How does the NBA playoff format work?

The top eight teams in each conference are seeded one through eight. The No. 1 seed plays the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed plays the No. 7 seed and so on. The top four seeds have home-court advantage.

The NBA Playoffs are in a bracket format. The winner of the No. 1 seed-No. 8 seed matchup will play the winner of the No. 4 seed-No. 5 seed matchup. The No. 2 seed-No. 7 seed winner will take on the No. 3 seed-No. 6 seed winner.

There are four rounds in the NBA playoffs. Each series is best-of-seven.

First round playoff matchups to watch

Grizzlies vs. Lakers: James and the Lakers are back in the playoffs after missing it last year. The Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-102 in overtime during the Play-In, overcoming a 15-point second-half deficit.

Los Angeles enters the playoffs having won 10 of 12 games. They lead the season series against the Grizzlies 2-1. The Lakers ranked No. 2 in the league in defense post trade deadline. They are going to need their defense to step up to contain Ja Morant and the Grizzlies. The Lakers are trying to become the first team to win a playoff series after advancing through the Play-In.

Kings vs. Warriors: The Kings are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Led by Domantas Sabonis , De’Aaron Fox , Harrison Barnes and Keegan Murray , this team can score. Sacramento led the NBA in offensive rating this season by a wide margin: 118.6 points per 100 possessions, the highest in history.

The Kings, however, are facing the defending champion Warriors, who will have a full lineup. Andrew Wiggins is returning to the lineup for Game 1 , after not playing since Feb. 13. Despite Golden State’s record being 44-38 entering the playoffs, this is a team that has Steph Curry , Klay Thompson and Draymond Green , who know how to raise their level during the postseason.

Suns vs. Clippers: This series is filled with star power. Kawhi Leonard . Kevin Durant . Chris Paul . Devin Booker . Deandre Ayton .

When the Suns have their big four of Durant, Paul, Booker and Ayton on the floor, they average 122.3 points per 100 possessions and 105.0 points allowed per 100 possessions in 159 minutes. The Clippers, however, rank fourth in offensive efficiency 119.8 points per 100 possessions since Paul George was inactive after suffering a knee injury.

George is expected to be sidelined for at least the beginning of the first round playoff series against the Suns. Can LA produce on offense in George’s absence? Can the Clippers slow down the Suns’ offensive weapons? This is a rematch of the 2021 Western Conference Finals, which the Suns won in six games.

Tyronn Lue on Paul George: "We're definitely not going to do anything to hurt PG. Even if he does try to come back, and if he's not right, then we're not going to let him go. Because we're not going to let him injure himself and make it worse than what it really is." https://t.co/tHfx8MBoYg pic.twitter.com/OuxHHde1ib — Law Murray ❎️ (@LawMurrayTheNU) April 14, 2023

Cavaliers vs. Knicks: The Knicks are back in the playoffs after missing it last year. The Cavs return to the playoffs for the first time since reaching the NBA Finals in 2017-18.

The spotlight will be on Donovan Mitchell , Evan Mobley , Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen for Cleveland. But keep an eye on Caris LeVert ’s role coming off the bench. If he can provide scoring and defend the Knicks, Cleveland is going to be tough to beat.

A big question coming into this series for the Knicks is Julius Randle . His status for Game 1 and beyond remains in question due to a sprained left ankle. Can Jalen Brunson and RJ Barrett provide the offensive spark?

It’s going to be interesting to see how the Cavaliers defend the Knicks on the glass. New York ranked third in the NBA in offensive rebounds per game (12.6) and second-chance points (4.5). Expect this series to go six or seven games.

When do the 2023 NBA playoffs start?

With the conclusion of the Play-In Tournament on 14 April, the NBA playoffs will start on 15 April .

How do the NBA playoffs work?

The NBA Playoffs is a four-round, best-of-seven emilination postseason tournament held every year to determine that season's champion. The playoffs are held after the league's regular season and its preliminary postseason tournament, the NBA Play-In Tournament.

Each playoff matchup is determined by seeding (i.e. the first seed will play the eighth seed, second seed plays the seventh seed, etc.), with the top four seeds in each conference enjoying home-court advantage. Series are played in the 2–2–1–1–1 format, meaning the team with home-court advantage hosts Games 1, 2, 5, and 7, while their opponent hosts Games 3, 4, and 6, with Games 5, 6 and 7 being played if needed. The first team to four wins advances to the next round.

Monday (5/6) sports viewership: Slight gain for NBA semis

Full chart below.

Full chart below.

The NBA’s second round delivered a pair of viewership increases and topped the day in sports viewing for Monday, May 6.

Monday’s Pacers-Knicks second round NBA playoff Game 1 averaged 4.77 million viewers across TNT (4.25M) and truTV (513K), up 1% from Sixers-Celtics a year ago (4.74M) and the top sportscast of the day. The Timberwolves’ Game 2 rout of the Nuggets followed with 4.67 million (TNT: 4.06M; truTV: 609K), up 3% from Suns-Nuggets last year (4.54M).

The first three games of the second round have increased over last year’s equivalent window, a streak destined to end Tuesday, when last year’s comparable windows will begin to include Lakers-Warriors. Through Monday, the NBA Playoffs was averaging 3.24 million viewers across ABC, ESPN, TNT/truTV and NBA TV — down 8% from 3.54 million a year ago.

Shifting to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Bruins-Panthers Game 1 averaged 1.85 million on ESPN — unsurprisingly down 10% from Rangers-Devils Game 7 in the same window last year (2.05M) but the second-largest Game 1 audience on cable in the past nine years. Only Hurricanes-Rangers the previous day averaged more viewers.

No other sportscast Monday cracked even the 300,000 viewer mark, as a Manchester United-Crystal Palace English Premier League match topped the non-playoff slate with just 259,000 on USA Network.

Further down the dial, FS1 drew 250,000 for a Tigers-Guardians Major League Baseball game, followed by primetime regional action on MLB Network at 150,000.

Amazon to get In-Season and Play-in tournaments as part of NBA deal

The NBA's two newly-created properties are reportedly headed to Amazon in the league's new rights deal.

ESPN rooting hard for Boston and New York in NBA and NHL to get to conference finals. Especially for the NHL. Need either Boston or NY from the East in the Stanley Cup finals. Really would not matter in the West. But, if Carolina or Florida make it to the finals that would be awful for the Stanley Cup ratings (and would be similar to last year). NBA may suffer a little, but, wouldn’t be as bad without NY or Boston.

Most triple doubles in NBA playoff history

By colin keane | may 6, 2024.

For now, Magic Johnson remains the king of playoff triple doubles

The NBA Playoffs triple-double is a rare and elusive accomplishment. Even more remarkable is the ability to record a playoff triple-double on several occasions. Only 10 players in the history of the NBA have recorded more than five playoff triple-doubles in their career.

It is a testament to the singularity of the playoff triple-double that Magic Johnson, who last recorded a playoff triple-double 37 years ago in the 1987 NBA Playoffs, remains the all-time leader in the statistic with 30 total playoff triple-doubles.

Right behind Johnson on the list is LeBron James, with 28 career playoff triple-doubles. The rest of the top 10 includes Nikola Jokic (18 playoff triple-doubles), Russell Westbrook (12), Jason Kidd (11), Draymond Green (10), Rajon Rondo (10), Larry Bird (10), Wilt Chamberlain (9) and Oscar Robertson (8).

LeBron James still has a chance to usurp Johnson as the NBA's playoff triple-double leader, but that crown will inevitably land on Jokic's head in due time. No player in the history of the game records playoff triple-doubles at the rate of Jokic. In looking at playoff triple-double percentage (below), which is simply total playoff triple-doubles divided by total playoff games played, Jokic leads all players historically at a 24.32 rate.

Luka Doncic, third place on the list with a playoff triple double percentage of 11.77, also has a surefire opportunity to challenge Johnson's record in the coming years.

Nikola Jokic is an historical anomaly

Jokic is by far the most likely future king of playoff triple-doubles, however. The Serbian center, widely expected to be awarded his third NBA MVP in four years this summer, recorded 10 triple-doubles in last year's playoffs alone.

Such a feat is even more impressive when one considers the fact that no player besides Jokic in the 2023 playoffs recorded more than one triple-double, and there were only 14 total triple-doubles recorded overall.

Jokic's 10 triple-doubles in last year's playoffs also represents an historical anomaly.

If one were to remove Jokic from the equation completely and compare playoff triple-doubles recorded in 2023 to playoff triple-doubles recorded in 1990, the frequency of the playoff triple-double would appear to be constant over time. There were 4 non-Jokic playoff triple-doubles logged in the 2023 playoffs (Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry and Jamal Murray with one each), and there were three playoff triple-doubles logged in the 1990 playoffs (Larry Bird, Hakeem Olajuwon and Scottie Pippen with one each).

Case in point: playoff triple-doubles are extremely difficult to come by in the NBA regardless of the era, but Nikola Jokic has become a glaring exception to this rule.

Eight teams remain in the battle for the larry o'brien trophy.

play-in-1.png

The New York Knicks are up 2-0 in their second-round NBA playoff series against the Indiana Pacers after rallying for a Game 2 win on Wednesday night. Jalen Brunson missed the final 15 minutes of the first half, but he returned in the third quarter and helped spark a come-from-behind win for New York at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are now two wins away from their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are also up 2-0 in the second round. The Wolves took two games off the reigning champion Nuggets in Denver to start their second-round series, and they'll try to make it 3-0 at home on Friday night.

The top seeds in each conference, the Celtics in the East and the Thunder in the West, both are up 1-0 in their series. The Celtics host the Cavaliers again on Thursday before the Thunder take on the Mavericks.

The postseason field started with 20 teams. The Warriors, Kings, Hawks and Bulls were ousted in the Play-In Tournament before the Pelicans, Suns, Clippers, Lakers, Heat, 76ers, Bucks and Magic were eliminated in the first round.

NBA playoffs: Jalen Brunson, after early injury scare, leads Knicks past Pacers for Game 2 win

The knicks now hold a 2-0 series lead over the pacers in the eastern conference semifinals.

The Indiana Pacers seemed poised to even up the series Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Then Jalen Brunson returned.

Brunson, after going down with an injury scare early, came back into the game and led the Knicks to a key 130-121 win over the Pacers in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series. That gave the Knicks a 2-0 lead in the series as it heads back to Indianapolis.

"I'm just happy I [returned], to be honest with you," Brunson said afterward on TNT. "We found a way. That's it."

Pacers surge early with Jalen Brunson out

The Pacers mounted a 17-point swing in the first half after the Knicks lost Brunson in the opening minutes, which nearly resulted in a perfect opportunity to steal a game on the road.

It appeared as if Brunson tweaked his right foot while on defense late in the first quarter. He took an awkward step while moving into the lane, and then he immediately called for a sub after the Pacers scored.

Here’s my best guess of when Jalen Brunson tweaked his right foot. He immediately demanded a sub. pic.twitter.com/Wxe6ZWW3oT — Scott Agness (@ScottAgness) May 9, 2024

Brunson left the game after just eight minutes, and went back to the locker room. His father, Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson, left the bench in the second quarter to go back to the locker room, too, though the team didn’t provide an update for quite some time. Eventually, midway through the second quarter, the Knicks said that Brunson was dealing with a sore right foot. He was initially questionable to return, but came back to start the second half to a huge standing ovation in Manhattan.

The Knicks were up by seven points when Brunson left the floor, though they entered halftime down by 10 points — which marked a massive 17-point swing for the Pacers. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton had 22 points in the first half while shooting 7-of-12 from the field, which doubled his shot attempts from Game 1.

Knicks rally with Brunson back

Brunson’s return seemed to make all the difference for the Knicks. They took the lead almost instantly in the second half, and came out of the gate on a 21-6 tear. The Knicks held Indiana to just 18 points in the third quarter, 10 of which came in the final four minutes, and took an eight-point lead into the final period — which completely flipped the game after halftime.

The Knicks lost O.G. Anunoby to a leg injury in the third quarter, however, after he pulled up awkwardly while driving to the rim. He was quickly ruled out with a left hamstring injury, and finished with 28 points and shot 10-of-19 from the field. It's unclear how severe his injury is, or if he'll be available for Game 3 on Friday night.

Though the Pacers opened the fourth quarter on a quick 6-0 burst, Brunson responded with a massive and-one layup to keep them up by multiple possessions.

The Knicks then used a 7-0 run, backed off a clutch 3-pointer from Donte DiVincenzo and then a perfect dump from him down to Precious Achiuwa to finally put the Pacers away late in the period. That allowed them to roll to the nine-point win, which gave them a two-game lead in the series.

Haliburton led the Pacers with 34 points, nine assists and six rebounds while shooting 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Andrew Nembhard added 15 points and Pascal Siakam finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle was ejected in the final minute, too, after arguing with officials over a double-dribble call that felt like it was frustration boiling over.

Brunson finished with 29 points, all but five of which came in the second half, and five assists while shooting 11-of-18 from the field. DiVincenzo added 28 points, and Josh Hart dropped 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Game 3 of the series is set for Friday night in Indianapolis. While there are plenty of questions surrounding the Knicks' health, both with Brunson and Anunoby , the Knicks are in an incredible position to make their first Eastern Conference finals since 2000.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, picks, Fantasy golf power rankings: PGA Tour predictions, expert best bets

Hero Image

After the Rory McIlroy-Shane Lowry team won in a playoff at last week's Zurich Classic, the PGA Tour returns to its individual stroke play format for this week's CJ Cup Byron Nelson event in Texas. A full field of 156 golfers will compete for a $9.5 million purse for the third 2024 event in the Lone Star State.

Jordan Spieth is the +1600 favorite, followed by defending champion Jason Day (+1800), Si Woo Kim (+2000), Will Zalatoris (+2200), Adam Scott and Alex Noren (+2500).

With a competitive field again this week, who can you trust for your CJ Cup Byron Nelson golf picks? Before you set your 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson golf lineups or make any PGA Tour bets, you NEED to see the Fantasy golf rankings from Fantasy expert Eric Cohen .

Cohen is an avid golf bettor who correctly predicted the pre-tournament outright winner of the 2024 Players Championship (Scottie Scheffler +550), 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic (Rickie Fowler +1400), 2023 PGA Championship (Brooks Koepka +2000), 2023 Honda Classic (Chris Kirk +3500), 2022 Open Championship (Cameron Smith +2200), 2022 U.S. Open (Matt Fitzpatrick +2500), and 2022 Phoenix Open (Scheffler's first career victory at +2800).

Eric is a contributor to SportsLine's YouTube shows including "Early Edge" and is the host of "The Early Wedge" golf show (live on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. ET).  Anyone who has followed Cohen's predictions has made positive gains on their golf picks.

Now, Cohen has studied the field set to play at TPC Craig Ranch and revealed his CJ Cup Byron Nelson Fantasy golf rankings.

We can tell you he is backing Alex Noren as his top choice this week despite having no PGA Tour victories on his resume. "The Swede has made the cut in 14 straight events, despite only finishing in the top 10 once since January. The ball-striking numbers have been good and the putter has mostly cooperated en route to a slew of top-20s of late. Between 2009-18, he won 10 events on the DP World Tour and might be the best player on the PGA Tour without a victory."

On the other hand, Cohen is fading Will Zalatoris at +2200. "Once again, the putter is plaguing Zalatoris, as he's lost strokes on the greens in four straight stroke play events. He's also not the type of player to thrive in birdie fest events."

Cohen also is backing several underdogs in his 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson Fantasy golf picks, including a triple-digit longshot who would be a nice piece for DFS lineups ! If this player can pull off a stunning result, it would bring a HUGE payoff and be a valuable piece for CJ Cup Byron Nelson Fantasy golf lineups. You ABSOLUTELY need to see who it is before locking in any fantasy golf picks.

Who wins the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch ,  a nd which triple-digit longshots could bring a HUGE payout and be the difference for your Fantasy golf picks? Join SportsLine now to get Eric Cohen's Fantasy golf rankings and picks for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, all from the Fantasy expert who has delivered a positive ROI with his golf picks !
