Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Find out more about inadmissibility .

Sri Lanka travel advice

Latest updates: Risk level(s) – removed economic crisis information; Safety and security – updated information on the current economic situation

Last updated: May 17, 2024 11:55 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, sri lanka - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Sri Lanka due to demonstrations, the threat of terrorist attacks and crime.

Current economic situation

Sri Lanka is experiencing economic difficulties which may result in limited availability of resources, including basic necessities like medicines, fuel and specific food items. Power outages, though infrequent, may occur.

The economic situation may also impact public services, including healthcare.

If you are in Sri Lanka:

  • keep supplies of food, water and fuel in case of lengthy disruptions
  • make sure to have sufficient supply of any required medicines on hand as availability may be limited
  • avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • follow the instructions of local authorities

Demonstrations and civil unrest

Demonstrations occur frequently in Colombo, and occasionally elsewhere in the country. Security forces may use tear gas and water cannons during violent protests. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

More about mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Security forces

The Sri Lankan military continues to maintain a strong presence in the country’s North and East, including the Jaffna Peninsula. Military and police checkpoints can be established and road closures can occur suddenly.

Security forces have wide-ranging powers, including the authority to:

  • impose curfews
  • detain without charge for extended periods
  • search individuals, vehicles, residences and commercial premises

Individuals of Sri Lankan heritage, including those who don’t have Sri Lankan citizenship, have been detained on occasion by police or security forces.

  • Always carry formal photographic identification with you
  • Keep an eye out for signage warning of military or demining zones
  • Keep to well-traveled roads
  • Avoid venturing in forested areas or abandoned properties
  • Monitor local news for latest updates
  • If you’re detained, ask the authorities to contact the High Commission of Canada

There is a threat of terrorism. Past attacks have resulted in fatalities.

Further attacks can’t be ruled out. Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Violent crime occurs, including harassment and assault aimed at Western foreigners.

Petty crime such as purse snatching and pickpocketing is common, especially on public transportation. Theft has occurred in hotels and guesthouses.

Credit card fraud is common. Pay very close attention to your credit card when it is being handled. To minimize risks, you should opt to pay in cash whenever possible.

Ensure that your personal belongings, including passports and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

Inter-communal tensions

Inter-communal and religious tensions exist throughout the country and have led to violence. Further violent incidents could occur.

Spiked food and drinks

Foreigners have been targeted in incidents of drink spiking, often combined with sexual assault or theft. Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Women’s safety

Women are often the target for unwanted attention. They should exercise caution when travelling alone.

Advice for women travellers

Swimming conditions may be unsafe. Follow the advice and warnings of local authorities.

Water safety abroad

Tourist facilities

Tourist facilities are widely available but quality varies, especially inland. You should arrange travel to remote areas through a reputable travel agency.

Road safety

Road conditions are usually poor outside major cities.

Road accidents, often causing death and injuries, are common due to poorly maintained vehicles, erratic driving practices and pedestrians and roaming animals on the road.

Roads may be closed on short notice.

Public transportation

Travel by bus is generally unsafe due to aggressive drivers and the risk of theft.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

Information about foreign domestic airlines

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

We have obtained the information on this page from the Sri Lankan authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the  Foreign Representatives in Canada .

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you use for travel.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Sri Lanka.

Passport for official travel

Different entry rules may apply.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024
  • Dengue: Advice for travellers - 6 May, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Travellers going to countries in South Asia should speak to a health care professional about getting vaccinated.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Medical services and facilities do not meet the standards you might normally expect in Canada.

Medical facilities in certain areas outside of Colombo are limited, particularly in the north. In the event of a major accident or illness, medical evacuation is often necessary. Medical transport is very expensive.

Medical facilities may require confirmation of insurance coverage, guarantee of payment or an up-front deposit before admitting patients.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Sri Lanka.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Sri Lanka, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Sri Lankan court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Sri Lanka to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

IMPORTANT: The two levels below are official Government of Canada Travel Advisories and are issued when the safety and security of Canadians travelling or living in the country or region may be at risk.

  Avoid non-essential travel

Your safety and security could be at risk. You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region based on family or business requirements, knowledge of or familiarity with the region, and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving.

Sri Lanka ETA

Sri Lanka visa requirements for Canadian citizens

Apply for sri lanka eta from canada.

Apply for eTA from Canada

Sri Lanka receives visitors for tourism, business, and transit purposes from all over the world, and citizens of many countries, including Canada, can now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation, for entry to Sri Lanka prior to their trip.

The Sri Lanka ETA for Canadian citizens allows eligible Canadian passport holders to enter Sri Lanka quickly and easily with the appropriate Electronic Travel Authorization type for their trip.

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka from Canada?

All visitors to Sri Lanka from Canada must obtain a Sri Lanka visa for Canadian citizens . Individuals intending to live or work in Sri Lanka are not eligible for a Sri Lankan ETA for Canadian citizens and must apply for a traditional visa at a Sri Lankan embassy or consulate.

Travellers who are visiting Sri Lanka temporarily, however, can apply for an ETA under the following 3 categories :

  • Sri Lanka eTA for tourism
  • Sri Lanka eTA for business purposes
  • Sri Lanka eTA for transit

The tourist ETA for Sri Lanka allows Canadian citizens to enter the country for up to 30 days for the purposes of vacation, visiting family, medical treatment, or participation in cultural, sporting, etc. events.

The business ETA for Sri Lanka also permits Canadians to visit Sri Lanka for a maximum of 30 days , this time to participate in business activities such as meetings, negotiations, workshops, training etc.

Both the tourist and business ETA are extendable from inside Sri Lanka for a maximum of 6 months, provided the Sri Lanka visa from Canada does not expire first.

The Sri Lanka transit ETA permits travellers entry into Sri Lanka for up to 2 days for the purposes of onward travel to another country. Visitors should note that transit passengers who will be in Sri Lanka for less than 8 hours, who have proof of onward travel, and who do not leave the airport transit area during their stay do not require a Sri Lanka visa for Canadian citizens.

Travellers are advised that individuals with dual Sri Lankan/Canadian citizenship or individuals under 21, born abroad to Sri Lankan parents and whose birth has been registered in Sri Lanka, do not need to apply for a Sri Lanka visa from Canada.

How long does it take for Canadians to get a Sri Lankan ETA?

Because the application for the Sri Lankan ETA for Canadian citizens can be completed online, the entire application process is shorter than for a traditional visa .

Once the online form has been filled in and submitted, which normally takes only a few minutes, the application is usually processed within minutes or hours.

Standard processing delivers the approved authorisation in 1 to 2 business days. There is also a Priority Service that allows Canadian visitors to get their ETA within 1 hour .

However, since delays can occasionally occur, travellers from Canada are recommended to apply for their online Sri Lanka visa for Canadian Citizens at least 2 business days before their intended date of departure for Sri Lanka.

Once the Sri Lanka ETA for Canadian citizens has been processed and approved, the ETA document is delivered electronically to the applicant via email. This eliminates the need for travellers to wait in lengthy queues at their Sri Lankan port of entry to apply for a visa on arrival . It also makes the process much quicker than applying for a traditional visa at a Sri Lankan consulate or embassy.

How do I apply for a Sri Lanka visa from Canada?

Sri Lankan visa requirements for Canadian citizens state that in order to obtain an ETA for Sri Lanka, Canadian citizens must be in possession of the following items :

  • A Canadian passport which will remain valid for no less than 6 months following the holder’s entry into Sri Lanka
  • A functioning email address (to receive the ETA)
  • A working debit/credit card (to pay the application processing fee)

Applicants who have all of these items may then fill out the online Sri Lanka ETA application form . This form will ask for the following information:

  • Personal details (name, address, date of birth, country of birth, etc.)
  • Passport details (number, date of issue, expiry date)
  • Travel itinerary (accommodation reservations, etc.)

The form will also ask visitors to select their desired type of Sri Lanka ETA for Canadian citizens (tourist, business, or transit).

When applying for the Sri Lanka visa from Canada online, travellers should verify that all the information they provide is correct, as errors on their application may cause processing delays or rejection .

How to enter Sri Lanka from Canada with an ETA

Once the Sri Lankan ETA for Canadian citizens has been received electronically, it should be printed for presentation at the port of entry into Sri Lanka .

Canadian visitors to Sri Lanka should also be able to present the following documents when entering the country:

  • Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of their stay
  • Proof of a return trip to Canada or an onward journey to a third country, plus any necessary travel documents for this third country

Sri Lanka visa requirements for Canadian citizens are subject to change, and visitors planning a trip to Sri Lanka should keep up to date with the latest news and travel information from the country.

Embassy registration for Canadian citizens travelling to Sri Lanka

As part of the ETA application, Canadians will be given the opportunity to register with the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate while in Sri Lanka . Signing up for the embassy registration program is not mandatory but has several benefits.

Canadians will receive the latest safety advice and travel information directly from the embassy while in Sri Lanka. They will be more easily contacted in extraordinary circumstances such as a natural disaster, or in case an emergency requires their attention back home.

With the recent economic woes of Sri Lanka, many Sri Lankans are immigrating from the country to Canada in search of a better life. What do you need to immigrate from Sri Lanka to Canada? This article will answer all your questions. Let’s get started.

Popular Immigration programs for Sri Lanka to Canada

Canada has over 80 immigration programs, with some offering permanent residency and others offering temporary stay in the country. Each program has unique requirements, so when immigrating from Sri Lanka to Canada what you need will depend on the immigration program you target.

Programs for Permanent Residency and What You Need

The most popular immigration programs for Sri Lankans seeking permanent residency in Canada are:

FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER PROGRAM (FSWP)

It is open to educated Sri Lankans who are skilled workers and have at least one year of work experience.

Thus, some of the most important application documents for the Federal Skilled Worker Program include proof of education and proof of work experience.

FEDERAL SKILLED TRADE PROGRAM (FSTP)

This is open to Sri Lankans who may not have an education but have at least two years of work experience in a skilled trade.

Thus, the most important documents when applying for the Federal Skilled Trade Program include proof of work experience and a certificate of qualification for the skilled trade.

PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM (PNP)

There are several streams of Provincial Nominee Programs, and they target different categories of immigrants, including recent graduates, skilled workers, and entrepreneurs.

The most important application documents for PNP differ. It could be a college degree (if recent graduates are the target), proof of work experience (if skilled workers are the target), or proof of capacity to start a business in Canada (if entrepreneurs are the target).

However, PNPs are linked to the Express Entry programs, which include the FSWP, the FSTP, and the Canadian Experience Class (which target Sri Lankans that have Canadian work experience). So, apart from meeting the unique requirement of a PNP stream, you must also meet the requirements of the FSWP or the FSTP.

What Do I Need for Canadian Immigration from Sri Lanka?

Immigration Programs for Temporary Stays and What You Need

The most popular immigration programs for Sri Lankans seeking temporary stays in Canada are:

STUDY PERMIT

The Canadian Study Permit is a temporary visa to live and study in Canada, so it’s open to Sri Lankan students who want to further their education in Canada.

The single most important application document for the Study Permit is an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution.

WORK PERMIT

A Canadian Work Permit is a visa allowing foreigners to live and work in Canada on a temporary basis. It is open to Sri Lankans who successfully get Canadian employment.

That said, the most important application document for a work permit is an offer of employment in Canada.

VISITOR VISA

A Canadian Visitor Visa allows a foreigner to enter Canada and stay in the country temporarily. The visitor visa is open to Sri Lankans who go to Canada as tourists, for a family visit, for business, or for compassionate reasons.

Some important application documents for every Canada Visitor Visa are an itinerary (to show what you will do in Canada), account statement (to show proof of funds), and travel history (to show how well you travel out and return to Sri Lanka).

You may need other documents depending on your reason for wanting to visit Canada. For example, if you’re visiting for a family visit, you’ll also need a letter of invitation (from the family member in Canada) and proof of relationship (to show how you are related to the person).

What Do I Need for Canadian Immigration from Sri Lanka?

What you Need for Canadian Immigration from Sri Lanka

To immigrate from Sri Lanka to Canada, you’ll need some of the following:

Identity Documents  – You need a valid international passport, which you will use to prove your identity.

A valid passport isn’t necessarily one that has not expired. When applying for permanent residency programs, your passport should not expire within 6 months. When applying for any of the temporary visas, your passport should be valid past the duration of your stay in Canada.

That is, a passport that will expire in 18 months is invalid when applying for a Study Visa to stay in Canada for two years.

Language Test Result –  You need to show that you are proficient in at least one of the two Canadian official languages (English and French). You need to take an approved English or French test.

While proficiency in one language is sufficient, you get more points for being proficient in both languages.

Work Experience –  Canada seeks immigrants to boost their labor supply, so most of the immigration programs require work experience. The minimum work experience required is one or two years, but the more years of work experience you have, the more points you’ll get.

Educational Certificate –  Most Canadian immigration programs require an educational certificate. Even when an educational qualification is not a requirement (like when applying for FSTP) having an educational certificate makes you a stronger candidate. Also, the higher your certificate, the more points you get.

If you did not obtain your educational certificate in Canada, you’ll need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report, to verify that your foreign certificate meets Canadian standards.

Offer of Employment –  Having an offer of employment is only mandatory for Work Permits and FSTP candidates that do not have a certificate of qualification for their skilled trade. However, even when an offer of employment is not required (like the FSWP), having one earns you additional points and makes you a stronger candidate.

Proof of Funds –  You need to show that you have enough money to take care of yourself while in Canada.

Police Clearance Certificate –  You need to show that you do not have any criminal record that’ll make you a threat in Canada.

Medical Exam Certificate –  You need a medical clearance showing that your health will not be a danger to Canada’s public health or safety, nor will it cause too much demand on Canada’s health or social services.

Proof of Relationship to a Relative in Canada –  When visiting Canada for a family visit, you must show proof of your relationship. For most of the other programs, it is not a requirement. However, even when it is not a requirement, having a relative in Canada earns you additional points. This is because it makes settling in easier.

However, having a particular document is sometimes advisable even if it is not a mandatory requirement for the program you target, as having it would earn you extra points and make you a stronger candidate.

Before applying for one of Canada’s immigration programs, make sure you have everything you need.

Sri Lanka travel visa costs doubled to $100 last month. The reason for the hike is disputed

By monica pitrelli,cnbc • published may 13, 2024 • updated on may 13, 2024 at 8:00 pm.

The cost to obtain a short-term visa to visit Sri Lanka rose from $50 to $100 in April.

But the reason for it is disputed.

Watch NBC Chicago local news and weather for free whenever and wherever

The price hike followed Sri Lanka's transition from using internal Electronic Travel Authorizations, or ETAs, to an e-visa system operated by the visa processing company VFS Global.

Sri Lanka's Tourism Minster Harin Fernando blamed a "technical issue," telling CNBC Thursday that VFS Global "missed out" on offering 30-day visas when it starting processing visas to the country on April 17.

In response, VFS Global said, "Visa categories were introduced as per the directives of [Sri Lanka's] Department of Immigration and Emigration (DI&E)."

Both parties agreed that 30-day travel visas priced at $50 had been reinstated as of May 7. VFS Global, in an email sent to CNBC Monday, said that on this date "the DI&E re-introduced the 30-day visa category for all nationalities."

Another issue: VFS Global's fees

Cramer's Lighting Round: Abercrombie & Fitch is a buy

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Public Security moved away from its ETA system because of concerns over frequent hacking of the website by scammers, Fernando said.

"We wanted to go for a global company which is very reputed," he said.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

VFS Global stood out among the options, he said. The company works with 67 governments and operates in more than 150 countries, according to its website.

But VFS Global's fees angered many in Sri Lanka's travel industry and led to allegations of corruption by Sri Lankan opposition leaders.

The fees — which total some $25 per visa , according to local media — had been disclosed via a contract signed with Sri Lanka's immigration authority on Dec. 21, 2023, a spokesperson from VFS Global told CNBC.

"Service fee charges are approved by all Governments and are determined based on various factors such as scope of the overall engagement, volume of applications expected, resource and infrastructure costs required to fulfil the Service Level Agreements etc," said VFS Global. "For example, in the case of Schengen countries, the service fee for short stay visa can go up to a maximum of 40 Euros."

But these have been significantly reduced for 30-day visas, said Fernando. Now, Sri Lanka's government keeps $40 and VFS Global charges $10, he said.

'Free visas' come with charges

Citizens of seven countries are eligible for free visas to enter Sri Lanka.

"It must be noted — that the 30-day, free visa for seven nationalities namely India, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand were always available and is valid for travel into Sri Lanka up to 31 May 2024," a VFS Global spokesperson said.

However, applicants from these countries still have to pay VFS Global's fees, said Fernando.

"The government of Sri Lanka won't be charging, but the platform … will," he said. As a result, "We're still in debate, whether we should completely give up VFS."

Sri Lanka's "free visa" policy should not to be confused with the "visa-free" agreements enacted in the past year by many Asian countries . These agreements exempt travelers from needing a visa.

Under Sri Lanka's policy, visas are required.

Sri Lanka is considering adding 60 more countries to its "free visa" list, said Fernando.

"Pre-Covid, we had more than 40 countries on the free visa," he said, adding that a committee appointed by the government will issue a decision within 30 days.

"We will definitely have a visa policy in place very soon," he said.

Explained: Sri Lanka’s new expensive visa system

Travellers have to use a new visa portal run by VFS Global

SRI LANKA-RIGHTS/UN

Sri Lanka has come up with a new expensive visa system. Travellers wishing to visit the island country are now required to use a new visa portal run by VFS Global, instead of the previous Electronic Travel Authorization system. The old system, known for its speed and accessibility, has been scrapped.

The new adjustment, which came into force on April 17, was made based on a cabinet decision last year. The cost of Sri Lankan visa has nearly doubled due to the implementation of the new VFS system, along with the addition of $18.5 (INR 1,544.93) as service fee and $5 (INR 417) as convenience fee.

Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando said he had opposed these charges which were not included in the original proposal. He claimed that the decision was not made by his ministry. Fernando further informed that his ministry is working on a proposal for visa free travel for 50 countries.

Sri Lanka has removed the visa charge for citizens from India and six other countries since October 2023. However, with the new system coming into force,  Indian applicants will have to pay roughly $23 as convenience and service fees.

Along with Indians, citizens from China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia have also been exempted from visa charges.

Citizens from countries that are not part of South Asian Association for Regional Coorporation (SAARC) will now have to pay $75 for a standard Sri Lankan tourist visa—an increase of around 50 per cent. Citizens from SAARC countries will have to pay a fee of $35 for a standard tourist visa.

Foreigners who apply for a two-year multiple entry tourist visa will now have to pay a fee of $300. The prices for business visas have also increased.
