The Airlines That Take Paypal & Paying For Any Flight With Paypal Credit

Last Updated on April 15, 2020

PayPal isn’t only for sending money or buying other people’s junk on eBay. It’s potentially one of the most secure ways to buy anything online including flights!

But if you want to pay for your flight using PayPal you’ll need to find airlines that take Paypal right?

Well no…

There are some airlines that accept PayPal directly but there are also ways to pay for your flights and even hotels using PayPal even if the airline does not offer checkout using PayPal.

And because of PayPal’s security features and dispute resolution, you’ll be covered from anything going wrong with the purchase. Using PayPal to buy flights is arguably more secure than using your credit card.

The post will cover which airlines accept PayPal directly and also how you can still use PayPal to buy flights when the airline doesn’t take PayPal.

You can even buy flights for most airlines and routes using PayPal Credit (formerly known as ‘PayPal Bill Me Later’.

Which Airlines Accepts PayPal

We checked all the major US airlines to see which airlines listed PayPal as a payment method.

Here are the results:

These are United States airlines, many other airlines around the world now accept PayPal as a payment method.

Why Buy Flights Using Paypal Instead Of A Credit Card?

Paying with PayPal offers some benefits compared to using your credit card or debit card.

  • Security – When you use your PayPal account to buy airline tickets you don’t need to enter any credit card details. Choose PayPal at the end of the booking process and you will be directed to your PayPal account and log in using your email address and password. PayPal will bill one of your existing bank accounts, debit cards, or credit cards depending on what funding source you have prioritized.
  • PayPal Credit – If you buy your flights using PayPal Credit then you can have 0% interest for 4 months. This means that PayPal effectively bills you later for the flights you buy today. PayPal credit used to be known as “bill me later”.
  • PayPal Dispute Resolution – PayPal loves travelers and is on your side when it comes to dispute resolution. Check what David on Twitter has to say about the protection that PayPal offers him when paying for travel.
Airbnb hosts and airlines never want to give refunds, so good thing I didn’t use a card. PayPal dispute has never failed me. David on Twitter

Travel Sites That Accept PayPal

PayPal doesn’t need to be business partners with the airline for you to buy your flight tickets using their digital wallet.

If an airline does not accept PayPal at the checkout you can potentially buy the exact same flight through a 3rd party travel booking site that does accept PayPal.

Examples of travel websites that take PayPal are:

  • Expedia.com
  • AlternativeAirline.com
  • HotWire.com

Depending on your credit limit you can buy your flights, hotel, and even car rental using PayPal credit.

You can use PayPal credit anywhere that PayPal is accepted so if they accept PayPal you can book your flight using your PayPal Credit facility.

The Verdict

It’s relatively simple to pay for flight bookings using PayPal, even if the airline in question doesn’t accept PayPal!

With PayPal flights, you won’t even need to expose your credit card number.

And with the potential of PayPal Credit, you might not even need to pay for your flights today if you don’t want to.

All in all, this makes PayPal a very attractive way payment option and one that is increasingly available.

16 Airlines That Let You Book Flights Now and Pay Later

Planning a trip but don't want to pay for it all at once? These sites offer book-now, pay-later flights.

Orbon Alija/Getty Images

If you think a vacation is out of your reach, think again. Some airlines and online travel agencies have services that allow you to book a trip now and pay for it over time.

Affirm, PayPal, Uplift, and Klarna are among the book-now, pay-later services travel companies and airlines offer. Here, we break down the basics of these and airlines' own "BNPL" options so you can secure flights when the prices are lowest, even if you don't want to pay for them in full upfront.

Airlines Offering Book-now, Pay-later Flights

AeroMexico connects major U.S. cities to Latin American destinations like Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. The airline partners with Uplift to provide a monthly payment option. When you go to book a flight, you'll see an option to pay in monthly installments. Click through and you'll be asked for any personal information Uplift needs to process the loan.

You can also pay in installments through Klarna. Download the Klarna extension for Chrome or the app and you should see a pink "K" icon that will show you financing options. AeroMexico takes PayPal, which means you can use PayPal Credit to split up payments if you're approved.

Pay monthly for Air Canada flights and Air Canada Vacations packages with Uplift or PayPal Credit.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines partners with Uplift and Klarna to offer financing for flights.

Allegiant also uses Uplift and Klarna to provide payment plans. Select the Allegiant Pay option at checkout to choose financing through Uplift.

American Airlines

American Airlines offers several ways to buy now and pay later, including Klarna; PayPal Credit; Citi Flex Pay for select Citi cardholders; and Affirm, which has biweekly, monthly, and interest-free options but doesn't cover the cost of any flight extras, like luggage. American Airlines Vacations also gives you the option to pay monthly with Uplift.

Azul Airlines is a low-cost Brazilian airline that accepts payments through Uplift and PayPal.

Delta Air Lines

Delta offers PayPal Credit as a payment option, and you can pay using Affirm if you book your trip through Delta Vacations , a service for SkyMiles members that bundles flights, hotels, transportation, and activities.

One of the United Arab Emirates' two flag carriers, this airline partners with financing institutions Uplift and Klarna. You can also pay with PayPal Credit.

Frontier Airlines

Budget carrier Frontier Airlines lets you pay monthly installments through Uplift on purchases of $49 or more. If eligible, you will see the option at checkout. Frontier is also a Klarna retail partner.

KLM offers customers the option of holding a fare for 72 hours for a non-refundable fee. This is great if you find a fare that you want to book but need a few days to think about it. In addition, the airline takes PayPal Credit. This service is shown on the payment page as a "Bill Me Later" option, but directs you to your PayPal wallet.

Lufthansa has a list of payment methods on its website . Some monthly payment options are available specifically for residents of Brazil and Colombia. U.S. residents may pay monthly through PayPal Credit.

Porter Airlines

Porter , a Canadian airline, allows customers to use Uplift and PayPal to purchase flights across the U.S. and Canada.

Qatar Airways

Unless you're flying from Brazil, Brunei, or Kazakhstan, you can hold any Qatar Airways booking for up to 72 hours. How long prospective travelers can hold their Qatar flights depends on where they intend to fly to and from. The "Hold My Booking" option, available on the payment page, requires a non-refundable fee that doesn't go toward the price of your ticket. In most cases, you can also use PayPal Credit.

Southwest Airlines uses Uplift to break the cost of the flight up into fixed monthly payments. It also accepts PayPal Credit and Klarna.

Sunwing connects Canadian cities with destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. You can pay for plane tickets in monthly installments through Uplift.

United Airlines

Use Uplift, PayPal Credit, or Klarna to pay for United Airlines flights in monthly installments. The company also has a program called FareLock that allows you to pay a fee to hold a fare for three, seven, or 14 days before paying for it in full. If you decide not to buy the ticket, you forfeit the fee. This service is offered only on itineraries wholly operated by United Airlines and/or United Express.

Online Travel Agencies Offering Monthly Payment Options

Alternative airlines.

Any ticket booked through Alternative Airlines can be paid for in weekly, biweekly, or monthly installments with Uplift. The online travel agency markets itineraries by more than 600 airlines, and Uplift financing can be used for all of them. You can also split payments through Klarna.

CheapOair.com

CheapOair uses Affirm to offer customers a monthly payment option.

Funjet Vacations

Funjet Vacations uses Uplift to offer monthly payments for its flights and vacation packages.

Priceline uses Affirm to handle monthly payments. Select the "monthly payments" option on the secure billing step of the booking process and choose from three-, six-, or 12-month options. Alternatively, break it up into four payments over six weeks using Klarna.

How Buy-now, Pay-later Services Work

Airlines and travel agencies partner with BNPL services like the travel-specific Uplift or the more broadly available Affirm to offer monthly payment options. Some take payments through PayPal Credit and/or Klarna. Learn about the differences between these services and how they work.

Affirm allows customers to pay monthly or every two weeks. Terms can last up to 48 months for the largest loans, but more typically, they last up to a year. Interest rates vary by person, ranging from 0% to 36% APR, and are determined at the time of sign-up. A down payment and credit check might be required when you apply for a loan.

To use Affirm, you will need a phone number to use as an account login. The service is available only in the U.S. and Canada. Once you've created your account and gotten approved for a loan amount, you can set up auto-pay or pay each month via the app or website. You can find a full list of Affirm's travel partners, including airlines and accommodations, on its website .

PayPal Credit

This is a monthly payment option provided by travel companies that take PayPal. Typically, you'll choose PayPal as your payment method, and once you sign into your PayPal account, you can choose PayPal Credit . As of 2023, the variable purchase APR is about 28% for new accounts, but you can avoid paying interest altogether if you pay the loan off within six months. Loan applications are subject to credit approval.

Uplift is the leading pay-over-time financing service in the travel space, partnering with cruise lines, hotel chains, airlines, and more. Once you have selected a product, like your flight, you are shown a per-month rate based on the price of the items in your shopping cart. When you get to the payment page and choose monthly payment as your option, you will be asked for some personal details, and once you click "check rate," you will be told whether you've been approved. Uplift offers an APR of 0% to 36% based on your credit. You won't be penalized for paying late or early, and you can set up autopay so the money comes out of your account automatically.

Klarna breaks up the price of your ticket into monthly payments or four equal payments to be made two weeks apart. Add the Klarna extension to your Chrome browser or download the app on your phone, then book your flight as usual, selecting Klarna at checkout. The first payment will be due upfront. Klarna offers an APR of 0% to about 30%.

Ease and Comfort: The Advantages of Using PayPal for Flight Bookings

Whether you’re jetting off for a business trip or embarking on a long-awaited vacation, you can use PayPal to book business-class lounges or snag economy seats. Increasingly less confined by geography or specific airlines, PayPal for flight bookings is becoming more global.

Booking a flight can be a whirlwind of excitement. The anticipation of new places and experiences can often leave you in a rush to secure the best deal. However, this is precisely when you should remember to pay close attention to the details, especially when considering payment options.

Rules To Fly By: Understanding Geographic Restrictions for Flight Bookings

Using PayPal for flights can provide a convenient and secure method of payment. Its “virtual card” feature obscures your real credit card information. However, some airlines might only allow PayPal payments from customers located in specific regions or countries, or for customers paying in particular currencies.

For example, certain airlines might only accept PayPal payments from U.S.-based customers, whereas others might restrict payment to customers who use their mobile app to book flights. Each airline has its own policies, so don’t assume one airline’s rules will apply to another — it’s always wise to check directly with the airline you’re considering.

Check Your Baggage: A Note on Possible Fees

It’s also important to be aware of potential transaction charges. While most airlines integrate PayPal payments at minimal or no cost, others may levy additional fees. These charges might look small initially, but they can add up. Be sure to check for any extra fees to avoid unplanned expenses. It’s also a good idea to review  fees that PayPal may charge to be sure you’re up to speed on the fine print.

With many airlines now supporting PayPal in their payment options, booking flights has become even more convenient and secure. However, it’s worth noting that airlines may change their policies occasionally. It’s best to check if your preferred airline accepts PayPal for flights before finalizing your travel plans.

Booking air travel with PayPal is a good choice for travelers who want the convenience and security of using a digital wallet, and it’s a widely available option for many destinations. Remember to double-check the details with your chosen air carrier, ensure you’re aware of any additional fees and always book well in advance in case you run into any problems. Safe travels!

Which Airlines Accept Paypal Payments for Flights?

paypal airlines

Over the last years Paypal has firmly established itself as a mainstream online payment provider with millions of users worldwide. An increasing number of international airlines offer Paypal as a payment method for flight tickets.

Many people prefer paying by Paypal for convenience and security as they often do not have to fill any credit card details directly online during the transaction.

Here are a few things to bear in mind when using Paypal for flights:

*Before booking you should already have a Paypal account , which is relatively simple to set up.

*Be aware that some airlines can have various restrictions for making Paypal payments. Paypal may only be available for residents of certain countries or for payments in specific currencies.

*When considering using Paypal as a form of payment do check the fee the airline charges – and compare this to other forms of payment that may be available.

*When paying by Paypal it is possible to make the payment via a credit card, debit card, bank transfer or using any positive balance in your Paypal account.

*Do remember that paying directly by credit card in most countries offers a higher degree of consumer protection should the airline or travel company go bankrupt. For example, in the UK paying by credit card for goods priced £100 to £30,000 makes the retailer and card company jointly liable. And paying by credit card via Paypal does not offer the same protection as a direct credit card payment.

*For those who do not have, do not want or cannot get a credit card, then Paypal does offer an alternative payment method for flights worldwide.

*In the US, Paypal also offers Paypal Credit (formerly BillMeLater) which allows users to defer payment for 6 months. A limited amount of airlines let you pay with Paypal Credit.

For historical reference these were: Air Asia X, Air Tran, Delta Airlines, Jet Blue, Midwest, Monarch Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Southwest and US Airways.

Interestingly only 4 of the original 9 airlines remain operational, as a result of past bankruptcies and takeovers.

The Paypal airlines list has grown from 9 airlines (2008), 14 airlines (2009), 15 airlines (2010), 23 airlines (2011-2013), 34 airlines (2014), 42 airlines (2015), 45 airlines (2016), 54 airlines (2017), 59 airlines (2018), 73 airlines (2019) to 77 airlines (2020).

Paypal was actually first introduced as a payment format for airline flights back in 2007. The very first airline to accept Paypal was Northwest Airlines in June 2007 shortly followed by Southwest Airlines a few days later. Monarch Airlines became the first airline in Europe to accept Paypal in October 2007.

Here are the dates of the 12 airlines which first started accepting Paypal in 2007 and 2008 :

1. Northwest Airlines – 28 June 2007 2. Southwest Airlines – 9 July 2007 3. Midwest Airlines – 2 September 2007 4. US Airways – 16 October 2007 5. Monarch Airlines – 23 October 2007 6. Air Tran – 5 November 2007 7. JetBlue – 4 April 2008 8. Delta Airlines – 28 May 2008 9. Air Asia X – 10 June 2008 10. Continental Airlines – 1 September 2008 11. American Airlines – 13 November 2008 12. Jet2 – 15 December 2008

To this day Paypal remains an important payment processor and the current list should slowly expand further. We are also seeing new forms of payment such as Bitcoin (and other crypto-currencies) hitting the mainstream. In July 2014 AirBaltic became the first airline to announce it would accept Bitcoin on its website.

The main Paypal Airlines List is always a fluid work in progress, so if you know of any other airline that we may have missed out please drop us a line !

Many thanks to readers Joachim (March 2017 and April 2018), Filippo (June 2017), Rakesh (July 2017), Sinisa (February 2018), Michael (April 2019) and Robert (February 2020) for contributing to past updates.

Bethaney I had no clue you could do Paypal for many of these charges. People and businesses know more digital nomads – and part time travelers – are using creative/alternative ways to pay for stuff. Why not listen to the people, right? I myself use PP so a few of these methods would work nicely for me.

Thanks for the share Bethaney. Keep on inspiring!

Thanks Ryan! I hope these tips help you out when you’re next booking some travel.

There are a lot of things and places I buy at online that I won’t use anything but Paypal but I’ve never really thought of using it for travel. I don’t think it’s an option with a most of my preferred airlines and booking sites from Australia but I’ll definitely watch out for it going forward

' src=

I would have also never thought about using Paypal. That is interesting. I think, my biggest concern though, would be the fees. What has been your experience with that?

' src=

These are actually some really good tips. Thanks for sharing!

' src=

I love the ease of paypal but I had no idea how useful it was! Thanks for putting this together

' src=

I’m a big fan of Paypal. I never thought to use it when I am travelling though, but it’s very sound advice

' src=

I had no idea you could use paypal to pay for so many travel related things – very eye opening!

' src=

I’m not really an avid paypal user, to be honest, but maybe I should give it a decent try if it makes my travellings easier!

' src=

This list is great! I just recently booked my flight home using my paypal account with Qatar Airways and didn’t know about that discount code. Really useful tips!

' src=

Nice roundup! This will be so helpful for those who do not want to use credit or debit cards, although PayPal does offer one of those, too, in the U.S.

' src=

Paypal is really picking up! I am in China right now, which is a difficult place to book with US credit cards, especially for domestic flights. Being able to use Paypal solved all my problems.

' src=

I’ve started to use Paypal more recently because it is so secure and easy. I’ve booked flights with no extra fees which is great if you regularly spend on travel. It just makes sense for businesses to offer this as a payment option. Great advice, I’ll be doing this more and for accommodation next time. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to withdraw and spend one’s Paypal earnings in the country of the currency? ie I’m Australian, but have earned some USD which are in Paypal, and would like to use those whilst in the USA rather than pay for conversion fees etc both ways. Hope that makes sense.

I don’t know that you could withdraw cash in US unless you had one of those fancy Paypal debit/credit cards that you can get with US accounts. You CAN spend in USD on all these kinds of booking sites like Priceline, Hotels.com etc. So you’re earning and spending USD without converting it to AUD. Does that make sense?

Hi Bethaney Thanks for the reply. Yes it does make sense, and that’s what I thought, I was just wondering if anyone knew of some way to spend Paypal $$ in retail stores.

' src=

Hi Bethany,

Thanks for the article. I’m actually looking for any websites similar to Viator.com that sells tickets/pass for attractions? Viator is good but they don’t receive payment through PayPal. May be you can add it to your list 🙂 Have a great day!

Cheers, Sunu

Hi Sunu. I don’t know of any sites like that off the top of my head unfortunately. What were you specifically trying to book? What location? I’ll take a look around and see if there is anything I can add to my post. Thanks for commenting! Bethaney

Thanks for your reply Bethaney, Greetings from Indonesia. I’m planning to take my family to go on a vacation to New Zealand. While I can use agoda to book my accomodations, I still have difficulty to book/purchase main attractions tickets in this beautiful country, such as Hobbiton Movie set, Waitomo Caves, Shotover Jet, Milford Sound cruise, etc. We also plan to travel on a campervan in South Island, so it also nice to know if there’s any Holiday Park/Campervan Site that accept PayPal as payment method. Many thanks in advance Bethaney 🙂 You have a great day.

' src=

Awesome post! I didn’t know we could use paypal this much! So useful!

Thanks a lot, Bethaney!

' src=

Neither Cheaptickets, bravofly, nor Hotwire gave me the option to use PayPal. Your info might be out of date. The only travel service site I found that offers payment by PayPal is cheapoair.com, but their prices suck.

It sometimes depends on which airline you’re booking and even which country you’re flying from and to. Keep trying! Have a look at Webjet too.

' src=

I am interested in using PayPal Credit to finance a vacation (12 month financing, for example). Is that possible? If so, through what Travel Agencies, etc.?

Financing a vacation is a bad idea in my opinion.

' src=

Philippine-based airline Cebu Pacific accepts PayPal too. 🙂

Thanks Cyril! That’s good to know. I booked a Cebu flight a while back but they didn’t have Paypal. Looks like they do now! Will add it to the list.

' src=

I wasn’t able to use Paypal for flights on Hotwire, Dec. 2016, despite their FAQs still mentioning Paypal payments. The option is not there at checkout. I called them and got transferred around, was on hold forever, so eventually gave up.

I think with Hotwire it actually depends on what airline you’re trying to book flights with unfortunately.

' src=

Question: if you have no balance on paypal, can you still book/pay for a plane ticket?

No. Your account needs to have enough money in it.

' src=

G – I think Bethany must be thinking of paypal credit. You didn’t specify. You don’t have to have a balance on paypal to make any purchase on it so long as it is linked to your bank account, because that is where the money will come out of. However, if you wish to use paypal credit, and stretch payments out, then you need to have a paypal credit account and be below your limit.

' src=

Lulululu, I want to book a hotel on expedia and stay there for two nights. I don’t have any money in my PayPal but I have PayPal credit. If i book the hotel and chose the PayPal option will it count as credit or do i need money in my account to book it? And if it counts as credit, I’m able to pay it off monthly right?

No idea sorry!

We just paid for the US portion of an upcoming trip on paypal and found this website very helpful. However, I would like to caution everyone about using booking websites like hotwire. We’ve twice recently used them for hotels, the second time paying in advance, only to discover the hotel had no room. The staff at the second hotel was very helpful and told us this happens ALL THE TIME. The first time, we were in Washington DC and checking in fairly late at night. The hotel staff was hostile and seemed to blame us for the over booking. They didn’t; even want us to use their electricity to plug in our laptop and search for another hotel. Neither we, nor hotwire were able to find us a hotel at all. We ended up heading home a day early, after napping in a walmart parking lot for a few hours. The second time we used expedia. We were in Charleston and were able to find another hotel, but it was a huge hassle, and we ended up in an efficiency place instead of the boutique hotel we had taken the time and care to book.. There is no way on earth I will ever use a booking site again. I certainly would not use one for over seas travel, where we likely would not know of a place that would be open all night and had bathroom facilities. Since it is my daughter who will be flying, and she’s relatively inexperienced, you better believe I would not use one. Be aware too that there are far fewer booking websites than you may think. Several of them are owned by the same company.

So what do you do instead? For this upcoming trip, we used a booking site of find what we wanted, and then booked it directly through the airline.

BUT, there is something else. We began to realise we were only seeing a handful of international airlines, when in fact, many fly out of major hubs like Atlanta and JFK.. You end up paying quite a bit for the convenience of using an airline that can afford to be contracted with one of the booking sites. In the case of the international leg of the journey, the best price we could find after days of searching was $1250.00 round trip. By looking at what airlines that are not associated with a booking site had to offer, we ended up paying 749.00 round trip. Thy didn’t accept paypal, but for that amount of money, who cares?

Fly now, pay later. how to buy plane tickets with uplift, affirm and paypal pay in 4.

Give yourself some breathing room when booking a vacation with "fly now, pay later" options.

travel that accepts paypal

Buy now, pay later options are popping up everywhere. And if you haven't bought flight tickets since before the pandemic, you may not know that you can buy tickets now and repay the balance later using BNPL apps .  Paying for flights with  travel and airline credit cards can earn you miles and rewards points -- but credit cards also come along with high, compounding interest rates, which are steadily rising as inflation continues to surge . Also, unlike credit cards which charge  compound interest  (which means interest accrues on the balance and any previous interest charges), many BNPL services are interest-free and those that aren't often only charge simple interest on the balance borrowed. Though debit cards eliminate the interest rate issue, if you need more space to pay for a trip, using a BNPL service to book your flight may make sense.

Here's everything you need to know about fly now, pay later options.

How to book a plane ticket with BNPL

Many airlines are incorporating BNPL services as a payment method at checkout. But there are also other ways to take advantage of BNPL services when booking flights. We'll run you through the four best strategies below.

1. Buy tickets directly from airlines with BNPL plans

Several airlines have direct partnerships with BNPL services. We recommend thoroughly reviewing the terms of each service before selecting one as your payment method. Some BNPL services have late fees, charge high interest rates or require your first payment at the time of purchase. Many services offer different installment plan options, like four payments every two weeks at 0% interest; a pay-in-30-days strategy (where the entire balance is due 30 days after making the purchase); or longer financing terms of three, six, 12 or even 36 months at a higher interest rate. It's important to review each installment plan closely to avoid high interest when possible and be sure that you can make payments on schedule.

Airlines with BNPL partnerships ( Uplift , Affirm and MarcusPay ) currently include:

  • Aeromexico - Uplift
  • Air Canada - Uplift
  • Alaska Airlines - Uplift
  • Allegiant Air - Uplift
  • American Airlines - Affirm
  • Frontier Airlines - Uplift
  • JetBlue - MarcusPay
  • Lufthansa - Uplift
  • Southwest Airlines - Uplift
  • Spirit Airlines - Uplift
  • TAP Air Portugal - Uplift
  • United Airlines - Uplift

To buy tickets using a BNPL service, you'll visit the airline's website, select your tickets and click the BNPL option at checkout. You'll then be redirected to the BNPL website or app where you'll either enter your login or create an account. From there, the BNPL service may offer different options for splitting up your payments, should explain the interest rate you qualify for (if applicable) and may require your first payment at the time of purchase.

2. Avoid interest with PayPal Pay in 4

PayPal, an online payment service, can be used as a payment method for most airline tickets. And now you can select PayPal's Pay in 4 service, which lets you divide your payment into four biweekly (automatic) installments at 0% interest. While the first installment is due at the time of purchase, you'll have around 45 days to pay off the remaining balance.

3. Book via a third-party travel site

Some third-party flight booking services -- including Kayak, Priceline, Expedia and Travelocity -- offer BNPL options for any airline. If the airline you prefer to fly with is not offering a direct BNPL payment option, you can search for tickets on one of these third-party sites instead.

4. Use a virtual BNPL card

Do you already have a BNPL service you like to use? Many buy now, pay later companies offer virtual cards , which allow you to purchase items online at websites that don't offer BNPL payment options.

Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna, ZIP (formerly QuadPay) and most other major BNPL services offer this option. To get started, you'll need to know the final cost of your purchase, including tax. Log in to your BNPL account and apply for a virtual card, inputting the full purchase amount when prompted. It's helpful to round up to ensure that the card is issued for an amount that fully covers your purchase. Once approved, you'll be given a virtual card number, expiration date and CVV (card verification value), which you can use as a payment method when ordering airline tickets online.

The amount you spend on the virtual card will then be applied to your BNPL account to be repaid in installments.

5. Alternatively, consider a 0% APR credit card

If the BNPL methods you qualify for have high interest rates or if you need more time to repay your purchase, there is another option -- a  0% APR credit card . This type of credit card offers no interest for an introductory period, usually between 15 and 20 months. Just be sure you can repay the total balance within the introductory period, otherwise interest will begin accruing and piling on to your debt.

PayPal may be quite easy to set up, but it is never a good experience if you decide on setting up a PayPal account during the online booking process. It is recommended to fully set up a PayPal account before making any bookings or purchases in general.

Things to Consider When Using PayPal as a Payment Option

Regulations in each airline can differ, especially between countries with currencies that are not available on PayPal. The rules of allowed currencies in purchasing flights through PayPal may be limited depending on the country. These factors can make it a bit complicated in identifying not only which airlines accept payment through PayPal, but also identifying which country accepts what currency. Some airlines even have various regulations and restrictions regarding any payments made through PayPal. The option of buying tickets or booking flights through PayPal may only be exclusive to certain residents of specific countries. This translates to PayPal payments that are limited to a country or airline’s set of available currencies.

Being aware of your company’s policy is also important to consider as it can sometimes charge you additional fees for PayPal Credit as payment for flights. The option of deferring payments for up to 6 months, is available to American Citizens.

Which airlines accept payment through PayPal in different countries? Many major airlines in Europe and the US are allowing payments through PayPal along with the Middle-Eastern and Asian Airlines are slowly but surely expanding PayPal services for flights. In accordance with this, most travel agencies and flight booking sites offer PayPal as a mode of payment.

Although PayPal is well recognized in many countries, not every airline will accept PayPal as a mode of payment. Due to this, it is essential to identify in advance which airlines don’t accept PayPal before any booking process. Airlines that do not offer PayPal services can have the same flights bought through travel sites.

Some airlines may not accept PayPal at the checkout when buying a flight. A possible solution to this is by finding a third-party travel booking website that will accept PayPal. Here are a few travel agency websites that offer PayPal services:

  • Booking.com
  • Expedia.com
  • HotWire.com

Deciding to travel with PayPal can be quite convenient and smooth if you understand the guidelines of the airlines you plan to travel with. Knowing which airlines accept PayPal for payment will ensure avoiding any issues regarding flight bookings and plane flights. Finding an airline that accepts PayPal should be relatively easy considering how widely ve rsatile PayPal Credit can be. Even when an airline states that they do not accept PayPal, there is typically a possible way around this by using third-party sites that can buy the same flight through PayPal. Regardless, PayPal remains to be a reliable and secure way of paying for flights without needing to dig up a credit card and continues to be increasingly accepted as a payment by many airlines.

A guide to using buy now, pay later for travel

PayPal Editorial Staff

January 5, 2024

Planning a vacation? Buy now, pay later (BNPL) may be offered as a payment option when booking flights, hotels, or other travel accommodations.

Discover how BNPL options work for travel, from potential pros and cons to responsible practices and strategies if considering using it.

What is buy now, pay later for travel?

Buy now, pay later is an installment option that allows people to split up purchases into several smaller payments over weeks or months. It can typically be used for several types of purchases, from big-ticket items like electronics and furniture to travel expenses like hotels and airfares.

If BNPL is an available payment option for an airline, hotel, or travel retailer, individuals can opt for a payment plan at checkout. Normally, they would select the BNPL provider and apply in the checkout, but some providers may redirect applicants to their website to create an account and apply. Typically, applicants receive a near-instant decision, which may mean those looking to use buy now, pay later for travel can book their travel or vacation without a significant delay.

Depending on the BNPL provider , there may be interest fees and other charges, though some providers may offer plans with no interest. Be sure to review any terms before applying.

While application and approval requirements may vary depending on provider, here’s a breakdown of the general eligibility requirements and approval process:

  • Meet the eligibility requirements:  These can vary based on the provider. People typically need to be at least 18 years old and provide personal details like their social security number and home address. Some BNPL providers may also assess income, payment history, and credit score.
  • Agree to the terms:  Individuals must agree to the terms and conditions of a BNPL plan, including an installment schedule and any associated fees or interest charges.
  • Receive a decision and book travel:  People usually receive a BNPL approval decision in seconds. If approved, they can book their travel using BNPL as their payment method.

Potential benefits of using buy now, pay later for travel

Before using buy now, pay later for a trip, consider the potential advantages:

  • Flexibility:  BNPL may offer flexibility to spread the cost of a trip over time, allowing travelers to manage their budget and avoid a significant upfront expense.
  • Interest-free options:  Some BNPL services may provide interest-free payment plans. For example, PayPal’s Pay in 4 allows people to split eligible purchases into four interest-free, bi-weekly installments. 1
  • Accessibility:  Buy now, pay later may help make travel accessible to those with limited credit histories or low credit scores.

Potential downsides of using buy now, pay later for travel

There are some potential disadvantages to using buy now, pay later for travel expenses. Some examples include:

  • Interest and fees:  Some BNPL providers may charge interest or fees if travelers miss payments or choose longer repayment terms, potentially increasing the overall cost of their trip.
  • Overspending: While BNPL offers flexibility, it can also lead to overspending if travelers don't carefully budget for their installment payments. It also may tempt some to book more expensive trips than they can comfortably afford.
  • Credit impact: Although certain buy now, pay later providers may not conduct hard credit checks initially, missed payments or defaults may negatively impact credit scores in the long run.
  • Limited booking options:  Not all travel providers or agencies accept BNPL as a payment option.

Using buy now, pay later for travel responsibly

Here are some factors to consider when signing up for a BNPL plan for travel:

  • Budget and plan:  Establish a personal budget  for travel plans that includes not only the upfront trip cost but also the future installment payments to ensure the overall expense remains manageable and within budget.
  • Read the fine print:  Carefully read and understand the terms and conditions. Pay close attention to any interest rates, fees for missed payments, and the total cost of a trip when opting for BNPL.
  • Responsible spending:  Avoid the temptation to overspend just because BNPL offers flexibility. It’s important to only buy on credit responsibly .
  • Ensure timely payments : Commit to making payments on schedule to avoid late fees or interest charges. Setting up automatic payments  can help prevent missed deadlines.

Using BNPL for travel may offer convenience and flexibility for those looking to travel or book a vacation, but it should be done with careful consideration. Be sure to consider any fees or interest that may apply and keep track of when payments need to be made.
