This laptop backpack is suitable for various sizes of laptops up to 17”. It features two primary storage areas, a 360-degree padded laptop compartment, and quick access pockets. The 21L backpack is made from durable 270x500D blended weave polyester.

It comes with a plush fleece lined laptop compartment, large organizer compartment, iPhone pocket with fleece lining and two zippered stash pockets. These features make it suitable to carry all the essentials you need at work or on the move.

Made with weight-bearing tensile panels and designed to protect, organize, and carry your 15.6” laptop and other essential items, the city compact backpack gives you the opportunity to carry everything you need for your daily commute.

With a plush fleece-lined laptop compartment, a large organizer compartment and an iPhone pocket with fleece lining, this backpack has got you covered in terms of storage space. The shoulder straps are adjustable and they have air mesh padding. The backpack can hold up to a 15” laptop. It's made from polyester material, so you can be assured of the durability of this backpack. It comes with adjustable and padded shoulder straps for carrying comfort.

The only demerit of this backpack is that some people might find the space insufficient. Some similar Incase laptop backpacks not reviewed include the City Dot backpack, City Commuter backpack, and the Compass backpack.

The Incase ICON Lite Triple Black Backpack’s name might be lengthy, but it rolls right off the tongue. More importantly, this thing makes for a simple, solid daypack for your everyday essentials.

We’ve tested several Incase products in the past, like the ICON Backpack . Like it, the ICON Lite Triple Black Backpack features some redeemable characteristics in an EDC bag, like durable materials and a streamlined look.

How has it been holding up during testing? The answer lies in the review below!

Materials & Aesthetic

This pack is essentially a smaller, simpler version of the original ICON Backpack. It has the same subdued, technical look but without all the bulk, which may be why this bag scored 11% higher on its aesthetic according to our Instagram poll at 69% approval.

If you haven’t already guessed from the name, this bag is available in the Triple Black colorway at the time of this review, but that’s it. We appreciate how low-profile this colorway keeps the pack, though, so it’s not drawing any unwanted attention in a crowd. If you were hoping for something more vibrant, we’re sorry to break the bad news. Feel free to keep a lookout just incase more colorways become available in the future.

As for the branding, Incase incorporates their logo in a few places, including the zipper pulls, shoulder straps, and right on the front of the bag. They’re all black-on-black (except for the one on the shoulder strap), so they’re relatively subtle.

This pack’s material reminds us of a lot of what we’ve seen on Aer’s Work Collection. It’s made with an 840D ballistic nylon that’s stiff to the touch and features a weather-resistant coating along the front to help water slide off and away from your stuff. It’s still in great shape after two weeks of testing—we haven’t seen any scratches, scuffs, or tears so far.

Our only note is that this fabric picks up debris easier than others we’ve tested, so a quick look at the bag before you head out might save you from any disapproving looks. We had this issue with the ICON Backpack as well, which features a similar material, so this comes as no surprise.

As we mentioned in the ICON Backpack review, the zippers on this bag are unbranded, which is always a concern for us. That said, most of the zippers on this pack have been gliding open and closed during testing, and we appreciate their easy-to-grab zipper pulls. We have one note with the zipper on the front pocket, but we’ll explain that later in the review.

The hardware, however, is branded. It comes to us from Duraflex, and we’re not mad about it, considering all of our positive experiences with it in the past. The strap adjusters and buckles on the bag have been working properly throughout testing—we don’t have any gripes to share.

External Components

There’s a substantial amount of padding on the bag’s shoulder straps, considering its size and storage. You have all the support you need for the line up you’ll likely be carrying. Not to mention, the smooth mesh lining increases breathability, so you’re not sweating up a storm on a warmer day or on longer wears. We would’ve appreciated some elastic keepers to do away with dangling strap, but you can always add something like the Tom Bihn Strap Keepers to supplement.

As for the sternum strap, it’s elasticated, so it flexes well to your chest and is easy to adjust to wherever it feels the most supportive. You might not feel the need for one since, again, this bag is on the smaller side, but some extra stability never hurt anybody. As we do with the shoulder straps, we wish that it had an elastic keeper to manage excess strap better, so it’s not flopping around as we walk.

The back panel is also well-built, with ample, stiff padding. It also has air channels and a luxurious mesh lining to ventilate your back (something you don’t get with the ICON Backpack). Altogether, the harness system is a little overkill for this smaller daypack, but we’ve appreciated the added comfort (especially when we’ve got it on for lengthier carries).

Thankfully, we haven’t had the same “hover back” issue we experienced with the ICON Backpack, which felt like it was pulling away from our back toward the bottom (more so on our taller team members). The ICON Lite Triple Black Backpack doesn’t feel like we’re carrying around a giant brick either, as it’s not nearly as bulky.

Even the handle at the top of the bag is densely padded, with its own mesh lining to prevent your hands from getting sweaty. It has a fair amount of structure and space between itself and the bag, so it’s easy to grab when we’re moving the pack around or need to grab something out.

There aren’t any water bottle pockets on the outside of this thing, meaning you don’t have a place to store one externally. You have the capacity in the main compartment to hold a larger one if you’re continually carrying it with you; just note that it’s going to be incredibly close to your laptop (possibly too close for comfort).

Inside The Pack

While we’ve found it more comfortable to carry, the ICON Lite Triple Black Backpack lacks the level of compartmentalization that the ICON Backpack possesses. This can be either a positive or negative for you, depending on what’s most important to you in a pack—comfort or organization, and what you’re willing to sacrifice for both.

The first pocket up for grabs is the small pocket at the very top of the bag. Its location makes it an excellent spot for quick-grab items like your wallet, keys, and even your phone—especially since the soft lining inside keeps tech safe from any scratches.

You also have a zippered pocket on the front that extends most of the length of the pack. The zipper is covered by fabric welts that further protect it from moisture and promote a cleaner look in the process. Unfortunately, it also makes this pocket more challenging to open, as it makes the zipper hard to find and can cause it to stick some.

Once you do get it open, you have enough room to store a larger notebook, documents, and flatter items along those lines. We’ve found that the outline of whatever you pack inside this pocket is visible from the outside, so you don’t want to store anything too bulky or overpack, as it makes the bag look lumpy.

We hinted at this above, but unlike the ICON Backpack, the ICON Lite Triple Black only has only one compartment—the main compartment. The bag offers 20L of storage, so you have room for the basics that you’ll use every day, but its organization isn’t anything to write home about.

You have two small liner pockets against the front flap that can fit cables, a mouse, and other tech/general accessories you don’t want floating around. We’ve been keeping a tinier notebook in one and the Matador Pocket Blanket 2.0 in the other, and they’ve been a great size for both.

On the opposite side is a dedicated sleeve that can hold up to a 16″ laptop, though we’ve been slipping a 13″ MacBook Pro inside during testing. Your laptop is sandwiched in by the padding on the sleeve itself as well as the padding from the back panel, so it has a superior level of cushion if and when it gets jostled around on your commute.

Because of this padding and the suspension of the sleeve, we haven’t felt a need to use a protective sleeve of our own. That said, we have been testing with the Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC , if you’d like to incorporate one for peace of mind.

The rest of the compartment is open space that you can fill with your bulkier gear. You could stash a packable jacket for when the wind picks up, an umbrella for sprinkling showers, or a water bottle (since you don’t have a spot for it on the outside. If you have any excess of smaller items and are looking for more compartmentalization, incorporating pouches and packing cubes with go a long way.

This bag is also well-structured and can sit upright all on its own. This structure is super helpful for when we’re working—we can open the compartment and just reach in and out as we need to without completely picking the bag up or finding something to lean it against.

Review: Incase ICON Backpack

There was a time, seemingly very long ago, when all things everyday carry were analog. But that world, in large part, is dead and gone. Now, technology has invaded nearly every part of our lives. Not only that, but we rely on it more than ever to get us through the day. In fact, there are some folks whose careers wouldn’t exist without access to a computer. As such, gear has had to evolve to suit — even when that gear doesn’t qualify as “technology” itself.

In this case, that applies to one of mankind’s oldest tools: bags — more specifically, backpacks. For those who haul a complement of high-tech devices to and from the office and/or workspace on a daily basis — including a folding computer, tablet, power cables, and accessories (like a mouse, stylus, external hard drive, etc.) — a backpack with the proper amount of storage and security is an absolute necessity. And while there are numerous options regarding the best EDC backpacks that can carry all those things decently, the Incase ICON was made specifically with that purpose in mind. We took a deep dive into the ICON tech-focused backpack to find out just how well it performs in that regard within the following hands-on review.

First Impressions

There are two things we first noticed upon handling the Incase ICON for the first time. First, its minimalist styling is clean and pleasing — there isn’t a mess of seemingly extraneous detailing and the whole silhouette seems well-considered and well-thought-out. Second, the backpack has a markedly rigid structure, especially when compared to similarly-outfitted everyday carry bags. In fact, this backpack looks more like travel-focused luggage than a traditional backpack. There is a very specific reason for this — namely its tech-friendly protective padding — but there is a stiffness to the bag that, for some, may be a turn-off. In spite of its rigidity and padding, however, the bag is still quite lightweight, clocking in at roughly 2.5lbs empty — which isn’t the lightest bag by a long shot, but it also isn’t as heavy as it looks.

Materials & Craftsmanship

While the ICON’s most defining characteristic is probably its rigid, minimalist structure, it has plenty more going for it outside of its signature silhouette. For starters, the bag is built from 840D nylon. This is noteworthy for a couple of reasons. For starters, 840D nylon is still durable enough for everyday carry usage and offers up puncture and abrasion resistance. It’s also naturally weatherproof just like its higher-denier ballistic brethren. However, because Incase chose not to utilize trumped-up 1000D or 1080D ballistic nylon, they can offer many of the same — or at least similar — properties at a much lower cost. Yes, technically, 840D nylon isn’t going to be as tough as 1080D Cordura. However, for EDC usage, you’re probably not going to notice a difference.

To pair with the exterior fabric, Incase has equipped the bag with a suite of nylon straps — similar to car seatbelts — and heavy-duty plastic hardware — which is lightweight-yet-tough and suits the purposes of this backpack rather swimmingly. Furthermore, the shoulder straps (which boast a stabilizing sternum strap) have a soft mesh-covered foam and the back panel is similarly-equipped with foam padding. It is worth noting, however, that the padding on the back panel and that of the shoulder straps is different. While Incase is tight-lipped as to what the back panel padding is made from, we did discover that it is denser than the shoulder straps, but is also prone to denting and creasing. In fact, we accidentally dented the foam padding toward the bottom of the bag and now those dents appear to be permanent. The back panel still functions as well as it would, but the dents and creases are somewhat unsightly.

Beyond that, the bag is very well constructed. The stitching is quite good and the seam work is subtle and mostly hidden from the eye. With the exception of the aforementioned back panel padding issue, it’s difficult for us to find fault in the quality and craftsmanship of this EDC backpack. That one frustrating fault, however, may serve as a deterrent to some and should definitely be kept in mind.

Function & Form

The Incase ICON’s sleek and pared-down exterior does nothing to betray its extensive innards. With a capacity of just 17L, it might not sound like much, but it has the organization where you need it — especially for the tech-minded folks out there. Admittedly, the limited capacity may be an issue, especially because the bag seems like it should be larger. But what it does with that capacity is pretty spectacular. The storage in the ICON is spread out across eight externally-accessible zippered pockets — including two that are large and deep and boast their own built-in internal organizational systems.

Apart from the two large compartments, the bag has two side-mounted “wings” that each have their own zippered compartment (including one with a headphone pass-through so you can listen to music on your phone, iPod, or another music player without needing to spring for wireless headphones). There’s also a deep-but-narrow front pocket with two wallet-sized pouches within. And there’s a small, top-accessed, microfiber-lined sunglasses pocket that could double as a quick-access mobile device pouch. Finally, accessed via either side of the back panel, there are two more pockets — one with a wider opening and microfiber liner for your laptop (up to a 16″ MacBook Pro) and another with a nylon liner that’s perhaps better suited to documents or any other thin items you want to keep from prying eyes that don’t need the protection of microfiber.

Now, back to the two larger compartments. The first (closer to the back panel) is the bag’s true main compartment and boasts the most space of all eight zippered pockets. It also has a trio of loose pouches — one that’s deep and large enough for a big tablet, and two others opposite one another that are roughly half the size of the larger one. There’s also a small zippered compartment toward the top for small items you may want to keep more secure (like power cables or computer accessories). The second large compartment has an even more comprehensive organizational system, however, marked by a removable keychain tether, a loose medium-sized pouch, and a built-in organizer with two wallet-sized velcro pockets and five other smaller pouches that vary in size (some as small as a pen sleeve and others that are a bit bigger). If you organize compartmentally, the suite of pockets, pouches, and compartments is sure to please.

Who Is This Backpack For?

As mentioned throughout this article, the Incase ICON was made with technology in mind. And while that might seem like it narrows down who can and should carry this as an EDC backpack, we think it’s a much broader category than it might seem at first glance. Yes, this bag was definitely designed with tech-hauling in mind, but so many of us work at tech-focused jobs nowadays. Whether you’re a writer, accountant, coder, gamer, designer, engineer, etcetera, you’re probably going to need a backpack that can safely carry your computer, tablet, and all the applicable accessories. In that case, this bag was made for you. The only class of person who might not find this to be a suitable EDC backpack might be people that work doing hard manual labor — in which case a backpack might already be out of the question save for transporting your lunch to and from the job site.

With its issues regarding its overall packability and usable capacity, as well as a back panel that’s prone to dents and creases, the Incase ICON is not without its issues. However, its durable and weatherproof nylon exterior, extensive tech-friendly internal organization, protective padding, and a clean minimalist exterior design certainly go a long way toward making up for its shortcomings. Pair that with a very approachable price point when compared to its overall quality and you may find that the Incase ICON is a formidable option for tech-focused EDC enthusiasts.

Review: InCase ICON Slim backpack

Note: This is a review I wrote a couple of years ago when I was buying a new travel backpack. Since I'm in the market again, I thought I'd bring this one over from my old blog with an update before I add reviews of newer bags. This one is still available from InCase under the name ICON Lite. At the end, I've added an update with what I liked or disliked over time.

I do a fair amount of travel by air or rail, and I usually have one of two tech load outs I need to take with me. The normal load out is my MacBook, iPad, iPhone, various cables and chargers, headphones and various travel or event related paperwork. The alternate load out is all of those things plus a DSLR, usually when attending Comic Cons. For the standard load out, I've used a backpack from Mountain Hardwear Tablet.

This was a great, but simple bag that served me well for years. They stopped making that model though, so once it started showing signs of wear, I had to look elsewhere for a replacement.

Enter the ICON Slim from InCase. I did a lot of investigation online and looked around at local brick and mortar shops. I wanted to get something that is visually appealing that doesn't scream "find me a mountain to scale" or "I can live in the woods for a week" or "I'm an athlete!"

InCase makes two versions of the ICON backpack, and it's the full-size big brother to the slim that gets the rave reviews. But I had two problems with the big one: it's a good 2 inches thicker than the Tablet backpack I felt was an ideal size, and it wasn't available in Canada. As I write this, the US exchange rate is the highest it's been in a decade against the Canadian dollar, making anything and everything ordered from the USA 40%+ more expensive. Conveniently, the Apple Store in Canada carries the ICON Slim, and at a better than straight exchange rate price (possibly stock purchased and imported before the dollar really took off).

So I ordered the Slim with some trepidation and waited for it to arrive. Now that it has, it's review time!

Initial impressions:

Hmmm. I don't know if I'll be able to get as much stuff in here as I thought, or had hoped. The thing is the ICON is a very  organized  bag. They've got lots of pockets, in fact there's a pocket for just about everything. And the bag is divided into two main sections: front and back, with an additional slim pocket on the front. The problem with divided storage space is that the dividers themselves take up space that could otherwise be used for stuff. The upside is that when the pack isn't full, stuff doesn't just fall into a messy, potentially damaging jumble at the bottom.

From the outside, the ICON Slim looks to be about the same size as the Tablet backpack, though to keep the nice smooth lines, it has an internal structure of padding so the bag is always expanded to the max.

I have to admit that the ICON Slim is a handsome bag. The ballistic nylon is typical for a backpack but it's flawless and smooth. The stitching appears to be excellent, everything is lined up perfectly. It's a good looking bag that would be equally at home in the Board Room or the coffee shop. It's subtle and doesn't call a lot of attention to itself, nor does it particularly advertise "Apple Store inside, please steal me." My only complaint on the outside is that the straps seem to be a bit short. Sure they're adjustable, but the padded section is shorter than one might expect, not running the full length of the bag. In practice the padding is long enough to cover all contact points with your body, so it works, but feels slightly odd.

Practicality:

I gathered together a sample of my standard load. I added some extra items in there to really give the bag a good test, including a giant D-ring binder I store teaching notes in, and a textbook. When travelling, sometimes you want to bring an additional item or two of clothing so I grabbed a sweater and a pair of shoes.

Amazingly, the ICON swallowed it all with a minimum of fuss. A great deal of thought has gone into the pockets because they seem to all be right where you would want them. I was able to pack everything away but keep things I might need like glasses and headphones, conveniently near the top and easy to access. The front pocket is slim and should hold only papers. There's a top pocket with super-soft lining to stash a phone or anything else delicate. The front compartment opens wise at the top, but it deceptively wide all the way down. There's a lot more space In there than you might expect and pockets line the way. Behind that is the main compartment with another super-soft and padded section for your MacBook as well as an iPad in a sleeve just in front of it. The rest of the compartment is wide open, and it's where I stashed the giant D-ring binder.

Pack it all in you get a nice sleek package that is very well padded to protect all your gear, and still looks like a reasonable backpack and not a tortoise's shell.

The ICON Slim from InCase is a terrific bag. It's got ample storage space, above average padding to protect electronic gear, and well thought out pockets, all while keeping a professional profile that doesn't scream "IT support." It's above average in price as well at $169.95 CAD at the time of this review. It's available in three colours from the Apple Store . I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and it's working out well. The straps are very thickly padded, and short (as mentioned above) and will take a little break-in time to soften them up. But it looks great, carries all my stuff, and protects it at the same time. I definitely recommend it.

Update June 2019:

The ICON Slim was a solid bag that I used for quite a while. It held up amazingly well, looking like new when I stopped using it.This might make you ask: why did you stop using it then? There were a few things that I didn't like about the ICON Slim that made me pass it down to my son and look for something different. It comes down to a matter of use case.

For travel, your best bag is one with a big, open main compartment allowing maximum flexibility when packing. The ICON Slim comes with padded dividers and pockets, making it difficult to pack bulky items, including the free books you pick up at writing conferences. It's also missing a lunge strap to slide over the carry handle of a roller bag.

For every day carry, you appreciate the organization options for things like laptops, papers, cables, etc. because it distributes the load so it doesn't all just collect as a heavy lump at the bottom fo the bag. The ICON Slim did a great job with that. But for your every day carry, you're often carrying less than the maximum capacity of the bag. The semi-rigid padded frame of the ICON Slim means it maintains its shape at all times. One one hand this is good because it always looks good. On the other, it's always at maximum bulk, which makes it unnecessarily difficult to sling around.

Finally, there are no water bottle pouches on the side, something I've come to love in all my other bags, whether I'm using them to hold an umbrella, a camera monopod, or an actual water bottle.

I'd suggest this bag's best use is for every day carry when carry have a consistently large amount of gear. So for a student or commuter, this would be great. It's top-quality construction, and super comfortable to wear. If you're looking for a travel pack, there are other options that will likely be better.

When it comes to bag travel, the Cotopaxi Allpa packs a serious punch. The carry-on backpack is available in three sizes – 42L, 35L and 28L – and a variety of colors, including the vibrant multicolor Del Día style. I especially like that there are two places you can access the front compartment of the bag, and I like that the laptop section is separate from the rest of the backpack so it's easier to take out my computer and go through airport security (which makes me less likely to drop something from inside my bag). – Rachael Hood

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a solid, rugged choice that will last. The nylon canvas shell of the backpack is weatherproof and water-resistant, with a waterproof bottom liner as well. You can unzip the back panel to access the main packing compartment, which is also accessible via zippers along each side of the bag and can be divided in two by a mesh sleeve. To keep you organized, this backpack has quick-access pockets for small items like passports and glasses, plus expandable side pockets for water bottles, tripods or umbrellas.

The bag meets carry-on size requirements but can expand by 1.5 inches if you need the extra room; the shoulder straps and hip belt tuck away if you plan to check it instead. If you prefer a smaller bag, the Peak Design Travel Backpack also comes in a 30-liter size .

If you only want to bring one bag on a short trip, you can't go wrong with this backpack. It's sturdy, reliable and able to fit a ton while still being carry-on-sized. It served me well on a recent trip to New Zealand, and I'd definitely recommend it for travelers who like hands-free luggage. – Catriona Kendall

If you'll be adventuring in the great outdoors for your next trip, consider purchasing the Kelty Redwing 36 backpack. You'll find two exterior water bottle pockets as well as a hydration-friendly inner pocket (for storing a water bladder). Tool loops can hold hiking poles, fishing poles, ice axes or other adventure gear. Organization is made easy with plenty of zippered pockets, including one on each side of the bag, a large one on the front and one on top that's perfect for storing travel documents such as a passport. Plus, a ventilated back panel helps keep you cool when you're hurrying through airports or hiking up a mountain.

If you need a bigger backpack, the Kelty Redwing 50 Tactical is a great checked bag option and has many of the same features as the Redwing 36 along with more straps and pockets.

The Kelty Redwing 36 can be cinched down quite a bit for truly streamlined travel and to better meet carry-on size guidelines. However, I'll caution that the waist belt is difficult to remove. – Leilani Osmundson

If you want the flexibility to either carry or wheel your luggage, a wheeled backpack style may work best for you. The Samsonite Tectonic NuTech Wheeled Backpack transforms from a rolling bag into a backpack by just tucking in the handle, pulling out the stowed straps and using the wheel cover. The durable polyester material is water-repellent and has red accents.

There are three sections to this bag: a main compartment with space to pack for a weekend trip, a dedicated sleeve for both a laptop up to 15.6 inches and a tablet up to 11 inches, and a front pocket equipped with various organizational features. There are various small pockets, pen sleeves, card slots and a key leash within. You can tuck a water bottle and umbrella into the exterior pockets on either side of the bag. Just keep in mind that this bag may slightly exceed carry-on size restrictions on some airlines with stricter rules.

I expected a wheeled backpack to be uncomfortable to carry, but this convertible bag has proved surprisingly convenient. I like having both the rolling and hands-free options for different circumstances, and it has ample packing space. – Catriona Kendall

This sustainable water-resistant backpack is constructed with 100% recycled materials and has 10 pockets to organize everything. The spacious interior compartment has a 17-inch padded laptop sleeve and a tablet sleeve with a strap to secure it in place, as well as an interior mesh pocket for small items or charging cords and a removable shoe bag.

On the exterior, the front pocket has a built-in mesh organizer for pens, and there are mesh water bottle holders on each side of the backpack. The back of the bag has two adjustable padded straps, each with a built-in zippered compartment ideal for keys, ID or tickets. A hidden zip pocket makes for a secure space for a wallet or passport, and the trolley sleeve provides added versatility.

This backpack is great for travel or everyday use. I especially appreciate the comfortable backpack straps with the small zip pockets. They are easy to reach and perfect for small items like lip gloss, cash or a transit card. Durably constructed, the water-resistant exterior performs well in any weather, and I love that there's a padded space for both my laptop and iPad. – Rachael Hood

For an upscale backpack that can be dressed up or down, this Monos style is an ideal choice. Constructed with sustainable vegan leather (there's also a nylon version with vegan leather accents), this structured style is both water- and scratch-resistant. The 15-inch laptop sleeve is separate from the main packing compartment so you can access your device easily. The brand's QuickSnap Modular Kit System means you'll have a detachable Metro Kit for small items that attaches magnetically to the front of the bag; this kit is interchangeable between Metro bags and can be swapped out for a different kit or removed entirely, depending on your needs.

A backpack is our favorite way to carry and protect a laptop and other necessities on a commute. It’s more ergonomic than a tote or messenger bag, it holds more than a briefcase, and it looks more stylish than a rolling bag.

Since 2015, we’ve tested more than 75 backpacks on buses, trains, cars, bikes, and planes. The following five are the best we’ve found: a tailored professional bag , a tough pack that fits a ton of tech , a sleek traveling companion , a stylish and budget-friendly option , and an ergonomic office-to-gym workhorse .

Handsome styling, ergonomic design, and thoughtful details make this pricey backpack worth the money.

Buying Options

If you prefer a more-polished-looking backpack—think modern-briefcase vibes—the Troubadour Apex 3.0 Backpack is a terrific choice. It’s smart enough for the boardroom, yet it still offers all the convenience and comfort of a backpack.

Note: This is a newer and slightly redesigned version of our previous pick, the Troubadour Apex Backpack, which is no longer available. The Apex 3.0 is now made from 90% recycled materials, and it has a comfier, bonded neoprene top handle. It also includes a hidden pocket on the left shoulder strap. After testing the Apex 3.0, we confirmed that, like its predecessor, it is worthy of being a pick.

It’s elegant and beautifully made. The Apex is our most expensive pick, but its style and quality justify its hefty price tag. The backpack’s substantial, recycled polyester body is both durable and refined, and vegan-leather trims add extra polish. It has a tailored, softly geometric shape that remains streamlined when full, and it doesn’t collapse when empty.

The sturdily-crafted Apex keeps your cargo safe in inclement weather. Its body is coated with a fluorocarbon-free waterproofing treatment, and the smoothly operating zippers are set in a waterproof tape for additional protection.

It’s surprisingly ergonomic. Plush, ventilated back panels and contoured memory-foam shoulder straps—unusual in such an elegant, non-technical-looking backpack—make the Apex a pleasure to carry. The padding feels soft and luxurious, even with heavier loads.

The flexible top handle is lined with neoprene on its underside, so the bag is comfortable to carry by hand—a particularly nice feature for commuters on crowded buses or trains. And a luggage pass-through sleeve does a great job of stabilizing the bag on the handle of a rolling suitcase.

When the Apex isn’t very full, however, its substantial structure and padding can make it feel, in the words of one tester, “like a lot of backpack.”

It’s thoughtfully organized, inside and out. The backpack’s main compartment is roomy enough to fit larger items, and it includes an organizer panel with several slip pockets, zip pouches, and pen holders. Sitting closest to your back, the 17-inch laptop compartment is comfortably padded and has an extra sleeve for stashing a tablet. On the bag’s exterior, a deep-but-flat front-zip pocket and two spacious water-bottle pockets offer accessible storage.

An expandable pocket, tucked into the left shoulder strap, is designed for items you’ll want to grab quickly, such as a wallet, phone, or ID badge. In practice, we didn’t find it all that functional; it’s uncomfortable to stash an iPhone right against your shoulder, and when the pocket is expanded, the bag looks less sleek. This pocket is one of the new features that Troubadour added to the Apex for the updated 3.0 model, and though we don’t think it provides much function, you don’t have to use it if you don’t like it, and it’s otherwise harmless.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• This backpack’s structure, padding, and size can make it feel bulky, especially if you’re not carrying much.
• The bag has a zippered pocket on its left strap for stashing go-to items, like a phone, but its placement isn’t very comfortable for carrying a phone (or any other rigid, rectangular object).

Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe

Holds tons of tech, takes tons of abuse.

This tough backpack can accommodate and organize lots of tech—we fit a laptop, keyboard, tablet, and handheld gaming device in it all at once, with room to spare. But its aesthetic may be too utilitarian for some.

When you’re toting a ton of tech, keeping it all organized and safe is probably high on your list of priorities. The Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe capably contains and protects valuable cargo, and it will last you a long time. Plus, it has plenty of ergonomic and comfort features to help lighten your load.

It fits an impressive amount of gear into a slim profile. Although this 20-liter Timbuk2 bag feels compact, it can pack in plenty of tech. In our testing, we used it to carry a 13-inch laptop and its charger, a keyboard , a tablet , two power banks, a Nintendo Switch Lite and its charger, various cables, a cable stable full of accessories, a planner , a notepad , keys, and a travel mug , with room to spare.

When you have less to haul, compression straps at the lower front of the bag allow you to cinch the pack down—a major plus on crowded buses and trains. But some of our testers disliked the look of the prominent metal buckles.

It’s loaded with compartments and pockets. The Authority Deluxe’s front section is a paradise of pockets, with a stretchy mesh zippered pouch, pen holders, and two plush-lined tech compartments. Sitting just behind that section is a roomy main compartment with a nicely padded sleeve. Closest to the back, the well-padded laptop compartment—the largest among all of our picks—can fit computers up to 17 inches. Finally, two exterior front zip pockets fit quick-grab items, and a flexible side pocket snugly accommodates a 24-ounce bottle.

It’s tough. This Timbuk2 backpack’s durable recycled-nylon exterior guards against bumps and bruises, while its ample padding and waterproof boot (the bottom portion of the bag) add extra peace of mind when you’re transporting precious tech. Plus, Timbuk2 backs the Authority Deluxe with a lifetime warranty.

It’s well padded for all-day comfort. Testers found the Authority Deluxe comfortable and easy to carry thanks to the plush, breathable padding on its back panel and shoulder straps. When you’re lugging heavier gear, the adjustable-height sternum strap helps to distribute the load evenly and keep the pack secure.

• The utilitarian aesthetic won’t appeal to everyone.
• Although this Timbuk2 pack is tough and protective overall, it does not have a suspended laptop compartment (like our pick from Aer ).
• It offers only one water-bottle holder (on the right side, when worn), which can make for an uneven distribution of weight.

Sleek voyager.

This backpack is loaded with traveler-friendly features, including a sturdy luggage sleeve and passport pocket. Leather accents and gunmetal hardware elevate its simple silhouette, but the thick material can feel a little warm in hot climates.

Whether you’re racing to the office or to an airport gate, the July Carry All Backpack Series 2 is a trusty travel companion. It looks just as luxe and put-together as a structured tote, yet it offers the comfort and functionality of a backpack—with some especially thoughtful features thrown in to help make getting from A to B a little easier.

It’s a chic take on a classic shape. The Carry All has a simple, structured silhouette made from a sleek nylon-twill material. The bag’s leather-wrapped carry handle and zipper pulls, as well as its gleaming gunmetal hardware, add polish to the otherwise pared-down exterior.

It’s ideal for travel. The Carry All’s freestanding shape and sturdy luggage sleeve make it a great travel accessory—among our picks, this bag and the Troubadour Apex 3.0 fit the most securely on the handle of a rolling suitcase. Its hidden passport pocket, tucked beneath the top carry handle, is a nice extra.

And since globetrotting often comes with surprises, it’s reassuring to know that this bag’s exterior is sturdy, protective, and water resistant—something to which we can personally attest after getting caught in cats-and-dogs rain.

Its pockets are especially useful—delightful, even. The Carry All’s boxy main compartment has a tablet sleeve and a sleek zippered pouch. Against the back of the pack, you’ll find a top-zip laptop compartment for computers up to 16 inches, while a roomy quick-access front pocket provides a place to stash smaller items.

But the feature that tickled us the most is the Carry All’s fully enclosed, zippered water-bottle pocket, located on the left side of the pack (when worn). The clever design—which allows you to tuck your drink away in a secure chamber, out of sight—ensures that a garishly colored bottle will never clash with your tasteful backpack.

It’s perfect for carrying medium loads. With a 20-liter capacity, the Carry All is roomy enough for your essentials—it easily fits a long weekend’s worth of clothing, toiletries, and tech—but it won’t tempt you to overpack.

The adjustable straps are just right for midsize cargo, as they’re better cushioned than those on our pick from Everlane but not as substantial as the straps on our picks from Timbuk2 and Aer , so they hang more naturally over the shoulders when the bag isn’t full.

Our only knock: The Carry All lacks mesh padding at the back, so its substantial nylon material can feel warm against the body in hotter weather.

• This backpack has only one water-bottle holder (on the left side, when worn), which can create an uneven distribution of weight.
• Unlike other travel packs that we looked at, from Away and Italic , this bag doesn’t have air-mesh back panels, so it wears a little hotter.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack

Understated and versatile.

A streamlined design and welcome features—including a magnetic top closure and a plethora of pockets—make this budget-friendly, wear-anywhere bag look and feel pricier than it is. But unlike our other picks, it isn’t backed by a warranty.

Everlane’s The ReNew Transit Backpack is an effortlessly cool, feature-packed bag that excels in both form and function. It’s versatile enough to go from the workplace to a weekend getaway, and it comfortably carries midsize loads.

It has a contemporary, wear-anywhere vibe. The Transit balances its clean aesthetic with a slightly slouchy silhouette, so it looks equally at home in the office and on the go. The recycled-polyester exterior comes in an array of subtle colors.

It’s functional and feature-packed. The Transit’s main compartment is equipped with two slip pockets for notebooks or a tablet, as well as an interior water-bottle pocket. A zipper that runs along the side of the bag opens to a separate, padded laptop compartment that can accommodate computers up to 15 inches, though the side-access placement can take some getting used to.

The spacious zippered front compartment makes it easy for you to access your commuter essentials, and the external side water-bottle pocket smoothly accommodates a 24-ounce water bottle. The backpack’s fold-over top has another roomy zippered pocket and is secured with an invisible magnetic closure—a favorite feature for all of our testers, and a plus if you have reduced manual dexterity.

It’s best suited for medium-size loads. Weighing just 1.42 pounds when empty, the Transit is the lightest of our picks. Its straps are gently contoured, and while you’re on the go, you can easily make length adjustments to get the perfect fit.

Although the Transit has a spacious, 27-liter capacity, we don’t recommend filling it to the brim with your heaviest gear; its lightly padded straps make it best for more modest cargo. We were perfectly comfortable toting a laptop, water bottle, notebook, and sweater in it.

It’s a great value. The Transit is one of the most budget-friendly of our picks, but it has an upscale look—the reveal of its sub-$100 price tag prompted several “Wait, what?!” reactions from testers, friends, and colleagues.

Although the Transit is not as tough as our picks from Timbuk2 and Aer or as luxe as the Troubadour Apex 3.0 and July Carry All bags, its sturdy, water-resistant exterior and all-metal hardware hold up capably over time. One tester, who has been using the Transit regularly for a year and counting, reports that her bag isn’t showing a single sign of wear.

• The side-zip laptop compartment requires you to insert and remove your computer at an angle, rather than sliding it smoothly in and out; all of our other picks, in contrast, have easier-to-access top-zip laptop compartments. And its placement (on the right of the pack, when worn) is awkward if you’re left-handed.
• One tester noted that when the bag is especially full, the magnetic closure for the fold-over top comes undone.
• This is the only backpack we recommend that isn’t backed by a warranty.
• Due to this bag’s popularity, we’ve seen frequent stock issues.

Aer Duffel Pack 3

For fitness buffs.

This futuristic-looking backpack seamlessly transitions from office to gym, with ultra-comfortable straps and plenty of organization for your gadgets and gear—plus a ventilated shoe compartment. It’s over 20 inches tall, so it fits best on people with a bigger back.

Fitness-minded folks who hit the gym before or after work—and who don’t mind carrying a longer bag—will appreciate the stylish, protective, and extremely ergonomic Aer Duffel Pack 3 .

It’s the comfiest of our picks for carrying heavy loads. Among all the laptop backpacks we tested, the Duffel Pack 3 was the best at comfortably distributing weight. At 2.9 pounds, it’s also the heaviest bag we recommend—but thanks to its ergonomic design, those extra ounces aren’t noticeable.

The back panel and contoured shoulder straps are cushioned with plush, breathable mesh padding. A secure, easily adjustable sternum strap clicks across the chest to position the bag correctly—a feature that comes highly recommended by physical therapist Sarah Lloyd and is especially helpful when the bag is heavy.

It keeps gym gear separate. Cleverly designed compartments divide sweaty clothes and shoes from the rest of your stuff. True to its name, the Duffel Pack 3’s spacious, well-designed main area opens wide to allow top-to-bottom access to your duds; its interior lining is treated with an antimicrobial coating to control odors. A ventilated shoe compartment, which unzips at the base of the backpack, keeps stinky trainers away from your other gear.

It’s just as well suited for work as it is for the gym. The Duffel Pack 3 is no one-trick pony. You can stow your computer and other gadgets in its amply padded back compartment, which includes numerous slip pockets as well as a stretchy mesh zippered pouch, perfect for storing a laptop charger.

For convenient access to belongings while you’re on the go, this Aer pack has two zippered pockets on the front that blend into its pleated exterior. You’ll also find an easily reachable pocket at the top of the bag for your phone—lined with a plush material—as well as two elasticized side water-bottle pockets.

It’s the most protective of our picks. The 16-inch laptop compartment is substantially padded and has a plush lining that won’t scratch delicate surfaces. It also features a “false bottom” to keep your computer suspended safely above the base of the bag, protecting it from bumps and drops. And during our tests, the pack’s water-resistant Cordura material (a tightly woven nylon performance fabric) and sealed waterproof zippers kept gear dry in the rain.

Everything about the Duffel Pack 3 feels high quality, including its ballistic-nylon exterior, YKK-brand zippers, and Duraflex plastic hardware. Plus, Aer backs its products with a lifetime warranty.

• The substantially padded shoulder straps and back panel can feel bulky when you aren’t carrying much in the pack.
• At 20.5 inches long, the Duffel Pack 3 may overwhelm smaller frames. If you’re under 5-foot-10 or so, you may prefer the nearly identical but sized-down Aer Fit Pack 3 , which is 17.5 inches long and has a 18.7-liter capacity.
• While this bag is long and heavy, its 21.4-liter capacity is actually not as generous as that of some of our other picks, though its clever layout does make good use of the space. Much of its bulk comes from all the extra padding.

If you’re looking for a stylish, smaller-scale pack for organizing tech: The Aer Day Pack 2 has tons of pockets and organization for corralling your gadgets, including a padded, suspended 16-inch laptop sleeve. It has ultra-comfortable padded straps and a breathable mesh back panel—but with a capacity of 15 liters, it’s best for those who travel light. Its exterior has a sleeker look than the Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe , our other ultra-techie pick. Note: This style has been replaced by an updated version, the Aer Day Pack 3 , which we have not yet tested. At the time of publishing, the Day Pack 2 is still being sold while inventory lasts.

If you commute mostly by bike and need a bag that can withstand the elements: The Chrome Industries Urban Ex 2.0—which comes in 20-liter and 30-liter versions—is tough, durable and comfortable. Its rugged, waterproof exterior has handy loops for hooking a helmet or U-lock, and the roll-top closure lets you shrink and expand the bag as needed. The back panel and shoulder straps are well padded, and an adjustable chest buckle keeps the pack securely in place as you whip around turns. Note: This style has been replaced by an updated version, the Urban Ex Backpack ( 20L and 30L ), which we have not tested. At the time of publishing, the Urban Ex 2.0 is still being sold on some sites while inventory lasts.

If you want a chic, affordable backpack with a silky sheen: The Lululemon New Crew Backpack 22L Logo is a sporty, stylish pack with an upscale look—making its under-$100 price tag all the more welcome (and surprising). Its water-repellent nylon fabric is lustrous and fluid, and it comes in a selection of clean, monochromatic neutrals with color-matched zippers, straps, and branding. We hoped that the New Crew would fill the hole left behind by the Lululemon Everyday Backpack 2.0, a previous (and much beloved) pick in this guide, which was discontinued in January 2024. In many ways, the New Crew fits the bill. It has a similar aesthetic and a 22-liter capacity, with lightly padded straps for comfortably toting light-to-medium loads. A dedicated laptop compartment holds a computer up to 15 inches, and a spacious main compartment ably contains bulkier items. On the exterior, there are two water bottle pockets and a shallow front pocket, which opens via an attached carabiner with a long loop. But the New Crew falls short in some ways that were tough to overlook. Its three interior slip pockets feel flimsy, and lack closures or elastic to keep belongings secure. And the plastic carabiner on the exterior pocket can come off if you pull too hard; should it become detached (or lost), the zipper is difficult to operate without it.

To find great backpacks for anyone who commutes with a laptop, we considered the following criteria:

• Comfort and fit: Our picks allow adjustments so that they sit correctly—high and close to the back—on a variety of bodies and are comfortable to wear for an entire commute. Some also have comfort-enhancing features such as contoured straps, breathable mesh padding, and sternum straps, which clip across your chest to stabilize the bag. We also consulted with physical therapist Sarah Lloyd, director of clinical education at Spear Physical Therapy , for expert guidance on how to wear a backpack ergonomically .
• Laptop protection: We wanted packs with a well-padded compartment for storing at least a 15-inch laptop. They should also keep tech dry in inclement weather.
• Organization: In addition to a main compartment, a good commuter backpack should have an easily accessible front pocket and a place to securely stash a water bottle. Many of our picks offer quite a bit more, including thoughtfully designed features for containing tech, travel documents, gym gear, and other necessities.
• Quality and durability: We examined each bag’s construction, from the stitching to the fabrics to the padding. We tested zippers, snaps, buckles, and sliders for their durability and ease of use. Most of the backpacks we recommend are also covered by warranties.
• Aesthetics: We considered bags in a variety of styles, from polished packs that could give even the sleekest totes a run for their money to rugged bags for taming tech and sweaty gym gear. All of our picks are attractive and office-appropriate.
• Price: We focused on bags that cost less than $300, and we found plenty of great options for far less.

We then put the laptop backpacks that satisfied our initial criteria to the test in the field. My Wirecutter colleagues and I have worn dozens of backpacks for commutes by train, bus, bike, and car. We’ve also schlepped through airports with them and taken them for long walks in all sorts of weather.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we’ve tested for previous iterations of this guide, just what’s still available.

The inexpensive Amazon Basics Laptop Backpack has good reviews, but we think it’s alarmingly ugly. It was out of stock at the time of our testing, too.

We had difficulty accessing the contents of the very expensive Sandqvist Alva .

We found the straps on the travel-ready Away Front Pocket Backpack stiff and uncomfortable.

Testers liked the Bellroy Classic Backpack but not as much as they did any of our picks. The Bellroy Classic Backpack Plus was uncomfortable.

The Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack has a fun, pop-art-meets-streetwear vibe, but it’s heavy and expensive, and in our tests it felt stiflingly hot against our backs.

We used to recommend the Fjällräven Räven 28 for travel, but unlike our current travel pick, the July Carry All , it lacks a luggage pass-through.

Testers enjoyed the cute Herschel Nova Backpack Mid-Volume but said it wasn’t grown-up enough for the office. The weather-resistant Herschel Survey II Backpack hung too low on our 5-foot-6 tester—even with the straps fully tightened—and its front pocket is frustratingly hidden beneath the top flap.

The large, office-to-gym Lo & Sons Hakuba was heavy and hot to wear.

The Lululemon City Adventurer Backpack 20L is too small to be a functional work-to-gym bag. And we couldn’t even fit a full workday’s worth of stuff into the 10-liter Osprey Arcane Small Day .

The Matein Travel Laptop Backpack felt cheaply made.

For a commuter bag, the Patagonia Black Hole Pack 25L was too bulky and disorganized.

The Public Rec Pro Pack Plus is a travel backpack that looks sophisticated, but we found it uncomfortable. We’ve seen availability issues with this pack, too, though it should be restocked.

The stylish, waterproof Rains Backpack Mini doesn’t fit much (9 liters), and it’s uncomfortable for carrying a laptop—the thin straps are poorly padded and hard to adjust.

Though the State Kane Double Pocket Large is spacious and well organized, the material wears hot, and the straps are a bit stiff and under-padded.

The Topo Rover Pack is well made and comfortable. But its tall, narrow shape restricts its capacity, and its campground aesthetic can feel a little juvenile for the workplace.

Here’s My Review Away’s The Backpack is bigger than you’d guess from the exterior. I wish it were just a hair better organized inside, however, because it’s missing some key slots for pens and business cards. Still, I can overlook some of those shortcomings while “flying” (that is, sitting in my wicker chair in cramped quarters of our coach cabin mock-up). I was able to remove the Away from the underseat space, prop it on my knees, and access my over-ear headphones, Moleskine notebook, hand sanitizer, snacks, lip balm, etc., all without fear of spilling the contents. Why? It has a perfectly flat bottom. This is HUGE! A lot of packs I tried out wanted to topple over or were happier on their sides, which is no good if you want to just poke inside for one item, particularly while in transit. Also, yes, it’s made from nylon, but it’s smooth, and for that reason—if you’re wearing a short-sleeve T-shirt—doesn’t rub abrasively like the stuff used for some of the brawnier packs I evaluated.

Bummer then that although it could just consume everything I had to carry, and squeeze into the underseat space with minimal toe overlap, the Away didn’t handle my 17.5 pounds of stuff with particular grace. There’s no sternum strap, and I either had to elongate the backpack straps to let the load hang lower and press on my sacrum or cinch the too-narrow straps very tightly and feel the force of the weight in my lumbar. Once I removed a few pounds, the pack felt a lot easier to carry, so probably the solution is to just bring less.

Bonus! There’s a cut-through to lower the Away onto the handles of roll-aboard bags, and just behind that there’s a concealed zippered compartment to stash something very important, like a passport.

One backpack transforms into a daypack and duffel bag!

Any regular reader of Loophole Travel knows that we LOVE to pack efficiently for our trips.  A huge part of packing well is selecting the best bag for the trip.  I recently tested out the HYLETE Icon 6-in-1 backpack on a two-week work assignment, and it was fantastic!  This backpack is like nothing I’ve seen before.  It has the unique ability to morph into six different forms, based on what you need.  Whether you need a spacious carry-on backpack, a lightweight daypack, or a duffel to carry to the gym, the HYLETE Icon 6-in-1 backpack has you covered!

This backpack is extremely well-designed.  As soon as I stumbled across its product page , I knew that I had to check it out.  I reached out to HYLETE, and they graciously sent me a pack to test during my travels, in exchange for an honest review.

In this article, I will break down the six forms of the HYLETE Icon 6-in-1 backpack and demonstrate how each one has unique advantages.  I will also discuss some of my favorite features of the pack, and a couple things that I would change.  The pack is offered in 40L and 60L sizes.  For this article, I will be discussing the 40L option.

Form 1 – Backpack (25L)

The primary form of this bag is a spacious 25L backpack.  In my opinion, 25-35L is an ideal size for carry on travel.  It limits over-packing by forcing me to be efficient with my choices.  If you need more space, grab the larger size, which features a 40L main pack.

The backpack features a spacious main compartment with a fold-back flap, allowing you easy access to all of your stuff at once.  The two side pockets are insulated, so you can keep a water bottle chilled.  I opted to use one side pocket for my toiletry bag, and the other for my electronic chargers/cables.  The inside flap of the main compartment has some mesh organizers as well.

Along the front and top of the pack, you will find three additional storage spaces.  The very top pocket and the front pocket are fleece lined to protect items like tablets or sunglasses.   The pocket on the top/front contains extra organizational options for items you want quick access to during your travel, like a phone, passport, or wallet.

The large zipper along the back reveals a fleece-lined laptop sleeve and extra space for other electronics or books.  The backpack straps have ventilated padding, a sternum strap, and a loop to hold your sunglasses.

Form 2 – Extended Backpack (40L)

Most of the time, during a trip, my gear will not stay as well-packed as it was originally.  I also will accrue a bit of dirty laundry that I want to keep separate from the clean clothes.  This is where the extended backpack compartment really comes in handy.

At the base of the pack, you can unzip and extend an extra 15L section.  This compartment is separate from the main part of the pack, making it a perfect place to store dirty laundry.  It can also provide space if you pick up souvenirs along the way.  Even with the extended section full, the pack still fits within most carry-on size limitations.

Form 3 – Small Duffel

For the next transformation, you can tuck the backpack straps into a compartment behind the back panel, sealing them with a zipper.  Attach the included duffel strap to the hooks on either end and viola, you have a small duffel bag.

This duffel was particularly useful as a gym bag.  I like to find a local gym with some free weights during my work trips.  I tossed a change of clothes and a towel into the small duffel and headed to the gym.  The insulated side pockets kept my water bottle cold as well.

Form 4 – Large Duffel

Similar to the large backpack, you can fold out the 15L extender and clip your duffel strap to the hook at the end of this section.  This larger duffel would be useful for sporting events that require more gear.  I used it to keep my sweaty gym clothes separate after a workout.

Form 5 – Daypack (10L)

Honestly, this was a huge selling point for me.  When I saw that I could zip off a removable daypack, I was totally sold!  This is an absolutely brilliant innovation.

The large zipper running along the back of the pack can be completely unzipped to separate a 10L daypack from the main backpack.  The daypack utilizes the same padded straps and keeps the laptop sleeve, electronics sleeves, and a couple organization pockets intact.

When we explore new cities/beaches/jungles, we will use a day pack for bathing suits, towels, camera gear, change of clothes, rain jackets, snacks, etc.  Daypacks are essential to our travels.  Usually, we will toss a packable daypack into our bag.  The design of this backpack allows us to save the space previously taken up by an extra pack.

Form 6 – Messenger Bag

Fold the backpack straps into the back panel, and attach the duffel strap to the daypack, and you have a slim messenger bag.  While this may not be the most “professional” looking messenger bag, it serves its purpose very well.  I could bring my laptop, charger, notepad, and a few pens for my work assignment.  The bag is slim enough not to be bulky, but large enough (10L) to carry my essentials.

What I Loved

Intelligent Design   – I absolutely love well-designed products.  Innovation and attention to detail set this pack apart from the rest.  The design team really knocked it out of the park!

Versatility   – With six different forms, this pack is easily the most versatile bag I’ve ever used.  I particularly loved the ability to separate the daypack and the duffel and use both at the same time.

Compartment Access – The main compartment opens wide, so I could reach anything I needed.  No need to dig through the bag from the top, like most backpacks.

Sits Up on its Own – This may not seem like a big deal, but I’ve been so frustrated by backpacks that fall over as soon as I set them down.  This pack has a wide enough base to remain upright.

Expandable Compartment   – I originally thought I wouldn’t use this much, but the ability to easily separate clean and dirty clothes between washes is really nice.

What I Would Change

Waist Strap   – When completely full, this pack can get pretty heavy.  It would be nice to have an optional waist strap to transfer the load to my hips.

Top Pocket – The pocket at the very top of the pack hangs into the main compartment.  When the pack is full, it becomes difficult to put anything into that pocket.

Branding on the Daypack/Messenger Bag – I understand the desire to brand items as cool as this, but putting the name in bright white letters across the daypack/messenger bag looks a little cheesy.  The black matte lettering/logo from other parts of the pack would have been a better option here.

Daypack Zippers – The ability to zip off the daypack is awesome.  However, re-attaching it can be just a bit frustrating.  The zippers take some effort to seat correctly.  Minor complaint.

Final Thoughts

I really like what I’ve seen so far from my HYLETE Icon 6-in-1 backpack.  It is an ideal bag for work travel, given its many forms and functions.  I packed everything I needed for the trip in the 25L backpack.  Once at the hotel, I unpacked and separated the duffel and daypack.  The duffel served as my gym bag, complete with insulated pockets for cold drinks and a separate space for sweaty clothing.  The daypack and messenger bag served as my work bag to carry my computer and essentials to the job assignment.  At the end of the trip, I simply zipped everything back together, pulled out the 15L extension and stuffed my dirty laundry in there for the return trip.

• Polyester – Polyester has a fine thread that gives it a lower strength-to-weight ratio making it comfortable all day. And Polyester is more abrasion resistant than nylon making it durable for the long haul.
• Nylon – Easy to clean, and stain-resistant, Nylon fabric is softer and stretchier than Polyester making it great for bags that you want to pack full of your gear!
• Polyurethane Blends – This blend of materials is built to be stretchy, and resistant to oil, grease, and abrasion! This makes it great in a durable backpack for the next adventure.

Water Resistance and Durability

In addition to the basic exterior fabrics, Oakley uses a variety of materials to create packs with multiple uses. Metal handles, MOLLE webbing, Velcro straps and pockets, heavy-duty zippers, interior padding, and more give their backpacks customizable versatility. 

Plus Oakleys adds a water-resistant coating to their waterproof and water-resistant fabrics. They also use Cordura® fabrication on some of their backpacks for extra durability. This synthetic fabric offers extra protection against abrasion as well.

Man accused of hammer attack in Plano also accused of assaults in Dallas, affidavit shows

A Dallas man arrested earlier this month is facing multiple charges in connection with a string of unprovoked assaults in at least two North Texas cities, arrest-warrant affidavits show.

Charles Murray, 26, is accused of multiple attacks spanning back to March 28, according to affidavits obtained by The Dallas Morning News. He allegedly wore a pink hoodie in multiple incidents, at least three of which occurred at DART stations in Dallas, according to records. He is facing multiple charges — one in Collin County and three in Dallas County — including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated robbery, Collin County online records showed. His total bail is $380,000.

About 8 a.m. March 28, DART police officers responded to a reported assault at Inwood Station, in the 2700 block of Inwood Road, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit . A 55-year-old woman said she was on her phone when an “unknown man approached her” and struck her “without warning.”

Investigators reviewed security camera footage that showed the assailant wearing a “pink hoodie” and attacking the woman with a “large item that appeared to be a brick” before walking away and getting on a train, the affidavit stated.

Shortly after 10 a.m. April 8, DART officers were dispatched to the Westmoreland Station, 2600 block of Westmoreland Road, after someone reported that a 50-year-old woman had been assaulted. The assailant was described as a man wearing a pink hoodie, tan pants and a black backpack.

A witness told investigators they saw a man strike the woman with a “glass vase,” an affidavit said. The woman who was attacked told police the man “hit her in the back of the head with a rock three times” before striking her with the vase. He also took her phone before running away.

Just after 3:30 p.m. the following day, Dallas Area Rapid Transit officers were called to the St. Paul Station in the 1900 block of Bryan Street, where someone reported that a man “covered in blood” wanted to talk to authorities, according to court documents. The injured manreported that someone struck him “repeatedly with a hammer.” Their suspect description — a man with a pink hoodie and a black backpack — matched that of the earlier attack, the affidavit showed.

Investigators later reviewed security camera footage of the incident, which matched the man’s account, police said in the affidavit.

About 7 p.m. the same day, Plano police were notified that someone was hit with a hammer at a convenience store in the 600 block of Coit Road, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5). Murray is also accused in that crime, the news outlet reported .

On April 10, Plano investigators matched a photo of the suspect to a “person of interest” in an assault case at a gas station in the city and notified DART police, according to court documents.

One of Murray’s family members reported that he had told them that “he had hurt multiple people and didn’t know why,” the affidavit stated. His address in the affidavits is listed as 1818 Corsicana St., the location of the Bridge homeless shelter downtown.

Murray was arrested April 11 in Dallas, according to Plano police.

It was unclear whether Murray had an attorney.

How much are New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival tickets?

Original single-day tickets range in price from $85 (for the "Early Bird Ticket," which was available until February 19) to $225 (for the "Rolling Stones & More" single-day ticket on May 2). Original multi-day packages start from $240 (for a 3-day package on the second week that excludes May 2 performances).
