Cultural Tours to Ladakh

Ladakh is one of the ancient Himalayan culturally rich regions in the Indian Himalayas. Its affinity to Tibet has given it an identity of Little Tibet. After invasion of Tibet by China, Ladakh is one of the well-known places in Himalaya where in ancient Buddhist cultural heritage of the region in those days are still thriving till date. Ladakh being a land-locked region naturally have been and distant and difficult target for cultural sabotaging factors and hence managed to escape many such influences due to topographic plus points. That is why it is describe some of the earlier writers on Ladakh:

“Only the Best of the Friends and Worst of Enemies can make it to Ladakh”

“You can get frostbite and sun-stroke at the same time if your feet are in the shade and head in the sun”

Culture is an every changing tangible part of an identity of the people of a particular region. Tangible form of such culture changes with the passage of time in its physical forms, but the deep values of such rich cultural heritage (which are intangible) do not change much and manifest itself through the lifestyle of the people of the region for hundreds and hundreds of years. Ladakh is still a culturally very rich society. Ancient trading route – the famous Silk Route passed through Ladakh. Ladakh’s cultural heritage is composition of thousands of years of trade and cultural exchanges on this Silk Route. Because of years of such trade and cultural exchanges in the past, Ladakh’s Culture represent much of the Central Asian culture and hence a very rich and ancient culture.

Some reference as to how Ladakh was and how it is now, one should read these books on Ladakh by these great explorers, scholars, artist and adventurers of those days.

Leh Ladakh Cultural Tour for Couple or Group

Ladakh is a rich cultural state so, we have made this custom in-house Leh Ladakh cultural tour itinerary for those who want to experience a subtle touch to its Culture And Heritage.

As you will soon realise after reaching Leh, one of the most popular activities for visitors to Ladakh is touring some of the amazing Buddhist monasteries that Ladakh is blessed with. Even for those less interested in the interiors of monasteries with all their religious icons and shrines, many of the gompas are simply beautiful structures, worth admiring in themselves.

Usually, Monasteries are built-in dramatic locations on the top of hills or ridges with some even constructed in or around caves, situated high up on a cliff-face. Being usually surrounded by lots of prayer-wheels, even just a walk around the boundaries of village gompa can be a very rewarding experience, allowing time for a moment’s reflection, as well as soaking up the Cultural Atmosphere of life in the villages, that just goes to say that no Leh Ladakh cultural tour is complete without these beautiful gompas (monastery).

In summer, villages are alive with activity. Everyone is busy working on the fields and the animals. Splashing streams boosted by summer snow-melt and lined with shady willow trees, glitter amongst the fields green with swaying barley. Beautiful houses with gardens of extravagant flowers nestle amongst the trees and fields, full of birdsong and the cries of the villagers as they work their fields.

What is included in the tour

  • Inner line permit for all the mentioned places in the itinerary.
  • Airport pickup and drop
  • Vehicle will be Toyota Innova or Manindra Xylo, if the group exceeds more then 6 Pax, then we will provide Force Traveller.
  • Accommodation will be on double sharing basis in the mentioned hotel or similar.
  • Breakfast and Lunch
  • An oxygen cylinder in the car throughout the tour.
  • All the sightseeing and excursion as per the itinerary.

What is NOT included in the tour

  • A/c in the car is charged separately if asked @  ₹5 / km.

Day 1- Arrival in Leh | acclimatise for the new weather | visit LAMO.

  • Our representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. You have to acclimatise for the day in order to better experience the days to come.
  • In the evening you will visit L.A.M.O ( Ladakh art and media organisation) at the hill of Kharyok (a place near the Leh Palace). This place houses gallery, library and open-air performance site where lectures, film screenings, research and documentation projects, workshops and exhibitions about Ladakh’s material and visual culture, performing arts and literature are held regularly.
  • Also visit Leh Palace if time allows for it.

Day 2- Leh to Lamayuru Village (120 km)

  • After breakfast Leave for Lamayuru, visit Hall of fame, Pather Saheb Gurdwara and Sangam on the way.
  • Shortly after crossing the bridge at Khaltse the road splits, Both roads lead to Lamayuru. Yungdrung Gompa, as Lamayuru  Gompa is more properly known, is thought to have its origins in the pre-Buddhist era, as a holy site of the Bon religion. It is also considered to be the oldest monastic site in Ladakh. It offers views down on the ‘moonscape’ refers to what some geologists believe was once a lake-bed in the steep, enclosed valley.
  • In the evening expect a dinner invitation from one of the local, as they are good at telling about the culture and whereabout.
  • Enjoy the local cuisine and head for bed.

Day 3- Back to Leh | Enroute Alchi and Likir

  • Today you will leave for Leh, visit Alchi monastery on the way.
  • Alchi is one of the few remaining places that have a huge significance in any Ladakh cultural tours, it well preserved Buddhist art from the early Indian Buddhist period, partly due to the damage inflicted on many other important sites during their takeover, in later times, by Muslims.
  • Alchi was abandoned as a place of active worship, it was later taken charge of by Likir Gompa. To which we are heading next.
  • Likir Gompa is situated farther up this side valley beyond the village. On the way to the gompa, you pass several Chortens (statues). This is a good spot to take a photo. From here you can just make out a giant gold-coloured statue situated behind the gompa that, as usual, crowns a hill.
  • Head back to Leh and let go of your tiredness.

Day 4- Leh to Changthang | Merak village (180 km)

  • Well, today is for a treat because not many people go to these places in Changthang (northern plain of Ladakh), this is where the Pashmina comes from in Leh and exports to other states in India. Well, the culture of the place is such that they have a small grin on their face. And the redness of the cheek is because of the typography of the land, they are welcoming and good for hosting a guest.
  • This is a long journey so it is recommended to leave early in the morning, visit Shey Palace on the way.
  • Shey situated 15km southeast of Leh, is one of the ancient capitals of Ladakh and has a great cultural significance to Ladakh, as it was the first capital of Ladakh. Opposite the palace is a large man-made pond, which houses lots of fish and ducks, thought to have been created when the palace was built. This is a good spot for some Photography.
  • Next, you will run into Chang-la pass, highest road of the journey. This place is worth stopping for and taking pictures.
  • You will descend into a beautiful valley of Changthang, after sometimes through a gap in a ridge, Pangong lake appears, and there she is in all her glory. On a good day, the waters of the lake reflect the incredible blues of the skies of Ladakh. And the lake continues down all the way to Spangmik as far as the villages of Maan and Merak.
  • Merak has a small gompa and is worth taking a walk. The view of the Pangong lake and surrounding is amazing from here.
  • Stay in a homestay for the night and try a local cuisine of your choice.

Day 5- Merak to Chuchul village | Border of Indo-China (30 km)

  • Start your day with a healthy breakfast and head towards Chuchul village. This place in this Leh Ladakh cultural tour is tailor-made for the itinerary because of its Location. Just a few kilometres away then there is the border for India and China.
  • A lot has happened on this ground from the 1962 war, on ground and Rizang-La. There is a memorial of that war and most of the people are employed by the army as porter, helper and for road construction works.
  • Chuchul is the biggest village among all the other villages in Changthang region. There is a lot to look for in its culture and you have to take a walk in the village and the gompa to find some.
  • Later that evening you can choose to stay at Chuchul or go back to Merak village.

Day 6- Chuchul to Tsomoriri and Korzok village (180 km)

  • Today is an exciting journey covering lots of barren lands and seeing Kyangs ( Himalayan wild ass) on the way to tsomoriri Lake. You will come across Taklang-La pass and descend into the unknown picturesque valley.
  • This is a great route offering lots of variety. Along the way, you will most likely come across Chang-pa (people of northern plain) nomads and may also spot some interesting wildlife.
  • Tsomoriri lake is visually bigger than Pangong Tso, the lake is an important breeding ground for migratory bird species, including rare and endangered species such as the black-necked crane, as well as: brahminy ducks, Great-crested grebes, bar-headed geese and brown-headed gulls. Tsomoriri hosts a far greater number of birds than does Pangong Tso.
  • Korzok village is the benefactor of fewer tourist for Tsomoriri and it is the highest village in India with around 60 families and 70 monks. Korzok celebrates its festival ( Korzok gustor) every year in the monastery, which attracts a lots of people for the display of its cultural dance by the monk wearing huge masks.
  • In the evening stay in a guest house or homestay in Korzok.

Day 7- Local Sightseeing

  • Today is for some serious local business, walk around the village, visit the Gompa or talk to a local about the place.

Day 8- Tsomoriri to Leh | Tsokar (white lake) | Taklang-la (220 km)

  • If you wish to visit Tsokar salt lake on the way back from Tsomoriri – a route that after Tsokar joins up with the main Manali to Leh road below Taklang-la pass – you must allow more time. As the road to Tsokar is unmade, driving is slow. Also, you will want to spend some time at Tso Kar itself before returning to Leh.
  • From here the landscape is just a visual feast up until Taklang-la. (second highest motorable road)
  • After descending from the pass you will come across few prominent villages of Ladakh like ‘Gya’ Meru, Runtse, Upshi and Kharu all alongside the main highway.
  • Visit Thiksay Gompa on the way back. Thiksay gompa is one of the most impressive and probably also the largest gompa in Ladakh. Even before you arrive in Thiksey, you cannot fail to see Thikse Gompa perched high on a ridge overlooking the Indus valley. Thiksay is one of several gompas established in Ladakh during the period of reformation of Tibetan Buddhism in the 15th century by the Tibetan lama, Tsong Khapa. The Rimpoche of thikse is considered to be a re-incarnation of Tsong Khapa.
  • Thiksa is perhaps most famous with visitors for the beautiful giant statue of Maitreya Buddha it houses.
  • Later check into the hotel and restoff.

Day 9- Leh local

  • Today is at your disposal. Whether you want to visit a nearby village or monastery, or perhaps you can visit local market for some souvenir.

Cultural Tours in Ladakh

Thiksay Monastery Ladakh

The possibilities are endless. Ladakh has numerous centuries old monasteries, palaces, and forts located in very scenic surroundings that are easily accessible by vehicles. Most of the monasteries are very well preserved and operating today as centers of the Buddhist faith, much as they have done over the centuries. The monks, who are trained at the monasteries from an early age, are a very important aspect of Ladakhi life. The friendly Ladakhi people have survived in this stark, high altitude environment by relying on their faith, their neighbors, and their highly adapted skills to sustain themselves and prosper. Many families and individuals are willing to share their lives with interested tourists. Here is a partial list of activities that can be included in a cultural tour.

Dancers

  • Visit Monasteries
  • Tour Palaces and Old forts
  • Homestays with local families
  • Visit a nomad camp
  • Teachings by a Lama
  • Visit an oracle
  • Learn Thanka painting
  • Tibetan herbal medicine excursions
  • Attend a monastic festival
  • Ladakhi song and dance presentations
  • Visit a Tibetan Refugee Center
  • Visit local schools

Folk Dancers

Some of these activities are already included with our standard trek packages, but if not, they can be added on.

You can also have a look at the schedule of the Ladakhi festivals here .

14 Days Ladakh Cultural Tour by Delighted Journey

15 Days Tour Ladakh

Ladakh Cultural Tour by Delighted Journey: In northwest India lies the federal state of Ladakh, which is made up of three very different parts: Zanskar, Kargil, and on the other side of the Himalayas the distant Tibetan Plateau known as Ladakh.

LADAKH, derived from la-dwags which means “the Land of Passes”, is enclosed in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas and Karakorum. The territory is a miniature version of Tibet. Ladakh, a mecca of Buddhist spirituality and the last refuge of Tibetan monastic culture, is aptly named Little Tibet.

Everywhere in the valleys, villages and houses, at the bend of a path or at the top of a pass, the presence of the religious is visible, in the form of an engraved stone, a chörten (a kind of stupa) or prayer flags.

In a lunar setting, dominated by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, discover the numerous and splendid gompas (monasteries), and its hospitable people, all along the Indus Valley, in sites that will take your breath away and the exceptional nature of the Nubra valley.

8th DAY: LEH – LIKIR – ALCHI (50 km)

Today we are heading towards Alchi. Our first stop is LIKIR to visit one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. The monastery, located on a promontory, dominates the valley. This monastery serves as a school (the monks are taught to read and write). It houses a beautiful collection of tangkas (religious paintings on fabric) absolutely unique in Ladakh. The village is also famous for its potters. Continuation to ALCHI where we will first go to the hotel for check-in and lunch. Then visit the monastery. Magnificently located in a green oasis, surrounded by apricot trees, it is undoubtedly the most interesting of Ladakh’s monasteries and the only one not located on a hill. The “Sacred Enclosure” of Alchi is made up of six small temples, the oldest of which were erected in the 11th century by Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055). In the 10th – 11th centuries, the king of Ladakh commissioned Richen Zangpo, “the Great Translator”, to build a few monasteries including Tabo (996) and Dankar, in the Spiti valley, and Lamayuru and Alchi in Ladakh. The Alchi complex is among the oldest temples in Ladakh which houses marvelous frescoes of Persian influence, monumental statues, finely crafted wood carvings: they clearly illustrate the Indo-Kashmiri style which then prevailed in Ladakh before the period of Tibetan influence. The sumtsek worship hall houses three painted statues over 4 m high on two levels representing Avalokiteshvara, Maitreya and Manjusri. Sumtsek and dukhang paintings can be ranked among the masterpieces of world art. The Alchi Monastery is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, this monastery is no longer active and the monks have moved to the Likir monastery. Dinner and accommodation at Ule Topko Ethnic Cottages (Alchi).

The Yung-Drung monastery of Lamayuru is located at an altitude of 3800 m in an incredible rock cirque with unreal colors. It dominates the village hidden at the bottom of the valley. Lamayuru, the oldest gompa in Ladakh founded as was the case of Alchi by the “Great Translator” Rinchen Zangpo, belongs to the Drigung-Kagyupa order. The complex is home to a number of shrines and exquisite wall paintings dating back to the royal period. Another attraction of Phyang Gompa is the ancient museum, dating back over 900 years. The museum houses a rich collection of idols, tangkas but also Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian firearms, harnesses, etc. The monastery hosts sacred dances on the 2nd and 3rd day of the 6th month of the Tibetan calendar. About Ladakh

Located between the western Himalaya and Tibet, Ladakh is one of the most. secluded areas in India, if not the world. It is a region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is a sparsely populated, high-altitude desert, situated at an elevation between 2,500m and 4,500m. The passes are between 4,500m and 6,000m high . The area has a Buddhist and Tibetan influence. All around are prayer wheels, chortens (the equivalent of Buddhist stupas), colorful prayer flags, and Buddhist gompas (monasteries). One of the highlights of the area is the friendliness (actual), helpfulness, and politeness of the people. Ladakh is known at "Little Tibet," or the last Shangri-La.

The most visited place in Ladakh is the interesting and atmospheric town of Leh. Ladakh is divided into three main regions: the area around Leh and the Indus Valley, the Zanskar Valley, and the Kargil and Suru Valley, which is influenced by Muslim culture. Most people with whom I talked to enjoyed their trip to Ladakh and recommended it. South of Ladakh is the main Himalaya mountain range, which includes Kun (7087m) and Nun (7135m) Mountains. In the north is the Zanskar mountain range. The Stok mountain range is just south of Leh. There are several lakes in eastern Ladakh, including Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri (tso means "lake"). The Zanskar and Sur Rivers flow through Ladakh.

Unless you fly, Ladakh can only be visited when the road is open, from late June through the middle of October. During this time, me days are warm and the nights a bit cool. It is a good idea to bring a sleeping bag. There is very little rain in Ladakh, so it is a good place to visit in July and August, during the rainy season in the rest of India. Between December and February, temperatures can drop to -30°C in Leh and -50°C in other areas. One thing ro note is that Ladakh is situated at a high altitude. Therefore, it is a good idea to spend a day or two acclimatizing upon your arrival in Leh.

The event is a highlight for many tourists, offering a unique cultural experience for both children and adults.

Although this walk is difficult and not recommended for small children, older youngsters and teens with a spirit of adventure will find it exciting. Rafting on the Zanskar River is a popular summer activity that offers a thrilling experience surrounded by breathtaking surroundings.

Alchi Monastery: A Cultural Gem

Alchi Monastery provides a tranquil and informative environment in which families may learn about Buddhist art and history. The tranquil atmosphere and picturesque surroundings make it an ideal location for a leisurely visit and a picnic by the river.

Magnetic Hill: A Curious Phenomenon.

A visit to Magnetic Hill is a pleasant and exciting addition to family tours of Ladakh. This location, on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar route, is well-known for its optical illusion, which causes cars to appear to slide uphill against gravity. This natural phenomena will delight both children and adults, making it a popular destination for families visiting Ladakh.

Lamayuru Monastery—The Moonland
