I'm David Leiter , the guy behind this website. I'm an American who's been traveling the world full time for 8 years now.

I started this travel blog in 2019 to document my own international trips, share my photos, and help others learn how to travel the world and find some really good spots off the beaten path.

I'm currently based in Bali , Indonesia , where I met my wife Intan, who’s a Bali local. Now she joins me on these wild and crazy adventures too.

Together, we've done some bucket list hikes , climbed active volcanoes , seen exotic wildlife , and visited some spectacular castles , temples , and monuments around the world.

I've worked with and been featured by BBC Travel , NBC News , Time , and other companies.

I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list. I hope this world travel blog can help and inspire you in your own journeys as well!

Everything from his website’s design to his personal writing voice makes for an engaging reading experience. Not to mention that the name “Nomadic Matt” really sticks with me. 

Matthew Kepnes, AKA Nomadic Matt, was once a cubicle worker who admittedly wasn’t always a big traveler. On his first trip back in 2004, he went to Costa Rica where his perspective in life transformed forever. 

A single trip — that’s how easy it is to fall in love with travel.

Kiersten spent three, eye-opening months in multiple countries to re-envision the idea of “ success .” She succeeded in her goal and is now one of the most accomplished travel bloggers on the web. 

The Blonde Abroad covers a range of topics from travel photography to foreign cuisine. All of which draws wisdom from Kiersten’s personal travel experiences.

Nadine’s goal is simple: share her travel experiences with the world and help others do the same.

What interested me the most about Aileen is her blogging background. At age 21, she quit her corporate job, which only paid $300 a month, to become a professional traveler. 

Since then, she’s been on a streak of smashing goals and breaking barriers. Thanks to her commitment to quality content, she’s recognized as one of the top bloggers in Asia.

14. Wandering Earl

Here’s a fun trivia about  Wandering Earl . 

Unlike most bloggers who use their first names, the “Earl” in “Wandering Earl” is actually a middle name. Blog owner Derek Earl Baron only thought that “Wandering Derek” didn’t sound as catchy.

Derek is a one-of-a-kind, adventurous soul who discovered his purpose as a modern nomad relatively early into adulthood. After graduating in 1999, he planned a three-month vacation across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. 

That three-month vacation continues to this very day.

In his time as a geography student, he explored Europe with his trusty Interrail pass. He set his passion aside to focus on his career, which he eventually gave up to become a travel writer. 

Today, he blogs about railway systems over different continents. He’s also an accomplished author of three books: “The Railway to Heaven,” “A Bridge Even Further,” and “Trans-Siberian Adventures.”

18. The Opposite Travellers

Bucket List Journey talks about bucket list-worthy destinations, motivation, money, and travel tips. Annette also imparts knowledge on people who also struggle with facing fear and making braver life decisions.

When I first visited  Migrationology , I wasn’t sure whether to classify it as a food or travel blog. 

Then I checked out Mark Wiens’s “About” page. There, I learned that he viewed food as a way to connect with people in various cultures. 

And to be exposed to these cultures, Mark dedicates his time, money, and efforts to travel.

I’m not going to delve too deeply into this technical feat. What I’m going to focus on, however, is the brilliant team behind The Adventurists. 

The site is founded by “Chief Idiot” — Tom Morgan. Apparently, most of the crazy ideas featured on the blog were his. 

Every page on the site reflects Morgan and his team’s wackiness and passion for great adventures. They do, host, and document daring outdoor activities on air, land, and sea — plus, a whole lot of charity.

Their audience can also participate in these activities, which can be held in various parts of the globe. The “Monkey Run,” for example, is an event where participants race through dirt trails on tiny bikes.

The bottom line is, it’s hard to come up with unique ideas that set you apart in the blogging landscape. The Adventurists, on the other hand, managed to do so multiple times.

In 2008, the day after his 24th birthday, Ryan headed to Dublin, Ireland for his first solo backpacking trip through Europe. The three-month experience was life changing, and in 2010, Ryan quit his job. He then set off on a trip around the world that was supposed to last six months to a year. His passion for the sun, the sea and adventure wouldn't let him stop there, and he's been on the road for seven years.

Now he's a digital influencer and travel blogger who has spent the last three years in Playa del Carmen, sometimes visiting Greece during the hot summer months. Hello! I’m Shivya Nath. In 2011, at age 23, I quit my corporate job with a dream of travelling the globe. Two years later, I packed up my life into a backpack and decided to hit the road indefinitely. I travel slow, seek offbeat and local experiences, stay in a place for a few months or as long as it inspires me, and move on.

I’ve done a solo land journey from Thailand to India via Myanmar, and travelled overland from the Persian Gulf via Iran to Armenia. Travel is like an addiction and you can never have enough of it. With every travel, you grow as an individual. My only advice would be to travel with an explorer’s open mind and be adaptable. The humbler and grounded you become, the more love you get in return. Also, travel for the love of travel not just for the GRAM.

4. Ajay Sood

A travel photographer by profession and passion, Ajay Sood is one of the top Indian travel bloggers of India. His Instagram feed is an array of incredible landscapes, people, streets, and architecture. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that he has covered most of the continents during his travel.

I was 9 years old and my parents had to visit my grandparents’ place in Phagwara, which is a town 35km from my hometown, Ludhiana. My grandma was a brilliant cook. So, visiting her was always a treat. I insisted I’ll also come to Phagwara after school gets over. So, I travelled alone as a 9-year old. And, ever since, got hooked on travel.

That destination had remained on my bucket list for decades. It was only in late November 2017, when I finally visited Iceland. The place has all the magic I had expected. It has some of the largest glaciers in Europe you can snowmobile for miles on, craziest eerie ice caves that you can sing in, sprawling natural Jacuzzis (thermal baths) for sipping a chilled beer in arctic winters, Northern lights that remind you of a discotheque, caves filled with centuries-old lava, stunning landscape you can’t get enough of, gigantic waterfalls that inspire awe, and… and a large number of ‘Game of Thrones’ locations.

About ten klicks southwest lies the legendary Greenock Swamp Wetland Complex - apparently Southern Ontario's single largest forested wetland spaning 20,000 acres!

AI Time Travel: Reimagining Ancient Landscapes

You are looking at a field of fluffy, golden grass dotted with yellow flowers. There are trees in the background and mountains beyond that. Where are you?

Now you’re facing a terracotta sarcophagus. Where are you? When are you?

A new exhibit in the Rubenstein Arts Center uses AI to bring viewers into ancient Roman and Etruscan landscapes spanning 1300 years, from about 1000 BCE to 300 CE. (The field is Roman, the sarcophagus Etruscan.)

Along one wall, screens show springtime landscapes representing ancient Rome. The written prompts AI used to create each image include detailed information on plant species found in each landscape. One titled “Sedges in shallow water of an ephemeral pond” mentions “sparse trees of alder (Alnus glutinosa), white willow (Salix alba), and white poplar (Populus alba), and few herbaceous plants.” You can view examples of the written prompts on the exhibit’s website, AI Landscapes – Rethinking the Past .

Historians know what plants were likely to be in these landscapes because of evidence from preserved pollen grains. Different species have distinct pollen shapes, which makes it possible to identify plants even centuries or millennia later.

An interactive display near the front of the room has a camera pointed at props like building models, pillars, toy horses, and pieces of styrofoam. An AI model reinterprets the camera’s images to create hypothetical scenes from ancient Rome. “See how the columns get reinterpreted as statues?” says Felipe Infante de Castro, who helped program the AI. The AI attempts to add detail and backgrounds to simple props to create realistic scenes. “The only thing that we’re forcing,” he  says, “are essentially shapes—which it may or may not respect.” It may reinterpret a hand as a horse’s head, for instance, or a strangely shaped building.

The model is more precise with plants than buildings, says Augustus Wendell, Assistant Professor of the Practice in Art, Art History and Visual Studies and one of the exhibit designers. Latin names for plants are widely used in modern taxonomy, and the AI is likely to have encountered more plants in its training than ancient Roman architecture styles. The AI is a “generic model” asked to “draw on its presuppositions” about Roman buildings, says Felipe. It “wasn’t trained on specifically Roman landscapes…. It just tries its best to interpret it as such.” The results aren’t always completely authentic. “In the background,” Wendell says, “the city is often quite modern Tuscan, not at all ancient Roman.”

“We can use an AI,” Felipe says, “to give us a representation of the past that is compatible with what we believe the past should look like.”

In another part of the exhibit, you can use an AI chatbot to talk to Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar. Caitlin Childers, who helped design the exhibit, explains that the chatbot was trained on Pliny the Elder’s 37 books on natural history. When I asked Pliny what the chatbot was designed for, he told me, “I do not have the ability to access external articles or specific information beyond the knowledge I possess as Pliny the Elder up to the year 79 AD.”

He can give you information on plants and their uses in ancient Rome, but when I asked Pliny what his favorite plant was, he couldn’t decide. “I find it challenging to select a favorite plant among the vast array of flora that the Earth provides. Each plant contributes uniquely to the balance and beauty of nature.” According to Professor Maurizio Forte, “This AI chatbot can speak in English, French, Italian and also in Latin! So it is possible to formulate questions in Latin and requiring a response in Latin or ask a question in English and expect a reply in Latin as well.”

A virtual reality headset lets you see a three-dimensional model of an Etruscan sarcophagus. The real sarcophagus is encased in glass in the Villa Giulia Museum in Rome, but the virtual reality experience puts it right in front of you. The experimental VR-AI installation also allows viewers to ask questions to the sarcophagus out loud. The sarcophagus has a statue of a man and woman, but historians don’t know whose ashes are buried inside. “It’s not important how they look,” says Forte. “It’s important how they want to be.”

The sarcophagus would have been a “symbolic, aristocratic way to show power,” Forte explains. The design of the sarcophagus represents an intentional choice about how its owners wanted the world to see them after their death. “This is eternity,” Forte says. “This is forever.”

The exhibit, called “Rethinking the Past,” is on display at the Rubenstein Arts Center until May 24.

What’s New for 2024 at the Padres’ Petco Park 

The San Diego Padres are celebrating the 20 th anniversary of Petco Park in 2024 — and doing it in a big way, with the exciting expansion and transformation of the ballpark’s popular Gallagher Square plus a host of other new amenities.

All this action comes amid continuing praise for the Downtown ballpark: Petco Park has been deemed the best MLB park in America by USA Today, and average home attendance ranks second out of 30 major-league teams. 

Here’s a rundown of all the great new things to look for at the ballpark in 2024: 

Petco Park’s Gallagher Square Enhancements 

• An expanded kids’ playground and play area, designed to accommodate a wider range of ages and abilities. The centerpiece is a soaring, 35-foot-tall baseball bat made of steel and wood. 
• A fenced, off-leash dog park, in partnership with Petco, the ballpark’s namesake. 
• An improved Play Ball Field, the mini-baseball field for kids. 
• Newly installed pickleball courts. 
• The Tony Gwynn Terrace viewing deck and picnic space. 
• A general reconfiguration of Gallagher Square to keep portions of the park open for public use more frequently. 

Improved Petco Park Gameday and Events Experience 

• Gallagher Square’s statue of the beloved “Mr. Padre,” the late Tony Gwynn, has been elevated and surrounded by an expanded viewing deck, and the area serves as a picnic space during public hours. 
• The Tony Gwynn Terrace, home to the statue, has picnic tables for additional seating, along with a Tony Gwynn Deck Tower that houses a new food and beverage space and videoboard. In the Tony Gwynn Tunnel beneath the space, fans can see and hear all about the amazing life and career of Mr. Padre. An additional Padres retail and food/beverage space has been installed on the ground level next to the tunnel. 
• The project brings a new and expanded fan entry gate (the Balboa Gate) to Ninth Avenue and J Street for improved flow and shorter wait times, along with leveled and tiered lawn seating in Gallagher Square, where tickets are more affordable than other fixed seating areas within the ballpark. 

Gallagher Square in HD 

A new, state-of-the-art videoboard at the Sycuan Stage spans the entire back of the “batter’s eye.” The board measures 73 feet wide by 21 feet tall and uses 6mm of HD product by Daktronics, with amazing resolution and unmatched clarity. The new videoboard can include the scoreboard lineup and player statistics for the first time. Two additional videoboards measuring 16 feet by 9 feet have been installed so fans can keep up with game action while enjoying Gallagher Square. 

Planet-friendly Design Elements 

The renovation has created a more sustainable space by incorporating: 

• Turf to replace some of the grass, enhancing the overall aesthetic and significantly reducing water and resodding needs while maintaining grass on a large portion of picnic hill. 
• Native trees and vegetation planted throughout. 

Cutwater Agave Club 

Located down the left-field line on the Terrace level, the Cutwater Agave Club is Petco Park’s newest premium seating area. This private space and multimillion-dollar project features luxury finishes, access to food and beverages, private restrooms and a variety of seating configurations. 

The club, whose namesake is the hugely popular San Diego company Cutwater Spirits , is in a space formerly occupied by The Still. Seats in the Cutwater Agave Club sections are limited to Platinum Padres Membership holders, but those who aren’t members can still order drinks at a new walk-up bar on the club’s exterior. 

Home Plates: Awesome New Food and Beverage Options 

Petco Park’s lineup of great bites and beverages gets some new additions for this 20 th anniversary season, including several vendors making their debuts in the Mercado, located on the Main Concourse behind Home Plate. They include Gelati & Peccati, part of the Buona Forchetta family of companies; An’s Gelato, the newest branch of the beloved An’s Dry Cleaning ice cream purveyors; and a second San Diego’s Finest Hot Chicken location, home to the fan- favorite “Hot Hen” chicken sandwich. 

Other newcomers elsewhere in the ballpark include Spiro’s Mediterranean Cuisine, with fresh Mediterranean food, and a new frozen drink concept created by Delaware North called the “Frozen Friar,” with flavors including Mangonada, Island Punch and Strawberry Lemonade, available with alcohol or in a kid-friendly option. 

And joining Petco Park’s Craft Beers of San Diego program are Nova Brazil Kombucha and WestBrew , which will be available at Craft Row on the Main Concourse located behind home plate. Fans can also look forward to Ballast Point ’s new limited-edition Anniversary Two-Pack, featuring the Swingin’ Friar Ale and a co-branded koozie.
