Isra and Miraj Story Summary

The date was the 27th of Rajab in the year 721 (Sad year – ‘aam ul-huzn) when Abu Talib and Khadijah (RA) died.

About Isra and Miraj, it is being mentioned in surah al-Isra. In Isra, the first part of the night, Jibrael came to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and then he rode on the Buraq, which is larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. On buraq he traveled from Makkah (Masjid al-Haram) to Al-Aqsa Mosque in just a second, to be noted, the distance between these two destinations is 1239.42 KM and takes around 1 hour and 52 minutes if you travel by Airplane, but our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) completed it in just a few seconds.

Now, in the other part of the night, which is Miraj, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) traveled to the 7th heaven, and in each heaven, he met the following people;

  • 1st Heaven met Adam (AS)
  • 2nd Heaven met Isa (AS) and Yahya (AS)
  • 3rd Heaven met Yusuf (AS)
  • 4th Heaven met Idris (AS)
  • 6th Heaven met Haroon (AS)
  • 6th Heaven met Musa (AS)
  • 7th Heaven met Ibrahim (AS)
  • Baitul Ma’mur
  • Sidrat Al-Muntaha (Where 50 prayers were enjoined on him, then reduced to 5.)

What is Baitul Ma’mur?

It is a house, which is located in the 7th heaven, directly above the Kaaba (Allah’s house). Angels perform the tawaf of this house as we do around the Kaaba during Hajj and Umrah, the Kaaba on the earth is the replica of it. The 70,000 angels visit this house daily and say their prayers as well as it will continue until the day of Judgement. ( Sahih al-Bukhari 3207 and Sahih Muslim 164 )

What is Sidrat Al-Muntaha?

It is a Lote tree and it is the end of the 7th heaven. It is the boundary that no one ever passed except our Prophet (PBUH) and it is the place where the Prophet (PBUH) traveled along with Jibrael, where Allah cuts down 50 prayers to 5 upon the request of Muhammad (PBUH).

Isra Miraj: The Night Journey Of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

isra-miraj

Isra Miraj is one of the most notable events in the religious history of Islam, in which Isra and Miraj are two chapters of the night journey taken by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) around the year 621. Certain events that took place during Isra and Miraj are explained in brief in the Quran.

The Story of Isra and Miraj

In Isra – the first part of the night , Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) journey began when he was in the Great Mosque in Makkah where angel Jibreel and angel Mikal came to him and brought Buraq (a creature in Islamic tradition said to be a transport for certain prophets). The Prophet travelled to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Buraq within a second. Anas Ibn Malik narrates that angel Jibreel offered Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) a glass of milk and a glass of wine, setting eyes on what he would choose. The Prophet drank milk which resulted in passing the special test as he chose the drink that was healthy and pure for him rather than the one that is prohibited on earth.

al-aqsa-mosque-jerusalem

In Miraj, the second part of the Journey , Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to seven stages of heaven with the angel Jibreel. In each stage, the Prophet met and spoke to different prophets. At the first stage, he met Adam who is described as a tall and handsome man with long hair by Ibn Ishaq. In the second stage, he met Yahya (John the Baptist) and Isa (Jesus) ; after that he met Yusuf (Joseph) in the third stage who is described to be winsome like the moon. Then the Prophet met Idris (Adris) in the fourth stage, and after that Harun (Aaron) in the fifth stage who was described as the most beautiful man that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encountered. In the sixth stage, he met Musa (Moses) who is described to be distinctive from other prophets. Lastly, he met Ibrahim (Abraham) in the seventh stage who resembled Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) pointing up to be his father who was seen leaning on the lote tree known as Sidrat-Al-Muntaha.

What is Sidrat-Al-Muntaha?

Sidrat-Al-Muntaha

It is a huge Sidr tree as well as the end of the seventh heaven. According to Islamic beliefs, this is the boundary no one ever passed except Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) along with angel Jibreel. This is where Allah told Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that Muslim believers were to enrol in prayers 50 times a day. The Prophet accepted the offer but as he was going back to the earth, he met Prophet Moses who advised that 50 prayers were too much for a day. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went back to Allah and requested to reduce 50 prayers as it was too much. Allah reduced 5 prayers and made it 45 prayers a day. But according to Prophet Moses, it was still too much. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took nine trips between Moses and Almighty Allah and after that, it was finally reduced to 5 times prayers a day. Prophet Moses continued to ask for the reduction in numbers, but Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that he was too guilt-ridden. Moreover, he is grateful for 5 prayers a day.

What is Lailat al Miraj?

lailatul-miraj

Celebrated on the 27th of Rajab, Lailat-Al-Miraj is a Muslim holiday in the event of Isra and Miraj. It is also known as Mehraj-Ul-Alam and Shab-e-Miraj . Lailat-Al-Miraj meaning and history recognize it as the day when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to all the seven stages of heaven. It is believed that this was the day when an angel visited and Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) chest was opened and it was purified with Zamzam water . Later his heart was filled with sagacity and belief. The day is celebrated differently by various Muslim countries. Most Muslims do not fast on this day since the exact day is not known. Food and treats are served after Salah (prayers performed by the Muslims).

How to celebrate Lailat al Miraj?

Lailat al Miraj is the day when Muslims remember the holy night of Isra Miraj. It is marked by congregation prayers in mosques. Prayers can be performed at home as well, followed by celebration meals. Some Muslims also light candles to mark this special day. At home, elders of the family share the story of Isra and Miraj with the young to ensure that the legend as well as the tradition is passed on to the generations to come. Some people also recite night time prayers for Shab-e-Miraj. Fasting on Lailatul-Miraj is optional but not common. It is said that if someone fasts on this day, they will be safe from Qabr ka Azab, which means the azab of the grave. They will also be safe from Dozakh, or the fire of hell. Hence, Huzur Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salam recommended fasting on the two days of Shab E Meraj.

Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Spiritual Experience

Isra and Mi’raj represent a profound spiritual experience for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It consists of two parts: the night journey (Isra) and the ascension (Mi’raj).

The Isra marked the physical journey of the Prophet from Mecca to Jerusalem, highlighting his unique position as Allah’s chosen messenger.

The Mi’raj signifies the ascension through the heavens, where the Prophet met various prophets and ultimately stood in the presence of Allah.

This spiritual journey reinforced the Prophet’s mission, emphasizing the significance of his role as a bridge between humanity and the divine.

Isra Miraj Hadith

Anas ibn Malik reported: Fifty prayers were obligated upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he was taken on his night journey. Then, it was reduced until it was set at five and an announcement was made, “O Muhammad, My word is never changed, so these five prayers will be counted as fifty.”

Ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I met Abraham on the night of my Ascension and he said: O Muhammad, greet your nation with peace from me. Tell them Paradise has pure soil and delicious water, that it is a level plain and its plants grow with declarations of the glory of Allah, the praise of Allah, the oneness of Allah, and the greatness of Allah.”

Abu Huraira reported: On the night of the Ascension, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was presented with two vessels, one full of wine and the other full of milk. The Prophet looked at them both and he chose the vessel full of milk. The Angel Gabriel, upon him be peace, said, “All praise is due to Allah who has guided you to that which is natural, for had you selected the wine your nation would have been led astray.”

Malik ibn Sa’sa’ah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, told them about his Night Journey, saying, “We ascended until we reached the second heaven where Gabriel asked for the gate to be opened, but it was said: Who is it? Gabriel said: I am Gabriel. It was said: Who is with you? Gabriel said: It is Muhammad. It was said: Has he been called? Gabriel said yes. When we reached beyond the second heaven, I saw John and Jesus who are cousins. Gabriel said: These are John and Jesus, so greet them with peace. I greeted them with peace and they returned my greeting, saying: Welcome, O righteous brother and prophet.”

The Miraculous Night Journey – A Brief Story

On 27 Rajab, Muslims remember Isra’ and Miraj, the miraculous Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad. The exact date of the event is uncertain, but the majority of scholars place it at 12 to 16 months before the Hijrah.

One night, Prophet Muhammad was sleeping near the Ka’bah in Makkah, when the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) came to him, woke him up and, taking him by the arm, led him to Al-Buraq, a beast resembling a horse with two huge wings springing from its back.

From Makkah, Al-Buraq took off toward Jerusalem. There, the Prophet was met by all the other Prophets. He dismounted, tethered Al-Buraq to a ring in the gate of Jerusalem, and led them in Prayers.

Two vessels were then brought to him, one containing milk, the other wine. Muhammad drank the milk. Jibreel said:

“O Muhammad, you enjoy what is pure. Surely you will guide your people to the right path.”

" title="Advertise and Market to Muslims" target="_blank">Ads by Muslim Ad Network

This journey demonstrates God’s might and ability to make possible the impossible. The concepts of time and space as we understand them do not apply, and what applies cannot be perceived by our limited faculties.

Led by the Angel Jibreel , the Prophet began his ascent through the seven heavens , where he reached Sadrat Al-Muntaha, the remotest lote tree, symbolizing the end of worldly knowledge . He was then taken before the Divine Presence .

The Obligation of Prayer

Allah (God) enjoined the Muslims to perform Salah (ritual Prayers) 50 times a day. After his audience with Allah, Muhammad met Moses, who asked him how many Prayers were laid upon his followers.

When the Prophet replied 50, Moses told him, “the congregational Prayer is heavy and your people are weak”. He advised him to go back and ask Allah to reduce them.

Muhammad made several trips back and forth, and each time, the Merciful reduced the number till finally He reduced it to 5 Prayers a day and if they are performed properly the worshiper will be given credit for 50.

The Prophet continued his descent till he arrived back in Makkah. When he told the people what had happened to him, Muslims who were weak in faith doubted the Prophet’s report. Yet when his friend and long supporter Abu Bakr was asked to take a stand on the issue, he replied:

“If Muhammad said it happened, then it must have happened. I believed him when he first talked about his divine revelation, why should I doubt him now?”

Thus on this occasion Abu Bakr earned the title of As-Siddiq (the Veracious).

A Trial of Faith

…and We appointed the vision which We showed thee as an trial for mankind… (Quran 17:60 )

This miracle was the first serious trial for the companions’ faith when they were confronted with an issue that cannot be measured empirically. For the Prophet, after seeing Allah’s signs, his faith was established on certainty.

The trip from Makkah to Jerusalem was not chosen haphazardly. This area is known as the cradle of all religions and Muhammad’s message encompasses all the preceding ones.

This miraculous journey establishes several facts. First, the status of the Prophet Muhammad, as he was chosen to lead all the prophets in prayer, and to go where no one else, not even Jibreel, was allowed. The journey also establishes the sanctity of Jerusalem , because it is the point where the earth and sky meet and from there the Prophet ascended to heaven. Therefore, the whole of Jerusalem and not only the mosque is considered in the eyes of Muslims a sacred place to behold and cherish after Makkah and Madinah.

As in the time of the Prophet, Muslims now are facing all sorts of trials and their faith is being constantly tested.

On this blessed occasion let us recall that our faith is the only real thing; it is our life-saver in this sea of turmoil surrounding us. I am convinced that we are invincible as long as our belief in Allah and in the Message of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is intact.

Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj: The Story of the Ascension to the Skies

Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj: The Story of the Ascension to the Skies

'He [saw] certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs'.

[The Noble Qur’an, 53:18]

What is the Mi'raj?

You can read our blog post on the first half of the Prophet's miraculous night journey here.

We now turn our attention to the miraculous Ascension – Al-Mi'raj of the Prophet (saw). The word Al-Mi'raj is a noun of instrument in Arabic morphology, which literally means ‘an instrument you use to ascend’. The question is what did this divine instrument or ladder look like?

Let us mention a couple of descriptions we have for it from reliable Islamic sources:

The Prophet (saw), 'saw the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise at the left of the Rock [at the Dome of the Rock Masjid ] . He greeted them and they returned his greeting. Then he asked them something and they replied with an answer that cools the eyes. Then the Prophet (saw) was brought the ladder by which the spirits of the children of Adam (as) ascend. Creation never saw a more beautiful object. It had alternate stairs of silver and gold and came down from the Highest and Amplest Garden of Paradise, Jannat al-Firdaws. It was encrusted with pearls and surrounded with angels on its right and left'.  [The Prophet’s Night Journey and Heavenly Ascent by Sayyid Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Maliki]

The Messenger of Allah (saw) also said that, 'a ladder was brought to me finer than any I have ever seen. It was that to which the dying man looks when death approaches'. [The Life of Muhammad (saw) Ibn Ishaq]

Now let’s see what happened when the Prophet (saw) accompanied by Jibril (as) ascended into the layers of sky.

prophet muhammad miraj journey

The First Sky

Allah ascended the Prophet (saw) from the Dome of the Rock through the skies, where he not only saw many miraculous sights and numerous angels, he also met the past Prophets (as). Along the way, he (saw) was greeted with excitement and delight, as his arrival had been much-anticipated.

It is hard to imagine how he (saw) must have felt upon meeting his brothers (as), all of whom had gone through trials and difficulties, as they met him with the warmth and love his own tribe had isolated him from. He was greeted with the words, 'Welcome O pious Prophet and pious brother!' (Bukhari). (Adam (as) and Ibrahim (as), however, welcomed him as a 'pious son').

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'Then he ascended with us to the heaven [first layer of the sky and end of the known universe]. Jibril [as] then asked the (gate of heaven) to be opened (by knocking on one of its doors). [Bukhari]

It was said, "Who are you?" He said, "Jibril [as]".

It was said, "And who is with you?" He said, "Muhammad [saw]".

It was said, "Has he been sent for?" He said, "He has indeed been sent for".

And it (the door of the heaven) was opened for us and suddenly I was with (the Prophet) Adam [as]. Then he welcomed me and supplicated for good for me'. [Muslim]

(In other narrations it mentioned the angelic gatekeepers rejoiced at the arrival of the beloved Prophet (saw) and proclaimed, 'Welcome unto him! What an amazing arrival has come!'  [Muslim] and 'He is most welcome and amongst family!'  [Bukhari]).

In other narrations we gain more details of the meeting of the Prophet (saw) and the Prophet Adam (as):

'There we saw a man sitting with some people on his right and some on his left. When he looked towards his right, he laughed and when he looked toward his left he wept. Then he said, " Welcome O pious Prophet and pious son!"  (or in another narration, " Welcome you are amongst family, O my son! What an amazing son you are!"  [Bukhari]).

I asked Jibril [as], "Who is he?" He replied, "He is Adam [as] and the people on his right and left are the souls of his offspring. Those on his right are the people of Paradise and those on his left are the people of Hell and when he looks towards his right he laughs and when he looks towards his left, he weeps"'. [Bukhari]

The Second to Sixth Sky

Then the Prophet (saw) continued to ascend the layers of sky with Jibril (as). Again, permission was sought to enter, and the angelic guards were delighted and welcomed the Messenger of Allah (saw).

At the second sky, he met the maternal cousins, the Prophets Isa (as) and Yahya (as).

At the third sky, the Prophet (saw) met the Prophet Yusuf (as) whom he described as having 'been given half of (world) beauty' [Muslim]. The Messenger of Allah (saw) had himself been blessed with all beauty, ma sha' Allah!

At the fourth sky, the Prophet (saw) met the Prophet Idris (as) whose soul was taken there, and he is praised in the Qur’an: 'We raised him to a lofty position'. [The Noble Qur’an, 19:57]

At the fifth sky, he met the Prophet Harun (as); and in the sixth sky, he met Prophet Harun's younger brother, the Prophet Musa (as).

Some narrations mention that Musa (as) was seen crying and a voice was heard saying, 'What makes you cry?' He said, 'My Lord, this is a young man whom You have sent after me (as a Prophet) and his Ummah will enter Paradise in greater numbers than my Ummah '. [Muslim]

At each one of these levels, these Prophets (as) welcomed the Prophet (saw) and supplicated good for him saying, 'Welcome O pious Prophet and pious brother!'  [Bukhari]

prophet muhammad miraj journey

The Seventh Sky

At the seventh sky, the Prophet (saw) met his greatest ancestor, the Prophet Ibrahim (as) who was 'reclining his back against al-Bait al-Ma‘mur. And there enter into it seventy thousand angels every day, never to return to it (again)'. [Muslim]

(Bait al-Ma'mur literally means 'the much-visited House'. It is the heavenly Ka‘bah directly above the one on earth).

Like Adam (as), Ibrahim (as) greeted the Prophet (saw) saying, 'Welcome O pious Prophet and pious son!'  [Bukhari]

In another narration, Ibrahim (as) conveyed his salaams to the Ummah of the Prophet (saw) and advised us that, 'Paradise has pure soil and delicious water, and that it is a flat treeless plain, and that its seeds are (saying), SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (All praise belongs to Allah), La ilaaha ill-Allah (There is no god but Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)'. [Tirmidhi]

The Lote Tree

The Prophet (saw) carried on his journey, reaching the Furthest Lote Tree. The Arabic word for this is Sidrah al-Muntaha [The Noble Qur’an, 53:14]. The Prophet (saw) described this vast tree in great detail!

  • '[Its] leaves were like elephant ears and its fruit like big earthenware vessels'. [Muslim]
  • 'Then when it was covered by the Command of Allah, it underwent such a change that none amongst the creation has the power to praise its beauty'. [Muslim]
  • 'A rider will travel in the shade of one of its branches for a hundred years,’ or ‘a hundred riders will seek to shade themselves with its shade'. [Tirmidhi]
  • The tree is surrounded with 'golden butterflies'. [Tirmidhi]
  • He further said: 'many a colour had covered it which I do not know (i.e. the colours of this tree were indescribable)'. [Muslim]
  • He also stated that, 'There terminates everything that ascends from the earth, and everything that descends from above'. [Tirmidhi]

SubhanAllah, the Prophet (saw) witnessed a truly amazing sign from Allah!

The Divine Meeting

At the end of this journey, the Prophet (saw) was brought into the Divine Presence, the ultimate source of strength and relief. It is impossible to imagine the beauty of this scene, or how loved, honoured and humbled the Prophet (saw) must have felt.

We do not know a great about what was privately discussed between Allah and His beloved (saw), with Allah simply stating, 'Then Allah revealed to His servant [saw] what He revealed' . [The Noble Qur’an, 53:10].

The Prophet (saw) mentioned, 'Then Allah revealed to me what he revealed to me and then He made obligatory for me fifty prayers every day and night'.  [Muslim]

It was here that Allah gave this Ummah the gift of compulsory Salah, a daily source of strength to Muslims because it gives us the opportunity to communicate with Allah and draw closer to Him - it is the believer's ascension! We know through the Prophet Musa’s (as) intervention and advice that fifty prayers were eventually reduced to five, but still rewarded as fifty, subhanAllah!

As we approach the anniversary of Al-Isra’ wal-Mi‘raj, let us take the time to deeply appreciate the gift of Salah and increase our voluntary prayers and night prayers.

Returning Home

prophet muhammad miraj journey

Finally, the Prophet (saw) was taken back down to the Blessed Masjid Al-Aqsa and returned to Makkah on the Buraq.

As he was transported home, he saw various caravans heading towards Makkah, which he would later describe to the Quraish as proof that he really had made this miraculous journey. Allah even displayed Bait al-Maqdis to the Prophet (saw), while the Quraish were cross-examining him in the Hijr of the Ka‘bah [Bukhari]. The entire journey had taken place in a small portion of a night , and there were many who would mock the Prophet (saw) for making such a claim.

For the Muslims, however, the story was a source of wonder and hope, as it continues to be for us today. On this night, the best of creation (saw) was given the honour of travelling to various blessed places on earth, then ascending the levels of sky and being finally welcomed into the Divine Presence! All this to honour the beloved Prophet (saw) and 'to show him some of Our signs!' [The Noble Qur’an, 17:1]

Before you go…

This year, the 27th night of Rajab - which was divinely chosen for the miraculous Night Journey - will fall on Friday 17th February 2023 , at Maghrib. We have an INCREDIBLE Sadaqah Jariyah opportunity for you on this significant anniversary!

We’re illuminating the Dome of the Rock Masjid! Sitting majestically at the centre of the Blessed Masjid Al-Aqsa complex, it is believed to be the exact site where the Prophet (saw) was ascended into the heavens on Al-Isra wal-Mi’raj!

SubhanAllah, gifting light to Masjid Al-Aqsa - which includes the Dome of the Rock Masjid - carries the reward of praying there - worth 1,000 prayers!

This hadith shows the wisdom of the Prophet (saw) and the generosity of Allah! Obviously, not all Muslims will be able to pray in Masjid Al-Aqsa, not just because of the difficulties and cost of travel, but also because of various conflicts that have occurred around it throughout history. However, we have been granted a beautiful way to gain the same reward as praying there - sending some oil to light its lamps!

The modern equivalent of this is, of course, contributing to the cost of its electric lighting. And Allah has granted us the opportunity to illuminate the Dome of the Rock Masjid , alhamdulillah!

You can give this beautiful Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of yourself or a loved one. We urge you not to miss out on this chance to serve the site of Al-Isra wal-Mi’raj!

What is Isra and Miraj?

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) had a miraculous journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and the heavens. This journey is known as Isra and Miraj in Islam. It has two parts: the night journey (Isra) and the Ascension (Mi’raj). During the night journey, He (SAW) travelled with the angel Jibril (Gabriel) on a winged horse called Buraq and prayed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem with other Prophets (Peace be upon them). In the Ascension, He met a different Prophet at each level of heaven. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also witnessed many wonders and signs of Allah Almighty.

In another blog, we discuss the What is Shab-e-Barat?

Isra and Miraj in the Quran

The journey of Isra and Miraj holds great significance in Islamic history and is mentioned in the Quran.

Surah Isra verse of the Quran gives the first piece of evidence about Prophet Muhammad (saw) Night Journey, Lailat al Miraj:

quran verses that describe Shab e Meraj, Al Isra wal Miraj

Glory be to the One Who took His servant Muḥammad by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (Quran 17:1)

The second piece of evidence about Shab e Meraj is from the Quran.

Surah Najm Verses 13-18

And he certainly saw that angel descend a second time. At the Lote Tree of the most extreme limit in the seventh heaven. Near which is the Garden of Eternal Residence. While the Lote Tree was overwhelmed with heavenly splendours. The Prophet’s sight never wandered, nor did it overreach. He certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs. (Surah Najm verses 13-18)

The Prophet (SAW) was sleeping near the Kaaba when he was awakened by Angel Jibril (SAW), who opened his chest, took out His heart, and washed it with Zamzam water . Then, he brought him a white beast called Al-Buraq, faster than lightning. The Prophet (SAW) mounted Al-Buraq and travelled with Jibril (SAW) to Jerusalem, where he led all the Prophets in prayer at al-Masjid al-Aqsa.

Isra and Miraj in Hadith

The following Hadees tells us about Shab e Meraj, the story of Al Isra wal Miraj:

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (RA) narrated that:

“On the Night of Isra, fifty prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet. Then it was decreased until it was made to five. Then it was called out: ‘O Muhammad! Indeed My Word does not change; these five prayers will be recorded for you as fifty.'” ( Jami’ Tirmidhi 213)

Narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA):

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) was presented with two cups one containing wine and the other milk on the night of his night journey at Jerusalem. He looked at it and took the milk. Gabriel said, “Thanks to Allah Who guided you to the Fitra (i.e. Islam); if you had taken the wine, your followers would have gone astray. (Sahih Bukhari 4709)

Narrated by Hazrat Anas ibn Malik (RA):

The Prophet (SAW) said: When I was taken up to heaven I passed by people who had nails of copper and were scratching their faces and their breasts. I said: Who are these people, Gabriel? He replied: They are those who were given to back biting and who aspersed people’s honour. Abu Dawud said: Yahya b. ‘Uthman has also transmitted it from Baqiyyah, there is no mention of Anas in it. (Abu Dawood 4878)

Gifts Conferred During the Night Journey

During the Night Journey, the Prophet (SAW) went beyond Sidrat al-Muntaha and entered the Divine Presence of Allah Almighty. Allah (SWT) gave him three gifts: the Five Daily Prayers , which were initially fifty but reduced to five after Hazrat Musa’s ((AS) advice; the promise that whoever believes in Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala and His Messenger will have their sins forgiven; and the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah, which protect from all evil.

Story of al-Isra and Miraj

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) made this Miraculous journey, Shab e Meraj, in the month of Rajab. Al Isra wal Miraj occurred during the Year of Sorrow , often known as a year of sadness and suffering. The loss of his beloved wife, Hazrat Khadija (RA), and his beloved uncle, Hazrat Abu Talib (AS), in that year led the Prophet (SAW) to experience great hardship.

In addition to all of these difficulties, Ta’if’s residents cruelly rejected the Prophet (SAW) when he visited the city to teach Islam, sending their kids out into the streets to stone him until he left. So Allah (SWT) presented him with a gift.

Isra – The First Part of the Night Journey

In the eleventh year of his prophethood, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) experienced a remarkable journey. Angel Jibril (AS) visited Him while He was asleep in the house of Hazrat Ummy Hani (RA), who happened to be His cousin. Hazrat Jibril came at night; that is why it is called Shab e Miraj . While He rested, Angel Jibril (AS) took the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) on a spiritual journey, which began at Masjid Al-Haram, the sacred site of Kaaba. At Masjid Al-Haram, Jibril (AS) performed a miracle by opening the Prophet’s (SAW) chest and taking out his heart. He then washed it with Zamzam water, blessed water from a well near the Kaaba. After washing it, he put the heart back in its place. This made the Prophet’s (SAW) heart pure and strong for the journey of Al Isra wal Miraj.

Then, Jibril (AS) brought a horse for the Prophet (SAW) to ride. The horse was called “ Buraq ,” and it was a white animal that looked like a mix of a mule and a donkey. But it was not an ordinary horse. It had wings, and it could fly faster than lightning. Buraq swiftly carried Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. This is another sacred mosque that Prophet Sulaiman (AS) built.

Leading Prayer during Isra and Miraj

The journey was quick, and even as He travelled, the Prophet (SAW) knew everything along the way. He saw many signs of Allah Almighty’s power and mercy. He also saw some of the Prophets who had passed away. For example, He saw the messenger Hazrat Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) praying in his grave. Finally, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) reached Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. He found a great gathering of all 124,000 Prophets (AS) who had ever lived there. They were waiting for Him on Miraj Night with respect and love. Angel Jibril (AS) led the Prophet (SAW) to the front, and He (Peace be upon Him) led them all in prayer in this blessed mosque. This was a great honor for Him and a sign of His high status among all the Prophets (AS). SUBHANALLAH!

Miraj – The Second Part of Al Isra wal Miraj

In the second part, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was taken up by Jibril to the first heaven. There, they were asked by a gatekeeper who they were and who they had with them. Jibril replied that he was Jibril and that he had Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) with him, who was invited by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. The gatekeeper opened the gate and let them in. In the first heaven, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) met Hazrat Adam (AS), the first human being and Prophet. He greeted him, and Adam (AS) welcomed him as his son and a Prophet.

Then, they ascended to the second heaven, where they met Hazrat Isa (Jesus) (AS) and Hazrat Yahya (John)(AS). Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and angel Jibril then mounted to the third heaven, where they met Hazrat Yusuf (Joseph) (AS), the son of Jacob. They ascended to the fourth heaven, where they met Hazrat Idris (Enoch) (AS), who was raised to a high position by Allah. Then, they ascended to the fifth heaven, where they met Hazrat Harun (Aaron) (AS), the brother of Hazrat Moses (AS). They ascended to the sixth heaven, where they met Hazrat Musa (Moses) (AS), who spoke to Allah Almighty directly. They ascended to the seventh heaven, where they met Hazrat Ibrahim (Abraham) (AS), the friend of Allah (SWT). All of these Prophets greeted Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and they welcomed Him as a Prophet.

Read our other blog on the Jannah – The Reward for True Muslims .

At the seventh level, he also saw Sidrat al-Muntaha , a large lote tree that marks the end of creation. There, Jibril stopped and told Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) that he could not go any further but that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had to continue on his own. So, this was the most vital moment on Al Isra wal Miraj.

In our other blog, we also discuss the Concept of Jahannam in Islam .

Shab e Meraj – Why we Pray 5 Times a Day

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) entered the presence of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, who spoke to Him directly without any intermediary. Allah Almighty told Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that he had ordained fifty prayers daily for his people. As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) descended from the presence of Allah (SWT), he met Hazrat Moses (AS) again in the sixth heaven. Prophet Moses (AS) asked him what Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala had ordained for his people. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told him that Allah Almighty had ordained fifty prayers daily. Hazrat Mosa (AS) said this was too much for his people, and they could not perform it. He advised Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to return to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala and ask for a reduction. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) agreed, returned to Allah Almighty, and asked for a reduction. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala reduced the prayers by five.

The Decree To Five Prayers

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) returned to Moses (AS) and told him what happened. Moses said this was still too much for his people, and they could not perform it. He advised Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to return to Allah and ask for another reduction. After each reduction, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) consulted Mosa (AS), who suggested further reductions until the prayers were set at five a day. Mosa (AS) continued to advise additional reductions, but Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) felt reluctant to ask for more and accepted Allah’s final decree. Despite concerns, he hoped his people could manage the five daily prayers. The command for praying five times a day is one of the three gifts of Miraj.

When he reached His presence, Allah Almighty commanded Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to perform five daily prayers. After thanking Allah (SWT), he returned to Mecca with Jibril. The event is known as Shab-e-Meraj or Al Isra wal Miraj, and it took place on the 27th of Rajab. It is considered the second-greatest miracle after the revelation of the Quran.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala then said that He had decreed the five prayers a day for Prophet Muhammad’s Ummah but would reward them as if they had performed fifty prayers daily. He said He would not change His word or return on His promise. SUBHANALLAH

Layla-tul-Miraj: The Miraculous Night Journey

For those who do not believe in the reality of miracles, are clearly unaware of our Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) life and its incidences. Islamic history is a prime witness to these miracles. And one of the greatest miracles of his time was that of Layla-tul-Miraaj , the night of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) ascent to the Heavens. It is known to have been not only a spiritual journey but a physical one as well. This journey signifies the greatness and importance of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Allah’s (SWT) eyes. The night this year in 2019, falls on between 3rd and 4th April 2019.

This night is also known as the event of “ Isra and Miraj ” which essentially denotes two parts of the journey. Isra, which means ‘walking in the night’, refers to the first part of the Prophet’s (PBUH) journey from Makkah  to Masjid Al-Aqsa . The Holy Prophet (PBUH) was visited by the angel Jibrael and was carried to Masjid-al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem) on “ buraq ”, the steed of the prophets. Allah (SWT) verifies the truth of this journey in the Quran as well:

“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” ( Surah Isra:1 )

The second part of the journey is known as Miraaj , which in the literal sense means “ ladder ”, and it alludes to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) ascension to Heaven itself. From Jerusalem, the Prophet Mohamad (PBUH) was then transported to Paradise on his steed, where he roamed all seven levels of paradise and met a number of the prophets who had come before him, which included Hazrat Adam (AS), Musa (AS), Isa (AS), Yahya (AS), Yusuf (AS), Ibrahim (AS) and many others. Upon reaching Sidra-tul-Muntaha in the seventh heaven, a tree marking the very end of paradise and the beginning of the abode of Allah (SWT), Jibrael halted as his entry was forbidden and let the Prophet (PBUH) pass. Here, our beloved Prophet (PBUH) got a chance to meet the Almighty and converse with Him. It is on this night, that the Prophet (PBUH) achieved a state of closeness with Allah (SWT) that is beyond human measure.

Moreover, it was on this occasion that Allah (SWT) on all Muslims enjoined the five daily prayers. It was originally supposed to be fifty daily prayers, but our Prophet (PBUH) beseeched on behalf of his Ummah to make it easier for them and alas, Allah (SWT) brought the number down to five.

Allah (SWT) mentions a few details about the journey in another part of the Quran as well:

“While he was in the highest part of the horizon: Then he approached and came closer, And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. The (Prophet’s) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? For indeed he saw him at a second descent. Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: near it is the Garden of Abode. Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) (His) sight never swerved nor did it go wrong! For truly did he see of the Signs of His Lord the Greatest” ( Surah Najm :7-18)

The sole purpose of the Holy Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) miraculous journey to the Heavens was an act of declaration about the exalted status of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the realm of Islam and testified to the irreplaceable position he held in the eyes of Allah (SWT) and His creation.

However, the date of this journey is still unclear as there is no concrete indication in any Sahih hadith for its exact occurrence. It is thought to have taken place somewhere between the Prophet’s visit to Taif and the time of the Hijra, around the 27th of the Islamic month of Rajab , but this date is not officially recognized by Islamic scholars.

Layla-tul-Miraj serves as a witness to Allah’s (SWT) infinite grandeur and power and His bond with His creation. Allah (SWT) sent the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as a gift to His creation, an exemplary figure and role model for every human to look up to. This night marks itself as a test of faith in mankind and enjoins them to believe in the truth of all that Allah (SWT) is and all that only He is capable of.

Layla-tul-Miraj holds great significance in the lives of Muslims across the globe, where the Prophet Muhamad's (SAW) ascension is remembered and the ultimate purpose of it is recollected. It is considered one of the most sacred of miracles of the Almighty Allah, which He chose to bestow upon Prophet Mohammad (SAW) and only him.

For more information, see Shab e Meraj 2021 .

The Quran, written centuries ago, contains profound hints at future discoveries. It includes scientific facts that surpass the knowledge of anyone who lived in the 7th century. This serves as compelling evidence of the divine nature of the Quran.

This year, Nisf Shaban (Shab-e-Barat) will start after the sunset of Tuesday, March 7th, 2023.

Isra wal Meraj is a journey of faith and revelation that the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) took from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the 7th Heaven.

Isra and Miraj (The Night Journey) is miraculous journey that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) took in one night from Makkah to Bait al-Maqdas and then an ascension to the heavens.

The Night Journey: the Spiritual Significance of Isra and Mi`raj

Shaykh muhammad hisham kabbani.

Imam Sh`arawi asks, “What would make the Prophet’s sight swerve? Some say it was Jibril, but the Prophet had seen Jibril many times and Jibril was with him for the duration of the Night Journey and Ascension. It is irrelevant to say at this juncture that the Prophet’s sight did not swerve or go wrong, because if this was in reference to Jibril the Prophet had many opportunities to see him already. Allah doesn’t say anything irrelevant which is why I side with the majority of ` ulama (including Imam Nawawi) in saying that with his physical eyes the Prophet saw Allah (swt).”

The Prophet came all the way to the Divine Throne( `arsh ), reached qaaba kawsayni (the distance of two bow lengths), and reached the Paradise of Jannat al-Ma’wa near the Lote-Tree ( sidrat al-muntahaa ). After all this what could possibly make his sight swerve or go wrong? As mentioned above, the Isra and Miraj took place several years after Jibril brought the first revelation to the Prophet. Thus, it is illogical that after being seen by the Prophet so many times that now Jibril would have the potential to make his sight swerve.

Ma zagha al-basaru wa ma tagha

53:17 His sight did not swerve or go wrong.

Laqad ra’a min ayaati rabbihi al-kubraa

53:18 Indeed he saw the Greatest Signs of his Lord

Afa ra’ aytum al-laat wal-`uzza

53: 19 Have you seen Lat and ‘Uzza (two pagan idols)

Wa manaat ath-thaalithata ‘l-ukhraa

53:20 And the third one Manat (another idol)

Why does Allah mention these three false deities here immediately after mentioning the “ Greatest Signs of his Lord ” in 53:18? Scholars say that verses 53:19-20 name the idols that people were worshipping in order to contrast them to Allah (swt) mentioned in 53:18. If 53:18 referred to Jibril then it would not follow to mention the false idols after it.

That is the greatness of Sayyidina Muhammad. No one saw his Lord except for Muhammad, so he is the only real muwahhid . No one except Muhammad has real tawhid , only imitation tawhid .

Prophet Abraham was the father of the prophets and was granted spiritual vision to see the workings of the universe and Prophet Moses was granted to speak with his Lord. But Allah moved Prophet Muhammad with his physical body in defiance of the physical laws of the universe to the Unseen, a place where there is nothing and no possibility of anything to be there – laa khalaa wa laa malaa . Allah took Muhammad there and revealed Himself to him, in the manner He wished. How this was we don’t know. It is ghayb (unseen, unknown). But we know that this is not in reference to Jibril who was seen by the Prophet many times. We again recall the opinion of Imam Nawawi who said, “Most of the scholars say that the Prophet saw his Lord with the eyes of his head ra’a rabbahu bi `aynay raasihi.”

Looking at these verses in Surat Isra and Surat Najm we see that the Isra and Miraj was not like Allah showing Ibrahim malakut of the universe. Allah gave this universe to all of humanity whether in dunya or akhira . However Allah showed Muhammad something related to Himself “ ayatina Our Signs.”

Bukhari Volume 8, Book 77, Number 610:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

(regarding the Verse) “ And We granted the vision (Ascension to the heavens “Miraj”) which We showed you (O Muhammad as an actual eye witness) but as a trial for mankind.’ (17.60): Allah’s Apostle actually saw with his own eyes the vision (all the things which were shown to him) on the night of his Night Journey to Jerusalem (and then to the heavens). The cursed tree which is mentioned in the Qur’an is the tree of Az-Zaqqum.

Volume 7, Book 69, Number 482:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Isra and Miraj

Table of Contents

Isra and Miraj, two significant events in Islamic history, hold profound importance in the hearts of Muslims worldwide. These events, as described in the Quran and authentic Hadith, recount the miraculous night journey and ascension of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the heavens. The phrase “Isra and Miraj” refers to the Night Journey and Ascension, showcasing the unparalleled connection between the Prophet and Allah.

Isra – The Night Journey:

The journey began when the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) brought the celestial steed Buraq to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Mecca. The Prophet mounted Buraq and, accompanied by Angel Jibreel, embarked on a celestial journey. The Quran describes this extraordinary event in Surah Al-Isra (17:1):

“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”

The “farthest mosque” is commonly interpreted as Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, emphasizing the sanctity of the city in Islam.

Miraj – The Ascension:

Following the Night Journey, the Miraj refers to Prophet Muhammad’s ascension through the heavens. This aspect of the journey is highlighted in the Quran as follows:

“For he certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. Have you considered Al-Lat and Al-Uzza? And Manat, the third – the other one? Is the male for you and for Him the female? That, then, is an unjust division.” Surah Al-Najm (53:13-18)

These verses underscore the Prophet’s witnessing of divine signs and reinforce the oneness of Allah.

Authentic Hadith on Isra and Miraj:

The Hadith literature provides further details about this miraculous journey. One such narration is found in Sahih al-Bukhari, where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recounts the events, describing the encounters with other prophets and the breathtaking sights in each heaven.

Hadith on the Night Journey:

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:”Then I was made to ascend to the lowest heaven, and asked for the gate to be opened, but it was asked, ‘Who is it?’ I said, ‘Muhammad.’ It was said, ‘Has he been called?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ When I reached the gate, it was said, ‘Who is it?’ I said, ‘Muhammad.’ It was said, ‘Has he been called?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ The gate was opened for me, and I saw Gabriel, who said, ‘This is your brother, Gabriel.'” Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 54, Hadith 429

Hadith on the Ascension:

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:”Then the group of prophets came and I saw Moses, Jesus, and Abraham, and I was told about the other prophets between them and me. Then I was raised up to the second heaven, and Gabriel asked for the gate to be opened, but it was asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel answered, ‘Gabriel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is accompanying you?’ Gabriel replied, ‘Muhammad.’ It was said, ‘Has he been called?’ Gabriel said, ‘Yes.’ When we reached over the second heaven, I saw Yahya (John) and Isa (Jesus) who were cousins. Gabriel said, ‘These are John and Jesus, so greet them.’ I greeted them and they returned the greeting saying, ‘Welcome, O Pious Brother and Pious Prophet!'” Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 54, Hadith 429

Conclusion:

Isra and Miraj stand as a testament to the Prophet Muhammad’s unique and honorable position in Islam. The events symbolize the Prophet’s closeness to Allah and serve as a source of inspiration and reflection for Muslims worldwide. The Night Journey and Ascension reinforce the importance of faith, prayer, and submission to the divine will, offering believers a spiritual journey that transcends the earthly realm.

"The best of what a man leaves behind are three: a righteous child who supplicates for him, ongoing charity the reward of which reaches him, and knowledge that is acted upon after him."

Sunan Ibn Mājah

"Every day two angels come down from Heaven and one of them says, 'O Allah! Compensate every person who spends in Your Cause,' and the other (angel) says, 'O Allah! Destroy every miser.'"

The Miraculous Journey

The story of Miraj is narrated in the Quran and Hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet). According to Islamic tradition, the journey took place on the 27th day of the Islamic month of Rajab.

On this extraordinary night, the Angel Gabriel visited the Prophet Muhammad while he was resting at the Kaaba in Mecca. The Angel led the Prophet on a heavenly steed named Buraq .

With remarkable swiftness, they traveled to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, where the Prophet Muhammad led a congregation of all the prophets of Islam in prayer.

From Jerusalem, the Prophet Muhammad ascended through the seven heavens, meeting various prophets along the way, including Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Subsequently, he finally came into the presence of Allah.

During this transcendent encounter, Allah bestowed several gifts upon the Prophet, including the command for Muslims to pray five times a day.
