The Best & Worst Times to Visit Cambodia (Updated for 2024)

What's the best time to visit Cambodia?

The best time to visit Cambodia is during the dry season from November to April, with November and December offering cooler temperatures and festive events like the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon.

February and March are the least humid months, ideal for exploring, although tourist areas get crowded due to Chinese and Vietnamese New Year celebrations. Book in advance for the festive period, especially around Christmas and New Year, to avoid the rush.

A country with two main seasons, Cambodia will either drench you with water or welcome you with devilishly high temperatures. But picking the wrong time to go will not only ruin your trip, it can be downright dangerous. But don’t worry — we’ll show you when to visit and more below.

The Overall Best Time to Visit Cambodia

The best time to visit Cambodia is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During this time, the country sees average temperatures in November, fluctuating between 85°F and 72°F.

November is the coldest month of the year, if we can ever refer to such temperatures as cold at all. December also has tropical temperatures with an average high of 86°F and an average low of 71°F.

It also has the shortest days of the entire year on average, at around 11 hours. During the festive period, the prices here are daylight robbery.

Christmas and New Year are tourist peak times, especially in places such as Angkor, and top-notch beach resorts are always reserved. So make sure to book well in advance if you’re planning on visiting Cambodia during this period.

A cool December event taking place in Cambodia is the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon . Runners can pick between several run options. Like December, January is a hot, dry season month with temperatures varying between 71.4°F and 88.7°F.

February is the month with the least rain in the capital. It sees temperatures ranging between 91°F and 73.4°F. After that, March welcomes visitors with temperatures hovering around 94.8°F on average during the day and 75.4°F at night.

With a relative humidity of around 71%, February and March are the least humid months. March is also one of the hottest Phnom Penh months. The January–March period is also a busy period festivity-wise.

Chinese and Vietnamese New Years’ celebrations mark this period, so places such as Siem Reap, the South Coast, and Phnom Penh see an influx of visitors. Be ready for some serious crowds, dragon-like street dances, and an unlike-anywhere-else type of festive cheer.

The cheapest time to go to Cambodia is from April to June. Unfortunately, the shoulder season means bad weather (scorching temperatures), hence the lower prices and discounted accommodation deals.

April visitors should get ready for temperatures fluctuating between 94.8°F and 77°F. Together with March, April is one of the hottest months. May is another hot month, with temperatures ranging between 93.7°F and 77.5°F.

Finally, June sees temperatures varying between 77°F and 92.3°F. It’s also the month with the longest days — there are around over 12 hours of daylight.

While the temperatures may be boiling, the plethora of events available during that period can help you freshen up. For the mid-April period, we recommend the Chaul Chnam Khmer event, the famous three-day celebration of Chaul Chnam Khmer (Cambodian New Year).

Locals clean their homes and exchange presents. The Chat Preah Nengkal, or the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, is a fantastic event as well.

Led by the Cambodian royal family members, the Chat Preah Nengkal is an ancient agricultural celebration that marks the start of the rice-growing season. In short, the ritual is as follows: it is believed that royal oxen predict the farming conditions for the upcoming year when presented with feed.

Finally, if you happen to be in Cambodia in May or June (the festival takes place on the eighth day of the fourth moon), you have to join the celebration of Buddha’s birth.

This is known as Buddha Day, or Visakha Puja. By paying homage to Buddha, travelers get to experience a tradition different from theirs and explore how distinct cultures pay their respects to notable individuals.

Least Busy Time to Visit Cambodia

The least busy time to visit Cambodia is in September or October. School season is on for the majority of places in the world, so families would have ended their visits by the end of August.

Those like you looking for a way to beat the crowds, though, should take advantage of these two months. However, there’s one caveat: fewer tourists visit Cambodia in September and October because these two months are — hands down — the rainiest.

Downpours are more substantial, and roads can be heavily impacted, which makes flooding a strong possibility. In September, the temperatures range between 90.1°F and 75.5°F.

It’s also the month with the least sunshine, with approximately 4.3 hours. October, although another tropical fall month, is the month with the heaviest rainfall (there’s rain for 24 days on average).

With a relative humidity of around 84%, these two months are the most humid months. However, festivals such as the Pchum Ben (the Festival of the Dead) make everything better.

This festival, in particular, is very similar to how the Christian’s All Souls’ Day is celebrated. Pchum Ben lasts for a few days and is known for a lot of chanting, ceremonies, and lively local temples.

Another notable November is the Bon Om Tuk , or the Water Festival, which celebrates King Jayavarman VII’s victory over the Chams.

This is a very lively time in Cambodia — from boat races and riverside parties to fireworks, ceremonies, and moon salutations, this large festival is full of surprises. Note that the Bon Om Tuk sometimes takes place in October.

Worst Time to Visit Cambodia

Being a year-round destination means you can always go to Cambodia and find suitable activities and attractions that correspond to the current season.

That said, if we really had to choose when not  to go, we’d stick with the country’s southwest monsoon period, which lasts from mid-May through early October.

The rain can impact your itinerary in many ways. For instance, if you’re traveling between cities such as Siem Reap, Battambang, Phnom Penh, or other villages, flooding is more than common, so you may need to change your travel plans on the spot.

What’s more, tourism numbers surge, as July and August are a period of annual school holidays for the majority of US and European families.

Younger backpackers are also quite frequent, thanks to their university holidays. We already covered most months in terms of temperatures, so you know what to expect.

We’ll just add that July has hot temperatures fluctuating between 90.5°F and 76.5°F, and then August sees temperatures varying between 90.5°F and 76.3°F. While the monsoon season may be unpleasant if you can’t stand wet weather, it has its perks too.

The scenery is iconic, and the countryside is stunningly green and abundant. Throughout the day, there are windows of sunlight and clear skies, so going during this period can still be worth it.

Sightseeing is possible in between rainy sessions, and this is one of the best times to visit important landmarks such as the Angkor Wat  or Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace. One look at these magnificent landmarks, and all the Cambodian rain will lose its relevance and power over you.

Things to Consider

While visiting Cambodia is safe overall, you can ensure that your trip is even safer and smoother by taking into account the following pieces of information:

  • The country is at a high risk of Zika virus transmission and mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever.
  • Get informed about the potential dress code before you visit specific places. For example, you mustn’t wear shorts or skirts above the knee or blouses/tops that are shoulder-revealing when you visit Angkor Wat.
  • While there are no laws that prevent LGBT sexual activities, public opinions may be somewhat mixed.
  • Caves, waterfalls, and lakes are especially prone to flooding during the country’s rainy season.
  • With a plethora of active landmines scattered across the country to this day, sticking to the main routes instead of wandering is more than advisable.
  • Not all ATMs accept all foreign cards, so do your research before you travel (we suggest checking with your banks for more accurate information).

Some Cambodians wryly observe that Cambodia has three seasons – hot, hotter and hottest – but in reality, there are distinct dry and wet seasons that define the harvest cycle and dramatically alter the character of the landscape in this fascinating Southeast Asian nation.

The dry season runs from November to May, and the "cool season" months of November to February are the most popular time to visit Cambodia due to milder temperatures. The countryside appears somewhat parched from February to May when daytime temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F ).

The wet season usually runs from June to October, coinciding with the southwest monsoon, but it's not necessarily a bad time to travel to Cambodia. It usually only rains heavily once a day towards sunset, the countryside is a blaze of green, and many hotels and resorts offer substantial discounts.

Here's a guide to the best times to visit Cambodia.

The high season (November–March) is the best time for good weather and exploring temples

Temperatures in Cambodia are much more Mediterranean during the "winter" months in Southeast Asia. The mercury occasionally drops below 20°C (68°F), forcing Cambodians to scramble for their coats and woollies. This makes exploring the temples much more pleasant, but it's also the most crowded time at Angkor . Lots of accommodation is booked out in advance, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period and during Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar, falling in January or February.

The shoulder season (July–August) is the best time for families

Although this is the middle of Cambodia's wet season, it doesn’t usually rain that much, though there's enough water to swell the Tonle Sap lake. It's an ideal time for families living in Europe and North America, thanks to the long school holidays and discounted prices at hotels and resorts.

There are also far fewer tourists exploring Angkor during the "green season" when the moats are full of water and many of the temples are coated in moss and lichen. The main drawback of shoulder season travel is that it can rain quite heavily on the coast, meaning Ko Rong and other idyllic islands near Sihanoukville can be quite wet and windy.

The low season (April–June & September–October) is the best time for discounts

When it comes to weather, these months are definitely not the best. Temperatures in April and May reach scorchio levels, and September and October are wet, wet, wet. However, this is the time when accommodation providers release their best special offers. You can save a huge amount of money if you plan on staying at five-star hotels and luxury resorts. September and October are the height of the rainy season, but this also brings emerald landscapes and epic cloud formations.

A month-by-month planner

Many of Cambodia's big festivals follow the lunar calendar and spill across more than one month on the Gregorian calendar. Here's a guide to what is happening throughout the year.

January–March is the busiest time of year

This is peak tourist season in Cambodia, and Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the South Coast are usually heaving. The internationally recognized New Year celebrations are followed by Chinese and Vietnamese New Years' festivities, so be ready for some serious festive cheer.

Chaul Chnam Chen & Tet: The Chinese New Year – known locally as Chaul Chnam Chen – coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, falling in either January or February depending on the year. As many of Phnom Penh ’s businesses are run by Chinese-Khmers, commerce grinds to a halt around this time and there are dragon dances all over the capital.

April–June brings festivals and the start of the rains

This is the beginning of the low season for visitors, as the monsoon swoops in, bringing regular rain until October. Young rice is planted and the landscape begins to come to life once more in a blaze of green after the parched months of the dry season. April is the most important month in the calendar for Khmers, marking the Cambodian New Year. However, temperatures rocket and the mercury regularly hits 40°C (104°F).

Chaul Chnam Khmer: During the three-day celebration of Chaul Chnam Khmer (Khmer New Year) in mid-April, Cambodians make offerings at wats, clean out their homes and exchange gifts. It is a memorable time to visit the Kingdom as Khmers go wild with water in the countryside, and a good-natured water fight spills across the country (throwing talcum powder is also popular).

Chat Preah Nengkal (Royal Ploughing Ceremony): Presided over by the royal family, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient agricultural festival held to mark the traditional beginning of the rice-growing season. The royal oxen predict whether or not it will be a good harvest by tucking into the sacred crop. The ritual takes place in early May and rotates around different provincial capitals.

Visakha Puja (Buddha Day): A celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinibbana (passing), Visakha Puja sees locals flock to wats (pagodas) to pay their respects. The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth moon (in May or June) and sees processions of monks carrying candles through Angkor Wat at night.

July–September sees more celebrations and crowds of backpackers

Tourism numbers see a bounce in July and August thanks to the annual school holidays in Europe and the US. Backpackers also descend on Cambodia and the Mekong region to take advantage of university and college holidays. September is traditionally the wettest month in Cambodia, with sporadic flooding along the Mekong and around Battambang . The Khmer calendar’s second-most-important festival, P’chum Ben, falls in September or October.

P’chum Ben (Festival of the Dead): This festival resembles the Christian celebration of All Souls’ Day when respects are paid to the dead through offerings made at wats. P’chum Ben lasts for several days and devout Buddhists are expected to visit seven wats during the festival. Local temples are a blaze of color, ceremonies and chanting.

October-December sees rain give way to warm, dry winds

The rains extend deep into October and this has led to some serious flooding in recent years. However, the countryside is extraordinarily green, and it's a rewarding time for boat travel between Siem Reap and Battambang. November sees the start of the dry, windy season, the best time to be in the country. The peak tourist season starts and continues through until February.

Bon Om Tuk, the much-celebrated Water Festival, takes place in October or November. Christmas and New Year are peak times for visitors at Angkor and leading beach resorts, so book a long way ahead. The international New Year on 31 December is widely (and wildly) celebrated in key cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Bon Om Tuk (Water Festival): Celebrating the victory of King Jayavarman VII over the Chams, this important festival in October or November also marks the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the reversal of the flow of the Tonlé Sap River. It’s a wonderful, chaotic time to be in Cambodia, with boat races at Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, and riverside parties in Siem Reap.

Angkor Photo Festival: In Siem Reap, resident and regional photographers descend on the temples and team up with local youths to teach them the tricks of the trade at this civic-minded festival in November or December. Photography exhibitions are staged all over town and some famous Vietnam War-era photographers are sometimes in attendance.

Angkor Wat International Half Marathon: This half marathon in December has been a fixture on the sporting calendar for two decades. Choose from a 21km (13-mile) half marathon, a 10km (6.2-mile) fun run or various bicycle races. It’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for a run than the incredible temples of Angkor.

Best time to visit Cambodia

The mighty temple Angkor Thom, near Siem Reap, on a sunny day in Cambodia

The best time to visit Cambodia is between November and May, when the country experiences low rainfall and still enjoys warm temperatures. However, the climate in Cambodia is generally hot and humid all throughout the year.

Generally, any time of the year is a good time to travel in Cambodia , with each season having its advantages. The climate in Cambodia is generally hot and humid all throughout the year. Temperatures stay in the mid to high 80s°F most of the year, dropping slightly at night. There are officially two seasons in Cambodia – wet and dry. In November–May you can expect dry conditions, while June–October will have the wettest conditions. What's more, there are benefits to traveling in both seasons, depending on what you're looking to get out of Cambodia.

The wet season in Cambodia usually runs from June through to October each year. That doesn't mean you'll avoid all rain if you travel outside of these months, but you'll definitely miss most of it. As in many Southeast Asian countries, an afternoon storm provides a welcome relief from the humid mornings, so trying to dodge any and all rain will mean you miss out on what's part of daily life in Cambodia. Just before the wet season, in April and May, Cambodia can often be incredibly warm and humid, so taking all of this into account, November–March is the best season to stay comfortable and dry.

The Angkor complex, just out of Siem Reap, is a bucket-list item on everyone's Cambodian travel must-sees. There's no one perfect time to appreciate these wonders of the ancient Khmer empire, but we want to let you in on a little secret. While many tourists decide that December to March is the best time to visit the temples because it's dry, slightly cooler and less humid than usual, the air is often quite hazy and the complex super busy during this time.

There is a reason that this is a busy time – almost guaranteed good weather – but if you're looking for crowd-free temple shots, it's probably not for you. Why not consider going at the start or end of the wet season (May–June and October–November)? While you might find yourself dodging muddy puddles and getting stuck in a mighty rain shower once in a while, there are way less crowds, and there's often sun all morning and bursts of light throughout the day that peek through the monsoon clouds. Picture this: Angkor Wat drenched in an afternoon storm, then the skies calm to reveal glistening temples in the early evening sunlight, without a person in sight. Now that's a pretty epic shot and with a bit of luck, you might get to capture it.

Cambodia's a very popular tourist destination – and we get it. It's beautiful, has a storied history and offers swathes of culture to get stuck into. All of this makes it tricky to find a time when it's crowd-free, but visiting outside of the November–March peak season is your best option. If that's just not achievable and your only opportunity to visit is in the busy period, it's best to steer clear of the Lunar New Year festival (encompassing Chinese New Year and Tet in neighboring Vietnam), which usually occurs in late January or early February. If you can work around this, you'll still be able to check out the best this country offers without too many crowds.

Best for: water sports, scuba diving and hiking

The cool (ish), dry weather of January makes it one of the best times to visit Cambodia. With temperatures ranging between 68°F -85°F, outdoor activities are super popular – think scuba diving and snorkeling in Sihanoukville and hiking in the country’s mountain regions.

While the month’s nice weather means every popular city will be packed with other travelers, Cambodia’s breathtaking landscapes will soon have you forgetting the crowds.

Best for: beach time, island hopping and Angkor Wat exploring

Similar to January, February is smack bang in the middle of the peak season so expect to share the iconic sights and city streets with other travelers. Because temperatures are at a manageable 73°F -90°F , it’s the perfect month to get out and explore. Whether you fancy laying on a beach along the Cambodian coast with a cocktail in one hand and a good read in the other or explore the ancient grounds of Angkor Wat, you’ll never run out of things to do and sights to see.

Best for: wandering around temples, floating village visits and cycling through the countryside

Since the dry season runs until April, March is still a pleasant time (albeit a little stickier) to explore Cambodia’s diverse landscapes from the chaotic streets of Phnom Penh to the luscious countryside of Battambang. Popular activities to enjoy during the month include cycling, wandering around religious temples and visiting Tonle Sap Lake’s floating villages to make the most of the peak season’s rainless weather.

Best for: boat tours, street food eating and pottery village visits

Say goodbye to the arid heat and hello to the stickiness that signals the end of the dry season in Cambodia. While you should prepare for the humidity (around 75%), potential rainfall and high temperatures of April, the monsoonal season isn’t here yet so it’s still a relatively nice month to experience the best of Cambodia.

Why not tickle your tastebuds on a street food tour in Siem Reap? Or embark on a cruise to take you from Siem Reap to Battambang? Cambodia is your oyster.

Best for: Royal plowing ceremony watching, wildlife spotting and soaking up local culture

Stifling is one way to describe the weather in Cambodia in May but don’t let that deter you from exploring this magnificent country during shoulder season (in between peak and low seasons). While the humidity’s rising and rainfall is becoming more frequent, there’s still heaps to see and do, including witnessing the annual Royal plowing ceremony that takes place every May.

Heralding the start of rice growing season, the King of Cambodia leads rituals steeped in centuries of Khmer tradition, even tilling a plot of land in the heaps of a successful and abundant season ahead. It doesn’t get more cultural than that.

Best for: museum visits, rice paddy day trips and Buddha’s birthday celebrations

One of the positives about visiting Cambodia in June is that the iconic sights and streets of the must-visit cities (we’re looking at you Siem Reap and Phnom Penh) will be relatively free of other travelers. However, one of the negatives of visiting during monsoon season is that you will get drenched at some point – that’s just a fact. Pack your thongs if you don’t want to get your shoes ruined.

But while it’ll definitely rain during your stay, the downpours only last for a short period, leaving you plenty of daytime left to explore everything Cambodia has to offer whether you’re dying to visit the luscious rice paddies or can’t wait to can’t wait to check out a museum or two.

Best for: bar hopping, Phare Cambodian Circus watching and Khmer culture

Although July is fully entrenched within Cambodia’s rainy season, the daily downpours usually occur over a short period at nighttime, meaning you should be asleep for the bulk of them (unless you’re hitting up bars along Street 104 in Phnom Penh). But, while you might be able to avoid the worst of the rain, you won’t be able to escape the humidity with levels at an eye-watering 75%. So, you should definitely keep this in mind if you’re planning any long-distance hikes in the Cardamon Mountains or strenuous bike rides.

Best for: Kampot day trips, elephant sanctuary visits and exploring the countryside

While the country may be at its rainiest, it’s also at its prettiest during August with the daily downpours ensuring Cambodia’s landscapes come to life. From the moss-covering ancient temples in Siem Reap to rice paddies bursting with a color so green you won’t want to take your eyes off them, the rainy season sure makes this country look good. Like, really good.

If you can get past the rain, you’ll have the most iconic sites largely to yourself and this also means activity prices are lower and accommodation availability is high.

Best for: Ancestors Day festivities, farm tours and dinners at Srah Srong Lake

September is one of the wettest months in Cambodia so if you’re travelling during this month, remember to pack your gumboots and waterproof jackets. While the rain will try its best to dampen your travel-loving spirits, there’s still plenty to see and do (if you don’t mind getting a little wet).

It might seem like we’re harping on and on about the rain thing but, on average, it pours 2 out of 3 days. That doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun experiencing Ancestors Day (a festival that celebrates dead ancestors) and exploring local farms on guided tours though.

Best for: food tasting at Central Market, various visitor centres and art gallery strolls

October brings the highest humidity of the year (around 84%) so while the temperatures might not be that high (80°F  on average), it’s sure going to feel like they’re about 5C higher. It can still be a great time to explore Cambodia though, as long as you’re properly prepared.

Avoid spending long periods of time outside and instead opt for activities such as strolling through art galleries and tasting every traditional dish you can see at the Central Market in Phnom Penh. That way, you’ll be out of the heat and humidity while still enjoying the very best of Cambodia.

Best for: island life, water festival watching and market stops.

You can expect the wet days to roll into November but there’s a light at the end of the monsoonal tunnel; the weather should start to turn nicer and drier as the month goes on. But crowd levels will start to increase with the peak season fast approaching. This means that iconic sights, such as Angkor Wat, will start to get busier and busier. If you want to avoid the worst of it, try visiting in the early morning or late afternoon – chances are there’ll still be plenty of people around but hey, at least you gave it your best shot.

Best for: marveling at the Royal Palace, snorkeling and new years festivities

Yes, the arid and relatively cool weather of the dry season is back, but so is the dust. Because it rarely rains during this period, expect a nice haze across the spectacular landscapes. If that doesn’t bother you, December is an excellent time to visit and even coincides with the Aussie school holiday schedule – did someone say Christmas in Cambodia?

Definitely make the most of the incredible weather and spend as much time as you can outdoors, whether that’s wandering through the Royal Palace on a guided tour in Phnom Penh or discovering Cambodia’s underwater world.

How to Get to Cambodia

There are many ways you could travel to Cambodia. Here are a few of the most convenient and cost-effective transportation methods.

Cambodia has three major operating airports – the Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville International Airports.

There aren’t any direct intercontinental flights. So you will need at least one connection if you are not coming from an Asian country.

However, the majority of eastern Asian countries have direct flights to one of the three cities.

Often, you’ll be able to choose between the three airports, since they’re all very frequent.

Of course, the one in the capital city of Phnom Penh has the most international flight connections.

The ticket prices can vary drastically depending on the date, so make sure you book in advance!

If you’re flying in from Europe, no more than one layover is usually necessary.

Your best option might be to depart from the UK, France or Germany and to fly into China, Vietnam or Thailand. You will be able to connect directly to Cambodia from these Asian hubs.

Click here to see a list of all destinations you can fly in from.

Overland Vehicle

It is possible to cross into Cambodia from the neighbouring countries of Vietnam, Thailand and Laos via automobile, motorbike or bus.

Roads are relatively well maintained between the capital and major cities of each country.

Common routes include from Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh and from Bangkok (Thailand) to Siem Reap.

Travel to Cambodia from Laos is a little more tricky, but possible.

If travelling to Cambodia by bus the options are plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

Giant Ibis, Kampot Express and Golden Bayon Express are three of the more popular bus companies in Cambodia that can accommodate travel into the country.

But note that travel times are often, if not always, slower than those posted in schedules. If you are crunched for time, you might want to consider flying into Cambodia instead of travelling by bus.

Ferry and Cruise Ship

At the moment, there’s only one ferry line available from Vietnam to Cambodia.

Mandarin Cruises has up to 7 weekly departures from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh and the tickets cost around USD$65.

The price includes the company picking you up at your hotel and dropping you off at your chosen address.

You can make a reservation on their website or buy the ticket in their office.

Make sure you have the necessary visas and travel documents!

Cruise Ship

You could also take a cruise ship from Vietnam to Cambodia.

But this is considered a luxury cruise and will be more expensive and touristy than taking the ferry.

However, this will allow you significantly more comfort and luxury, if you’re willing to spend the money.

The greatest advantage of these cruises is that you will have an English-speaking guide.

He or she will introduce you to the Mekong river, as well as the countries that it’s connecting.

The cruises last for a minimum of three days and they usually include all three meals.

Even though the prices can be very high, you can usually find early-bird discounts or cheaper deals.

Visa Requirements for Cambodia

Those who choose to travel to Cambodia must obtain a visa unless they are coming from a visa-exempt country.

Those countries are Laos, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand.

Residents of these countries can stay in Cambodia for up to 30 days.

Other tourists can get a visa upon arrival or they can get an e-visa via the iVisa website .

Keep in mind that e-visas are accepted at only two of the three airports (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap).

You can find the list of all entry points, including land borders, by clicking on this link .

The tourist visa costs USD$30 and if you’re using the e-visa service, you’ll have to pay an additional USD$7 fee.

The business visa costs USD$35 and can be extended multiple times for longer periods.

On the contrary, the tourist visa can only be extended once.

Residents of certain countries must get their visa in advance, in Cambodian embassies in their homelands.

Those countries are: Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Yemen.

It is important that your passport is valid for at least six months.

Also, the Cambodian visa will take up one page of your passport, so make sure you have enough space left.

Click here to see the visa application form.

If you don’t want the responsibility of handling the papers, you can always get the help of an agency!

You can also apply for visas to visit other countries, such as Vietnam , from the capital city of Phnom Penh.

Best Time to Travel to Cambodia

There truly is no bad time to travel to Cambodia, depending on your travel preferences and whether you are willing to endure rain during your visit.

Unlike many parts of the world, Cambodia doesn’t really have four seasons.

Instead Cambodia’s seasons are divided into the rainy season and the dry season.

The dry season lasts between October and April. Therefore, the most popular time for travelling to Cambodia is usually during these times.

Even though the weather is warm all year round it is best to avoid travelling to Cambodia during the rainy season.

The humidity can be smothering and the heavy rains will greatly restrict your ability to see and do things across the country.

On the other hand, some people like to travel when there aren’t many tourists around.

The advantages of that are lower prices and the fact that it’s highly unlikely any place will be too crowded.

The rain season has a couple more perks, such as seeing the country at its greenest and lushest.

However, even if you don’t mind the rain, there are certain months when the weather conditions are especially difficult.

The peak of wet season is in September and October, when heavy rains can cause transportation issues.

Also, keep in mind that May and June are usually the hottest months, when temperatures often reach 40°C.

  • Even though most places accept US Dollars, do not assume that everywhere will. Make sure that you have both currencies on you, or at least only Cambodian Riels.

Best places to visit in August

September is the wettest month in Cambodia, with heavy showers occurring almost daily. While these showers are typically short-lived, it's important to be prepared for the rain if you plan to visit during this time. Despite the rain, it is still possible to explore and enjoy Cambodia's attractions. However, it's worth noting that the heavy rainfall may make some rural areas difficult to access by road. If you prefer more favorable conditions, considering visiting a month before or after September would be a more appealing option.

The atmosphere during Pchum Ben is filled with reverence and spiritual devotion, providing a unique insight into Cambodian culture and traditions.

As Cambodia's peak season begins anew, the temples attract large crowds, and temperatures hover around a pleasant 77°F. To secure your desired accommodations, it is advisable to book well in advance.

Best Time to Visit Cambodia in 2023 (Weather & Tips)

BEST TIME TO VISIT CAMBODIA

If you’re looking to plan a holiday in Cambodia, you probably know what to expect – the typical tropical climate, dictated by humidity, rains and heat. You won’t be wrong, either.

But there’s a little bit more you need to know if you want to schedule a trip to Cambodia to make it ideal to your preferences. I’ve put together this travel guide if you’re asking yourself when is the best time to visit Cambodia?

Weather in Cambodia

cambodia average weather

(the graph is taken from weather-guide.com )

Cambodia is witness to the usual tropical climate. It sees a constant temperature throughout the year of around 30 degree Celsius.

The rains are determined by the typical monsoon winds, while the rest of the year sees dry sunshine and clear skies. There are broadly two climatic divisions in the year – the wet season from June to October and the dry season from November to March.

December and January is the best time of the year to visit Cambodia, but June is a good option too if you’re not put off by the occasional shower.

April is the worst month weather-wise in the Cambodian year – you’ll want to stay clear of the excruciatingly high temperatures and suffocating humidity!

The Wet Season

cambodia raining day

For you to plan your travel itinerary , you need to know of the two broad climatic divisions. The south-west monsoon winds carrying rainfall blow across the country from around May to October, resulting in a rainy season which lasts from July to September.

While this may put many travellers off, the rains aren’t harsh on tourists- it typically rains every day, so you will definitely face some rain while sight-seeing, but only for a few hours leaving the rest of the day open for travel.

However, navigation will prove to be a problem, since the rains cause flooding, and make the mud-roads hard to travel on. If you’re looking to stay put in one place, though, the monsoons bring the bounty of the rains, with lush flora and green jungle offering their best.

The monsoon season also sees fewer travellers, thus driving down prices in hotels and for tours. The temperature average at about 26-28 degree Celsius.

The Dry Months

cambodia dry season

In Cambodia, the best time to visit is the dry season. Typically, there is less rainfall from October and November, and the dry season lasts till April. This is accompanied by significantly cooler weather from November to January.

The temperature averages at around 24 and 25 degree Celsius. This is the ideal time to visit Cambodia if you’re not comfortable with the trademark warm weather of the region.

The temperatures stay low in the 20 degree Celsius range, the air is dry and there is plenty of sunshine. These months also see minimal rains.

The dry season is also great for beach-lovers. This is by far the best time to visit Cambodia beaches. However, the great weather brings with it throngs of crowds.

It starts to warm up again, and March and April see extremely warm temperatures. It gets humid and hits 40 degree Celsius.

Siem Reap Weather

average temperature in siem reap

In Siem Reap, Cambodia’s weather doesn’t differ from the rest of the country too much. The entire country sees similar climatic conditions and with very little fluctuation across the year.

Like all other places in the country, it is best to visit Siem Reap in the dry season, which is when it sees cool weather and little rain.

The period between December and February is ideal, with day-time temperatures staying in the 20s range and with cool evenings. This is also the peak season, however.

If you’re keen on missing the crowds, you could consider visiting Siem Reap in March, when it is still very warm but sees little rain before the wet season sets in.

Check our recommendations for places to stay in Siem Reap.

Phnom Penh Weather

average temperature in phnom penh cambodia

(the graph is taken from weather-atlas.com)

The weather in Cambodia’s capital city is not all too different from Siem Reap or the rest of the country. The hot and wet season lasts from February to May. The temperature rises to the 30s, but the city also sees smaller crowds and better deals in these off-season months.

On the other hand, the months between November and January have the ideal weather of the dry season – the temperature averages at around 24 degrees and sees minimal rain.

However, even though this is the peak season for the rest of the country, the capital city doesn’t see similar crowds and so, visiting Phnom Penh in the months with good weather is still a good option.

The temperature in Phnom Penh is at 34-35 degrees in March and April. The second half of the year is relatively cooler but stays in the 30s.

It rains the most in September and October but takes a sharp turn downward in November with the dry period lasting till April. This pattern is also broadly true for Siem Reap as well.

Best Month to Visit Cambodia

cambodia to visit

Overall, January is the best month to visit Cambodia, with cool and dry weather. However, it is also the busiest month of the year, especially given the good weather. An alternative would be the month of June.

The monsoon season sets in, but it is only the very beginning of the wet season, which means that there are enough dry weather and sunshine to allow for pleasant sightseeing, and without all the crowds.

The takeaway from this is that any time is still a good time for general sightseeing in Cambodia. In the end, take in the highs and lows of the tropical weather as a part of the exotic Southeast Asian experience!

When's the best time to visit Cambodia

The best time to visit Cambodia is from November to April. Temperatures in this period typically range from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). This season offers dry weather and clear skies, ideal for exploring the southern coast and other attractions.

The weather is hot all year round, but peaks in March and May when temperatures can reach around 32°C and above. In December and January , the weather is dry, but the temperatures are slightly cooler - it’s usually expected to be approximately 25°C - 30°C (77F - 86F) at this time of year.

The cooler part of the season between November and February is the peak time for tourism. Mild enough to explore temples in comfort but warm enough to sunbathe by the coast.

May to October brings around 75% of the countries annual rainfall. The rainy season is humid, and temperatures will still be high.

Are you looking for the best month to visit Cambodia? Here’s our month by month guide. It will give you a good idea of the climate and how this might affect your travel plans.

January: Best for temples, markets, and museums visits

January , typically the coldest month in Cambodia, still boasts warm temperatures of 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). The slight dip in temperature makes it more comfortable to explore cities like Siem Reap , Phnom Penh and Battambang . The reduced humidity facilitates easier visits to temples, markets, and museums. Since this is among the best times to visit Cambodia, expect more crowded conditions. Early booking for accommodation is advised due to the high demand.

February: Best for jungle adventure

February's slightly lower temperatures still make for comfortable travel conditions across the country. Whether you're looking to explore ancient temples, vibrant markets, or lush jungles, this time provides an excellent backdrop for your adventures. Accommodation prices remain high, and popular sites can be crowded, so advance booking is recommended.

March: Best for Angkor Wat exploration

The temperatures increase between March and May. In March, the heat begins to intensify across Cambodia, with temperatures climbing over 30°C (86°F) in some areas. This month marks the beginning of the warmer season, transitioning away from the cooler, more comfortable weather of the preceding months. Despite the rising temperatures, March still offers a relatively moderate climate compared to the peak heat of April and May. If you want to visit the Temples of Angkor , explore the colourful markets or trek in the jungle, it can be the best time to do so.

April: Best for festive atmosphere

In April , temperatures in Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat can be as high as mid 30 to 40°C. The rainy season is starting, but there is a moderate rainfall compared to the extremely wet months of September and October. Kep and Kampot are popular at this time of year.

The Khmer New Year spans across three days in mid-April. In the capital Phnom Penh , most major attractions, museums and restaurants close during the celebration as Cambodians return to provinces to celebrate with family. Siem Reap usually has events taking place too. In the countryside, families celebrate as they reunite. It’s one of the busiest celebrations of the year, so you’ll need to book accommodation early.

May: Best for lazy days on the beach

You can be sure of sunshine and heat in the southern islands, which is perfect for lazy days on the beach and water activities. The temperature is cooler on the coast. Angkor Wat in May can be unbearably hot for some visitors. Avoid visiting unless you can handle humidity. March can be a little cooler and can be a good compromise if you are looking for the best time to visit Cambodia.

June: Best for partying all night long

June to August is the rainy season, and although you can expect a downpour, temperatures are approximately 30°C or more, and very humid. Sihanoukville is also the entry point to the islands of Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Ta Kiev. Tranquil Koh Ta Tiev remains peaceful undiscovered territory although there are some more lively beaches like Ochheuteal Beach and Serendipity beach where you can party from sunset to sundown.

July: Best for a unique experience in a green tropical paradise

Cambodia can be less popular during the summer (July and August), which is officially when the rainy season is in full swing. The rainy season can still be the best time of year to visit Cambodia. July is also known as the “green season” as the countryside is flourishing. During rainy season Cambodia is in full bloom, and it’s a great chance to see the landscape as a lush green oasis.

August: Best for a holiday with fewer crowds

The amount of rainfall per day starts to increase towards August . It can rain every day in the wet season in Cambodia, but generally, there won’t be a downpour that lasts all day, although that can happen.

September: Best for exploring the country from a different angle

During September , the country transforms into a waterlogged expanse of tropical green under the daily deluge of rainfall. It’s a fascinating time to see the country, although dirt roads can turn into mud and flooding is commonplace.

October: Best for exploring the high water levels of Tonle Sap Lake

Although the rainfall can present practical challenges, it can be a beautiful time of year to see the stunning scenery of Cambodia. October can be a great time to visit the floating markets of the Tonle Sap, and Angkor Wat is quieter than in December and January.

November: Best for observing local traditions and celebrations

In November , the temperatures are cooler, and there is less rain. It marks the end of monsoon season, and this becomes a popular time to visit for many tourists. It is also the month the Cambodian Water Festival is celebrated. This festival celebrates the reversal of the Tonle Sap River into the Mekong River. In early November, the Bonn Om Toeuk Water festival has traditionally been celebrated in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. You can watch the colourful boat races take place on the Mekong. Most towns and villages seek to participate by building boats that can hold up to 100 people

December: Best for a holiday in the midst of a vibrant atmosphere

December in Cambodia is a preferred month for many tourists due to cooler temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). It's an excellent time to visit iconic sites like the Temples of Angkor, colourful markets, and embark on jungle treks. This month also offers the best conditions for visiting lakes, rivers, and the Tonle Sap floating villages, still full from the rainy season. Remember, it's peak travel season, so booking accommodation early is crucial, especially for a Christmas stay. Prepare for crowds, particularly at major tourist spots like Angkor Wat.

The southwesterly monsoon from May to October brings the rainy season, humidity and strong winds. The northeasterly monsoon brings the sunshine. From November to April, Cambodia is still hot with average temperatures rising to around 32°C (89°F).

It doesn’t rain all day during the rainy season, so it’s possible to visit some of the highlights of Cambodia while avoiding the crowds. Summer can be the best time for families to travel to Cambodia if they need to coincide with school holiday dates. Everything is quieter wherever you choose to visit.

Flooding can be a problem on the roads in Cambodia during the summer, and although you can travel anywhere, it may take a lot longer. Mud can cause road closures, especially in the countryside.

In September and October, the rain can be more substantial and more consistent. It’s naturally much quieter, making this the best time to visit Cambodia for some. Travelling by road can be impacted during the rainy season as flooding is a possibility.

During the rainy season in Cambodia, as it doesn’t rain all day, it can be a good time for sightseeing. It is one of the quietest times to visit major landmarks like Angkor Wat and the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. There will be fewer crowds and the countryside is appealingly green and lush. Some travel plans may be affected if travelling between the cities Phnom Penh , Battambang and Siem Reap , or if travelling to other villages as flooding can occur.

sunrise-angkor-wat-cambodia-shutterstock_379375132

Sunrise at Angkor Wat ©Shutterstock

Millions of visitors head to Angkor Wat every year, and it can often get crowded, particularly between December and February. It is cooler at this time of year, but nothing can prepare you for the crowds. In the dry season, even if you get up very early before sunrise, you will experience crowds. The best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon if you want to avoid the sweltering hot weather at midday.

In March to May, it can get hotter, and the weather is usually dry and bright. For some, walking around Angkor Wat in the heat could be unbearable. Angkor Wat covers a large area, and you need to be prepared to travel around to see it fully.

During the rainy season in June to October, the whole of Angkor Wat will be quieter, so it is the right time to avoid the crowds. It’s most likely to rain in the afternoon, so it’s better to visit in the morning. Rainfall won’t impact the entire day, but mud roads or flooding may affect your journey to Angkor Wat. It may just take longer to reach your destination. The rainy season also brings intense humidity, so you need to be comfortable with heat if you choose to go at this time of year.

The Best Time to Visit Cambodia: Wet Vs. Dry Seasons

best time to visit cambodia 2023

BY JARED DILLINGHAM

Cambodia, located in Southeast Asia, has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The best time to visit Cambodia largely depends on your preferences and what you want to do during your trip.

I’ll go into the weather for each season down below, and do a month-by-month breakdown of the pros and cons.

In general, these are the guidelines:

  • ☀️ Best weather : November – February
  • 💰 Best prices : June – August
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Smaller crowds : May – September

There’s a LOT of information down below, so click on the Table of Contents below to skip to the conditions in the month(s) you’re thinking of visiting Cambodia.

The Best Season to Visit Cambodia

Here’s a seasonal breakdown of the weather in Cambodia:

  • November to February (Dry Season):
  • Winter Weather:  This is considered the best time to visit Cambodia as the weather is cool and dry. Daytime temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F).
  • Winter Highlights:  Ideal for exploring temples like Angkor Wat, and enjoying the beaches in Sihanoukville and nearby islands. The water levels at Tonle Sap Lake are low, making it a good time for boat tours.

2. March to May (Hot Season):

  • Spring Weather:  Cambodia starts to heat up during these months, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F) in some areas. It’s still relatively dry in the spring.
  • Spring Highlights:  Despite the heat, spring is still a popular time to visit. It’s best for early morning temple visits and indoor activities. Consider Cambodia’s coastal areas for a bit of relief from the heat.

3. June to August (Wet Season – Monsoon):

  • Summer Weather:  These months bring heavy rainfall and high humidity to Cambodia. Expect daily afternoon downpours, especially in July and August.
  • Summer Highlights:  While it’s the rainy season, you’ll find lower prices at hotels. The landscape is lush and green, and the temples are far less crowded.

4. September to October (Transition Period):

  • Fall Weather:  Cambodia starts transitioning from the wet season to the dry season during these months. Rainfall decreases gradually.
  • Fall Highlights:  It can be a good time to visit Cambodia, if you don’t mind occasional rain showers. The Cambodian countryside is at its most vibrant, and the crowds are still small.

best-time-to-visit-cambodia

Cambodia, located in Southeast Asia, is renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and an array of breathtaking attractions, from the magnificent temples to the stunning beaches . However, it is crucial to determine the best time to visit Cambodia before embarking on your journey to this enchanting destination. This comprehensive guide will present an in-depth exploration of the various seasons and weather patterns in Cambodia, enabling you to plan your trip meticulously and make the most of your experience.

Cambodia Climate Overview

Cambodia experiences a tropical monsoon climate characterized by two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The country is situated in the tropical zone, which means it has a warm and humid climate throughout the year. However, the weather can vary significantly depending on the time of year and the region you are visiting.

Dry Season (November to April)

The dry season in Cambodia starts in November and lasts until April. This period is considered the best time for most travelers to visit Cambodia. The weather during the dry season is generally sunny and dry, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). The humidity is relatively low, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Highlights of the Dry Season:

Temple Exploration:  The dry season offers ideal conditions for exploring the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat and other historical sites. The clear skies and cooler temperatures make it easier to navigate the vast temple complex and appreciate its architectural wonders.

Beach Getaways:  Cambodia is home to stunning coastal areas, such as Sihanoukville and Koh Rong. During the dry season, these beach destinations enjoy sunny weather and calm seas, making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.

Festivals and Celebrations:  The dry season is also the time when Cambodia celebrates various festivals, such as the Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) and the Khmer New Year. These vibrant celebrations showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage and provide a unique insight into Cambodian traditions.

Rainy Season (May to October)

The rainy season in Cambodia spans from May to October, with the peak rainfall occurring between June and September. While some travelers may be deterred by the prospect of rain, the rainy season has its own charm and advantages for those willing to embrace it.

Highlights of the Rainy Season:

Lush Greenery:  The rainy season transforms Cambodia into a lush, green paradise. The countryside and national parks come alive with vibrant foliage and blooming flowers, creating a picturesque backdrop for nature lovers and photographers.

Fewer Crowds:  As the rainy season is considered the off-peak travel period, you can expect fewer tourists and lower prices for accommodation and attractions. This provides an excellent opportunity to explore Cambodia’s popular destinations without the usual crowds.

Authentic Cultural Experiences:  The rainy season offers a chance to witness traditional rural life in Cambodia. Farmers are busy with their rice cultivation, and you can observe the traditional farming techniques and participate in local activities.

Regional Variations in Weather

It is important to note that Cambodia’s weather can vary across different regions of the country. The coastal areas experience a slightly different climate compared to the inland regions.

best-time-to-visit-cambodia-2

Coastal areas and inland regions do not share the same weather

Coastal Areas

Cambodia’s coastal areas, including Sihanoukville and Koh Rong, have a tropical maritime climate. The temperatures are generally higher, ranging from 27°C to 35°C (81°F to 95°F), and the humidity is more pronounced. The coastal regions also receive more rainfall throughout the year, with the rainy season being more intense.

Inland Regions

The inland regions where the famous temples of Angkor Wat are located have a tropical savanna climate. The temperatures are similar to the coastal areas, but the humidity is slightly lower. The rainfall is more concentrated during the rainy season, with occasional showers during the dry season.

The dry season from November to April is generally considered the most popular time to visit Cambodia. The weather is quite pleasant, with cooler temperatures. It’s also the least rainy period, making it ideal for activities like hiking in remote areas or island hopping.

best-time-to-visit-cambodia-3

Dry season is also the most crowded time in Cambodia

However, the dry season is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect larger crowds at major attractions and higher hotel prices. Let’s explore this further.

From December To February

December through February are popular months to visit Cambodia due to cooler weather. Even though January is typically the coldest month, the average high temperature remains between 25°C to 30°C. This makes it an ideal time to explore the lush forests or shop at the bustling markets.

  • Places To Visit During This Time

Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Battambang are great options because the weather is less humid, making it easier to tour temples, markets, and museums. However, it is also the prime travel season, so it is advisable to book your hotel accommodations in advance as prices are typically higher. The Christmas period is particularly busy, and popular tourist spots can become crowded.

If you want to see lakes, rivers, or the Tonle Sap floating communities, December is an excellent choice as they are still populated after the wet season. It is important to be prepared for the crowds especially in primary tourist destinations during this time of year.

  • Events You Can Enjoy:  Liberation Day (7th January)

From March To May

Springtime in Cambodia falls between March and May. During this season, you can bask in the sunshine and enjoy the stunning beaches of Cambodia. If you’re looking for a tropical paradise, then this is the ideal time of year to visit.

Travelers usually flock to the southern islands, Kep and Kampot, during this season. Kampot’s peacefulness and relaxed ambiance add to its charm. You can explore the surrounding towns of Kep and Rabbit Island, kayak and paddleboard along the Kampot River, or take a boat cruise during this time of day because of the beautiful sky.

You can reach Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem, and Koh Ta Kyiv from Sihanoukville. Although there are busier beaches like Ochheuteal Beach and Serendipity Beach where you can party from sunset to dusk, tranquil Koh Ta Kyiv remains an unexplored area that provides a serene experience.

  • Events You Can Enjoy

The Khmer New Year, which lasts for three days, usually falls in mid-April. During this period, many Cambodians travel back to their home provinces to celebrate with their families. As a result, most of the city’s top attractions, museums, and restaurants close during the holiday in Phnom Penh. There are frequent events in Siem Reap as well. Families reconnect in the country and celebrate together. Due to the high demand for accommodations, it’s advisable to book in advance since it’s one of the busiest holidays of the year.

Tips for Visiting Cambodia During the Peak Season

If you’re planning to visit Cambodia during the peak season, which typically runs from November to February, here are some tips to make the most of your trip.

Book Accommodation in Advance

As the peak season attracts a large number of tourists, it’s advisable to book your accommodation well in advance. This ensures that you have a wider range of options and can secure the best deals. Consider staying in popular areas like Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, or Sihanoukville, depending on your preferences.

Plan Your Itinerary

With an influx of visitors, popular attractions can get crowded during the peak season. Plan your itinerary in advance to avoid long queues and make the most of your time. Research the opening hours of attractions, plan to visit popular sites early in the morning, and consider visiting lesser-known or off-the-beaten-path destinations to escape the crowds.

Decide the destinations that you want to visit

Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun

Cambodia’s peak season coincides with the dry season, which means you can expect hot and sunny weather. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially when exploring outdoor attractions. Apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and dress in lightweight, breathable clothing to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

Be Mindful of Cultural Etiquette

Cambodia is a country with a rich cultural heritage, and it’s important to respect local customs and traditions. When visiting temples, dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering. Be mindful of your behavior and avoid touching or climbing on sacred structures. Learning a few basic Khmer phrases, such as greetings and thank you, can also go a long way in showing respect to the locals.

Try Local Cuisine and Street Food

Cambodia is known for its delicious cuisine, so make sure to indulge in the local flavors. From the famous fish amok to fresh seafood and tropical fruits, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Don’t miss the opportunity to try street food, which offers a unique culinary experience. However, be cautious and choose vendors with good hygiene practices to avoid any stomach issues.

Stay Safe and Be Aware of Scams

While Cambodia is generally a safe country to visit, it’s always important to stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying valuable items openly, keep your belongings secure, and be cautious of common scams targeting tourists. Use reputable transportation services and consider hiring a local guide for added safety and to enhance your experience.

By following these tips, you can have a memorable and enjoyable experience while exploring the wonders of Cambodia during the peak season.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the peak season from November to February is often considered the best time to visit Cambodia. Cambodia, also known as “the pearl of Southeast Asia” is a pocket-sized country that has a little bit of everything and a lot to offer.

So, when is the best time to visit if you want to avoid the rains? When is the best time to visit the famous temple of Angkor Wat? and when is the best time to avoid crowds? When?… That is the question.

Table of Contents

Cambodia’s weather, the dry season, the dry & cool season, cambodia’s high season, the rainy season, cambodia’s low season, the monsoon season, rainy season at angkor wat, for festivals.

In general, Cambodia’s weather is pleasant all year round. Temperatures stay in the low- to mid- 80s for most of the year and there are two principal seasons – the rainy season and the dry season.

There are advantages and disadvantages to traveling during both seasons, it just depends on what you’re hoping to get out of your trip to Cambodia

If you prefer to avoid the rain, then plan your trip between November and May. During the dry season, there is little to no rain.

Also, If you plan on visiting the more remote parts of Cambodia like Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri, you will have to go during the dry season as they are more accessible.

Within the dry season, is the cool season and high season. If you prefer cooler temperatures, you should travel from November to February. During the winter months the temperature drops a little – keyword being “little”. It still averages between 70-86℉ (21-30℃).

More specifically, in December and January, the weather is pretty much perfect! This is by far the best time to visit Cambodia weather-wise but just be aware that the idyllic weather brings gaggles of tourists along with it.

December and January are considered Cambodia’s high season mostly because they align with many other countries’ winter breaks. High seasons equals massive crowds at the major tourist spots.

While the droves of tourists can get overwhelming, the weather is pleasant and enjoyable as it’s smack dab in the middle of dry season (December and January) .

The rainy and wet months from May to October account for 75% of Cambodia’s yearly rainfall. The best time to go to Cambodia during the rainy season is between June and early September as the rains are not quite as heavy.

While rain can really put a damper on holidays in other parts of the world, in Cambodia it’s just part of life. The locals don’t let it ruin their day, and neither should you!

On rainy days you can still enjoy markets, galleries, museums, and more in Cambodia’s major cities. While the countryside is a beautiful vibrant green.

Remember that you will be traveling in South East Asia so try to embrace it and dance in the rain(forest)! Pack a rain poncho and some rain boots and you will be fine!

The low season coincides with rainy months from June to September. The worst part is the intense rains and the best part about it is the cheaper prices.

You will find more affordable flights and hotels during Cambodia’s low season. You can book luxury hotels at mid-range prices and take advantage of discounts and deals at Restaurants and shops.

Monsoons are seasonal changes in the direction of the wind that roll in around late May and early June and go well into October. Cambodia’s coastal regions take the brunt of the monsoons, but they cause rains that can only be described as torrential downpours in many regions.

If there is a monsoon during your trip it’s best to seek shelter in a cafe or restaurant and wait out the storm. You will get soaked and I’m afraid a poncho just won’t cut it in monsoon rains.

Traveling to Angkor Wat is an incredible experience no matter what, but if you visit during the rainy season you are guaranteed the best views! Angkor Wat’s greyish brown tones contrasting with the bright green make for poscard-worthy photos like the one below.

While you might find yourself playing hopscotch to avoid muddy puddles, I can assure you it’s well worth it. What’s more, when it rains, the moats surrounding the temple fill up with water!

Cambodia has lots of fun festivals throughout the year. Two of the best ones are Bon Om Touk and the Water Festival.

Bon Om Touk is a traditional festival that is usually held towards the end of October and the start of November each year. It represents the launch of Cambodia’s peak fishing season.

It takes place in Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, and all along the Mekong River. The city comes alive and its landmarks are decorated with lights. Cambodians from all over the country come to compete in a race of dragon boats down the river. If possible, I highly recommend going to see the spectacle.

In April it’s time for The Water Festival. It lasts for about three days, and the locals get together for celebrations on the river banks and thank the God of Water for the rains.

Considering Cambodians rely heavily on agriculture for their economy, the farmers are especially thankful for the natural fertilizer and water. It’s a really unique experience.

  • Dry season: November to May
  • Cool season: November to February
  • Hot season: March to June
  • Rainy monsoon season: May to October.

Cambodia is a unique country with beaches, rivers, rainforests, and mountains. The best time to visit Cambodia depends on what kind of weather you prefer, but it genuinely makes for a great holiday at any time of the year.

‘Visit Cambodia Year 2023’ tourism campaign kicks off

  • មួយឆ្នាំមុន

The government issued a circular on a tourism campaign called “Visit Cambodia Year 2023” with a slogan “Every Day is A Wonder” to promote tourism and Cambodia while the Kingdom hosts its first historic SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games in May.

The goals of the campaign are to attract at least four million international tourists to visit Cambodia and to reach at least 15 million local visitors at tourist destinations in the country this year. It also aims to increase competitive advantage in the tourism sector post-Covid-19.

The message released on February 23 by Prime Minister Hun Sen said that “Visit Cambodia Year 2023” goes hand in hand with another campaign called “Cambodia Kingdom of Wonder—Feel the Warmth”. That campaign stands on four pillars: Heritage, culture, eco-tourism at beaches and “Khmerness”.

The circular instructed the tourism ministry to work with the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) to promote the “Visit Cambodia Year 2023” using the games mascots which are the two rabbits named Borey (male) and Romdoul (female), as well as the upcoming Angkor Sangkran in April. The promotion will be done through airlines, at international border checkpoints and entry points as well as at other important places.

The information ministry is also instructed to promote the campaigns through the media and the tourism ministry must work with relevant local authorities and tourism agencies to organise at least one international and local tourism event every month.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is instructed to work with the tourism ministry to promote “Visit Cambodia Year 2023”, including considering issuing a special visa for this purpose.

“Cambodia Angkor Air must use the logo for “Visit Cambodia Year 2023” in their advertisements and encourage the use of this logo on the airplanes of national airlines as well as on the airplanes of other airlines flying to Cambodia,” the circular said.

All relevant ministries and state institutions must also join hands to promote this “Visit Cambodia Year 2023” by using the slogans for the campaign stated in the circular.

Southeast Asia is a blend of fascinating traditions and cultures, with some of the most incredible temples, palaces and natural sites on the planet.

This region is home to famed attractions, from Angkor Wat to Ha Long Bay, as well as a selection of sprawling cities – including Bangkok , Kuala Lumpur and Singapore – and miles of pristine coastlines around Indonesia and the Philippines.

And though places such as Bangkok and Singapore have seen high numbers of British tourists for decades, other destinations are starting to attract more people, from lesser-known Laos to the neighbouring backpacker favourite of Cambodia .

Whether you’re looking to throw yourself into exploring a city or hop around a handful of serene tropical islands, your options are pentiful in this corner of the world.

Below are Independent Travel’s  picks for the region’s best countries to visit on holiday; read on to start planning your next long-haul getaway.

Thailand has long been a tourist favourite for Brits, whether for travelling youngsters or business people. Its capital, Bangkok (known locally as Krung Thep) was the most visited city in the world for several years in a row before Covid and is just a short journey away from the ancient city of Ayutthaya .

With dozens of famous white-sand beaches around the country (such as Railay and Ko Phi Phi ), as well as several areas of natural beauty (one of the most unique being Khao Sok National Park) and dozens of temples and palaces, Thailand offers anyone visiting the country a diverse mix of sightseeing, city experiences and relaxation – not to mention the nation’s delicious cuisine.

Best time to visit Thailand

With a rainy season falling between July and October, the best time to visit is between November and April, when temperatures are higher (with average highs in the early 30s). May is usually a quieter time to visit, but the sunshine may be interrupted by short rain periods.

Vietnam’s various areas of natural beauty are among the most notable in the region. Ha Long Bay is the country’s most famous natural area, while the beaches of Phu Quoc and the Cham Islands offer equal beauty in different settings. Other natural attractions include the caves of Phong Nha and Hang Son Doong, the Marble Mountains and the sand dunes at Mui Ne.

As for cities, Ho Chi Minh City , Hanoi and Da Nang are the best destinations for those who want to experience Vietnamese ‘hustle and bustle’ (Da Nang also has beach areas), while Hoi An is sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of Vietnam’ due to its canals and the well-preserved Ancient Town comprised of wooden Chinese shophouses and French colonial buildings.

Best time to visit Vietnam

April and September fall just before and after the high season in Vietnam and also offer less humidity and lower temperatures than at the peak of summer. With weather that can vary quite drastically across the country in different months, these should give the best weather across the board too.

Singapore is a popular destination for British expats, with an estimated 50,000 living there. It’s a country that is almost unlike any other; its urban planning strategy has created a metropolis and enabled almost six million people to live in an area roughly half the size of London.

Despite its diminutive size, the country offers numerous attractions , from its Botanic Gardens (a Unesco world heritage site) and historical and art museums to the Gardens by the Bay , a nature park spanning 101 hectares, and a Universal Studios theme park. It also hosts a Formula 1 race, which takes place in September on the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Best time to visit Singapore

Singapore has significant rainfall all year, although the country’s dry season falls between February and April, when humidity levels are also at their lowest. Specifically, February and September offer the lowest rainfall and humidity, with average highs of around 31C. September also falls in low season.

By far the largest country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia lies at the southern end of the region and consists of roughly 17,500 islands, including Sumatra and Bali. With so many islands, it’s no surprise that the archipelago contains some of the region’s most attractive areas. Bali in particular is a tourism hotspot, while many of the islands offer tropical rainforests, rugged terrain and even volcanoes (the country sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to both eruptions and earthquakes).

Jakarta is the capital and largest city in the country and is located – along with the popular tourist town of Yogyakarta– on the island of Java. Idyllic locations include Lombok and the Raja Ampat islands; Bromo Tengger Semeru and Komodo National Parks offer unreal nature and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Best time to visit Indonesia

The dry season usually runs from April to October, which is also when the country welcomes the most tourists. If you want to avoid crowds, May and June offer average highs of roughly 31C and over eight hours of sunshine per day.

Malaysia’s culture is an eclectic mix of European, Chinese, Indian and Malay influences, while the country itself is famous for its rainforest, beaches and the capital city of Kuala Lumpur , with the iconic Petronas Twin Towers being one of the country’s most iconic symbols.

Away from the capital, many tourists decide to visit the Malaysian part of Borneo – in the north of the island – where rainforest treks, wildlife viewing and relaxing on the beach are all possible. The Perhentian Islands and Sipadan are two other popular destinations, while nature-lovers flock to the Batu Caves, Mount Kinabalu and the Cameron Highlands.

Best time to visit Malaysia

You can expect fewer crowds from March to June; these months have average temperatures of around 28C, while June is the driest month of the year (though bear in mind you can still expect showers every month).

Philippines

Another archipelago, the Philippines consists of more than 7,000 islands. Under Spanish rule for over 300 years, it is one of the only predominantly Roman Catholic countries in the whole continent and has been widely influenced by Western culture and traditions. For those keen to see its cities, Manila is the capital while Quezon is the largest.

Tropical white-sand beaches are plentiful on the nation’s thousands of isles, while the volcanoes of Mayon and Tail offer dramatic scenery overlooking the water. Other sites include Sigma Lagoon, Pagsanjan Falls and the Batad rice terraces.

Best time to visit the Philippines

The Philippines dry season falls right in the middle of the low season for tourism. The driest months are between January and March, where there is little rainfall and humidity falls to much more tolerable levels. Expect temperatures of up to 24C – and lows of 15C – every day.

Cambodia welcomes visitors eager to learn about its complicated history and experience its mix of Asian and French culture. A largely rural country, only three of its cities are home to over 100,000 people despite the country’s 16 million-strong population. Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city, while Siem Reap is another metropolitan centre that also acts as the gate to Angkor Wat, an ancient temple which today is the largest religious structure in the world.

The country’s islands, such as Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem, contain pristine white beaches, sandy coves and coral reefs , and are popular spots for partying too. The Cardamom mountain range stretches over 4.4 million hectares of rainforest through the Southeast and into eastern Thailand, and is home to a vast range of wildlife, including sun bears, elephants and Siamese crocodiles. Tonle Sap lake is the largest in Southeast Asia, with its waters and floodplain home to over three million people and hundreds of different animal species.

Best time to visit Cambodia

Temperatures are at their lowest in the dry season between November and February, but you’ll still see average highs of 30C.

Laos is one of the continent’s smaller countries, and its shared borders – with Vietnam to the east, Thailand to the west and Cambodia to the south – give you an indication of the geography that you’ll find here. Whether you want to go through dense jungle on a cruise along the winding Mekong River, trek through the jagged karst around Vang Vieng or simply relax in the laid-back capital of Vientiane, there’s something to appeal.

Laos’ most important landmark is the Pha That Luang, a golden Buddhist stupa in Vientiane, while the capital’s other highlights include temples like Wat Si Saket and the old quarter. If you have time, visit the peaceful Song River and the town of Vang Vieng, before exploring the Unesco city of Luang Prabang and surrounding nature, including waterfalls, plunge pools and the banks of the Mekong.

Best time to visit Laos

The weather is Laos is best between October and April, when conditions are dry and not too warm. For river cruises, November through to January is best for high water levels, while August is both the wettest and most humid month.

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Vietnam and Cambodia 2024

Vietnam and Cambodia are a popular combo for first Southeast Asia trips, known for Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, the Mekong Delta, and Angkor Wat, as well as their large cities and several other attractions.

Bordering each other, they share similar climate patterns: a dry season (November to April) and rainy season (May to October). Weather-wise, the dry season from November to April is undoubtedly the best time with most sunny days and cool/warm weather.

Best Weather Times for Vietnam and Cambodia

Best times for a family trip to vietnam and cambodia, the worst and cheapest times to visit vietnam and cambodia.

  • Monthly Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

For most of Vietnam and Cambodia, November to April is the best time with mostly dry and clear days. The dry season is divided into the cool season (November to February) and the hot season (March to April).

If you're sensitive to heat, you're suggested to take your trip during November–February for cool/mild temperatures.

While temperatures rise to 30+°C (86+°F) in the hot season, beach vacations and Mekong River and Halong Bay cruises are more pleasant. If you travel with us , we'll keep you refreshed and beating the heat with cold drinks from our cool box and private, air-conditioned transport for your daily private touring.

Best Times Outside the Dry Season

If your available time is outside November-to-April, you could still discover some cities of Vietnam and Cambodia with comfortable or non-rain-affected experiences.

Home to Angkor Wat, Cambodia never loses its charm even in the height of the rainy season (June to October). If possible, visit in May or late October for less rainfall.

Owing to Vietnam's elongated shape, its best times differ regionally:

  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc Island, and the Mekong Delta) : Although November to April is its best time, Mekong River cruises are still good options in the rainy season.
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, and Danang) : With its unusual short, sharp, September–December wet season, you could enjoy mostly dry weather from January through to August , which makes it ideal for summer-holiday family trips.
  • Northern Vietnam (Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and Hanoi) : You would have warm/mild weather from October to April. October is a good month to discover Hanoi and Sapa, with only-moderate rainfall and warm temperatures.

When planning a family trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, December and January are the best time for mild/warm, dry weather and atmospheric Christmas and New Year celebrations . But with those benefits come the highest crowds and costs. So, ideally, prepare for it at least 3 months in advance to secure the best deals. For a summer getaway, June is a better time to go . Lower rainfall and smaller crowds are rewards compared with July and August. More ideas on how to plan a multi-generational family trip to Southeast Asia  or how to plan a family trip to Southeast Asia >>>

Weather-wise, the rainy season (May to October) is seen as the worst time to travel around Vietnam and Cambodia. However, you could enjoy 30–50% savings during this cheapest time.

If crowds particularly bother you, then the peak season (November to April) may actually be the worst time for you, especially around the Christmas and New Year holidays. A well-organized private tour could help to avoid many crowded situations though.

An insider's tip: Travelling just before/after the high season (in May or late October) is advisable as a compromise for lower costs, smaller crowds, and lighter rainfall.

The Rainy Season in Vietnam and Cambodia

The rainy season arrives between May and October in most of Vietnam and Cambodia. The heaviest rainfall hits most areas between July and August, except for central Vietnam (with September–November peak rainfall).

During the rainy season, you might encounter typhoons, which appear more frequently around September and October in central and northern Vietnam. Your Halong Bay cruise might be canceled if a typhoon crosses the bay.

Be aware that the rainy season doesn't mean floods, storms, and consistent rainfall all the time. Instead, most rainfall comes as short afternoon downpours and rarely lasts the whole day. Thus, dry daytrips are still possible if you're flexible and well-prepared, and you would be rewarded with the lowest costs and crowding during this cheapest time to travel around Vietnam and Cambodia.

Find Your Best Month to Visit Vietnam and Cambodia...

January weather in vietnam and cambodia.

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 12°C to 20°C (54°F to 68°F), dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F), low rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 26°C to 32°C (79°F to 90°F), dry

January is one of the best months to discover all the iconic attractions in Vietnam and Cambodia, with low rainfall and warm/cool temperatures.

Travelling in January, you're suggested to prepare at least 6 months in advance, particularly for New Year holidays. For family trips, early booking is better to avoid skyrocketing prices and to ensure booking family rooms.

Vietnam's New Year (Tet festival) occurs in late January or early February (Jan. 25 in 2024), limiting sightseeing, shopping, and dining access. Big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh remain visit-worthy, but the Mekong Delta closes for Tet's initial four days. Contact us for expert tips inside a customized private tour.

February Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 13°C to 21°C (55°F to 70°F), dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), dry
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 26°C to 33°C (79°F to 91°F), very dry

Throughout Vietnam and Cambodia, the best weather continues in February with drier and warmer weather than in January. Your trip shouldn't be affected by the weather, no matter whether you visit the iconic highlights or somewhere off-the-beaten-path.

Similar to January, you should expect larger crowds and costs in February. Early booking, ideally 6 months in advance, is the key to securing your best deals.

March Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 16°C to 23°C (61°F to 73°F), dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 21°C to 27°C (70°F to 81°F), dry
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 27°C to 34°C (81°F to 93°F), dry

The weather remains dry in March, and temperatures increase. If you're looking for cooler weather, northern and central Vietnam are ideal places to go. Meanwhile, the hot-season weather makes southern Vietnam and Cambodia less crowded.

As March is still the high season, high costs prevail, and long queues are the daily routine . So, a private tour is recommended to help navigate the quieter routes, avoiding crowds, and to make your trip time-smart for a comfortable experience.

April Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 22°C to 27°C (72°F to 81°F), moderate rainfall
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 23°C to 29°C (73°F to 84°F), low rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 28°C to 34°C (82°F to 93°F), low rainfall

Except for in northern Vietnam, where there is a bit more rain than in other areas of Vietnam and Cambodia, April temperatures usually get as hot as 30°C (86°F) or so. But crowds tend to be smaller.

In April, northern Vietnam is a comfortably warm paradise for outdoor adventures, such as hiking in Sapa, biking in Ninh Binh, and kayaking/cruising in Halong Bay.

For a romantic milestone trip , our well-selected small-boat Mekong cruise allows more private time for you, as it has only 12 rooms in total. For life-long memories, you deserve a special sunset balloon ride or helicopter tour over Angkor Wat .

May Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 23°C to 31°C (73°F to 88°F), moderate rainfall
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F), low rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 27°C to 34°C (81°F to 93°F), high rainfall

May is a transitional month from dry to wet season in most of Vietnam and Cambodia. Throughout both countries, the daily high temperature averages above 31°C (88°F). Outdoor activities are better scheduled in the early morning and late afternoon for cooler weather.

For drier experiences, you should expect less rainfall in early May than in late May. Central Vietnam is a dry option as well, where the scenery along the DMZ (Hue south via Hai Van Pass to Phan Thiet) never disappoints.

June Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Average temperature range in Cambodia and Vietnam: 26°C to 34°C (79°F to 93°F);
  • high rainfall in all but low-rainfall central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang)

In June, most of Vietnam and Cambodia begin its hot and humid rainy season. You might encounter short intense downpours. However, central Vietnam is still in the "rain shadow".

Due to the heat and rainfall, you'd probably have the attractions mostly to yourselves, which is a particularly nice change at the iconic ones, and you'd enjoy big discounts. For families with school children, June is a better time to take a summer holiday if you can, before the local summer holiday arrives in wetter July and August.

July Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Average temperature range in Cambodia and Vietnam: 26°C to 35°C (79°F to 95°F);
  • high rainfall in all but low-rainfall central Vietnam

In July, rainfall becomes more frequent and heavier. Keeping your itinerary flexible is necessary to make the best of the weather. As we're experienced in dealing with such conditions, we always prepare a plan B for you when travelling with us .

Your trip would be less affected if you spent time in central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang), and the Mekong River cruise is a good option all year round. But book your trip at least 3 months in advance, since local (and other nations') summer holidays start in July.

August Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • high rainfall in all but central Vietnam, where it's only moderate

The heaviest rain arrives in August in northern and southern Vietnam, and Cambodia. Central Vietnam is the best option then, with various cultural experiences in Hoi An and abundant beach activities in Danang.

In Cambodia, you'll have green and lush scenery at the height of the wet season, and you'll never need to fight for the best photo spots at Angkor Wat.

Road travel can sometimes be impacted by flooding in August. As locals, our private drivers and guides always get the latest news and deal with it professionally, helping you have the best tour possible in such circumstances. Start planning your trip with our professional consultant >>>

September Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Average temperature in Cambodia and Vietnam: 24°C to 31°C (75°F to 88°F); high rainfall throughout

In September, rainfall and temperature continue high in northern and southern Vietnam, while central Vietnam's rainy season begins. Cambodia suffers its rainiest month. Travelling in September definitely requires more flexibility.

Typhoons or heavy rains are likely to affect coastal trips to Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and Nha Trang this month . If you are a beach lover, you're suggested to visit drier Koh Samui in Thailand , or Bali in Indonesia instead.

October Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern and central Vietnam: 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F); low rainfall in the north; extremely high rainfall in the central region
  • Cambodia and southern Vietnam: 25°C to 31°C (77°F to 88°F); high rainfall to low late in the month

October is the tail end of the rainy season in most of Vietnam and Cambodia. The temperature cools towards comfortable levels too. So, October is a good month to visit Vietnam and Cambodia, especially towards November.

The only exception is central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang), which is suffers its extreme peak of the rainy season (September to November). You are likely to have persistent stormy days there, so be flexible and take advantage of indoor activities, like cooking classes, lantern-making classes, and making ao dai (Vietnamese national costumes) .

November Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 17°C to 24°C (63°F to 75°F); low rainfall
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), very high rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F); moderate rainfall

The best months to visit Vietnam and Cambodia begin again in November. The rainy season in central Vietnam continues torrentially, though.

You'll have more sunny days and cooler weather, which is great news, no matter whether you want a romantic sunset tour over Angkor Wat or to enjoy your family time on the beaches.

With the inevitable increase in crowds coming, you could enjoy a quieter time in early November.

December Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 14°C to 21°C (57°F to 70°F); dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F); high rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 23°C to 29°C (73°F to 84°F); low rainfall

As one of the best months, most of Vietnam and Cambodia is warm/mild in December. If you're looking to escape the cold in your hometown, Vietnam and Cambodia are good options in December. Even central Vietnam's rains finally slacken off in late December, as the whole region enters the dry season.

Being the peak season, making reservations 6 months in advance is the way to get better prices and ensure availability , especially around Christmas.
