How to reach Chikmagalur

Bangalore to chikmagalur distance is approx 240 kms if you go by shortest route.

There are 3 routes which you can take to reach Chikmaglur

  • Go via NH 75 , you need to take a left on Bangalore Mangalore Highway from Neelamangala. The road takes you straight to Hassan and from there you need to take a turn towards Chikmaglur. This is the shortest way and will be around 240 Kms
  • The second way is to go via Tumkur and Chitradurga. This is via NH 48 and will be around 300 Kms. You can take this route only if you want to visit Chitradurga on the way. Being NH this route is also very good.
  • The third rout is via Mysore toad and this I will not recommend as there is a heavy traffic on this road on weekend with lots of people heading to Mysore.

So the first route is best. It is shortest. No much traffic and nice road all along the way with many nice food options through out.

Bangalore to Chikmagalur – 2 Day itinerary

So below is the itinerary which we followed and we instead of taking 2 days, took two and half days instead. That is instead of leaving on Saturday morning, we left by 3.00 PM on Friday. Anticipating a 6 hour drive, we expected to reach by 9.00 PM and check into the hotel.

Which actually went as per plan. We left Bangalore by 3.00 PM and reached hotel by 8.30 PM.

Now this is one suggestion from my side. If you want to stay in a hotel, better to choose one which is near KSRTC bus stand.

Day 1 itinerary

  • 8.30 AM – Have breakfast and leave hotel. Our first stop was Mullayangiri peak.
  • 9.15 AM – Reach Mullayangiri parking lot. Start climbing. Around 450 steps to reach peak. Will take minimum 30 mins.

  • 11.10 AM – start for the next spot which is Jhari falls also called as butter milk falls and on the way stop at Honnamanna falls for 10 mins

Day 2 itinerary

On Day 2 we had planned to visit Belvadi, Halebedu , Belur and Yagachi dam and return back to Bangalore. Travel back to Bangalore will take approx 6 hours so we had planned to leave for Bangalore by 3.00 PM at-least. And hence we have to start early.

So, we decided not to have the break fast at hotel and check out early. We checked out by 7.00 AM

  • 7.00 AM to 7.10 AM – travel to Kodandarama temple
  • 7.10 AM to 7.30 AM – Pay darshan to Lord Rama at this ancient temple
  • 7.30 AM to 8.00 AM – Travel to Belvadi
  • 8.00 AM to 8.30 AM – Visit Belvadi temples. There are 2 temples, each will not take more that 15 mins
  • 8.30 to 8.50 AM – Travel to Halebidu .
  • 8.50 AM to 9.20 – Visit Halebidu Hoysala temple
  • 9.20 AM to 10.00 AM – Find a good restaurant and have some nice breakfast
  • 10.00 AM to 10.45 AM – Travel to Yagachi Dam and Yagachi Water Adventure Sports Center
  • 10.45 AM to 12.00 PM – Spend some good time at Yagachi Dam and enjoy some nice water sports at Yagachi Water Adventure Sports Center

  • 1.15 PM to 2.30 PM – Lunch at Belur
  • 2.30 PM – Head back to Bengaluru

So this was our itinerary for 2 and half days. If you see from my list of Chikamagalur Tourist Places, I was not able to cover all of them. But the itinerary I followed was the best I could in this limited time.

If I had one day more in hand, there are a lot of other places, I could have covered.

Below are some details about the spots which I visited.

Mullayana Giri Peak

This is the highest peak in Karnatka and one of then most visited and must visit tourist spots in Chikmagalur. The road leading to the parking lot of this peak is good. It is a concrete road. Only at some places the road becomes a bit narrow and becomes difficult for 2 large vehicles to pass.

But other wise the drive is ok. For an experienced driver, it will not be much issue.

The only challenge is if you visit during Monsoon, there is chances of slippery roads and landslides.

From the parking lot, there is a paved way to the top of the hill. These are around 450 steps which you have to climb up.

places to visit on the way to chikmagalur from bangalore

At the top of the hill is a small Lord Shiva temple. The view from top is amazing. Just after monsoon the beauty of this place is such that it cannot be described in words.

Seethalayana Mata temple

This is a small but very beautiful Seethalayana Mata temple . You can visit this temple on the way to Mullayangiri.

So you can either visit this temple while going up to Mullayana Giri Peak or while returning back. There is ample parking space and wash room facilities.

Honnamanna falls & Jhari Falls ( Butter Milk Falls)

After Mulayangir peak and Seethalayana Mata templ e you can go to Jhari falls. Honnamanna falls is on the way.

Honnamanna falls is a very small but a beautiful water fall just on the main road. So you do not have to walk a lot to reach at the falls. In monsoon this fall looks very beautiful.

As you can see in the photograph, a proper steps are mad to let water fall through them. Quite safe to go near the water. There are some stalls near by selling some good bhajji and tea. So while going to Jhari falls you stop here.

After Honnamanna falls the move to Jhari falls entry point. Jhari falls cannot be accessed by your own vehicle. So you have to park near the entry point and hire a Jeep to reach till falls.

The Jeep if you book full will cost you 700/- for round trip. You can also go solo ie. the Jeep is shared with other tourist. The cost is generally Rs 150/- per person. But in that case you need to wait till the Jeep is full ( 5 people).

The Jeep guy will give you a token. So once you reach the Jhari falls, the Jeep guy will go and while coming back you need to show the token to the returning Jeep. So the Jeep will be different when you return.

Also since the token is per Jeep if you are going in sharing, you need to make sure that all of you come back at the same time.

The off-roading experience till the Jhari falls is amazing. The fall itself is worth a visit.

Chikmagalur Jhari falls

The water falls from a height and you are allowed to go inside the falling water and enjoy some cool water spring. You can go and bath there. It is a nice experience. This water fall is a must visit.

Baba Budan Giri

This is a small cave temple dedicated to Baba Budan. The area around this temple offer a nice view point and immediately around a kilometer from this place is Z Point which offers one of the most amazing view of western ghats.

Baba Budan giri hill range is at 1895  meter and which is more or less same as Mullayangiri peak.

Mullayangiri peak is at 1930 meters. So you can say that both of these hill ranges have the highest peak in Karnataka.

Z Point – view point

Z Point view point is around 1 Kilo meter from Baba Budan Giri temple and offers a amazing view , as I said before of the western ghats.

Once you park the car at the parking lot, you will see 2 peaks. One near the parking lot and other a bit far. You need to the next one which is highest peak there and the Z Point view point is located on the top of this peak.

To go there either you can just take the small route around the fist peak and go to the second peak which has the view point or you can also climb the first peak first and enjoy some tome there and move to the next peak.

This is going to be one of the most amazing experience and if you visit in monsoon or after monsoon you will not want to come back from this place. It is so beautiful and the mist around adds to its beauty.

Hirekolale Lake

This is one the largest lake in Karnataka and offers some good time to its visitors. This is a man made lake and offers a beautiful view of the surroundings. This lake was built to provide the drinking and irrigation water to Chikmaglur and its surrounding areas.

In a way this whole area is photographers paradise, but Hirekolale Lake lake offers some very nice photography options.

This is one of the ancient Rama temples in India and one of the must visit Rama temples. The temple itself is more than 1200 years old, but the Lord Rama and Ma Sita idol is from the time of satyuga.

It is said that Lord Rama gave darshan to Lord Parsurama at this place and it is only temple where Ma Sita is at the right hand side of Lord Rama.

Kodandarama temple at Hiremaglur

Part of this temple was constructed during Chola dynasty while other parts during Hoysala dynasty. So in a way you can see that the temple has architecture signatures of both the dynasties.

It is a very nice temple and must visit if you are in Chikmagalur. The temple itself is not very far from city center and what I would recommend is to get up early and visit the temple during any of the days of your stay there.

Belvadi Temples

Belvadi is a village around 30 Kms from Chikmagalur. This place has one of the finest temples built during Hoysala empire.

It is said that Bheema from Mahabharat times killed Bkasura at this place. Well there is another place in Karnataka called as Kaivara and it also has the same legend. But anyway this place finds its mention in Mahabharata as Ekachakranagara .

The temple name is Shri Veera Narayana temple and was built during Hoysala dynasty. The temple is one of the finest temples of Hoysala times.

Veera Narayana temple Belvadi

There is another temple called as Udhbhava Ganpati temple and this temple is also very near to Shri Veera Narayana temple . The idol of Lord Ganaesha is said to Swyambhu and is growing.

Udhbhava Ganpati temple Belvadi

So this is also an amazing place to visit and this place is very near to halebidu and belur.

Halebidu Temples

Halebidu is famous for Hoysaleswara Temple. This temple again is one of the most popular temples of Hoysala times.

Yagchi dam is a popular tourist destinations in the region. It attracts tourist as it also offer some nice water sports options. You can do some cool water sports there like Jetski, Speed Boat, Banana ride and Kayaking.

The surrounding of the dam is as beautiful as the dam itself.

It will be a nice place to visit with kids. They will definitely enjoy a lot.

Belur Temples

And one of the most important temples of the region and of Hoysala times is the Chennakeshava Temple , also referred to as  Keshava ,  Kesava  or  Vijayanarayana Temple .

It is a huge temple premises built during 12th century at the times of Hoysala empire and a must visit temples in India.

It is said that the temple took more than 100 years to build and almost 3 generations of kings. It was started by the king Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE.

This is one of the finest examples of temple architecture of Hoysala dynasty and South Indian temple architecture.

Where to Stay in Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur has lot of options to stay there. It all depends on what you want to do. Below are some options to choose from

Chikmagalur Resorts

I will recommend booking a hotel if you are there to enjoys some good time in the lap of nature and relax for a couple of days.

Generally these resorts are in Jungle or Coffee estates and offers some good packages on activities like nature walk or off roading experiences. Coffee estate visits etc.

Hence if you are looking for this kind of experience resorts can be the best option.

Chikmagalur Home Stays

I would recommend this if you are travelling with small kids. As home stays offers homely food also many home stays or service apartments have attached kitchen which will help you to lets say boil milk or make some upma, poha , maggi etc for kids as kids kids are not able to eat well outside.

Home stays are also recommended for a long stay like if you are staying for more that 2 – 3 days.

Chikmagalur Hotels

Chikmagalur have tons of options for hotels in all budgets. My recommendation is that you stay near the KSRTC bus stand.

One thing is that if you are not travelling by your own car, being in the city center offers you a good connectivity.

Local Sight seeing cabs at Chikmagalur

Just next to KSRTC bus stand you will find a taxi stand. There you can go and negotiate for a day sight seeing.

Indica / or other hatchback will generally cost you 1300 to 1500 / – and they will take you to 6 to 7 spots.

A sedan like dezire or any other will cost somewhere between 1500 to 1700 / –

A big car like Ertiga will cost around 2000/- to 2500/-

So i think this can also be a good option if you are thinking to book a cab for local sigh seeing.

You can still negotiate the price. And also you can book the cab for near by areas like Yagchi Dam, Bevadi, Belur, Halebidu etc.

So lot of options. With in city attractions you can also take Auto.

Remember one thing. Carry cash as most of these guys prefer cash transactions.

Road-trip to Chikmagalur: Experiences from the Coffee Land & Mullayanagiri- Highest Peak of Karnataka!

About this blog : We traveled to Chikmagalur after Bengaluru unlocked. It was a weekend trip from Bangalore. We stayed in Chikmagalur for 4 days, relaxing in the lap of the Western Ghats dazzling in the warmth of monsoon rains. An apt weekend destination, Chikmagalur is a rewarding road trip from Bengaluru, with plethora of cultural experiences, ancient temples of Belur and Halebidu, sumptuous Benne Dosa doused with butter, aromatic filter coffee and rolling hills covered with a blanket of evergreen forestland! If you are planning a trip to Chikmagalur, read this blog with essential travel tip sand secret finds!

চিকমাগলুর ভ্রমণ কাহিনী

Nights roll into days slowly as we count yet another spin around the Earth’s vertebrate. Homo Sapiens around the world patiently await normalcy. Nature reclaims the sprawling fields. Monsoon clouds roar. White night illuminates the poles and yet there is no “chaser” posing and rejoicing.

Visiting Chikmagalur was our frantic and desperate attempt to break the mundane and get closer to nature. As close as we could.

The second wave in India was nerve-wracking. After a prolonged slumber of a few months, we were slowly coming out of the shell. Bangalore unlocked. First for the weekdays, then for the weekends. The night curfews are still in place? Are the pubs and bars open yet? Are they serving alcohol? Is Coorg allowing tourists? Eager questions floated around. The state buses painted in red eventually hit the Karnataka highways connecting state’s hinterlands to the city that boasts of India’s info-tech prowess, Bangalore.

We were hesitant to move out of Karnataka. What if we get stuck in Goa ? What if Delhi undergoes the same eerie silence once again? What if we end up in a hospital without an oxygen cylinder? The what ifs are a scary zone, forever ruining the travel space. In current circumstances, they are all the more pressing.

Let us go to Chikmagalur!

We chose Chikmagalur. Not because we were keen on Chikmagalur. But the rest of the options were weighing heavier. Coorg, Goa and Pondicherry, the hot favourites of weekend destinations from Bangalore were cut off the list due to accessibility issues.

We had little to zero expectations from Chikmagalur. We knew the small hill town tucked away in the western ghats is famous for lush green coffee trails. But that is more or less the usual story of all of Western Ghats. What more? We searched the world of web and found a few trails and monsoon treks which were again off the list due to the small kid accompanying us. What more? There was no answer but we had no other options. “At least Chikmagalur lets us get away from the bustle of morose Bengaluru.” We said to ourselves. “At least this will be a holiday!” We thought.

Boy oh boy, could we have been more wrong?

S had been to Chikmagalur before. He said it is a place located right at the heart of nature. You do not have much to do there. You do not need much to do here. He stressed the last sentence but I did not quite trust him.

Preparing for a road trip to Chikmagalur from Bangalore

At the wee hours of a monsoon morning, we started from Bengaluru. Driving to Chikmagalur requires you to drive the car for about 5 hours covering 243 km. In between, you come across a few toll gates and pit stops serving Mangalore special fish dishes or Bengaluru famous Empire chains.

The sky was overcast. The roads were long stretched and empty. The birds chirped sitting on the swaying palms dotting country roads. I felt elated as soon as we crossed the city boundary.

We had rented a car from Sawari rentals. The driver, Sai hailed from Hassan, a tier two city located midway between Bengaluru and Chikmagalur. He was blind at the heart of Bengaluru but manoeuvred the car like a trained stallion on NH 75.

We rented an Innova. The middle sit was perfect for a toddler who usually stays protected on a car seat. For 4 days it charged us 14 thousand INR. That included driver’s stay and food and a total commute distance of 900 km. Sai was a nice man who hardly spoke a word and surprisingly did not play music while driving. At the top of Mullayanagiri, he was more eager to click a selfie than the rest of the group! I recommend Sai highly if you are traveling with a family.

The Western Ghats had packed a Surprise for our trip to Chikmagalur!

We say Chikmagalur but we were heading for a holiday at the foothills of Western Ghats. The iconic and ancient bio reserve, a UNESCO heritage sight that stands tall along the west of the Indian peninsula and an important factor for deciding climate factors for the rest of the country, Western Ghats is a minefield of experiences for a keen observer! The snow-capped Himalayas (think Tawang , Sikkim , Ladakh, Kargil and likes) steal the limelight on the gram but monsoon in the Western Ghats elevates the region to an ethereal aura. We had rented a hotel at Chikmagalur. The idea was to explore tourist attractions, a few peaks, plantations and beautiful lakes but head back to the usual comforts of a town by the end of the day.

Chikmagalur is a small town that came to prosperity with the boom of coffee trade. Baba Budan Giri’s Coffee plantation produces export quality coffee. It also happens to be the oldest plantation area in India. It has an interesting story of travel and pilgrimage associated with it. We will come to that later.

A little of it remains for local filter coffee consumption and the rest seamlessly gets shipped internationally. In early days, a few plantations opened their doors for experimental travelers. A family looking to spend the summer in the hills. A writer looking for a peaceful nook. A heartbroken lover seeking to deal with grief in the silence of towering trees. Chikmagalur was the secret gateway for all of them. The city grew. More footsteps followed suit. A few luxury properties bloomed in the dense forests of Chikmagalur. The Serai. Java rain resort. Trivik.

Choosing a hotel in Chikmagalur is easy!

The hotels were beautiful but not prettier than the small town. It had a lot of characters. Two parallel roads run simultaneously with a thriving marketplace. I could walk there all day! A few small cafes. Coffee selling shops. Bakeries. Several silk saree shops. Old buildings with distinct architecture. A number of Canteens for a quick refreshment. Chikmagalur surprised us with the number of eateries. Arabic food was found in plenty.

I have previously stayed at a Rainforest Resort in Madikeri. The Taj Madikeri Resort is one of India’s finest and I remember the couple of days I spent in the absolute splendor of nature’s bounty. Vacations like them are tailor cut for the royalty. For the traveler keen on exploring local society, it is important to find a balance between nature and a semi-urban set up. I recommend you stay at the heart of the Chikmagalur Town if you are traveling on a budget.

We stayed at Hotel Aadrika Chikmagalur. This was a three star property located right at the heart of the city. Here is my honest review.

Pros of staying at Hotel Aadrika:

  • Centrally located. The bus depot is located right next to it. The auto stand is walking distance.
  • Market place is very close. So is a bakery and super markets.
  • Plenty of eating joints are operational outside. Swiggy and Zomato make food delivery a smooth experience.
  • The Service is nice and prompt.
  • Rooms are large enough. Rooms had large TV for Netflix and chill kinda days.
  • Food was decent. They allowed us to heat food for the child.

Cons of staying at Aadrika

  • They charge for water beyond two bottles of mineral bottles.
  • They charge of ice.
  • They charged for cutlery. That was a new thing!
  • Wi-fi was weak.

Overall, if you have your own wifi and carrying disposable plates, Aadrika was a decent hotels. We chose rooms with balcony. One had a view of the main road. the other one was looking at the hill ranges afar. Nothing outstanding though.

You may choose to watch my 4 part long travel vlogs from Chikmagalur. We traveled to Chikmagalur in July end, at the peak of monsoon. These travel vlogs are created in Bengali.

One day, the driver Sai said, most people come here to relax. I could not agree more. If you have seen our travel vlog series from Chikmagalur, you would know. We were mostly inside the hotel for four days. Except for a few hours when we were driving around the town or the hills. It was a nice little gateway with curated experiences that spanned from culture to nature to gourmet delights. I am gonna list out my favourite things to do in Chikmagalur so that when you plan your next trip to the hill station with family, you can add some of these to your Chikmagalur bucket list!

Chikmagalur lies in close proximity to the ancient western ghat hills. The protected bio reserve has a rich history of flora, fauna and cultural ties of the region. Let alone coffee, the hills are often frequented by the Royal Bengal Tigers. Did you know Karnataka has the highest population of Royal Bengal tiger in India (and not the Sundarbans of West Bengal )?

Explore the ancient Hoysala temple clusters of Belud and Halebidu

On the way to Chikmagalur from Karnataka, you will come across the stunning Chennakeshava temple from the days of the Hoysala dynasty. It is located at Belur, a little ahead of the Hassan city. Hassan itself is famous for the Gorur dam on Hemavathi river. The fish dishes we eat in Karnataka are mostly procured from Hassan.

Belur is often referred to as the Varanasi of south India in ancient texts. The Hoysalas ruled the region in the early 11th century and Belur was the state capital. In recent times, the Chennakeshava or Keshava temple of Belur and Hoysaleswara temple of Halebidu have been proposed to be included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites from India.

The massive Gopura of Kesava temple of Belur city can be spotted from a distance. The Hoysala emblem of a lion is very much visible at Belur temple. Chenna Keshava temple is made from soft rocks. The finery and intricate detailing on the temple walls are comparable to that of Ajanta Ellora.

You need at least a couple of hours to study all the details engraved on the walls of these temples. The stories date back to contemporary life, courtroom, reign of the rulers, kings and queens, dancers and mythical depictions of Mahabharat and Puranas! Keep an eye open for the music instruments depicted through the stone work. It is a wonder how these artworks sustained the gnaw of time through thousand years and remained intact!

Pro tip: For a rather unusual experience, head to the Amrutesvara temple located in Shimoga district, closer to the town of Chikmagalur. The ancient Hoysala temple is dedicated to Vishnu. It was established by Amrita Dandanayaka, an army general from the king’s troops.

Explore the Stunning Coffee Trails of ancient Mountains, Chikmagalur

Located in the Malenadu region of Karnataka, the land of rain , Chikmagalur has a perfectly moderate climate for growing coffee! The plantations and estates are found everywhere as you leave the city behind and head towards the hills.

In India, coffee was first cultivated in the hills of Chikmagalur. Precisely the reason why the rolling hills in this part of the Western Ghats are specifically known as “Land of Coffee”.

As we approached the base of Mullayanagiri, we came across sprawling acres of coffee plantation. Estates and plantation workers have claimed the lower parts of the hills, somewhat reminding me of Darjeeling and the road to Kaziranga .

Variants like Arabica and Robusta grow here in tonnes. The finest Coffee of Chikmagalur is exported from India. Price of coffee in Chikmagalur ranges from 200 to 11000 per kg.

To experience the best of coffee trails of Chikmagalur, you need to spend a few nights at an estate. Ideally, choose to stay at one of the old estates, to taste the authentic old world charm of the land of coffee. Most of these estates are family run properties. You may come across a few guns in the living room. This is to scare away the wildlife, I was told.

“Wildlife frequents here?”

Buy Filter Coffee when Traveling in Chikmagalur

Traveling to Chikmagalur and not buying a packet of filter coffee equates to blasphemy! Many brands sell myriad varieties of coffee but try to get your pack from either Jayanthi cafe or Panduranga. Running since the days of India’s independence, Panduranga coffee is a family run business. The shop is centrally located at the market. It is run by a group of efficient local women.

At Panduranga Coffee experience center, I even found a classic filter kapi mug, dazzling in the glitters of gold! Perfect for a discerning traveler to collect as a souvenir. The lower bottom of this set is to help you blend the filter concentrate with that of a thick later of milk.

Glide to the Western Ghats, Especially in Rainy Chikmagalur

It is always a delight to be in the Western Ghats during the monsoon. The Monsoon in the Himalayas could be scary with shooting stones and sudden cloudbursts. Western Ghats are relatively tolerant. The clouds come down to kiss your cheeks. The greens soothe your eyes. The air breeze smells of fresh pollens. Mist and drizzle come hand in hand to romance you on the road. Nameless streams trickle down the tall mountains and the roads get inundated with overflowing fountains.

During the monsoon, taking a bath in these mountain streams is a thing here. In Vagamon , I had seen a few water trucks filling up at these fountains. The higher up you go the purity of water becomes more desirable!

The rainforest on the Western Ghats becomes a living thriving form of a whistling being! It is a world afar, from the world known to mere mortals. I can go on with the praise but the truth is you need to be there to understand! Riding in the mountains of Western Ghats during monsoon feels a lot like a green dream. A little hazy with the mist. A little risky with the constant shower. But fresh and alive! I felt like being one with the world!

The forest being a protected area and home to a number of rare wildlife, visiting Mullayanagiri may require you to cross a few check point. Carry your vaccination certificates if you are fully vaccinated.

Head straight to Mullayanagiri peak

At 6300 ft, Mullayanagiri Peak is the highest hilltop of Karnataka. Standing at the edge of it, your eyes will sweep through vast acres of green rolling hills. Being a soothing climate area, you will always find a cold breeze reaching the top of the hill. However, you can also start the day early and reach the top as soon as the day breaks for a cleaner view. It felt a lot like visiting the sky cable bridge of Langkawi.

Many choose to trek through the mountains, follow the marked trail and reach the top. It is easily accessed by car and then followed by 200 steps. Due to excess mist and absolutely zero visibility, I did not climb further. Men standing a few meters ahead were whistling and blowing yet I could not see a single face. By the way, many rowdy groups of young men were playing music in high volume. I would have shrieked had I had seen their faces!

On the way back, stop at the Siri Cafe and enjoy a soothing cup of coffee and snacks from the comfort of a pretty decked up eatery.

The Shrine of Baba Budan Giri

Baba Budan is a famed Sufi preacher. He is the man who brought the first grain of coffee from his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. The story goes back to the 16th century. He is known to have brought 7 seeds of coffee plants which clearly started a new era of coffee plantations in Karnataka and the rest of India gradually.

Baba Budan giri hill is located at an elevation of 1800 meter. It is known as Dattatray Peeta among the Hindus who visit there as a part of a pilgrimage. Caves and waterfalls adorn the area. However, every 12 years the hills see a spectacular phenomenon of Kurinji flower bloom.

Witness Mesmerizing Sunset at Hirekolale Lake

About 9 km from the center of Chikmagalur, located is a beautiful freshwater lake named Hirecolale. The ride to this lake is a short distance. It is a beautiful ride crossing a number of quint little villages. Life unfolds in myriad colours at the local houses. Try to visit during sunset on a sunny day and find the lake coloured in bright red hues! It is a pleasant walk and much suited for a family holiday.

Head to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary: One of th eoffbeat Tourist Attraction in Chikmagalur

While the way to Mullayanagiri was dotted with marked trail announcing frequent tiger crossing or deer areas, for a close encounter with the elusive tiger, head to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. Safari takes place from morning 6: 30 to 9 am and in the afternoon it starts from 3 pm for 3 hours. Stop at Hebbe (Staircase waterfall) on the way.

The best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to April. In the monsoon months, roads are often inundated with overflowing mountain streams. Do opt for a night stay at the jungle lodges.

Cafe Hopping at Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur has a number of beautiful cafes. I assume the cafe culture in the town slowly grew with more number of tourists flying in to the city.

We chose to visit cafe Agape but that was closed. Cafe Agape had good reviews. We headed for Jayanthi Cafe instead. More than a cafe, Jayanthi cafe was an experiment center elaborating on the history of coffee arriving in India. Despite looking stunningly beautiful, Jayanthi Cafe was extremely slow in providing service. They had interesting stuff like blue berry cheese case and Vietnamese coffee in the menu. It was a hang out zone for the young and enthusiasts of Chikmagalur. I say this by looking at the crowd!

Binge Eat Bene Dosa at Town Canteen, Chikmagalur

In normal circumstances, I would have never paid attention to benne Dosa. Sorry, pardon this naïve Bengali girl. But then Town Canteen Happened to me and the one thing I look for in Bangalore these days is a good meal of Benne dosa. The crispy fried dosa with crunchy outer layer and beautiful dollops of butter dripping through its side is a beauty to behold. the Town Canteen in Chikmagalur is famous for serving the best Benne Dos and aromatic strong Filter coffee for half a century (or more?) and attracts customers from all over the globe! The menu is simple, in fact non existent. It is either masala dosa or crispy dosa with extra bene (butter). You can order for more sambhar and you will be served!

Heaven cometh to your plate!

Things to eat at Chikmagalur

For the four days we were at Chikmagalur, we made it a point to order in on a daily basis for our dinner. We chose to eat Arabic cuisine mostly because the kebabs were lip smacking. they did try to smuggle some of the North Indian Mughlai dishes in the name of Arabic. But they belonged to nowhere yet managed to taste decent. I will list down a few must try food items when you are in Chikmagalur.

  • Order in Mutton biryani from Maharaja restaurant. A variant of donne biryani with bright yellow rice grains, the Dum Biryani of Maharaja restaurant was generous to feed 4 hungry souls for breakfast. need I say more?
  • Do order Mutton Chatpata Kebab from Table Top restaurant. It is one of the finest kebabs of the world. Overwhelmingly good!
  • The Chicken Shawarmas are generally a safe bait if you are a picky eater.
  • The bakery served a beautiful milk cake. But the pasties were horrible.

We traveled to Chikmagalur from Bangalore right after the second lockdown. The rules were a bit relaxed but not entirely loosened. There was makeshift RAT testing camps as you approached the road leading to Mullayanagiri Peak. Shops were closed after 9 pm. Delivery was also scheduled within 9 pm. Night curfew was in place and widely followed. The cafes had locals incoming when we were visiting Chikmagalur. Needless to say, mask and sanitization is being carried on every step of restaurants, hotels, cafes, shops and everywhere.

Have you visited Chikmagalur? Traveling to Chikmagalur proved to me a beautiful surprise where we chanced witness the splendid nature of western Ghats during monsoon. We crossed multiple streams and fountains as ice cold wind caressed our hair! Visit the mountains before the lockdown is eased out completely and thousands rush. The charm of Chikmagalur is reserved for the first few.

The second day of your Chikmagalur itinerary for 2 nights 3 days will take you to Kemmangundi. You will be first taken to the Kalhatti Waterfalls to view its beauty. After that, you will be directly taken to Kemmangundi peak which is situated at a height of 1434 m above sea level. Amazing, right? Also, you will be taken to the Z point which is a vantage point in Kemmangundi. It can be reached by trekking on a steep uphill slope. In addition, the trek would take around 50 minutes. Once you have reached the top, wait for the sunset and capture it in your camera for a lovely memory. Later on, you will be taken to Hebbe Waterfalls which is your last destination in the Chikmagalur itinerary for 2 nights 3 days. Finally, you can return to the hotel and have a sound sleep.

Hebbe Waterfalls

Once you reach Hebbe Waterfalls, you won’t find enough superlatives to describe its stunning beauty. Hebbe Waterfalls is one of the best places to visit in Chikmagalur. It is also quite difficult to reach Hebbe Waterfalls. So, make sure you are well prepared to take some tough routes. Anyways, at the end of the day, all these efforts will be paid once you reach the Hebbe Waterfalls. In addition, people believe that this water contains medical herbs. Also, this place has gained the attention of multiple biologists and scientists. Interesting, right?

If you are physically fit to climb up a steep hill, you should definitely gear up for an adventurous trek to the Z point. This place offers some breathtaking views of nature. In addition, you can also choose to ride on a bike through the rocky terrain to experience the thrill of mountain biking. That’s cool, huh?

11 Best Weekend Getaways From Bangalore, India

O nce a retirement village for the wealthy, known for its year-round spring weather and peaceful ambience, Bangalore (Bengaluru) today has transformed into the Silicon Valley of India. If you live in Bangalore or are visiting Bangalore for work, the best way to rewind after a hectic work-week is to travel away from the bustle of the city.

Good news is that there’s no dearth of weekend getaways from Bangalore. History, UNESCO heritage sites, mountains, wildlife and beaches – name it and you can have it all within a 350 km radius of the city. It’s easy to be spoilt for choices. So based on my personal experience I have selected the top 11 places to visit with kids and family during the weekends.

1. Mysore (145 km from Bangalore)

Just a scenic drive away from Bangalore lies the majestic city of Mysore. Renowned for its grand palaces, vibrant markets, and rich cultural heritage, Mysore offers a delightful blend of history and charm.

You can visit Mysore even on an exhaustive day trip from Bangalore, but I highly recommend slowing down with your family in this lovely city.

Explore the opulent Mysore Palace, followed by the art gallery, Mysore wax museum and a trip to the cinematic Vrindavan gardens in the evening.

On the next day stroll through the bustling Devaraja Market, and visit Chamundi Hills to seek blessings at the Chamundi temple or simply enjoy the views.

If you are visiting with kids, don’t miss out on the Mysore Zoo – one of the best zoological parks in India.

2. Yercaud (215 km from Bangalore)

Yercaud in the local language Tamil means a land round the lake. And that’s what it is – a charming hill station in the Eastern ghats around the sparkling Emerald Lake.

Reach Yercaud by driving through the 32-km loop road famous for its scenic viewpoints and hairpin belts. Embark on leisurely nature walks through fragrant spice plantations, take a boat ride on the serene Emeral Lake, also known as the Yercaud lake and spend time with your kids in Anna Park and rose garden.

With its cool climate and pristine landscapes, Yercaud is the perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore for all seasons.

3. Sakleshpur (220 km from Bangalore)

Tucked away in the verdant Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Known for its lush coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and gushing waterfalls, Sakleshpur offers a picturesque backdrop for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Trek to the historic star-shaped castle – Manjarabad Fort. Unwind amidst the tranquil ambiance of Bisle Ghat, and soak in the beauty of Magajahalli Falls.

With its pristine beauty and tranquil atmosphere, Sakleshpur is the perfect destination for a peaceful weekend escape.

4. Coorg (240 km from Bangalore)

Venture a bit farther from Bangalore, and you’ll discover the enchanting hill station of Coorg, also known as the “Scotland of India.” Famous for its verdant coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and cascading waterfalls, Coorg offers a serene retreat amidst nature’s bounty.

There are two main towns in Coorg where you can plan your stay – Madikeri and Virajpet. Madikeri is the central point for exploring the historic Madikeri Fort, the majestic Abbey Falls and the Omkareshwar Temple. Kids will enjoy spending time in the landscaped park of Raja’s Seat in the evening.

From Virajpet you can visit the more offbeat places like Talacauvery and Iruppu Falls.A road trip to Coorg from Bangalore will take you through the most scenic roads of Western Ghats. You can also reach Madikeri by overnight bus from Bangalore.

5. Chikmagalur (250 km from Bangalore)

Visit the land of coffee, the place that claims to have introduced coffee to India – Chikmagalur. Whether you are visiting with kids or elderly parents, or just with a group of young adventurous people, Chikmagalur has something for everyone.

Chikmagalur is best experienced in a homestay hosted by the owners of small coffee estates in the region. They will take you on a tour of their coffee estate and blow you away with their hospitality.

You can book a jeep for your sightseeing adventure visiting the Jhari Falls, Baba Budan giri hills, lakes, and trekking spots.

Kids will enjoy visiting Mahatma Gandhi Park with a short toy train joyride in the hills.

You can reach Chikmagalur from Bangalore by overnight buses that ply daily from Bangalore.

6. Ooty (270 km from Bangalore)

Fondly referred to as the “Queen of Hills,” Ooty captivates visitors with its rolling tea estates, picturesque gardens, and cool climate.

Ooty is famous for its scenic tea gardens, the floral and faunal diversity and the Nilgiri Mountain railways – a UNESCO world heritage site.

Take a scenic ride on Nilgiri Toy train, stroll through the vibrant flower gardens of Government Botanical Garden, or embark on a boat ride across the serene Ooty Lake.

You can reach Ooty by overnight bus, train or by driving.

7. Shimoga (280 km from Bangalore)

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Shimoga, also known as the “Gateway to the Western Ghats.”

Drive straight to the majestic Jog Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in India and admire the poetic beauty of nature. The trek through the dense forests of Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary or book a safari with kids.

Then you can visit the 1000-year-old Kelladi temple and watch sunset at the Mattur Lake. Next day drive to the Agumbe rain forest or trek to the Kabbaledurga fort.

The main highlight of Shimoga however, are the hidden lakes that are not commercialized for any tourist activity. That’s why the best way to reach Shimoga is by a road trip so that you can stop at these obscure lakes and do nothing but just stand and stare.

8. Wayanad (280 km from Bangalore)

Venture into the pristine wilderness of Wayanad, a picturesque district nestled amidst the Western Ghats in Kerala. Explore the lush tea estates of Vythiri, trek to the stunning viewpoints of Chembra Peak, or immerse yourself in the serene ambiance of Pookode Lake.

If you love wildlife safaris, then plan your stay in Sultan Bathery. Take a safari through Wayanad Tiger reserve – one of the best places in India to spot tigers and wild elephants. Then you can visit the prehistoric Edakkal caves for a unique experience.

There are regular buses to Wayanad by which you can reach Wayanad in the early morning on Saturday. You can prebook a car from hotel for pickup and early check-in.

9. Pondicherry (315 km from Bangalore)

Experience a blend of French colonial charm and Indian culture in the coastal town of Pondicherry. This erstwhile French colony of India still retains some of the French vibes that have perfectly blended with the cosmopolitan new India.

Stroll on the beautiful Pondicherry promenade, explore the historic Bharthi Park, the opulent Botanical Garden and the several French-era churches of Pondicherry. A walking or cycling tour of the white town of Pondicherry will transport you to France.

While in Pondicherry don’t miss a trip to Auroville – an experimental global city across the beautiful Auroville beach. Then sail to Paradise Island for the most spectacular views and beach activities.

The best way to reach Pondicherry is by an overnight train to the Puducherry station. It’s also a very smooth ride from Bangalore to Pondicherry if you manage to leave early morning before the infamous Bangalore traffic kicks in.

10. Hampi (340 km from Bangalore)

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Watch the ruins of Vijayanagara empire come back to life infront of your eyes in this open-air museum.

Marvel at the architectural wonders of Hampi Bazaar, climb the iconic Matanga Hill for panoramic views, or witness the breathtaking sunset during a coracle ride in the Tungabhadra River.

On the next day drive to North Hampi to see the iconic stone chariot of Vittala Temple. It is one of the most famous monuments of India that often feature on the currency notes. Climb the Monkey Temple and engage in live music and merriment in the Hippie island.

If you are visiting with kids, skip Hippie island since the environment may not be particularly kid-friendly. Instead travel to Daroji wildlife sanctuary to spot the Indian sloth bear and for bird-watching.

11. Mahabalipuram (350 km from Bangalore)

This is another UNESCO heritage site that records the artistic and engineering genius of the 7 th- century Pallava dynasty of India. Embark on a journey to the historic town of Mahabalipuram, renowned for its magnificent rock-cut temples and sculptures. What’s more, it’s on the shore of the Bay of Bengal!

The magnificent Shore Temple, the intricately carved five monolithic structures called Pancha Rathas, or the bas-relief architectural marvel called Arjuna’s penance – each monument is steeped in glorious history.

With its rich cultural heritage and stunning coastal landscapes, Mahabalipuram offers a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty for a memorable weekend getaway.

To reach Mahabalipuram, take a train or flight to Chennai and then book a short ride to Mahabalipuram. You can also drive all the way to Mahabalipuram from Bangalore.

A Few Tips on Choosing Your Destination

If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to just relax in the lap of nature, book a luxury resort in Coorg or Chikmagalur. Surprisingly these are also the best places for adventure with friends offering trekking trails and whitewater rafting.

If you are looking for an exhaustive sightseeing tour of historic gems go for Hampi or Mahabalipuram. If you are visiting with kids, I highly recommend Yercaud, Ooty, and Pondicherry because your itinerary can be packed with kid-friendly activities.

If you love shopping, then Mysore is a paradise for you, while if you want to go off-the-beaten-track, choose Shimoga.

Opt for the high-altitude hill stations in summer for respite from the rising mercury levels. I recommend Yercaud, Kodaikanal and Ooty.

Monsoon is the best time for the Western Ghats, also known as the monsoon ghats. This is the time to visit places like Chikmagalur, Coorg and Wayanad. The mountains come alive with waterfalls in full force and lush greenery all around.

I recommend planning trips to the beaches like Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, and Bekal in the winter in India.

That’s a wrap to the post. I am sure you will enjoy these places for your weekend trips from Bangalore.

Road trip to Chikmagalur

Photo of Meghashree

A friend was coming down from Hyderabad and together 4 of us started from Bangalore . Since we all were working in Infosys, we decided to stop over in Mysore campus for a day before travelling to Chikmagalur home stay.

We started from Bangalore around 8.30 and reached Infosys Mysore around 12 with a break of 45-50 mins for breakfast at the Kamath on Mys-Bng highway. If you are travelling on this route, you must stop and taste some authentic delicious Kannada food before you continue on your journey.

However, it may sometimes take more time as the crowd on weekends is huge. After reaching Mysore campus, the remaining day went in exploring the new facilities in campus and recalling our training days together. Quite famished, we had dinner and slept early to begin the next day early.

Athithi Homestay

Day 2 : After having our breakfast in campus, we started for Chickmagalur around 8.30 am (So much for plans of starting early) and reached Belur around 10.30. Between the twin cities of Belur and Halebidu we chose to visit belur as it was on the way to our destination while Halebidu was on the opposite direction.

We reached Athithi homestay around 1 pm, just in time for some brilliant malnad food cooked by the resident cook Guru. The homestay also has a lake nearby which is worth a visit on a lazy cloudy afternoon. It can be reached by walk or by driving down.

The homestay also had facilities to play indoor games and TV. The evening went in gobbling up some delicious snacks made on request while carom competitions were held. The plans to have a campfire were not successful as rain gods paid us generous visit that night.

Mullayanagiri

Day 3 : We had some filling breakfast in the open dining area of the homestay and checked out. Our plan was to cover Mullayanagiri and one of the nearby waterfalls before starting our way back to Bangalore. The most stunning part of Mullayanagiri is to drive uphill. The road gets narrower as the height increases.

If one is not a very skilled driver, it is not advisable to drive here. The fog thickens, there are plenty of miniature water falls on the way: It is breathtakingly beautiful. Almost at the top, there is no more way to go by vehicle but there a stone steps to reach the temple at the peak. Our efforts of reaching the peak were thwarted by the car getting locked with the key inside (Resolution for this in the tips section).

Around 1.30-2.00 pm we started back to Bangalore via Hassan and reached at 6.00 pm.

Why is it special?

- A road trip is always fun when taken with long time friends. Gives plenty of rooms for all the reminiscing, bickering, shouting, singing, sleeping and stopping whenever and wherever you want.

- First time we went in a self-driven rented car which came with good enough technological assistance to find our way.

- There is always a surprise element, something that doesn’t go as planned, which becomes a part of your memory eternally – in our case, it was getting locked out of the car in cold wind and rain.

- Book your rooms in home stays or hotels in advance. There are plenty of estates/farm houses converted to home stays, however since the location is a hotspot for weekend trips, most of the places get booked fully. Look for reviews in tripadvisor.com, call the owners and talk to them to understand what to expect there – Pick the one that suits your budget as is nearer to the town.

- We stayed one night in Infosys, which saved us some money. However, pick one place where the rates are per room than per person to reduce costs.

- During monsoon it is not advisable to go deep into the Western Ghats as there are bound to be heavy rains and landslides. Pick a home stay that isn’t too deep into the woods.

- Take extra blankets if you have space in your vehicle to carry them. The blankets provided by the host will not be enough against the cold to those who are not accustomed to it.

- Preferably take sturdier vehicles like the Scorpio than hatchbacks. The terrain changes almost immediately into steep roads.

- If inexperienced, hire a driver and enjoy the journey. DO NOT take the risk of experimenting. An inch is all that is required to cause accidents on the hill.

- Zoom cars proved to be pretty economical and suitable for 4 of us. They cover the fuel charges too in their tariff and are always reachable for assistance (unless you get locked out in a place where the signal is feeble for them to be contacted). Make sure to follow their guidelines. They are pretty strict about any kind violations like over speeding or crossing kms/per day limits.

- If you get locked out without enough signal to contact for assistance, try to open the lever near the rare windows. Check on youtube to know more details on it. They make enough space for one person to sneak in( In vehicles like scorpio that is). But if all means fail, break open the smallest and nearest window. However, it is utmost advisable to not get locked out in the first place. :P

- A good camera, a patient photographer friend and some good music CD’s never hurt anyone. Make sure to carry at least the first and the last along.
