Reuthers Scotland / Europe Guided Motorcycle Tour

Scotland Motorcycle Tours

Once in your life feel like a Highlander - on a Harley-Davidson! With our 8 day Guided motorcycle tour through Scotland, enjoy the exciting mountain world of the rugged Scottish Highlands and the magnificent nature in the North of the British Isles. After starting in the provincial capital of Edinburgh you will ride to Stirling Castle, where Mary Stuart became Queen of Scotland at the age of 9 months. Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain awaits you in Fort William. When you visit Eilean Donan Castle, the castle might look familiar: the first part of the "Highlander" saga was filmed here. After a boatstour on Loch Ness a whisky tasting at the Glenfiddich Distillery at the Whisky Trail awaits you, before the Guided motorcycle tour through Scotland ends in Edinburgh.

The Route for the Scotland Motorcycle Tours

Day 1: Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Welcome to Edinburgh, the Scottish capital - also known as Athens of the north. For those who are arriving the day before, we have a visit to the famous Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia as part of an optional program. In the evening we then have our official welcome dinner with a welcome drink and a tour briefing.

Day 2: Edinburgh > Fort William

Valley of Tears, Scotland

Today we will first pick up our Harley-Davidson rental motorcycles and then visit the Sterling Castle with its 75m high castle rock. In this castle Mary Stuart was crowned at the tender age of only 9 months as the Scottish Queen. Another important site is Glencoe, which we will reach at around noon after driving through the "Valley of Tears". Beneath the highest mountain in Great Britain - Ben Nevis (1343 m) - is our overnight stop and the entrance to the Scottish Highlands: Fort William.

Day 3: Fort William > Ullapool

Ullapool, Scotland

The Road to the Isles and the Glenfinnan Monument are definitely worth a stop before we visit the famous Elean Donan Castle, where the first part of "Highlander" was filmed. Our overnight stay is planned to be in Ullapool, a small fishing village. Here, so they say, the Scottish wilderness begins.

Day 4: Ullapool > Tongue

Smoo Caves, Scotland

Today we experience the loneliness of highlands at first hand. The popular Reuthers Roadside Lunch provides for the bodily welfare. Another highlight are the Smoo Caves, the largest sea caves in Great Britain. We will spend the night in Tongue, which also has a castle.

Day 5: Tongue > Golspie

Dunrobin Castle, Scotland

We continue on the "North Coast 500" - the Scottish response to the legendary American Route 66. In the truest sense of the word we cruise on to the most northern point of the British mainland: Dunnet Head with its lighthouse. We'll take our lunchbreak a few miles further in the northernmost village of the British mainland, in John O'Groates, at the end of the road. An additional mandatory stop during this exciting day is Dunrobin Castle with its picture-book garden. The well-preserved castle is also the seat of the Sutherland Clan.

Day 6: Golspie > Inverness

Loch Ness, Scotland

Starting from Golspie we first drive past Inverness and visit Urquhart Castle with its history of more than 1500 years. Then, in Fort Augustus, at the southern end of Loch Ness, we will take a boatstour and maybe even the famous monster of Loch Ness, "Nessie", will welcome us...

Day 7: Inverness > Craigellachie

Glenfiddich Distillery, Whisky Trail, Scotland

A highlight of our Scotland trip is undoubtedly the Culloden Moor, where once the tragic battle between the Scottish clans and the English took place. Passing Brodie Castle and Elgin Cathedral we directly arrive at the Whisky Trail in Scotland. With an extensive tour in one the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland, the Glenfiddich Distillery, we will learn more about the Scottish whisky. There is a good reason that our overnight stay is close to the distillery.

Day 8: Craigellachie > Edinburgh

Balmoral Castle, Scotland

Last day of our Scotland tour. If possible, we visit Balmoral Castle, summer residence of Queen Elizabeth II. or instead the restored Davidson Cottage, home to William C Davidson. In 1857, at the age of eleven he emigrated to the USA with his family. There, he built a shed for his sons. That shed became the first Harley-Davidson® workshop situated on Chestnut Street, now Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee... After drop off our Harley-Davidson motorcycles in Edinburgh, we will celebrate our traditional Farewell Dinner in the evening. Sometimes saying goodbye is the "beginning of a wonderful friendship", so let's meet again on one of our dream tours in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Europe or the USA.

Motorcycle Touring in Scotland – why you should go!

Scotland is one of the best places to go motorcycling in the UK . The mix of scenery, history and epic twisty roads is just magical.

One of the best things about being able to go motorcycle touring in Scotland is that you can get a feel for the country in a short space of time. It’s not a huge country and you can see an awful lot in just 10-14 days on a Scotland Road trip.

In this guide, we’re going to share with you everything you need to know to go motorcycle touring in Scotland, including how to travel to Scotland with your bike, the best places to visit in Scotland, planning your itinerary and route, where to stay, riding tips and other practical advice to help you have an amazing Scottish road trip.

Motorcycle in Scotland- Where to go

When planning a motorbike trip to Scotland, the first thing you need to do is decide where you’re going (and how long you are going for!)

How long to go for?

You can easily visit and explore Scotland for just a few days or a week and it’s quite easy to navigate around. Of course, if you have two weeks or longer, you can see a lot more of the country.

If you’re riding to Scotland from within the UK or driving with your bikes on a trailer, Scotland is pretty easy to find- just head North!

How long does it take to ride across Scotland?

Scotland isn’t a huge country and you can get across it quite quickly if you use the main roads.

As a guide, Gretna Green (right on the southern border between England and Scotland) to John o’Groats (on the northern coast) takes about 7 hours (360miles and average speed 51mph)

It’s also not a wide country. Oban (west coast) to Edinburgh (east coast) is only 124 miles and will take about 3 hours. (Average speed 40mph)

TOP TIP: As you can see by those timings, you will NOT be driving at motorway speeds for most of the country. The roads are often small and slow. Don’t underestimate how long a journey will take you- especially if you keep stopping to take photographs of your motorcycle in epic places (don’t worry- we all do it.)

Best Motorcycle Routes in Scotland

Some of the best roads to ride in Scotland include:

  • The NC500. One of the most popular but it’s easier to tour it by motorcycle than tour the NC500 by motorhome.
  • The SW300 – one of the most scenic roads in Scotland

Make sure you bring a motorcycle camera or helmet cam – the scenery is spectacular wherever you go!

Best places to visit in Scotland by motorbike

Some of our favourite places to visit in Scotland include:

  • Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
  • Isle of Skye- you can see most of it in 2 days
  • John o’Groats- touristy, but you have to visit at least once
  • Edinburgh- especially the castle and Arthur’s seat
  • The Cairngorms- The biggest National Park in the UK
  • Any of the whisky distilleries
  • Orkney- you can do a day trip to Orkney with your motorcycle, just like we did.

And, of course, you HAVE to watch the series Outlander (or read the books!) – it’s a wonderful way to learn about the history while enjoying some eye candy 😉

When is the best time to visit Scotland?

Scotland is worth visiting at any time of the year, but for different reasons. It never gets crazy warm- top temperatures in August only average 19c and it can (and does!) rain whenever it likes. So always bring appropriate clothing, layers and a coat!

Spring in Scotland

Spring is lovely- as long as it’s after April. The moors and fields are full of Spring flowers and the views are beautiful. Although technically Spring starts on 21 February, the weather doesn’t really warm up until end of April/ May- average temperatures in May are 15c Avoid the Easter holidays if you can- prices get hiked up then and it can get very busy.

Summer road trips in Scotland

Summer is great temperature wise… but there are 2 big downsides to summer- crowds and midges.

Scotland gets VERY crowded in the summer holidays (July and August)- especially around the big cities and attractions, like Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and anything to do with Harry Potter. Also, famous routes like the NC500 become over-crowded with campervans and motorhomes trying to find places to stay (we’ll deal with that shortly.)

Having said that, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (held in August) is well worth the cost and crowds- it’s a wonderful experience.

Midge season in Scotland

Never heard of midges? Visit in summer and you will! Midges are flying insects. Scotland has a type called biting midges, which are active between May and September (temperature dependant.) However, the very worst time is July and August where it’s almost impossible to get away from them.

I cunningly married a man who attracts midges, mosquitos and everything else (smart, huh?!) and he got bitten horrendously when we were in Scotland in July. However, even I (who rarely gets bitten and normally sits there smugly while he complains) was attacked by these terrors. So DEFINITELY get some decent protection.

Autumn in Scotland

Autumn is actually our favourite time to tour Scotland. The days are still long and (fairly!) warmish, the leaves look amazing as they change colours, and the busy summer crowds have gone. Roads are clearer and there are still enough hours in the day to explore and see things.

The weather will be chilly from the end of October into November and many places close at end of October, so do your research if there’s something specific you want to do or see.

Winter motorcycling in Scotland

I’ll be honest, winter in Scotland starts around the end of November and runs until April. It gets COLD, there will be snow and you’ll need to prepare your bike and yourself with appropriate gear. The days are also shorter, so you’ll have less time to explore.

Having said that, there are some reasons to visit Scotland in winter, despite the weather, snow and many places being shut.

The best time is Hogmany (New Year’s Eve). The festivities and parties are legendary, especially in Edinburgh and there’s almost guaranteed to be music and dancing at a pub near you.

It’s also the only place to go skiing in the UK, so it’s the place to go to hit the slopes.

Planning a riding route to  Scotland

Honestly, it’s not hard to find Scotland- just drive north from anywhere in England! 🙂

From Dover to the Scottish border takes about 6 and a half hours (385miles). The quickest route is to use the motorways- A2/M2/M25/M11/ A1(M)

You could also use the M40/M6, but be warned that the traffic around Birmingham is often awful and it only gets worse on the M6. If you go this route, go as early as possible and avoid rush hours.

Some top tips for route planning:

  • Avoid driving in rush hour where possible (usually 7-9am and 4-6.30pm)
  • Try to avoid driving on the weekends or on bank holidays- LOTS of traffic
  • Alternatively, get up early and do as much driving as possible before the traffic hits, then stop and have a nap somewhere safe- a huge advantage of having a motorhome or campervan with a bed with you!!

Scotland scenic drives

Can I ride to Scotland in the Winter?

Yes, generally the major routes are open all year. However, if you’re not native to the UK you should know that we are AWFUL at dealing with snow and adverse weather (although Scotland is admittedly better than England).

At the first sign of snowfall, expect drivers to do the craziest things, including but not limited to driving at 3mph, driving down the middle of the road, stopping unexpectedly, taking 17 hours to decide if they’re turning and generally forgetting all common sense (I’m British, I’m allowed to say this stuff 😉)

Borders / Customs in Scotland

Scotland is part of the UK. There is no ‘hard border’ between England and Scotland- you can just drive right across. If you are going on a ferry, you may be required to show some ID, but otherwise you don’t need any.

Scotland uses GBP (sterling) as currency. You might receive banknotes with ‘Bank of Scotland’ on them. These are legal tender in England and Wales too. But you do NOT need ‘Bank of Scotland’ bills- Bank of England is fine.

Bringing a dog / pet into Scotland

If your dog is England or Wales based, you can travel with them into Scotland without any paperwork, although we always recommend carrying microchip details and details of their innoculations, just in case.

If your dog is NOT UK based, you will need to carry:

  • Microchip details
  • Proof of rabies vaccination/ Pet Passport
  • Proof of Tapeworm treatment – must be given between 1 and 5 days before crossing into Britain. The treatment is not necessary if you travel  DIRECTLY  from Finland, Ireland, Malta or Norway. You do NOT need a second tapeworm treatment for travelling into Scotland if you have already been in England or Wales for more than 5 days.

Hiring a motorcycle to tour Scotland

If you don’t have your own bike, or don’t want to ride to Scotland, you can easily fly in and hire one. Just make sure to ask how to get from the airport to the rental agency- not all of them are at the airport itself and you might need to book a taxi.

To rent a vehicle in Scotland you must:

  • be at least 21 years old, (certain car categories may require older) Some hire companies have a maximum age limit of 75.
  • hold a full cat A motorcycle licence for at least 24 months and have had regular driving experience.
  • proof of UK address (like a bill) or proof of where you’re are staying (other nationalities).
  • show identification (identity card for EU citizens or a valid passport for other nationalities)

You can expect to pay from around £60/ day for a motorcycle in June out of peak season.

Motorcycle touring in Scotland- what gear do you need to carry?

Unlike  motorcycling in France  or many countries in Europe, there is NOT a list of equipment you MUST carry in your vehicle for any of the countries in the UK.

That being said, it makes sense to carry this safety gear with you:

  • Warning triangle
  • Hi-vis reflective jackets  – NOT mandatory but highly recommend if you break down at night
  • A tyre repair kit.
  • If you wear glasses you should carry a spare pair
  • Winter tyres are not compulsory, but we highly recommend them if visiting Scotland in winter.
  • First aid kit
  • Spare bulbs – not compulsory, but useful
  • Crash helmets are mandatory for motorbike/ moped riders and passengers.

NOTE – If buying a helmet, check for an ECE 22 E-Mark label to be road-legal on European roads. Read more.

What documents do you need to road trip in Scotland?

If you’re driving or riding in Scotland, you need to carry the following documents:

  • Passport (or identity card if from Ireland)
  • Driving licence (check it is in date!) An EU driving licence is accepted
  • Vehicle registration document/ V5 logbook. (See below)
  • Motorcycle insurance documents
  • Breakdown cover
  • Vehicle must be legally taxed and MOT’d
  • Personal travel insurance

You also do not need a green card, IDP or trailer certification if you are UK based. If you are based outside of the UK, please ask your insurer to confirm what they need to provide to make sure you are covered (it varies from country to country.)

Many UK residents choose not to carry their vehicle registration documents with them, as a safety measure against theft. However, you may be asked to present yourself with the document at a police station within a few days. If you cannot do this (if you live outside mainland UK), then you should carry the registration document with you.

Tolls or Vignette in Scotland

You’ll be pleased to know that Scotland does not have a vignette system and there are currently no toll roads. You can just turn up on your motorcycle and ride.

Tips & Laws for motorcycling in Scotland

Scotland has a good road network, including plenty of smaller roads made for motorbikes.

Some basic rules for driving in Scotland:

  • Scotland drives on the LEFT, like everywhere in the UK, but opposite to most of Europe
  • Overtake on the right (NEVER undertake)
  • Speed limits are shown by a circular sign, with a red border and number (in miles per hour)
  • The use of the horn is prohibited in built-up areas from 2330 to 0700 hours.
  • Farm animals or wildlife are common on rural roads- always take care, especially at night
  • At some junctions you might see criss-crossed yellow lines painted on the road. Do not stop in these boxes- stop before them and do not enter until the exit is clear.
  • Many buses in the UK have cameras on the back; do not drive in bus lanes- you will be fined.
  • There is NO rules for headlights to be switched on during the day.
  • Police cars, ambulances & fire engines always have priority- they could use flashing blue, red or green lights and sirens or flashing headlights. Pull safely to the side of the road and let them pass.
  • Roundabouts are common in Scotland. Give way to vehicles from your right, and turn left on entering the roundabout.
  • It is common for very rural roads to be single track, with passing places. These places are NOT parking spots- do not leave your vehicle here, you will block the road.
  • Scotland does NOT have on-the-spot fines for driving offences (although you can be stopped and given a ticket which you can pay later). You will either be asked to report to a local police station within a set period of time, or a fine will arrive through the post.

Speed limits in Scotland

Motorway signs are blue with white writing. Other road signs are green or brown for places of interest.

Speed Limits for motorcycles and vehicles under 3.05t are as follows (unless otherwise signed!)

  • Motorways- 70mph (112km/h)
  • Major roads/ dual carriageways- 70mph (112km/h)
  • Outside built-up areas- 60 mph (96 km/h)
  • Built up areas- 30 mph (48 km/h)

Many residential areas have speed limits as low as 20mph 32 km/h), especially near schools.

Speed cameras in Scotland

There are many speed cameras in Scotland. Pay attention to your speed- fines are not as severe as if you were motorcycling in Switzerland, but they are still pretty high.

Drink driving laws

Driving under the influence of alcohol is taken very seriously in Scotland and the UK. Scotland only allows 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood. As always, don’t ride and drive.

Petrol/ Diesel

There are plenty of fuel stations across Scotland, although they are less common in rural areas. We recommend not letting your tank drop below half-full and filling up when you can if you are driving into remote areas, like around the NC500. As with everywhere, you’ll find the prices slightly higher on the motorways.

Petrol – Unleaded 95 ‘premium unleaded’ (E10) / unleaded 97 ‘super unleaded’ (E5).  Green handles on pump and pumps will clearly label petrol as either E10 or E5.

Diesel is diesel. Black or yellow handles on pump

Some places are 24h pay at the pump (mainly near cities), but many require you to go into the shop and pay the cashier after you’ve filled up- there will be a sign to tell you what to do. (Leave your bike in front of the pump and make a note of the pump number.)

You can pay using cash or a credit card. European visa cards are usually accepted- remember you will pay the exchange rate. Many places do NOT take American Express.

More useful things to know when motorcycle touring in Scotland

Some more tips to help you enjoy your time touring in Scotland.

Phone Dialling Code:  +44

Capital : Edinburgh

Emergency Numbers:  999 will get you police, fire, ambulance and coastguard. Also, 112 (the European emergency number) will also work in the UK

Language – The official language of Scotland is English. Gaelic is also spoken and you may see signs in Gaelic.

Currency – GBP (£ sterling) You can exchange money at banks or many post offices or travel agents. There are also a multitude of ATMs available. Scotland does have its own sterling notes, so most currency in Scotland will look different to elsewhere in the UK.

Cards – most major credit and debit cards are accepted. American Express is only taken in large stores (often not at fuel stations)

Timezone – GMT. During summer, the country adopts British BST – Summer Time (UTC +1), which usually ends in the last week of October

Tipping-  Tipping is not expected but appreciated. 5% – 10% in restaurants is standard if you are happy with the service.h

Shops – Many normal shops close at 5.30pm, with bigger supermarkets often open until 10pm. Many small shops will not be open on Sundays, but bigger supermarkets and garages may be open for about 6 hours (often from 10-4pm)

Some of the local Scottish dishes to try include:

  • Tattie Scones- also called potato scones. They’re not ‘scones’ with cream and jam, but like potato bread, which is traditional with ‘proper’ breakfasts. Talking of which
  • Scottish Breakfasts- sausages, bacon, black pudding, tattie scones, baked beans, fried eggs, mushrooms… yum
  • Haggis (sheep parts including lungs, heart etc), which is mixed with oatmeal, suet, and seasonings and then cooked in a sheep’s stomach. I’ll be honest, I’ve never tried it…
  • Cullin Skink- a hearty soup made with Finnan haddock (smoked haddock), potatoes, and onions. Also known as smoked haddock chowder in other parts of Britain.
  • Cock-a-leekie soup- basically a soup with whatever’s to hand thrown in.
  • Scottish Shortbread. Traditional biscuits, sweeter than oatmeal cookies- very buttery and sugary. Delicious!

Touring Scotland with a dog

If like us you tour with your dog on your motorcycle, you’ll be pleased to know Scotland is pretty dog friendly and there are plenty of places to walk with them both on and off-lead. They’re allowed inside many restaurants, pubs and cafes- usually just ask if there isn’t a clear sign.

They are not allowed into public places like museums, but are usually welcome on trains and most public transport with a lead.

Using a drone in Scotland

You are allowed to take and fly your drone in Scotland, but it is a legal requirement for all drones weighing between 250g and 20kg to be registered and flown by competent pilots.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority works hard to balance drone users with other airspace users and have lots of information and tools to help.  Find out more here .

READ MORE:  What’s the best travel drone (and how to choose)

We also recommend getting the Drone Assist app on your phone or iPad, which will tell you where you can/ cannot fly.

Tour Overview

The Scottish Highlands are rightly acclaimed as one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Featuring vast mountain ranges, timeless lochs and ancient castles, Scotland is steeped in history, both human and natural.

You’ll get a real taste of Scotland on this tour of the stunning Highlands, magnificent coastline and the company of the friendly locals. We avoid the more well trodden routes and mix some must see destinations with some of the beautiful remote locations Scotland has to offer. Our first night is in Edinburgh. The welcome dinner will be in the hotels excellent restaurant serving locally sourced and produced food. Leaving from Edinburgh, Scotland’s iconic capital city we travel northwards to Balmoral Castle with the chance to stop and tour the castle (subject to HM the King not being in residence) and into Speyside, home of some of Scotland’s smoothest whiskies. A night spent in a charming local Inn and then onwards to the rugged North West coast. Your route goes via Loch Ness with the chance to visit Urquhart Castle perched on the banks of the loch. As you ride further north, you’ll see the landscape transform from rolling green hills into huge, towering cliffs, mountains and Lochs. We ride to the very north coast on winding single track roads. The most common road signs you will see are “Passing Place” and “Deer”. A charming remote hotel overlooking a sea loch on the north coast is your home for the night.

Turning south you wind your way down the coast on single track roads and over the Bealach na Ba (pass of the cattle) before crossing over to the Isle of Skye, the largest island of the inner Hebrides, on the last manually operated turntable ferry in Britain. Skye is the home of the castles of Clan MacDonald and Clan MacLeod. Leaving Skye, again by ferry, we cross over to Lochaber with its beautiful forested coastline and lochs. You get to ride some of Scotland’s iconic roads we then head to Inveraray with its castle and historic jail. Our hotel for the night has been in the family for generations and you will no doubt receive a warm welcome. Finally we head homeward, to Edinburgh via Glen Coe and our final night in the Capital. Dinner to celebrate the tour end will be taken in the heart of the city.

This tour will give you a real flavour of the Scottish Highlands and you will ride on a wide variety of roads from small single-track lanes to fast sweeping major roads. The roads in remote areas are largely single track and very quiet. You need to be a confident rider to get the best from them.

About bikerbnb's highland scramble, curated routes designed by local riders show you the best of the highlands and islands.

Our Highland Scramble guided motorcycle tours all start and finish in Edinburgh, Scotland. All of our experiences cover up to 1,000 miles over six days on mostly tarmac as off-roading in Scotland is essentially illegal unless you have permission from a private landowner or forestry commission.

We kick off our rides at about 9:30am each morning and plan to return to our evening accommodation around 6:00pm each day with plenty of stops for coffee, lunch and off-the-bike experiences.  Scotland is small but mighty and features a wide variety of terrain. We have tried to create some new thematic rides for 2023 to show you new parts of the country and unique accommodation options.

If you are looking for a little bit of everything, you should try our North Coast Traverse. On this classic ride, we’ll curate a whistle-stop tour across nearly the entire country. If you prefer to spend more time focusing on just one region like Scotland’s rugged west coast, you should consider joining our Skye or Island Traverse.

Bikerbnb adventure tours take into account differing riding abilities – so if you have any concerns about the length of the trip, terrain or riding in a group – just drop a member of our team a message at [email protected] and we’ll get you sorted.

Five nights in unique accommodation to help you relax off the bike each evening

Bikerbnb prides itself on offering world-class accommodation that is not only incredibly relaxing, but provides the piece of mind that your motorcycle will remain where you parked it. All of our accommodation options across our tours feature secure parking, drying facilities in the event of rain and convenient locations next to some of the best roads in the world.

During The Highland Scramble, we will start our ride at Bikerbnb HQ at Saltire Motorcycles, Edinburgh’s premier independent motorcycle dealership. From Edinburgh, we will then travel north to Perthshire and beyond.

We offer two types of accommodation packages – shared or single. At checkout, please specify if you prefer the shared or single supplement and if you are traveling with another rider or partner so we can plan accordingly.

Breakfast and dinner featuring fresh and local ingredients

Those familiar with Bikerbnb know that what we do off the bike is just as important as the riding. And moreover, we really pride ourselves in the quality of the food and drink served on all of adventure tours. It goes without saying that you won’t go hungry while travelling with Bikerbnb.

Breakfast and dinner are included in the price of the Highland Scramble. Meals feature local and seasonal ingredients prepared fresh for you. We will experience a taste of the country featuring the freshest seafood, meats, produce and whisky served at rustic farms to regal country estates.

If you have any special dietary preferences please just let us know and we’ll be sure to accommodate your request.

Professional photography to capture the trip of a lifetime

Bikerbnb works with partners like Royal Enfield, Fuel Motorcycles, Yeti, QuadLock, Rev’it! and many food and drink brands to support content marketing and product launches. We work with professionally trained photographers, filmmakers and drone pilots to capture snaps that you will print out and put up on your office wall.

A comprehensive album free of charge will be provided within two weeks of returning from our ride.

Support vehicle to carry gear, luggage and provide assistance

The Highland Scramble is a fully supported ride. We will be followed by a support vehicle where you can safely store your luggage, gear and your motorcycle in the rare event a mechanical.

A certified technician and trained first aid responders are present on all Bikerbnb adventure experiences.  If there is an incident involving you or your motorcycle, we will do as much as we can to ensure that you can continue to enjoy your holiday.

Motorcycle Rental from Royal Enfield

We are proud to offer a fleet of Royal Enfield motorcycles for hire from our Edinburgh workshop. If you are interested in hiring a bike for one of our upcoming tours, please check out our rental page for competitively priced and reliable bikes across the 2023 Royal Enfield lineup.

We strive to balance the best interests of our riders and the financial wellbeing of our small business. The following Cancellation Policies establishes clear timeframes to help ensure we are equipped to run a high-quality event and meet obligations to our partners, vendors and accommodation providers, while balancing any unexpected circumstances that may arise. We appreciate that sometimes circumstances outside of our control can necessitate last minute changes. If you do need to cancel your spot on the Highland Scramble or motorcycle rental, we would like to first offer you a credit of your booking fee (less the deposit and any ticket increases) toward a future reservation with us. If this is not possible, the following table outlines our official Cancellation Policy for the 2022 riding season. If you have any questions or concerns about cancelling or postponing your reservation, please make an enquiry with a member of staff by emailing us at [email protected] .

The Highland Scramble features Bikerbnb’s unique motorcycle-friendly accommodation. During the ride we will stay in hand-picked accommodation that is secure and especially suited for motorcycle travelers. Depending on the tour, we will stay in a mix of accommodation from yurts to Scottish country estates, bed & breakfasts and pods.

We try to price our trips fairly to accommodate different budgets. The Highland Scramble takes a lot of consideration, planning, coordination and time! The knowledge and experience of the organisers is second to none and every detail is carefully collaborated. From unique locations, specialised kit, great food, support vehicle, insurance, content producers, chefs, and experienced staff, we offer an incredibly competitive product compared to other tour operators.

The route is designed to explore the best that Scotland has to offer.  While some roads will be more challenging than others,  the ultimate goal is to go at your own pace and enjoy the beautiful scenes along the way. You may feel you want to push out of the comfort zone but we encourage you to ride to a level you feel safe and comfortable with.

We aim to ride up to 200 miles per day, depending on the type of roads we take. On the smaller twisty roads, we will allocate more time to enjoy the scenery!  We anticipate each leg of the journey should approximate 5-6 hours of riding, with breaks in between for lunch and coffee. Evening meals are aimed to be served around 8:00pm.

Please do and shout from the roof tops! Each ride will be allocated a unique hashtag for sharing and following.

Unfortunately no, we can only offer accommodation, food and support to those who have paid in full for the tickets in advance.

The Highland Scramble is not designed for the faint hearted. If weather conditions are abysmal then we will hold tight for a prolonged pitstop, however, we are not ‘the sunshine only’ club. Weather conditions that pose safety issues to our riders will be taken into account but the bottom line is, come fully prepared and hope for the best!

Everyone participating will be at different levels of riding ability. If you wish to go ahead or take your time, the route will be shared with you on a group chat. We will also send you the route in advance for you to study. The support vehicle is only a phone call away so don’t panic.

Our support vehicle will be there to help along the way. Equipped with tools and knowledge, we can assist with a roadside repair or pop the bike in the back. You can then be taken to the final destination of the day or taken to a local garage and check in somewhere, the choice is yours.

You will be responsible for paying for your own fuel and any additional refreshments along the way. You will also need to pay for lunch and alcohol. The rest is sorted by your Bikerbnb.

You’ll still need to purchase individual tickets to cover both of your accommodation and food costs. The tickets are sold per person, not per bike.

We have limited spaces on each scramble so we can only sell tickets for set dates. If you need to change a date, we will need to know in advance to see if we can accommodate you on a preferred date, but we cannot guarantee a spot.

Yes, please speak to a member of the team for more info by contacting [email protected] or checking out our rental page featuring Royal Enfield motorcycles.

Go ahead! Stop reading! Just buy a ticket already through our web shop.

You leave Glasgow to follow one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland: Loch Lomond. Then following the valley of Glen Coe and its superb mountains you will reach Loch Linnhe which you will cross with the ferry to reach the peninsula of Glen Tarbert. The typical single track road of Scotland will lead you to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Scotland.

Day 3 - Fort William - Muir of Ord

Day 4 - Muir of Ord - John O'Groat

You ride north to reach Scotland's most northerly point at John O'Groat where you can have your photo taken at the foot of the sign. Along the way you will visit the Glenmorrangie distillery and taste the famous Scotch whisky. Don't miss Dunrobin Castle and wander the ruins of Sinclair Castle at Noss Point.

Day 5 - John O'Groat - Ullapool

Stop at Dunnet Head Lighthouse to enjoy the view before riding along the north coast and its many bays with turquoise waters that can remind you of the Caribbean. From Durness you will ride on narrow single-lane roads so emblematic of the Highlands. You can stroll along the banks of Loch Assynt and the Ardvreck Castle before reaching the small harbour of Ullapool on the shores of Loch Broom.

Day 6 - Ullapool - Kyle of Lochalsch

Start your day at Measach Falls, then you'll take one of the most beautiful roads in the Highlands to Gruinard bay where you'll probably come across more sheep than people. It is then through Glen Torridon that you will reach the charming village of Applecross. All you have to do is travel the few kilometers of the impressive Beleach Na Ba road to reach Kyle of Lochalch, your base camp to explore the Isle of Skye.

Day 7 - Isle of Skye

Today you can explore the entire Isle of Skye and enjoy its many sites: the Kilt Rock waterfall, the sharp peaks of the Old Man of Storr or even the ruins of Duntulm Castle. But it is above all the magnificent road that crosses the mountains of Quiraing that will mark you. To finish your loop, take the opportunity to stop at a sheepskin store to find the skin that will cover your motorcycle saddle for your greatest comfort.

Day 8 - Kyle of Lochalsch - Aviemore

You head east and will admire Eilean Donan Castle on Loch duich. Then after crossing Loch Lochy again you will reach Cairn Gorm National Park.

Day 9 - Aviemore - Pitlochry

You leave the national park for the Spey valley following the Lecht road known for its many whiskey distilleries including the famous Glenlivet. Then you will have the opportunity to admire the castles of this region: Corgarff, the royal residence of Balmoral, and Braemar. Finally, through the Grampians Mountains and Devil's Elbow Pass you will again reach the verdant plains.

Day 10 - Pitlochry - Edimbourg

On this short motorcycle day ride you will reach Edinburgh in a few hours through Stirling and the impressive Wallace monument so important for the Scottish people and enjoy a stop at the foot of the famous Unesco-listed Forth Bridge railway bridge.

Day 11 - Edimbourg

You will need a good day to come to discover all the treasures of the beautiful city of Edinburgh. The city is the most visited city in the UK after London. Don't miss the Carlton hill park and its superb view of the city as well as the castle which dominates the old town in relief.

motorcycle tour map of scotland

Riding through Scotland on a motorcycle is like riding on the wildest and most remote roads in Europe. The Highland region with its single track roads, these famous roads will offer you unique landscapes and incredible beauty whatever the weather. You will be able to follow the famous North Coast 500 , this scenic route which will make you discover all the treasures of this coastal route of the Highlands.

Here the weather changes very quickly and gives special colors and atmospheres to the landscapes. You will navigate between sea, lakes and mountains and the omnipresence of water either by following the coast and its numerous fjords or by following the Lochs routes , will be your common thread of this motorcycle road trip on Scottish land. .

Scotland is also a land of warm and welcoming people whose history has always been close to France. Take the opportunity to stop occasionally in the villages to attend some Highlands Games, these unique strength games in Scotland or even the herding dog competition and immerse yourself in the local life of these picturesque little villages where the there is often more sheeps than inhabitants.

You can relive the history of Scotland with its many castles that are spread along your itinerary :  Balmoral, Sinclair, Urhquart, Eilean Donan, Dunrobin and many others; but above all the strength and beauty of nature and its relief that impresses the traveler and commands respect. If Scottish Whiskeys are so famous around the world it’s because Scotland has the purest waters in Europe. Finally, stroll through the heart of the 2nd most visited city in the United Kingdom: Edinburgh, this human-sized capital steeped in history and rich in numerous monuments will delight you ...

Prepare yourself to feel four seasons on the same day and to fall in love with this Celtic country that will leave a lasting impression on you.

Motorcycle Touring in Scotland

Riding a motorcycle in Scotland is an unforgettable experience, and there are several reasons why someone would want to choose this beautiful country for a motorcycle tour.

Stunning scenery – Scotland is renowned for its breath-taking landscapes, from the rugged Highlands to the serene Lowlands. Riders will be treated to a diverse range of scenery, including dramatic mountains, pristine lochs, coastal roads, and picturesque glens. The ever-changing scenery ensures that every turn brings a new and awe-inspiring vista.

Twisty roads – Scotland is a motorcyclist’s dream with its winding, twisty roads that carve through the countryside. These roads offer a thrilling and challenging ride, perfect for those who love the thrill of cornering and navigating diverse terrain.

Rich history and culture – Scotland is steeped in history and culture. Riders can explore ancient castles, visit historic sites, and experience the warm hospitality of the Scottish people. The sense of history in the air adds depth to the riding experience.

Food and drink – Scotland is famous for its whisky, and there’s no better way to experience it than by touring a whisky distillery along your route. Additionally, Scottish cuisine offers a delicious array of flavours, from world renowned freshly caught seafood and of course the obligatory haggis, amongst many other local specialities.

Wildlife – Scotland’s natural beauty is also home to diverse wildlife. Riders may encounter cows, sheep, deer, birds of prey, and even seals along the coast. The chance to connect with nature is a unique aspect of riding in Scotland.

Challenging weather – Scotland’s weather can be unpredictable, but that’s part of the adventure. Riders should be prepared for rain, fog, and sunshine, sometimes all in one day! Adapting to varying weather conditions adds an exciting element to the journey.

People – Scotland is known for the warm and friendly nature of its people. The Scottish are renowned for their hospitality, approachability, and willingness to engage with visitors.

Peace and solitude – While Scotland offers plenty of tourist attractions, it’s also possible to find remote and peaceful stretches of road where you’ll feel like you have the world to yourself. The tranquility of the Scottish countryside can be a balm for the soul.

In summary, Scotland is a motorcycling paradise because of its incredible natural beauty, challenging roads, rich culture and history, unique culinary experiences, and the opportunity for adventure and people. Anyone who loves riding and appreciates the great outdoors is bound to fall in love with Scotland during their motorcycle tour.

5 of the Best Motorcycle Routes in Scotland

Glen quaich.

  • Rough miles: 12 miles
  • Days: 30 minutes

Glen Quaich Road is a short scenic route in Scotland that stretches from Amulree to Kenmore. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and is a relatively unknown route, enjoyed by motorcyclists and cyclists and the occasional tourist looking to explore the picturesque Scottish Highlands.

Best Scotland Motorcycle Routes

The road meanders through Glen Quaich, a remote and unspoiled glen surrounded by lush hills, forests, and the shimmering waters of Loch Freuchie. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular, with opportunities to spot wildlife, including deer and various bird species.

Glen Quaich Road offers countless opportunities for photography, particularly during autumn when the foliage turns vibrant shades of purple and gold. The surrounding hills and the loch provide stunning backdrops for capturing the natural beauty of the area.

The road ultimately leads to the village of Kenmore, which is situated on the shores of Loch Tay. Kenmore is a charming village known for its historic buildings, including the Taymouth Castle, and offers a range of amenities, including dining options and accommodation.

Watch out for

The road is known for its narrow and winding nature, making it a thrilling route for motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts. It features numerous hairpin turns and elevation changes, adding an element of excitement for those who enjoy challenging riding experiences.

The road can be challenging in adverse weather conditions, particularly during the winter months when it may become icy or snow-covered. It’s advisable to check weather conditions and road closures before embarking on this route.

Here’s a downloadable Google Map of the route.

Where to stay

Kenmore has accommodation, as does nearby Aberfeldy with lots more along Loch Tay.

Fortingall Hotel in stunning Glen Lyon is a rather special place with the oldest tree in the world in the adjacent churchyard.

The view at the peak of the climb offers tremendous 360 views.

The Boathouse Kitchen & Bar on Loch Tay is a superb place to stop for lunch.

The Kenmore Hotel is reputedly the oldest Inn in Scotland (1564) which has some “graffiti” left in 1700s by our National Bard, Robbie Burns, still on display by the bar.

On the outskirts of nearby Crieff, Glenturret Distillery is reputedly Scotland’s oldest distillery, with a café and restaurant as well as tours and a shop available.

Bonus Route: If you have plenty of time (another 2 ½ hours+), head to Rannoch Station (and it’s unique Tea Room ), via the Braes of Foss road, along the south side of Loch Rannoch. Heading to Pitlochry along the road north of Loch Tummel will round this run off nicely.

Mam Ratagan Pass

  • Rough miles: 9 miles
  • Days: 20 minutes

Mam Ratagan, also known as Mam Ratagan Pass, is a mountain pass in the Scottish Highlands, located near the village of Ratagan in the western part of Scotland. From a motorcyclist’s perspective, Mam Ratagan offers a thrilling and memorable riding experience.

Best Scotland Motorcycle Routes

Mam Ratagan Pass is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. As a motorcyclist, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Five Sisters of Kintail, and the nearby Loch Duich. The dramatic and rugged landscape provides a visually stunning backdrop to your ride.

The road through Mam Ratagan Pass is characterized by tight twists, turns, and elevation changes. It’s a challenging and winding route that demands good riding skills and attention to the road. The serpentine road takes you through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, making it an exhilarating ride.

Due to the challenging terrain and winding roads, Mam Ratagan Pass is popular among motorcyclists who enjoy technical riding. It’s a route that allows riders to fully engage with their machines and hone their cornering skills.

The stunning vistas along the pass provide numerous opportunities for photography. You’ll want to stop at various points to capture the breathtaking views of the mountains, the loch, and the lush Scottish countryside.

Mam Ratagan Pass offers motorcyclists a thrilling and challenging ride through some of the most stunning landscapes in the Scottish Highlands. It’s a route that combines technical riding with awe-inspiring scenery, making it a must-visit destination for motorcycle enthusiasts looking for a memorable riding experience in Scotland.

Don’t miss

The views back over the 5 sisters of Kintail – a mountain range which is a popular destination for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts, and it is known for its exceptional natural beauty. The nearby Eilean Donan Castle and Glenelg Brochs is also a must.

Our favourite place is the Glenelg Inn . You can also camp on the beach.

Catch the lovely Skye Ferry , the MV Glenachulish (the last hand turned ferry in the world) over to the Isle of Skye.

Eat in the Glenelg Inn , if you are staying in the area. Watch the lovely video on the website to get an idea of the surroundings (filmed by yours truly).

Join this route with the next route (Kylerhea Pass), onto Skye.

Bonus route: Take a run all the way down to Sheena’s Tea Hut at Corran, if time allows – more great roads with splendid views over to Skye!

Kylerhea Pass

Kylerhea Pass is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. As a motorcyclist, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Loch Alsh, the mainland of Scotland, and the surrounding mountains. The scenic backdrop provides an awe-inspiring setting for your ride.

Best Scotland Motorcycle Routes

The pass is characterized by narrow and winding roads with steep gradients and sharp turns. These challenging elements make it an exciting and technically demanding route for motorcyclists who enjoy twisty and hilly roads.

Riding through Kylerhea Pass is a sensory delight. The changing scenery and elevation add to the sensory experience.

The pass is relatively remote and less travelled compared to some other routes on Skye, making it a peaceful and tranquil ride. You’ll often find yourself surrounded by the solitude and beauty of the Scottish countryside.

The spectacular views along Kylerhea Pass provide excellent opportunities for photography. Be sure to stop at designated viewpoints to capture the stunning landscapes and the contrast between the rugged terrain and the calm waters of the loch.

Like much of Scotland, the weather on Skye can be unpredictable. It’s essential to check the weather forecast and be prepared for changing conditions, especially if you plan to ride Kylerhea Pass, as it can become challenging in adverse weather.

It can be a busy road as many others want to experience the ferry – going the other way, so take your time on the single track roads.

The otter hide and the sight of the Cuillin Mountain range on Skye that greets you as you climb over the pass.

There are many options for accommodation on Skye. Take a look at Isle of Skye on Booking.com for an idea of prices and availability.

Watch out for oncoming traffic as they are also in a hurry to catch the ferry going the opposite way! Take a run down to Elgol and see the Cuillins from a completely different perspective.

  • Rough miles: 33 miles
  • Time: 80 minutes

Begin your journey in Killin, a quaint village located at the western end of Loch Tay. Killin offers a peaceful and scenic starting point for your ride, surrounded by natural beauty.

Best Scotland Motorcycle Routes

As you head east from Killin, along the northern side of Loch Tay, you’ll turn left to enter Glen Lyon, often referred to as Scotland’s longest and most beautiful glen – described by Sir Walter Scott as the “the longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland”.

The road takes you through a narrow valley flanked by towering mountains, providing a sense of isolation and natural splendour.

The route offers a thrilling riding experience with numerous bends and curves that wind through the valley, providing motorcyclists with an exciting and challenging ride.

The road is narrow and winding, at points. It features numerous turns and elevation changes, adding an element of excitement for those who enjoy challenging riding experiences.

  • The Falls of Dochart in Killin.
  • Glenlyon Tearoom (the old Post Office).
  • The Falls of Allt da Ghob – blink and you’ll miss it!

Killin, Fortingall and Kenmore all have accommodation. There are many campsites and other accommodation options along Loch Tay.

A slight detour takes you to Fortingall with the oldest tree in the world.

Create a full loop by returning along the south side of Loch Tay – all the way back to Killin – or start your journey this way if you are already in Kenmore.

Great artisan coffee at Glen Lyon Coffee in nearby Aberfeldy.

Hook in the bonus route from the Glen Quaich Route to make this a longer run.

Calum’s Road

  • Rough miles: 10.5 miles each way from Clachan to Arnish (end of public road). The last mile and ¾ being Calum’s Road.
  •  Time : 30 minutes each way.

Calum’s Road is more than just a little off the beaten track, but well worth the effort, if you have the time.

Best Scotland Motorcycle Routes

Catch the ferry from Sconser on Skye to Churchton Bay on Raasay and head north.

The roads on Raasay are all single track but it is perfectly possible to travel the length of the island and back again without coming across another vehicle.

Calum’s Road is renowned for its remarkable history. It was hand-built by a local resident named Calum MacLeod, who tirelessly constructed the road over several decades, using only hand tools. His determination and dedication turned it into an inspiring testament to human resilience.

The road winds through the rugged and remote landscapes of Raasay, offering motorcyclists a sense of isolation and tranquillity. It’s a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands.

While the road is navigable by motorcycles, it is not a smooth road. It features uneven surfaces, gravel sections, and some steep gradients. You’ll need to exercise caution and ensure your bike is suited for these conditions.

Calum’s Road provides fantastic views of the Isle of Skye and the surrounding sea. The combination of coastal panoramas and mountain vistas makes it a paradise for photography and taking in the scenery.

Riding along Calum’s Road is a true adventure. You’ll have the opportunity to explore remote corners of Raasay and enjoy the solitude of this less-travelled route. It’s a destination that beckons to those who seek a sense of exploration and discovery.

Along the way, you may encounter historical landmarks such as abandoned crofts and remnants of traditional island life. These sites offer a glimpse into the island’s past and add depth to your journey.

The road is narrow and winding, at points, making it a thrilling route for motorcyclists. It features numerous turns and elevation changes, adding an element of excitement for those who enjoy challenging riding experiences.

Raasay Distillery . Take a tour to learn about the whisky-making process and enjoy a tasting of Raasay’s own single malt whisky.

Explore the ruins of Brochel Castle , an ancient fortress with a fascinating history. Additionally, visit the ruins of Raasay House , once a grand mansion and now an ongoing restoration project.

Raasay House  offers a range of different types of accommodation, an excellent cafe, a bar, and a restaurant for evening dining. It also serves as an outdoor activities centre.

Make sure you visit the wonderfully tranquil ruins of  St Maol-luag’s Chapel,  and keep a lookout for the  Raasay Pictish Stone,  beside the public road just to the north-west of Raasay House.

Read Roger Hutchinson’s bestselling 2006 book  “Calum’s Road” before going and you’ll appreciate the amazing efforts behind this road even more.

Nice to see Scotland spotlighted. The roads mentioned in the Highlands (I’m in Inverness) are all good ‘uns, but I would have certainly mentioned the Applecross peninsular and Bealach na Ba and on through Torridon as bettering most around here, and also further north the so-called Wee Mad Road south of Lochinver and then on through Drumbeg as being pretty epic. For glorious mountains and beach scenery the loop through Gairloch is difficult to beat, but there are also hidden gems like the road through Strath Don which is so pretty, and you can take a break at Goodbrand and Ross for a cuppa and some cake Nd tyre kicking at the weekend before climbing high up over the Lecht in the Cairngorms to Tomintoul, before descending down to the beautiful Spey Valley. I could go on, Scotland is a great biking destination, but bring yer wet weather gear just in case.

PS Unless it’s been bought, Sheena’s Tea Hut is closed, which is a massive loss, but the ride in is amazing anyway.

Hi Richard,

thanks for commenting. I couldn’t agree more, those are great roads, but I was trying to highlight some more of the “off the beaten track” roads that are typically missed by most.

On our tours, we join most all of your suggestions with those above (other than Raasay) for a spectacular tour.

Hope to see you on the roads somewhere sometime!

Cheers Martin…

Good afternoon Is there a motorcycle route based on or around Lockerbie that is called something like the West Coast 350, and if so, where can I find an appropriate map etc

there is the South West Coastal 300, which I think is what you are after.

https://www.visitscotland.com/travel-planning/getting-around/driving/route-planner/south-west-coastal-300-route/

Excellent article and thank you very much. Will be in touch. David

Thanks David,

look forward to catching up!

Hi Many thanks for great ideas. Have you ever put somthing together if you should fly in to Edinborough, rent a bike and spend up to 1 week exploring the north?

I hope to fly in from Norway if I manage to put something together.

Hi Oeivind,

that’s what we’ve been doing for over a decade now at motojoe.co.uk.

We have a library of tours, depending on time available. We can also create bespoke tours, tailored to your needs. Some people enjoy long days on the bike and others not so much.

There’s guided, self-guided and unguided options to choose from.

We can do all the logistics for you or you can simply rent a motorcycle and head off.

Our most popular option is when our customers fly in, pick up their preferred bike, follow the pink line on the preprogrammed Sat Nav and enjoy the accommodation we set up for you.

Please do let us know if we can help.

I hope you enjoy all Scotland has to offer if and when you do make it to Scotland!

There is quite a contrast in houses as we move from east to west coast. In Yorkshire limestone prevails giving the traditional houses a yellowish hue complimented by red pantiles roofs whilst over in Cumbria Slate is the favoured building material which give blue, grey and greenish colours to the traditional properties. This stunning, one of the most northern corners of one of the most northern countries in Europe, is a place steeped in history, tradition, and rural charm. Scotland is also a place of genuine hospitality, welcoming people, unspoiled nature, and fantastic biking roads.

You’ll spend this enjoyable holiday meandering through panoramic landscapes taking in the breathtaking scenery of lochs, highlands and islands. Your route on this fantastic Scottish Highlands self-guided motorcycle-tour will take you along the ancient highways and byways, passing through rolling highland mountains patched with thick forests and heather. You’ll also visit old market towns, fishing villages, famous Scottish castles, whisky distilleries, national parks, and tourist attractions. These include Eilean Donan Castle, Dunvegan Castle and Gardens, Portree, Old Man of Storr, John o’ Groats, Balmoral Castle, Dalwhinnie Whisky Distillery, Rannoch Moor and Cairngorms National Park.

Your five host hotels at each destination are designed, decorated and furnished in a traditional highland style with cosy rooms and a welcoming atmosphere. After working up your appetites with great rides each day, you’ll return to your hotels to reflect on daily events over delicious evening meals and perhaps a dram or two of whisky.

Glencoe Valley is the perfect starting point for this fantastic self guided motorcycle tour. With more history, culture, natural beauty and great biking roads than really seem fair, it’s easy to see why the British bikers would prefer to keep this wonderful place their little secret if they could. From your base hotel, you’ll be able to explore this stunning region of rugged mountain peaks, deep valleys, peaty brown rivers, vast lochs and plummeting waterfalls. The scenery along the way is truly magnificent whether you’re looking for a fun ride or wish to explore some of the most iconic locations. Either way, Glencoe showcases the Scottish Highlands in all its splendour.

Next, you’ll continue your Scottish Highlands self-guided motorcycle-tour by riding some fantastic biking roads and moving on to one of Scotland’s most captivating islands. Journeying to Scotland’s west coast and arriving at the Isle of Sky may feel like coming somewhere where there is nothing beyond. While enjoying the warm island hospitality, you’ll explore some of the most spectacular coastal landscapes of this beautiful part of this beautiful country. Not often and perhaps nowhere else will you find such a blend of unspoilt nature, jaw-dropping Jurassic scenery, endless seascapes, tranquil white beaches and a wealth of arts, crafts, Gaelic language and Celtic culture.

From the Isle of Sky, following the legendary biking road – NC500, you’ll head towards Ullapool, your next destination.  This picturesque fishing town is nestled on the shores of Lochbroom, making it the perfect base for the next two nights. While here, you’ll have an opportunity to take advantage of some of the wildlife boat cruises available. If you are fortunate with the weather, you’ll take in the sites of some of Scotland’s most natural coastlines and wildlife. Fauna such as white-tailed eagles, seals, and dolphins frequent the seas around Ullapool.

Still guided by the twisty NC500, you’ll head towards the most northerly town in mainland Scotland and your next destination. Thurso is a hive of charming traditional restaurants, bars, cafés, shops and many other ‘must-sees’. This beautiful, most northerly town is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding most northerly countryside, including a visit to the most northerly point of the most northerly part of mainland Great Britain – John o’Groats.

You’ll conclude this fantastic Scottish Highlands self-guided motorcycle-tour by staying at a traditional highland hotel in the charming town of Pitlochry. Pitlochry is a delightful Victorian town located in the heart of the highlands, making it an excellent base for exploring the beautiful Rannoch region. It is also within a comfortable day ride distance to many major tourist attractions and scenic biking routes. This part of the tour perfectly combines visits to famous Royal castles and whisky distilleries with riding great biking roads through the majestic Cairngorms National Park.

Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour

Day 1 – Arrival at the hotel in Glencoe

Today is the start of your Scotland self guided motorcycle tour. So plan your route, get up nice and early, have breakfast, load your bike and depart for the beautiful lochside town of Glencoe.

You’ll be staying in a comfortable hotel situated in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. If you prefer to arrive at the hotel earlier to settle in, the check-in usually starts at 14.00ish.

Day 2 – Free day or optional day ride ( Approx. 200 miles)

Following a hearty breakfast, the first optional day ride on our Scotland self guided motorcycle tour will take you across the stunning rural countryside, along the shimmering lochs and through traditional highland towns and villages.

The ride will be a combination of great biking A roads, minor country roads, and even less minor mountain highways and byways. There are plenty of places for refreshment breaks and several optional visits to tourist attractions to keep it interesting.

You’ll commence your journey by following the shores of Loch Leven, crossing the famous Ballacullish Iron Bridge and continuing along the fantastic forest-fringed biking road towards our first port of call – Fort William. Fort William is surrounded by sandy beaches and dramatic hills, making it a perfect place for a bit of stroll and perhaps the first post-breakfast cup of coffee. Fort William is also a mecca for all sorts of outdoorsy people. So, the more fit and energetic ones may not be able to resist the temptation to have a quick run up Ben Nevis (if you fall for that one, you’ll fall for anything).

Next, if you fancy it, you’ll have the option of visiting Invergarry Castle. The visit will take you back to the times of Braveheart, the times when the Chieftans of the Clan MacDonell of Glengarry ruled the region.

You’ll arrive at Fort Augustus and the legendary Loch Ness as you continue with your ride. Here, suppose the rightful hierarchy of road travellers is observed and respected – bikes have priority over cyclists, cars, campervans, coaches – especially coaches… and everybody else, for that matter. In that case, you should be able to park your bikes in front of the riverside café by the lock and have a cup of well-deserved coffee and a scone or two with mandatory jam and cream. And perhaps with a bit of luck, you might even see Nessie.

On the return leg of your ride, pending on time and your inquisitive tendency, you can opt to visit the famous Tomatin Whisky Distillery and have another pit stop at the renowned highland ski resort of Aviemore. Or you can ride directly back to the hotel.

Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour

Day 3 – Glen to Uig (Approx. 140 miles)

Today, your Scotland self guided motorcycle tours continues to the next destination. You’ll be departing from one of the most beautiful lochs in the highlands and heading towards one of the most beautiful islands on the west coast – Isle of Sky. Your glorious journey includes riding through the breathtaking scenery that will keep getting more stunning with each twist of the throttle.

The Isle of Sky is home to some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes. Its mountain ranges, dramatic coastline, captivating history, and miles of great biking roads make it a perfect destination for our next base.

You can stop to visit one of the Scotlands most visited and recognised castles, Eilean Donan Castle. Situated on an island overlooking the meeting point of Loch Alsh, Loch Long and Loch Duich, it is also one of the most photographed castles in the world. The castle is a convenient place for us, bikers, to stop distance-wise. It has motorcycle-allocated parking, café and of course, toilets.

You should arrive at your comfortable hotel just in time to get ready for a well deserved afternoon drink.

Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour

Day 4 – Optional day ride or boat trip ( Approx. 90 miles)

Today is your second day off on the Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour. You’ll have a choice of parking your bike and relaxing for a day. Or going for a half a day ride around the island.

Those who don’t fancy riding but would prefer to do something can join one of the popular wildlife boat excursions. During the trip, you should be able to see puffins, white-tailed sea eagles, dolphins, minke whales, basking sharks, and if you are lucky orcas (apparently, if you do see orcas, that day you should buy a lottery ticket as well).

The more energetic ones who would prefer to go for a spin may opt to follow our suggested ride. The sort of circular route around the island we’ll include the visits to the traditional fishing town of Portree, the rugged rock formation of Old Man of Storr and an award-winning castle of Dunvegan.

To start with, following some great traffic-free coastal roads, accompanied by the stunning sea and mountain scenery, you’ll arrive at the first port of call. The mini-Dolomites-looking Old Man of Storr is a large pinnacle of rock that dominates the sky and can be seen for miles around. The Old Man of Storr is also one of the most photographed landscapes on the island.

Situated on the east side of Isle of Sky, Portree is the island’s capital and your second destination. The town was created by Lord MacDonald as a fishing port and is only about 200 years old. But with its charming atmosphere and many cafés and restaurants overlooking a sheltered bay, it is a perfect spot for a bit of stroll and a cup of coffee.

You’ll bring your ride to its conclusion by visiting the Highland estate steeped in history and clan legends, Dunvegan Castle and Gardens. After having a look around and a cup of coffee, a leisurely ride will take you back to your hotel just in time for an afternoon drink.

Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour

Day 5 – Uig to Ullapool ( Approx. 180 miles)

Day five of your Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour is marked by a great ride along the first section of the legendary biking road – NC500. Today’s journey is also a great reminder of how fortunate the Brtish bikers are to have such an excellent biking country on their doorstep. The 500 miles (516 to be exact) of NC500 brings together stunning coastal scenery of endless seas, white sandy beaches, wild mountains and tiny fishing villages affording a wealth of unforgettable biking experiences.

Your destination for today is the rustic coastal town of Ullapool. The town is nestled on the shores of Lochbroom, one of the least spoilt natural environments in the UK. The region surrounding Ullapool is often described as a paradise with a ‘Scandinavian twinkle in winter and Canadian-style beauty in summer’.

Your hotel will welcome you with comfortable rooms and a traditional evening meal.

Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour

Day 6 – Free day or optional boat trip (Approx. 140 miles)

Today is another day off on your Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour. There are several options for how you can use your free time.

Some might be tempted to explore the town on foot. Some might join a boat trip to Loch Broom and the Summer Isles. The Summer Isles are famed for their outstanding beauty. The isles range from little more than a pile of rocks sticking out of the sea to the full-size inhabited Tanera Mor island. The isles and the waters surrounding them are home to many species of sea birds, eagles, porpoise, dolphins, whales and seals. So “ahoy shipmate”, get your sea legs steady, your camera ready and enjoy the day at the sea.

There are always some who prefer to go for a spin. Our proposed ride will take you across the highlands towards another traditional fishing town of Tain. Time permitting, in Tain, you’ll have an opportunity to visit the world-famous Glenmorangie Whisky Distillery. As you start looping it around following some fantastic biking roads, once again, you’ll cross the highlands, passing the peaty brown waters of Loch Glascarnoch, Loch Droma and Loch Broom, you’ll return to the hotel.

Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour

Day 7 – Ullapool to Thurso ( Approx. 140 miles)

Today your Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour continues to your next destination. After a hearty Scottish breakfast, you’ll depart Ullapool in Highlands and head towards Thurso, also in Highlands. However, the Caithness region surrounding Thurso, known for its vast open spaces and big changeable skies, is frequently referred to ‘as lowlands beyond Highlands.

Today’s mileage is not huge, allowing you to take your time to enjoy a relaxing ride along another section of the iconic NC500, stop as often as you like and take in the majestic scenery. On today’s route, the navigation is simple – you’ll keep the sea on your left and the land on your right, and you can’t go wrong (well, we hope).

You should arrive at your comfortable hotel just in time for an afternoon drink.

guided motorbike tours scotland

Day 8 – Free day or optional day ride (Approx. 80 miles)

Today’s day off on your Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour is all about one ride – a visit to the northern-most point of the UK mainland, John O’Groats. It is fair to say that most bikers only heard of John o’ Groats because of its iconic sticker-covered signpost overlooking the harbour. Some would even question that – is it worth riding all the way to this wind-swept far corner just to get a photo of a signpost? However, it is a major tick-the-box biking destination and stopping-off point on the NC500.

Especially if this ride can be twinned with a previous or future trip to its counterpart, Lands End in Cornwall, so, today’s ride offers a perfect opportunity to poke that selfie stick at the sign and enhance your biking portfolio. Therefore, for that reason alone, it’s definitely worth it. From John O’Groats, you’ll follow the coast road for a little while, explore the beautiful Caithness coastline, loop it around and return to your hotel.

Those who don’t fancy riding or had previously visited John O’Groats can park their bikes and explore Thurso on foot. The town centre is a hive of all sorts of traditional Scottish shops, eateries, cafés, bars and restaurants. There are also many other ‘must-sees and dos’ in the town centre, around the Thurso Bridge and along the River. If you are interested in history, the famous well-house of Meadow Well and a fine public library are worth a visit.

Day 9 – Thurso to Pitlochry (Approx. 200 miles)

Today is your last transit day to the final destination of your Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour. The remaining section of the iconic NC500 will be guide you to the Victorian Highland town of Pitlochry. On your way, you’ll be surrounded by stunning coastal and mountain scenery, passing through many traditional fishing villages and charming market towns.

You’ll also cross over three long magnificent bridges, Dornoch Firth Bridge, Cromarty Bridge and Kessock Bridge, before leaving the coast behind and once again heading into the Highlands. To mark the end of this part of your tour in style, you can stop for a break in Inverness, the starting and finishing point of the legendary NC500.

Your traditional Highland hotel will welcome you with a comfortable room and a gourmet evening meal.

guided motorbike tours scotland

Day 10 – Free day or optional day ride (Approx. 160 miles)

Today is a good day to celebrate the last day ride of your Scottish Highlands self guided motorcycle tour and get high (high on riding, that is). You’ll take the old military road and ride over the narrow, twisty Cairnwell Pass. It is the highest main road in the United Kingdom. It reaches a dizzying height of 2199 ft (670m).

From here, you’ll continue towards the ski area of Glenshee, Braemar and eventually end up at the Royal Balmoral Castle. The castle has been the Scottish home to the Royal Family since 1852. It has fantastic grounds, gardens, exhibitions, a gift shop and a café. The Royal Lochnagar Distillery is less than a mile away and is open to visitors. The rest of the ride, you’ll spend meandering along the Highland highways and byways, stopping as often as you fancy. And when you have enough, you’ll return to the hotel.

If you prefer to stay more local, two famous whisky distilleries are nearby. The Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries and has a fantastic visitor centre. The Edrador is a micro-distillery. The last time we visited, only three people worked there.

If you happen to be a beer lover, you might find a working brewery at the Moulin Hotel a more attractive option.

March to October

Setting off from Edinburgh you head north, crossing the Forth Road Bridge (once one of the longest suspension bridges in the world) and on through the craggy peaks of the Cairngorms National Park, before reaching your overnight stay on the banks of Loch Ness. Extra nights can be booked pre/post tour for those wishing to explore the Scottish capital.

After searching for 'Nessie', you continue north along the fast and flowing A9, before picking up the famous NC500 route. This spectacular bike-friendly road takes you past John o'Groats for the obligatory photo stop, as well as Dunnet Head, the true northernmost point of mainland Britain and home to a rather photogenic lighthouse. Tonight you'll stay on the north coast, with only a handful of islands between yourself and the Arctic Ocean, 1000 miles to the north.

Stunning Roads

Continuing west along the NC500 and eventually turning south as you follow the coast, you'll begin to see why we choose to ride the route anti-clockwise! The Breathtaking scenery of Scotland's west coast is a match for any in Europe. Deserted roads swoop past tiny, secluded bays before climbing up over coastal ridges to a view of bend after bend disappearing into the distance. Eventually you'll catch sight of the dramatic Cuillin Mountains dominating the landscape of the Isle of Skye, your home for the night. Skye merits a day all to itself and, should you choose, we can arrange an extra day here to allow you to explore this magnificent island more thoroughly.

From Skye, you once more ride the length of Loch Ness. Travelling along the Great Glen which splits the country, separating the Grampians from the Northwest Highlands. Then past Ben Nevis, the UK's highest point, before visiting the site of the massacre at Glencoe on the ride to your hotel near Loch Awe.

Scenery, roads and culture to rival any in Europe. Right on your doorstep!

Tour highlights

Loch Ness: Containing more water than all the lakes of England and Wales put together, it's not surprising that the murky depths of Loch Ness are surrounded by an aura of mystery. This enormous body of water is reputedly home to 'Nessie' the famous and elusive Loch Ness monster.

John o'Groats: Named for 15th century Dutchman Jan de Groot, this village on the northeastern tip of Great Britain is popular with tourists as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited British points on the mainland. An excellent photo and ice-cream stop.

We are missing everything about the trip...the motorcycle, the scenery, the food, the list goes on. We would like to thank everyone at team Magellan for organising our tour... We enjoyed the route you had set and the choice of hotels were something we looked forward to everyday!

The Isle of Skye: This rugged and mountainous island merits a day all to itself. Add an extra day to the tour if you have time to explore.

Talisker Whisky Distillery: Founded in 1830 and winner of the Best Single Malt In The World award 2007. You won't want to miss out on a cask tasting session!

Edinburgh: Not only Scotland's administrative, but also it's cultural capital, with a mixture of medieval and classical architecture and expansive views over the North Sea, the beautiful university town of Edinburgh just begs to be explored.

Stirling Castle: First recorded in 1110, imposing and precipitous Stirling Castle has stood witness to the victories, defeats and coronations of many Scottish monarchs. In recent years, a £12 million restoration project has returned it to it's former glory.

Energized, a brief ascent awaits with a treat of sweeping views of the valley, with the historic Ruthven Barracks standing prominently in the foreground. Take a moment to wander through the ruins, built in the early 1700s by George II's government after the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1715. As we navigate the road lined by dry stone walls and towering trees towards Aviemore, keep watch for red squirrels and listen for the sound of woodpeckers that are abundant along this route. This completes a "lollipop" shaped circuit. In your downtime, a tour of the local microbrewery in Aviemore is recommended. Read More

While a small section of this route may look familiar, riding it in reverse promises a brand new perspective. The road, flanked by magnificent oak trees, creates an overarching tunnel, allowing streaks of sunlight to filter through, often casting beautiful dappled shadows on the road ahead. The views down the valley on a clear day stretches for miles. A sharp right, hair-pinned steep descent takes you down to Feshiebridge, where the falls cascade into a crystal clear opening. The inviting waters offer a perfect opportunity for a wild swim - an unexpected delight where the decaying trees themselves are the captivating exhibits. As you pedal into Kincraig, there is a charming cafe stop, which by chance, is almost exactly the midpoint of the circular loop. A sharp climb out of Kincraig sets you on your return to Aviemore, which should be accompanied by a tailwind! Return to the guest house in time to check out at 11:00 AM. Read More

Your Day. You Decide.

Our self-guided vacations are designed to fit all types of travel styles. Whether you like to spend your time relaxing or on a non-stop adventure, you get to decide what your day looks like. Choose your mileage, itinerary, and experience level and leave the rest to us!

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • We do our best to avoid busy roadways as much as possible, however, urban riding and sections of busy roads are unavoidable for some segments of your rides.
  • Look right and keep left ! In Scotland, you cycle on the left side of the road along with traffic. Extra attention and caution are required as you ride, cross intersections, and enter traffic circles if this is the opposite side of the road that you are accustomed to.
  • Please note that the bikes you will ride on this trip are aluminium frames with mechanical shifting, which differs from our standard fleet. See the Bikes & Guides section for more information.

Before and After Your Trip

Edinburgh, UK

Reasons to stay in Scotland's capital abound. Since the 15th century, this city has served as the hub for Parliament, government, royalty, and judicial courts. Both the Old Town and New Town together have been maintained as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. See for yourself the majestic stone castles, bell towers, and universities. Full days can be dedicated to meandering the many neighborhoods, visiting art museums or galleries, and partaking in the classic Scottish sport of golf. (We can also provide recommendations for Perth, if you choose to stay there instead of Edinburgh. Please contact one of our Trip Consultants for details.) We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel in Edinburgh:
