Editors’ Choice: Overland Trailers

Overland trailers have only grown in popularity in recent years. If you think about it, it makes sense why. You can keep an off-road trailer packed with your gear, so you only need to stock the fridge before hitting the trails. Plus, they make a great basecamp. If you like to enjoy a campsite for a few days, or longer, but you still want to explore in your rig, a trailer is an excellent option.

Lastly, an overland trailer is a great way to use your daily driver as your adventure rig without the need to add a tent, tools, fridge, and more to take it into the backcountry. Your outfitted trailer can take care of those necessities, and your daily driver can just worry about getting you and the trailer out on the trail.

There are a few things to keep in mind when considering a trailer. First, take a look at your vehicle’s towing capacity, and stay on the conservative side of that weight rating. Secondly, decide what type of trailer is best for you. Do you need a fully enclosed unit, or can you get by with a trailer that has a tent on top? Is an on-board fridge a must, or will the camp stove route work for your travels?

There are tons of options on the market. We’ve gathered some of our favorites across a broad range of trailer models to help you decide what is best for your backcountry travels. Here they are in alphabetical order.

Escapod — Topo 2

The Topo 2 Escapod takes the classic teardrop trailer design to the next level with a sleek exterior and smart interior design. The Topo 2 cabin is constructed from a single piece of high-density polyethylene, and honeycomb composite with CNC-cut interior panels. All of this is mounted on a laser-cut 2 x 1-inch tube steel frame that accepts bolt-on accessories like rock rails, steps, and extra receiver tubes. With a dry-weight of just under 2000 lbs., the Topo 2 is towable by a wide range of vehicles.

Inside you’ll find a 6-inch thick queen-sized memory foam mattress situated under a 2.5 x 5-foot stargazer window. 

At the rear of the trailer, the galley kitchen features a full-size sink, an ENO two-burner stove, and space for a large cooler or fridge. With 7.5 cu. ft. of storage space that includes a hidden knife drawer, a spice drawer, and modular shelving, you can take along everything you need to be well-fed in camp. The Topo 2 also features 21 gallons of water carrying capacity within the trailer. 

All of this is powered by a 100 amp-hour VPR 4EVER lithium battery 12V system that runs throughout the trailer. With dimmable LED lighting in the cabin and galley and ground lights next to the step, you’ll never be without power or stumbling around the trailer at night relying on your headlamp. Of course, there are also USB ports in the galley and interior of the trailer to keep your devices charged. The MaxxAir exhaust fan keeps the cabin comfortable in warmer climates.

Kimberley Kampers — RLT Edition

Kimberley Kampers are well known for their compact and durable designs that unfold to provide ample living space while out on the trail. The RLT Edition sleeps up to eight people and provides 1,500 liters of storage. With a base weight of 2,531 lbs. and a maximum trailer capacity of 5,500 lbs., you can carry enough supplies and equipment for an extended stay without worrying about where it will all fit. With options for sleeping two, four, or eight, the interior layout is left up to the end user.

In terms of water, the RLT has the ability to carry gallons of water, plus additional jerry cans. This pairs well with the included shower that is warmed via a diesel heater, and it features a zip-on privacy screen and a hard-drying floor. 

It’s easy to see why the Kimberley Kampers are trusted by experience off-roaders from around the world. They contain an incredible amount of sleeping space and capability in a relatively small package.

Lifestyle Campers — Reconn R2 Elite

Lifestyle Campers are a very new addition to the US overland trailer scene, and we expect they’ll make a big splash. With a unique automatic pop-top design and clever design packed into every feature, the Reconn trailer is very impressive. The outdoor kitchen has plenty of storage and work surfaces to prepare homestyle meals in the backcountry.

On the opposite side, you’ll find a huge amount of storage for all of your gear. The interior of the camper features excellent fit and finish and sleeping space for two adults and one child. A look under the trailer proves it is meant for off-road travel. There’s zero exposed plumbing, wiring, or other delicate bits to be damaged while traveling over rough terrain.

The Reconn Elite 2 features a quick and hassle free set-up with push button actuators. The kitchen features a three burner stove, a folding glass top, and a stainless steel sink. Plus, the kitchen features plenty of counter space, and all of this is built to be as rugged and dependable as the rest of the camper.

Underneath a coil spring trailing arm suspension smooths out the bumps of even the roughest trails. Optional rock sliders will protect the Reconn Elite 2 when you hit a narrow spot. Overall this excellent offering from Lifestyle provides comfort, convenience, and capability that will surely keep hitting the trails for decades to come.

Mammoth Overland Trailers 

Mammoth Overland Trailers are built by a talented team with experience in the aerospace industry using some of the same materials and designs found in airplanes. They also include instant hot water, a fridge, a toilet, and a shower in their base package. 

All of your power needs are met with the included 100aH AGM Deep Cycle Battery and a 1kW True Sine wave inverter so it’s solar ready to power all of your device and lighting needs. 

However, this is not to say that Mammoth’s trailers are simple. The swingout kitchen provides easy access to food, storage, and a double-burner stove. There’s also plenty of storage for the included toilet, privacy screen, and all off your backcountry equipment.

With 19-inches of ground clearance and 31-inch BFGoodrich K02 tires riding on the tried and tested Timbren 3500 HD Independent Suspension, the Mammoth Overland Trailer can handle tough trails with ease.

Off Grid — Pando 2.0

The Off Grid Trailers Pando 2.0 is an all-metal teardrop trailer. With up to 24 inches of ground clearance, when optioned with the OGT Evolution Series Suspension by Fabtech Motorsports, this may be the most off-road capable teardrop trailer on the market.

The traditional rear galley kitchen includes a 57L fridge, dual burner stove, custom-designed sink, stainless steel countertop, and an abundant amount of storage. By including the second fridge in the front box, you can option the Pando 2.0 to include 126L of fridge and freezer space!

The integrated roof rack is rated to carry a 1,000 lbs static load. With storage and durability in mind, the Pando 2.0 may be the ultimate off-road teardrop.

Opus Camper — Op-4

Tents on top of overland trailers aren’t necessarily groundbreaking, but the tent on top of the Op-4 isn’t your usual tent. This tent uses the latest air beam technology to support the tent structure and inflates at the touch of a button in 12 seconds. 

Outside of this nearly instantaneous setup, the Op-4 also features a Dometic Coolcat AC and Heat Pump rated at 10,000 BTU, a 16,000 BTU Dometic Propane Furnace, the OPUS Cinema System, hot water, dimmable LED lighting, and the ability to sleep six. 

The Op-4 is designed to keep your group out longer with 40 gallons of on-board water, three to four days of battery life that can be supplemented by solar, and a 20-pound propane tank.

The outdoor kitchen has everything you need to feed your group. It features an ARB 63-quart fridge-freezer, a four-burner stainless slide-out stove, wind guards, a dish rack with LED exterior lighting, and a sink with on-demand hot water. 

All of this ride on a Dual Axle Trailing Arm Suspension with dual coil shock absorbers. The frame is made of galvanized steel with integrated rock rails. The Op-4 is outfitted with 265/75/R15 mud terrains and a matching spare. If you’re looking for an adventure-ready trailer that can sleep your whole family, this model from Opus is a great option.

Patriot Campers — X1

The X1 from Patriot Campers is designed to be a backcountry base camp for two to eight travelers. With a beefy suspension, excellent off-road capability, and a feature-rich design, the X1 is a great option for a ready-roll overland camper.  

The X1 is designed to be packed, prepped, and ready to go. Once you arrive at your camping destination, the X1 takes less than 10 minutes to set up, and that includes the optional kids’ room. With a Redarc Manager 30, gas hot water heater, 155L water tank capacity, and 2 x Gel or AGM Batteries, you can easily extend your backcountry stay.

The large L-shaped kitchen features slide-out shelving, a built-in spice rack, a large sink with hot and cold water, a Dometic stove, stainless steel bench tops, large storage drawers, and an optional swing-away platform.

TAXA — Cricket Overland

TAXA makes some of the most interesting trailers on the market, and their naming scheme is pretty slick as well. The Cricket is a hybrid trailer that incorporates a pop-top and a smart design to create a spacious trailer that doesn’t feel huge behind your rig. 

With an overall length of 15 feet and a dry weight of 1,800 lbs, the Crickett can fit two adults plus two children with the optional berths. The kitchen cabinets are mounted at the forward of the interior space and pack plenty of features into a seemingly small package. 

The full-size bed features under-bed storage, and it transforms into a nice dinette area. And while the Cricket might seem small, the kitchen features a two-burner stove, a covered sink, and modular storage. 

The Crickett is spacious enough but still lightweight, and it’s an excellent option for all kinds of adventure rigs. A Subaru Outback has nearly twice the towing capacity required to bring this TRAXA along on backcountry trips, leaving plenty of room to add gear and supplies to the loadout.

Turtleback Trailers — Adventure Trailer

Not all tent trailers are designed for a couple of overlanders. This new offering from Turtleback sleeps five or more, and that’s not even close to the only innovation included in this model. 

The Airlift air ride suspension is remote-controlled to allow for on the fly adjustments to the ride. When you’re ready to stop for the night, the Cruisemaster Hitch and handbrake keep the trailer secure and in place. With the two-inch rear receiver hitch, you can bring along your bike rack or other accessories with ease. 

The Gordigear Trailer Top Tent expands to provide room to sleep five or more and plenty of room for everyone to hang out if the weather turns sour. 

The Adventure Trailer is also equipped with an AGM battery, a seven-pin connection, a rear charging port, aluminum storage boxes, and more.

Xpedition Trailers — Voyager

The first thing that jumps out to you when checking out the Voyager Camper Trailer is the massive kitchen, especially in relation to the size of the trailer. Dinner can become a group project with plenty of space to have multiple chefs in the kitchen, thanks to the clever use of multiple slides and plenty of storage. Expedition Trailers advertises that three adults can work in the kitchen simultaneously, and we believe it. The whole setup is close to twice the width of the trailer’s frame. 

Up top, you’ll find a unique roof rack that follows the contours of the Voyager and allows the mounting of cargo cases and a rooftop tent. You can access the interior through dual side doors. Inside, a LED-lit sleeping area provides 130 cubic feet of usable space, and it’s outfitted with a mattress that folds into a couch, a fan, and plenty of storage. 

Overall the Voyager provides everything you need in an overland camper that can fit down tight and technical trails.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

An affordable off-road-capable overlanding trailer is an investment in adventure.  Set up in the backcountry or a primitive campground, the right off-road trailer or teardrop camper can take your outdoor experience to new levels of enrichment. Days filled with outdoor exploration, nights spent under star-filled skies, and some of the basic comforts of civilization are just a few of the rewards offered by a camping trailer with off-road chops.

Starting with a budget of under $10,000, we curated a collection of traditional camping trailers and teardrop-style camping trailers. These trailers will move your off-road and overlanding journeys up a notch or two.

Off-Road Camper Trailers Under $10,000

Hiker trailers mid-range xl off-road.

With four models to choose from, Hiker Trailers builds a compact camping trailer for every level of adventure. The quartet of capable Hiker off-road trailers runs from the Highway Deluxe ($5,999) meant for smooth dirt and gravel roads to the fully capable go-anywhere Extreme Off Road ($14,999).

One of our favorites is the Hiker Trailers Mid-Range XL Off-Road ($9,699). Designed for moderate off-roading on rugged dirt and gravel roads, the Hiker Mid-Range XL Off-Road trailer’s many features include a 3,500-pound-rated torsion suspension axle, two rear stabilizer jacks, and steel diamond plate fenders.

Exterior dimensions on the basic 5×8-foot trailer are 94 inches long, 58 inches wide, and 44 inches high. The Mid-Range XL can also be built on a 5×9-foot or 5×10-foot floor plan. A 3,500-pound-capacity torsion axle, 2-inch frame lift, and 16-inch aluminum wheels with 31.5-inch tires provide the Hiker Trailers Mid-Range XL Off-Road with elevated off-road capabilities.

Manley ORV Explore

Manley ORV Trailers builds the closest thing you can find to a military M416 jeep trailer and traces its design and construction heritage back to the famous WW II-era K-38 Jeep trailers. The Manley ORV Explore ($9,995) model off-road trailer will effortlessly follow you out to your favorite remote campsite and is our choice for the best “trailer-top tent” model in the Manley ORV Trailer line.

The Manley ORV Explore off-road trailer is based on the company’s 14-gauge steel tub with a 1/8-inch-thick steel floor. The Explore weighs 775 pounds and has a load capacity of 2,000 pounds. It has all the basic attributes of the cargo-focused Manley ORV Original and Utility trailers, plus some of the comfort features of its bigger brother, the Basecamp trailer.

Standard issue equipment on the Manley ORV Explore includes an independent torsion axle, lockable aluminum lid, one-hand-close tailgate, a tall trailer rack system, and a rooftop tent. A 2-inch ball coupler and 31-inch off-road tires are also standard.

Oregon Trailer DoDrop

The Oregon Trailer DoDrop ($8,500) is the company’s most affordable of its teardrop trailer models and a good choice for the backcountry traveler. The DoDrop is made from high-grade materials and sits on a steel tube frame, but it’s light enough (550 pounds) to be easily towed by almost any small car or CUV.

The trailer’s body dimensions are 4 feet wide, 3.5 feet tall, and 7 feet long. It offers plenty of sleeping room with a bed length of 78 inches and an interior width of 47 inches. Two 26×32-inch trailer doors make entry and egress easy. Jeep-style fenders keep road debris off the trailer, and custom rack and electrical options are available.

For a teardrop trailer that can truly stand up to the rigors of off-roading, Oregon Trailer’s DoDrop Alpha ($13,250) is prepared for the worst with a reinforced tubular steel chassis and 1,400-pound capacity long-travel independent torsion system.

Among the many options available, the DoDrop can be equipped with a chuck box/camp kitchen, making it a comfortable mini-cabin on wheels for a cozy weekend away or a long cross-country adventure.

Timberleaf Trailers Kestral

The Kestrel ($8,750) is the most affordable camping trailer in the Timberleaf Trailer line and the company’s lightest and most compact teardrop model. If you are looking for a minimalist camping trailer, the Kestrel is a good choice. Unlike Timberleaf’s Pika and Classic models, the Kestrel doesn’t have a rear-access hatch, a galley, built-in power, or a skylight.

However, the Kestrel does come standard with an insulated ceiling, aluminum roof and sides, LED cabin lights, LED running and taillights, interior cabinets, a 6-inch mattress, and two 26×36-inch doors with vented windows. You also get pre-wiring for future electrical power system upgrades and a 2-inch receiver hitch in the rear for bike racks .  

If you want to spend a little more, you can get your Kestrel upgraded with the All-Road package or the Off-Road package. The All-Road options add provide up to 17 inches of ground clearance, heavy-duty suspension, and 30-inch tires.

With up to 23 inches of ground clearance. The Off-Road package makes the Kestrel into an off-road beast with a 4-inch lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires , and aluminum diamond plate Jeep-style fenders with integrated steps.

Off-Road Campers & Teardrops Under $15,000

Tentrax trailers ascend.

The Tentrax Ascend off-road trailer is a great choice for those looking for something lightweight, affordable ($11,995), and easy to tow behind your Jeep or whatever 4×4 you use for your off-grid adventures. Weighing in at just 600 pounds, the Tentrax Ascend trailer has a powder-coated steel frame, reinforced fiberglass body, and a pop-up tent made from water-resistant ripstop poly cotton that’s also UV- and mold-resistant.

Moderate off-road capability comes in the form of a 1,800-pound-capacity Dexter Torflex torsion axle, and 30-inch off-road tires wrapped around steel wheels . Other standard equipment includes a 48×96-inch bed with foam padding, a frame-mounted front rack, a roof rack mounted to the lid, a hitch ball towing attachment, a four-pin trailer wiring harness, and a heavy-duty removable jack stand. 

Available options for the Tentrax Ascend off-road trailer are numerous. Standouts are an off-road ready Timbren axle-less suspension, a 12V electrical package (two 12V outlets, deep cycle battery, and battery box), and an electric trailer brake system. For those hardcore off-road enthusiasts, there is also an Off-Road Articulation Package that gets you an articulating hitch, trailer tongue extension, and an extended wiring harness.

TC Teardrops Overland

Teardrop-style trailers became popular in the ’50s and ’60s and have seen a remarkable revival among buyers in the last decade or so. TC Teardrops Trailers produces several models that are modern-day versions of these classic and easy-to-tow trailers.

The most basic is the Oasis model. On the top end of the scale is the TC Teardrop Off-Road Expedition, which has all the bells and whistles, and a price to go with them. Our favorite in the line is the Overland ($10,100 for the 4×8-foot floorplan). The Overland comes in five sizes, from the smallest version at 4×8 feet to the largest model at 5×10 feet.

Typical features on TC Teardrops’ Overland are the sleeping room for two, 12V accessory outlets, LED lighting, and a front storage platform. A choice of three different galley styles depends upon the trailer footprint size you choose, but all offer a rear galley with shelves and a slide-out table. The Overland model also gets electric trailer brakes, a 2,000-pound capacity torsion axle, and an articulating hitch.

Bivouac Camping Trailers Fort

The Fort overlanding trailer ($10,995) from Bivouac Camping Trailers is packed with features that make it a top choice for off-road camping enthusiasts. Nearly 40 cubic feet of cargo space and the option of a cargo rack or rooftop tent mounted to the upper deck make the Fort off-road trailer a versatile overlanding companion.

The Fort trailer’s powder-coated steel tube frame sits on a 2,500-pound capacity torsion axle, with 10-inch electric brakes, steel wheels, and 31-inch tires. Standards include goodies like a basic top cargo tray, side steps, LED brake lights, and side marker lights.

Available accessories are nearly endless. Some of our top option picks would be the Rotopax fluid and storage containers, an LP gas bottle rack, upgraded shock absorbers, and the body lift that allows the fitment of 33-inch off-road tires.

SylvanSport GO Camping Trailer

SylvanSport builds lightweight trailers for the backcountry explorer. Its GO Camping Trailer ($14,495) weighs just 840 pounds and has a metal tube structure rather than the more common hard-side off-road camping trailer design. The magic of this trailer’s design is its versatility. The Go Camping Trailer can convert from a pop-up tent trailer to a cargo trailer to a bike trailer within a few minutes.

The SylvanSport GO Camping Trailer can be optioned out for more rugged travel with off-road favorable features like a larger wheel and tire combo that help deliver increased ground clearance. With sleeping room for four adults and a center-standing room of 6 feet 5 inches, the trailer is easy to live in. Somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife , the GO Trailer can be folded tight and low for travel or expanded to bloom into a full-size tent with beds and standing room.

Off-Road Adventure Trailer Under $20,000

Schutt xventure xv-3 trailer.

The XVenture XV-3 Trailer ($17,925) from Schutt Industries is one of the recreational overlanding trailer products from a company that also manufactures industrial and military-grade cargo handling equipment. The company’s experience in these highly demanding fields has helped it create the XVenture line of off-road camping trailers.

The XVenture XV-3 offers all-aluminum construction, a front-wheel jack, rear stabilizer jacks, three-piece step-style fenders, and a power distribution center wired with fused switchable supply ports. It also has a swing-away tailgate and integrated galley table, a 110V exterior power receptacle, and cargo-bed-mounted 12V receptacles. The Schutt XVenture XV-3 trailer is one of our favorites in the upper end of the affordable off-road camping trailer category.

For the DIY Builder

For the off-road trailer buyer looking for a DIY project, here’s a great way to start that custom build you’ve got in mind from a company that builds and sells some very nice high-end off-road camping trailers. The Boreas Chassis ($6,500) is just that — a ready-to-roll off-road chassis that offers a clean sheet to work from.

The Boreas Campers Chassis delivers a powder-coated steel subframe and a 3,500-pound capacity trailing arm suspension system with dual shocks and heavy-duty coil springs. An articulating hitch coupler with handbrake, electric drum brakes, and off-road tires and wheels provide the ability to easily handle rough off-road terrain.

Front and rear 2-inch receiver hitches, a seven-pin trailer wiring harness, a main chassis electrical harness, taillights, and red and orange marker lights are also part of the standard equipment package on the Boreas Chassis. The options list could add fenders, spare tire and mount, a toolbox, rear leveling jacks, and a 30-gallon freshwater tank to your Boreas Chassis order. But, the rest of the trailer build is up to your imagination.

Off-road camper trailers are, in a word, wonderful. They can offer you the mobile campsite you want, whether that’s minimalist gear storage and a tent mount or a full-service affair bringing along many of the comforts of home.

Fitted with all-terrain suspensions and all-terrain tires , they’re equipped to follow your Jeep Gladiator , Toyota 4Runner or other overlanding vehicle anywhere you want to go. But parsing your way through the countless options in the off-road travel trailer world can be a bit arduous — so we’ve pulled together this list of the top trailers for living in once you’ve taken that turn off the paved road.

The Best Off-Road Camping Trailers

• Length: 12.7 ft
• Dry Weight: 1,750 lbs

Overlanding is about communing with nature, but burning a bunch of fuel for power, heating and cooking feels antithetical to that pursuit. Colorado Campworks has resolved this conundrum with their popular trailer, the Nomadic System One (also known as the NS-1). It’s 100 percent solar-powered — with up to 11,000 watts of battery storage — but still offers all of the comforts and amenities one would expect from a quality trailer, including badass off-road capability.

• Length: 13.5 feet
• Dry Weight: 1,920 lbs

The Topo2 is Escapod’s four-season off-road teardrop trailer. It’s built from a composite fiberglass monocoque that’s lightweight, durable and eliminates wood underpinnings that would leave the trailer susceptible to mold. Its proprietary freeride independent suspension system offers up to five inches of travel on each wheel. And it has a nifty “mudroom” perch with space to remove dirty footwear and wet jackets.

• Dry Weight: 5,159 lbs

Sacrifice doesn’t have to be part of the off-road trailering experience. The Opus OP-15 sleeps four and cleverly fits all the comforts of home, including a hot shower, a large fridge and freezer and air conditioning, into a footprint that’s smaller than an Airstream Bambi . With a galvanized and welded stainless steel chassis and a trailing arm suspension with dual shock absorbers, the OP-15 can withstand pretty much anything Mother Nature can throw at you.

• Sleeps: 2/3 (with rooftop tent)

The Taxa Outdoors Woolly Bear trailer would make this list based on the name alone. It’s super lightweight at 1,270 pounds, meaning it can be towed by a base-engine Subaru Outback . It’s also versatile, accommodating a full-sized camping kitchen, ample gear storage and most two- or three-person rooftop tents . Options include a mosquito net room and a propane package, as well.

Sadly, Black Series off-road trailers have nothing to do with those super-hot AMG models , but don’t hold that against them. This originally-Australian brand creates all-terrain trailers that are tough as nails on the outside — packing steel armor, independent suspension and a 360-degree-rotating hitch — yet offer Airstream-like comfort and luxury inside. With both pop-top and full-height models ranging from 20 to 26 feet long, there’s a Black Series for just about everyone.

Setting up a tent while you’re traveling by side-by-side can be annoying and time-consuming. Nevada-based Sunnyside Offroad has a solution: the Boony Stomper . It offers few frills, but it weighs just 600 pounds (depending on options), allowing it to be towed by pretty much any vehicle, including a UTV. Plus, it’s specially designed not to impede trail performance, thanks to a custom long-travel suspension and hard-walled, aluminum-sided construction

The Sierra ZR is a pared-down version of Australian Off-Road’s mobile bunker-like Sierra trailer . It offers pretty much maximum versatility, enabling you to turn it into whatever you want: it can be a fully outfitted mobile campsite with a tent platform, a well-equipped kitchen, fridge and barbecue setup, awnings and even a shower — or, it can simply be a stripped-out rig to store your gear. And with a departure angle of 40.7, it can follow your off-roader pretty much anywhere.

Rooftop tent or rooftop cargo box ? Signature partnered with Toytuf to offer both. There’s additional gear storage on the roof with a full-length storage cage. This cage can hold loose items like firewood or unwieldy items. You can also remove the front and rear doors to create a pass-through for surfboards or a kayak. A Signature or third-party rooftop tent can then mount above the storage cage. You can also choose an awning to add as an option.

What to Look for When Buying an Off-Road Camping Trailer

What factors should you consider when buying an off-road trailer? We decided to consult the experts and spoke to Chris and Jen Hudak, the co-founders of Escapod , to give us their rundown of the basic factors buyers should look at.

Ground Clearance

The trailer must be able to surmount the obstacles you put in front of it. Not having enough ground clearance will be a limiting factor. “The first thing I’d look at in an off-road camper is the off-road trail conditions you want to achieve,” Chris says. “How high does the trailer have to be off the ground?”

Proper Off-Road Suspension

The second thing Chris and Jen would look at is the suspension. They state that a “broad spectrum” of suspensions would be classified as off-road. Not all of them are optimized for the weight of the trailer. They opted to build their own freeride suspension for the Topo2 .

“It’s an independent suspension with a coil over design,” Chris says. “And that was because what we realized is that if we can give you a more enjoyable towing experience you can go to further places and you can be less hard on the trailer itself”

Weight factors in two ways. The first is meeting the weight limit for the tow vehicle. “Can your tow vehicle tow it to where it needs to go,” Chris states. A lot of off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler deliver ample capability but are limited on what they can tow vs. more specialized trucks.

The other is the amenities. You can have a super-light trailer, but the trade off is that it may not have all of the features you want. Striking that balance is going to be up to the customer. “That’s where you end up in that mobility versus firepower kind of battle,” Jen says. “What makes sense for the customer in terms of what experience they want?”

Length is a major consideration. It’s a factor on trail. More compact trailers are going to be more maneuverable. “Some of these longer trailers can’t do a u-turn on a trail or a forest service road,” Chris says. It’s also a factor when you come back from the trail. Chris and Jen wanted the TOPO2 to fit in a standard seven-foot garage, and it features a removable coupler to help achieve that.

Ease of Use

Setup time is a major factor, both when you’re arriving at a camp site and packing up to head home. A shell with a tent attached may be cheaper. A more utilitarian trailer will have a tent attached and a lot of moving parts. More premium options won’t require as much time and effort. A goal with the Topo2’s design was to minimize that effort.

“We started Escapod because we were time-strapped people that wanted to go out for a quick weekend getaway and we didn’t want to deal with all of the setup,” Jen states. “We wanted to attach something to our vehicle and have everything ready to go.”

My experience with my 2023 221MDB Overland Series has been very positive – actually encouraging. There have been some minor issues, but that’s to be expected regardless the brand/model you purchase. The difference lies in the quality through an intentional design/manufacturing approach. This is quite evident in the ingenuity found in the Ember product. Second is how a manufacturer responds when there are issues, concerns or just questions. Ember gets an A+ here. I’m very happy with my Ember.

Purchased our Ember 191MSL in April 2023. Have traveled to Georgia, Tennessee, and 3 parks in Florida. The Ember has been great!! We have had no problems. We have had 5 in it at one time. It was full but not crowded. Love the “back room”! The fold away front bed is the best! The fridge gets cold quick and does a great job. Absolutely love the windows and how they work. Especially the Stargazer. Have about 5 years to retirement then we will really get going!! Maybe an upgrade? We shall see! Thanks!

When we decided to buy a travel trailer, we did extensive research. We also visited one of the largest RV shows in the country to compare models’ side by side. When all was said and done Ember RV was the clear winner. It has everything we need to make traveling more fun. It’s comfortable reliable refined and elegant inside and as rugged as can be outside. The game changer solar package on our Ember Overland 190MDB allows us to go places that previously would have been difficult. We love our Ember!

We have a 24BH. Very impressed with the chassis, suspension, and overall looks. My wife loves all the storage. We plan on using it a lot this spring!

We have had or 170MRB for over a year now. We have traveled thousands of miles with our camper. We searched for a long time for a camper that suited us; rugged, luxury, off-grid and big enough for someone over 6’2″. We tested and rented though the trailers we thought could work but ended up buying an ember after just a quick walk through. Never regretted our decision! We have an early module 22 with all the minor issues of a first module new build. Every issue has instantly been taken care of.

Have only had my 221MSL out a few times, and there have been some MINOR issues. However, when it was off road and hitting wicked ruts and my Ram was all over the place my EMBER was rolling like a cloud. Nothing in it was out of place. And every time I called in, the staff was very helpful, courteous, and prompt. Customer service is awesome which is 99% crucial in my book. Thank you.

I have enjoyed the first 2 outings with my 191MSL. It is great for towing and makes an awesome home away from home. Any concerns or issues that have come up have been well taken care of by either dealer or Ember directly. I bought a 2022 in October 23. I am a first-time owner and I am happy I went with Ember!

I’ve owned three trailers over the last five years, by far our Ember is the highest quality I’ve seen. After looking at the 26RB and seeing how well built they were, all the storage, the finish and extras it came with I was very impressed. From the 400w of solar, a 2000w inverter, even included a TPS system. The Showermi$er was something I hadn’t ever seen included in any of the other trailers we looked at. Katrina and I purchased our Micro Overland ROL way over a year ago, we took it cross country and back, we realized we needed something just a little bigger for our traveling needs. We now own a 190MSL … so buying two in just about a year says a lot about Ember, it’s an amazing product, awesome company, and really amazing people who work for Ember. P.S. we have our eye on a possible #3!

We bought a 221MSL in April 2023 and have been in love ever since. It is quite comfortable for a family of four with two dogs. It works well in every setting we have used it in, from full hookup sites to completely off grid. Towing and handling behind my Ram 2500 are flawless, and I barely notice it’s there. Located just minutes away from Stanley, Basin Butte Road is a stunning scenic trail that presents a myriad of captivating sights. Along the route, adventurers can find a historic fire lookout and an enchanting alpine lake perched at an impressive elevation exceeding 8,000 feet. The trail treats visitors to awe-inspiring vistas of the Sawtooth Mountains, with glimpses of Stanley Lake in the distance and the vast expanse of the Valley Creek plains. Once you arrive at the Historic Basin Butte Lookout, unobstructed panoramic views stretch for miles in all directions.

Continuing along the trail, Hindman Lake, an expansive 8-acre alpine lake, offers fishing, remote camping, and hiking amidst the pristine surroundings. Is This Custom Overlander for Charity the Ultimate Off-Road Lexus LX600 Build?

Big tires, a rooftop tent, loads of gear, and of course an off grid trailer get this rig deep into the backcountry..

F ounded in 2009, Overland Expo is the leading event series for do-it-yourself adventure travel enthusiasts. As the popularity of overland travel, or what we used to refer to as 'car camping,' has exploded, so has the Overland Expo series. More than 400 vendors and thousands of enthusiasts will descend on the mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona, over a three-day weekend for the kickoff event of the 2023 season.

Inspired by the amazing vehicle builds of its vendors and attendees, the folks at Overland Expo have set out to build what they consider to be the Ultimate Overland Vehicle. In 2021 it was a custom Toyota 4Runner , followed by the first customized GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X for 2022 . Now, for 2023, the folks at Overland Expo are ready to pull the wraps off of the latest build, a 2022 Lexus LX600 .

The 2022 Lexus LX600 was chosen in part because of its rugged body-on-frame platform, powerful 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged engine, luxurious cabin, and of course its famed Land Cruiser lineage. The LX600 is just slightly wider than a midsize pickup and sports a 112-inch wheelbase, which is slightly less than a Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. This makes the LX600 ideal for maneuvering down tight trails while also maximizing cargo carrying capacity. Still, there's always room for improvement. Let's dig into what makes this build the ultimate.

Improved Suspension Performance

The Lexus LX600, which is based on the global Land Cruiser platform, comes from the factory with a very robust set of off-road features. Complementing this capability, the team chose to add upper and lower front control arms along with rear links from Total Chaos Fabrication. Front and rear shocks and struts have been replaced by 2.5-inch diameter remote reservoir units from Radflow. The combination resulted in 2.5 inches of increased ride height along with improved suspension travel and articulation. The elevated suspension enabled the fitment of 33-inch Kenda Kelver R/T tires, which are wrapped around 17-inch Compression wheels from ICON Vehicle Dynamics.

Exterior Overland Accessories

The front of the LX600 has been transformed through the addition of an ARB Summit MKII bumper, behind which is a new SOLO Series 12.5 winch from Comeup. A pair of ARB's new Intensity IQ lights illuminate the trail ahead, while the Summit bumper also plays host to Midland Radio's new Bull Bar Antenna. The Lexus is further transformed by and all-new rear dual swing-out bumper by CBI Off-Road. This bumper carries the LX600's fullsize spare tire on one arm while the other holds a five-gallon Jerry can and set of traction boards.

Interior Camping, Cooking, and Communication Accouterments

What's stored inside is just as important as the exterior gear. Open the rear hatch and you'll find an impressive camp kitchen setup from Goose Gear. The company's new Ultimate Chef Package for LX600s also includes a Dometic CFX3 45 fridge freezer and has a custom crafted box from Mule Expedition Outfitters attached, which houses the vehicle's Smart BMS 12/100 auxiliary power management system from Victron Energy. A Midland MXT 575 GMRS radio keeps communication flowing, while off-road navigation is handled by the onX Off-Road Trail Maps app displayed through Apple CarPlay.

Meals prepared in the backcountry can be enjoyed on Tactical Tables and Chairs from Helinox. Additional water for drinking and washing is stored in a pair of Dometic Go Hydration Jugs and is utilized through a Dometic battery-powered water faucet.

Up On The Roof

If you've ever encountered an overland vehicle, you'll know that the roof is where it's at. Mounted to the roof rails is a first-of-its-kind Prinsu roof rack for the LX600. The rack holds the Armadillo A2 rooftop tent along with a Peregrine 270 awning, both from both from 23 ZERO. Vison X's Overland Area Lights are mounted along the perimeter of the rack and provide ample camp site lighting.

Off Grid Trailers Pando 2.0 In Tow

Hooked to the rear of the LX600 is a Pando 2.0 teardrop-style trailer from Off Grid Trailers . Not your grandmother's teardrop, the Pando 2.0 features 8 inches of wheel travel, 24 inches of ground clearance, a 360-degree articulating hitch, has a 29-degree departure angle, features Timbren 3500HD axle-less suspension, and rolls on 32-inch all-terrain tires. The trailer comes equipped with a large queen-size bed in the sleeping quarters, air conditioning, a hot water on-demand system, 23ZERO shower enclosure, and 33-gallon freshwater capacity. Camp meals will be kept on-point thanks to a rear slide-out galley kitchen with a hot and cold-water sink and a dual-burner stove. The Pando's slide-out storage compartment houses a Pi Duale pizza oven from Solo Stove. With a starting price of just about $35,000, that's only scratching the surface of what's built into the rugged Pando 2.0.

Doing It For Charity

The 2023 Ultimate Overland Vehicle will make its public debut at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, on May 19th 2023. From there it will head to Overland Expo Pacific Northwest in Redmond, Oregon, and Mountain West in Loveland, Colorado. It will also be on display at the first-ever Outdoor Adventure X show in Huntsville, Utah. At the conclusion of the show season, the 2022 Lexus LX600 and Pando 2.0 trailer will be auctioned off, separately, with the proceeds going to support the Overland Expo Foundation.
