What is a car trip computer?

April 18, 2023 by carwow staff

' class=

Almost all modern cars have trip computers, but what are these systems, and how do they work?

Trip computers are fitted as standard to almost every car currently offered for sale. These electronic components display important information in the driver’s instrument binnacle about the journeys you take. The information a trip computer typically displays, include average and instant fuel consumption, the distance travelled since the computer was last reset, and the estimated range the amount of fuel in the tank of a petrol and diesel car, or power in the battery of an EV , provides.

The first electronic trip computer came along in 1978 and was fitted to the Cadillac Seville. Mechanical systems had existed prior to that, but the Seville’s ability to calculate its own fuel economy and allow the driver to input the number of miles to their destination was a novel idea.

Car trip computers have evolved and become more sophisticated since then (especially where electric cars are concerned), but the principle behind them has remained unchanged. Here, we detail what a trip computer is, how it works, and what sort of information you can reasonably expect to be fed by one.

What do trip computers do?

As the old adage goes, a trip computer does what it says on the tin: it computes data linked to a trip.

There are a five key areas that a trip computer provides information on:

  • Time : trip computers will tell you how long you have been travelling since you started your journey. If linked to the sat-nav, they can also tell you how long you have to go until you reach your destination.
  • Distance:  as you can imagine, this will tell you how far the car has travelled since the trip computer was last reset.
  • Speed:  this will tell you the average speed the car has travelled since you last reset the computer.
  • Fuel consumption: this will generally display the car’s average fuel consumption, and instant fuel consumption – IE how much fuel the car is using in the moment.
  • Range:  this will estimate you how far you can go before your fuel tank is empty, or an EV’s battery is depleted.

An electric car’s trip computer will typically show you all the information covered above, as well as the electric equivalent of fuel economy: instead miles per gallon, you will be show miles per kiloWatt hour (EG if you have a 100kWh battery and the car does 3 miles per kWh, you will get 300 miles from a charge. Some EVs show how many kWh a car is using to cover 100 miles, instead of miles mer kWh – see here for more information .

In addition to this, many EVs will synchronise their battery ranges with the sat-nav, calculating how far you can go on a charge, and where you will need to stop to recharge if you are undertaking a long journey.

Can car trip computers measure different journeys?

Many trip computers provide information for three ‘trips’: Trip A, Trip B, and since reset.

This allows all the information detailed above to be measured in separately and in parallel across three time periods. You can reset each trip individually, or reset all at once.

As an example, you may want to use Trip A to determine how far, how fast and how efficiently the car goes on each tank of fuel, resetting Trip A each time you fill up the tank.

You may also, however, want to see if a new route to work takes less time, provides better fuel economy or is faster than your usual route. You could therefore reset Trip B to determine this, while leaving trip A to keep ticking along in the background until you next need to fill up with fuel.

As for the ‘since reset’ information, many people never touch this, meaning it may show how far, fast and efficiently the car has travelled since it left the factory (or possibly since its battery was last removed).

Do also note that if you make a series of short journeys (EG pick the kids up from school, pop into the supermarket, head over to football practice) those journeys will often be treated as a single trip by the car, which will typically reset itself to a new ‘trip’ after the car has been switched off for four hours or so.

A trip computer is an electronic device that provides various bits of information to the driver of an automobile. It consists of an onboard computer that analyzes various functions of the car and a display screen that shows information to the driver. The typical trip computer shows constantly updated information, such as distance traveled, average speed, and average fuel consumption. Some are able to show information about more than one trip or driver and may have added functions such as low tire pressure warnings and maintenance reminders. Trip computers were once reserved for luxury vehicles, but they are increasingly available on less expensive models and typically can be added as an aftermarket option as well.

A trip computer has two main parts. The computer analyzes and records information about various vehicle systems. The display screen shows the resulting information to the driver in "real time." The display screen is usually located near the gauges, on the dashboard, or overhead. A trip computer is an extremely useful device that helps the driver stay aware of his or her driving habits and of the status of certain parts of the vehicle.

trip computer

Some of the information that is usually shown by the trip computer includes distance traveled and average speed. This can help the driver figure out how much of a trip remains and if he or she is likely to arrive at the destination on time. Most trip computers also display fuel consumption information, including a rate that is averaged over time and a current, up-to-the-minute reading of fuel usage per unit of distance traveled. Some also show the distance the car can still travel before running out of fuel. This type of information is particularly useful on long trips.

trip computer

The trip computer on some cars can also show additional information that may be useful to the driver. Low tire pressure warnings, for example, let the driver know if the tires are under or over-inflated. Maintenance reminders, such as remaining oil life, are often incorporated in the latest models as well. Many computers are able to switch between two separate trips or drivers and allow motorists to select which information they would like to see.

At one time, only premium car brands and models had trip computers available as an option. As technology becomes more widespread, many less expensive vehicles also come with this device standard or offer it as an option. There are also several types of aftermarket trip computers that can be added to a car that isn't equipped with one. Aftermarket devices are usually mounted in the dashboard and connected to the electrical and other systems. These units should be installed by a qualified professional.

I am looking to buy a car with satellite-navigation fitted. I am confused by a lot of ads that mention a 'computer' or 'trip computer'. What do they mean by that? Does it mean that the car has satellite-navigation?

A trip computer in a car has various functions, but none of them will direct you to your destination.

They can log distance travelled, provide instantaneous fuel consumption, average fuel consumption and other variations around this theme.

You need to specifically look for adverts which mention satellite-navigation or sat-nav if you want to be told where to go.

ScanGaugeE installs in just minutes without tools and does not require batteries or an external power source. A single connection to the diagnostic connector under the dashboard is all that is needed. All data and power are derived from the single OBDII connection. The Control/Display unit can be mounted up to 6 feet from the under-dash diagnostic connector. The included Velcro attachment system allows it to be quickly detached and used to troubleshoot other vehicles. Simple 5-button operation allows you to quickly and easily access the powerful features of the ScanGaugeE.

Real-time Fuel Economy Via Graphic Feedback

ScanGaugeE is a unique dashboard mounted tool that provides you with real-time information about your vehicle's immediate fuel economy, relevant engine processes and a wide range of other important data points which it gathers from your vehicle's onboard computer system and relates to you by way of an intuitive graphic display. Problems surrounding the rising cost of automotive fuels and the impact that driving has on the environment are here to stay. But according to a report issued by the US government, adjusting your driving habits can increase fuel-economy by up to 33%. In addition, we all have a carbon footprint - the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that each of us is personally responsible for releasing into the environment by our actions. The good news is that drivers can easily adjust their driving style to improve fuel economy in the short and long-term, lower their CO2 emissions and even monitor and troubleshoot diagnostic information that your vehicle automatically generates via its network of onboard computers with the instant feedback provided by ScanGaugeE.

Three Tools in One

The ScanGaugeE draws diagnostic information from your vehicle's OBD-II port and funnels this into useful automotive data points. These data points are organized into three areas of functionality designed to maximize useful real-time information, no matter the user. These groupings are: trip computer, digital gauges and scan tool.

Trip Computer

The trip computer functionality built into the ScanGaugeE automatically tracks five sets of trip data: current trip, today's trip, previous day's trip, current tank trip and tank to empty. Each of these features 11 individually stored parameters. These data parameter points include:

  • Fuel economy
  • Maximum coolant temperature
  • Maximum RPM
  • Maximum speed
  • Average speed
  • Distance to empty
  • Time to empty
  • Fuel to empty

Digital Gauges

The digital gauge functionality of the ScanGaugeE allows for up to five gauge sets: three built-in and two custom. These include: fuel efficiency screen, CO2 screen, fuel cost screen, and your two customizable screens. Examples of customizable gauge screens include:

  • Fuel economy (MPG or liters/100Km)
  • Fuel rate (GPH or LPH)
  • Ignition Timing (before and after TDC)
  • Manifold pressure (not available on some vehicles)
  • Tachometer (RPM) - accurate to within 1 RPM
  • Engine load
  • Throttle position
  • Digital speedometer (MPH or KPH adjustable for tire size or gearing changes)
  • Battery voltage (reads to 0.1-volts)
  • Coolant temperature
  • Intake air temperature
  • Open/closed loop
  • CO2 (displays current and trip CO2 production)

Modern vehicles are constantly monitoring themselves via their internal computer systems, with the result being the output of diagnostic codes, but these codes are usually not readable without a code reader. The ScanGaugeE allows you to troubleshoot your own vehicle, read these error codes -- the conditions present when the error occurred -- and the turn off the "Check Engine" light. Taken together, these abilities help avoid costly trips to the mechanic we could all do without.

  • Reads and clears trouble codes
  • Shows conditions when trouble was detected
  • Turns off "Check Engine" lamp
  • Shows when emissions tests have been completed and vehicle is ready to pass OBD-II emissions testing

What is OBD-II?

Since 1996 standardized Onboard Diagnostic systems -- currently OBD-II -- have been mandated for virtually all cars and light trucks manufactured for the US market. These provide automotive technicians and DIYers with insight into the increasingly complex inner workings of modern passenger vehicles. Traditionally professional grade diagnostic results required large and/or expensive scanning tools to translate diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and other data generated by the internal computer networks of your vehicle when the check engine/malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard goes off, but the Scan Tool functionality of the the ScanGaugeE provides an affordable option that allows access to much of this information.

Easy Installation with No Tools Required

ScanGaugeE installs in just minutes without tools and does not require batteries or an external power source. Simply plug the CAT-5 style end of the included cable into the back of the unit, and plug the opposite end, which terminates in an OBD-II connector, into your vehicle's OBD-II port. Virtually every vehicle manufactured since 1996 has an OBD-II port, usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side. This port is standardized ensuring that the ScanGaugeE cable connector will fit. All power used is drawn from this connection and it serves as an interface to your vehicle's onboard diagnostic computer network. The detachable six (6) foot cord along with the Velcro attachment system for the display also allows ScanGaugeE to be mounted just about anywhere on the dash or console while staying connected to your vehicle.

Key Features

‘I'm not back, I'm better': Dallas' Sha'Carri Richardson's quest for redemption

Her next big hurdle -- the olympic trials in june to qualify for team usa at the paris olympics, by laura harris • published may 14, 2024 • updated on may 15, 2024 at 11:00 am.

Dallas’ Hometown Hopeful Sha’Carri Richardson says, “I’m not back, I’m better.” Sprinting toward the Paris Olympics , the runner doesn’t hide behind her journey -- she embraces it.

Richardson claimed the title of fastest woman in the world at the World Athletic Championships in Budapest, Hungary in October 2023. Her meteoric rise is no surprise to the people in North Texas who have been following her career since she excelled at Dallas ISD's Carter High School.

“Dallas is a special place to me,” Richardson said. “Dallas means a lot to me because of the simple fact that it’s where I’m from. I started my journey there of being not even just an athlete, but a child, a young woman.”

The 23-year-old said Dallas means many things to her, but culture, big city, family and where dreams come true rush to mind.

It's also a place that is giving back to her, as well.

“I ended up finding out a track was going to be named after me after Budapest, after winning [the 100-meter race making her the fastest woman in the world],” Richardson said. “My godmother, who is actually my coach, who was my high school coach, told me that they want to name a track after me or something like a field. So I thought it was a park at first. But actually, learning it was a track that I literally started my career of track and field on, it was was literally a full circle moment.”

Her name is etched in Dallas history.

‘Slap in the face' Family of North Texas native murdered in 2020 protest calls pardon for Daniel Perry

The Sha’Carri Richardson Track at John Kincaide Stadium is located near David W. Carter High School, where Richardson once competed as a Dallas ISD student-athlete beneath the name of the great Jesse Owens, whom the full track and field complex is named after.

The Jesse Owens Memorial Complex on Polk Street is named after James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens, who was a Team USA track athlete who won four gold medals (long jump, 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay) at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Owens became the first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals at a single Games. She said the gravity of this honor is not lost on her.

Her journey to this point is not without disappointment.

After qualifying for Team USA at the Olympic Trials in 2021, Richardson tested positive for THC, the chemical that is in cannabis. Because of the positive test, she was disqualified for one month and lost her chance to compete at the Tokyo Olympics that year.

Her dream was cut short, but not forgotten.

Richardson took that time in her life in stride, now being able to call herself the fastest woman in the world.

“I’m not back, I’m better,” she famously said after the race and has continued to say since.

She credited her family with helping her build the strength to start again knowing that the chance at the Paris Olympics was just three years away from the disappointment in 2021.

“My mom has definitely been a pillar in my life to just be better,” Richardson said. “Understanding you may not come from ideal circumstances, but at the same time, it’s not where you start, it’s where you, it’s the direction you want to go. I wouldn’t have even started running track if it wasn’t for my mom.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by USATF (@usatf)

Through the trials and tribulations and the ups and downs, she said this moment is what she has dreamed of.

“I know this sounds very cliché, but all my hard work paid off,” Richardson said. “I just also [have been] an inspiration to my city. Actually seeing them and giving me that love. I know that the sky is the limit when it comes to what I can achieve.”

Richardson is currently training for the U.S. Olympics Trials which are June 21-30 in Eugene, Oregon.

If she makes the Olympic team, she will be well on her way to becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in the 100 meters in nearly 30 years since it was won by the late Florence Griffith-Joyner.

The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

I took these photos near Ranfurly in Central Otago, New Zealand. Anyone can use them please spread far and wide. :-) https://t.co/NUWpLiqY2S — Dr Andrew Dickson reform/ACC (@AndrewDickson13) May 10, 2024

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Kansas City residents and businesses struggle with ongoing computer system problems

Both residents and businesses are feeling the impact of Kansas City, Missouri's ongoing computer system problems.

Customers have been coming to the Water Services Department on 63rd Street for the better part of the last two weeks to pay their water bills in person.

The ongoing problems mean customers can't pay those bills online or by phone.

When they pay in person, customers must use cash or a check because the system cannot process credit or debit cards.

Franci Talamantez-Witte made a special trip on her day off to pay her bill.

"It was on my list of things to do today. So, I was prepared. But I feel bad for the people who don't have, you know, the availability to come in from 9 to 4 when they're open," she said.

Alejandro Najera brought his four-month-old son Damian in a baby carriage to pay his bill Wednesday.

"I think that it should have been addressed, you know, maybe a day or two after it happened or, you know, immediately," he said.

Sharmone Jackson moved into her new home at the beginning of April but never received a water bill.

"I don't know if they're going to take our water off, or I need to see what's up because they didn't let me know anything," she said.

Jackson found out she does have a water bill due and will make a second trip to Water Services to pay it.

The city's Compass system is critical for builders, contractors, and other people working with Kansas City.

That system is used for permitting, licensing, and scheduling inspections.

Shawn Woods is building a model home in a neighborhood in Kansas City's northland.

Currently, after the sewer and water lines were installed, there is a potentially dangerous open trench at the construction site.

However, he's not able to get the necessary inspection with Water.

Services to approve that work, so the entire project is on hold.

"We have a construction loan that costs us time and money to have. And at this point we're pretty much at a standstill without knowing when to fill that trench. And we can't go forward with framing the house, put in the foundation floor. So, it just kind of stops things and there's no information on when Compass is going to be back up," Woods said.

It's a similar situation near 18th and Main in downtown Kansas City, where there's a giant fenced-off hole in the ground.

Industrial Salvage & Wrecking did the demolition work at that location.

Company owner and president Chuck Cacioppo, Jr., says he's sent a picture to the new owner of the property showing the work was done correctly.

But he hasn't been able to get an inspection to approve the work.

Cacioppo has a list of projects already permitted where his crews can do some work.

But he says that work will soon run out.

"If it goes on too much longer, we're not going to have any permits, and we're not going to be able to do any work. Then what are we going to do as far as making a living? We have 35 employees. They're going to be sitting there doing nothing if we don't have permits," Cacioppo said.

On Wednesday, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the city's top priority is determining if any of its data has been compromised.

The city has addresses, social security numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and other information from citizens, customers, and vendors.

"I just pay my water bill monthly over the phone. So, I don't know. I hope that nothing is out there. Just got to keep an eye on my bank account, I guess," Talamantez-Witte said.
