How do I decide where to go and when?

Whether you know exactly where you want to go or if you’re open for us to guide you, our travel designers will discuss numerous options with you over the phone or on a video call to help you figure out which type of trip will best suit you. Certain offers are only valid at specific camps at select times of the year.

Can I add additional destinations?

Yes, our safari experts are extremely well travelled and have stayed in hundreds of lodges and camps across Africa – some owned by Wilderness but a great many owned by other reputable companies. Thus, we can design a trip that incorporates your offer but is best suited to all your needs.

Once I have decided on a package, what happens next?

Let your Travel Designer know that you would like to go ahead and book your trip. They will talk you through paying the deposit, completing a booking form and will let you know when your balance payment is due. They’ll be in regular contact with you to reassure you of any next steps, ensuring the booking process is as seamless as possible.

Are there any hidden extra costs?

Upon enquiry, we will send you a quote that details what is included and what will be at an extra cost. This varies with every trip we design, with some elements such as drinks and all meals being included or sometimes at an extra cost. Some activities are also an extra cost, though we can include many that you may want to pre-book and pay for as part of the package. Travel insurance, including medical cover, evacuation and repatriation, is always an additional cost and essential for every person who travels with us. Tipping is also an additional cost, at your discretion, and is payable locally.

Is my safari responsible and sustainable?

As custodians of six million acres of wild, untamed land, we take sustainable tourism extremely seriously. It’s why, for the last 40 years, we’ve pioneered conservation tourism that benefits not only the wildlife, but the people who call these wild places home. It’s why our camps are built with light footprints, why we endeavour to go off-grid, why we uplift communities and support local. You’ll believe it when you see it.

Terms and Conditions

I’ve already booked my safari, are these offers applicable to me.

Unfortunately our current offers are specifically for new bookings. We appreciate your understanding in this matter as we strive to provide the best deals for all our customers. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out to your travel designer.

What dates are the offers valid for?

Each offer has its own designated validity period. These periods are clearly outlined on the respective offer pages for your convenience. It's important to note that the validity periods vary depending on the nature of the promotion and its terms. We encourage you to visit the specific offer page to find detailed information regarding its validity dates and any associated conditions.

Are the offers applicable to all camps?

Each offer is specific to select camps or itineraries and is mutually exclusive. Any deviation outside of these specific camps or itineraries will result in standard rates being quoted at the time of booking. Again, specific details of available camps are detailed on each offer page.

Booking your safari with Wilderness

From the moment you book, we are a steadfast companion, offering expert guidance and advice as you prepare for your upcoming adventure. Why should I book with Wilderness

We know this wild continent like no other; it's our home and we take great pride in showing you the very best parts of it. At Wilderness we are also exceptionally proud to make a genuine difference to the habitats, wildlife and communities we work with. To much scams…please READ!

So whenever I use this app/ Safari it get these trackers and scammers to get my location and this is making me nervous. I installed ad blocker I think it’s called and I blocked some trackers which made me feel better. Every time you search something you usually get a scam or tracker. I do not like when people track me down. I rarely use this app because of the scams and risks. I think it is an OK app in general because it’s the people making these small BAD websites. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it could use work but it is pretty much like google. I use google way more because I feel like it is much safer than safari. I could be wrong… Safari could use some work with all these BAD websites. Can you block these bad websites? I would love to block these websites cause they are scary. Also watch out for nine anime/ 9anime websites… I searched up 9anime on safari and clicked a link. It looked safe but then these inappropriate pop ups kept coming. I immediately got off. I checked my ‘ How much trackers we have prevented’ or whatever it’s called it said that it had prevented 14 trackers from getting my IP address. This was good and bad news. I’m glad that safari and google can prevent these trackers but it is bad because this is dangerous. BE CAREFUL ON SAFARI!!!

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.

Google sandbox

My wife went into google sandbox and put all my information on there under business add settings. I need all deleted and if there’s any copies sent to my email if not delete and I’m pressing charges and I’ll contact Google myself also she has taken my Apple IDs her and her new bow means boyfriend after 20 years of marriage with me. I gave her my whole life and she has done nothing but take from me. I’m heartbroken but mainly I suffer from PTSD social anxiety, agoraphobia shell shop and now I have a vascular disease in my left leg, wonder where that came from if you would please erase from my iPhone SE that was just bought. I have also another one sitting here that was just bought last year not even a year ago that is also tore up with my Apple ID locked reeving, but she retrieved one while ago. It was two hours after it said it was available. She uses Bluetooth devices to get past off of messenger to get into my phone, please fix everything and press charges with anything. My name has on it because I didn’t do it. I have two different iPhone sitting here that I can give you the serial numbers to that. I can’t even put on my phone on my app because it has been taken, plus the IMEI.

Pascal is a travel angel! Highly recommend him.
We started planning for our safari trip contacting a bunch of different travel advisors but Pascal's service truly stood out to us as the best in the industry. He took care of planning everything from start to finish for our very last minute honeymoon trip (literally a month out and during the busiest safari season). He is extremely meticulous and very responsive to our 100 questions. He shared first hand experiences at each of the different lodges, personal pictures and gave us solid recommendations within our budget. He hopped on a call with us initially to explain all the differences to us first time safari goers, and continued to be very flexible and patient with us as we couldn't decide! We are very excited for our trip and cannot thank Pascal enough for being our first interaction on our upcoming trip.

Reviews & Visitor Experiences

The staff and the rooms were great, and the food was superb. The staff did their best to please and to make sure each day had variation. The chefs and guides were superlative. We had a fantastic time. It felt like we had traveled back in time to a pleasant remnant of the British Empire. - Nakorsakov

What a great place and a great stay. Stephan and Chantelle are fantastic managers with an awesome team working at the lodge. Our guide Jason is so knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to drive with. I cannot begin to describe the fantastic room where we stayed in absolute luxury. The two Chefs Alex and Dylan - oh my word, the food these guys make is unexplainable fantastic and one has to experience this to really appreciate good taste. We fell in love with the place. We loved our stay and will recommend Jabulani to anyone who takes a good stay, good food, lots of animals and great people in the bush serious! - Wilma V

Attention to detail is incredible. I could not fault Jabulani on one thing. Elephant experience is very moving and spiritual. All staff very friendly Ruan the best of the best. Absolutely loved every minute. - Carrylvanbassen

The place, the staff, the elephants, all authentic and exciting. It was a magical, charming, calming and elevating experience. I can’t wait to bring my two daughters next time to share this corner of the Earth with me. - FPocorn

The place was amazing - extremely well run and totally welcoming. Highly recommended for anyone wanting luxury combined with lifetime trip experiences we will remember forever. Staff and Management should be congratulated for leaving no stone unturned with respect to care service and the full Safari Experience. Thanks for making this trip one we will never forget - Special mention to Ruan - Our Safari ranger and tour guide! Thank You - ADunn

Favorite place on earth! Yeap, if someone were to ask me which is my favorite place on earth, Jabulani would be the place. We discovered this gem in 2017 and have been back every year, being this our fourth visit. We have always felt the warmth and the kindness of everyone here, from the wonderful managers, Chantel and Stefan to every single staff member, who are always ready to pamper you and help you in any way. - CGriffiths

Chantal, Stefan and the team were awesome and made our stay a memorable experience. a SPECIAL thanks to Dylan, the chef, Songs our butler, and of course, Ruan, our ranger. The three of them are what made the lodge and stay a 5 star soulful experience. Ruan was absolutely amazing! The big 5 in 2 days and then some rare sightings of very special wildlife. Not to mention Jabulani and the boys. We will return soon! - DSmith

Taj Mahal & Rajasthan with Royal Stay at Castles

We used Swastik India tour for a 17 days personalize trip. In fact, we had our own driver for the entire trip and had different guides for every cities . All the hotels was included, some was great and some was ok. But overall, we really love our trip and we recommend this tour operator. Here is a summary of our liked and disliked: Liked : - Sleeping at the castle was such a great experience - Our driver couldn’t speak English really well but despite this he was really professional. We felt safe with him the entire trip. - Confortable car ( this is really important since we have in average 3-4 hours driving a day) and always clean and the car was smelling good. - we loved most of all activities but our favorite one was the train ride with the monkeys. - good food at every hotels. - really really really good communication with the tour operator before and during this trip. We even asked to change one hotel while travelling and they change it for us at no extra cost. - we took 3 stars hotels in average and they we’re good. But I would suggest to take 4 stars if water pressure and clean room is important for you. Disliked : - We didn’t like the sleeping desert experience. In fact, we slept max 3 hours since the dogs were barking all night. (Jaisalmer) - some of the guides were too pushy to buy things. Always trying to push you to buy carpets, textiles, jewelry, etc.. I understand they need money but after visiting at least 4 carpet stores we had enough. - we didn’t like the restaurant ( poor quality food) that our driver choose and stop while travelling between the cities. At one point, we felt that he was probably getting extra money for stopping to those restaurants. In general, we loved our trip and we felt really safe and taking care of with this tour operator and our driver. The reasons why we are not giving a perfect score is because of the guides. We understand that is not their fault. But, we think the tour operator should double check before booking guides that will not try to rip off the tourist . But again , we loved our trip and if I had to book another India trip i will for sure use their services again. Thanks Swastik for this amazing trip !

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel Tour

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.

Golden Triangle Tour with Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Just returned from 6 day golden triangle tour with Bharatpur bird sanctuary. We are are Mother and Daughter and what a wonderful experience we had. Our driver Rakesh was excellent, very professional and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The guides in all cities were informative and polite. The hotels were ok though we better in Agra and Bharatpur. Breakfast too. Hospitality could've been been better in the hotels. The only gripe we had about the tour was that we wouldve liked to have been told how much we were expected to pay for each monument, as there were alot!.the last one the city palace at Jaipur wanted 4000 rupees each! We declined that one, even Taj Mahal was only 1300! You would be then prepared for the costings. But overall would totally recommend 👌

For The Love of Taj & Tiger - Golden Triangle of India & Ranthambore with 3 Tiger Safaris

Loved my tour of India with MTA. From start to finish very well organised (I feel it could have been condensed into a more jam-packed tour, but that's just my preference), and ran smoothly - with a new guide at each location. Guides had good knowledge and spoke excellent English. A great way of seeing highlights on India in a short period, safely and knowledgeably, without the hassle of having to organise anything! Ideal if you're feeling nervous about travelling around India yourself. I paid extra to have Deluxe category hotels which I'm glad I did - the hotels were fab, although wifi and hot water was a bit temperamental which I guess is to be expected. Highlight for me was definitely the safari - after 2 disappointing trips we finally saw a tiger on our last safari - it was incredible. :D

Safari tour reviews.

I had multiple ongoing WhatsApp conversations with Amit in preparation for our trip…always helpful and courteous. Tour ran smoothly throughout - in particular - kids very chuffed with tiger, leopard and sloth bear sightings in Ranthambhore, Fatehpur Sikri was a surprise and the Taj Mahal definitely lived up to the hype!
It looks overall organization is organized pretty well. However there are few things that stood out. For instance, at Safari Park our group did NOT see any Tigers, cheetahs, of wild cats. Tourist guy kept insisting there are 80 Tigers total. Well we in our car Did NOT see any at All. I then went online in the hotel and Read Reviews and came across several couples Also mentioning in the review they Did NOT see any Tigers even though they went twice in 1 day to Tiger Safari morning and then again in the evening, NO TIGERS. Tourist guy kept showing pictures of Tigers that were taken 15-20 years ago. Not Sure What to Say??!!!
Loved this tour. Excellent guides and wonderful hotels. We highly recommend this tour.

The Conscious Traveller: Kenya on a budget, through the eyes of locals

safari com offers

Chuan Kou-cheng

NAIROBI – “We decided to rob this man at this spot. We didn’t know he was a diplomat. The police got me. I went to prison.”

These are the sobering words of our guide, a former gang member in Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital.

Today, the situation is a bit happier, which I learn from a social enterprise called Nai-Nami ( nai-nami.com , walking tours from US$45 or S$61).

Marketed as a storytelling tour, Nai-Nami guides lead guests through Nairobi’s notorious downtown, an area with an infamous reputation for violent street crime. Yet, I feel safe during the 2½-hour tour as our group of four explores bus stations and markets, culminating in a meal at a local restaurant.

At times, I wonder if I am being voyeuristic or exploitative as I listen to our guide’s tales of extreme poverty. For instance, he tells us how he began a career as a pickpocket at age nine after his father died and his mother became an alcoholic.

But I take comfort in the fact that proceeds from the tour go to our guides, some of whom grew up on the streets and are former criminals. Today, they lead tours, act as positive role models for the younger members of their community and earn a regular income from the work.

This is a theme that I constantly go back to on a solo two-week trip to Kenya in November 2023. How can I, a privileged tourist, travel as ethically as possible while still working within a reasonable budget?

As much as I enjoy travel, I have always been uncomfortable with the inequality between tourists and locals, especially since many of my trips have been in the developing world. So, I try to make responsible decisions when travelling, such as considering my impact on the environment and community, without being parochial.

The concept of ethical travel is not new. In 1999, the United Nations set out a framework known as the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, recognising travel as a driver of solidarity and development, and outlining guiding principles across the economic, cultural, social and environmental aspects of tourism.

More recently, a 2024 study by Booking.com shows that three-quarters of respondents want to travel more sustainably over the next 12 months, citing concerns about the impact of tourism on climate change.

In Kenya, making ethical travel decisions such as booking locally run accommodation and tours help me enjoy the trip more as it enables a deeper connection with the place and its people. Here is how I went about it.

1. Do research

Like many travellers, I rely heavily on Google reviews to ascertain the quality of accommodation and activities.

Using keywords such as “ethical” and “sustainable” helps to shortlist places that minimise negative impacts of tourism, such as the exploitation of local communities and overcrowding of delicate ecosystems at wildlife parks.

I glean useful, up-to-date pre-travel advice from talking to locals and other travellers on forums such as Reddit (from local subreddits like r/kenya to more general travel-related communities like r/trave l), as well as Facebook groups such as Backpacking Africa.

In fact, it is on the latter that I find Oseki Maasai Mara Camp ( osekimaasaimaracamp.com ), a safari lodge that consists of clean safari tents equipped with comfortable bedding, generator-powered electricity and hot running water.

Accommodation options in the Mara range from campsites where you pitch your own tent to luxury options that cost four figures a night. With full-board room rates starting at US$72, I find Oseki’s no-frills-yet-comfortable approach refreshing.

safari com offers

Apart from its Dutch co-owner, the camp’s staff are all local Maasai, an ethnic group that inhabits Kenya and Tanzania.

Staff provide services such as guiding, cooking and transport. The lodge also runs and contributes to community initiatives, such as helping to rebuild a children’s dormitory in a local village that was destroyed in a fire.

2. Get local advice on the ground

In Kenya, I find locals eager to share more about their country. As English is widely spoken, it is easy to strike up conversations with Uber drivers, shopkeepers and tour guides.

At Cheche Books ( instagram.com/chechebooks ) in Nairobi’s Lavington suburb, I tell the affable owner I am heading to Kenya’s coast after my safari.

safari com offers

She recommends The House Of Rust (2021) by Khadija Abdalla Bajaber, set in the region I am about to visit. Reading Bajaber’s beautiful tale of a young girl’s search for her fisherman father makes me appreciate the sights even more.

She also points me towards Connect Coffee Roasters (connectcoffee.net), a hip coffee joint that would not look out of place in central Melbourne, Australia. The fruity signature Juliet blend latte is a bargain at KES320 (S$3.20) and is so refreshing, I buy some beans to take home.

Nairobi has a fledgling backpacker scene, and I stay at two new hostels that opened in 2023.

Nairobi Backpackers’ Hostel ( hostelworld.com/st/hostels/p/321173/nairobi-backpackers-hostel , dorms from $17) and Mad Vervet Nairobi Backpackers Hostel ( mad-vervet-backpackers-hostel-nairobi.nairobi-hotels-ke.com, dorms from $19) both have lively social areas to meet other travellers.

The young, hip staff are happy to dish out travel advice, arrange tours and suggest restaurants.

3. Travel in shoulder season

safari com offers

Visiting the Maasai Mara National Reserve and spotting animals in the wild is a bucket-list experience for many. In particular, the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti National Park in neighbouring Tanzania attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors between June and September every year.

Unfortunately, this has resulted in overtourism. Stories abound of convoys of safari trucks camped side by side on the banks of the Mara River within the National Reserve, with desperate tourists jostling for the perfect shot of the wildebeest crossing the river.

safari com offers

One solution to this is to travel in low or shoulder seasons.

I go in December, during shoulder season, and find wildlife-spotting opportunities abundant but with much smaller crowds. In Kenya, shoulder season runs from October to mid-December.

On my one-day safari tour, organised by Oseki Maasai Mara Camp, I see a variety of animals – including zebras, giraffes, elephants and lions – with far fewer safari vehicles crowding around the wildlife.

The guide and vehicle cost US$175, and the reserve fee of US$100 a person is half of what it would cost during high season. My driver also makes it a point not to drive too close to the wildlife, ensuring the animals remain undisturbed.

My flight to Kenya on Air India takes 15 hours, including a two-hour stop in Delhi. The round-trip flight costs around $1,150.

4. Take public transport

Take advantage of Kenya’s extensive public transport network to get around the country.

safari com offers

Between towns, the cheapest option is by brightly painted local minibuses called matatu. However, while I hear positive reports about these from other travellers, I cannot steel myself to ride them as they have a reputation for dangerous driving and overcrowding.

Instead, I opt for inter-city coach services. EasyCoach ( easycoachkenya.com ), a local bus company, takes me from Nairobi to the lakeside town of Naivasha for KES1,050 each way. The coaches offer reserved seating and ample baggage space.

However, they run behind schedule by about 90 minutes on each trip, so build in some flexibility in your travel itinerary to account for delays.

The only public transport between Naivasha and the Maasai Mara is via matatu. I opt for a private driver instead, which sets me back about $110 in total for the 3½-hour journey in an air-conditioned car. This fare is for the whole vehicle, so a couple or group could split the costs fairly easily. To book, send a WhatsApp message to Safiri Cabs at +254-728-409427.

Uber is available in many Kenyan cities and is a safe and cost-effective way of getting around Nairobi. A 10-minute ride costs about KES180, although tips for good service are always welcome.

5. Go beyond safaris

safari com offers

While the game-viewing in Kenya’s national parks and reserves is the country’s biggest attraction, safari fatigue is real.

Luckily, there is a lot more to Kenya than just animals. Apart from Nairobi’s bustling social and restaurant scenes, the country also has some excellent beaches in its coastal region.

In fact, one of the highlights of my trip is my visit to Lamu, an archipelago set in the Indian Ocean. I take a domestic flight on Safarilink from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, which costs US$58 for the 70-minute flight.

safari com offers

The main town of Lamu is officially car-free, with its denizens getting by on foot or via donkey. I love walking down its labyrinthine alleys and viewing the town’s amazing architecture, which bears the hallmarks of the archipelago’s Swahili, Indian and Arabic heritage.

safari com offers

6. Use M-Pesa

One thing that surprises me during my Kenya trip is the proliferation of M-Pesa, a mobile payment system ubiquitous throughout the country.

safari com offers

M-Pesa can be used to pay for everything – from transport to restaurant bills to even entry at public toilets. Accommodation providers also tell me they prefer payment in M-Pesa as fees and charges are lower than when paying by credit card.

It is remarkably easy to set up. I visit an outlet of local telco Safaricom, procure a SIM card and then register for M-Pesa. I am given a four-digit pin and, within minutes, am able to use the pin to send and receive money.

M-Pesa does not require a bank account and is instead topped up via a human agent. I use online remittance service Remitly ( remitly.com ), which allows me to transfer money from my multi-currency Revolut card to my M-Pesa account.

While this negates the need to carry cash, my M-Pesa service gets suspended after a particularly large top-up of about 52,000 KES to pay the safari lodge. A quick call to Safaricom puts things right, but as with anywhere in the world, a small stash of emergency currency is helpful to have in situations like this.

This Botswana safari offers these things others in Africa don’t

Home to some of the best animal-spotting sites in the world, Justine Gosling finds safari in Botswana is a slice of paradise

His name was George. He made my heart flutter and I stared at him with feelings that were strangely overwhelming for a first meeting. Sadly, my interest wasn’t reciprocated. Completely ignoring me and with his back turned, George, camp Duma Tau’s resident 1,500kg Hippo, wallowed in the delta’s shallow water just meters from the platoon I was standing on.

George was the first animal I saw on my multi-camp, luxury @ wearewilderness safari in Botswana, and my feelings of surprise and awe just minutes after our arrival set the tone for the rest of our safari. Situated in the Linyanti private concession, Duma Tau – meaning ‘roar of lion’ in Setswana – was my first camp, and by the end of my first day, I understood how it got its name.

Soon after our arrival, still dizzy from meeting George, I headed out on my first drive with my guide, ‘Taps.’ He told me a little of what to expect, and the benefits of being in a private concession. Firstly, only one safari company operates in the area, so I could expect to have the area to myself and could forget the horror stories of 30 trucks gawping at a single lion. Secondly, I didn’t have to stick to a circuit track, as safari’s often do, I could go off road to track the wildlife. I’d been out a couple of hours when Tap’s spotted antelope fleeing across the river, followed by a female lion. He shifted gear and told me to ‘hold on’. With this, he spun the truck around and sped along the track through the thick bush parallel to the river, to hastily reach a safe crossing point to track the lioness, who he thought might be heading back to her cubs.

Roaring with laughter at the thrill of the cross-country chase, the truck leapt out of the bush and suddenly all was calm as it entered the water, seemingly swimming through. That was surprise number one: safaris are as much about the enjoyment of off-road driving as they are about the wildlife. I loved the borderline reckless driving through terrain that would destroy your average car.

THE LION’S ROAR

We caught up with the lazing lioness on the riverbank; she didn’t acknowledge our presence, even as we pulled up mere meters away. Every hair on my body stood on end as she called her mate using her whole body to make the deep, dry rumble. Still holding my breath, I watched the grass a meter from her face blow away as the call left her mouth. That was surprise number two: I never expected to get so close to an apex predator. As the sun began to set in an explosion of pink, I parked up and took a moment to appreciate the last moments of the day, a sort of unexpected meditation.

I was silent, but all around I could hear baboons yelp, frogs croak, birds twitter and the distant trumpet of an elephant. These meditative moments were frequent, when no words could adequately describe what I was seeing or feeling. I simply sat in silence in awe of the surrounds, grateful to be here. Back at camp I sat around the floating fire pit with a gin and tonic listening to the chorus.

I tried to estimate the number of animals in some of the huge wildebeest, zebra and elephant herd. They easily numbered into the hundreds and had surrounded me

I didn’t sleep much that first night and excitedly leapt out of bed at 5am for more. After recovering from being trumpeted at by a passing elephant that left me gasping, I took coffee standing by a pool occupied by 30-odd hippos, the world’s most deadly land mammal. Even the helicopter transfer flight to our next camp, Vumbura plains, was a safari experience, with huge herds of elephants and giraffe spotted meandering in the tributaries of the Okavango delta. The family of warthogs loitering under the open walled toilet hut even made the comfort break memorable.

All the camp buildings are open-walled to make the most of the views, except for a safety mesh to keep out the bugs in the villas (another surprise was the lack of annoying insects). My huge room had double bathroom sinks, a sunken lounge and outside shower.

IN PURSUIT OF WILD DOGS

A trip highlight was a high-speed hunt of the critically endangered African dogs. Despite watching a pack of them ferociously devour a helpless Impala – hearing every bone crunch – they managed to look cute throughout the ordeal, with their happy ‘yelps,’ wagging tails, saucepan sized ears and patchwork coats of red, brown, black and white. The butchery did not put me off my surprise BBQ lunch, set up by staff in the shade of a kharari apple leaf tree. My last camp, Qorokwe, which borders the Moremi Game Reserve, was all about the mega herds.

Read more: This Norfolk safari is hands down the county’s best attraction

In the natural pool back at the lodge, I tried to estimate the number of animals in some of the huge wildebeest, zebra and elephant herd. They easily numbered in the hundreds and had surrounded me in another moment of awe. Just like the pack of snoozing cheetah I had spent time with, an afternoon nap became my routine too, with the early starts and nighttime hippo raves outside the room necessitating a midday recharge. Another surprise – don’t expect to sleep much on safari!

The excitement continued right until the end of the trip. I had to clear the runway of a pair of wayward giraffes, two ostrich and an antelope so that the plane could safely land to fly us back to Maun. I never expected to laugh so much, to feel such peace, to experience so many moments of awe, surprise and trepidation. Perhaps there shouldn’t have been any surprises, though: after all, this is nature at is most wild, made all the more magical by the exceptional hospitality delivered by the wilderness staff.

Prices at Wilderness Vumbura Plains at start from $1,850 per person, for two people sharing; at Wilderness Qorokwe from $1,480 per person for two people sharing and at Wilderness DumaTau from $1,750 per person, based on two people sharing .

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The outstretched arm of our tracker gestures towards some treetops a few hundred yards away: his ability to spot the seemingly invisible is astounding. Luke, our guide, cuts the engine of the Land Cruiser and turns around: “Can you see? Just through that clearing to the left.”

Following his direction through my binoculars, I pick out the majestic-looking bird: dark brown head with tufted crown, white breast and piercing yellow eyes. Luke fills me in: “Sometimes nicknamed the ‘leopard of the air’, it’s a martial eagle, with a wingspan of up to 2.5m, one of the world’s largest birds of prey, and the largest in Africa.” This apex predator remains on its perch for a precious few minutes, then suddenly takes flight and disappears into the distance.

A pair of little bee-eaters

I’ve come to andBeyond’s Phinda Mountain Lodge in eastern South Africa on a birdwatching safari. The lodge sits in an elevated position with views across Phinda Private Game Reserve ’s 73,800 acres; its seven ecosystems offer an unusually varied habitat, from lush greenery to open savannah. The foothills of the low‑lying Lebombo mountains stretch 500 miles north into Mozambique, and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean lie just 20 miles east.

Most guests are here for the big game, but an impressive 436 bird species also makes the reserve a popular birding destination, so andBeyond’s specialist itinerary allows me to indulge a lifelong hobby.

Two great egrets and a grey heron perch in a tree above the Mvubu dam

Much of our first morning is hijacked by my enthusiasm to identify every bird we see, which means we get no further than 200 yards from the lodge in the first hour. But in the afternoon, we head directly to the dry sand forest, which is home to unusual endemic species.

A bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch

Surrounded by an elephant exclusion fence, we leave the vehicle and set out on foot – as strict protocol dictates, our guide leads from the front with a high-calibre rifle in hand. Orchids and lichen grow in profusion, and some of the Lebombo wattle trees are believed to date back over 1,000 years. The dense vegetation makes getting a good view of the birds more challenging, but we still spot plenty, including African green pigeons, the paradise flycatcher with its unmistakably long tail feathers, and the crested barbet. Then we’re treated to the endemic pink-throated twinspot, a distinctive waxbill with a bright head and black chest with white spots. Extant in just a handful of other locations nearby, this is a favourite for many visiting birders.

The author uses the Swarovski Optik AX Visio binoculars with a Zulu tracker

My bird knowledge – largely limited to the British Isles – is of little help here in South Africa, so my guide has been invaluable. However, I’ve also been given access to the world’s first AI-supported binoculars, released this year, which enable me to make positive IDs myself. The Swarovski Optik AX Visio (£3,820) combines high-end optics (10x32) with bird identification software. You get the desired bird in your sights, and at the press of a button a suggested species appears on the heads-up display. Behind the scenes, the binoculars are cross-checking the image and GPS coordinates against Merlin Bird ID’s extensive database of more than 8,000 bird species (Merlin’s app is divided up into groups, allowing you to download extra information on the species found in a given region; I installed the South Africa pack of 712 birds.)

A gulp of reed cormorants, egrets and African darters roost above the waters of the Mvubu dam

Making our way in the vehicle once again, we come across zebra with red-billed oxpeckers picking ticks and parasites from their backs. A little further on, we glimpse a southern fiscal; a black-and-white shrike that also goes by the name of butcher bird due to its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns for later consumption. Then, as we pass a small water source, a bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch; it’s a malachite kingfisher. Meanwhile, a three-banded plover moves busily along the water’s edge, foraging for insects. Luke then spots its nest, which is little more than a shallow depression on the beach containing two small grey mottled eggs.

The author in the rare sand forest – in front of a centuries-old Lebombo wattle tree

Over the course of three days, the binoculars help me correctly identify 68 species of bird. Although there are a few, around 30, with which the technology struggled. Sometimes the bird is too far away, or it is obscured by twigs, or the image was blurred – but more often than not, with a good, clear view, the binoculars do an impressive job of identification. Moreover, because a photo is saved with each press of the button, I have a comprehensive photographic diary for later scrutiny.

A flock of white-faced whistling ducks

On my last day, as the sun drops low on the horizon, we stop at a clearing next to the waters of the Mvubu dam, which makes a sublime setting for sundowners. A handful of blue-cheeked bee-eaters flutter above the still waters, a flock of white-faced whistling ducks complete their final flyby, and the nearby hippos quieten their grunting for the night. Biltong and drinks polished off, we hop back in the vehicle and make our way under a starry night sky. Sitting back, I reflect on my first birding safari experience – spotting more than 100 bird species, taking in the big five along the way and myriad other wildlife, it’s been as rewarding a trip as I could have hoped for.

A blue-cheeked bee-eater

Includes internal flights, dedicated safari vehicle and specialist birding guide, accommodation, laundry, meals and drinks, andbeyond.com. Guests will be able to book a pair of Swarovski Optik AX Visio binoculars from July, POA

10 amusement and water parks to visit this summer in New Jersey

3 minute read.

safari com offers

The Jersey Shore is plenty of fun with its sandy beaches, ice cream shops and rolling waves.

But we can always do with a little more excitement ... and water slides!

Local amusement and water parks offer something for everyone, from easy-going rides like bumper cars and lazy rivers to "big kid" rides like the world's tallest roller coaster and racing water slides.

Whether you're looking for family fun or chasing an adrenaline rush this summer, check out these parks.

Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach, Seaside Heights

If you grew up in New Jersey, chances are you have been to Casino Pier — it's one of the most popular boardwalks and amusement parks at the Shore.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Its iconic Jet Star rollercoaster was swept into the Atlantic Ocean during superstorm Sandy, but plenty of rides remain, like the Centrifuge, an indoor scrambler with party music, strobe lights and smoke.

There are full-size roller coasters like Hydrus, with a 72-foot drop that reaches speeds of 45 miles per hour, as well as rides for kids, including bumper cars and a carousel.

Casino Pier also is home to arcade games and Breakwater Beach waterpark, with a wave pool, lazy river, slides (some more terrifying, like the 50-foot Salem's Scream), a hot tub, children's areas and more.

Go: 800 Ocean Terrace; 732-793-6488,  casinopiernj.com .

Fantasy Island Amusement Park and Thundering Surf Waterpark, Beach Haven

Whether you're enjoying the view from the top of the Ferris wheel or shooting Skee-Ball in the arcade, this Long Beach Island spot is filled with childhood nostalgia.

Located in Beach Haven's Bay Village, which has shops, restaurants and bars, Fantasy Island has an arcade and rides for those big and small.

More: Here's the ultimate beach guide for your summer days at the Jersey Shore

Across the street, Thundering Surf Waterpark has six large slides, a lazy river, racing slides, a toddler splash area, a Flow Rider surfing simulator, and a kids splash area with a tipping bucket that dumps water on innocent bystanders (also fun for adults!).

Next to the waterpark is Settler's Mill Adventure Golf, a mini-golf course.

Go:  Fantasy Island is at 750 North Bay Ave.; 609-492-4000,  fantasyislandlbi.com . Thundering Surf and Settler's Mill Adventure Golf are at 300 Taylor Ave.; 609-492-0869,  thunderingsurfwaterpark.com .

Jenkinson's Amusement Park, Point Pleasant Beach

Being on the Jenkinson's Boardwalk is fun for parents, with iconic watering holes like Martell's Tiki Bar. But it's also a wonderland for children, thanks to beautiful beaches, an aquarium, Jenkinson's Sweet Shop and an amusement park.

Jenkinson's offers an array of rides including airplanes, bumper cars, boats, a carousel and the spinning Dizzy Dragons. Most of the attractions are aimed toward younger kids, but some of rides — the Ferris wheel, Pendolo (a spinning swinging ride), Pirate's Plunge and Starship 3000 — are fun for teens and adults, too.

Go:  500 Boardwalk;  732-295-4334 ,  jenkinsons.com .

Keansburg Amusement Park and Runaway Rapids Waterpark, Keansburg

Just steps away from the beach, boasting beautiful bay views, is Keansburg Amusement Park. The surrounding town, which has earned a name for itself with new restaurants, a boardwalk, ample fishing piers, bars and more, makes this destination fun for the whole family.

The park, which was established in 1904, has carnival-style rides like the Frog Hopper, Pharaoh's Fury (a swinging boat ride much like Fantasy Island's Sea Dragon), Moby Dick and the spinning Gravitron (don't go on a full stomach!). There are plenty of exciting rides for little kids, too, including tea cups, the Sea Serpent roller coaster, a carousel and the Log Flume.

The park's go karts are a must, and don't miss nearby Runaway Rapids with water slides, a lazy river and splash zones.

Go:  275 Beachway Ave.; 732-495-1400,  keansburgamusementpark.com .

Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor and Wild Safari, Jackson

This park attracts visitors from all over the world, considering it's home to Kingda Ka, the globe's tallest roller coaster and the fastest in North America.

Along with other coasters like Medusa and Batman, the park houses Hurricane Harbor waterpark, with water slides like the Big Wave Racer, as well as calmer attractions like Blue Lagoon and the kid-friendly Calypso Springs.

Also on the property is the drive-through Wild Safari Adventure, with animals from nearly every continent including bison, rhea and llama from America; elephants, white rhinos and Grant's zebras from Africa; and Asian wildcats like Bengal and Siberian tigers.

Go: 1 Six Flags Blvd.; 732-928-2000, sixflags.com/greatadventure
