Hit Me Hard and Soft

Billie Eilish is a master of deception.

Her new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft” (out Friday), starts off exactly as you’d expect: with soft vocals layered over an acoustic guitar on “Skinny,” a rumination on the toxicity of beauty standards with Gen Z-bait lyrics like, “The internet is hungry for the meanest kind of funny.”

But in its final seconds, the song takes an orchestral turn and then detonates into “Lunch,” a thumping lesbian anthem with a bassline so slinky it feels like “Bad Guy” on steroids. It’s the most deliciously perverted entry in Eilish’s catalog to date as the newly out superstar lustfully purrs with an insatiable swagger, “I could eat that girl for lunch / As she dances on my tongue / Tastes like she might be the one.”

Billie Eilish

Eilish’s sonic sleight of hand comes to play throughout “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” which does exactly as its title suggests: wavers between a sleek understatedness and total sensory overload.

Across an almost perfect 10 tracks (sorry, but “Bittersuite” adds nothing), the 22-year-old critical darling contorts herself to toy with tempos and genres as diverse as house and reggae — and somehow it works, thanks in large part to her brother and collaborator Finneas O’Connell’s mind-blowing production, which is at an all-time high here.

“The Greatest” builds upon the statement-making transition in the siblings’ 2021 hit “Happier Than Ever,” again crescendoing from the subtle plucks of a guitar to a full-band headbanger. A heartbroken Eilish hushes the claims that she only whispers in her songs by belting out, “I loved you, and I still do / Just wanted passion from you / Just wanted what I gave you.”

“Chihiro” swells out of left field, too, with a muted trance beat that locks listeners in the claustrophobic bathroom of a pulsating nightclub. (Fittingly, Eilish repeats, “Open up the door” at various points in the track. Even she’s begging to hit the dance floor.)

“The Diner” is similarly all-consuming, eerily told from the point of view of a celebrity-obsessed stalker who begs, “Oh, please don’t call the cops / They’ll make me stop / And I just wanna talk.” Its rhythm lurks like a detective in a ’40s noir, concluding with an ominous threat: “I saw you in the car with someone else and couldn’t sleep / If somethin’ happens to him, you can bet that it was me.”

Eilish has always been a storyteller after all, one who isn’t afraid to twist an adage into something macabre.

Finneas O'Connell and Billie Eilish holding their Golden Globe Awards.

On the ’90s-influenced “Birds of a Feather,” which sounds quite like Drake’s “Passionfruit,” her take on “’til death do us part” is more along the lines of, “I want you to stay / ‘Til I’m in the grave / ‘Til I rot away, dead and buried / ‘Til I’m in the casket you carry.” Only she could make that sound romantic.

And then there’s “L’amour de Ma Vie,” a soft-rock number on which Eilish puts aside her signature head voice to let her underused deep tone take center stage. “I told you a lie / When I said you were the love of my life,” she sings before yet another 180, with “Blinding Lights” -style synths and distortion taking over the back half.

“Hit Me” is classic Billie, an artist who has been her unapologetic self since the 2015 release of her debut single, “Ocean Eyes.” Nearly a decade later, she’s delivered the boundary-pushing record she was born to make.

A fresh start … Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour.

Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour review – one of them has a formidable mind, but which?

The odd couple journey through Venice, Florence and Rome in the hope of enlightenment – and mending their broken hearts in the Italian sun. Expect to have your preconceptions challenged …

I n a country where so much of society is still bisected along class lines, many have a very particular image of a clever person – and it’s roughly Stephen Fry. A grand-seeming Oxbridge-educated man with a posh accent and an interest in art and opera, who can recite passages of classic literature. Rob Rinder , the criminal barrister, broadcaster and host of Judge Rinder, fits well into this mould and loves all things “high culture” and intellectual pursuits. He is, as his co-host Rylan Clark says, “one of the cleverest blokes I know”. Meanwhile, Rinder says Clark “doesn’t know his arts from his elbow”. However, over the course of the three episodes of Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour, Clark emerges as the brilliant mind, with levels of intelligence, wit and profundity that may have been overlooked because there remains a perception of what a clever person is like.

The pair position themselves as an odd couple from different sides of the tracks, being good mates, both going through “painful divorces” who, despite their divergent interests, have decided to embark on a journey that represents a fresh start. The series follows them through the “hedonism” of Venice, the Renaissance feast that is Florence and the baroque glory of Rome, replicating a journey made by Lord Byron, 200 years after his death at just 36. But as the series reminds us, this was not just a journey that Byron made: many of the “poshos” of the era would journey to Italy as a rite of passage, a form of cultural education to establish themselves as erudite individuals who understood art, history and the ways of the world.

We first see Rinder in Venice aboard a gondola, wanting to take in the historical traditions of the city. Clark is in a glitzy speedboat and is a little intimidated by all the art and opera ahead. But while Rinder is moved and fascinated by the galleries, concerts and archaeology of this and the other two cities, his response comes across as a little more shallow than Clark’s reflections. When discussing Caravaggio, castratos or the Colosseum, Rinder always seems to give the prototypical clever-person answer, while Clark connects to his surroundings on a molecular level, seeing in ancient ruins existential questions that connect to his own mortality and desire to achieve greatness.

Clark also brings a gorgeous vulnerability to the screen. Not only is he dealing with heartbreak, but also with the lingering insecurity of having been an object of ridicule in his early career. It’s a truly remarkable journey that he has been on, having first come to public attention as the runner-up on Signed By Katie Price before being labelled a “joke act” on The X Factor and finally hitting his stride as a presenter on This Morning, Big Brother’s Bit on the Side and Ready Steady Cook. But even if he is best known for being a larger-than-life camp icon who pokes fun at himself, it has become clear over the years – and is further illuminated by this programme – that Clark is an extremely smart and talented man who should not be underestimated.

The relationship between Rinder and Clark proves surprisingly sweet and tender, too. Although they often fall back into the clever one/silly one shtick, they seem to hold each other in equally high regard. Clark has little ego around the gaps in his knowledge and soaks up what Rinder tells him about the historical significance of the places that they visit. Rinder also gazes at him adoringly when Clark interprets what the Botticellis hanging in the Uffizi or the Venetian mask worn during the carnival symbolise to him.

While Rinder and Clark seem quite transformed by their journey and time together, ending the trip with their hearts a little less broken and open to the possibility of finding love again (albeit with an iron-clad prenup), what’s most interesting about the programme is how it challenges our perception of Clark. For centuries, the Grand Tour was undertaken by those who more closely resembled Rinder, people with the right sort of class and education, unlike Clark, who was a “ginger kid from a council flat in Stepney Green”. But it is lovely to behold where that kid has ended up, see his formidable mind absorb the glories of the journey Byron once embarked on and watch his confidence bloom in the Italian sunshine.

Fresh off visit to Trump trial, Matt Gaetz takes to Twitter to echo Proud Boys shoutout

obaja tour review

Rep. Matt Gaetz , R-Fla., backed Donald Trump at his hush money trial Thursday, and echoed the former president's infamous 2020 presidential debate line calling on the notorious Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by."

Trump is on week five of his trial for allegedly falsifying business records to hide campaign finance violations in a 2016 hush money payment issued to porn star Stormy Daniels . Republicans have lined up behind Trump throughout the week, blasting the judge, the witnesses and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, some of which Trump is barred from doing under a gag order.

Gaetz had plenty of critiques to share outside the courthouse, but took it a step further on X, posting a photo of him behind the former president with the caption, "Standing back and standing by, Mr. President."

Trump trial breaking news: Latest updates as Michael Cohen returns as hush money witness

Does Gaetz align with Proud Boys? 'The tweet speaks for itself'

The line called to mind Trump's failure to condemn white supremacist groups that grew during his presidency at a 2020 presidential debate. Asked about the Proud Boys, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as a hate group, Trump said, "Proud Boys – stand back and stand by. But I'll tell you what, somebody's got to do something about antifa and the left."

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Megan Squire, a professor of computer science at Elon University in North Carolina who studies online extremism, told USA TODAY at the time that the group's social media channels showed they interpreted Trump's words as encouragement.

"They were extremely excited by what he said," Squire said. "They felt validated."

When asked if Gaetz aligns with the Proud Boys as the post suggests, a spokesperson from his office said, "the tweet speaks for itself."

Regarding Gaetz's reference to the former president as "Mr. President," the spokesperson noted that he refers to Trump as "President Trump" out of respect, and does the same for President Joe Biden. Gaetz objected to the certification of Biden's Electoral College victory during the official count in 2021.

Several Proud Boys members since sentenced to prison

The Proud Boys, who describe themselves as “a pro-Western fraternal organization for men," have a history of violence, including attacking a group of antifascist protesters in Manhattan in 2018.

Several Proud Boys members are now in prison after helping to lead the mobs of people who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, while Congress was counting Electoral College votes to certify the election, including some sentenced by a Trump-appointed judge. Some are serving times ranging from 10-to-20 years.

Former Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio , was sentenced to 22 years, even though he was not in Washington, D.C. when mobs breached the Capitol. He was convicted of six crimes including seditious conspiracy, interference with law enforcement and aiding destruction of government property, after prosecutors argued that he was a leader in the plot.

More than 1,000 people have been charged with crimes related to Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump himself has been indicted on four federal counts for allegedly conspiring to steal the 2020 election in relation to his actions on Jan. 6, 2021 .

Matt Gaetz joins onslaught of Republicans getting around Trump trial gag order

Gaetz joined a lengthy lineup of Republicans who have made appearances at the Manhattan courthouse during Trump's hush money trial.

“We’re here of our own volition because there are things that we can say that Trump is unjustly not allowed to say,” Gaetz said at a press conference outside on a Thursday morning break. “This is a corrupt judge. These are corrupted witnesses. This is a corrupt prosecution that belies any sense of the facts or the law. We’re going to keep speaking out against this.”

Trump is under a gag order that prevents him from speaking about the witnesses, jury, prosecutors and family members of the court. Over the last few days, vice president potentials, former presidential candidates and other Republican heavy hitters have stepped in, criticizing former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, Judge Juan Merchan and his daughter.

At least one Republican has criticized his colleagues for their courthouse appearances; Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah , told reporters Wednesday, "I think it’s a little demeaning to show up in front of a courthouse, particularly one where we’re talking about an allegation of paying a porn star."

Who is Matt Gaetz?

Gaetz is a far-right congressman representing the western-most part of the Florida Panhandle, including Pensacola.

He led the charge to oust former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy , bringing the motion to vacate and organizing a small group of Republicans to join him in going against members of his own party. A few of those lawmakers who voted out McCarthy also joined Gaetz in bashing the hush money trial Thursday, including Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz. and Rep. Bob Good, R-Va.

Getting McCarthy ousted elevated Gaetz's potential for higher office like governor of Florida

But McCarthy said in April that Gaetz ousted him to stop an ethics complaint about an alleged sexual encounter between Gaetz and a 17-year-old. Gaetz has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, and the Department of Justice dropped its investigation in February of 2023 .

Derek Hough continues tour with wife Haley Erbert after her recovery

Haley erbert danced on tour in salt lake city with husband derek hough after having a craniotomy in december 2023.

obaja tour review

By Chase Martin

Derek Hough’s tour, “Symphony of Dance,” came to Salt Lake City on May 15 after it was postponed in December 2023. Haley Erbert, Hough’s wife and a fellow dancer, underwent an “emergency craniotomy,” according to Hough’s Instagram post at the time.

This happened only a few months after their marriage in August.

Five months after her diagnosis, and after undergoing brain surgery, Erbert appears to have made a full recovery, dancing onstage with Hough at Eccles Theater.

The only noticeable difference was her short hair, which Hough remarked during the performance was a “cute haircut.”

Near the end of the performance, Erbert expressed her gratitude for everyone’s continued support, breaking down in tears. “Thank you guys so so much. For not only just being with us tonight, but being with us for the past five months.”

“It’s been a crazy time,” Erbert continued. “Thank you guys for your thoughts, your energy, your love, your support, your prayers. I truly believe that’s why I’m here today, so thank you guys.”

Hough described how the continuation of this tour was a result of Erbert’s effort. While rehearsing, he said he had “forgotten all the steps.” But according to him, Haley said, “It’s okay. I’ll show you” and lead him through the routine.

Why did Haley Erbert have a craniotomy?

As previously reported by the Deseret News , Erbert became “disoriented” after a performance on Dec. 6, 2023. She was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a cranial hematoma, which is caused when a blood vessel bursts in the brain and can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

The procedure involved removing a piece of Erbert’s skull, which was replaced in a follow up surgery with an implant.

In the initial post Hough made to inform fans of what was going on, he stated that she was “in stable condition.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Derek Hough (@derekhough)

In an update on Instagram after the surgery, Hough announced, “Hayley is doing well. Her recovery process has been nothing short of a miracle.”

Two months later, in February, Hough and Erbert posted another update video to Instagram . Erbert said, “I’m doing so much better every single day, like truly there is so much progress every day, and I’m so grateful for that.”

Will Haley Erbert be able to dance again?

In April, Hough and Erbert announced that they would be continuing the “Symphony of Dance” tour after its postponement due to Erbert’s illness.

Erbert stated in an Instagram post, “My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more.”

The video accompanying the post showed her rehearsing without any issues.

On April 14, they began the renewal of their tour, per their website .

A viral TikTok from one of their performances on the continuation of the tour showed Erbert and the rest of the performers being given a standing ovation. Erbert becomes emotional as the other performers, including Hough, step back to give her the center stage.

@jess_on_mainstreet She is such an inspirational woman❤️ @Derek Hough @Hayley Erbert Hough #derekhough #hayleyerbert #derekhoughsymphonyofdance #symphonyofdance #dancing #dancingwiththestars #derekhoughlivetour #dance #emotional #dancer #insprational #emotional #dwts ♬ original sound - Jess🩵

In their Salt Lake City show, she participated in almost every song, presumably taking on a role just as intense as before her illness.

Derek Hough’s ‘Symphony of Dance’ review

The performance was an inspirational and stunning display of dance. The passion and dedication of all the dancers was on full display. Hough’s magnetic and charismatic personality flowed throughout the performance, from his dancing to his MC-ing.

He encouraged audience participation throughout by having them cheer loudly, by running through the crowd to high-five people and taking volunteers on stage.

Each song was accompanied with a costume change, of which the performers were able to pull of surprisingly quickly.

Hough, along with dancing, also sang and played instruments such as electric and acoustic guitar.

One of the stand out moments was a rendition of the first dance Hough and Erbert performed at their wedding. It was a heartwarming moment, especially taken in context with all their recent struggles.

Before performing their wedding dance, Hough said, “It’s crazy to imagine that going from having our first dance with my wife, just a few months later not knowing if I would have the chance to dance with her again. And that’s why this song is so much more special now and has such a deeper meaning, because it’s not just our first dance, but it’s really our second chance at a new life together.”

Toward the end, Hough performed one of the first dances he choreographed for the show. It was dedicated to the late Len Goodman, who passed in 2023, and was a judge on “Dancing with the Stars” with Hough.

Hough described the dance as, “No riff-raff. No messing about. Just a clean simple waltz.” He hoped it was good enough to warrant a score of at least seven from Goodman.

A voiceover narration during the dance summed up the theme of the performance, saying, “Individually your life are the notes of an intricate melody, each one unique and special, sharing our gifts and music with the world. But when we come together, we become something far greater than the sum of our parts.”

“It’s when we unite together in harmony, we create a melody that can inspire the world,” the narrator continued. “We become a symphony.”

Kacey Musgraves at the Roundhouse review: mystical country pop at its finest

F rom the moment the layered, harmonic chorus of birdsong played before the opening of Cardinal, the first song on the setlist and the first on Musgraves’ sixth studio album Deeper Well, Kacey Musgraves had the audience captivated.

With minimal to no phones in sight and nothing but the measured, soul-bearing melodies of sweet, mystical country pop to bless the ears of Roundhouse attendees, the singer and her band immediately swept Camden into a nostalgic Texas wonderland.

Having begun her career in the early 2000s, Musgraves has learned to be comfortable on stage. So comfortable, in fact, that it felt as though we were in a bar somewhere in her hometown listening to witty tales about her musical mystery rides and failed love affairs. She moved with a casual rhythm which says she’s comfortable in herself and her music, and this in turn elevated her performance tenfold.

Musgraves even took the time to recount the disastrous early days of the Deeper Well (or “Deeper Unwell”, as she puts it) UK tour, where she and other members of the band fell ill with some kind of food poisoning. Grace and decorum be damned, Musgraves unabashedly declared that she indeed “S**t herself” on the Aran Islands during an “Eat Pray Love single girl” solo trip.

It’s safe to say that this bizarre tale, and the subsequent chiming in of fellow infected bandmembers who caught the bug on her return, served as a strange break in the expertly curated and wonderfully smooth setlist.

Yet somehow, it only worked to bring Musgraves and her ever-loyal audience closer. Her songs are soul-bearing, and it’s a relief to know that Musgraves is just as open when ad-libbing among friends and fans.

There’s an innate old-world revival feeling to the singer’s stripped-back tour, accentuated by the casual sways of her extremely cohesive musical collective (the vast majority of which happened to be wearing near identical tailored suits) and the Ohio Star quilt block insignia illuminated behind the performers.

Perhaps the only incongruity was her extra-long bangs and Peter Pan collared dress, which rather resembled a look by the famed, fictional Rachel Berry of Glee.

Musgraves also took the irony of her country routes and modern sensibility on the chin, stating “It’s real fun getting banned from country radio,” before seamlessly moving into Follow Your Arrow – a song about self-acceptance and inclusion.

By the latter half of the set, which included songs from her Golden Hour and Star-Crossed albums, the audience had been set alight with Musgraves’ ephemeral pop-country excellence.

The singer’s voice sounds as honeyed, clear and impossibly smooth as ever which, paired with her story-filled tangents and “mother is mothering” response to hollering fans, imbues Musgraves with the talent, elegance and humour of a true country star.

It’s safe to say that the singer-songwriter is only getting better and better. While there were certainly very lively moments where the odd cowboy hat toting fan whooped and screamed for an older song, Musgraves’ new album and its live performance represents her maturity as a musician and her inherently playful, pop-loving self.

When first greeting the audience, Musgraves gave the audience a compliment, “Y’all are looking spicey like you came here to party, but also heal” – which wonderfully sums up the entire, 24-song country pop extravaganza.

Harry and Meghan wrap up a very royal looking tour of Nigeria

By Holly Williams

May 13, 2024 / 11:10 AM EDT / CBS News

London — Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, wrapped up a three-day tour of Nigeria on Sunday that saw the U.S.-based couple use their celebrity to highlight some of the causes they care most about.

Harry played a game of sitting volleyball with disabled athletes — all of them Nigerian army veterans.

Nigeria has expressed interest in hosting the Invictus Games, the charity sporting event for wounded soldiers founded a decade ago by the duke.

Meghan co-hosted a women's leadership event where she referenced her Nigerian ancestry for the second time during the trip.

"Thank you very much for how graciously you've all been welcoming my husband and I to this country," she said, pausing before adding, "my country."

The simple two words were met with cheering and applause.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Visit Nigeria - Day 2

Predictably, given the couple's longstanding enmity with the U.K.'s tabloid media, some British newspapers pointed out that Harry and Meghan's visit to Nigeria looked very much like a royal tour - including the duke's inspection of a Nigerian military guard of honor — despite them having left behind their roles as "working royals ."

At one point Harry stood to attention for his country's national anthem, God Save the King, just days after the couple's press team said King Charles III couldn't carve out time to meet his youngest son during Harry's visit to London earlier this month.

The Nigeria trip seemed to be a success for the Sussexes, at least for the people Harry and Meghan came to visit. Nigerians welcomed them with open arms.

"On camera they are good, but in person, holy moly!" said Malaika Gyang-gyang, a student at the Lightway Academy in Abuja, which the duke and duchess visited as soon as they arrived on Friday.

It’s hard to think of an album with a more confusing backstory than Childish Gambino -aka- Donald Glover ’s “Atavista,” which was first released stealthily — with little notice, promotion, cover artwork or even song titles — into a dark world four years ago, in the early days of the pandemic, and originally named after its grim release date, “3.15.20.”

How to buy maroon 5 tickets: dates and prices compared for 2024 concert tour.

Maroon 5's Las Vegas residency kicks off this month, and tickets are going fast as the band's concert dates fill up. In addition to securing passes for their festival appearances this year, we've broken down how to buy Maroon 5 tickets for their concert tour below.

Originally formed in 1994, Maroon 5 is celebrating 30 years together as they kick off their Las Vegas residency at the Dolby Live at Park MGM. The new tour, referred to in shorthand as "M5LV: The Las Vegas Residency," is an extension of their 16-show residency last year. After their run in Las Vegas last year proved to be a huge hit, the group led by Adam Levine is back for another 16 shows at the Dolby Live theater this year.

Maroon 5's residency begins on May 17, and will feature performances in May, June, September, and October. The Dolby Live theater isn't the only location that Maroon 5 is performing at this year; the pop rock band is set to make festival appearances and headline other venues around North America throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

We've got you covered if you're looking for how to get tickets to Maroon 5's concert tour. Here's our breakdown of Maroon 5's residency and tour schedule, purchasing details, and original and resale ticket price comparisons. You can also browse ticket specifics at your leisure on StubHub and Vivid Seats .

Maroon 5 has 16 concert dates lined up for their Las Vegas residency in 2024. Their shows at the Dolby Live begin on May 17 before the band takes their final bow of the tour on October 12. Additionally, Maroon 5 has nine concerts scheduled for their 2024 tour in various cities around the country.

All concert times are listed in local time zones.

You can buy standard original tickets for Maroon 5's 2024 concert tour on Ticketmaster and Live Nation. Both their Las Vegas residency and outside tour dates still have options available. However, the quantity of remaining original tickets continues to decrease as each concert date approaches.

Passes to see Maroon 5 in their 2024 concert series are also available for purchase through verified ticket resale sites such as StubHub and Vivid Seats . You may find better luck with more variety in seating availability through these resale vendors.

Maroon 5 tickets for their 2024 concerts are generally less expensive than similar big-name acts on tour this year. Of course, original ticket prices for Maroon 5's 2024 tour vary depending on date, location, and demand for each show.

The cheapest standard original tickets for Maroon 5's Las Vegas residency dates begin at $75, while the lowest available prices for their shows elsewhere start at $40 for the band's Clarkston, Michigan concert on June 21. Generally, resale ticket prices for Maroon 5's 2024 shows are comparable to or cheaper than the costs of standard original tickets.

On StubHub, the least expensive tickets for Maroon 5 range from $28 for the group's Holmdel, New Jersey show on June 29 to $116 for their Springfield, Massachusetts concert on July 1. Vivid Seats offers a similar price range, with the band's cheapest ticket prices starting from $27 at their Holmdel show to $114 for Maroon 5's Springfield concert on the same dates.

These resale sites have comparable prices for Maroon 5's Las Vegas residency shows, as well. The starting prices for the band's Las Vegas concerts range between $42 on May 17 and $92 on June 1 on StubHub, or from $41 on October 4 to $85 on June 1 on Vivid Seats.

Maroon 5 is also offering VIP packages for their 2024 concert tour. Their Las Vegas residency dates offer a Premium VIP Banquet package beginning at $495, but these tickets must be sold in multiples of two. The band also offers three VIP packages for their tour dates elsewhere: Diamond Premium Seat (starting at $685), Gold Premium Seat (starting at $435), and Silver Hot Seat (starting at $410).

Who is opening for Maroon 5's tour?

Maroon 5 doesn't have any opening acts for their Las Vegas residency concert dates. But, the band will be joined by Maren Morris for their non-festival touring dates outside Las Vegas in 2024.

Maroon 5 hasn't announced an international leg for their 2024 tour. However, the band has two shows already confirmed for Canada in 2024: June 25 in Toronto, Ontario and July 7 in Ottawa, Ontario.
