gorgeous backdrop to the city. Archaeologically, Tezpur is teeming with ruins, inscriptions and imprints of former royal families and age-old temples that are a testament to the city's rich historical past. Visitors will also find numerous tea gardens in the neighbouring regions of the city, with a few plantations hosting stays and estates from the British Raj era. The nationally famed Tezpur University is also located near Tezpur, making young adults the common sightseers in and around the city. Moreover, being located close to the border of Arunachal Pradesh, there are several spots where tourists can take a day trip and enjoy picnics as well. Nameri National Park is one such protected area where visitors can enjoy a leisurely day out amidst nature.

How to Reach Tezpur, Assam: A Traveler’s Guide

Tezpur, the cultural heart of Assam, is a destination that’s as much about the journey as it is about the location. So if you’re wondering how to voyage to this historical city, we’ve got a detailed guide right here. Let’s dive in!

Tezpur Airport (Salonibari Airport)

  • Location : Approximately 10 km from the city center.
  • Airlines : While the frequency of flights might not be as extensive as major hubs, Tezpur is connected with direct flights from cities like Kolkata and Guwahati .
  • After Landing : Once you land, you can avail taxis or auto-rickshaws to reach the city. It’s advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the journey or opt for app-based cabs if available.

Tezpur Railway Station

  • Connectivity : Tezpur Railway Station, although not the largest, does enjoy good connectivity with several parts of Assam and neighboring states.
  • Reaching the City : Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and shared vehicles are available outside the railway station.

Rangapara North Railway Station

  • Location : Located about 20 km from Tezpur, Rangapara serves as a major railhead for the region.
  • Connectivity : The station has better connectivity than the Tezpur Railway Station, with trains from major cities across India.
  • Getting to Tezpur : Pre-paid taxi services and auto-rickshaws can be hired to reach Tezpur from Rangapara.

Tezpur has an excellent network of roads, connecting it with major cities and towns.

  • From Guwahati : National Highway 15 connects Tezpur with Guwahati, the largest city of Assam. The journey by road is about 180 km and offers picturesque views of the Assamese countryside.
  • Bus Services : Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and private operators run regular buses to Tezpur from various parts of Assam and neighboring states.
  • Self-drive : If you’re someone who loves road trips, the roads leading to Tezpur are a treat, especially during the monsoon when the landscapes are lush green.

The majestic Brahmaputra is more than just a river; it stands as the region’s lifeline. Venturing by water might not be the typical choice for many travelers, but it promises a mesmerizing scenic experience.

  • From Guwahati : Ferries operate between Guwahati and Tezpur, offering passengers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the breathtaking grandeur of the river and its lush environs.
  • Timings & Availability: Before setting sail, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the ferry schedules. Be mindful that the monsoon season can bring unpredictable river conditions, which may influence ferry operations.

Traveler’s Tip

Should time be your ally, embrace the allure of diverse transit options. You might, for example, land in Guwahati by air and then embark on a road or river journey to Tezpur. Such a blend not only captures Assam’s multifaceted landscapes but also offers a rich tapestry of travel experiences.

In Conclusion

Nestled in Assam’s embrace, Tezpur unfolds like a living canvas, blending mythology, history, nature, and artistry. More than its picturesque landmarks, it’s the city’s tales, whispered from every corner, that truly captivates. Whether you’re drawn to age-old narratives, artistic marvels, or nature’s wonders, Tezpur unfurls itself as a waiting masterpiece.

To echo the sentiment of a wanderer, Tezpur transcends being merely a destination; it’s a voyage through epochs gone by. So, ready your spirit and your suitcase, and let Tezpur, this ageless gem of Assam, regale you with its stories.

Tezpur’s local/domestic airport is the Salonibari Airport, about 10 km from the city center, which has flight operations from Silchar and Kolkata with Air India and the closest international airport to the city is the Lokpriya Gopinath Bodoloi International Airport, Guwahati , which is well connected to all of India’s major metros and is roughly 165 km from the city. From Delhi the best way to reach Tezpur is to fly to the city at an estimated cost of INR 7,000 in 6 hours and 40 minutes via Indigo, Air Asia or Vistara Airlines.

Accessible by most Indian cities, train travel to Tezpur from New Delhi begins at the Anand Vihar Terminal, where you can board a train to Rangapara North (twice a week) and reach there in approximately 34 hours. From Rangapara North the travel distance by road in a taxi is roughly 28km and less than 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can travel by bus from Delhi to Gorakhpur in about 11 ½ hours and then make the train ride of 22 ½ hours to Rangapara North from Gorakhpur, with the onward journey in a taxi to Tezpur.

To travel by road, the best option would be to board a bus from New Delhi to Gorakhpur and then make the train journey to Rangapara North. From the Super Bazar in Delhi to Anand Vihar ISBT there’s a bus every 10 minutes. On reaching there, you can walk it down to the Kausambi Bus Station and board a bus to Gorakhpur which leaves 4 times a day and takes about 11 hours and 30 minutes. However, comparatively, this alternative is quite exhausting and is hence best left out.

Life Stories by Veena Patil

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most. While places have taken care of themselves, here’s my podcast, which I consider to be a great platform, through which I can share some interesting stories I live and love on a daily basis with all you wonderful people out there. I hope you enjoy the journey... Let’s go, celebrate life!
