Travel Director

Practice your skills at a traditional Thai cooking class

Discover the secrets of traditional Thai cooking in a teak wooden house surrounded by beautiful gardens and an organic farm in Chiang Mai. You’ll visit a market to sample some local delicacies, pick fresh herbs from the garden, then learn how to cook your own Thai food, including Northern Thai cuisine and classic Thai favorites.

Stroll through Pak Klong Talad market in Bangkok

Pak Klong Talad is one of the world’s most incredible flower markets, with flower species of every shape and color from all over Thailand. It’s open 24 hours and the busiest time is just after midnight, when trucks full of fresh flowers arrive and the florists begin trading to find the best bouquets for their stalls.

Meet a local monk and learn about Buddhism

Our Local Specialists will take you to Wat Suan Dok, a royal temple in Chiang Mai, where we'll meet a local Buddhist monk. It’s an incredible opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Buddhism and you’ll learn about the monk’s sacred traditions against the backdrop of the temple's striking golden chedi.

Join the locals for a graceful T'ai Chi practice

Live like a local and rise early for a peaceful T’ai Chi session in Lumpini Park. The park is a green haven with shaded lawns to practice the ancient art of T’ai Chi, and it’s a great way to ease into your day and the bustle of Bangkok.

Relax at the beachfront in Phuket

With long stretches of powdery white sands and turquoise waters, the beaches of Phuket are one of the most beautiful sights in Thailand. Relax under palm trees, go swimming or kayaking on the ocean, or dive below the water to discover brilliant sea life in protected marine parks.

Our top 5 things to do in Thailand

Our Thailand vacation packages will reveal every side of Thailand, from the Buddhist temples of Chiang Mai to the glittering beaches of Phuket.

Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is one of the most iconic sights in Bangkok and we’ll take you on a journey through this dazzling complex. See the impressive Royal Reception Halls and the revered Emerald Buddha, a Buddha image carved from a single block of jade, dating back to the 14th century.

Jim Thompson House

Located in Bangkok, the Jim Thompson House is the former home of James Thompson, an American businessman and architect. He dedicated his life to the revival of Thai silk and designed the house in 1958, with six traditional Thai-styled houses to showcase his large art collection of Thai paintings and historical Buddhist statues.

Wat Doi Suthep

Perched at the top of Doi Suthep mountain at an elevation of 3,520 feet, Wat Doi Suthep is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Thailand. We’ll take you up the 309 steps to find glittering shrines and statues, the holy gold plated chedi, and a sweeping view over the city of Chiang Mai.

Best museums in Thailand

Our guided trips to Thailand take you the country’s most incredible museums, from the former house of a Thai silk trader, to a sacred golden temple at the top of a mountain.

A delicious stir-fried noodle dish, Pad Thai is one of the most classic foods found in Thai street stalls. It’s a combination of egg, fish sauce, tamarind, and your choice of chicken, tofu and prawns. Top with bean sprouts and peanuts for crunch and chilli and lime juice for a zesty kick.

The most famous salad in Thailand, Som Tam is a fiery dish of shredded green papaya, tomatoes and green beans. The vegetables are mixed with fish sauce, lime juice, palm sugar and a healthy dose of chilli, and you can tailor the dish to your taste for extra sweetness or spiciness.

Green Curry

You’ll find the beloved green curry all over Thailand and our Local Specialists will show you the best spots to try this spicy coconut milk curry. Green chillies give the curry its color, and it’s filled with beans, Thai aubergines, the meat of your choice and served with steamed rice.

What to pack for Thailand

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Thailand the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A, B, C, F and O. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Reef-safe sunscreen & insect repellent

Protect yourself from the harsh Thai sun with SPF 30 or higher and protect the coral reefs with reef-safe sunscreen. You’ll also need to pack plenty of DEET insect repellent.

In Thai culture, it’s required to remove your shoes before entering houses, temples and some shops and restaurants. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

With plenty of islands ringed with golden shorelines and turquoise waters, you’ll definitely need a swimsuit for snorkelling, diving and blissful beach days in Thailand.

Thai phrasebook

The Thai language is unique to the country, and you’ll gain plenty of smiles and appreciation from the locals if you attempt to learn a few phrases.

Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Learn more about Thailand

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Top 10 iconic Thai landscapes

Whether you're traveling by tuk-tuk through the crazy streets, cycling along backroads, or taking a longtail through the khlongs, the journey in Bangkok is definitely half the fun. Drop into the stunning Grand Palace, see the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and wind your way through floating markets.

Start and finish an incredible 30 day South East Asia Loop in the exciting epicenter that is Bangkok.

2. Chiang Mai

This northern capital is overflowing with experiences. Temple-hop through some - or all - of its 300 temples, take a cooking class to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine, and explore the Night Bazaar for delicious food, designer goods, and a foot massage to die for.

Experience the magic of Chiang Mai on our 4 day Chiang Mai Adventure

If you ever wondered what was below Thailand's turquoise waters, this is the place to look. Learn to dive or pull on snorkeling gear to discover the fish and reefs that call this coastline home. Shark Island is close by for adrenaline seekers.

Choose your Ko Tao adventure on a 10 day Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui tour.

4. Hilltribe Country

Thailand's north is home to many of the country's minority groups. A hike along buffalo tracks will take you through colorful H'mong, Karen, and Lisu villages. Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life.

Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life on our 5 day Thailand Hilltribe Trek.

5. Ayuthaya

Modern meets ancient in Ayuthaya. The current city intertwines itself with the remnants of what was once one of Asia's great capitals. Walk the streets in search of clues to its imperial past and hire a bike to ride through the countryside, exploring the area's ruins.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian, and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colorful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the color hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

Set your sights on this incredible part of the world on a 3 days Chiang Mai and Golden Triangle.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

Top places to visit in Thailand

Spot schools of colorful tropical fish as you snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Ao Nang.

Finish off a 9 day Cycle Southern Thailand tour on the stunning limestone cliff beaches of Krabi.

Dive into the warm waters of Phuket and experience a little bit of paradise.

Spend a couple of days exploring all that Phuket has to offer on a 9 day Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Phuket adventure.

4. Erawan National Park

Cool off in the waters of Erawan National Park or simply stand back and watch the idyllic waterfalls.

Enjoy the beauty of Erawan National Park on our 12 day Premium Northern Thailand tour .

Follow the scent of chili and lemongrass to one of Bangkok’s many delicious food markets.

Pedal around ancient temples and ruins built as early as the 13th century at the World Heritage-listed Sukhothai Historic Park.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

  • Makha Bucha Day

Songkran Festival (Thai New Year)

H.M. King's Coronation

Visakha Bucha Day

Queen Suthida's Birthday

King Vajiralongkorn's Birthday

Buddhist Lent Day

Queen’s Birthday

Anniversary of the Death of King Bhumibol

Chulalongkorn Day

King’s Birthday

Please note dates of  Thai public holidays may vary.

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

What is internet access like in Thailand?

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Thailand?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Thailand - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The beaches make it worth visiting Thailand

Exotic, amazing, enchanting. Mere words cannot describe the joy of visiting one of the beautiful and exciting countries in Asia. The presence of numerous islands and two coastlines ensures a holiday in Thailand to be filled with various beaches. From crowded cosmopolitan beaches to secluded tropical getaways, you can really satiate your desires for the perfect beach holiday here.  Thailand is a country that has something for everyone. Whether you’re traveling alone, as a couple or with your family, a trip to Thailand will have all the right options to customize your itinerary and add attractions that suit your tastes and preferences.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary just outside Chiang Mai
  • Snorkel with the fish in Maya Bay
  • Take a boat ride from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands and Monkey Beach
  • Climb the 300 intricately carved steps to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple
  • Take in panoramic views from the seat of Big Buddha in Kron, Phuket
  • Float from vendor to vendor at Bangkok’ s floating markets
  • Swim beneath the waterfalls of Erawan National Park
  • Thailand’s glittery beaches are one of its biggest charms, but those golden temples are equally worthy of your time.

Travel Tips

  • The most fun way to get around Thailand is by tuk-tuk, which offers fantastic views along the way. Most of these open-air ‘taxis’ are blue and have three wheels, except for the red tuk-tuks of Phuket (some of which have sound systems and neon lights).
  • When visiting holy sites, be sure to bring a shawl so you can cover up your shoulders and knees. Also be prepared to remove your shoes before entering a temple or person’s home.
  • The most common greeting in Thailand is to bring your hands together in a prayer-like fashion and bow, accompanied with a “Sawatdee-kah” for males or a “Sawatdee-krap” for females. Be sure to return this gesture as a show of respect.
  • Thai people are extremely friendly and generous. Don’t be surprised if a local starts to strike up a random conversation, particularly in the markets.
  • Make your visit to Thailand is an ethical one. Research whether a tour company’s practices are socially responsible, particularly if visiting elephants or hill tribes.

Thailand has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Thailand before planning your tour.

Tours in Thailand - Questions and Answers

With a laid-back way of life and extraordinary cultural heritages, the shortest amount of time you should plan for any trip to Thailand is one week . In seven days, you can admire the golden pagodas of Bangkok and Ayutthaya, and choose to either kick back on the tropical beaches of the country’s south or head out to discover its northern tribal villages. However, if you were to ask us how long to spend in Thailand , we would recommend staying in the country for two weeks , since this gives you the chance to tick off most of the country’s bucket-list destinations at a leisurely pace. If you cannot make your stay last that long, then ten days make for a good compromise. If you're looking for the best Thailand tours and trips, you can find them here .

The best time to visit Thailand is between the months of November and March, which also coincides with the country’s high season. The weather is comparatively colder during this time of year, making it ideal to explore the country. If you want to avoid crowds, then make sure that you head for the country  in October. Please bear in mind that although the official monsoon season peaks in August and September, parts of the country continue receiving rainfall all through October, which puts most people off from visiting the country during this month. You can find more information here .

A western European or North American visitor to Thailand will find it one of the best countries in the world to visit on a budget . With street food and budget accommodation both keenly priced, USD 40 per person per day should cover accommodation and meal costs for frugal travelers. However, book organized tours and stay in middle to higher-range hotels and you will be looking at a daily budget of around USD 60 to USD 120 per person, per day. ATMs are widespread and operate exactly as they would at home – with English-language options.

Most western visitors do not require a visa to visit Thailand for a short term as tourists. Stays cannot be more than 30 days in one go and a total of 90 days within a six-month period. You will require a passport with at least six months remaining from your date of entry, alongside a return air ticket and proof that you have the equivalent of just over USD 600 to fund your stay. These details can be requested by customs officials on entry into the country.

The most widely spoken language in the country is Thai (Siamese), which also has its own alphabet. This can make it difficult for western travelers to communicate with the locals in the beginning. However, many Thai people also speak or understand a good amount of English, especially those living in large cities such as Bangkok, because of the language’s international importance. Few in the country expect visitors to speak any Thai, although any attempt to do so will bring smiles on the faces of those you are talking to.

The heart and soul of Thailand, Bangkok is an unmissable destination and makes for a logical first stop as it is also home to the country’s main international airport. Among the top things to do in Bangkok are visiting the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and exploring the royal palace in the city. Beach lovers will not want to miss a trip to Ko Samui and the Phi Phi Islands, while a tour to Chiang Mai is a must for anyone interested in history and culture. For ancient wonders, look no further than the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayutthaya . Head for Krabi if you are looking for a great mix of beach vibes and snorkeling adventures.

The memories of drifting down the muddy waters of the Mekong is sure to stay with you for years to come, while island hopping from Phuket or Krabi is another must while in the country. The tropical islands that pepper the Gulf of Thailand have been used as a shooting spot for everything from James Bond movies to ‘The Beach’. For a completely different perspective of the country, head to the north, where traditional tribal villages are located amid deep jungle and towering hills that are worth exploring. For history lovers, there are Khmer ruins waiting to be explored at Phanom Rung Historical Park along with the famous bridge on the River Kwai.

Thailand’s road network is well developed and the country’s public transport will take you almost anywhere at an inexpensive price. This is another reason why budget travelers love this country. Thailand also has more than 2,500 miles of railway, running from the border with Malaysia in the south to destinations like Chiang Mai in the north. Both are a great value for money, although neither buses nor trains are the fastest or the most comfortable means of travel. For this, you are better off organizing a car and a driver to take you from one destination to another.

How to Plan a Vacation in Thailand

A First-Timer's Guide for Planning a Trip to Thailand

make my trip thailand tour

primeimages / Getty Images

Although planning a vacation in Thailand sounds exotic, expensive, and potentially out of reach, getting there is easier than you think!

Bangkok often ranks as the most visited city in the world for a reason: Thailand is a beautiful, affordable destination — even for two-week trips. Each year, millions of travelers enjoy a vacation in Thailand without spending a fortune or backpacking for months.

How Much Will a Trip to Thailand Cost?

Forget the long-standing myth that faraway places are accessible to only the wealthy or retired. A vacation in Thailand can be as inexpensive as a trip to California, Hawaii, the Caribbean , or any of the other usual top destinations for Americans. It may even cost less, or at the least, you'll get nicer rooms and more memorable experiences for the same amount of money spent.

A large number of Thailand's annual international arrivals are backpacking budget travelers who get by on less than US $900 for a month in Southeast Asia . You may opt for a bit more luxury on a shorter trip. The good news is that tourism is well developed in Thailand; you have choices. You can find beach accommodation for $10 per night (bungalow with fan) or $200 per night (five-star hotel) — the choice is yours!

Airfare is obviously the largest upfront cost. But finagling a deal is possible with a little trickery. Use domestic carriers to get yourself to LAX or JFK, then book a separate ticket to Bangkok. Splitting a ticket between two carriers could save you hundreds of dollars!

Once on the ground in Thailand, the exchange rate and lower cost of eating and drinking can quickly compensate for the cost of the airfare.

Take a Tour or Plan an Independent Trip?

Although organized tours in Asia may seem the quick-and-easy solution, you can save money by just organizing transportation and activities once you are already on the ground. Research activities you want to do, however, there is no real need to book them online or before arriving in Thailand.

Booking day trips and activities is very easy in Thailand. Unless you go far off the beaten path, the language difference won't present any problems. Pretty well everyone who works with tourists will speak good enough English.

You'll find numerous travel agencies in tourist areas. Simply walk in, tell the person behind the counter where you want to go , and minutes later you'll be holding a bus/train/boat ticket. Commissions charged are trivial. The reception desk at your hotel or guesthouse will gladly book tickets and activities for you.

For activities, you'll usually be collected at your hotel by someone from the agency on the morning of your tour. Travelers are consolidated then taken on the day trip. At the end of the day, you'll be returned to your hotel — easy!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Thailand?

Weather differs a little between regions, but generally Thailand's driest months are between November and April . Even during the low/rainy season in Thailand , you'll enjoy days of sunshine. Discounts for activities and accommodation are easier to negotiate during the low-season months.

You may wish to time your vacation in Thailand around one of the many big festivals . At least make sure that you are aware one is coming — missing an exciting event by just a day or two is very frustrating!

The big Full Moon Party each month will affect transportation to and from the Koh Samui Archipelago (especially Koh Tao and Koh Phangan) . Planning an itinerary around moon phases may sound a bit pagan, but you'll be glad you did!

Do You Need Vaccinations for Thailand?

Although no specific vaccinations are required for Thailand, you should get the general ones recommended for all international travelers in Asia .

Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and a Tdap (for tetanus) are the most common jabs international travelers go for — all are good investments and provide protection for years.

You will not need rabies, yellow fever, or Japanese encephalitis vaccinations for a regular vacation in Thailand. The same applies for anti-malarial drugs. There is a relatively low risk of contracting malaria in Thailand, especially if you aren't spending extended amounts of time in the jungle.

The biggest risk in Thailand is dengue fever . Until the new vaccination being tested becomes available widespread, your best defense is to do what you can to avoid mosquito bites .

Zika (another mosquito-borne illness) is not a serious threat in Thailand.

What to Pack for Thailand?

With expansive malls in Bangkok and outdoor markets in Chiang Mai, along with plenty of smaller open-air street markets between, you'll have no shortage of cheap shopping opportunities. Leave room in your luggage: you'll definitely want to take home some unique finds! Pack less clothing and plan to buy an outfit or three there.

Rather than doing a lot of shopping before your vacation in Thailand, plan to purchase items locally to help merchants who need the income more than Western CEOs. Why carry an umbrella 8,000 miles if you can buy one there for $2 if it rains?

There are a few things you'll want to bring from home for your trip to Thailand. But beware of the biggest mistake most travelers in Asia admit to making: packing too much .

Accessing Money in Thailand

ATMs are literally everywhere in Thailand; they often compete for space! That's because providing cash to travelers is business: fees have skyrocketed to US $6-7 per transaction (on top of whatever your bank charges).

When using ATMs in Thailand, request the maximum amount each time . Sometimes breaking large denominations can be a challenge. Experienced travelers know to ask for 5,900 baht rather than 6,000 baht — that way they get some smaller denominations, too.

For instance, if you request 6,000 baht from an ATM, you'll receive six stiff 1,000-baht banknotes. Breaking them in small shops and eateries may produce some groans from the staff. Paying with them at carts for street food is simply rude. Instead, ask for 5,900 baht at the machine and get five 1,000-baht notes, one 500-baht note, and four ever-useful 100-baht notes.

As usual, exchanging U.S. dollars is an option. Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted at malls and larger hotels/restaurants, however, you may be charged an additional commission when paying with plastic. Identity theft is a growing problem ; opt to pay with cash when possible to minimize risk and transaction fees.

Haggling is a part of Thai culture , and you should bargain playfully for purchases such as souvenirs and clothing. Prices are even flexible in shopping malls. Accommodation and activities can often be negotiated, but always keep in mind the rules of saving face . Never haggle for food, drinks, or items with standardized prices.

Tipping is not the norm in Thailand , although there are some rare exceptions. Even if your intentions are good, leaving a tip accelerates cultural mutation and inflates prices for locals. Doing so causes people to prefer serving tourists (because they sling money around) over locals who may be more frugal.

For large purchases made on your trip, you can request a VAT refund at the airport as you exit Thailand. You'll need to have receipts and paperwork.

Prices displayed always include tax. At the register, you'll pay the price that was displayed. Sometimes a 10 percent service charge may be added to restaurant bills.

Where to Go in Thailand?

Most travelers arrive in Bangkok, but there are plenty of beautiful destinations farther afield .

  • The Thai Islands : No Thailand vacation is complete without visiting at least one or two of the beautiful islands. All differ in personality and allure. The shape of Thailand means choosing between some great island options in the Andaman Sea (west side) and the Gulf of Thailand (east side).
  • Chiang Mai : Thailand's northern capital is a favorite for many visitors. Life within the Old City is more manageable and easier to get around than Bangkok. The vibe is inarguably different and pleasant. Good food, outdoor markets, Lanna culture, and $6 massages are all great reasons to grab a low-cost flight or train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai .
  • Pai : Located around four hours north of Chiang Mai and surrounded by green hills, Pai has transformed in recent years from a quiet, "hippie" village into a major tourist destination. Despite the extra visitors, Pai retained much of its riverside charm. Organic farms and food, surprisingly good nightlife , and yoga/holistic/healthy workshops are all great reasons to visit. Northern Thailand provides many other draws in the area as well.
  • Ayutthaya : Just a two-hour train ride north of Bangkok, Thailand's former capital is the place to enjoy culture and cycle through ancient temple ruins. You'll often be the only person in a centuries-old temple!
  • Railay : Thailand's rock climbing epicenter in Krabi isn't just for climbers anymore. The impressive limestone scenery is unlike any other. But even if you prefer feet on the ground, the powdery sand and isolation (Railay is only accessible via boat) will make you feel as though you're on an island.

What to Expect on a Thailand Vacation

The tourism infrastructure in Thailand is well established. They've had a lot of practice accommodating visitors of all budgets and trip durations. But as with many top destinations, things are creeping decidedly upscale as older, mom-and-pop businesses are demolished and replaced by foreign-owned chains.

Thai food is celebrated around the world for its savory flavors and spicy potential. But forget the myth that all Thai food is spicy — most restaurants (especially the ones catering to tourists) will ask how much pain you can handle or allow you to add your own spice. Chili powder is usually available on every table.

Fun nightlife is widespread in Thailand. The cost of a large domestic beer averages $2 – 3. From epic beach parties to drinking sessions with locals , only a few specific areas are as seedy as is often depicted on television.

Thailand is a Buddhist country . You will inevitably end up encountering monks and visiting impressive temples. Don't expect Hollywood's depiction of a Buddhist monk: the Theravada monks in Thailand often have smartphones!

Thailand is a very safe destination. Crime, aside from the usual petty theft, is rarely ever a problem for foreign visitors. Tourism is big business, and Thais will often go out of their way to help you enjoy their beautiful country.

Enhance your trip by learning how to say hello in Thai before you go. Locals are patiently tolerant, however, you should know a few dos and don'ts in Thailand to avoid being "that" tourist who accidentally ruins a good thing!

If planning a vacation in Thailand is so easy, there must be some downsides, right? Sure. With every international destination, there are some potential concessions to make. Here are a few common complaints most often cited by travelers:

  • Assuming you departed from North America, circling the globe to Asia will consume a full day (each direction) of your vacation time. Also, jetlag bites harder; the time difference between Eastern Standard Time and Bangkok is +12 hours.
  • Major attractions get very busy during the dry season months (November to April). Traffic in Bangkok is worse than ever.
  • Although crime isn't bad, there are a number of individuals who make livings by scamming tourists.

Custom Asia Travel Experience

We had a great day in Ninh Binh! The customer service rep (Molly) was very helpful organising a custom tour so we could see the major sights. Our guide, Thu, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We saw Bai Dinh temple, Hoa Lu ancient city, Bich Dong pagoda, and Tam Coc boat tour. We would recommend this company to others!

Trip of a lifetime!

I cannot say enough positives about Custom Asia Travel! We visited Vietnam in December/January 2023 and had an amazing trip with our 3 teens. The itinerary exceeded our expectations! We travelled to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. We had no issues with any of our transportation around the country - our drivers and guides were always there on time (early, actually), friendly and helpful. The accommodations were excellent and our guides were fantastic (Tanh, Tanh, and Viet - they were awesome!). Every place we stayed put our rooms right next to each other, often adjoining, and the kids’ room always had two twin beds and a cot, while my husband and I had a king bed. This was perfect as our teenagers did not want to share beds, lol! The activities were super fun and appealed to all of us. So many highlights - the kids loved the rice farm tour (riding the water Buffalo elicited the biggest smile we’ve ever seen from our 16 year old!), seeing the caves in Ninh Binh, the cooking class in Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. I really appreciated that some of our itinerary was focused on less crowded activities - a couple of the temples we saw were practically empty, allowing us to enjoy and experience these beautiful sites on our own. We did a couple of bike rides which were also highlights, such a great way to explore and see the area! Minh was available and responsive while planning the trip and while we were there. I agree with others reviews about whether she ever sleeps! She was able to coordinate our luggage getting dropped off as it did not arrive with us, and contacted one of the hotels about a ring that had been left, and arranged for us to pick it up. She was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We truly had a relaxing and stress free trip because of the excellent customer service from Minh and our guides. With only having 12 days to visit we were so grateful to be able to enjoy the travel and know that Minh and her team were there if and when needed. I highly recommend using this company, you will not regret it! Now I am dreaming of how quickly we can make it back!! Thank you thank you to Minh and the team, our trip was unforgettable!

Planning Your Trip to Thailand – The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need

Planning a trip to Thailand can make your head spin.

Where should you visit, what should you pack, do you need a Visa?

The questions can be endless.

I've helped numerous people over the years plan their trips to Thailand; both close friends and family, and friends of work associates who have contacted me for advice.

In this post, I'll reveal the same tips I give them, and help you plan the holiday of a lifetime.

This post will also help you if you're planning a family trip to Thailand, a move to Thailand, either for a job, teaching, or just an extended stay.

  • Where to stay
  • Weather seasons
  •   Accommodation
  •   Pre-holiday to-do list

Where to Stay in Thailand

If you're visiting Thailand for two or three weeks, then you're probably torn over which parts of the country to visit.

There are so many islands to consider, and so many areas of the country that boast beautiful scenery and interesting culture.

The key is to strike a balance between not staying in one place too long and not visiting places too quickly – otherwise you don't get to really explore and appreciate them.

My general advice  for a holiday would be to visit three areas of the country:

Some might say you should avoid Bangkok because it's really busy, hot, and doesn't have a beach.

In my opinion, if you're going to visit Thailand, then you should experience Bangkok.

It's actually a good place to arrive and spend a few days.

Because if you've had a long haul flight, then you will most likely be landing in Bangkok, so you can catch a taxi to your hotel and get some rest, rather than waiting around for a connecting flight.

Moreover, if you're flying across a couple of time zones, then you will be jet-lagged.

I'd rather get over my jet lag in Bangkok and be fully refreshed for visiting the beaches and islands, than sleeping half the day away at a beautiful beach location.

So two or three nights in Bangkok is ideal.

wat-arun-bangkok

Wat Arun is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok.

If you arrive in the afternoon on the first day, then you can hang out at the hotel, maybe visit a market and grab something to eat, and then get some sleep.

You're probably going to sleep in late, or wake up early the next day and then want to sleep again in the afternoon to get over your jet lag.

You'll then have one more full day where you feel more energetic and can visit the Grand Palace , maybe a floating market, and do a bit of shopping .

Another option is to spend a couple of days in Bangkok when you arrive, and then come back to Bangkok for a day before you leave.

The reasoning behind this is that you might want to do some shopping before you go home, but you might not want to do that shopping when you arrive because you would have to carry the stuff around with you for the rest of your holiday.

This really depends on how much shopping you plan on taking home.

If you have more time on your hands in Bangkok, check out my list of things to do in the Big Mango.

Staying on Thailand's Islands

It goes without saying that the Southern islands have the best beaches.

There are some good beaches that you can get to in a couple of hours from Bangkok, such as on Koh Larn and Koh Samet.

However,  if you choose to go to Phuket or Koh Samui, from that base you will be able to visit a number of other islands too.

You also have a good selection of beaches on those islands.

phi-phi-island

The Phi Phi Islands are an island group in Thailand, between the large island of Phuket and the Straits of Malacca coast of Thailand.

Yes, these are the more commercial islands, and while there are more intimate and less touristy islands, pretty much all of the best beach locations have a lot of visitor traffic in high season.

Furthermore, the more remote islands aren't always that practical for families, and some lack good accommodation and things to do, particularly for kids.

If you come for a second or third holiday, then you might want to explore some of the less popular but more beautiful islands.

But if this is your first and potentially your only trip, then I recommend going to Phuket or Koh Samui, and from these islands taking boat trips to see other beautiful islands and beaches.

Koh-Samui-Samujana-Villa

Located a short drive from Choeng Mon Beach in Koh Samui, Samujana boast luxurious villas.

The North (Chiang Mai)

You might choose to simply stay down south and enjoy the beaches, and I wouldn't blame you. I'd happily sit on a deckchair for the entire holiday, to'ing and fro'ing from the massage spot, gym, and bar.

But if you want a deeper insight to the country and to see another side to Thailand, then the North is a good place to visit.

Chang Mai in particular is very popular, Westerner-friendly city – surrounded by beautiful nature.

You can base yourself in Chang Mai for a few days and go off for trips to Doi Intanon National Park, Doi Suthep Temple, the Elephant Nature Park ,  and enjoy the good food and night markets of the North.

Again, like Bangkok, a few nights here will be adequate.

doi-inthanon-national-park

Doi Inthanon, in Chiang Mai, is the highest mountain in Thailand.

Got an Extra Few Days?

If you find yourself back in Bangkok and you've got an extra few days to spare, then you might go to Koh Samet for a couple of nights,  which is three hours from Bangkok and a 30-minute ferry.

Samet is not far from the aptly named Sin City of Pattaya. Indeed, if you are a single man or with a group of friends, you might like to see the bright lights of Pattaya,  which is a beach resort too, and only a couple of hours drive from Bangkok.

Probably not the smartest idea to take your wife or girlfriend there. Unless they aren't bothered by go-go bars and hookers.

Visiting, in Summary

Those who have lived in Thailand for a while, or visited on holiday a number of times, may poo-poo my suggestions and give you recommendations of places to go that are off the beaten track.

But that's because the more time you spend in Thailand the more you want to get away from the touristy areas and find more isolated places.

But generally, for a first holiday, you want to be in the thick of it and see the main attractions of the things other people have seen.

You want easy access and plenty of options. Trust me, I've been there, done it, and worn the t-shirt.

That being said, if you are traveling for three months or more and spending a month in Thailand, then you can visit these popular hotspots and then go off and visit some more remote places like these.

khoa-sok-national-park

Khao Sok is situated on the mainland between Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and Koh Samui.

When to Visit Thailand – Weather

The weather in Thailand does vary by region at different times of the year.

Generally speaking, you can follow this guide:

  • Dry Season: March-May
  • Rainy Season: May-October
  • Cool Season: November-February

For a place by place breakdown, check out my extensive weather guide.

Accommodation for Different Budgets

Depending on whether you're a solo backpacker or a family of 4 on the holiday of a lifetime, accommodation requirements vary for different types of traveler.

Luckily, Thailand generally has something for everyone in all corners of the country.

From package holidays to hostels and mid-range hotels, check out my booking recommendations here.

Also consider that if you aren't too fussed about plush accommodation, you can rock up and book in at what's available.

During high season you won't be able to be too picky, as the nicer rooms and bungalows get booked up in advance.

But let me just say that I have never not been able to get a room somewhere in any of Asia.

And you're planning on catching a train or a bus, check out 12GO here.

Pre-Holiday To-Do List

The large majority of countries are subject to a visa exemption. This means that when their citizens enter Thailand they get a stamp that permits a stay of 30 days.

If you are coming towards the end of your trip and you think you might want to stay longer, you can visit an immigration office and extend this stay by another 30 days for 1,900 Baht.

However,  in the interest of good planning, if you think that extending your stay is a good possibility, you should consider getting a single entry tourist visa, which gives you a 60-day stay in the country.

A multiple entry tourist visa  is a six month visa, but you can only stay for 60 days at a time. You then have to leave the country and come back into activate a further 60 days.

Again, the multiple entry option can be extended for 30 days by going to immigration and paying the aforementioned fee.

Generally speaking, those coming for a two or three week holiday won't need to worry about a visa.

2. Travel Insurance

It goes without saying that you will need travel insurance.

Not only does travel insurance protects you against hospital bills if you fall ill or have an accident, but some policies will also cover you against cancellation of your flights or lost baggage and stolen goods.

Travel insurance is one of those things that many people forget to do in the midst of all the excitement of planning.

So I suggest this is something that you do early on in your trip planning process to make sure that you are covered from the moment you leave your house.

I don't want to make you fear going on holiday, but at the end of the day it gives you peace of mind.

See my travel insurance recommendations here.

3. Suitable Backpack/Holdall

Another thing that people often don't consider until the last minute, mainly because they have an old suitcase or holdall in the attic that  they always use, is suitable luggage.

Consider what type of holiday you are taking:

  • Are you going to be traveling on trains and buses?
  • Are you going to be trekking or diving?
  • Or are you going to be staying in luxury hotels and taking  private cars everywhere and having someone to hold your back?

You won't want a big clunky suitcase if you are  taking an overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai .

And if you are going trekking , then you may need to consider a second bag in addition to your main backpack; one that is detachable and can be taken with your essentials on the trek.

In fact, a second, smaller backpack is advisable for everyone visiting Thailand.

You will need something practical to carry around with you during the daytime.

Although, when out shopping and in crowds you should wear backpacks on your front so that you can't be pick-pocketed, particularly in Bangkok.

I'm not trying to scare you here, the same goes for any major city you are visiting, including my hometown, London.

4. Mosquito Spray

You can find mosquito spray in Thailand at pretty much every convenience store, and is likely to be cheaper than in your home country.

However, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to look for a higher quality brand in your home country before you leave.

Your mosquito spray should contain DEET.

Note that the higher percentage of DEET does not represent how effective it is but how long it lasts:

Products containing lower concentrations of DEET are as effective as those with higher concentrations, but for shorter periods of time. On average, products containing 100% DEET will be effective for 9.5 hours, 30% DEET for 6.5 hours, 15% DEET for 5 hours, 10% DEET for 3 hours and 5% DEET for 2 hours ( source )

5. Vaccinations

There maybe some vaccinations for you to consider before you visit Thailand.

These can usually be done by your regular Doctor, and even at some pharmacies. There's a full list here.

6. Changing Money

People often change up lots of money before they go on holiday, thinking that they will run out quickly, but this is not a wise thing to do.

It isn't a good idea to travel with loads of money on you, just in case you lose it.

Moreover, I usually get a better exchange rate when I arrive in Bangkok than I do back home, anyway.  You will find a number of exhange places in central Bangkok.

If you want to do it at the airport, don't do it at the exchange booth inside the arrivals area, do it when you come out into the main foyer, as you tend to get better rate there.

You might choose to change up to $300 before you leave, depending on how many people are traveling.

That being said, it is expensive to withdraw money in Thailand- because you get charged for the local withdrawal and charged by your bank back home for the international withdrawal.

This could end up costing you $5-6 dollars per withdrawal.

That said, this isn't really a big deal if you only make three withdrawals across the whole holiday.

Note that cash machines are generally limited to a withdrawal amount of 20,000 Baht per time.

If you do want to avoid fees, then consider finding a credit or debit card provider that doesn't charge for international transactions,  and/or has low rates on withdrawals.

You might also want to consider something like the Revolut Card.

This is a multi-currency prepaid card, which allows you to pre-load money and spend abroad.

One I would  recommend is making a plan before you leave, detailing how much money you plan to take in cash, both money changed into Thai Baht and money in your native currency to change up in Thailand.

And then consider a cost-effective strategy for withdrawing money and spending money on your cards.

7. Health Insurance

If you have travel insurance then you aren't likely to need this, but for those with specific conditions, or who want specific extra cover – perhaps for an extended period, health insurance may be a requirement.

Cigna is a reputable and reliable health insurer for those living and traveling in Thailand.

You can get a quote using their 2-minute quote page by clicking here.

Streaming & Secure Internet Browsing

If you want to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney + on holiday, you will need to bypass GEO restrictions to watch some of the content.

You can do this with a VPN. A VPN is also a good idea when using WIFI in airports and cafes, particularly if you are going to be logging onto personal banking or accessing other sensitive information from your laptop, phone or tablet.

I have a post with more details on this. Read the VPN post here.

Over the course of this Grand Tour, you’ll come to feel right at home—and the same goes for the extension to neighboring Cambodia.

Day-by-day itinerary

make my trip thailand tour

Board your overnight flight to Bangkok today.

Welcome to Thailand! As you arrive at your hotel tonight, you might receive a wai: a traditional greeting where the hands are placed in a prayer-like position, followed by a gentle bow of the head. Return the greeting (or offer a warm smile back) then settle into your room.

Join your Tour Director for a sightseeing tour of Bangkok, the bustling capital city set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

  • Explore the sprawling Grand Palace, home to the kings of Siam from 1782 to 1925. The landmark’s exterior elegantly blends traditional Thai architecture with inspiration from the European Renaissance. Give it a good look before venturing on.
  • While roaming the complex, pass by Wat Phra Kaew. Also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, this structure is the spiritual core of Thai Buddhism and a pilgrimage site for the devout.
  • Step inside the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, or Wat Pho, to admire the grandeur of the gilded, 150-foot-long statue depicting the Buddha’s passing and attainment of nirvana. (It’s the biggest reclining Buddha statue in the city!)
  • Look over the nearby flower market’s rainbow-hued rows of blooms before taking a walking tour of the Chinatown neighborhood—one of the largest in the world. Bursting with food stalls, ornate temples, and the rich history of its immigrants, it’s truly a sight to behold.

Enjoy an included welcome lunch with your fellow travelers, then tour the city’s canals, or klongs, on a converted rice barge as you sample local fruits.

Leave the bustle of Bangkok behind for a day and go to the city’s outskirts. Then, dive into a pair of uniquely Thai sites.

  • Climb aboard a long-tail boat and glide past villages to the canal-crossed Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Here, shoppers and merchants do business on the water, placing orders and transferring goods between vessels. Maneuver through its varied stalls and take it all in.
  • Swap water for land, and one shopping hub for another, when you visit the Maeklong Railway Market. Built on an active rail line, it experiences a flurry of activity whenever a train comes rumbling by. Vendors will hurriedly pack up their stalls and duck out of the way; once the locomotive passes, they set back up and keep on selling.

From there, continue to a local organic farm to learn about eco-friendly agricultural practices from the farmers who till the land. Sample freshly picked fruit and a refreshing coconut drink, take part in a hands-on planting workshop, then head back to your hotel for some well-earned rest.

Bid Bangkok farewell and head north to the provincial capital of Ayutthaya, where you’ll learn more about its royal history during a guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Ayutthaya Historical Park.

  • Tour the ruins of palaces and monasteries—decorated with beautiful, saffron-robed statues of the Buddha—and discover how the city was once the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the predecessor of modern Thailand.
  • Visit Wat Lokkayasutha, the Temple of the Earth, and see its 42-meter-long stone statue of the reclining Buddha.

Sightseeing complete, go back to Bangkok and transfer to the airport. You’ll fly to Chiang Rai, a hilly city close to the Myanmar and Laotian borders, dotted with Buddhist shrines and ancient ruins. Once you arrive, enjoy an included dinner with your group, then catch up on rest in anticipation of tomorrow’s adventures.

After breakfast, venture beyond Chiang Rai to explore the waterways, villages, and farms of the countryside. Begin by boarding a long-tail boat for a cruise along the Mekong—one of the longest rivers in Asia. You’ll sail past the villages of hill tribes en route to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos come together.

Disembark for an included lunch overlooking the Mekong, then make your way to Choui Fong Tea, a plantation that specializes in oolong. Link up with an expert for a guided tour, and after, sample three different kinds of local tea. Savor each sip—and the view of the terraced fields unfurling before you—then call it a day.

Begin making your way to Chiang Mai, stopping to bask in the beauty of the region’s most impressive landmarks as you go.

  • Start at Wat Rong Khun. Completed in 1997, the White Temple is otherworldly in scope and scale, blending modern art with traditional Buddhist symbolism. Cross its main bridge, flanked by outreaching hands symbolizing unchecked desire, and admire the temple’s fine craftsmanship up close.
  • Visit Doi Suthep, half of a twin-peaked granite mountain overlooking Chiang Mai, and take a cable car to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. This mountaintop temple is steeped in legend and is one of the most sacred places in Thailand, making it a popular pilgrimage site during the Buddhist holidays of Makha Bucha and Visak.
  • Soak up vistas of downtown Chiang Mai in the distance, then either ride the cable car back to the base of Doi Suthep or, time permitting, opt for a one-hour hike down a well-marked trail. (Please note: If you choose to hike, be ready to negotiate steps and declines.)

End your evening with a Thai cooking class, where trained chefs will teach you how to prepare four classic dishes. Relax in a secluded village surrounded by rice paddies as you eat dinner, then continue to Chiang Mai and end your day.

Rewind the clock during today’s optional excursion and immerse yourself in traditional Thai life among the Mae Kampong hill tribe. Alternatively, stay behind and get to know Chiang Mai yourself. One must-see: the Old City. Protected by a wall, ringed by a moat, and packed with more than 300 temples, this cultural quarter showcases seven centuries of history.

Tonight, join your Tour Director to explore the Chiang Mai Night Market, a sprawling complex just outside the Old City’s ancient walls. You’re in for what’s arguably the best night market experience in Thailand, where vendors sell everything from street food to clothing to antiques. Because prices here aren’t fixed, the market is a beloved spot among bargain hunters, and you’ll get plenty of free time to shop at your leisure.

Mae Kampong Hill Tribe: Village Visit & Hike

From $65 per person

Drive through the countryside and visit ChangChill, an organization at the forefront of elephant welfare and responsible tourism in Chiang Mai.

  • Hear how the group works with World Animal Protection, an animal rights nonprofit, to create a safe living environment for elephants and an educational experience for visitors.
  • Walk along hillsides and through rice paddies, learning about Asian elephants as you watch them freely roam the sanctuary’s grounds.
  • Chat with the mahouts, or elephant caretakers, and enjoy a vegetarian meal overlooking the elephants’ natural bathing spot.
  • Help staffers prepare medicine and food for the gentle, giant residents.

Wrap up at ChangChill and look forward to your evening as you journey back to your hotel. Dig into dinner—and another aspect of Thai culture—at a Lanna family’s home on tonight’s optional excursion, or set out on your own to track down a particular dish you’ve been craving. (Don’t leave without trying the khao soi, a fragrant coconut curry noodle soup that’s a Chiang Mai specialty.)

Please note: Travelers should wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk along uneven paths with some hills.

Lanna Family Home-Hosted Dinner

From $89 per person

This morning, visit the Wat Suan Dok Buddhist temple—distinguished by its gold leaf-covered, 160-feet-tall chedi, or stupa—to meet with a resident monk. They’ll teach you about their faith and how they live, and you’ll have the chance to ask them questions.

Afterward, transfer to the airport and fly to Phuket, where crystal clear water and powdery white sand await you. Sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine, with your group before retiring for the night.

Board a speedboat, push off Phuket Island, and skim over turquoise waves, bound for the jungle-crowned isles of Ao Phang Nga National Park.

  • Boat between the park’s towering limestone formations, or karsts. You’ll pass thick mangrove forests, too—keep an eye out for some of the 200 bird species that call them home.
  • Enjoy an included lunch on your boat, then motor to Talu Island. There, you’ll get to canoe through dramatically arched sea caves with experienced local paddlers as your guides.
  • Visit the iconic shores of Khao Phing Kan, better known to some as James Bond Island. It was made into a popular travel destination when it was chosen as a filming location for the 1974 movie, The Man with the Golden Gun .

Add another of Thailand’s most famous destinations to your itinerary—and dive into those enticing tropical waters—on today’s optional excursion to the Phi Phi Islands. For something more low-key, stay behind and make the most of a day to yourself. (There’s nothing wrong with a spot of sunbathing.)

make my trip thailand tour

Phi Phi Islands Cruise, Snorkeling & Lunch

From $105 per person

Fly to Bangkok this afternoon and spend your free time exploring the city at your leisure.

Tonight, head to a local restaurant and celebrate your trip with your fellow travelers during a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport and either fly home or to Cambodia for this tour’s extension. (With the UNESCO-listed towers of Angkor Wat this close, why wouldn’t you spend a few more days in Southeast Asia?)

Instead of flying home from Bangkok, you’ll board a flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. After landing, begin your trip’s extension with an included lunch of Cambodian specialties. As the sun starts sinking toward the horizon, you’ll head out for a tour of Angkor Wat—the world’s largest religious monument and an outstanding example of Khmer architecture.

Learn how this UNESCO-recognized complex honors both Hinduism and Buddhism as you watch the sun dip behind its lotus blossom-shaped towers. Then, sit down for an included dinner with your groupmates.

Leave Siem Reap once more for a final day of ruin-roaming with your Tour Director, beginning at Angkor Thom—the longest-serving capital of the Khmer Empire. Explore the complex, stopping to view the Terrace of the Elephants. This ornamental platform was named for the designs carved into its eastern wall and was used by King Jayavarman VII to observe the return of his victorious army.

Depart from Angkor Thom and enjoy an included lunch at a local restaurant before setting out for Ta Prohm. Decorated by bas-reliefs and shaded by trees shooting out from gaps in its stones, this 12th-century temple was made famous by the 2001 film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider .

Before heading to the airport and beginning your journey home, spend your last full day in Cambodia reflecting on a heavy part of its modern history. This country suffered through numerous wars in the 20th century, and countless pieces of unexploded ordnance (UXO) were left buried in the soil in their wake. Today, you’ll enter the Cambodian Landmine Museum, the headquarters of an organization dedicated to defusing UXO, to hear about their efforts and see their impact firsthand.

  • Watch a short film about Aki Ra, a former Khmer Rouge child soldier who founded the museum.
  • Take a guided audio tour of the museum, which is home to a collection of decommissioned explosives, and learn about the organization’s de-mining projects and community development initiatives.
  • Learn how the revenue from your visit supports relief projects for those harmed by landmines and UXO.

Later, fly back to Bangkok for a farewell dinner with your group, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport for your early morning flight home.

My 2 week tour of Thailand was wonderful! Chai our leader was so informative and helpful! Accommodations were great and good food! Moving from Chiang Mai to Phuket took an entire day which seemed like a waste of our time in airports!

Being able to engage with a culture was wonderful. This trip had the perfect balance of city, jungle, beach, etc. I would highly recommend and if you are lucky enough to get Chai as your guide, you are in for a treat!

  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • The lunch at the elephant sanctuary is typically a vegetarian buffet, including water, coffee, and tea.
  • At the Thai Cooking Class & Dinner, some dishes may include sour and spicy prawn soup, Thai green curry with chicken, mango sweet sticky rice and stri fried chicken with cashew (seasonal and subject to change).
  • Traditional Thai cooking uses market-fresh ingredients seasoned with a mix of herbs, spices, and condiments such as chili peppers and fish sauce. The main staple is rice. Most meals include a soup, a curry, a steamed or fried dish, and a salad.
  • On the tour extension, international influence is evident in the Khmer cuisine of Cambodia, where full flavor is created through the mix of herbs and spices such as sweet basil, Asian coriander, mint, lemongrass, and pepper. The base of almost all Cambodian dishes is rice or noodles, served with a curry, soup, or vegetable stir-fry. Grilled freshwater fish is popular, and the fermented fish paste known as prahok is a traditional seasoning.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Thai baht in Thailand (plus the Cambodian riel on the tour extension).
  • On the tour extension in Cambodia, U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, though change may be given in riel. Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses, and airlines list their prices in U.S. dollars, but small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually conducted in riel. Always carry small amounts of riel for motorcycle taxis, snacks, and other small purchases.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey in Thailand.
  • You will have a different Tour Director for your tour extension in Cambodia than on your main tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Thailand (and Cambodia on the tour extension) is 11 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 11pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
  • Animal Welfare: Take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart during included tour activities and your free time. Do not touch, do not feed, and maintain a respectful distance from wild animals. Wild animals encountered on tour should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior. If you feel we are not meeting these commitments, please share your feedback with us.
  • Animal Welfare: Avoid buying any exploitative wildlife products such as tortoise shell or shark fin soup.

2. decide how many days to stay.

  • 4. Consider Your Budget

7. Getting to and Around Thailand

Thailand can be divided into three main regions for travelers:

  • Northern Thailand for nature, elephants, and local villages;
  • the Central Plains for Bangkok and city getaways, and
  • Southern Thailand for great beaches.

With our knowledge of Thailand and feedback from our customers, we suggest you visit Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and one or two southern beaches for your first trip , extending it to Chiang Rai and/or a national park if you have the time.

1) Bangkok — A Blend of Modernity and Tradition

Bangkok is Thailand's capital and top gateway city. It is a city that offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition, making it a perfect destination for a family or couple's trip.

For those interested in learning more about Thailand's splendid architecture and temples , the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho are must-see attractions.

Whether traveling as a family or a couple, a foodie tour to discover the sophisticated flavors of Bangkok's old district in Chinatown among other local cuisine will create a deliciously memorable experience.

Your trip would not be complete without a cruise along Bangkok's ancient canals and a visit to a floating market , which would give you an insight into a bygone way of life.

For a special experience and some private time, you could spend a night in a floating house at Kanchanaburi.

2) Chiang Mai — Have a Close Encounter with Elephants

Chiang Mai, known as the 'Rose of the North', is a wonderful destination for a family or couple's trip, offering culture, history, relaxation, and excitement as well.

You could start your trip with a visit to the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple , which offers breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. Then explore the Old City and its many street markets, such as the Night Bazaar.

Seeing elephants usually tops the list of things to do in Chiang Mai, whether with kids or your partner. Our half-day elephant tou r allows you to feed the elephants, walk with them, and play with them in the mud of a bathing pool.

If you visit in November, don't miss Chiang Mai's Yi Peng Lantern Festival , which is a romantic event that many couples dream of.

3) The Thai Islands: Phuket or Samui?

Your Thailand trip would not be complete without visiting at least one or two of its beautiful islands. The only question is which island should you choose from so many islands on both the west and east coasts of Thailand.

Phuket , along with Krabi and Koh Phi Phi, on the Andaman Sea (west coast) is loved by families for its various exciting activities and family-friendly hotel options .

While Ko Samui , along with Ko Pha-Ngan and Ko Tao, on the east coast is very popular with couples, due to their being home to luxury resorts and a quieter vibe .

If you are traveling in your summer vacation , Ko Samui is recommended for its sunny and dry weather, while Phuket is in its rainy season.

Can't make a decision yet? Suggested read: Phuket vs Koh Samui .

4) A National Park: Enjoy Jungle Hikes and Encounter Wildlife

To enrich your stay in Thailand, you should consider including a national park in your trip, such as Kao Yai or Khao Sok.

Located north of Phuket, Khao Sok National Park is home to some of the planet's oldest rainforests, with guided activities including jungle hikes and boat tours on scenic Cheow Lan Lake. Spending a night in a "tree house" (treetop lodge) could be an experience full of lifetime memories for your kids. For couples, there's the special and romantic experience of staying in a luxury tent surrounded by rainforest.

North of Bangkok, Khao Yai National Park makes an amazing day out.

If you're planning a trip to Southeast Asia, get some inspiration from our article: 2-Week Southeast Asia Itineraries for Couples, Families, and More .

We suggest you take at least a week for your first trip to see a spectrum of the highlights in the top three cities.

  • 7–10 days: Bangkok (2–3 days), Chiang Mai (2–3 days), and a southern island like Phuket or Koh Samui (3–4 days). See the  9-day Thailand Family Tour for inspiration. Or get more sample itineraries:  Top 5 Thailand Itineraries for 10 Days .
  • 10-15 days: For a few more days, you can discover more of Thailand, like charming Chiang Rai and a national park, you will need a few more days. See our sample itineraries for inspiration: 12-Day Thailand Family Holiday , 12-Day Thailand Wonders Tour , and Best 3 Thailand Itineraries for 12 Days .

If you are lucky enough to have more time to tour Thailand, say 3, 4, or even 8 weeks then you have a lot more options! See our page the Ultimate Thailand Travel Itinerary Guide From 5 Days to 1 Month for more inspiration.

For 2–3 weeks , you can consider visiting Thailand with one or two other countries. Vietnam and Cambodia are 2 of the most popular choices. See the sample itineraries for inspiration:

3. Consider When to Travel to Thailand

In general, the best time to visit most of Thailand is during the dry season between November and March , when the temperatures are pleasant and there is very little rainfall.

According to our experience, if your travel dates are totally flexible, the ideal times are late October and early April , when the weather is still good and the crowds are fewer.

Christmas and New Year holidays are the busiest times . Hotels in popular cities/islands such as Bangkok and Phuket, and flights between popular destinations such as Chiang Mai - Phuket are likely to be sold out in advance. Be sure to plan ahead and make reservations at least 6 months in advance for better deals. Let us know your interests and requirements , and we'll take care of everything.

If you travel between August and September for the Phuket area or between October and December for the Koh Samui area, be prepared for showers. Fewer crowds and cheaper prices are its benefits. You can get more detailed tips on Best Times to Travel to Thailand .

Vietnam and Cambodia have similar climates to Thailand's . You may want to visit these three destinations in one trip. Check How to Plan a 3-Week Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam Tour

4. Consider Your Budget for a Thailand Trip

In general, Thailand is surprisingly affordable, and therefore it is particularly popular to visit. Airfares for your international flights are the largest upfront cost. On arrival in Thailand, your costs will vary greatly depending on the kind of traveler you want to be.

Thailand is a country that covers all budgets! From economy-class hotels to top-class resorts, street food to gourmet dinners for hundreds, and free beaches to expensive tours, Thailand has it all!

A private tour is an affordable luxury in Thailand! Private service is value for money there. Here are the prices for a private tour based on a group of 2 people during the peak season, for your reference:

  • On a medium budget, touring Thailand typically costs around US$150–200 per day per person (including 4-star hotels, airfares within Thailand, attractions, guides, and transfers).
  • For a higher budget of US$200–250 per day per person, more comfort can be enjoyed (including 5-star hotels, airfares within Thailand, attractions, guides, and transfers).
  • For a family trip (2 adults plus 2–3 children) for 2 weeks in Thailand or in Southeast Asia, it normally costs US$10,000–15,000 per family excluding international flights from/to America or Europe.

Learn more about how much money you need when visiting Thailand. Check out some private Thailand tours and private Southeast tours to get a general idea of the cost.

5. Consider Traveling Independently or Taking a Guided Tour

While Thailand is easy enough to travel to independently for backpackers, it is at the same time very time-consuming (if not troublesome) to choose the most suitable hotels and arrange all the best activities for you, while seeking value for money and great service.

A private guided tour is a great way to maximize your time , eliminating any frustrating time spent on planning and traveling and ensuring a smoother, stress-free, and more enjoyable journey.

Work with our travel consultant to create an itinerary that fits your schedule and focuses on the places and experiences that matter most to you. Our consultants can not only help you sift through thousands of hotel and restaurant options to find the right one for you, whether it's for couples or families but also quickly provide alternative solutions in case of any changes .

Contact us to enjoy a quality service.

6. Check Out Thailand's Visa Policy

Nationals of many countries are exempt from needing a tourist visa to enter the Kingdom of Thailand, including the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Most travelers can stay in Thailand without a visa for 30 days. We have more information on Thailand visas and visa requirements for other Asian countries .

Getting to Thailand

Flying from North America to Thailand usually involves a connecting flight. Popular transfer cities include Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan), Hong Kong, Taipei, and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).

Direct flights operate between Bangkok and the main cities in Europe and Oceania.

We are confident that our private tours are the most convenient option for your trip to Thailand. We can make an itinerary according to your flight times and arrange trouble-free private transport.

Connecting to Other SE Asian Countries

Bangkok is the top gateway city for travel to Southeast Asian countries. From there you will find frequent flights to other major cities in Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos. This makes Thailand not only a popular destination stop but also a gateway to its neighboring SE Asian countries.

Booking a private tour with us, we will arrange your transportation within Southeast Asia. Our travel consultant will search the flight schedules, arrange the best connections, and book the air tickets.

Amazing two weeks in Thailand Unforgettable trip in Thailand. The tour was paced well even if some of the places were so incredible you didn't want to leave. Our tour guide, Jamie, was great the whole way through. I cannot recommend highly enough!

Explore Northern Thailand Tour

Overall, I really loved this tour. I loved Sukhothai and the temples that we visited. We stayed at this super cute resort that was absolutely amazing! From there we went to the homestay - that was so much fun, even the part about sleeping on the floor. The two days we spent in Chiang Mai were awesome. Our hotel was right near the night markets and lots of pubs and restaurants. I opted to do the 1/2 day at Jungle Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai and that for me was the best part of the entire trip. There are only 2 things that prevent me from giving this tour 5 stars. 1) One thing that I didn't really enjoy was all of the travel time - I know that the point of the tour is to travel as authentically as possible, but being someone who is quite tall, it was not overly fun to be stuck in a bus for 6 hours with no leg room. I know that it was a part of the itinerary, but I didn't think it would be as bad as that. In addition, our bus had to keep making unscheduled stops to fix the air-conditioning that kept breaking - so it ended up being longer than 6 hours and with no a/c part of the time. So... the travel time between one sight to another was a lot more than I was picturing in my head. 2) The second thing that kind of ruined my trip was the leader. Although she was very knowledgeable, she just didn't seem to be too excited to be with us. She got grumpy when we wouldn't immediately stop talking when she wanted to say something to us; she treated us a bit like we were naughty school children. In addition, at one point she was having a disagreement with one of the other travellers and chose to do that in front of the entire group instead of pulling her aside and doing it privately. She didn't seem too excited to be our guide... it was kind of sad because overall I have heard nothing but good things about the guides with Intrepid. 4/5 stars - it was a great trip, with amazing sights and activities.

(Not gonna mention them here-book for yourselves!) Oh, and the food was always delicious! Either the included meals or anywhere we dined as a group, the food was always tasty. Our tour guide Kanarat (Naa) was fantastic. She was very helpful and friendly and invited our tour group for lunch with her family at her home. The tour was great and flying everywhere was a good idea because it's fast. The only thing that I did not like was the day spent travelling to Chiang Rai, it was way too much driving for nothing and it felt like a wasted day . I really liked my tour guide in Chiang Mai.

This tour was a great way to get some of the highlights of Thailand! The tour guides in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were excellent. We were disappointed that one of the excursions on the original itinerary was not on the final one, nor was it replaced with another, but we did manage to fill up all of the days with activities. When we all eventually return to Thailand, we all know what we want to see more of.

Thailand Highlights 10-Day Package Tour

Thailand Highlights 10-Day Package

Our tour was named Encompassed Bangkok and Phuket. It was an excellent experience and guides are top notch. Our guide in Bangkok, Aurora, was so sweet and helpful. Our driver in Bangkok really took care of us as it was very hot and humid. He offered cold towels and lots of water after each stop. The driver in Phuket was less accommodating but our guide, Ben, was great. We had a small group so we were able to customize a few days when we were tired and wanted to cut short. The floating market was a great place and worth the drive. All the Temples are beautiful. The last full day in Phuket was really busy and could easily be cut in half to spend more time in historic Phuket and one temple. The cooking class was very authentic. I would have liked chairs while we prepped as it was a lot of standing (2.5 hours). Overall this is a great tour company; they’re very responsive anytime you need them and the guides were on time every where, we felt very taken care of and safe. I would definitely book with them again. 5 stars to Aurora and Ben !! Thank you for a wonderful experience.

A patio table with two plates of breakfast pastries and two to-go coffee drinks overlooking a garden at Double You Cafe.

Curator’s statement

Khon Kaen holds a very special place in my heart. It is tucked away in northeast Thailand, and although not a single tourist may know of this place, it is deeply admired and respected by the Thais. I was assigned here to teach English at a primary school for one year. I cried — I wasn't near the beaches, I was far from Bangkok and I had never heard of this place before. But as months went by, I became infatuated with this expanding city, one of the big reasons being for its abundance of (over-the-top) cafés — my go-to weekend activity.

My top 10 cafés* in Khon Kaen

*Not listed in any particular order

Khon Kaen thrives on its café community. There's always the "next best" café to open up and these coffee addicts will follow along to check it off their undying list. Cafés are considered a luxury and ain't cheap. I found myself spending 80 baht ($2.16) on my pad Thai at the market, but 120 baht ($3.24) on a coffee and pastry. In my mind, and like many others, it was worth it. The experience is nothing like what I've ever seen in the US, and I had to immerse myself fully into this weekend indulgence to understand what the hype was all about. Now I get it. And if you're as curious as I am, you will too once you check one, two, three — or all of these places off your list. Let's break them down, shall we?

1. Aura You wouldn't believe this place is right off the highway because it's woven into a forest of enchantment as soon as you step through its garden passageway. The mini waterfalls, the neighboring streams, the foggy mist and the outside tables placed at a distance to give you your own experience with friends and family — you haven't even walked in the door yet. The pink and green decor of furniture and flowers on the first floor, and leading up to the second, will be as warm a welcome as the staff who are there to greet you. The menu is extensive and took me a good 15 minutes to sift through before finally being able to narrow down my decision. Specialty coffee is their main point of sale, but if you're hungry for traditional Thai food, pizza or some baked goods, they have more than enough options to satisfy any belly.

My go-to order: Butterfly pea tea, som tam with shrimp and blueberry timber ring

2. Double you Café My first reaction when pulling into Double you: "C'mon, this can't exist here." This café is a monstrosity of a venue, and certainly can serve as a mini landscape of Tuscany, Italy — right in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The pebbled parking lot, the long stretch of walkway lined with Cypress trees, a pond of lilypads and lotus flowers centrally leading up to its double doors — again, how?? The inside of Double you is complete with luxury-style decor in a "green undertone" kind of theme. Similar to Aura, they specialize in craft coffee, but I couldn't peel my eyes away from the display case of sweets, and fine — the curry chicken also sounds really good. Sitting inside is an experience in itself, but my favorite spot was through the back doors and on either side, where you have outdoor cushions to lay back on while admiring the koi fish pond and misty backdrop of lush green. Play dress-up, and spend two hours or so here just taking pictures and sipping/snacking on as many menu items you can get your hands on.

My go-to order: Signature mixed berry refresher, chicken curry and blueberry cheesecake

3. Neighbour Café Like a good neighbor ... this café is here to make you feel like you're literally walking into the comfort of your friendly next-door neighbor's housewarming party. There's some seating outside on picnic benches, but the coziest and most well-lit atmosphere lies inside in a modern twist of rustic furniture and chic decor. Their food is just as impressive as their coffee, so it's worth grabbing a friend to sit down for lunch and spend an hour or two just chatting life away.

Note: Café parking is just on the street, so it may be difficult to snag a spot — and they don't appreciate you working here, so I'd say leave the laptop at home and use the time to socialize instead.

My go-to order: Matcha latte, garlic fried rice with teriyaki salmon, salted caramel sea-salt brownie

4. 11AM Café and Space Meanwhile, 11AM was my go-to for ever getting any work done. Just off the main road, I found this space and fell in love with its all-white design and natural lighting on both floors (the additional energy boost to my caffeine high). There are also so many aesthetic backdrops to take pictures with your coffee before it gets cold or the ice melts — so get a feel for the place and do a whole walk-around before taking a seat. I don't remember them serving any food, but the selection of coffee and pastries was memorable.

Note: It was overcrowded each of the four times I visited — mostly with people who come solely for the photo shoots — so if you need to get work done in peace and quiet, let yourself up to the second floor to escape the flashing lights.

My go-to order: Thai-style iced coffee and honey lemon cake

5. Godfather Coffee - II Unlike the Thai sun shining radiantly into 11AM, Godfather Coffee II gives off a mysterious and industrial vibe that made me feel like I showed up to the club at 4 pm on a Wednesday. You don't have to know the movie to feel the resemblance — but if you do, appreciate scenes from this classic film projected on the walls (and maybe some subtle clues I may have missed). The coffee is roasted in-house and has a rich and smooth taste, and the presentation was so exquisite it was almost a pity to take a sip. I was fascinated with its menu of variety and creativity of coffee and pastries, all served in a rice basket.

Note: The music is blaring inside, so I struggled to concentrate on getting any work done. An alternative is the outside seating if you need a moment of silence and/or can't read in the dark. Honestly, I would just come back here for the social scene instead.

My go-to order: Affogato and Thai tea croissant

6. From Scratch The Wall I found this place by simply walking by it to go to a different coffee shop and couldn't resist the temptation to just peek through the window at the immaculate display of bread and pastries. I think I came here the most out of all my café visits because the atmosphere is relaxed, yet busy, and the lighting was just this perfect golden balance between luminous and dim. They have two locations and the one near the CentralWorld Mall is much bigger, but has the same menu selection, so it doesn't matter which you choose. What I really like about this location is that it's off the main street in an alleyway surrounded by other shops in a graffiti-artsy sorta atmosphere, so it's fun to walk around for a bit and explore afterwards.

My go-to order: Peanut butter chocolate latte (for all my pb addicts like me) and carrot cake

7. Kyoto Shi Café Now THIS place is really freaking cool. Everyone on my Instagram thought I was in Japan when I posted my experience here because it does really feel like you're transporting to Tokyo off the streets of Khon Kaen. The menu lists off specialty coffee, Japanese food and donuts — which aren't too popular in Thailand, but here, the selection is extensive and impressive, so just try one! There's some seating outside, but I recommend snagging a booth in the back if you can find one. This place was crowded both times I came, and the Khon Kaen University (KKU) students usually are the ones to overcrowd it, so I would definitely avoid the weekend for a more peaceful experience. And my suggestion? Right across the street from this café is the inviting Bueng Kan Nakhon Reservoir. Take your drink with you on the boardwalk to loop around this impressive spot that has served as a community get-together and dinosaur statue memoir. It's about two miles to loop and boasts some beautiful views from every angle — especially at sunrise and sunset!

My go-to order: Kyoto matcha and a sweet cream donut

8. miti café Similar to the all-white everything at 11AM Café, but miti is like stepping into a new dimension of a relaxed and chill atmosphere. This box-shaped building was the ideal work environment for me and my laptop. Both the inside and outside seating are spacious and shady, so it depends on the level of Thai heat that day when making your seat selection. I really enjoyed my shot of espresso for a quick perk-me-up, but the selection of dessert-style coffees are the most popular to sip on.

Note: This café is pricier than many of the other places mentioned

My go-to order: Salted caramel cappuccino and macadamia nut croissant (so gooey!)

9. White Buns Café and Bistro Ahhh, one of the last cafés I discovered during my one-year stay in Khon Kaen, and I can only say I was disappointed I didn't find it sooner. The Latvian owner and operator turned this place into a four-story hideout for anyone in any mood. The first floor gives off a 1970s diner vibe with a fully equipped bar and a fantastic choice of music playing in the background. Make sure you get there before 2 pm, because the breakfast is unmatched. I could only rule out two things I didn't want out of the 25-ish options, so you may have to come back more than once. Ask for a tour upstairs to push yourself through a bookshelf into a hidden game room, and onto the neon lights in the "clouds" and the top-floor tiki bar overlooking the city. Obviously, while you're here, it's better to stick to the local Thai stuff, but if you're needing a piece of home, the coffee, Western food and desserts are such a privilege. It's an experience you can't have anywhere else in northeast Thailand (that I know of).

My go-to order: Yuzu espresso, eggs benny and truffle risotto

10. SicXcup Coffee Now, I personally never got the chance to try this place since it just recently opened, but my closest Thai friend told me it was her new favorite. The price is reasonable, the inside has both a sleek and modern design and the barista is also the owner, so the coffee is made with lots of love.

Her go-to order: Latte with their signature fruity coffee bean

Honorable mention

Columbo Craft Village is also a café, book shop, ceramic workshop, ramen noodle shop and cozy garden vibe all combined into one homey experience right at KKU. Check it out during the weekends to hang out with friends, make art, sip coffee and buy some homemade souvenirs that you can't find anywhere else.

Day trip option

If you're feeling bold and ready for a greater challenge to take you further into café exploration, look no further than Ma de Phu Wiang Café.

About an hour drive west of central Khon Kaen lies a café that very few tourists visit, but that entertains a mansion of a café in the middle of what many consider to be "nowhere." I loved walking through the spacious landscape of vibrant gardens and dinosaur statues — lots of photo ops!. I didn't get to tour the private home on site, but from the pictures it looks exquisite, so I definitely recommend booking a tour as soon as you arrive.

There is also a hotel on the premises if you choose to spend a night before making the journey back to Khon Kaen. The café itself was massive, but even on a Saturday night, we were the only people there coming out of high season. They serve a variety of Thai cuisine, desserts and specialty coffee. It was nothing special, but the environment we were in made it worth every bite.

Note: While you're out in the Phu Wiang district, take a pit stop at Phu Wiang National Park (known for holding the world's largest dinosaur graveyard) or the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum (which highlights the discovery of some of the first fossils in Southeast Asia).

Need to Know

The cafés are just one of the highlights of Khon Kaen, but if you're planning on spending a couple of days here and need some advice on what to do after your morning coffee, send me a message and let's get in touch!
