On This Page
Lyon lies at the junction of the rhône and saone rivers, vienne offers extraordinary history, culture & gastronomy, tournon-sur-rhone is a gorgeous rhone village surrounded by vineyards and forests, arles is as pretty as a (van gogh) painting, avignon is sophisticated, stylish and steeped in history.
Overview : Poised at the edge of food-famous Provence, the wine-drenched Beaujolais region and at the junction of the Rhône and Saone rivers, Lyon offers a sampling of everything the Rhône offers. Once the global hub of the silk trade, Roman ruins, Renaissance architecture, and modern arts round out this vibrant city.
Don't Miss : The included tour with Viking focuses on Vieux Lyon, the city’s old quarter. The 19th-century Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere perches above the city, but the views aren't the only draw; a gorgeous mosaic interior survived religious revolution. The region's famous, hearty bouchon restaurants wait below on the cobblestone streets. Between them are a warren of covered alleyways, or traboules, remnants of the silk trade's need for protected paths. Viking's local guides know which seemingly benign Renaissance doors lead to the whimsical winding ways.
Independent Meanderings : History lovers will appreciate the 1st-century Gallo-Roman amphitheater and museum, an easy walk down from the Basilica. Outside the old town, the three-story Les Halles food market is a festival of delicious eats. Other options include exploring Lyon's fabric dynasty at the Textile Museum and the tragic and moving stories from World War II at the Resistance and Deportation History Center.
Further Afield : Many optional shore excursions cover winemaking and food tasting, but a Beaujolais and truffles tour focuses on field-to-table experience. Start at a family-owned organic goat milk farm complete with a wine and cheese tasting. Then it's off to hunt for truffles before delighting in the host's home-cooked three-course lunch. Finish it all off with wine tasting at a classic Beaujolais winery .
Hidden Gems and Insider Tips : As the day ends, grab a cheap funicular ticket from the self-service machine and head up to the Basilica's overlook. After taking in the golden hour view, head down through the gardens as the sun sets.
Overview : Once a key outpost in Julius Caesar's Roman empire, Vienne saw the flow of commerce and culture at its confluence of the Rhône and Gėre rivers. Intact ruins and a Gothic cathedral survived continual wars between Burgundy, Provence and Rome.
Don't Miss : Vienne is older than Lyon and packs its history into an easily walkable center. Viking's included tour takes in the Cathedral of St. Maurice. Watch for the headless statues, casualties of France's religious wars in the 16th century and the rare zodiac frieze above the exit. The 1st-century Temple of Augustus and Livia and remains of ramparts, aqueducts, and thermal baths fill the area. The 4th-century Roman theater on the hillside seats more than 13,000 and hosts a modern jazz festival every July.
Independent Meanderings : Vienne has bespoke shopping, delightful pastries and chocolatiers. Hemmed in by the river, the hillside, and two regional highways, exploring the old town's perfectly contained narrow streets is easy. Splurge on some goodies and then grab a coffee or Aperol Spritz next to the temple, reflecting on the centuries of people who have enjoyed the same routine.
Further Afield : While there are no optional excursions available out of the city from Vienne, grab a glass of wine to set sail with. The valleys ahead are stacked with stone villages, steep hills covered in vineyards, chateaus, locks, low bridges and, often, children on the shore waving and yelling, "Bonjour!"
Hidden Gems and Insider Tips : One of the included walking tours will take groups on a steep, twenty-minute incline to the church, Chapelle of Notre Dame de Pipet. Panoramic views overlook the town with the Roman amphitheater directly below.
Overview : This medieval town complete with a modest castle has a relaxed village atmosphere in a narrow valley with forested and vineyard hills rising on either side.
Don't Miss : Viking's included Tournon tour, which takes you on a steam train through the Doux forest and valley. This French historic monument cuts a course inaccessible to vehicles, rumbling through the wilderness before a hand-cranked turnabout sends the train back to Tournon.
For those wanting a more active excursion, a guided trek winds through the birthplace of syrah, through leafy vineyard views of the Rhône, the town's castle, and your ship. The tour ends with a wine tasting in Tain-l'Hermitage.
Independent Meanderings : With so much to do in the area, it is easy to overlook the town itself. Consider a gentle stroll around the plaza, by the castle, and across the pedestrian suspension bridge for a sense of this beguiling town.
Further Afield : A day-long excursion out of Tournon takes in the scenic Ardeche River. Stops at a lavender oil distillery and botanical garden explore the region’s lavender harvest. Pass by the region's gorge, the "Grand Canyon of Europe," before visiting the medieval village of Vogue snuggled between the river and its cliffs.
A quick stop in the village of Viviers pairs with Tournon for ships sailing either direction. The free tour is worth a post-dinner walk in this relaxed, beautifully-preserved 5th-century town set in gentle mountains.
Hidden Gems and Insider Tips : If you're taking the train, grab a jacket; the journey into the forest is breezy. For those on the vineyard route, make a quick detour to the famous chocolate manufacturer based in the small town of Tain-l'Hermitage Valrhona, when walking back to the ship. The samples at the door will have your mouth watering.

Overview : In a region full of Roman gems, Arles stands out. Once the capital of Roman Gaul, the UNESCO World Heritage Site's striking ruins echo the famous sites in Rome. Arles stands at the edge of the wild preserves in Camargue, and its distinctly Mediterranean feel -- all glowing sunflowers and tall cypresses -- may have you sitting and enjoying the sunlight as Vincent Van Gogh did.
Don't Miss : The arena in Arles has two surviving levels of arcade arches, giving a strong impression of how the more than 20,000 fans took in dramatic and often gruesome battles and chariot races in this 1st-century structure. A Roman theater, circus, Romanesque church, and the hospital that treated Van Gogh round out the complimentary tour.
Independent Meanderings : Easel signposts mark a Van Gogh trail, indicating where the artists painted and captured life in Arles. The tourist information center has maps and sells museum passes.
Further Afield : Outside of Arles, Viking guests can take an afternoon tour to a quarry's large-scale art installation before visiting Les Baux, a famously curated village restored to picture perfection. Day-trippers looking for a unique and widely unknown French experience should head to Camargue, a world of traditional gardian cowboys and Mediterranean villages. Visit migrating flamingos in the nature preserves and spy pink salt flats from the moodily medieval walls of Aigues-Mortes.
Hidden Gems and Insider Tips : Whatever adventure you choose, try to be up for the ship's approach to Arles, as the journey into port feels timeless.
Overview : Defined by rebellious popes who rejected Rome to make a home in France, Avignon today is more than just a history lesson. Sophisticated shops and a university town energy keep this famous spot as desirable now as it was to the papacy in the 14th-century.
Don't Miss : While this walled city holds many wonders, the Palace of Popes is a must. Tour tablets provided at the start give visitors a room-by-room sense of what the mostly bare behemoth would have looked like in luxury. Viking’s included tour includes the palace, a trip to the central square and Market Hall.
Independent Meanderings : There are many options away from the busy palace area. For a particularly bohemian stroll, wander Rue des Teinturiers. The "Street of Dyers" follows a stream packed with cafes, galleries, fabric shops, and the 1800s water wheels that once powered the city and is just a short stroll from where the ship docks.
Further Afield : An optional half-day excursion takes wine lovers to the historic Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine region, the summer residence of the Avignon popes. Others visit the Roman Empire's iconic Pont Du Gard Aqueduct . The three-tiered waterway once channeled 44 million gallons of water daily. For those that would rather be in the water, a morning kayak tour starts north of Avignon. The five-mile paddle back takes you directly under the remains of the UNESCO World Heritage Site's medieval bridge.
Hidden Gems and Insider Tips : Follow the signs for the Pope's Promenade up from the Palace to a shaded city park at the city's peak. Gardens, ponds, and tasty treat vendors make a peaceful stop. Then head down the opposite side for lingering views of the Pont d'Avignon and a brief walk along the city ramparts.

Welcome to the Rhône River
Romancing travelers for centuries, the Rhône River is a true feast for the senses. Filled with magical landscapes, sun-dappled villages bathed in history and many opportunities to savor the exceptional culinary delights along the way... in markets overflowing with local bounties... at a French cooking school... in local patisseries and fabled restaurants.
Châteauneuf-du-pape wine country, in avignon along the rhône, a professional sommelier guides you through a tasting and pairing of châteauneuf-du-pape wines.
The popes who reigned over the Roman Catholic Church in Avignon during the 14th century enjoyed not only their formidable lodgings in the fortress-like Palais des Papes, but also the fruit of the vine; they are credited with cultivating the local wine industry widely recognized today by the appellation, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Today the life of this region still centers around growing, producing and enjoying wine – as you'll see for yourself when a professional sommelier guides you through a tasting and pairing of fine Rhône Valley wines that go perfectly with the unforgettable midday meal you helped prepare… truly an experience to remember!
Les Halles de Lyon
Tasting your way through a culinary icon in lyon.
Lyon is considered the "culinary capital of France" – quite a compliment in a country famed for its cuisine and fine vintages. You'll discover why during a tasting at the famous Les Halles de Lyon, the celebrated indoor food market that's been a fixture in Lyon since 1850. It offers an unbelievable array of breads, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, sausages, wines, chocolates... the list goes on. Everything is fresh and delicious, and it's said that the best chefs in Lyon shop here… so enjoy!
Truffle hunting in the Rhône Valley
Trained dogs and "black diamonds" – truffles – in grignan along the rhône.
The Italians call them tartufo, but to the French and much of the rest of the world, they're known as truffles. But whatever you call it, this rare, pungent (and highly perishable) fungus that grows under the ground in certain parts of Europe is one of the most expensive foods on Earth, highly prized by chefs and gourmets around the globe. Centuries ago, early truffle-hunters used pigs, with their keen sense of smell, to root these treasures out of the ground… but the piggies usually ate the truffles as soon as they found them! So they began training dogs to sniff them out... like the pooches you'll meet and go truffle-hunting with today at a truffle farm in Grignan… followed by a tasting of products made with this precious ingredient.
Tauck Exclusive – Evening at the Duché d'Uzès
Our exclusive gala evening at the duché d'uzès.
The Duke of Uzès kindly requests your presence at his family castle for dinner. Expect to be wined and dined at a grand château that architecturally chronicles its history, from its foundation on the site of a Roman governor's home in the first millennium to its role as the medieval residence of an exiled 9th-century Duchess, the first woman in the Occident to write a book, to its Renaissance renovation, its languish in the Revolution, its 19th- and 20th-century reincarnation as a school to its meticulous renovation in 1954 by the influential Marchioness of Crussol who reacquired the family home. Her vision comes to life in treasured keepsakes and a resplendent décor that provide a stunning setting for Tauck's exclusive gala evening.
Ranch life in la Camargue
An exclusive provençal experience on a family owned ranch in la camargue.
Drive past marshy fields of grazing bulls and white horses to a privately owned ranch in la Camargue, where the Rhône meets the sea, and experience a different taste of Provençal life for Tauck guests only. It begins with a horseback welcome by the warm-hearted family who lives here, continues with a farm-fresh feast of locally produced fare and a heartfelt guitar serenade, and culminates in a display of skill by Provençal cowboys (known as gardians) that will have your heart racing at every turn.

Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys
Inspired by the destination.
For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

the epitome of sensuality
A luxury river cruise on the rhône.
As a torrential mountain stream it thunders through the mountains of the Gotthard Massif, leaves Lake Geneva as a broad current and then turns into a deep, clear blue – the Rhône. Travel on the Rhône has a long history. During construction work in Lyon in 2003, six small ships were found which originated from the first century of our era. Wine was transported on the river in the Middle Ages, and also olive oil in amphora or marble from Italy.
Along the Rhône
The landscape of the Rhône is a dream. It runs through France’s most beautiful regions, such as Burgundy, Rhône-Alpes and into Provence. Enchanting cities such as Arles and Avignon line its banks, beavers and river otters live in its wetlands – and its arms form the Camargue Delta, where flamingos strut through salt lakes and white horses live in the wild. The Rhône is the epitome of sensuality. A river for gourmets and for people who love the beautiful things in life. The scent of the Rhône is lavender and herbs. Of course, this is probably called savoir vivre .
This city is a jewel for people interested in both yesterday and today. Vienne is a small town, but already boasted 30,000 inhabitants in the 2nd century. Trade and steam navigation brought an upswing in the 19th century. And what can you expect to see? Definitely the Archaeological Museum, the St-Romain-en-Gal museum complex with the “House of the Ocean Gods” and the remains of the former thermal baths. And afterwards, it’s best to sit down in a café and enjoy the present.
At night, the stories seem to emanate from the walls of the nearby houses. Narrow alleys. Cobblestone. This small town is a true gem. Yes, a walk through Viviers is a journey back to the Middle Ages, because the former bishop’s town was spared the destruction of wars. Besides small shops, there are also big things to see. For example, the cathedral with special works of art such as the five tapestries – three of them were given to the bishop by Napoléon III. A highlight in the truest sense of the word is the viewpoint in the upper town. What a view of this enchanting place.
Marc Seguin’s most beautiful suspension bridge spans the Rhône between Tournon and the neighbouring village of Tain-l’Hermitage. Tournon is France “in miniature” : With a castle, a stunning museum dedicated to the history of the Counts of Tournon, maritime navigation and the works of Seguin. And a botanical garden, all very secluded! Don’t miss the exhibition at the historic chocolate factory in Tain-l’Hermitage, very delicious!
This pearl of Provence is surrounded by the most beautiful natural parks in Europe. Today, Arles is the epitome of important art and a contemporary witness to an eventful history, from the amphitheatre to proud patrician houses. And what would Arles be without van Gogh – strolling through the town in the footsteps of this great artist – that too is unforgettable.
Lyon is the destination for fine food fans. 2000 years of rich history. Musée des Beaux-Arts. The old town with cobblestone streets. The Basilica Notre-Dame and a magnificent view over the city and the countryside. Silk painting in the smart working-class district of La Croix-Rousse. The gourmet temple of Les Halles de Lyon de Paul Bocuse. The finest cuisine in the region’s typical “Bouchon” style. So much sensuality. So much pleasure.
It is a city of unparalleled beauty. It curves its way over the river Rhône, and has done so since 1840. The Pont Saint-Bénézet acquired international fame through the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon”. Crossing it, you find yourself immediately in front of the Papal Palace, one of the largest and most important medieval buildings in Europe. It arose, it must be said, out of sheer laziness: For the Archbishop of Bordeaux did not wish to travel to Rome for his papal consecration. He had himself crowned in Lyon and had a palace built in Avignon. A monument.

Embark in Lyon
On arrival we transfer by coach to our ship moored in Lyon’s historic centre. Our dedicated English-speaking crew will welcome you on board and help you to your cabin. After settling into your spacious and tastefully furnished accommodation, there’s time to familiarise yourself with this floating five-star hotel.
Nothing beats the excitement of waking up somewhere new and as you rise this morning, we arrive in the delightful town of Mâcon, the capital of the Mâconnais region of Burgundy. After our first splendid breakfast, we depart the ship and enjoy the short drive to Cluny Abbey, one of the most glorious Benedictine abbeys of the Christian Middle Ages. In the 12th century, a network of 1450 abbeys and 10,000 monks made up the order of Cluny under a highly original and successful system; the Abbots of Cluny became leaders on the international stage and the monastery of Cluny was considered the most prestigious monastic institution in Europe. Its wealth enabled the monastery to hire workers to do the traditional labour of monks allowing them to devote themselves to almost constant prayer, thus elevating their position into a profession. Despite the monastic ideal of a frugal life, Cluny Abbey commissioned candelabras of solid silver and gold chalices made with precious gems for use at the abbey Masses. Instead of being limited to the traditional fare of broth and porridge, the monks ate very well, enjoying roasted chickens (a luxury in France then), wines from their vineyards and cheeses made by their employees. The monks wore the finest linen religious habits and silk vestments at Mass. Artefacts exemplifying the wealth of Cluny Abbey are today on display at the Musée de Cluny in Paris. Whilst much of the abbey was destroyed during the Revolution, we enjoy a fascinating guided tour of this atmospheric place.
We are in the heart of this famous wine-producing region where vines have been planted since Gallo-Roman times. We visit one of the region’s best winemakers for a tour and tasting in a historic chateau. Mâcon was once known for its red wines, but the twentieth century saw its white wines also coming to prominence. Today, the Mâcon appellation oversees 53 hectares of vineyard, 70% of which is dedicated to the production of white wine, principally Chardonnay. After learning about the time-old traditions of wine-production, sample a selection of its finest produce. We return to our ship stopping off at the geological phenomenon Solutre Rock – an important prehistoric site surrounded by lush vineyards, made famous by the ritual ascents of French President Francois Mitterrand during the 1980s.
Cruise towards Chalon
Back on board reconvene in the restaurant for lunch during which we slip our moorings. After lunch, enjoy an onboard cheese tasting with the chance to sample a selection of delicious local produce served with breads and a variety of mustards. Then settle in for a leisurely afternoon up on deck or acquaint yourself with the ship’s excellent facilities – perhaps a dip in the splashpool or indulge yourself with a spa treatment.
Tonight, enjoy another superb dinner as we arrive in the picturesque town of Chalon. Enjoy an onboard cheese tasting after tonight's dinner with the chance to sample a selection of delicious local produce served with breads and a variety of mustards.
Included experiences:
Guided tour of Cluny Abbey, wine tasting & on-board cheese tasting.
Chalon & Beaune
Chalon & Beaune
Rising this morning we’re berthed in Chalon, gateway to Burgundy and home of Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor of photography. On this morning’s tour we see some of the pretty villages that produce some of the world’s most sublime wines – Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, and many more. Nearby is medieval Beaune, Burgundy’s wine capital and one of the most picturesque walled towns in the region. At its centre is the Hospices de Beaune, also known as the Hôtel-Dieu. Originally built in the 15th-century as a hospital for the disadvantaged, it’s a jewel of High Gothic architecture, instantly recognisable for its colourful glazed roof tiles arranged in dazzling geometric patterns. Today it’s a museum showcasing famous works by artists such as Van der Weyden and a prestigious annual wine auction takes place here each November, with proceeds going to the Hospices. We’ll get to enjoy a guided tour of its fine interior during a guided walking tour, strolling through Beaune’s attractive streets and then there’s time for you to explore under your own steam. Why not visit the fascinating Dalineum museum dedicated to the Catalan artist Salvador Dali with a collection of his surrealist paintings, sculptures, furniture and photographs, or simply enjoy the view from a pavement café and absorb the ambience of this historic spot.
Cruise towards Lyon
We return to the ship for lunch as we recommence our journey to Lyon. This afternoon, take to the deck for a lazy afternoon on a sun lounger or catch up on some reading in a quiet corner in the lounge as the ever-changing river views seamlessly drift by - holidays really don’t get more relaxing this! Gradually the vine-clad slopes of the hazy green Beaujolais hills come into view as we approach one of the world’s most revered red wine-producing regions. On our right we see the picturesque villages of Morgon, Fleurie, Juliénas, Chénas and many more, while on the left you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of snow-capped Mont Blanc – Western Europe’s highest mountain. As the afternoon melts away, you’re completely unwound, and thoughts turn to tonight’s dinner. Take in the views and chat with your fellow travelers over an aperitif on the terrace area.
Included experience:
Guided tour of Beaune.
Overnight the ship has cruised almost imperceptibly downstream, and we have arrived once more in the delightful city of Lyon. The Rhône Valley has been the route of choice for marauding armies and peaceful traders for centuries, and Lyon’s current site, at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, cried out to be fortified. In 43 BC the Romans founded the city, which subsequently grew in importance; the Emperor Claudius, conqueror of Britain, was born here. There are many Roman remains to see, but it was the production of silk that brought Lyon to prominence during the Middle Ages, and throughout the city you can see signs of the wealth that poured in – Renaissance buildings, imposing churches and Europe’s largest pedestrian square, Place Bellecour, with a statue of Louis XIV as its focus.
The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is crammed with antique shops and intriguing traboules – narrow covered passageways enabling silk merchants to transport their wares to the river without getting wet – that today are a joy to amble through. As well as its glorious architecture, Lyon is generally acknowledged as France’s (and to locals the world’s) gastronomic capital. In fairness it has much to commend it: nouvelle cuisine was invented near here and the city boasts a huge array of speciality food shops and eateries, including 20 restaurants with one or more Michelin stars and countless little places to eat and drink. We enjoy a city tour taking in the main sights, stopping to visit the impressive 19th-century Basilica and take in spectacular views of the city; after a short walking tour you’ll have free time to explore under your own steam.
Cruise towards Le Pouzin
Return to the ship for lunch as we slip our moorings once more for an afternoon’s scenic cruising. We pass the historic Roman town of Vienne, strikingly located in a narrow section of the Rhône where the river meanders dramatically around a steep bluff.
As the Rhône squeezes and twists past Condrieu, Saint-Rambert-d’Albon and Saint-Vallier, with wooded cliffs rising high on both sides the views are particularly spectacular. Traditionally these stretches were the most dangerous due to fierce currents and varying water levels but, with the waters now tamed by a series of locks whose complex mechanisms never cease to fascinate, you can relax on the Sun Deck savouring the glorious vistas. As the afternoon drifts into evening what could be better than a cool, crisp glass in the lounge before enjoying this evening’s culinary delights in the restaurant, prepared by our outstanding chef.
Guided tour of Lyon.
Ardèche Gorges
Overnight we have arrived in Le Pouzin and this morning after breakfast we depart the ship for a spectacular drive to explore the beautiful Ardèche Gorges, whose scale is a fitting reminder of Mother Nature’s awesome power. Sheer limestone cliffs plunge almost 1,000 feet to the river’s blue waters, which elegantly snake their way through stupendous rock formations, culminating in a huge natural arch, the Pont d’Arc. Caves, grottoes and natural sculptures create marvellous views at every turn before we return to the gentler slopes of the Rhône Valley, where our ship is moored in charming Viviers, a medieval town clustered around its 12th-century cathedral.
Cruise towards Avignon
We continue through the famous lock at Bollène as you relax over lunch after which there’s time for a siesta in the sun or afternoon cup of tea on the deck whilst taking in the views. Increasingly the landscape gradually becomes less green with more ochres and magentas, the houses have sloping terracotta roofs typical of the Mediterranean and the air carries heady aromas of pine and cypress. You can only be in the Midi or – as we call it – the south of France.
Dusk falls and as we reconvene for dinner, Avignon’s majestic skyline comes into view, and we moor up in this legendary city. Later sink into a comfy seat in the lounge over your favourite digestif from the well-stocked bar and relax as we listen to an on-board performance from a local accordionist playing traditional music.
Visit to the Ardèche Gorges & on-board accordionist performance.
Avignon, Pont du Gard & Uzès
The light catching the red roofs of Avignon’s majestic skyline is a sight to behold over breakfast, after which we embark on a guided tour of one of the most extraordinary and intriguing cities in France. Avignon’s destiny changed during the 14th century, when the Pope’s court moved here to avoid strife in Rome. Igniting a century of prosperity, the Pontiff commissioned a host of ambitious building projects, and today the city is immaculately preserved, nestling behind its almost-intact 14th-century walls and boasting more remarkable monuments, superbly decorated buildings, churches, chapels and convents than you can possibly count. Most important is the stunning Popes’ Palace, made up of two buildings that together form the largest Gothic palace in the world. With turrets, towers, parapets and other fortifications, its exterior resembles a mighty fortress, while the interior is a tour de force of medieval architecture and ornamentation, adorned with priceless frescoes, Gobelin tapestries and graceful sculptures. The ceremonial hall, chapels, cloisters and private apartments are all unmissable. But to truly embrace the feel of papal Avignon, imagine yourself here during the Middle Ages amid the Palace’s rich furnishings and extravagant decoration, with cardinals, princes and ambassadors milling about its candle-lit halls and corridors, while in the streets below countless pilgrims eagerly anticipate benediction. This was Avignon’s brief golden age when it was truly the centre of Christendom. Later you’re free to explore as you wish, perhaps visiting the nearby Petit Palais, the former home of the archbishops of Avignon, to cast a critical eye over the remarkable collection of over 300 paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, including works by Botticelli and Carpaccio.
Pont du Gard
After lunch back on board we visit the amazing Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct, one of the best-preserved Roman constructions and wonders of the ancient world against a superb backdrop of pine and cypress-covered hills. No amount of fame can diminish the first sight of this 2,000-year-old structure, which was the highest bridge built in the Empire – the Romans themselves considered it the most important testimony to their greatness. Its statistics are staggering: over 900 feet long and almost 160 feet high, with its stones each weighing up to six tons. To put this in perspective, the span of the Pont du Gard is greater than the width of the River Thames at London Bridge – and no mortar was used in its construction!
We continue to Uzès, one of the most charming cities in the south of France, famed for its local produce and bustling textile markets. On arrival we enjoy a walking tour, strolling through the shady cobbled streets of its old town, a delightfully car-free zone, whilst admiring the pale limestone buildings with their characterful shutters and elegant wrought iron balconies. See the impressive cathedral with its quirky Pisa-like tower, contemporary artwork and ancient, intricate stained glass. Built on the site of a Roman camp, visit the Duke’s Palace with its imposing Renaissance facades, turrets and ramparts, wealth of fine art, furniture and a cellar stocked with fine champagne. Uzès became the first Duchy of France in 1632 and the present Duke and Duchess still spend the summer here. Climb the tower to enjoy panoramic views of the olive groves, garrigue and vineyards.
This evening our ship sets sail once more, arriving in Arles later tonight.
Guided tour of Avignon, visit the Pont du Gard & walking tour of Uzès.
Arles & Les Baux-de-Provence
You awake under the azure skies of deepest Provence and amid the warm stone colours of Arles, many of whose historic monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Albeit small, it was the key stronghold on the Roman road to Spain, one of the empire’s richest possessions. Seagoing ships could reach the city and it became a regional capital, briefly ruling over Gaul, Spain and Britain. Our guided tour will help you appreciate the finer points of Arles’s magnificent Roman remains, including the splendid amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the world, the earlier theatre built during the reign of Augustus and the Alyscamps, the ancient necropolis with its extraordinary atmosphere.
The disturbed but great genius and artist Van Gogh lived in Arles for just over a year, from February 1888. It was his most prolific period and, inspired by Arles and the light and beauty of the Provençal countryside, he produced around 300 works, including The Night Café, The Sower and, of course, Sunflowers.
Les Baux-de-Provence
After lunch we take a scenic drive to the picturesque village of Les Baux-de-Provence located in the Alpilles mountains, spectacularly sited atop a rocky outcrop, a cluster of stone-built houses, bright terracotta roofs, ancient churches and fine public buildings terracing the hillside in the shadow of the ruins of its medieval castle. Awash with architectural treasures at every turn, it’s a delight to wander its cobbled streets soaking up the ambience of times gone by. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of this typically Provençal landscape, surrounded by vineyards, twisted age-old olive and cypress trees. We visit an authentic olive oil farm to learn more about the production of this versatile store-cupboard staple and end our visit with a delicious and unforgettable tasting of olive oil accompanied by local specialities.
Our ship remains moored in Arles overnight and after dinner we enjoy an Arlesian dance and musical performance.
Guided tour of Arles, a visit to Les Baux-de-Provence and an Olive Oil farm & an Arlesian dance and musical performance.
Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, Camargue & Ornithological Park
Camargue & Ornithological Park
During this morning’s breakfast our magnificent vessel glides into Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, located at the mouth of the great Rhône, between the river and the sea, and surrounded by the unique wilderness of the Camargue.
The Parc naturel régional de Camargue fringing the shoreline of the Camargue, has been a protected wetland and marine area since 1970. Few areas of France are as distinctive, fascinating or inspirational as this area of outstanding natural beauty with its remote and beautiful Mediterranean beaches and grassy dunes, where the mistral blows across sun-baked prairies strewn with the blue-flowers of fragrant sea lavender, and salt-marshes, ponds and lagoons teeming with wildlife stretch as far as the eye can see. Famed for its wild horses, black bulls and birdlife, it’s a paradise for birdwatchers as well as a spectacular place to enjoy a host of other sporting activities from cycling, hiking and pony-trekking.
During spring and autumn, the park's wetlands are a major staging point for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds and we enjoy a tour into this unique landscape with a visit to the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau to observe and learn more about the colonies of bird species, including the famed pink flamingos, who have made their home here.
Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer
Later we drive to the bustling seaside town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the capital of Camargue. On arrival we have a short orienteering tour of the main sights – the Notre Dame de la Mer, a fine Romanesque church dating from the 9th century and the old town hall followed by some free time to wander before returning to the ship for lunch. Spend a lazy afternoon on board enjoying the scenery. After dinner is served retire to the bar as we arrive at Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Guided tour of Camargue with visit to the Ornithological Park & Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Orange & Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Orange & Châteauneuf-du-Pape
After breakfast we take a scenic drive into the heart of the Rhône Valley, savouring the views of its vineyard draped landscape, dotted with the occasional sleepy hamlet. We firstly arrive in the Roman city of Orange located on the ancient Agrippa Road and a historically important trading post. This charming ‘City of Princes’ is home to two magnificent and unmissable UNESCO monuments: the mighty Triumphal Arch and the Roman theatre – the world’s best preserved ancient theatre. Built in the 1st century AD, gaze in awe at its exceptional state and huge back wall towering an incredible 37 metres with columns and a statue of the Emperor Augustus still intact. You’ll be transported back in time as you imagine all the spectacles that would have taken place in this ancient spot.
Next we take a panoramic drive through the stunning and world-renowned region of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The region’s vineyards are prized the world over and there will be a photo stop before we arrive in the magical village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, spectacularly sited on a hill, an island rising from a sea of vines. There can be few places in the world that lives and breathes the cultivation, vinification and sale of wine as deeply as this unique Provençal village. Its cobbled streets are awash with wine shops and cellars at every turn in which you can taste the legendary wine. Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the first wine-growing area to receive an appellation contrôlée and wines bearing the name must meet the strictest conditions.
The pebbly soil covered in small stones that absorb the abundant sunshine during the day warms the grapes at night and the resultant red and white wines are rich and full-bodied. We enjoy a delectable wine tasting in one of the region’s finest wineries before driving back to the ship for lunch.
We continue our journey upstream to return to the starting point of our cruise, Lyon. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on board as we sail through the Rhône Valley once more, so catch up on a spot of reading in the ship’s library, book yourself in for a little pampering in the spa, or simply enjoy the views from the sun deck before tonight's dinner awaits.
Guided tour of Orange & wine tasting.
Start the day with a leisurely breakfast and why not take that second cup of tea up on deck and enjoy the river breeze as the delightful scenery slips by. We’ve a morning’s sailing ahead so there’s time to enjoy one last visit to the fitness area or perhaps make an appointment at the hairdresser’s for a last minute pamper before we make our stately final approach into Lyon just before lunch is served.
Spend your final afternoon enjoying time at leisure exploring the city. Perhaps visit one of the superb museums – catering for all tastes from cinema buffs to fine art lovers, and for a superb view over the rooftops try the Musée de Confluence with its fascinating evolutionary exhibits depicting the story of life and earth. Or stroll the vast and glorious park, a true green haven at the heart of the city, with its zoo, botanical garden and magnificent lake with plenty of scope for wildlife spotting. There’s a spot of shopping to be had around the Place Bellecour whilst admiring the elegant facades - typical Lyonnais pralines make the perfect gift for friends back home! Or simply wander the old town and its characterful traboules, stopping to enjoy a refreshing drink and delicious pastry at a pavement café whilst soaking up the atmosphere of this refined and historic city.
Tonight, there’s another culinary highlight – the Chef’s Dinner, when the chef prepares his superb ‘signature’ dishes for you to enjoy in the splendid surroundings of the ship’s restaurant, with a chance to reflect on the fascinating places you have discovered, poignant stories you have heard and the new friends you have made.

What the Trip is Like
This cruise is rated Level 1, Easiest , and is appropriate for anyone in good health who is physically active. Daily shore excursions require a moderate amount of walking, often along uneven cobblestone streets and up and down stairs. To better accommodate guests and their individual fitness levels, AMA Waterways programs provide several levels of walking tours whenever possible: "Gentle Walkers" are designed for slower walkers to enjoy the tour in a relaxed manner, "Active Walkers" enjoy the tours at a normal pace, and there is also a "Late Starters" group offered to guests who prefer to sleep in.
Staterooms range from 160-350 square feet (depending on category), and typical hotel room amenities include hair dryer, bathrobe, television, and mini-safe. Every stateroom has individually controlled air conditioning, internet access, wi-fi (free throughout the ship!) and a movie-on-demand system that offers a variety of English language channels, films and music options. Most staterooms have balconies, either walk-on or French, but lower categories just have fixed windows or portholes.
AMA is known for its efforts to bring in regional cuisine, which is always fun as you explore new countries and cultures. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style with made-to-order specialties. Dinner is multi-course. Every lunch and dinner includes free-flowing regional wines as well as complimentary beer and soft drinks. Bottled water, specialty teas, and coffees are always available free of charge. All ships have an open seating policy in the main restaurant to encourage you to meet your fellow travelers.
On Board AMA Riverboats
AMA Waterways specializes in high-end river journeys that navigate some of Europe's most famous waterways. Their ships accommodate approximately 150 passengers in comfortable staterooms, all with scenic views. While this might sound like a lot of travelers compared to Wilderness Travel's traditional small group trips, it's a modest number of passengers in the cruise ship world and there are a number of comfortable lounges, dining rooms, bars, and sitting areas on board for you to find a perfect spot to socialize or quietly relax, depending on your mood.
There is a warm and welcoming feel to all AMA cruises. From the moment you step onboard, you will be welcomed by crew, staff, and leaders who are friendly, professional and English speaking. There is a high staff to guest ratio (1:3) that assures a feeling of being well-taken-care-of at all times. Your fellow passengers will come from a variety of English-speaking countries and guests tend to mingle freely. No need to bring fancy clothes as the atmosphere onboard is casual, although guests do tend to dress up for the Captain's dinner.
Daily shore excursions are included in the cost of the cruise, along with free time to explore on your own. Each tour is led by a qualified, local guide. At many stops, you'll be free to choose from one of several options. Complimentary headset systems ensure that you hear every word of your tour. AMA ships carry more than two dozen bicycles and helmets, free of charge, for your use should you want to venture into the countryside.
There is a reception desk onboard that is open 24 hours a day with somebody available to help you, should you need it. All announcements and lectures will be presented in English as the clientele is mainly North American, Australian, and European. All AMA cruises prohibit smoking inside their ships. Smoking is only permitted outside on the sun deck.
Electricity on board all ships is 220v, with 2-pin power outlets. You will need an adapter, and/or converter depending on which electrical appliances you bring with you. There are no medical facilities on board although if medical services are needed, they can easily be called from shore. Laundry services are available for a fee.
All ships are equipped with either a whirlpool or a small, heated swimming pool. If you think you might want to use this, be sure to pack a swimsuit!
Tips are not included in the price of the cruise, and are entirely at your discretion. The recommended rate suggested is 3 Euros per passenger per day to the Cruise Manager and 12 Euros per passenger per day to the crew, which will be divided up and distributed. You can use your credit card for this expense. It is also customary to acknowledge a particularly good performance of a local guide by leaving a tip of 1-2 Euros per tour.
Wilderness Travel enjoys partnering with AMA Waterways because they offer a high quality product with thoughtfully planned itineraries, allowing travelers to experience Europe's most glorious architecture, medieval castles, historic villages, and idyllic countryside with minimal effort. Since these trips are relatively short, you may consider this as part of a longer, European adventure!

Trip Levels
With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.
