  • Your TSA Guide to Traveling with Sunscreen

The Best Travel-Size Sunscreens Perfect for Your Carry-On

How to choose travel sunscreen by destination, the tl;dr on tsa liquid limits.

Traveling with sunscreen and other liquids can be confusing. Luckily, we consulted with our besties at TSA, so you don't have to.

Can you travel with full-size sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with full-size sunscreen. However, due to unforch TSA rules, it will need to be added to checked baggage if it contains over 3.4 fluid ounces of liquid, aerosol or gel.

What size sunscreen can you carry on a plane?

You can carry liquids, gel and aerosol sunscreen in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces Per TSA regulations, each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of these items. For more information regarding traveling with liquids, you can view TSA's liquid packing guide here or contact your booked airline directly.

Can you travel with spray sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with spray sunscreen on a plane. A cap must cover travel sunscreen sprays with an aerosol nozzle to prevent accidental release.

Take note: travel-sized sunscreen spray for the face is pretty easy to find at your local Target , Sephora or Ulta . However, most spray sunscreen for the body comes in full size, which is above TSA's carry-on regulations. So this may have to be an item that needs to be packed in your checked luggage or purchased at your destination.

Does stick sunscreen count as liquid?

Stick sunscreen does not count as a liquid and is allowed in your carry-on bag with no size limitation; it also does not need to be packed in your quart-sized liquid bag (love that for us.)

So now that you know the rules, it's time to play by them. We don't gatekeep at The Knot, so here's a round-up of some of the best travel-size sunscreens for your upcoming honeymoon, bachelorette weekend or destination wedding.

Ok, we just gave you a list of awesome shoppable options, and while all of these SPF choices are sun-worthy, your honeymoon destination can help you narrow down your decision. Like, what is the best sunscreen for the beach? What about colder climates? Let's quickly chat about the UV index, altitude and destination regulations you may want to consider when choosing your travel-size sunscreen.

SPF Levels: UV Index and Altitude

Just because your honeymoon is in the Swiss Alps doesn't mean you are exempt from needing sunscreen. In fact, elevation levels can drastically affect the amount of UV you are exposed to. In fact, according to Reuters, for every 1,000 feet of altitude, you gain around 10% more UV exposure. That means you have more exposure in the mountains than on the beach!

There's also the UV Index, which provides a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun. The index predicts UV intensity levels on a scale of 1 to 11+, where 1 indicates a minimal risk of overexposure and 11+ means a very high risk. You can use your weather app or simply Google the city name and UV index today.

Regardless of where you spend your honeymoon days, it's recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology that everyone apply a broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30 or higher around 15 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should be reapplied to the face and body approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Beach Benefits: Waterproof & Reef-Safe

Waterproof Sunscreen. If you plan on going for a dip in the pool or a morning run on the beach, your travel sunscreen must be sweat- and water-resistant. This means that it's designed to stay on your skin for anywhere from 40 to 80 minutes, even when you're sweating or swimming. Be sure to reapply water-resistant sunscreen after this time period or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen. Reef-safe sunscreens are products that do not use UV-blocking oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are known to cause coral bleaching. When coral turns white, it causes severe stress and makes it susceptible to disease or death. The terms "reef-friendly" and "reef-safe are not currently regulated as of 2023, so be sure to check the ingredient label on the back of your travel-size sunscreen.

In the United States, Hawaii and the city of Key West, Florida , have banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. There has been a ban on sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene in the U.S. Virgin Islands as of March 2020. Then there's Australia , which has some of the strictest sunscreen regulations in the world, where products must undergo extensive testing before being placed on shelves.

Mineral vs. Chemical. The key difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens is that mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and blocks rays at the surface using ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, while chemical sunscreens absorb rays like a sponge using ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate.

Mineral sunscreens tend to be better suited for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin and are better trusted when it comes to concerns about reef safety. However, the formulas can be thick and potentially leave a white cast on those with darker skin tones. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, are lighter and less likely to leave an annoying white cast, but they can have ingredients that can irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Sunscreen Stick vs. Spray vs. Lotion: Does It Matter?

All sunscreen forms can provide great protection and coverage. It's all about personal preference and proper application. Spray sunscreen is easy to apply, but it can also easily end up being picked up by the wind as opposed to landing on your skin. Lotions and sticks, on the other hand, provide direct contact and are more likely to provide a thick layer of protection and stay on through a long day of sweating in the sun. So, if you're looking for a quickie, the spray is the way to go, but for maximal protection, a sunscreen stick or lotion is your best bet.

13 Best Travel Size Sunscreens

If you’re planning a vacation to the beach, island, or other sunny places, don’t forget to bring sunscreen. It will prevent sunburn and protect you against other risks of sun exposure. But if you prefer to pack lightly, you can choose among the best travel size sunscreens out there.

Regardless of the packaging, travel size sunscreens provide the same benefits as their full-size versions. They’ll protect you from intense UV rays in the middle of the day, which in turn reduces the risk of premature aging, wrinkles, or even skin cancer. However, the difference is that it won’t take up much space in your luggage and there’s no risk of being confiscated at the airport.

But with so many options out there, where do you start? To help you out, we’ve put together a list of the 13 best travel size sunscreens. But before we get started, check out some of these helpful tips.

How to Choose Best Travel Size Sunscreens

Carrying large bottles of sunscreen is uncomfortable and prohibited by most airlines. This is exactly why you should opt for a travel size sunscreen. Besides, you can carry it around and re-apply it whenever needed. But since it will directly affect your skin, you should consider allergy, absorption, and side effects before picking one. Other than that, don’t forget about ease of use because you may not have time for a skincare routine during your trip. So, let’s take a look at some of the factors you should consider before choosing the best travel-size sunscreen.

Wherever you buy a travel size sunscreen, make sure it is labeled ‘broad-spectrum’. This means that the product provides protection not only against UVA rays but also UVB. The former is believed to cause premature aging and skin cancer, while the latter is a cause of sunburn.

Sun protection factor (SPF)

You’ll want a sunscreen with an SPF of more than 30. That’s because the higher the number, the more protection it offers. For example, a sunscreen with SPF 15 will only prevent sunburn but does not reduce the risk of skin cancer or premature aging. So make sure you take this into account before buying.

Ease of Reapplication

Sunscreen is easily rubbed off by water or sweat. For optimal effect, you need to reapply it every two hours. This is why you should choose a sunscreen with compact packaging. That way, it will be easy to grab and reapply at any time. However, if the size does not really matter to you, you could always opt for regular size product, such as Sea and Ski Sunscreen .

Water-Resistant

Yes, you read that right. There’s no best travel size sunscreen out there that’s waterproof or sweat-proof. The best they can do is make sure it lasts long enough when you swim or sweat. So before you buy, check this information on the back of the packaging. This way, you’ll know exactly when to reapply. Most will suggest every two hours, especially during intense activity.

Banana Boat Ultra Sport

If you’re planning to visit the hardest mountains to climb or do some other intense activity while on vacation, then you definitely need a high-performance sunscreen like Banana Boat Ultra Sport . It offers great resistance to water and sweat, for up to 80 minutes! They also use a fast-absorbing formula, so your skin won’t feel greasy at all. WHAT IS TRAVEL-SIZED SUNSCREEN?

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) , travel-sized sunscreen containers are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) in size. If you bring larger sunscreen for travel, you’ll need to pack it in your checked baggage, not your carry-on item.

light bulb icon

WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTIONS ON SUNSCREEN FOR TRAVEL?

If your travel sunscreen comes in a liquid, aerosol, or cream formula, the product must be no bigger than 3.4 oz to go in a carry-on and through airport security. Larger containers must go in a checked suitcase, no matter how empty or full the contents may be.

For longer vacations that require ample sun protection, it’s best to pour your SPF product into multiple travel-sized sunscreen bottles to ensure your item isn’t confiscated at the TSA security checkpoint.

To facilitate the screening process, passengers are asked to place their liquid items into one clear, tamper-evident, quart-sized bag separate from their carry-on bag, which must be screened and cleared before boarding. This is often referred to as the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3 (approximate ounces per container) in 1 (quart-sized bag) per 1 (passenger).

Note: As of June 30, 2018, the revised TSA policy states that passengers traveling to the U.S. from an international last-point-of-departure with powder-based substances greater than 12 oz (350mL) in a carry-on may require additional screening. For your convenience, it’s encouraged to pack powder substances, such as travel sunscreen, in your checked luggage regardless of their size.

light bulb icon

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T BRING TRAVEL-SIZE SUNBLOCK**?

Although it’s possible for a prohibited item to make it past TSA screening without triggering an alarm, the situation is very rare. Also, according to TSA guidelines , even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it signals an alarm.

If your item(s) set off an alarm, a TSA officer will first ask you to confirm ownership of the luggage, then request you to remove the object in question for further inspection. Any item that’s deemed prohibited or cannot be screened will not be permitted past security. Federal law and operational considerations restrict the return of prohibited items that are left at the security checkpoint.

Ultimately, the final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.

*Sunblock is not a term approved by the FDA. Colorescience refers to our products as sun protection.

light bulb icon

WHY CAN’T I TRAVEL WITH SUNSCREEN TO CERTAIN STATES OR COUNTRIES?

In some locations, such as Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, your travel sunscreen may be prohibited depending on the UV filter contained in the product’s ingredient label. These states and countries ban sunscreens that use certain chemicals known to kill coral reef* and harm ecosystems.

light bulb icon

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL VS. MINERAL TRAVEL-SIZE SUNSCREEN?

According to EPA.gov , some sunscreen works using chemical active ingredients to absorb UV radiation and convert the energy into heat, which is then released back out through the body before DNA damage occurs. These products are applied onto skin, then absorb past the skill cell barrier and into the bloodstream, where the chemical reaction occurs and filters UV light.

These products contain harsh chemicals — such as oxybenzone — and cause hazardous pollution that can damage the environment when washed off into water systems. Since these chemicals can enter the bloodstream after application, they often leave behind toxins that continue to circulate throughout the body. Many people also experience uncomfortable irritation to the heat reaction caused by the UV filters.

Mineral sunscreen, sometimes called physical sunscreen, works differently because it contains all-natural active ingredients that rest on top of the outer layer of skin. The minerals have reflective properties and scatter light away from the body to protect against radiation.

These products are considered reef-safe* sunscreen as they do not harm ocean wildlife, so they’re permissible for swimming in tropical locations. Since the ingredients do not transcend past the skin cell barrier into the bloodstream, they’re much gentler and less likely to trigger a heat rash, redness, irritation, or allergic reaction.

light bulb icon

WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF SUNSCREEN TO TRAVEL WITH?

Generally speaking, mineral powder sunscreen is best for travel because there are fewer restrictions on how much you can bring and where you can use it. It’s also very easy to reapply on-the-go, and less likely to make a mess in your luggage caused by changes in air pressure at increased altitudes.

However, the TSA has determined that liquids, aerosols, creams, and powders are safe to bring aboard aircraft cabins in limited quantities. This means that you have the choice to choose which type of formula best aligns with your preferences.

At Colorescience, you can shop travel-sized sunscreen that comes in the form of powder, liquid, or stick application, so you have no shortage of options.

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

While you can use any sunscreen on your face (any SPF is better than none), face sunscreen targets the more sensitive skin in that area. Whether you’re vacationing somewhere tropical or integrating SPF into your everyday skincare routine, it’s worth it to invest in a protective and moisturizing face sunscreen.

There are tons of trusted skincare brands on the market, so we went to work to research and choose 24 face sunscreen contenders to test in our New York City lab. We then sent them out into the real world to be further tested in everyday scenarios. We compared the formulas based on opacity levels, water resistance, texture feel, and we even used a moisture reader device in the lab to test hydration levels. The sunscreens highlighted below impressed us with silky smooth formulas that offered all-day protection. Plus, most of these face sunscreens have TSA-friendly bottles under 3.4 ounces, meaning they can easily be tossed in a carry-on.

Best Overall

Summer fridays shadedrops spf 30 mineral milk sunscreen.

  • Feel 4.8 /5
  • Transfer 5 /5
  • Opacity 5 /5
  • Water Resistance 5 /5
  • Removal 5 /5

This thin-consistency sunscreen goes on effortlessly and absorbs extremely fast.

It’s fairly runny.

This face sunscreen from Summer Fridays is the perfect addition to your everyday skincare routine since it feels nearly weightless, especially under makeup. Ideal for a range of skin types, the formula leaves a nice healthy glow that isn’t greasy, and the ingredient list includes zinc oxide for UV protection and squalane for soft and smooth skin. The soothing feeling of applying the sunscreen is immediately followed with quick absorption that leaves the skin feeling hydrated without a white cast or residue left behind. A little bit of the watery formula can cover the entire face, and although the tube is only 1.7 ounces, it will last you a long time. Plus, it’s TSA-friendly so it can be placed in a carry-on or personal item with ease. If you’re headed to the beach, this mineral formula is free of nanoparticles, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other chemicals that can be harmful to reefs and wildlife. Note, however, that the formula isn’t water resistant so you'll want to double up with a water resistant sunscreen for extra protection if you’re going swimming.

Best Unscented

Supergoop unseen sunscreen spf 40.

  • Feel 4.9 /5
  • Opacity 4.4 /5

It feels weightless to wear as a daily sunscreen or layered under other products.

There’s a slightly oily residue after wearing it all day.

Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen truly lives up its name of looking and feeling nearly invisible all day long. The transparent formula doesn’t leave a white cast or have a shiny finish, but you might notice a slightly greasy feeling at the end of the day, especially if you have oily skin. Best of all, this weightless sunscreen lacks fragrance which is better for sensitive skin and it doesn't cause any irritation or eye stinging when washing your face at the end of the day. If you’re swimming in the ocean or working out, the sunscreen offers 40 minutes of water resistance before it needs to be reapplied.

The Details: SPF 40 | 1.7 ounces | 40 minute water resistance | Oil free | Fragrance free

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Best Splurge

Isdin eryfotona actinica mineral spf 50+ sunscreen.

  • Opacity 4.7 /5

A small amount of this sunscreen goes a long way and it absorbs very quickly.

There is a slight white cast that disappears once it absorbs.

If your skincare budget is on the higher end, ISDIN’s daily mineral sunscreen has near-perfect scores across all of our testing categories. Although this formula is mineral-based, the texture is very milky and watery so a little bit of sunscreen from the 3.4-ounce tube will cover your entire face with ease. In under 15 minutes, the sunscreen absorbs into the skin, leaving behind a slight white cast you might notice while applying it, but will disappear once fully absorbed. When faced with water or sweat, the sunscreen remains absorbed into your skin without running into your eyes or causing a stinging feeling, and it offers up to 40 minutes of water resistance. Plus, it can easily be layered over makeup or moisturizer when it’s time to reapply.

The Details: SPF 50+ | 3.4 ounces | 40 minute water resistance | Mineral based

Best Tinted

Iris & romeo weekend skin spf 50 + vitamin c + glow.

Iris & Romeo

  • Opacity 4.8 /5

The glowy formula is so lightweight it doesn’t even feel like sunscreen.

We wish it were a bit more hydrating.

This two-in-one face sunscreen and primer has a silky texture that will leave your skin with a glowy finish thanks to the tinted formula. The directions on the tube recommend applying generously as the lightweight texture isn’t very hydrating, so you may also want to put on extra moisturizer if you have dry skin. Made with vegan and reef-safe ingredients, the list includes vitamin C, vitamin E, chamomile, and allantoin to hydrate and soothe the skin while the zinc oxide SPF 50 offers broad-spectrum protection from harmful UV rays. While you may need to keep applying the sunscreen throughout the day to keep the glow going, the formula is super easy to take off with micellar water at night. Best of all, you can save room in your toiletry bag since you won't have to pack separate skin care products.

The Details: SPF 50 | 1.18 ounces | Reef safe | Vegan

Best Budget

Hero cosmetics superlight sunscreen spf 30.

  • Opacity 4.3 /5
  • Removal 4 /5

The sunscreen is sheer which makes it very easy to keep applying throughout the day.

It may take some extra effort to rub in due to its green tint.

This wallet-friendly face sunscreen from Hero is perfect for everyday wear thanks to its lightweight and soothing texture. It’s super easy to reapply this watery formula all day long since it blends into the skin seamlessly and doesn’t leave a white cast or residue for a sheer and slightly glowy end result. Because the sunscreen is made with what the brand calls a “green surge,” the antioxidant superfood botanical ingredient gives it a light green tint which needs a little extra rubbing in to get a completely transparent finish. After massaging it into the face, you can easily layer other beauty products on top or let the natural glow from the sunscreen radiate on its own. It won’t irritate your eyes when it comes off at the end of the day, and it can even be worn in a sweaty workout class without having to worry about the sunscreen transferring onto your clothing or getting in your eyes.

The Details: SPF 30 | 1.69 ounces | Reef safe | Mineral based | Fragrance free

Best Mineral

Kinship moisturizing sunscreen.

The texture is much lighter and less cakey than in most mineral-based sunscreens.

It has a pink tint to it.

Mineral-based sunscreen can get a bad rap, but we were blown away by the lightweight feel and transparent application of this one by Kinship. The subtle vanilla-scented formula is packed full of vegan and reef-safe ingredients like turmeric, jojoba, and coconut, as well as other plant-based probiotics designed for soothing sensitive skin. With a similar texture as a creamy lotion, the sunscreen applies evenly, and two lengths of a finger is the perfect amount to cover the entire face. There is a pinkish tint to this sunscreen which leaves more of a glowy look than a white cast, but it’s still slightly noticeable on the skin after it absorbs. The more sunscreen you use, the more of a sheen will be left on your face, but luckily it’s more of a glowy sheen than a greasy one.

The Details: SPF 32 | 1.75 ounces | Reef safe | Mineral based | Vegan

Best Hybrid

Cocokind silk spf.

  • Opacity 4.9 /5
  • Water Resistance 4 /5

The silky formula combines mineral and chemical SPF for sun protection and a smooth texture.

It runs when it comes into contact with water.

Get the best of both worlds with this hybrid Cocokind sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection from mineral compounds with the smoother and lighter texture of chemical compounds. The sunscreen applies like a lotion (although slightly greasier) and dries quickly without leaving a film behind. During our tests, it didn’t transfer onto clothes but it did come off and run a bit when we sprayed water onto our face. However, it’s not designed to be water resistant and the brand does recommend putting a layer of sunscreen with water resistance on top if you’re planning to swim. A little bit of this sunscreen goes a long way, so although the tube is only 1.7 ounces, it does last a while, even with daily use.

Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35

The ultra-lightweight formula has a cooling feel to it.

It dries fairly quickly so you’ll need to rub it in right away.

This unique sunscreen from Glossier has a gel-like texture that feels very cooling and hydrating as it glides onto the skin. It dries super quickly so you’ll need to rub it in fast, but the end result leaves your skin feeling moisturized without any residue left over. Because the jelly material is so lightweight and quick-drying, it’s easy to keep applying the sunscreen throughout the day as needed. The product remains in place even when it comes into contact with water or sweat, so it may take an extra rinse to clean your face at the end of the day. If any of the sunscreen gets into your eyes by accident, the formula doesn’t sting or cause irritation. It also comes in a small 1-ounce container so it's perfect to stick in a carry-on or personal item.

Best Travel Size

Black girl sunscreen broad spectrum spf 30.

  • Feel 4.3 /5
  • Water Resistance 4.5 /5

The formula absorbs into the skin seamlessly and comes in a 3-ounce bottle, adhering to the TSA regulations.

It gets a little oily at the end of the day.

Black Girl Sunscreen is a woman-of-color-owned business that creates sunscreen designed for darker skin tones, with an ingredient list that includes carrot juice, jojoba, avocado, cacao, and sunflower oil. With a formula that offers 80 minutes of water resistance and comes in a 3-ounce bottle, this sunscreen is an all-around travel-friendly favorite. Plus, the sunscreen is fragrance-free, making it better suited for sensitive skin, but it does leave a slightly oily sheen so it may not be best for those with oily skin. For a more liquidy formula, the texture is still thick enough that it absorbs into the skin quickly and doesn’t run off or leave a white cast after your face gets wet, so it’s ideal for working out or swimming.

Best for Outdoor Activities

Coola classic face organic sunscreen lotion.

The thicker formula absorbs into the skin evenly and offers up to 80 minutes of water resistance.

It has a slightly oily finish.

Whether you’re swimming, hiking, biking, or running outdoors, this Coola face sunscreen has a thick texture that absorbs evenly into the skin and leaves a dewy finish once it’s been massaged thoroughly into your face. With up to 80 minutes of water resistance, this face sunscreen boasts the same protection as body sunscreen, but its non-irritating formula is better suited to more sensitive facial skin. The broad spectrum formula has an SPF of 50 and it excludes harmful chemicals like octinoxate and oxybenzone so you can snorkel or swim near reefs without harming them. We noticed a slightly oily or shiny residue that was left over after rubbing it in, but there was no white cast or streaking, and the sunscreen didn’t run down our face when it got wet or sweaty.

Other Face Sunscreens We Liked

The face sunscreens below are all excellent options, but compared to our top-performing sunscreens they fell slightly behind due to minor issues like formula texture and opacity. Still, we felt they were worth an honorable mention.

EltaMD UV Daily Face Sunscreen Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid : The formula is non-irritating and it applies very smoothly, but it leaves a fairly thick white cast, so it may be more of a beach day essential rather than worn underneath makeup on a daily basis.

Dr. Rossi Derm MD The Day Formula : It’s a thick formula that still layers evenly under makeup, but it takes some serious rubbing to get it fully absorbed into the skin without leaving residue or a white cast. Plus, the high price point was also a downside since the tube is quite small.

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Sunscreen : With a similar feel to a lightweight lotion, this formula spread smoothly across our face without leaving a residue or white cast. However, it didn’t layer well over foundation and concealer, so it pilled throughout the day.

After thoroughly researching a number of face sunscreens, we chose 24 options from trusted skincare brands to test out in our New York City lab. We then sent the face sunscreen out into the real world to try in everyday life to garner even more testing insights to help determine the overall winners.

In both series of tests, we factored in the feel, opacity, transferability, water resistance, and removal ease of each sunscreen, plus we used a moisture reader device in our lab to measure moisture levels. We tested the sunscreens in a real-world setting for two weeks where we wore the sun lotion for activities like working out, hiking, swimming, and running errands. The face sunscreens with the highest praise from both sets of tests were noted as having a silky formula that stayed on our face all day long without running while sweating or leaving a white cast finish.

Tips for Buying Face Sunscreen

Look for spf and uv protection.

Be sure to look at the label and choose sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as well as broad spectrum protection to ward off both UVA and UVB rays. If you end up wearing sunscreen for outdoor activities like swimming or running, you’ll also want to check the water or sweat resistance capabilities and reapply accordingly. It’s important to get a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection that defends against both UVA and UVB rays, so you’ll want to look for one that has the FDA seal of approval for broad-spectrum protection on the tube or label.

Choose the right formula for your skin type

Since face sunscreen can be worn daily, you should treat it as part of your everyday skincare routine and invest in a bottle that fits your needs. Those with oily or acne-prone skin may want to opt for a non-irritating mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. If you have dry skin, be sure to read the ingredients and look for moisturizing elements like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid.

Opt for reef-safe sunscreen when in the ocean

Going on a tropical vacation ? Before buying face sunscreen, you’ll want to do some research on your destination to find out which products might be banned in the state or country. For example, Hawaii, Palau, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all have bans on sunscreens that include ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, 4-methyl benzylidene camphor, Triclosan, parabens, nanoparticles, and microplastics.

It can be hard to gauge how much sunscreen to put on your face, so consider using the two-finger rule to apply an appropriate amount. Squeeze two lines of sunscreen from the tube onto both your index finger and middle finger before applying to ensure you’re using enough, then wait 15 minutes before going in the water or sweating to let it soak in.

Since sunscreen counts as a liquid, it can be packed in a carry-on as long as it falls at or below the 3.4-ounce liquid restrictions for going through the TSA security inspection at airports. If the bottle is larger than 3.4 ounces, it will need to be packed in checked luggage.

The Best Body Sunscreens, Tested & Reviewed by Our Editors

The best body sunscreen is the one you actually want to wear regularly—not just something you pull out for beach days. You may have already made applying a daily face sunscreen a key step in your skincare routine, but protecting the rest of your body—including your neck, chest, and hands—from the sun's harmful rays is just as important. Many sunscreens can leave your skin feeling greasy, oily, or irritated, but there are plenty of great SPF options on the market that are lightweight, hydrating, and gentle enough to wear everyday, whether you're running, hiking, swimming, or headed on a cross-country road trip (yes, harmful rays can get through your car window).

Our editors put dozens of top-selling body sunscreens to the test to see which ones are actually worth packing this summer. We wore these contenders to the beach, the hotel pool, the park, to work, and everywhere in between, all while keeping texture, dry time, blend, sweat- and water-resistance, packaging, and overall performance in mind. To help guide our search for the best body sunscreens, we asked Dr. Tomassian , a board-certified dermatologist, for his input on what to look for to stay protected from the sun. With his recommendations in mind, our editors have narrowed it down to the 10 best body sunscreens to wear on your next summer day outdoors.

What level of SPF should I wear?

When shopping for you new go-to sunblock, Dr. Tomassian recommends paying attention to the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) in your sunscreen. “This tells you how much sun exposure you can get before your skin will start to burn,” he says. “The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 for daily use, and I would agree. But, of course you should consider a higher SPF like 50 if you are going to be in constant sun.”

Dr. Tomassian also suggests ensuring your sunscreen has broad-spectrum coverage, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. “UVA rays are responsible for signs of aging and hyperpigmentation, while UVB rays tend to cause burns,” he says.

Are sunscreen lotions better than sprays?

Beach days are often synonymous with a good ol' sunscreen spray that smells like summer, but if you're not careful when applying these, they can lead to some streaky burns or tan lines. “Lotion sunscreens give you more control over how much you are applying to your body,” Dr. Tomassian says, “whereas aerosol sprays may not be as accurate. It’s often hard to determine if the product has gone elsewhere when spraying, especially if outdoors and it's windy.” But that's no reason to swear off sprays altogether if you prefer them—they do offer certain perks, like being easier to apply to your back and shoulders. “If using aerosols, try to apply in a non-windy area and apply six inches away from the skin,” says Dr. Tomassian.

How much sunscreen should I be wearing?

We asked the expert how often we should be wearing sunscreen. “You should be applying (and reapplying) sunscreen daily,” Dr. Tomassian says. “Re-application every two hours is standard, but if you are participating in activities like swimming or sweating, the more often, the better.” As far as how much we should be wearing: “For the whole body, one ounce is usually sufficient and for the face and neck I recommend the two finger-length method,” he says.

Supergoop! Play Spray

Tested by : Madison Flager , senior commerce editor Type of protection : Chemical Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 30 and 50 Stand-out features : Easy to apply, dries quickly, and feels weightless Why we recommend it : Supergoop consistently makes sunscreen that travelers, including our editors , actually want to incorporate into their daily routines. The Play Spray with Vitamin C is a favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager . “Last summer, I probably went through two of the larger six-ounce bottles between days at the beach, road trips, and weekend park hangs.” The lightweight spray doesn't leave a white cast, nor does it leave your skin feeling greasy or oily. It does have a slightly citrusy smell, but it's not overpowering and only adds to the list of reasons we love it. “As with any spray, it's important to apply it slowly and deliberately and rub it in to make sure you've fully covered your skin, and be sure to re-apply regularly—Supergoop recommends every 80 minutes with this one. I've found it holds up well and doesn't feel sticky even on long runs or hot beach days,” Flager says.

Elta MD UV Sport body sunscreen

Tested by : Rebecca Misner , senior features editor Type of protection : Mineral Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 50 Stand-out features : Unscented, no white cast, water-resistant for up to 80 minutes Why we recommend it : Senior features editor Rebecca Misner swears by EltaMD for sunscreen. The UV Sport mineral sunscreen is a great water-resistant option for active travelers, beachgoers, and swimmers alike. “One of my favorite things about this sunblock is that it doesn’t rinse off and it doesn’t drip into your eyes and sting the moment you dive into the water. With some allegedly water-resistant blocks, you can actually see them rinsing off into the swimming pool—that’s not the case with this,” Misner says. Formulated with vitamin E, this oil-free sunscreen's texture is medium-thick, offering plenty of hydration without leaving a white cast behind. “My skin feels moisturized but not at all greasy or sticky, which I hate, especially when I’m going to be outside in the sun; why start off feeling sweaty before you’ve left your house?” says Misner. She even used it on a hike in 90-degree weather and it held up beautifully. More pros: It is noncomedogenic and gentle enough for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Tested by : Meaghan Kenny , associate commerce editor Type of protection : Hybrid of chemical and mineral Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 30 Stand-out features : Designed for face and body, minimal white cast, safe for sensitive skin Why we recommend it : As a long-time wearer of CeraVe body products, including its popular Moisturizing Cream , it's no surprise the brand makes one of my favorite sunscreens. The Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen is a great all-in-one face and body lotion made with a unique hybrid formula of chemical and mineral sun protection. When you pour the product into your hand, it is pretty liquidy, making it easy to blend in and feeling practically weightless on the skin. It leaves a very slight white cast, which is typical for mineral sunscreens, but nothing noticeable enough to keep me from wanting to use it regularly. The best thing about this sunscreen is how gentle it is—it's safe enough for anyone with sensitive or acne-prone skin and never leaves my body feeling irritated, dry, or greasy. Packed with essential ceramides and niacinamide, CeraVe's skincare-forward sunscreen is just as pampering as it is protective. What we love most is that it's gentle enough to use on babies and kids, and can be worn on the face or body, making it one of the most versatile and packable options on our list. “It does leave a faint white cast (hard to avoid when it comes to mineral sunscreens), but is quite easy to blend in,” Traveler editor Hannah Towey says. “It glides on smoothly and is not overly greasy or oily, unlike other natural sunscreen products I’ve tried.” Water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, it will be a staple in Towey’s beach bag all summer long.

Exactly How Much Sunscreen You Should Use On Your Face

Plus, how to reapply without messing up your makeup.

how much sunscreen to apply to your face

Sunscreen is so important that dermatologists want you to stash a tube somewhere conspicuous so that using it becomes habit ( one study , for example, found that putting sunscreen next to your toothpaste increased usage). “A sunscreen that has at least an SPF of 30 should be applied to the face, ears, neck, and hands every morning—rain or shine, winter or summer—and reapplied after two hours, even if you’re just sitting near a window inside or walking around casually outdoors,” says Shari Marchbein, MD , an assistant professor of clinical dermatology at New York University School of Medicine.

But here’s the thing. As critical as sunscreen is, it’s not foolproof. You have to use it correctly to enjoy its protective benefits. That includes knowing how much to apply—and you may be surprised to learn that you’re not using enough. So, in an effort to empower you with some SPF know-how, we tapped top dermatologists to create a helpful guide that breaks down what sunscreen is, how it works, how to choose the right formula for your skin type, and, most important, how much you really need to be slathering on every day.

Read on to keep your skin healthy and protected—all year long.

What Is The Best Way To Reapply Sunscreen?

What exactly does spf mean, are there sunscreen ingredients i should avoid, does sunscreen expire.

a group of small yellow lights

Exactly How Much Sunscreen You Should Apply To Your Face

Dermatologists recommend wearing a SPF 30 or higher every day to prevent premature aging and skin cancers. But did you know that there’s a specific amount you must use to get that SPF 30 protection? Probably not, since the directions on most tubes and bottles merely suggest applying liberally or generously . (Even though sunscreen is regulated like a drug in the U.S., brands are not required to provide consumers with specific information about proper application.)

Slide To See The Right Amount

To label a product as an SPF 30, for example, a company must test the formula in a very specific way, which involves spreading a certain amount of sunscreen over a certain size area over a certain amount of time, explains Anthony Rossi, MD , a dermatologist at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center who specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery—a method that removes skin cancer while keeping healthy tissue safe.

But the truth is, “in real-world settings, people aren’t applying as much as they should,” says Marisa Garshick, MD , a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. In fact, real-world application habits reduce the SPF, or sun protection factor, by as much as half, according to research . It’s also important to note that the number on the bottle “is predicated on a person reapplying the same amount every two hours,” Dr. Rossi adds.

This Is How Much Cream You Need

Image no longer available

However, science-backed guidelines do exist to help you achieve the SPF number listed on the label—even if they’re not in plain sight. In this study, researchers divided the body into 11 areas, each representing approximately 9 percent of your total surface area, and found that the correct amount is two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. For the face, head, and neck, that amount is equivalent to squeezing a strip of sunscreen onto the index finger and another onto the middle finger, from fingertip to base, or using a quarter-sized dollop. And remember: Don’t forget your ears and around your hairline. “These areas tend to be missed and can easily burn,” Dr. Rossi says.

The Best Way To Apply Stick Formulas

Image no longer available

Some formulas, like creams, make dosage easier. But it can be tough to gauge the exact amount you’re using if you opt for one of the newer spritz-on face sunscreens, which is why many of our experts don’t recommend using them as your primary source of protection. However, if you hold the bottle two to three inches from your skin and spray on a thick layer that creates a whitish film, sprays can provide decent coverage, Dr. Marchbein says. As for stick sunscreens , Dr. Garshick recommends four passes back and forth on each area of the face (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, and neck). Then rub it in for even coverage.

Bottom line: You have to be intentional with how you use sunscreen in order to reap the full benefits.

Why do I have to wear sunscreen every day? Even though UV rays vary depending on the time of the day, the season, the altitude, and other factors (the UV Index measures this), they’re assaulting your skin year-round. “They can even pass through clouds and window glass,” Dr. Rossi says. And all the incidental exposure from running errands or driving to work adds up over time, which is why dermatologists are so emphatic about the importance of daily SPF use.

The ingredients in sunscreen naturally break down or rub off over time, rendering the product less effective as the minutes tick by. “Sweating, swimming, or showering can also wash away sunscreen,” Dr. Garshick explains. That’s why the amount of sunscreen described above must be reapplied every two hours to retain its efficacy. NBD during a day at the beach or pool, but what about those times when you’ve put on a full face of makeup after your first coat of SPF? TikTok has an interesting solution, which involves dispensing sunscreen onto a beauty sponge and dabbing it onto your face. We tried the hack, and it truly does work like a charm. And the dermatologists we spoke with agree it’s a good solve for a common problem.

Smart Strategies For Reapplication

Image no longer available

Dr. Marchbein also recommends brush-on powder SPFs for over-makeup touch-ups. To ensure you’re getting enough coverage, apply a brush for 15 seconds to each quadrant of your face. And Dr. Garshick also finds sunscreen sticks and sprays to be helpful when it comes to reapplication over makeup. “Although they may not give you the same coverage as a lotion or a cream, sticks and sprays are better than nothing and can be a good option for someone who otherwise wouldn’t reapply her SPF over makeup,” she says.

And keep in mind that sunscreen can’t be your everything :“It is important to incorporate other sun-protective measures, including seeking shade when possible, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and wearing sunglasses,” says Dr. Garshick.

What Is Sunscreen (And How Does It Work)?

So, now that you know how much sunscreen to apply, let’s back up and cover the basics. The simplest way to describe what sunscreen is would be to say that sunscreen products use specific FDA-approved ingredients to shield skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) light generated by the sun’s rays. These rays emit the UV radiation that is responsible for 80 to 90 percent of skin cancers , with UVA and UVB being the two types that can damage skin. UVB is primarily responsible for sunburns, while UVA inflicts premature aging. “Historically, UVB was thought to burn and UVA was thought to age. However, we know that both contribute to skin cancer and aging,” Dr. Rossi says.

Sunscreens typically fall into two categories: mineral or chemical (though some hybrid formulas are a mix of both). Physical or mineral sunscreens contain particles of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or a mixture of both, which sit on the surface of the skin and create a physical barrier against UV light. Because they’re not absorbed by the skin and unlikely to cause irritation, mineral formulas are recommended for sensitive skin and are considered safe and effective by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

mineral vs chemical sunscreen chart

In the past, mineral formulas had a thick texture and chalky finish—not exactly a pleasant user experience. But Dr. Garshick notes that newer formulations absorb easily without leaving a white cast behind. “Personally, I think the best sunscreens for face are tinted mineral sunscreens,” says Dr. Marchbein. The tint comes from iron oxides, which impart a pigment to the SPF but also give an added benefit of blue-light protection, since broad-spectrum, nontinted sunscreen only protects against UVA and UVB rays, she says.

When should I apply sunscreen—before or after moisturizer? Sunscreen should be applied as a last step in a morning skin-care routine and prior to makeup. “While some makeup may contain SPF, it’s likely not providing adequate protection,” Dr. Garshick says. In other words, a dab of tinted moisturizer won’t cut it. Start with the appropriate serving of daily SPF 30 and treat makeup with SPF as a backup only.

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays before they penetrate skin. They contain organic filters such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate, and they often boast sheer and lightweight textures. However, they aren’t as well tolerated as mineral formulas. “The chemical filters are more common culprits of irritation,” Dr. Rossi says.

Chemical sunscreens have also come under scrutiny over the past few years due to concerns that their ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream via skin. In fact, 12 filters are under active review for safety by the FDA, but Dr. Garshick doesn’t see this as cause for alarm. Remember: Just because there is some evidence of absorption doesn’t mean any of these ingredients have been linked to any adverse health effects. “To me, it’s really about personal choice and your comfort level,” she says. “There is no conclusive data at this time that any sunscreen ingredients—mineral or chemical—need to be avoided. But if you’re worried, we have sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that have been classified as GRASE—generally recognized as safe and effective—by the FDA.”

But the best sunscreen is one you’ll actually wear, so find a formula you like and use it religiously.

a group of small yellow lights

The terms SPF and sunscreen are often used interchangeably, but the former is actually shorthand for “sun protection factor,” referring to the level of UVB protection in a formula. “Basically, this is a measure of the time it takes to redden the skin when wearing sunscreen compared to the amount of time required to develop a sunburn without wearing sunscreen,” Dr. Garshick says. Another way to think of it: SPF is a measure of protection from solar exposure that takes time and solar intensity into consideration. The number is not necessarily related to an amount of time for which you’re covered. An SPF of 30 can provide 97 percent UVB protection. But remember: “This is predicated on applying a thick and even coat of sun protection on the skin and reapplying every two hours,” says Dr. Rossi.

How To Read A Sunscreen Label

timeline

Derms recommend SPF 30 or higher for daily use. However, if you have a history of skin cancer or are going to the Bahamas or skiing in Vermont, you may want to consider an SPF 50. And it’s important to note that “the SPF number only refers to the amount of protection against UVB radiation, the type of UV rays most responsible for developing a sunburn,” Dr. Garshick says. “It is not a measure of UVA protection.” That’s why, in addition to one that has an SPF of 30, look for a sunscreen labeled as broad-spectrum, which means it shields skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

“Sunscreens are very safe to use and have been shown to prevent skin cancer and skin aging. However, there are certain ingredients you may want to steer clear of,” Dr. Rossi says. “Some chemical filters such as oxybenzone and benzophenone-3 may cause a photo allergy, which is when a chemical interacts with UV on the skin and causes a reaction.”

That said, a skin type–centric approach to sunscreen shopping is always best. A few things to keep in mind if you’re…

  • Acne-Prone : “It’s important to look for a product that is noncomedogenic and won’t clog the pores,” Dr. Garshick says. Oil-free, mattifying formulas are typically a good choice when your skin produces excess oil.
  • Sensitive : “For those with sensitive skin, it’s best to opt for a mineral sunscreen, as this is less likely to cause sensitivity or irritation,” Dr. Garshick says.
  • Dark Skin : For melanin-rich skin tones, certain sunscreens are known to leave a white film on the skin. A chemical sunscreen may be less likely to do so, and a tinted mineral formula can also blend easily into skin, says Dr. Garshick.
  • Mature Skin : Look for hydrating formulas with ceramides, vitamin E, and niacinamide.

In a word, yes. “Some sunscreens will have an expiration date listed on the package, but in general, sunscreens are required by the FDA to remain effective for three years,” says Dr. Garshick. So, when you buy your next sunscreen, if you don’t see an expiration date on the label, write the date of purchase on the product so you can use that as a guide, she suggests. If you’re still unsure, trust your instincts. Any change in color or consistency are signs it’s gone bad, says Dr. Marchbein. If you wear SPF every day, you’ll use it up well before that happens, and proper storage can ensure it stays safe and effective. “Heat and humidity accelerate the breakdown of sunscreen, so be sure to keep it at cooler or room temperatures. Your car is not ideal,” adds Dr. Marchbein.

5 New Sunscreens We Love

Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50

Glossier Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50

This completely invisible formula (read: it's totally clear) can easily be used as a makeup primer—it leaves skin feeling velvet-y and matte so foundation glides right on. In addition to a blend of chemical UV filters, it contains rice photo-compounds to protect skin from free radical damage and aloe leaf juice to quench dryness. Don't leave home without it.

Bright Reveal Broad Spectrum SPF 50 + Antioxidants

L'Oreal Paris Bright Reveal Broad Spectrum SPF 50 + Antioxidants

A cream-fluid hybrid that's easy to love, L'Oreal's new sunscreen protects with broad spectrum chemical filters and helps to improve the appearance of pesky discoloration with vitamins C and E. You'll be impressed by how hydrating it is—and the fact that it won't leave a white cast on even the darkest skin.

Daily Invisible Gel Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen

Bask Daily Invisible Gel Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen

This sun season, clear is where it's at: Bask's offering features chemical UV filters and also smooths on without a trace. On skin, it feels like heaven on skin thanks to a hefty dose of moisturizing squalene. Plus, this one is water- and sweat-resistant for up to eighty minutes—perfect for active wearers.

Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 45

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 45

If you have dry skin, this is the SPF for you. Infused with a 30% hyaluronic acid complex and an ingredient called Pentavitin, it provides up to 72-hours of hydration to your complexion. The mix of chemical filters protects against UV damage and the sheer universal tint means there'll be no white cast left behind.

Banana Bright Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 30

OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 30

Here's an all-mineral sunscreen we can really get behind. From Olehenriksen's famed Banana Bright line, it shields skin with 16.3% zinc oxide plus vitamin C and niacinamide to brighten your complexion, even skin tone, and defend against damaging free radicals. The universal tint means there won't be a hint of a white cast (we used it on the model's in our story and it looked seamless).

Are You Applying Enough Sunscreen? A Dermatologist Weighs In

You need to wear more sunscreen than you think.

sunscreen travel size

Most people apply less than half of the recommended amount of sunscreen.

Sunscreen is an essential step in every skincare routine. It wards off sun damage , reduces the risk of skin cancer  and prevents dark spots and wrinkles. Even if you're already in the habit of lathering up before you head outside, listen up: You probably need to slather on even more.

We should all wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 , since anyone is at risk for getting skin cancer. But SPF 30 or higher is your safest bet for stronger protection. Sunscreen application isn't a one-and-done scenario, either. You should reapply sunscreen regularly, at least every 2 hours, and more frequently if you're sweating a lot or swimming.

But is it enough to apply a small dab of sunscreen, or should you slather a handful on? And what should you do if you use products like makeup or moisturizers that already have an SPF rating? Keep reading for more guidance from dermatologist  Dr. Caren Campbell .

Read more: Best Sunscreen

How to apply an adequate amount of sunscreen

For starters, Campbell says that most people aren't applying nearly enough sunscreen. " Studies show that most people only apply 25 to 50% of [the] recommended amount of sunscreen," says Campbell. And if you don't apply enough, you may not be getting the amount of protection that's listed on the label.

The amount that Campbell recommends for the average adult is "1 ounce of sunscreen, which is the size of a shot glass," she says. She prefers a liquid sunscreen over a spray, even though they can be convenient. "Spray sunscreens are always going to fall at the bottom of our list, as they're difficult to ensure good coverage on the exposed areas of the body," says Campbell.

If you have a hard time envisioning what 1 ounce looks like, esthetician and influencer Tiara Willis popularized the "two-finger rule," which says that you should apply two fingers' worth of sunscreen.

When you apply your sunscreen, don't forget to apply to those often forgotten areas, like your ears, the tops of your feet, head (including the scalp) and neck. "Some of the most aggressive skin cancers occur on your temples, ears and lips oftentimes because those are areas of the body that stick out and get more sun, but also because we forget to lather them in sunscreen," Campbell says.

Smear of sunscreen

Some skincare and makeup products contain SPF, but Campbell says you should still wear sunscreen.

If my makeup/moisturizer/serum is SPF-rated, do I still need to wear sunscreen?

Campbell says this is one of the most common mistakes she sees patients make with their sun protection: You can't assume that the (typically small) level of SPF that's provided by your makeup or skincare is enough protection. "Most of my new patients come in using moisturizers with sunscreen or makeup that contains sunscreen and for them, they think this is sufficient -- and it's not," says Campbell. You'll still need to apply a good facial sunscreen in addition to whatever is in your makeup or other products for best results, since many of these products are not SPF 30 or higher or they don't provide broad spectrum protection, according to Campbell.

"Most sunscreen in makeup and moisturizer is chemical sunscreen, which doesn't work as well or have as complete protection from harmful UV rays as mineral sunscreens, which are physical blocking sunscreens," says Campbell. Mineral sunscreens work by reflecting the sun off of the skin, rather than absorbing UV rays, which chemical sunscreens do. Campbell recommends mineral sunscreens over chemical because she says they are more effective: "You can also reapply dry sunscreen or powder sunscreen over makeup as you need to reapply every two hours or if you sweat."

When to apply sunscreen

You have to apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you head out into the sun. "Especially with chemical sunscreens, these need to be applied 15 minutes prior to going outside as they need time to start working," Campbell says. "You need to reapply every 2 hours or if you sweat or swim."

Keep in mind that even if you use "waterproof" or "water-resistant" sunscreen, you still need to reapply after you've been in the water. "Waterproof is no longer a thing -- it's water- resistant , so when you get out of the pool, reapply," says Campbell.

It never hurts to layer your sunscreen -- even if that means adding extra pieces like hats, clothing, or anything else that shields you from the sun's rays. "SPF clothing, hats, sunglasses, beach umbrellas -- all these things help especially when we are sweating and swimming," Campbell says.

For more sunscreen tips, here's the ideal SPF you should be using this summer, according to experts . Here's when sunscreen expires and whether it's still safe to use . Plus, check out the best facial sunscreens for 2024 .

The Unsettling Reason It Really Is Best To Wear Sunscreen While Traveling By Plane

passenger airplane bright window

From ignoring liquid rules to leaving headphones at home, there are tons of rookie mistakes first-time fliers should try to avoid. Then, there are less obvious mistakes that might even be overlooked by the most seasoned travelers. One such blunder is not wearing sunscreen, and the reason may surprise you.

According to research by Mirce Akademy (via Iris Publishers ), UV radiation is twice as strong at 30,000 feet (standard altitude of commercial airplanes) than on the ground. In other words, your skin may be more vulnerable to sun damage during a flight. Yup, the window seat on a plane isn't as great as you think. As it turns out, airplane windshields do not provide full protection from UVA rays. More so, past research points to a shocking similarity between tanning beds and cockpits. Long story short: Protect your skin with sunscreen when flying. As you've probably guessed, close that window seat shade when you can, too.

The intensity of UVA transmission on airplanes

In a 2014 study, The Journal of the American Medical Association examined melanoma risks for pilots and cabin crew. Research findings concluded that when flying for just under an hour, pilots are exposed to the same levels of UVA radiation emitted in a 20-minute tanning bed session. Talking to The Points Guy , dermatologist Cherise Mizrahi-Levi explained, "While there is negligible transmission of UVB rays through plastic and glass windshields, UVA transmission through these windows is significant." Unprotected exposure to UVA rays can lead to permanent skin damage.

Due to less airplane time and smaller windows, passengers face lower risks of skin damage than pilots. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't take preventative measures on flights. Mizrahi-Levi advised travelers to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB protection) that's at least SPF 30. "As a general rule of thumb, you should apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours during UV exposure," they shared.

Optimal skincare products for flights

Flying can be rough on the skin for numerous reasons. Dermatologist Geeta Yadav told W Mag , "When you combine the high altitude, increased UV exposure, and recirculated air of an airplane, it can be a recipe for complexion disaster." Plus, low airplane humidity may leave your skin dry and sensitive. So, what are the best ways to protect your skin when flying?

In addition to applying sunscreen, Yadav recommends using biocellulose sheet masks for hydration. With key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and sodium PCA, serums and moisturizers could be your best friends. Yadav explained, "These will draw water from the air and seal it into the skin."

Cabin crew members concur that proper skin care is crucial on airplanes. Former flight attendant Beth Windsor told Business Insider , "Having spent years battling the effects flying has had on my skin, I always give myself a mini facial on long-haul flights. I use an intense hydration sheet mask and under-eye gel patches then apply my moisturizer and SPF 50." Windsor doesn't neglect her routine before shorter flights, as she applies moisturizer, vitamin C serum, and SPF. As far as post-flight skin care, you should also avoid taking a hot shower.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
