Royal Caribbean cruise ship cabin and suite guide: Everything you want to know

Gene Sloan

Picking a cabin on a Royal Caribbean ship can be a daunting task.

For starters, there is an eye-popping number of cabins available on many Royal Caribbean ships. The line is known for operating the world's biggest cruise vessels — ships so big that some have nearly 3,000 cabins each.

But it's not just the sheer volume of cabins that makes picking a room on a Royal Caribbean ship challenging. It's also the number of cabin categories.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On some Royal Caribbean ships, there are as many as 34 different types of cabins — each a little different than the last.

The backstory here is that Royal Caribbean ships are designed to appeal to a wide demographic, including travelers with varying budgets. That prompted Royal Caribbean to offer a wide mix of cabin types.

The line offers rooms that range from relatively low-cost, windowless "inside" cabins measuring just 149 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to massive, multi-room suites that can be more than 10 times that size.

A Royal Caribbean cabin primer

royal caribbean cruise room photos

Like many other cruise ships, Royal Caribbean vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: windowless inside cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

On the newer Royal Caribbean ships, the vast majority of the cabins are balcony cabins. Over the years, cruise lines have discovered that cruisers will pay a significant premium to have a balcony with their cabin, prompting a rush to add more balcony cabins to ships.

Related: The 5 best cabin locations on any cruise ship

For instance, on Royal Caribbean's four-year-old Symphony of the Seas , 65% of the 2,759 cabins are balcony cabins; the next-largest category of cabins are inside cabins followed by ocean-view cabins and suites. Here's the exact breakdown:

  • Inside cabins: 599 (22%).
  • Ocean-view cabins: 176 (6%).
  • Balcony cabins: 1,796 (65%).
  • Suites: 188 (7%).

There are far fewer balcony cabins on older Royal Caribbean ships (and all older cruise ships in general). Only 12% of the cabins on Royal Caribbean's oldest vessel, the 1996-built Grandeur of the Seas, are balcony cabins.

Inside cabins and ocean-view cabins make up the majority (78% in total) of cabins on Grandeur of the Seas. Suites account for 9% of the cabins on the ship. Here's the exact breakdown:

  • Inside cabins: 399 (40%).
  • Ocean-view cabins: 381 (38%).
  • Balcony cabins: 122 (12%).
  • Suites: 94 (9%).

The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a balcony cabin on an older Royal Caribbean ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a balcony cabin is a must, you'll want to book early to ensure you get one.

You'll also want to book early if you're aiming for a suite. An old saw in the cruise industry is that "ships sell from the top and the bottom." That is, the first cabins on any vessel to sell out are the most-expensive cabins, which are the suites, and the least-expensive cabins, which typically are the inside cabins. The "middle" sells last.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

You'll find multiple subcategories within each of the four broad categories of cabins on Royal Caribbean ships. Symphony of the Seas, for instance, has 15 different types of suites alone; suites range from a junior suite with a balcony (Category J3) that measures 287 square feet to a Royal Loft Suite (Category RL) that measures five times that amount.

If you count two types of Symphony of the Seas suites that come in two versions — a standard version and a slightly altered, "accessible" version — there are actually 17 different categories of suites on the vessel.

Royal Caribbean cabins generally have a modern look with clean lines and contemporary furniture, plus lots of storage cleverly worked into the design.

Inside cabins on Royal Caribbean ships

royal caribbean cruise room photos

Inside cabins are designed for passengers on a tight budget. On Royal Caribbean ships, these rooms are almost always the least-expensive option when booking a cabin. You can often save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world (at least, not a traditional window — more on that in a moment).

You'll also be in a very small room. Inside cabins on Symphony of the Seas measure just 149 square feet, quite a bit less than the typical ocean-view cabin on the vessel (those range from 179 to 272 square feet). The typical balcony cabin on Symphony of the Seas is 182 square feet, not including a 50-square-foot balcony.

As I mentioned above, there is one way to get a glimpse of the outside world from an inside cabin on a Royal Caribbean ship. In one of the great cruising innovations, Royal Caribbean has created some inside cabins with a "virtual balcony" that offers a view of the outside.

Related: The upside of booking an inside cabin

royal caribbean cruise room photos

The virtual balcony is a high-definition screen built into one end of the windowless room that projects a real-time view of the ocean outside. It's designed to make you think you're actually in a balcony cabin with a view, and it is quite realistic-looking.

Just don't try to walk through the faux balcony opening.

Ocean-view cabins on Royal Caribbean ships

With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Royal Caribbean's newer ships have relatively few such cabins, as cabins that face outward are usually built with balconies now.

Related: The 6 classes of Royal Caribbean ships, explained

In general, ocean-view cabins on Royal Caribbean ships are bigger than inside cabins and around the same size as balcony cabins (when comparing their interior space). But you can sometimes find ocean-view cabins that are significantly bigger than a typical balcony cabin. This is sometimes the case for ocean-view cabins at the front or back of ships, where there can be relatively large but oddly shaped rooms with windows but no balconies.

Royal Caribbean has built ocean-view cabins at the front of some ships that incorporate the angled space in the front part of the superstructure. As a result, they have sloping windows, and a bit more floor space around these windows (see the image below).

royal caribbean cruise room photos

Royal Caribbean's Radiance-class ships, notably, have a category called Ultra Spacious Ocean View; it includes cabins at the front and back of the ship that measure 319 square feet — nearly twice as much as the typical ocean-view cabin on the vessels (which measures 170 square feet). Each of these bigger ocean-view cabins has two twin beds that can convert into a royal king bed, one double sofa bed and either one Pullman bed and one twin bed or two Pullman beds.

These bigger cabins can hold up to six people, making them popular with families.

Balcony cabins on Royal Caribbean ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Royal Caribbean is delivering, with huge numbers of balcony cabins on all its newest ships. On the line's five Oasis-class ships, which began debuting in 2009, around 65% of rooms are balcony cabins. On the line's even-newer Quantum-class ships, which began debuting in 2014, the percentage is even higher — around 69%.

The typical Royal Caribbean balcony cabin has a contemporary look, with clean lines and relatively minimalist furniture. It will typically offer twin beds that can be converted into a royal king bed, a desk and a sofa that often pulls out into an additional bed. It typically measures around 180 square feet, not including the balcony area.

royal caribbean cruise room photos

A few Royal Caribbean ships have balcony cabins that face toward the vessel's center, not toward the outside. If this seems like a paradox, it is. It results from an unusual design feature of one series of Royal Caribbean ships, the Oasis class.

Related: 6 reasons to book a balcony cabin

The Oasis-class vessels are so wide that they have room for an interior, open-air "Boardwalk" amusement area at their backs lined with inward-facing cabins. On Oasis-class ships, you thus can get a balcony cabin facing the sea or a balcony cabin facing inward, toward the Boardwalk area.

Suites on Royal Caribbean ships

Royal Caribbean is known for having some of the cruise world's most spectacular suites, including (on some ships) suites that sprawl over two decks.

Royal Caribbean isn't a luxury cruise line. However, the top suites on its vessels offer an experience keeping with what you'll find on some of the world's top luxury ships. Depending on the ship, these suites can come with such perks as private butlers (called Royal Genies) who attend to your every need, access to a private restaurant, access to a private suite lounge and sun deck, reserved seating in entertainment venues and priority boarding and disembarkation.

Related: 7 reasons you should splurge on a suite on your next cruise

They also have a much higher price tag than the typical Royal Caribbean cabin. These rooms are aimed at well-heeled travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the sort of mass-market, megaship cruise experience that Royal Caribbean offers over the more intimate, white-glove experience you'll find on the small ships that luxury lines operate.

royal caribbean cruise room photos

As noted above, there is a wide range of suite categories on some Royal Caribbean ships. Among the line's most spectacular suites are the Royal Loft Suites on some of the newer Royal Caribbean vessels. Two decks high, they offer a soaring living room space framed by a glass wall that offers stunning views.

Related: The 5 most spectacular suites at sea

royal caribbean cruise room photos

The Royal Loft Suites on Oasis-class ships measure nearly 1,800 square feet and feature two bedrooms, a large living room with a soaring ceiling and a dining area. The Royal Loft Suites on Quantum-class vessels are nearly 1,640 square feet and also sprawl over two decks.

Royal Caribbean is also famous for its Ultimate Family Suite : a two-deck-high suite complex designed for families with young kids. It offers a slide from a second-floor kids room to the main level and extras like a foosball table. Currently, there are only Ultimate Family Suites on three Royal Caribbean ships: Wonder of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.

Note that these family suites often carry an astronomical price, falling in the $20,000-a-week range.

Smaller suites on Royal Caribbean ships include Grand Loft Suites, which can measure around 700 to 850 square feet. That's much smaller than the Royal Loft Suites but about four times the size of a standard balcony cabin.

royal caribbean cruise room photos

Bottom line

Royal Caribbean has something for everyone when it comes to cabins on its ships. You can book a small, inside cabin that will get you on board one of the line's vessels at a very reasonable cost, or a huge suite that will set you back many times more but come with all sorts of perks.

This Cruise Ship Suite Has the Best Panoramic Views of the Ocean

T he cheapest way to cruise with any cruise line, on any cruise ship, no matter the itinerary, is to book an interior cabin. Because you don’t get a window, never mind a balcony, you pay a lot less. Besides the cost, staying in an interior room can be a blessing in disguise as it forces you to spend a lot of time outside to take in the views, and consequently pushes you to enjoy more of the ship and the many experiences on offer. For those who can splurge, however, there’s one type of cabin that will make you want to spend as much time inside as possible: Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate Panoramic Suite.

Ultimate Panoramic Suites on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas

Photo: Photo: Royal Caribbean

Out of all 28 ships that make up the Royal Caribbean fleet, there’s only one ship with Ultimate Panoramic Suites: The Oasis of the Seas. Even then, the ship, which has 2801 staterooms, only has two Ultimate Panoramic Suites (both of which able to accommodate four guests.)

royal caribbean cruise room photos

What makes Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate Panoramic Suites so special isn’t the 914 square foot of space — even though it includes a large living area, a walk-in closet, or a very spacious bathroom with a bathtub with a view, a shower, and a double sink — it’s the windows.

Located at the bow of the ship, the suites’ floor-to-ceiling windows offer 270-degree panoramic views, which are best enjoyed from the master bedroom. Guests who stay in Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate Panoramic Suites benefit from the same vistas the captain and their crew have from the bridge, which is located just below the rooms.

The two Ultimate Panoramic Suites were added to the Oasis of the Seas upon the ship’s refurbishment in 2019, and while Royal Caribbean has much newer ships than the Oasis of the Seas, some featuring Panoramic Suites, none of them have the specific configuration that provides such impressive views.

Room decor packages for birthdays or anniversary

By shanley , August 30, 2015 in Royal Caribbean International

Cool Cruiser

Anyone have experience with pre-ordering the room decor packages for a birthday? My daughter's 12th birthday is on embarkation day. The prices seem high for what you are getting. Also, I can only see a thumbnail size photo of the decorations.

N ON-DELUXE Package includes:

1 Magnetic Door Decoration

1 Mirror Cling

1 Wire Photo Cable w/Clips

2 Hanging Ceiling Decor

1 Photo Frame

DELUXE Package includes:

1 Set of Pillow Cases

1 Beach Towel

Anyone have pictures or opinions?

I saw on youtube a child's cabin was decorated by the steward (not with the package above) and they received a gift from the kids club. Is this common?

I've seen the decorations and don't think they are anything special for the price. And, there are times that they do not go up before your arrival. They'll get them up when they can. So, I'd visit the $$$ store before you leave home and at the first opportunity, distract DD, get her out of the cabin and do the place up yourself.;)

I did once for my hubby's bday....it made the cabin festive...it was worth it to me...still have one of the blue balls.....

DarthGrady

I've only done it once, it was on Carnival for our honeymoon. It was nice, but the cost would prevent me from doing it again.

I have decorated the stateroom and stateroom door many times with dollar store decorations. I agree with others that from what I have seen the RCL decoration packages are not worth it.

I have also printed and laminated pictures / graphics from the internet. It is all part of the fun of planning for the vacation!

They changed what is provided in the decoration packages in the last couple of months.

I ordered the Deluxe Anniversary package on the Grandeur the last week of July. I thought the color scheme was nice. The two pillow cases (which we used only during the day), and the beach towel were good quality, and we took them home (as well as the picture frame.)

Much better than the generic "congratulations" package from a couple of years ago.

My wife certainly appreciated the decorations.

Hozhoni

Me too...buy your own bring on board and tape :) love the glow bracelets too for night time on Deck fun!!!

On our recent July Oasis cruise my daughter and son surprised DW with the deluxe package. We were both surprised as the stateroom door had a rather large magnetic sign saying SURPRISE!. I can't find a picture of the door but here are some shots of the room.

  • 2 weeks later...

I appreciate the responses about the room decor. I think I will just bring a few things from home and make a magnetic door sign.

Does RCI bring a small cake in the MDR for birthdays? I know other cruise lines do it. I don't really want to order a cake that feeds 8 when only 2 will eat it.

Royal brings one small piece of cake for the person who is having the birthday.

Thanks. I think I'll let DD have a piece of cake just for her and not bother with ordering a cake. Save the money for other things.

Those decorations look lot different than the birthday decorations we got for our son in 2015.

He was SOOOOOOOO excited when we got to the room, and it was decorated. That said, he wouldn't care about a frame. And I'm sure the price has gone up.

Hi, I noticed that when attempting to buy birthday decorations for my oasis of the seas cruise, it specifically says the decorations are not available on .... And it lists a bunch of ships including the oasis. Does that mean none are allowed anymore? Or they just don’t offer them on those ships?

You can decorate your stateroom however you like. They are just saying that they don't offer the decoration service on the listed ships.

konkordkruisers

I ordered the anniversary package for our room. I'm hoping it was worth it. The description made it sound very nice.

Decorations used to be way better than they are now. You are better off going to Party City or something like that and bringing your own. We were totally disappointed that we paid for our anniversary decorations. They were totally lame compared to what they used to be like.

ATSEAMYLIFE

We did it to surprise or granddaughters on Oasis in October. We did the deluxe and they still sleep on the pillow cases. I thought it was worth it for the surprise factor for them and their parents.

dadofjessie

dadofjessie

For us too. I ordered the anniversary decorations for our next cruise on the Allure next December 2 as it will be our 30th on December 4. Looking forward to DW's surprise.

BobNoxious

My girlfriend ordered one of the packages for us on our last cruise. It was a great surprise and the streamer things that hang from the ceiling are magnetic! I took the decorations off the clips and used them to hang our tour tickets, hats, day planner etc. I brought it home and it will be going with us on our next cruise!

I read on a previous thread how people ordered a package prior to their cruise and certain things (cake) didn't make it or they were out of something. With that in mind for my Wife's 40th b-day cruise in March I hit Party City and $ store to collect what I wanted. I spoke with the maitre'd on the first night prior to dinner and ordered a cake ($25) for a surprise at dinner on Day 2. Everything worked out great except for the surprise part at dinner. They brought the cake out and left it on the prep station for about 10 mins and our 4 yr old and his cousin said there's your cake :). Surprise!!! They eventually sang happy B-day to her. The cake was very good.

One of her friends (who wasn't traveling with us) ordered her a surprise package and it never made it. RC called us and offered my wife a towel or beach bag as a gift. They left both for her in our room.

Loricake1.jpg.21cb7ea4ed3dc8e1d4dd9470890c6f2b.jpg

I bought the anniversary package for our 25th onboard Liberty a couple of years ago. Got the one with the cake. My wife was very appreciative of the effort, so that made it worthwhile to me.

In hindsight, if I were to do it again, I'd go without the cake. It was ok, but there are just so many other dessert options that we hardly ate any of it.

The large anniversary heart from the door was on our fridge until quite recently.

I ordered the anniversary package for our cruise last year (for our 20th) to surprise my wife, and saw nothing. I complained to GS, and they refunded the money, and then that night, the cake showed up. The cake was good, but the whole point was to have decorations when we arrived.

Going on Oasis this month for our 25th anniversary, bought decorations at Party City, I wanted 25th specific ones! I got the sticky stuff that comes off and leaves no residue. I also have magnetic strip tape also in case needed.

Man allegedly hid secret camera in Royal Caribbean cruise ship bathroom: DOJ

He allegedly filmed 150 people, including 40 minors, Justice Department said.

The Justice Department recently unsealed charges against a man who allegedly put a camera inside a bathroom onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship and filmed 150 people, including 40 minors.

Jeremy Froias boarded a Royal Caribbean ship bound for St. Maarten, San Juan and the Bahamas, in Miami on April 29, according to a complaint unsealed last week in federal court in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"On or about April 30, 2023, when the Harmony was navigating in international waters, Froias installed a hidden Wi-Fi camera in a public bathroom on the aft of the Harmony's top deck, between the 'Flow Rider' surfing simulator and a bar," an FBI special agent said in a criminal complaint. That bathroom was a unisex bathroom, according to court documents.

When a passenger reported there was a hidden camera in the bathroom, security found it and reviewed the micro SD card that was inserted into the camera, which allegedly showed Froias adjusting the camera and connecting it to his phone.

"The initial videos depict Froias hiding the camera and adjusting the angle of the camera, so it focuses on the area of the toilet," the complaint says. "Froias is also seen taking his Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max out of his pocket and appears to have connected the phone to the hidden camera using Wi-Fi. Froias then exits the bathroom."

More than 150 individuals, including 40 minors, were seen naked or partially naked on camera, the Justice Department alleged, some as young as 4 or 5 years old.

"Individuals are seen coming into the bathroom to either use the toilet or to change into or out of swimsuits," court documents say. "Froias' camera captured these individuals in various stages of undress, including capturing videos of their naked genitals, buttocks and female breasts."

Cruise ship security interviewed Froias, and he allegedly admitted to placing the camera in the bathroom and knew it had been found because he was not able to find it when he went to go get it a day later, court documents state.

Froias is charged with video voyeurism and attempted possession of child exploitation material. He was released on a $25,000 bond by a judge Monday pending trial. He didn't enter a plea.

The FBI set up a website for anyone who might've been a victim to report it to the agency.

"The FBI believes he primarily targeted cruise ship passengers between the timeframe of April 30 and May 1, 2023, who may have used the public bathroom on the aft of the Harmony's top deck between the 'Flow Rider' surfing simulator and a bar," the form says. "Passengers using this bathroom may have been video recorded by Froias."

A lawyer for Froias has not yet responded to ABC News' request for comment.
