Klamath River Rafting

We are a small guide owned and operated company offering whitewater rafting on the beautiful Klamath River – from mellow to heart-pounding, from Half-day excursions to Multi-day wilderness vacations. The Klamath River is the second largest in California and features more than 180 miles of premier whitewater rafting.

With its origin located near Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, the Klamath River carves out a beautiful and diverse river canyon through one of the most unique geological regions on Earth.  It journeys through the ancient lava flows of the Western Cascades, the cool granite of the Klamath-Siskiyou Mountains and finally through the lush Coast Range of Northern California.

The name “Klamath” means “swiftness” in Chinook, and swift is a perfect description of our Upper Klamath Rafting Trips.  It is our most popular day trip and is also the home of our unique 2-day Safari Trip. The Upper ‘K’ offers by far the most exciting summer rafting on the entire west coast.  It’s fun, addictive, and draws first-time boaters and world-class paddlers alike.  This run features more than 30 rapids ranging from Class III to IV+, including two rapids each over a football field long.

Our Lower Klamath down-river trips take you through the most scenic and secluded portions of the rugged Siskiyou Mountains.  This portion of the river features fun, splashy whitewater (even more exciting in kayaks), sandy beaches, amazing swimming holes and a staggering amount of wildlife.  Also one the finest side hikes in the west – the rainforest setting of Ukonom Falls.  It is a perfect river for families, beginners and relaxed adventurers.

Visit our About Us and Why Momentum pages to learn more.  You will enjoy world-class river trips in small groups with unparalleled personal service, a handcrafted quality and attention to detail, organic meals, and one of the most experienced (and friendly) guide staff’s in the world. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced paddler, join us for a trip on the Klamath River like no other!

Below are all our Klamath River trips. Please visit our Home Page for an introduction to Momentum and all our river adventures.

Your guides are true professionals, incredibly hard working, and just plain great people. The meal/camping situation was astoundingly good, especially given the remoteness and duration of the trip. And of course the scenery was mind-blowing, and the itinerary (loved the layover days) allowed for maximum enjoyment. The guides are very experienced and great company, the food is excellent, and they make sure you have a wonderful ride without compromising safety in any way. They go the extra mile on everything e.g. providing gluten free food for one of our party, sending out a guide early in the morning to get the best camping sites, playing games with the kids in the evenings and so on. An extra notch above any other rafting company we have been with. Highly recommended." --> "The Best – Our family has been on two rafting trips with Momentum, the Klamath and the Rogue, and they were really first rate. Klamath Wild and Scenic 3-day

The Klamath River seems to be a destination where great stories come from.  We have stories of big adventure on early season trips when the water is high, the waves are big and we are running “hotshot” high-water trips.  Then we have an entirely different kind of story from later in the summer, the stories of six year old kids going on their first big rafting adventure and falling in love with being splashed in roller-coaster rapids and sitting around the campfire at night.

We love all of these stories for different reasons.  We are passionate about taking people on the big adventure trips where they can challenge themselves as the seek out the adrenaline rush we all love. Our early season high-water “Hotshot” trips are perfect for this.  We are also passionate about creating spaces for parents and their kids to build those memories of playing by the river; memories both will cherish for a lifetime. The Klamath River in later June, July and August is a family rafting paradise.  Warm water, splashy rapids and plenty of swimming holes to spend those priceless times together.

The Klamath River uniquely offers opportunities for both of these stories, the adventure and the family.  So give us a call today and learn about why the Klamath River is the premier multi-day river adventure in California and why National Geographic Adventure named this trip one of their top 10 family vacations.

Trip at a glance

Great trip for families looking to raft and camp together. Perfect for the younger kids.

Dates / Rates

Klamath river 3-day trips.

Friday Starts - Adults $1149, Youth $1049

Trip Start Dates:

Standard Trips - Monday and Friday starts May through July

Youth rate applies to anyone 17 years old and under.

Please meet us at the Happy Camp Ranger Station at 10:15 AM.  Your car will be left here during the duration of the trip.  It is parked next to the Forest Service employee barracks and has historically been a safe place to leave cars.  About a half mile from the ranger station is our launch point.  From there we float with everything for the trip for the following two or three days.  At the conclusion of the float we will use our van to return you to your car in Happy Camp.

Detailed Itinerary for the Klamath River

Exact itineraries for the Klamath River fluctuate based on the river levels, the time of year and the group of participants.  All of our trips on the Klamath River include camping, either in USFS campgrounds or occasionally riverside, depending on the group. Not all groups will go down to run the Ikes section of the Klamath. We leave this open to the guides on the trip and the group they are traveling with.

Sample Itinerary – Some trips will do two days on the Ikes section or even one day on Clear Creek – A tributary to the Klamath River.

Day 1: Meet the guides at the Happy Camp at the ranger station at 10:15 AM. Your vehicle will remain here and you will transfer your luggage into our van to be transported to camp (unless on a downriver trip in which case your gear will be packed in a dry bag). From the Ranger station to the put-in is only a couple of minutes.

At the put-in on the Klamath River your guide will give you a thorough safety and paddling orientation before heading downstream towards the many Class II and III rapids.  Expect today to be filled with exciting waves and great scenery. Class III rapids such as Kanaka, Devils Toenail and The Trench fill out the morning. Around lunchtime the group will pull over so the guides can make the first riverside lunch of sandwiches salads, cookies and other snacks. After lunch the group will continue down through more thrilling Klamath River whitewater interrupted by big pools for relaxing before reaching the takeout for the day.

At the takeout we load into the van for a quick drive to our base camp for the trip.  In camp play some Frisbee with the kids, swim, or enjoy a beverage as the guides prepare your three-course dinner. Finish a hot Dutch oven dessert before you lay back with a great glass of wine, re-live the stories of the day around the fire, and then head into your tent where your cot is waiting for you.

Day 2: Start with a fresh cup of coffee and a hot breakfast complete with freshly baked cinnamon rolls.  After breakfast lather on the sunscreen and climb into the van. Today is another day of exciting Klamath River rapids such as Ferry Point, Independence Creek, and Dragons Tooth. Picture yourself floating between rapids, laying back in your boat and relaxing in the hot sun while the kids try to splash you from the raft.

If the group is up for it the afternoon will include a technical hike/climb up to the falls at Ukanom creek for some swimming and pictures. After your hike and one more exciting rapid the two day will arrive at camp.  Camp tonight is typically a beautiful camp with a big swimming hole and lots of sand for games.

  • Alternate – High-water groups will likely head down river to the confluence of the Cal-Salmon and Klamath River for a big-water day challenging the series of rapids known as the Ikes.

Day 3: More whitewater and exploring.  Some groups choose to re-run a previous section on this day and some prefer to explore a new section of whitewater.  Day three is up to the group to decide how they want to spend the day.

Where to Meet Orange Torpedo Trips

We meet at the Forest Service Ranger Station in Happy Camp California. We meet in the parking lot at 10:15 AM. Your vehicle will be left here parked next to the forest service employee barracks.

Accommodations

We recommend staying the night before in Yreka California, if coming from the south and Ashland, Oregon if coming from the north.  Then drive into Happy Camp in the morning. While staying in Yreka leaves you with a 1.5 hour drive in the morning it has many more lodging opportunities than Happy Camp. In Yreka we recommend:

  • Miners Inn/Best Western Yreka California  530-842-4355

If you want to camp in the Happy Camp area the night before or after your trip there are several campgrounds in the Kalmath River corridor. The one we prefere and the one closest to the meeting place in the morning is Curly Jack Campground

Fly into either Medford Oregon or Redding California. Flying into Sacramento California puts you about 2 hours further away but it’s often significantly cheaper.

Typical Weather

Southern Oregon and Northern California are known for great summer weather. The Klamath River is especially known for hot weather making swimming ideal. While rain does occasionally sneak in during the summer months it is rare and usually only stays for a short time. Averages are:

Averages are:

  • May · High (F)76 Low (F)41 Avg. Rainfall 1.55 in.
  • June · High (F)84 Low (F)47 Avg. Rainfall .66 in.
  • July · High (F)92 Low (F)51 Avg. Rainfall .31 in.
  • August · High (F)92 Low (F)51 Avg. Rainfall .54 in.

When you meet us in Happy Camp your luggage will be moved into our van for transport to our camp.  We will have limited space in the van so please pack efficiently in a reasonably sized bag.

We strongly recommend leaving lap-tops, tablets and other tech devices at home.

What to pack

On the river.

  • 2 or 3 swimsuits or shorts and top (cotton not recommended)
  • Sports sandals or hard-soled wetsuit booties
  • Synthetic paddling gloves

  • Polypro, synthetic or hydro-skin shirt (nice for mornings and chilly days)
  • Water Bottle (1 liter) with carabiner
  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • Sunglasses with strap (consider bringing two pairs)
  • OTT will supply wetsuits and splash-tops for chilly mornings
  • 2 pair pants & shorts (3 shirts)
  • Fleece jacket or sweatshirt
  • Light rain jacket
  • Sleeping bag (can be provided) (synthetic material recommended - rated to 45F)
  • Small towel
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera with extra film or memory cards and batteries
  • Personal hygiene items

Q: Gratuity, is it common to give tips and how much?

Gratuity is certainly appreciated but by no means required. At the conclusion of a trip please just give any gratuity to the head guide who will divide it evenly among the crew. Standard restaurant gratuity percentages tend not apply on these trips, so what we have seen over the years on the Klamath River 3-day trip is an average of approx: $50-$70 per person in a group. So a group of four would be about $200-$280. That is what we typically see on this trip as an average, please don’t feel obligated. Also, when thinking about gratuities, please feel free to tip the staff at the lodges during your stay there.

Q: How much is the deposit and when is the balance for my trip due?

As on all OTT trips, this trip requires a 30% deposit.  The remaining balance is due 30 days before the trip launches. Upon making your reservation you have the option to set up your credit card to automatically run the balance on the due date.

Q: What is the typical guide to guest ratio?

On the River we typically have one guide for every three guests on a trip

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

On single day trips your $10 per person deposit is refundable up to 72 hours before your trip. Cancellations within 72 hours of the scheduled trip launch will be subject to loss of their deposit.

On all of our multi day rafting trips we do not offer refunds on deposits or balance payments. We strongly encourage all customers to purchase travel insurance through travel guard to help protect your travel investment against the things that come up in life. It’s a small additional price for the comfort to know that if something comes up (illness, work change, etc) you will have the ability to recover your significant travel investment. Get a  Travel Guard Quote Here .

Q: Will I have cell service during the trip?

NOPE. One of the best parts of a wilderness river trip is that your phone will not work. No cell service, 3G, wireless or any of the above. It’s a beautiful thing.

Q: Can I switch boats during the trip?

Yes, but with some limitation. If you start in an inflatable kayak and decide quickly that it’s not for you. We will get you out of the kayak. If you start in a raft and decide you want to kayak, we cannot always guarantee that ability. Based on what people tell us they want to do we pack a specific amount of equipment and bring an appropriate number of guides for a trip. Sometimes that does not leave much room to add kayakers mid-trip. People will often be willing to switch out throughout the trip, but if someone signs up to tackle the river in an inflatable kayak, we want to make sure they have chance to paddle the entire trip if they want.

Q: Does everything for the trip go down the river with the group?

Everything for the trip will go down the river. When you pack a dry bag at the put-in, that will be all of your stuff for the duration of the trip. All food, drinks, and camping equipment will be transported on our rafts for the entirety of the trip.

Q: How many years have we been running the rivers?

Orange Torpedo Trips was founded on the Rogue River in 1969 by rafting visionary, Jerry Bentley. Within just a few years OTT had spread to numerous rivers throughout the Northwest including the Klamath River, the Main Salmon River and Snake Rivers.

Q: What age is considered “Youth”?

Youth is 17 and under.

Q: What is an Orange Torpedo?

An Orange Torpedo is our custom-designed inflatable kayak. We have brought our 45 years of guided inflatable kayaking experience into our partnership with world renown raft builder SOTAR to introduce an industry leading high performance, beginner friendly inflatable kayak which we exclusively use.

Q: What is our average tour guide tenure?

We are proud to have one of the highest head guide tenure’s in the industry. The majority of our multi-day trip guides are teachers in the off-season. This off river profession makes them naturally great guides with a desire to teach our customers about the rivers, but it also makes them stable year to year guides. The average tenure, with our company, of our head guides is 29 years.

Q: What types of boats do you use?

As on most of our trips we offer a variety of river craft to choose from. Orange Torpedo Trips is best known for inflatable kayaking with 80% of our customers choosing this as the way to go down the river, but on this trip we offer 3 types of river craft on this trip. Watch the video to learn more about our 3-boats.

Orange Torpedo

Learn to paddle your own inflatable kayak (Torpedo). We have guides in Torpedo’s teaching you how to paddle and leading you through the rapids in a 4 to 1 ratio. If you happen to fall out the guides have you out of the river in seconds. 45+ years of doing it on the Rogue River and tens of thousands of satisfied returning customers prove that it is extremely fun.

Paddle Raft

A more traditional type of rafting, paddle rafts are a great way to go if you still want to do some work, but think the torpedo is just a little to much. Work with a team of your friends paddling the big boat through the rapids as the guide sits in the back to help navigate.

Hop on an oared raft and ride in luxury. This is the relaxed way to travel. If taking in the scenery and letting the guide do the work is how you vacation then hop on board. This is how kids 4-11 years old will usually travel.

Q: What paperwork do I need to sign on this trip? – USFS

On this trip you will be required to sign an acknowledgement of risk form.  You can find a copy of form here: Acknowledgement of Risk

Klamath River Rafting Trips

Lower klamath river rafting, a true multi-day wilderness rafting trip.

Join Raft California on one of the best Klamath River Rafting Trips! Our 3 day Lower Klamath River rafting & camping trip makes for a fun, and memorable vacation!

Trips meet in Northern California near Oregon in the town of Happy Camp at the river access put in. Once you have unloaded your gear we will have you drive just a stones throw up the road to park your car at the Forest Service office, we will follow you and bring you back to the river. Back at the put in we will have you put all your gear into dry bags. There is a designated Gear Boat that we store most of the stuff we bring on the river (tents, sleeping bags, food, kitchen items etc).

Each night we will set up camp on a new riverside beach, where we will enjoy dinner that evening and breakfast the following morning. You will fall asleep and wake up to sounds of the river.

While rafting on the Lower Klamath River you will encounter several Class 2/2+ rapids. There are a couple Class 3/3+ rapids, Rattlesnake (aka Kanaka Falls) and Dragons Tooth! If you have younger kids it is typically suggested to walk them around these bigger rapids.

Great For Families!

Suitable for young kids ages 5+. A fun outdoor adventure vacation for all ages as well! Add an Inflatable Kayak rental to your trip for an added challenge (ideal for teens and adventurous adults). There is no WiFi here in the wilderness, so no need for cell phones or tablets for 3 whole days!!! Unplug and unwind while enjoying your time with the family.

Family & Corporate Groups welcome!

Although trip sizes are limited to a max. of 30 people, these trips are great for mixed groups with varying abilities. Non swimmers are welcome for this adventure.

Relax – we do most of the work!

All participants will be paddling during the trip, there is a lot of time to rest & unwind. We do all the cooking, as well as set up the kitchen at camp each night. Guests typically set up their own tents when we arrive at camp each night, but if you need assistance we are happy to help.

Bring your Fishing Pole

The Lower Klamath River is well knows for it’s amazing fishing! Cast your line from the sandy beaches we camp at for a chance to catch steelhead & salmon. Please be sure to bring your fishing license.

Step 1 of 2

One guest summed it up perfectly; a Lower Klamath rafting trip is “the perfect entry-level river trip, guaranteed to cure anyone suffering from nature deficit disorder or simply looking for some relaxation and family bonding time.”

Treasured for its scenic beauty, diverse wildlife, and recreational opportunities, the Klamath was one of the first rivers in California to be granted National “Wild and Scenic River” status and is beloved for rafting and fishing.

On this Klamath River rafting adventure, we explore a special stretch of the Lower Klamath near Happy Camp, CA where the water bubbles with bouncy, easy rapids and warm, pleasant swimming holes. Often adored by OARS’ littlest guests, it’s an ideal choice for those with young children interested in a family adventure vacation or introduction to whitewater rafting.

As is true for so many other California rivers, the region is steeped in history. Gold miners and colorful characters flooded the area in the mid-1800s, and old mining sites line the river in various places. When they’re not frolicking in the water, your kids will become completely absorbed in trying to find their fortune with a gold pan, and you’ll have fun watching them try. The focus of our family-friendly Lower Klamath River rafting trip is to help kids gain confidence and interest in the outdoors while the adults kick back and relax.

Trip Highlights

  • Fun & friendly Class II Klamath River rafting in Northern California
  • 2 nights comfy riverside camping in a scenic river canyon
  • Healthy and delicious guide-prepared meals
  • Warm water ideal for swimming, water fights & inflatable kayaking
  • Easy hikes, blackberry picking & abundant wildlife

We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and flexible schedule. Every Lower Klamath River rafting trip is different depending upon the group, other trips on the water, camp locations, and sometimes the weather. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like:

Meet your trip leader and fellow travel mates in Happy Camp, CA at Angler’s Klamath River Resort Inn mid-morning. We’ll repack gear into waterproof bags and then shuttle to the put-in where we’ll have a safety orientation before boarding the rafts and inflatable kayaks to take on the rapids. After a few fun splashes, we’ll pull over along the riverbank for a delicious lunch before continuing downriver to our campsite.

Once in camp, the guides will set up the kitchen and begin preparing a sumptuous dinner. There will be time to set up your individual tent site, get to know each other, fish, swim, play, or sample the delectable hors d’oeuvres the guides have prepared. Dessert and perhaps a tall tale will follow the evening meal.

The next morning, wake-up to the wonderful smells of coffee and breakfast. After packing up our gear, we will continue downstream, and before long we’ll arrive at our biggest rapid for the trip, Otter’s Playpen. We will take a short hike to scout the rapid before confronting it in our rafts and inflatable kayaks. The afternoon is filled with splashy rapids, calm pools for swimming, and perhaps even an opportunity to jump off a rock into the river before reaching camp and enjoying one more night under the stars together.

After another delicious breakfast, everyone prepares a pack-lunch to enjoy later. The final day offers the mildest whitewater and is a great time for younger or more timid folks to try out the inflatable kayaks. As the noon-hour approaches, some might munch on their pack-lunch while enjoying the final serene stretch of our Lower Klamath rafting adventure. Others may eat their lunch on the grassy knoll at Angler’s Klamath River Resort Inn where our trip ends. After the trip, your guides will help you unload your personal things and you’ll have ample time to head back into civilization.

The number and variety of boats on an OARS trip will vary based on water levels, the number of participants, and other factors we take into account when planning your adventure. Please be aware that in doing so we will ask you to share boat time with your fellow travelers. We don’t assign boats, nor can we guarantee exactly which crafts we bring, but trust us to provide you with the best possible mix for you and others on your trip.

Learn more about the OARS Fleet and the boats that may be a part of your experience: oar raft, paddle raft, inflatable kayak .

After each active day on the river, we pull ashore to camp for the night. Our first task is to unload the boats using a fire-line of crew and guests to expedite the process. Individuals then collect their waterproof bags and locate an area on the beach to camp for the night.

While you put up your tent, the guides will set up the kitchen and central dining/seating area with camp chairs. They will also locate a secluded area away from camp to set up the portable toilet, where privacy is assured.

As guides prepare dinner, hors d’oeuvres are served. This is an opportunity to relax, enjoy a drink if you wish, and reflect on the day with your fellow traveling companions.

In the morning, the first wake-up call lets you know that coffee, hot water for tea or cocoa, juice, fresh fruit, and cold cereal are ready. You can fill your mug and grab a bite, then begin to pack up your personal belongings and sleep gear as the guides prepare breakfast.

After breakfast, the entire camp is broken down and packed up. Once the guides have all of the gear loaded back onto the boats, we’ll head downstream to see what new adventures await us.

More info about Meals & Dietary Restrictions can be found on our Trip Resources page.

The weather in Northern California is typically quite favorable during the summer months. The days are long and typically dry, making for a pleasant journey. Like anywhere, though, the weather can be unpredictable, and one should always be prepared for rain.

If you must cancel your reservation after the rescission period described above, your cancellation fee will be determined according to the schedule below.

We regret that we cannot make exceptions to the cancellation policy for any reason, including foul weather, poor air quality, wildfire activity, acts of terrorism, civil unrest, or personal emergencies. For these reasons, we strongly urge you to consider purchasing a travel protection plan .

Canceled Trips

OARS reserves the right to cancel any trip due to insufficient registration or other factors that make the trip impractical to operate. In such instances, we will inform you at least 30 days prior to departure. Do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until you have verified with OARS that your trip is confirmed.

If a trip must be canceled or postponed due to force majeure (factors outside the control of OARS), OARS will provide full credit for payments made toward future travel, or a refund less the initial deposit amount and any non-refundable payments made on your behalf to 3rd-party suppliers. OARS will make good faith efforts to recover deposits made on your behalf to 3rd-party suppliers; however, we cannot guarantee recovery of any or all of the advance payments made. OARS is not responsible for expenses incurred by participants in preparation for a canceled trip.

If you need to move your reservation to a different trip during the same season, or to a credit account for the following year, there is a $25/person fee up until 90 days before departure for a one-time transfer of your payment. Transfer requests made 89 days or less before departure will be treated like a cancellation according to the schedule above.

Lower Klamath Rafting

Northern california's klamath river, trip details, common questions, trip itinerary.

klamath river rafting trips

THREE-DAY Lower Klamath Trips

Price: $1095/adult, $1045/youth Meet Time: 10:00 a.m. at Klamath River Resort Inn in Happy Camp, California Season: May through July Minimum Age: 6 Years Old

Northern California’s Lower Klamath is a spectacular introduction to multi-day rafting trips. The river features fairly mellow whitewater with just a handful of more difficult rapids. Our Lower Klamath rafting trips feature two nights of outstanding river-side camping with a menu featuring local, organic, and tasty food. Days are spent relaxing in rafts or taking on rapids in an inflatable kayak.

The Klamath originates in Oregon, tumbles through the Cascade Mountains, and then begins its course west through the Klamath-Siskiyou National Forest. It’s here that our trips depart from a small town called Happy Camp located on the banks of the Klamath River. Pushing off and heading downstream, this stretch of river showcases beautiful scenery, wildlife, and some of the Klamath’s best rapids.

Our travel downstream will be in rafts or inflatable kayaks. Mid-day we’ll stop for lunch and soak in the sun before making our way to camp. Our camps are incredibly comfortable – we provide all camping equipment including large tents, sleeping bags, and comfy sleeping pads. Guides do all the cooking and clean-up, which leaves ample time for you to relax, go for a swim, or simply enjoy a glass of wine or microbrew beer.

Lower Klamath rafting trips meet at 10:00 a.m. on the morning of your trip at the Klamath River Resort. It’s recommended that our guests stay at the Klamath River Resort the night prior to their trip. On our final day your vehicle is shuttled to the take out location or we will transport you back to Happy Camp.

2024 Lower Klamath Rafting Trip Schedule

Reservations are held with a non-refundable deposit of 20%. The remaining balance is due 60 days prior to your trip date. To protect your investment, we highly recommend Travel Protection . Please read our multi-day cancellation policy prior to booking your trip.

Trip meeting location: klamath river resort inn.

Our Lower Klamath multi-day trips meet at the Klamath River Resort Inn at 10:00 a.m. the morning of your trip. The Klamath River Resort Inn has lodging available and is a convenient place to stay the night prior to your trip.

Medford International Airport is serviced by United Airlines, Delta, Allegiant and Horizon Air. Flights inbound to Medford start from San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Denver, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Please plan your flight to arrive the day before your river trip. For your return flight, please do not plan to fly out on the same day as your trip gets off the river.

During our pre-trip meeting (10:00 a.m. at Klamath River Resort Inn on the day of your trip) we will provide you with a large dry bag (“camp bag”) and a small dry bag (“day bag”). These waterproof bags will carry your belongings for the duration of our time on the river. The large dry bag measures 16″ in diameter and 25″ tall when closure is rolled to maximum volume.

Professional Guide Tips and Tricks

“Pack your clothing into a soft duffel bag or laundry bag so that it is easily fits in the dry bag next to other items. Use small ziplock bags to organize medicine and toiletries. My ‘must have’ is a pillow. Bring one and you’ll sleep like a king (or queen).” – Nick Pabst, Indigo Creek Outfitters

Dietary Requests and Food Allergies

With advance notice we are happy to accommodate most dietary requests. At the time of your reservation we try to collect as much information as possible to make your trip perfect for you. This includes food preferences, requests, and allergies. If you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to update your roster information, please call our office at 541-282-4535 or email [email protected].

We typically have a few different boats to choose from:

1. Oar boats – these rafts carry the majority of our gear and also provide a comfortable place to kick back and relax as your guide rows the boat downstream.

2. Paddle boats – these rafts are more participatory and passengers will have a paddle to help move the boat downstream. A guide in the back controls the raft with oars while giving instruction to the crew.

3. Inflatable kayaks (aka “duckies) – The most active way to head downstream is in an inflatable kayak. These boats are fast, super maneuverable, and an absolute blast to run through rapids. You’ll follow a paddle boat and the guide will give you pointers for each rapid.

Over the course of each day you will have the opportunity to change boats.

“Everyone should try out the inflatable kayaks at some point during the trip. If you are nervous, talk to a guide about ‘testing’ one at camp the first night. That way you can get a feel for the boat and how stable they are without actually heading downstream through rapids. Practicing in flat water at camp will build your confidence. Before you know it you’ll be charging through rapids.” – Tyler “TJ” Vandehey, Indigo Creek Outfitters

What is the typical weather like on the Lower Klamath?

Mornings can be cool (down to 50 degrees) and afternoons can be hot (100 degrees), so having a variety of clothing will help you be comfortable.

Average Highs / Lows in fahrenheit April: 68 / 37 May: 76 / 41 June: 84 / 47 July: 92 / 51 August: 92 / 51 September: 86 / 46 October: 74 / 39

The Lower Klamath is dam-controlled by the Iron Gate Dam.

In the United States, most rivers are measured in “Cubic Feet Per Second,” or in river guide lingo “CFS.” One cubic foot is similar to the box a basketball is packaged in. Here is the current and predicted flow from Agness:

klamath river rafting trips

Yes, absolutely. Cans are best but we can also take glass bottles. We have safe storage space in dry boxes and coolers. For obvious safety reasons, we do not provide access to alcoholic beverages while on the river.

“Don’t put your bottle of wine in your dry bag. It will break and your clothes and sleeping bag will smell like white wine for the rest of the trip. Give it to a guide and we’ll put it in a cooler for you.” – Thorn Lyons, Indigo Creek Outfitters

The large dry bag measures 16″ in diameter and 25″ tall when closure is rolled to maximum volume. We also provide a smaller dry bag that you have access to throughout the day. Please limit your personal items to these bags. If you have additional items we can probably accommodate them, but please contact our office so we know ahead of time. Call us at 541-282-4535 or [email protected].

We are proud to offer the best sleeping pads made for river trips to our guests. These are “Jack’s Plastic Super Paco Sleeping Pads” that are ultra-comfortable, thick, and extremely durable. They are, without question, the most comfortable sleeping pad offered by any outfitter on the Lower Klamath.

“Since Paco Pads are waterproof and inflatable, try floating on yours in an eddy next to camp when the afternoon heat peaks.” – Emily Berlant, Indigo Creek Outfitters

Depending on where we camp, there will either be an outhouse or porta-potty set-up near camp. If we have a porta-potty, we always will have it set-up in a private location that is easily accessed from camp. We use an indicator (normally a paddle) to show whether the “bathroom” is in use.

“At some point before the sun goes down, scout out the path to the bathroom. When it’s the middle of the night you’ll appreciate the foresight in knowing exactly where it’s located, rather than looking for it in the dark.” – Kacy Carlson, Indigo Creek Outfitters

Spiders, snakes, and Bears – Oh my!

We’ll be traveling through an area that is home to many creatures. It is very common over the course of our trips to see bear, deer, bald eagles, and other wildlife. For the most part, these animals are harmless and not interested in what we are doing. We do take precautions to keep human and wildlife interactions to a minimum and these will be discussed by our guides before your trip and at camp.

Yes, absolutely. We’ve had guitars, harmonicas, banjos, and even a bagpipe on the river. Let our office know ahead of time if you will need a special waterproof bag for your instrument.

Ready, set, go!

Your trip on the Lower Klamath will take you through a beautiful river canyon nestled against the Klamath River Mountain Range. All of our trips start and end at the same place, but the details for each day may vary due to the same natural factors that make rivers so appealing – natural changes like water levels and weather may cause us to adjust our itinerary for safety reasons and to enhance your trip. Below is a sample itinerary of an Indigo Creek Outfitters trip on the Lower Klamath.

Day 1: Forest Lodge Motel to Camp (Mile 0 to 8.5)

On the day of your trip we will meet you at the Klamath River Resort Inn at 10:00 a.m. Most of our guests stay the night prior to their trip at the Klamath River Resort Inn or in the nearby area.

10:00 a.m. – Look for an Indigo Creek Outfitters bus or truck in the parking area at Klamath River Resort Inn. After introductions, our guides will provide you with a large dry bag for you to pack your items. Additionally, you’ll receive a smaller dry “day bag” that can be accessible throughout the day. The large dry bag will be stored in our “camp boat” and will be downstream of the group, so it’s important to not pack anything you may need during the day in this bag.

Once you have packed your bags, we will move your vehicle to to the overnight parking area (it will stay at Klamath River Resort Inn for the duration of the trip). From the Klamath River Resort Inn, we’ll drive the group to our boat launch, at the mouth of Indian Creek in Happy Camp. There you’ll be introduced to the remaining crew, we’ll do a pre-trip “safety talk,” hop in the rafts and begin our trip downstream.

Over the course of the day you’ll be able to move from one boat to another.

12:30 p.m. – We’ll stop for lunch mid-day. Our food is delicious and we can accommodate most food preferences or allergies (let us know ahead of time please). Over the course of the trip you will be surprised by the quality of our dishes and variety of foods our guides are able to prepare in a wilderness setting.

Stopped for lunch

That afternoon… A typical afternoon on the Klamath will include a couple hours of river time as well as a scenic or historical stop to take a breather.

klamath river rafting trips

A paddle boat goes through a rapid on the Lower Klamath

We will be arriving at our first night camp around 3:30 p.m. Your tent will have been set-up and our camping area will have been converted to a home-away-from-home, including a dining table, chairs, and kitchen. A bathroom is easily accessed and is located in a private area a short walk from camp.

5:00 p.m. – Appetizers are ready. Kick back and relax. Go on a short hike. Drink some wine (or Oregon microbrew, or soda, or water). Play horseshoes. Go for a swim. Take a nap.

6:00 p.m. – Dinner is ready. It’s going to be a great meal so dig in, have seconds, and leave the dishes to us. Have some dessert and then relax around the campfire.

There is something about being outside all day, along the river, and eating delicious and healthy food, being away from electronics and out of cell phone range, that leads to a great night of sleep. Don’t be surprised if you turn in early.

Day 2: Camp to Camp (8.5 to 15)

In the morning… Wake up to the sound of the river. There’s no beating the quiet and peacefulness of morning on the river. Long before the sun begins to heat up the river canyon we’ll have a big pot of coffee ready for you. Our guides drink coffee – a lot of it – and if you are a coffee drinker you’ll appreciate our local “cowboy” coffee. If you prefer tea there will be a variety of teas available. Have a cup or two or three or four while our crew prepares breakfast.

During breakfast, an Indigo Creek guide will describe the day ahead and give you an overview of what to expect. While we’re doing the dishes and packing up the kitchen you can start packing your bag and getting ready for a day on the river. Put some sunblock on, fill up your water bottle and maybe grab one more cup of coffee. Our guides are packing up the boats and we’ll be on the water shortly…

There are a number of fun rapids this morning. After lunch we’ll run Dragon’s Tooth, the largest rapid of the trip. Next is a hike up Ukonom Creek for to the gorgeous Ukonom Falls. Keep your camera accessible because this section of river has a ton of wildlife (look for bear, deer, osprey, otter, and bald eagle).

The river calms as we leave Ukonom Creek and head to camp. We’ll arrive at our home-away-from-home around 4:00 p.m. Like the previous night, we’ll settle in, enjoy a glass of wine, eat a well-earned dinner, and tell tales of the river before dozing off to a good nights sleep.

Day 3: Camp to Klamath River Resort Inn

This morning on the river is similar to the previous day (hearty breakfast, lots of coffee, and a beautiful stretch of river), but with the knowledge that you’ll be returning to civilization – to your car, cell service, and a paved road headed back home. After breakfast we’ll float a short distance to take out, pack up the van, and begin the short drive back to the Klamath River Resort Inn in Happy Camp.

We are normally back to the Klamath River Resort Inn around 2:00 p.m.

Upper Klamath River

About upper klamath river rafting, klamath river summer 2024 update:.

All Lower Klamath trips are being referred to our Deschutes River 3 Day river rafting trip which offers a similar experience with Class 2-3 rapids – a perfect trip for families ages 4+. For recommendations on alternatives to our Upper Klamath River trips please contact us . See more details on this change below.

The Klamath Dam removal project, which began in 2023, has affected both the Upper and Lower Klamath portions of our whitewater rafting trips for the 2024 season. The Upper Klamath is directly affected by the location of the dam removal while the Lower Klamath portion is seeing an increase of sediment downstream from the project. After connecting with local agencies, and considering the best course of action for the project and guests, we will not be running whitewater trips on either section of the Klamath River this summer. We are in full support of the Klamath Dam removal project and reviving a river to its natural state. We will continue to provide updates on the project via our blog.

the Rivers we run

Our vision is to create a sustainable and equitable reality where our rivers are enjoyed and protected, a place where families and friends can be inspired and challenged.

Tributary Whitewater Tours has been running rivers since we were first founded in 1978. Since we opened 40+ years ago we have expanded to include Adventure Connection, Mariah Wilderness Expeditions, High Desert River Outfitters, Canyon Outfitters and are the parent company of Raft California and Raft Oregon. While some things have changed over the years, Tributary remains a family-run small business with the same passion for the river and the mission of leading others to experience it.
