Arrival Day in Kigali, Rwand, for your 3-Day Luxury Gorilla Habituation Experience Safari:

To ensure a seamless journey, we can arrange a pickup for you directly at Kigali Airport and accommodate you for a night at one of the luxurious hotels in the city. You have a range of exceptional choices, including Serena Hotel, Radisson Hotel, Marriott Hotel, des Mille Collines Hotel (Hotel Rwanda), and others. Rest assured that these accommodations will provide your stay with the utmost comfort and sophistication.

Suppose your arrival in Kigali is early in the day. In that case, we can meet you at the airport and proceed directly to the captivating Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, minimizing unnecessary delays and maximizing your time in the wilderness.

While neither Rwanda nor Uganda requires a Yellow Fever vaccination, it’s important to note that Uganda is part of the Yellow Fever Belt that extends across various countries globally. To facilitate your travel between Rwanda and Uganda, we can assist you in obtaining the East African Visa upon arrival at Kigali Airport. It’s essential to specifically request this visa, as it grants you the convenience to exit Rwanda, enter Uganda, and subsequently reenter Rwanda for your departure flight.

Fly-In Safari: This 3-Day Luxury Gorilla Habituation Experience Safari can be done as a fly-in safari from Entebbe.

Day 1 – Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:

You will need a visa for entry into Uganda, which costs $50. Alternatively, you can opt for the East African Visa, priced at $100, which covers access to Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. It is essential to obtain these visas online before your trip. Also, please ensure that you possess a valid Yellow Fever certificate, as it is required for entry into Uganda.

Typically, the border crossing process takes 30 to 45 minutes, and Rwandan and Ugandan officials strive to facilitate a smooth tourist experience. Any minor inconveniences at the border quickly fade away as you embark on the journey to the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

Please note that if you were to travel from Entebbe or Kampala, the journey to Mgahinga Gorilla Park would take approximately nine to ten hours. However, starting from Kigali, you benefit from a shorter drive time, allowing you to maximize your time in the enchanting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Four Gorillas Lodge

Day 2 – Gorilla Habituation Experience – Rushaga:

Have an early breakfast, and take your packed lunch from the Lodge for Gorilla Trekking Gear. Having the right gear and wearing the right clothes and boots make a difference in the quality of a Trek that you will have.

What Should I Wear for the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

Here is practical advice about what to wear during the Uganda Gorilla Habituation Experience. Often, Trekkers are not dressed right for the occasion, which can spoil your day, and your focus might not be on the Gorillas but on personal discomfort and misery. Wearing suitable clothing and footwear is about protection.

• Daypack: A waterproof daypack is preferred; you can use it as a carry-on when flying to Uganda. Pack all essentials inside the daypack.
• Hiking Boots: Make sure that they have good treads on them. You will need ankle support, something boots give you and give you reactions on muddy trails. Have a good pair of Merino wool socks.
• Long Trouser:  They will protect you from nettles and thorns. Tuck the trousers into your socks for added protection from ants.
• Long-Sleeved Shirt: Neutral in color. Again, this is for your comfort and protection.
• Rain Jacket or Poncho:  Pack into your daypack. You never know when it will train. You are in an Afro-montane Rainforest.

• Wide Brimmed Hat:  It gives you protection from the Sun.
• Facial Mask: You must wear a facial mask in the presence of the gorillas and your and their protection.
• Camera Equipment – Binoculars: Ensure extra batteries and storage devices. Put them into Ziploc bags. Binoculars are not needed if you are not a birder.
• Packed Lunch and Bottled Water: You will need your lunch from the Lodge and two liters of Water.
• Insect Repellent – Sun Lotion – Sunglasses:  We recommend the effective Australian RID Insect Repellent . Good Sun blocker cream and sunglasses.
• You will need a Porter and Walking Stick: The services of a porter free you on the often-difficult trail, and a local walking stick helps you and steadies you on the often-challenging path. We supply our clients with both.

The gorilla habituation experience begins with an orientation where you are told how to conduct yourself on the Trek. This is an all-day trek that includes four hours with a gorilla family. The whole tour can last up to eight hours. Usually, the walk is over in the late afternoon.

For many, being in the living room of a gorilla family is an almost spiritual experience. It is an experience that will leave lasting memories and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You are a participant in the habituation process. There is a maximum of four participants, plus rangers and porters. The Gorilla Habituation Experience is perfect for photographers since you have maximum time to get some great photos.

You will learn a lot about the habits and ways of the Gorillas. We suggest that you know before you go. Understand what is involved, get the right gear for the day, and more.

Please return to the trailhead, and it is back to the Lodge.

Private Gorilla Habituation Experience Trek s can be arranged but typically must be done well in Advance and at a higher cost. The Trekking Party would still include Rangers, Porters, and Security Detail, but no other tour participants.

Day 3- Return to Kigali:

The Trek will be over by noon, and as we cross the border into Rwanda, we gain one hour since Rwanda is on Central African Time and is one hour ahead of Uganda.

The 3-Day Luxury Gorilla Habituation Experience Safari comes to an end. The activities on this day depend on your flight time out of Kigali International Airport, Rwanda, and we will fine-tune it to fit you. On the return to Kigali, you gain one hour as you cross the border from the East African Time Zone to the Central one.

Drop off at the airport 3 hours before your flight ends your 3-Day Gorilla Habituation Experience. We can arrange a Hotel for you in Kigali.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are the two profound Gorila trekking national parks in Uganda where visitors can go gorilla trekking. Hence, you can choose to go gorilla trekking in any of the two parks, or you can choose to visit both parks for a more comprehensive experience.

The best place to see gorillas in Uganda is found in the Bwindi Forest, which is split between the districts of Kabale and Rubanda. The Gorilla National Park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Nkuringo and Rushaga districts in the south.

While you can equally go gorilla trekking in Rwanda & Congo, It is estimated that the Bwindi Gorilla National Park is home to over 50 percent of the world’s total gorilla population. Several gorilla families, each with its own distinct personality traits, can be found in each gorilla sector.

Rwanda’s World Heritage site, the Albertine Rift is one Africa’s most biodiverse regions. The Virungas massif is a staggeringly beautiful rainforest home to half the population of the world’s Mountain Gorillas, an iconic endangered species. With surrounding views of the volcanic peaks, only a handful of travelers are permitted to trek into the wilderness to seek out habituated groups of Gorilla families, about 604 individuals, amongst other primate species accompanied by our experienced local rangers who are residents and accredited guides exclusively employed by the Volcanoes National Park. What the Trip is Like

Gorilla tracking will occasionally feel strenuous as we hike uphill to follow the clans, but we will take breaks along the way. The shape you're in will be an important factor in your enjoyment of these hikes. Make an effort to get in good physical condition with hiking, biking, running, or other kinds of exercise beyond your normal routine. A brisk 30-45 minute walk every other day over moderately steep terrain can do wonders for your conditioning.

The climate in Uganda is considered “modified tropical”—similar to the equatorial climate of other East African countries like Kenya and Tanzania, but slightly modified by its altitude, which ranges from 3,500 to 4,500 feet. Daytime temperatures are usually in the 70s and 80s, and humidity is fairly high. You can expect to experience some rain during the course of the trip. Like Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda has two annual rainy seasons, one between March and May and one between October and November.

June, July and August During these months, the country is refreshingly green and the weather is coolest, especially in the higher altitudes, with a high of 70° to 80°F and a low of 40°. Riding in the safari vehicle can be chilly some mornings, but the temperature usually warms up by 10:00 am.

September, October, and November These are delightful times to visit Uganda and can be compared to springtime in the US. The jacaranda and other trees are bursting into blossom and the days are warmer. The high temperatures are 75° to 85°F, with a low of 65°. Scattered rains occur in November and early December. These “short rains” just freshen the country and lay the dust, although they can sometimes be heavy.

December to March These are Uganda's “summer” months. The temperature range is from 80° to 90°F during the day (coastal areas are hotter and can range from 80° to 100°). The evenings range from 50° to 60°.

April and May The rainy season (the “long rains”) occur during these months.

Our accommodations will be in comfortable hotels, safari lodges, and tented camps with spacious tents equipped with en suite facilities.

During game drives in our 4WD vehicles, we guarantee window seating for all -- there's no taking turns on who gets the window seats. We use five- or seven-passenger Nissan safari vehicles (never minibuses!), and all vehicles have roof hatches for easy wildlife viewing and photography. A cooler of drinks and refreshments is carried aboard. And our 4WD vehicles can go virtually anywhere, an important feature when we're tracking game. Please note there are some long driving days over rough roads and dusty dirt tracks.

During drives and walks, we can at times get quite close to wild animals. Being very quiet improves everybody's chances of observation. In the interest of safety, your Trip Leader explains limitations on movement while on game drives, in the safari vehicles, and around camp. Specific guidelines are in effect for the viewing of chimpanzees and gorillas—both for their protection and for your own. Incidents with wild animals are extremely rare on safaris, but no trip can guarantee immunity from such incidents. Wilderness Travel is not to be held responsible for incidents involving the behavior of wildlife.

Wildlife Viewing

In Uganda, the wildlife is truly wild. Unlike some of the Kenya and Tanzania game parks, the wildlife here has not been exposed to a great number of humans. Except when viewed from the launch trips on the rivers, Uganda's wildlife has a healthy, natural shyness of our vehicles. Here we have an opportunity to observe natural behavior. Binoculars are strongly recommended for observing animals as well as birds. They will also be helpful for observing chimpanzees and monkeys who spend much of their time high up in trees. We recommend 10-power if you are interested in seeing and identifying smaller birds.

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda is home to half of the endangered mountain gorillas. Through a ground-breaking partnership between locals, national parks, and tourists who travel to see them, the ape population is growing. One of Africa’s most unique and amazing experiences is gorilla trekking: encountering wild gorillas in their natural habitat, free from fences or other human interference other than mild acclimatization to human presence in the forest.

With exotic migratory and numerous permanent species, Uganda is also a well-liked location for birdwatchers. The best chimpanzee-human interactions in Africa can be found in Kibale Forest, Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks offer unique combo safaris featuring big game and large primates.

Rwanda is Africa’s most accessible gorilla trekking destination.

Rwanda outperforms itself when it comes to an East African tour. Fly into Kigali and in a few hours you’ll be in the lush Volcanoes National Park, the jungle home to many mountain gorilla families.
