Train des Merveilles: Wonderful Day Trip from Nice, France

Train des Merveilles: Wonderful Day Trip from Nice, France

Recently I went to Nice for 4 days . I already enjoyed an excellent Food Tour around Nice and climbed N ice’s Castle Hill, but I also wanted to explore more of the surrounding area. I googled a lot and discovered there are 2-day trips from Nice by train . As you know, I love train journeys , so I wanted to take one. I researched and found there is the train des Merveilles, from Nice to Tende. And there is the Train des Pignes , from Nice to Digne.

For more day trips from Nice and things to do in Nice, check out the best of Nice from Hannah at Eat Sleep Breath Travel.

It was a difficult decision, but I opted for the train des Merveilles. I researched the train schedule for 2016 and set up a time scheme for where to get off the train and which towns to explore. I’ll tell you all about my day trip from Nice on the train des Merveilles.

I paid for everything in full myself. I was not paid or sponsored. All my opinions and experiences are my own.

Here you can find the most recent  train schedule for Ligne 05 Nice- Breil- Cuno.

I researched a lot before I went, but the official website from Tende does not provide you well enough information and things were a bit confusing.

Train des Merveilles from Nice

The Tren des Merveilles or the train of wonders is a normal train route between Nice and Italy. It is operated by SNCF and will take you in two hours to the small town of Tende, right before the border with Italy.

In high season, the 9.30 am train has live commentary in English . The guide will explain you all about the region, the geological appearances and the technical aspects of the train route to Tende.

The train takes you from sea level in Nice, up to 1.000m above sea level in the mountains. You pass through 81 tunnels and over 407 bridges.

How to buy tickets for the Train des Merveilles?

Online, I could only find the costs from the SNCF website .

In summer, you can apply for a DAY PASS! Ticket that is only 16€ and you can travel on the train all day!

What a bargain. The one-way ticket from Nice to Tende is already €15,00 so please apply for the pass. Rules for the Day Pass here.

You can buy a regular ticket from the vending machines in the hall of the train station but you need to go to the reservation desk and ask the clerk for the ZOU! Ticket.

Stops on the route of the train des Merveilles

I looked up all the stops along the route of the train of wonders and the things to do and see at the little towns. In the end, I choose to take the very first train, 7.30 am, and make it a full day trip from Nice . I made 3 stops along the way: Tende, Saorge and Sospel.

Tende, France

I took the train des Merveilles all the way to the final stop of the train in Tende .

This gave me the chance to wake up a bit (or doze off for a while) as the train trotted into the mountains.

After two hours, I got off in lovely Tende.

The Italian mountains in the distance, the little town was just waking up. I headed to the Archaeological Museum of Tende to see what the museum was about, but it wasn’t open yet.

The tourist office next door was open, so I grabbed a little city plan and headed in the other direction.

Market people were just setting up their stalls and I bought a delicious sandwich from the local bakery which I enjoyed on a bench in the sun.

Did you know Tende was the last commune to join the French Republic in 1947?

Medieval Tende

After my breakfast, I headed towards the medieval town of Tende. I was alone in this part of the village. No cars, no people. Just very old houses, streets and I felt like I was in the Middle Ages. The weather was gorgeous and I made my way up in town. I visited the church and looked around.

As I was heading back into the modern town of Tende, I noticed the 14th-c entury tower of the castle of the Lascaris up on a cliff. As I didn’t feel like going back up again, I continued my way but I think you’ll have a marvelous view from there.

I visited the museum in Tende and learned a bit more about the geological features of the Park de Mercantour . They had quite some interactive things, so it is interesting for children too. All the signs are in French but you can get a little booklet with information in your language.

After the museum in Tende, I headed back to the train station of Tende and got on the train towards Nice. After half an hour or so, I stopped in Saorge. Or better, the train station of Fontan-Saorge.

Getting to Saorge

The train station is situated right in the middle of these tiny towns. Online it said there should be a bus but it never came. As Saorge is about 2 km away, I needed to find a way to walk there.

Short route: I started walking along the road. There is hardly any traffic as the road ends in Saorge, but I came to a tunnel. I mistakenly saw the sign for “be aware for pedestrians” as “no pedestrians allowed”. I headed back to the train station.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

The long route: I started on the longer route. It said 2 hours and goes over the hills. But I turned around as I did not have enough water and I am terrible with walking in the mountains.

I sat at the train station and contemplated my options. There wouldn’t be a train for 2,5 hours and there was absolutely nothing to do. After I had a firm talk with myself, I decided on the lazy option:

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

The lazy option to Saorge

I decided to hitchhike to Saorge . I never hitch hiked before and I think, as a solo female traveller, you put your safety at risk. It will probably be alright but I like to minimize any risks. Have you ever hitch hiked?

I had to wait for a good 10 minutes before any car passed. Just enough time to have 2 nd and 3 rd thoughts about my decision. A little combo van pulled up and stopped. It was a woman travelling alone and she made room for me. We drove to the village and she dropped me off at the town’s central square.

On the way back, I sneakily followed two tourist ladies who were fumbling in their bags for car keys and I asked if I could catch a ride with them.

All in all, my first hitch hiking adventure turned out well but I don’t like to depend on others like this.

Saorge town

But there I was. The small town of Saorge. No traffic is allowed or possible after a certain point and I felt like I stepped into a time machine and entered an hippy enclave. I never saw so much dread locks, incense and prayer flags in a village.

The streets are old and narrow. The village is one string of houses aligned on the lower cliffs and the upper cliffs. I walked through the village twice and settle on a little terrace for something to drink as I waited for the monastery of Saorge to open.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

Monastery of Saorge

The main reason for visiting Saorge was the monastery at the other end of town. From there, you’ll have spectacular views of Saorge as it hugs the cliff like an eagle’s nest. You can see the bridges and viaducts the train des Merveilles passes and the surrounding is what you expect from a secluded French town.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

I headed to the Monastery and paid the €5,50 entrance fee to see it. To be honest, I came all that way to see the monastery but when I look back, I don’t think the monastery is worth the entrance fee.

The court yard is lovely but the church is dark and mouldy. The best views are at the exterior of the monastery of Saorge.

There is a guided tour which you can join for free but it is only in French. I did understand the monastery of Saorge is no longer in use but is used as a place for writers to work in silence.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

Saorge Monastery’s Garden

What I did find exceptional was the garden of the monastery. It moved me in a way I have trouble to explain. Here grows an abundance of herbs and vegetables in orderly fashion and the views were striking.

The garden was so lovely, I suddenly missed my boyfriend intensely, who loves his vegetable garden and who was at the other end of Europe at the time. He would have loved it.

Is Saorge worth to include in your day trip from Nice?

The question is: Is Saorge worth stopping for on the train des Merveilles?

I am not sure.

The town was lovely and had that unique secluded feel. The road to the monastery gave lovely views and the garden of the monastery of Saorge was wonderful. But it was a bit of a hassle to get there and there might be other places along the route of the train des Merveilles that are worth your time too.

Would you like to visit Saorge?

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

After Saorge, I hopped on the train to Nice and got off in Sospel. By now I was getting a little bit tired and felt I’d seen enough medieval and quirky French towns.

But one more stop, I was dedicated to making the very best of my day trip from Nice.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

Sospel had a much more modern feel to it. I walked from the train station to the river and found all kinds of modern amenities that you’d expect in any small French town.

Of course, I stuffed my face with delicious foods at the local bakery and got some drinks at the supermarket.

I crossed the bridge that was gorgeously aligned with beautiful fragrant flowers . On the bridge to the old town of Sospel is the main attraction of the town.

The tower or keep of Sospel is from the 12 th century and traders needed to pay taxes to cross the bridge as it was on a major salt trading route . That is right, no wine or cheese for which France is famous now, but the main thing to trade was salt.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

Ancient Salt Route

Donkeys past the bridge with large bricks of salt on their backs and traders needed to pay tax at the tower. This is what added importance and wealth to the settlement.

Once passed the bridge, you’ll arrive back in the Middle Ages again. Old town houses, painted windows and colourful shutters and façades.

After walking around town, I headed back to the train station and got back to Nice. My day trip from Nice on the train des Merveilles was over.

The Train des Merveilles is an excellent day trip from Nice, France. You can explore the villages of Tende, Saorge and Sospel as I share my experiences!

I was happy to explore a new part of France. Just 100 km from the coast lays a whole different country where people live in a nearly traditional way and the towns are self-supporting.

If you’re looking for a guided experience with museum visits, lunch and the amazing train ride includes, check out the options for a tour here .

Which train would you recommend if you could only do one – train des Pignes or Train des Merveilles?

Owh Tara, that is a very difficult question as both go to different regions, different scenery and villages. I did like the train ride on the train des merveilles a lot so I would go with that one if you only have 1 day.

I’ve been to all these places on the train des Merveilles and even written about it too on my blog

Lovely Phoebe! It is such a great day trip.

All these towns look lovely! I think my favourite would be Tende, though Sospel would be a close second. I’ve never been on a long train journey before but this looks like a relaxing one to go on.

I love travelling by train and it seems like there are a lot of great places to explore on this route. I absolutely adore your pictures of Tende. What a picturesque place!

Nice Little Tourist Train

This is a nice tourist train that gives you a painless way to get a quick overview of Lugano and to see parts of the city away from the lake area. It was very warm the day we took it and the breeze as you rode along was welcome. No real commentary, just announcements of the various stops. Approx. 40 minutes. Can possibly use it as a hop on, hop off system, but no guarantees that it will not be full when the next one comes around. Prices are 9 chf for adults 11-99, kids 10 and under 5 chf, and free if over 100! Saves on walking in a somewhat spread out city. Grab a brochure to see the route and times.

It is a good an reasonably cheap way to quickly see the city and as you can get on and off, you could use it to go to some of the tourist attractions. However don't expect a guided tour - sometimes they called out the name of the place or attraction but no information (I wasn't expecting any from previous reviews). I did find it extremely bumpy though and it wasn't very clear where they stopped (I think you were supposed to tell them where you wanted to get off when you got on). I was staying in Paradisio and it was a handy way to get to the centre and have a look around

For €9 per person this is quite good value. The train weaves it's way around the streets at a leisurely pace. A circuit is completed after 40 minutes or so. The commentary is in Italian only but the driver states places you are passing.

There is nothing new to see except the low side of the main street buildings and the back of the cars ! a waste of time as the circuit is what you have normally see when walking in the city ! Take a cruise instead !

My group & i visited City of Lugano & i took them to get the trenino turistico lugano to take a glimpse of the city.We had 45mins to experience the beauty of Lugano. It was an experience that everyone enjoyed. Not to miss when you visit Lugano.

It was very nice and relaxing to ride the tram around and see the city. The price was great and the amount of time spent was just right.

La Brigue Acelindano

The "Train des Merveilles" route from the Med to Mercantour

  • Things to do
  • The Most Beautiful Routes
  • By train from Nice to Tende

The delightful and aptly-named “Train des Merveilles” (Train of Wonders) winds its way from Nice to Tende, via the verdant valleys of Paillon, La Bévéra and La Roya. A 70 km journey through untouched scenery dotted with tunnels, viaducts and teetering little alpine villages, inviting you to relax, unwind and switch off from the hubbub of daily life. Wow effect guaranteed!

Towns visited : Sospel Breil-sur-Roya Saorge La Brigue Tende

The “ Train des Merveilles ” pulls out of the train station in Nice , the capital of the Côte d’Azur, to begin its slow ascent to the alpine summits. A tree-filled landscape – mainly pines and chestnuts – slides by the window for the next hour, although it seems to go by in a flash. With its light red walls, Sospel ‘s little train station exudes a typical mountain village atmosphere. Blues, greens, yellows and oranges… Here, the pastel façades have an air of Italy. In the distance, a ring of alpine massifs stands out against the cloudless blue sky. Begin your tour with a stroll round the village lanes, less than 10 minutes on foot from the station, before heading to the banks of Bévéra river. The old Pont-Vieux bridge standing over the river is a legacy from the ancient salt route. A few minutes further on, push open the door to Saint Michael’s cathedral, a marvel of Baroque architecture. If you’re feeling sporty, prolong the pleasure with a visit to one of Sospel’s three forts, erected on the alpine Maginot line: Barbonnet, Agaisen or Saint Roch (the walk takes at least 3 hours).

Hostellerie du Pont-Vieux

It’s time to climb back on the “Train des Merveilles” – but only for 10 short minutes. Welcome to Breil-sur-Roya , a history-packed village set along the ancient route linking the Nice hinterland and Italian plain of Po. To get a better grasp on the history of the Nice-Tende French railway line, inaugurated in 1928 and destroyed during WWII, head to the “Écomusée du Haut Pays et des Transports”. Located just 5 minutes on foot from the station, this ecomuseum also harbours several fascinating old locomotives. After the museum tour, retrace your steps and enjoy roaming around the historic quarter. Old stone houses with vaulted porches stand on the banks of Roya river , lined with plane trees and a swan lake. The hike to Tour de la Cruella (4 km loop accessible to all, departing from the town hall) offers sweeping views over the village. On fine days, Breil-sur-Roya is a coveted white water sports hotspot offering canoeing, kayaking, rafting and canyoning. Tempting!

Hotel - Restaurant La Bonne Auberge

From Fontan-Saorge railway station, it only takes 20 minutes on foot to reach Saorge , a proud holder of the “France’s Most Beautiful Villages” label. The walk is well worth it too: the trail clings to the rock face and forms a genuine balcony over Roya gorge . The tiered lanes of Saorge harbour several well-kept secrets, including a sublime Franciscan monastery standing guard over the village. Its construction began in 1639. Comprising the baroque church of Notre-Dame-des-Miracles with its characteristic pink and orange façade, a cloister and terraced garden gazing out over the mountains, the site is an ode to contemplation. Numerous hiking and mountain-biking trails criss-cross Saorge and its vicinity. One of them leads to Bain du Sémite : a natural, tree-lined pool ideal for a refreshing dip after your efforts.

Franciscan Monastery of Saorge and Notre-Dame des Miracles church

Continuing its alpine ascension, the “Train des Merveilles” rolls on to La Brigue , at the gateway to Mercantour National Park . You can reach the town centre on foot from the station in 10 minutes. Here, cobbled lanes rub shoulders with vaulted passageways running alongside Lévansa river. Linger awhile to admire the old listed buildings: Saint Martin’s collegiate church with its colourful vaulted ceilings, the ruins of the 14th-century fortified Château des Lascaris – the former home of a feudal lord – and Chapelle Saint Michel , built in the Piedmontese Baroque style. Seasoned walkers will definitely want to push on to Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines , basking in the heart of nature on the outskirts of the village. The colourful frescoes adorning this chapel nicknamed the “Sixtine Chapel of the Alpes-Maritimes” are truly worth your while.

flower hotel of the Alps

Here you are on your way to the last – and no doubt most astonishing – stage of your trip aboard the “Train des Merveilles”: the village of Tende , teetering at an altitude of 800 metres between Vallée de la Roya and the aptly-named Vallée des Merveilles (Valley of Wonders). A place out of time, standing witness to a long-gone era, the Vallée des Merveilles is home to some of Europe’s most prolific rock carvings, thought to date from between the Late Neolithic age and Middle Bronze Age, i.e. between 3,200 and 1,300 BC… If you want to learn more about the mysteries of this precious archaeological heritage, head to the Musée Départemental des Merveilles . This fascinating museum unveils the origins and cultures of the ancient alpine populations. The tour continues with a stroll round the historic quarter, with its typical medieval architecture comprising sloping parallel streets, served by sometimes-covered perpendicular lanes or “carugiu”. Don’t miss a visit to the astonishing collegiate church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption , bedecked with a red façade. And to wind up your journey in style, treat yourself to a trip down Sentier de l’Aigle – the “eagle’s trail” -, boasting panoramic views over the majestic alpine summits.

12 Best Beach Towns on the East Coast

Travel to the best beach towns on the East Coast for fresh seafood, buzzy boardwalks, and leisurely days under the sun.

nice little tourist train

William Reagan/Getty Images

From the rocky shoreline of New England down to the flat beaches of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, the Eastern Seaboard is a region that shines its brightest in the warmer months. As temperatures increase, many travelers make the journey to their favorite East Coast beach towns to soak up the restorative, nostalgic nature that comes with salt water, sand, and good old-fashioned summer fun.

“East Coast beach towns have a certain distinct charm that you have to experience yourself to fully embrace,” says Katie Cosgrove, the director of sales and marketing at Ashore Resort & Beach Club in Ocean City, Maryland. “These towns tend to be more laid back, with an appeal for every type of traveler — whether it's families, beach week groups looking for nightlife, couples looking for a getaway, and everyone in between.” Plus, she adds, most of these destinations are relatively close to larger cities — like Savannah, Richmond, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City — which “makes for a quick and easy getaway for urban dwellers.”

With summer right around the corner, we had a few local experts, including Cosgrove, share their picks for the best beach towns on the East Coast. See which ones made the cut below.

Kennebunkport, Maine

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

According to Natalie Kurtzman , a travel advisor at Fora , you’ll want to head to Maine for “wide sandy beaches, amazing food (homemade blueberry pie and fresh lobster are a New England rite of passage), and charming towns.” While there are several beach towns to choose from, Kennebunkport is her top pick. She recommends starting your vacation by checking into Hidden Pond , where you can stay in cottages and bungalows, and then spending a day at Goose Rocks Beach. “A visit to the area requires a stop at Mabel’s Lobster Claw for — you guessed it — lobster and their award-winning blueberry pie,” she adds.

Newport, Rhode Island

shunyufan/Getty Images

“Newport is filled with amazing history and incredible food,” says Caroline Broome, founder and designer of Tillie , a Palm Beach-based fashion brand. While some beach towns veer toward cute and kitschy, Newport is all about the glamor; if you’ve watched The Gilded Age on HBO, you may remember the mansions, the cocktail parties, and all of the social drama between Manhattan’s elite as they enjoyed summers in Newport. Modern-day Newport still holds onto that level of glitz, with several luxury hotels welcoming travelers to the seaside destination. Broome recommends staying at the historic Castle Hill Inn , but there’s also The Chanler at Cliff Walk , The Brenton Hotel , and The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . During your stay, be sure to check off all of the classic Newport activities: Go sailing, explore the 3.5-mile scenic Cliff Walk , and visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Montauk, New York

MikeRega/Getty Images

As New Yorkers know, the train ride out to the very end of Long Island can be stressful (particularly if you’re joining the throngs of people leaving Manhattan on a Friday). Montauk, however, is worth the four-hour ride and ensuing hassle — and there are even pockets of quiet , if you know where to look. It’s a bit more rugged than some of the other towns in the Hamptons, and I find that to be a significant part of its appeal. There’s a rustic-meets-luxury charm to the town, which you’ll experience at Crow's Nest , a bohemian hotel with both rooms and cottages. Or, if you want to take it up a notch, spend a long weekend at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , where 158 rooms and suites overlook the ocean. If it’s your first time out East, I also recommend visiting the Montauk Point Lighthouse, indulging in a lobster roll at Duryea's , and getting some dinner essentials at Gosman’s Fish Market .

Chatham, Massachusetts

benedek/Getty Images

“Chatham feels so nostalgic, with the evening bandstand concerts and the charm of Old Cape Cod,” says Kurtzman. “I spent time in Chatham as a child and have some of the fondest memories at Oyster Pond Beach and strolling Main Street.” If you’re traveling with a family or a larger group, you may want to opt for a quintessential Cape Cod beach cottage for your stay. But for those hoping for a more romantic or luxurious stay, she recommends Chatham Bars Inn : “The inn has one of the best spas in New England if you’re looking to sneak away for some quiet time. Plus, you can walk into town, which is such a highlight.” Between beach trips, bike rides, and popping into the t-shirt stores, galleries, and boutiques on Main Street, check out two of Kurtzman’s can’t-miss Chatham staples: local watering hole The Chatham Squire and Chatham Candy Manor .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Tetra Images/Getty Images

Nantucket has its own brand of island magic — one created by foggy weather, blooming hydrangeas, cobblestone streets, lobster rolls, and stunning oceanside homes. “There is so much to love [on the island], but a few of my favorites include dining at Cru , Lola 41 , and The Nautilus . For a special meal with gorgeous sunset views, go to Galley Beach . A visit to Cisco Brewers is a must — and this is well paired with grabbing picnic items for the beach at Bartlett’s Farm ,” says Kurtzman. The beach scene is also notable (her favorites are Surfside Beach and Jetties Beach), and there are several top-tier hotels to book for an extra-luxe getaway.  “To stay, I love the White Elephant for its location, great accommodations (especially great for families), and amazing service. I also love The Nantucket Hotel for the location and amazing kids programs,” she says.

Ocean City, Maryland

aimintang/Getty Images

“Ocean City, Maryland is by far my favorite East Coast beach town. I grew up going to Ocean City with my family, and I couldn't be happier to now call this beach retreat home,” says Cosgrove. “I love that you can get a little bit of everything… easy beach access, family activities, great seafood, and vibrant nightlife.” Some beach towns may be sleepy, but Ocean City is the opposite; there are amusement parks ( Trimper Rides and Jolly Roger Amusement Park ), mini golf courses, playgrounds, piers, and plenty of dining options to keep you full and energized. “Aside from our new signature restaurant [at Ashore Resort & Beach Club], Tide Room , I'd recommend visitors also check out The Hobbit and Liquid Assets , which has a great wine selection. Plus the downtown boardwalk and Thrasher's famous french fries are not to be missed,” she says.

Duck, North Carolina

For families who “love a mix of adventure and relaxation,” Cosgrove recommends Duck, a beach town in the Outer Banks. With one of the best beaches in North Carolina , this is the type of town where you can really kick back and take it easy. If you prefer to spend your vacation days on the move, take a spin around the beach town on a bike (you can rent one from Duck Cycle ), head out on the water with Nor’ Banks Sailing & Watersports , or get your steps in while exploring the Duck Town Park and Boardwalk . And if you end up craving something sweet? Duck delivers. “One of my absolute favorite places to go is Duck Donuts ,” says Cosgrove, “They make incredible hot donuts made to order.”

Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

Ray Tan/Getty Images

Broome calls Sullivan’s Island “one of the most lovable, laid-back beach towns in the South,” and it’s not hard to see why. Just a short drive from downtown Charleston, the 2.5-mile-long island is a local favorite, thanks to its proximity, easy beach access, and number of incredible restaurants — including The Obstinate Daughter , Sullivan’s Fish Camp , and Poe’s Tavern . “The homes here are swoon-worthy, and the beach is extra wide, making for incredible views and endless beach walks,” she adds. Pro tip: Rent a bike from Sealand Adventure Sports to explore both Sullivan’s Island and neighboring Isle of Palms.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

If you’ve traveled to Hilton Head Island even just once, you know it’s the kind of destination that feels like home the moment you arrive; it’s just that special. “Travelers will love Hilton Head's great long stretches of beaches and historic touches — it's also a really great beach town for those who love walking and biking,” says Cosgrove. An easy weekend trip from Savannah , this part of the Lowcountry boasts more than 12 miles of sandy beaches, 30 golf courses, and endless ways to spend a long, leisurely day. Watch the boats arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina , learn about the island’s history from a Gullah Heritage Trail Tours guide, search out dolphins with Dolphin Discoveries Nature Tours , or pick up fresh seafood at Hilton Head Farmers Market .

St. Simons Island, Georgia

DorothyBlahnik/Getty Images

Broome, who got married on nearby Sea Island , names St. Simons Island one of the best East Coast beach towns — a title given due to its perennial appeal. “[I] love that this destination is a wonderful place to visit year-round. There is always something festive going on with activities for the whole family,” she says. In the summer, East Beach beckons; in the off-season, visitors can still enjoy the scenery on a bike ride along the St. Simons Island Trail System, pop by the St. Simons Light House Museum , or fill up on the famous pancakes at Palmer’s Village Cafe . During the holidays, a visit to The Cloister is paramount (although you’ll need to be a guest — or have a dining reservation — to get on Sea Island).

Tybee Island, Georgia

When the summer heat descends upon Savannah, locals flock to Tybee Island, where the wide beaches offer a reprieve from the humidity. It’s an extremely family-friendly destination that offers something for everyone. For the history buffs, there’s Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse; the adventure seekers can paddle out on the open water with Sea Kayak Georgia ; and nature lovers will appreciate the unparalleled access to wildlife with Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventures . Come mealtime, there’s no need to get dressed up. In true beach town form, Tybee Island is extremely casual — whether you’re dining at Breakfast Club (my personal favorite), The Crab Shack , or Salt Island Fish and Beer .

Palm Beach, Florida

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

East Coast beach towns come in all shapes and sizes, and Palm Beach, Florida is certainly one of the most glittery — and photogenic.  “Filled with endless style and abundant sunshine, Palm Beach is an oasis that feels a bit like stepping into a postcard,” says Broome. “With breezy palm trees, blooming flowers, and beautiful colors around every corner, the inspiration is endless.” The 18-mile-long barrier island is known for its high-end shopping along Worth Avenue, historic landmarks (the Flagler Museum ), and an impressive roster of hotels ; both The Breakers and The Brazilian Court Hotel are centrally located in town. Following a pool day or a ride on a beach cruiser, stop by Buccan Sandwich Shop for a quick lunch, followed by drinks at HMF or Florie’s at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach .
