Complimentary overseas travel insurance

If you have a Bankwest Platinum or World Mastercard ® , you may get some complimentary benefits – like overseas travel insurance. See what's covered, where to make a claim and how to upgrade.

Are you eligible?

You, your spouse and dependent children may get complimentary cover – as long as you’re travelling overseas together and have an open and activated eligible credit card.

The best bit? There's no minimum spend – the cover applies automatically if you're eligible.

You’ll have the basic benefits, with the option to upgrade for extra protection. There are some limitations and exclusions – like if you’re 80 or over, or have pre-existing medical conditions. For more information, refer to the Credit Card Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDF) .

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 cover under the Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit is now included for travellers whose journey commenced on or after 24 August 2022. If you have purchased any upgraded cover before 24 August, regardless of the date travel commences, COVID-19 cover is not included under Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit. There is no COVID-19 cover for cruise travel or cancellation claims related to COVID-19. Terms and conditions apply.

There is no cover under any other benefit for claims related to COVID-19 for all destinations. For more information please refer to the  Credit Card Insurance PDS (PDF) .

What are you covered for?

Existing medical conditions and age limits.

Some existing medical conditions (like diabetes or asthma) and pregnancies are automatically included in your complimentary insurance - as long as you meet the specified criteria for the conditions. Check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to work out if you're covered.

If your condition isn't automatically included, or you don’t meet the criteria for cover, you can complete a health assessment online through Cover-More. If you're approved, you can then purchase additional cover.

If you’re 80 or over

Your complimentary overseas travel insurance doesn't include medical or health-related cover. If you like, you can call Cover-More directly to enquire about other travel insurance options.

Looking for extra protection?

You can buy comprehensive and extended cover options through the Cover-More upgrade portal. Access it through the Bankwest App, otherwise you can call Cover-More on 1300 468 340 .

Buy cover for cancellation (up to $15,000 if it’s just you or up to $20,000 if it’s your family too – this is already included if you have a World Mastercard), rearrangement and a range of other extras - like rental vehicle insurance excess cover and travel delay expenses. Limits apply.

Extended cover

If you have a Gold or Platinum Mastercard, you can extend your cover by up to two months. If you have a World Mastercard, you can extend it by up to six months.

Before you upgrade, make sure you check our Financial Services Guide (PDF) .

Frequently asked questions

1. which cards are eligible for overseas travel insurance.

Bankwest Gold, Platinum and World Mastercard credit cards are automatically eligible.

2. Who’s covered under my insurance?

If your spouse and dependent children are travelling overseas with you, they’re protected too.

You no longer need to meet the minimum spend ($500 per person on prepaid travel expenses) in order to make them eligible.

3. Do I need a return ticket booked before I leave Australia?

No, you can book it while you’re overseas. Just keep in mind that the insurance is for travelling, not living overseas.

If you make a claim that includes a ticket to get you home, and you didn’t book one before you left, the cost of the fare will be deducted from the claim.

4. Where can I find my policy number?

You can find your complimentary policy number, upgraded policy numbers and claim info by calling or emailing Cover-More. Otherwise, you can do it from the Cover-More self-service portal through the Bankwest App.

5. Are my children eligible for overseas travel insurance?

Eligible dependent children are only covered if they travel with you for the entire trip.

Here’s Cover-More’s definition of an eligible dependent child:

  • All unmarried children, up to and including 18 years of age, who the cardholder has sole custody of and who live with the cardholder
  • All unmarried children, up to and including 18 years of age, of whom the cardholder has shared custody
  • All unmarried children, from 19 years of age up to and including 21 years of age, who are full-time students attending an accredited institution of higher learning in Australia and who the cardholder has/had sole or shared custody, and who are dependent upon the cardholder for their maintenance and financial support
  • All unmarried persons who are physically or mentally incapable of self-support who the cardholder has custody of and who live with the cardholder.

However, accompanied child/children never means an infant born on the journey.

For more info, call Cover-More on 1300 468 340 .

Creditcard.com.au review

Editor review, who suits the bankwest zero platinum mastercard, overall review.

I don’t know what else Bankwest could have packed into its Zero Platinum Mastercard (considering you’ll pay no annual fee to have it). It may not have rewards points, but it addresses two of people’s big challenges: debt, and saving money.

The 28-month interest-free balance transfer offer is one of the longest out there, making it a good card if your goal is debt freedom. Its savings on foreign fees and travel extras are very handy money-saving features that can really add up.

Editor’s Review: the Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard

Let’s dive right in by looking at the big features of this card and how to get the most out of them.

Balance transfer offer. This is a limited-time offer that’s one of the best in the market in terms of length. You can transfer debt from an existing credit card to your Bankwest Zero Platinum card and pay 0% p.a. for 28 months while you pay off the debt.

Let me detail some of the fine print. The balance transfer offer is only available if it’s your first time being approved for the Bankwest Zero Platinum card. You’ll be charged 3% of the amount you’re transferring, which is added to your balance. The 28 months starts from the date of card approval, not the day the transfer takes place, and you can’t transfer from other Bankwest cards. And lastly, you can transfer up to 95% of your credit limit (which is a very high amount compared to some other cards) with a $500 minimum.

If you have a balance left after the 28 months, you’ll be charged a balance transfer interest rate of 14.99% rather than the cash advance rate. That’s a significantly lower rate than other cards charge on leftover debt. Of course, the goal is to pay off your debt in full before the interest-free period ends.

No foreign fees. You won’t be charged foreign transaction fees on purchases when you’re travelling overseas or buying something from an international merchant online. That also includes withdrawing from an overseas ATM, but remember you might be charged a 3rd-party fee for using the machine.

Complimentary travel insurance. You, your spouse and dependent children who are accompanying you on the trip can use the international travel insurance. Insurance is available for trips up to 31 days, but you can apply for longer coverage if needed.

Under the policy, you may be covered for overseas emergency medical expenses, rental vehicle insurance, travel delay expenses and transit accident insurance. Within Australia, you may be able to use the Interstate Flight Inconvenience insurance if your flight is delayed by 4 hours or more, or your belongings are damaged.

Everyday extras on the Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard

The Bankwest Zero Platinum has a few other perks up its sleeve. They may not seem overly exciting at first, but it is pretty exciting when you get to use them.

Interest-free period: If you don’t have an active balance transfer, you’ll get 55 days interest-free on new purchases as long as you pay the closing balance each month.

Easy Instalments repayment plans: Bankwest lets you spread the cost of up to 5 purchases between $100 and $10,000 over 4 monthly instalments. You won’t pay interest on the instalment amounts, which can help you pay off your purchase faster. Easy Instalments can be set up and managed via the Bankwest app.

You’ll also get other protections with your card alongside your travel insurances. These include:

Purchase security: 90 days of cover from the date of purchase if your purchase is lost, stolen or damaged, as long as the purchase was made on your card.

Extended warranty: An extension of the manufacturer’s written Australian warranty on personal goods that were charged to your card.

Price guarantee: a refund of the difference in price of an item purchased where you find it cheaper elsewhere within 21 days and within 25km of the original purchase location.

What’s not so great

If you have an active balance transfer, you won’t be eligible for the 55 days interest-free. That means any other purchases you make on your card will have interest applied immediately.

This isn’t an unusual practice for credit cards, but it can send you backwards if your goal is to pay off debt with your balance transfer. Keeping your eye on paying down debt first means you won’t have to tackle extra interest from everyday purchases.

Some fees might apply, such as a $25 late fee if you miss your monthly repayment, and a 3% or $4 (whichever is greater) on cash advances. The long-standing advice is to avoid withdrawing cash from your credit card altogether.

Who might suit the Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard?

While having no annual fee could make this card a good one for first-timers, its perks also mean it lends itself well to people with existing credit card debt. It also suits travellers or big spenders who want to save on international transaction fees.

I have had this card for a year and I have no complaints. This card is the perfect travel companion! While you do not get any rewards, all of the other features make up for it (i.e. no annual fees, waived international fees etc.). Service from the Bankwest staff was also impeccable - I had only a week before my holiday and they kept me updated throughout the entire process, and got the card to me super fast!

Creditcard.com.au Visitor

Great card , no annual fee, no foreign exchange fees and true exchange rate plus free travel insurance . This card suits me better than anything on the market. I don't even bother looking at interest rates as I don't use any card as a loan. Never had an account to with bankwest until I got this card a couple years ago. I now have an online savings account too.

A really good value card with lots of good offer and no fees at all.

Carol-Ann Donnelly

How often do you find a platinum card with no annual fee?? You get a personal concierge and a whole heap of other perks like different insurances and no foreign exchange fee when you buy stuff overseas. Great if you travel a lot or shop a lot online.

After opening a bank account with Bankwest I decided to look into their credit cards as well as they seemed to be offering good deals. This one has some good perks but I got it mainly for the purchase offer. Think it will be good in long term as well though.

What is a platinum credit card?

Pros and cons of a platinum credit card, who is eligible for a platinum credit card, how can i choose the best platinum credit card, finder awards winner and finalists for 2024, frequently asked questions.

A platinum credit card is a step up from standard and gold cards, and typically offers you more premium perks including rewards, complimentary insurance, concierge services and higher credit limits.

Platinum cards also tend to have higher minimum income requirements and annual fees compared to less premium cards. This makes them suited to people who can use the rewards or perks to justify the annual fee, and who typically pay their balance off each month to avoid interest charges.

  • More rewards. Platinum credit cards typically give you more points per $1 spent, higher points caps and bigger bonus points offers than standard or gold cards.
  • Higher credit limits. Minimum credit limits on platinum cards typically start around $3,000 and maximum limits can be around $75,000. But not all cards list minimum and maximum limits.
  • Complimentary insurance. A lot of platinum credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance for overseas or interstate trips, as well as different types of insurance for purchases.
  • Other perks. Airport lounge access, flight or travel credit and concierge services are some of the other benefits you can get with a platinum credit card.
  • Higher annual fees. Platinum credit card annual fees typically range from around $49 to $1,750, although some cards do offer reduced and $0 annual fees in the first year or ongoing.
  • Interest rates. Platinum cards that offer rewards and other premium perks typically have higher interest rates than no frills cards. Platinum cards with lower rates typically offer fewer perks or rewards.
  • Stricter eligibility requirements. You'll need a good to excellent credit score to get approved for a platinum credit card. Income requirements are also typically higher than for gold or standard cards.

Platinum cards used to be very exclusive but with so many credit cards on the market now, the eligibility criteria varies. Key details to look at include:

  • Minimum income. Platinum card income requirements in Australia start from around $35,000 and can go up to $100,000 for more exclusive cards. Even if a card doesn't list a minimum income requirement, it will be considered as part of the application.
  • Employment. You typically need to have regular income and ongoing employment to get a platinum card.
  • Credit history. Platinum cards typically require a higher credit score than more basic credit cards. Ideally, you shouldn't have any late payments, defaults or other black marks on your credit report.
  • Other requirements. To get any credit card, you'll need to be at least 18 years of age. Each credit card also has details of Australian residency requirements, which can affect your eligibility if you're a temporary resident or hold a visa.

With so many different credit cards available, there is not a single "best" platinum card on the market. But asking these 4 questions can help you find one you want.

Do you travel frequently?

If you want to use your credit card for travel bookings and rewards, a platinum card that offers frequent flyer points and perks like airline lounge passes, travel credits and complimentary international travel insurance gives you a way to get more value from the account.

Tip: When you're comparing cards, weigh the annual fee against the value you'll get from points and perks to help you find a platinum card that's worth it for you.

Do you want to buy big-ticket items with your credit card?

Finder research shows 21% of Australians got their most recent credit card to make big purchases. When that's the case, a platinum card could offer you a higher credit limit than a regular card, as well as complimentary purchase protection insurance, extended warranty cover, best price guarantees or even smartphone cover to give you extra peace of mind.

Do you have existing credit card debts?

If you're already paying interest on a credit card balance, a platinum credit card with a balance transfer offer gives you a way to transfer it and get a low or 0% interest rate for a promotional period.

Just keep in mind that you'll usually get more value if you focus on repaying the balance before using any other platinum perks. But if you want to switch to a platinum card anyway, one with a balance transfer could give you a way to save as you pay off what you owe – then make the most of the ongoing perks.

Are you a business owner?

A platinum business credit card gives you a way to manage cash flow with higher credit limit options, earn more rewards points and get access to complimentary business insurance policies

These cards also offer expenses-tracking tools and additional cards for employees, just like other business and corporate credit cards .

Keep in mind: If you want the perks of a platinum credit card, make sure you also consider the costs of the card and any specific conditions you need to meet to enjoy these benefits. It's also important to compare a range of platinum credit cards before you apply so that you can find the one that works for you.

Best Travel Credit Card

The Bankwest Zero Platinum won the 2024 Finder Award for Travel Credit Cards, with no foreign transaction fees, no annual fee, comprehensive overseas travel insurance and a competitive interest rate. It has been the top rated card every year Finder has included this category in our awards program.

Best Business Charge Card

The American Express Platinum Business Card won the 2024 Finder Award for Business Charge Cards, scoring highly for its bonus point offers and earn rate. This high-end card also offers international and domestic travel insurance and unlimited airport lounge passes.

Highly commended Frequent Flyer Credit Card - Qantas

The Qantas Premier Platinum was highly commended in our award for Qantas Frequent Flyer Credit Cards. It scored highly for bonus Qantas Points offers and points per $1 spent. Other perks include Qantas Club lounge invitations, travel insurance and a Qantas companion flight offer.

Finalist Frequent Flyer Credit Card - Velocity

The American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card has the highest Velocity Points earn rate in Australia (1.25 points per $1 spent). It scored highly for its bonus point offers, complimentary annual domestic flight and up to 4 airport lounge passes per year.

Are there platinum credit cards with no annual fee?

There are only a few platinum credit cards in Australia that have an ongoing $0 annual fee, including the Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard and Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard . You can also get platinum credit cards that offer a waived annual fee in the first year.

Which is higher: a black card or a platinum card?

Black cards are typically seen as more premium accounts than platinum cards but there are some exceptions. For example, the American Express Platinum Card offers a huge range of benefits that are on par with many black cards – including a yearly $450 Platinum Travel Credit, airport lounge access, premium hotel perks, dining credit and insurance covers.

If you're looking for a particular perk, you can compare gold, platinum and black cards side-by-side to find one that offers the features you want.

Is a platinum credit card right for me?

If you regularly spend with a credit card and pay it off as you go (or by the due date on each statement), you could get extra value from platinum features. And if you travel regularly and will make use of extras such as complimentary insurance, frequent flyer points and airport lounge access, these perks could help offset the cost of the card.

But if you don't usually pay off your card's balance each month or rarely use it, paying a higher annual fee and interest charges for platinum features may not be worth it. Instead, you could compare cards with low interest rates or no annual fee to find one that's affordable for you.

The release of the new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card in March may seem like a good option with competitive rewards rates, but how does it stack up to some of the best travel credit cards on the market today? And does it deserve a place in your wallet?

In this article, we’ll examine the cards’ welcome offers, rewards, benefits and travel partners to assess their overall value. Let’s see how the Autograph Journey measures up to these four competitors:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Citi Premier® Card
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express

Welcome offers

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey SM Card has a competitive welcome offer of 60,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 in the first three months. According to Bankrate’s valuations , Wells Fargo Rewards are worth about 1.0 cents per point, giving the welcome offer a value of $600. After completing the spending requirement, you could have anywhere from 64,000 to 80,000 points, depending on which categories you utilize to meet the spending requirement. That’s a return of 16 percent on the low end to 20 percent on the high end, though you’ll likely fall somewhere in the middle.

How the Autograph Journey stacks up

The welcome offer on the Autograph Journey matches up with the regular offers from the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Citi Premier exactly. All three give the same bonus, for an identical spending requirement and timeframe, with the same annual fee. However, both Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points are worth more, at about 2.0 cents and 1.6 cents per point, respectively, when transferred to a high-value travel partner. This gives the edge to both, with Chase being the most valuable at $1,200 and Citi at $960.

Looking around, the Capital One Venture X offers more miles for the same amount of spending requirement and timeframe. With this card, you’ll get 75,000 miles, but also pay a higher $395 annual fee. Capital One miles are also more valuable at about 1.7 cents per point, making its welcome offer worth $1,275.

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers the most points of any of these offers — at 80,000 Membership Rewards points — but it also requires the highest spending at $8,000, although you’ll get twice as long to meet that amount (six months). It also has the highest annual fee of these cards at $695. Since Membership Rewards points are valued at about 2.0 cents cents per point, this offer has a value of $1,600.

Our decision: Not as good as the competition

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey offers the lowest overall value of any of these welcome offers, due to the lower value of the Wells Fargo Rewards it earns.

When deciding between these cards, consider:

  • Whether you can meet the spending requirement
  • What you want the points for
  • The return on your spending

Based on these criteria, the best overall value comes from the Venture X since your return on spending will likely be a higher percentage — even though the Amex Platinum offers the most points and the highest value.

Rewards and benefits

Outside of its welcome bonus, the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey comes with excellent earning rates in numerous categories focusing on travel. Specifically, you’ll earn 5X points at hotels, 4X points on airlines and 3X points on other travel and restaurants. All other purchases earn 1X points.

You’ll also get a $50 annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase — utilizing this credit offsets more than half of the $95 annual fee. Additional benefits include:

  • Trip protection coverage
  • Auto rental collision coverage
  • Emergency/roadside assistance
  • Cell phone protection
  • My Wells Fargo deals
  • Visa Signature benefits

As it is, the card earns solidly enough to function as a standalone card, offering excellent protection and benefits. However, let’s compare this more closely with its competitors to assess its actual value.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred®

Both of these cards come with a $95 fee. For travel purchases, the Autograph Journey gets 5X on hotels, 4X on airfare, and 3X on other travel, while the Sapphire Preferred only earns 2X on travel (but can earn 5X if you go through the Chase Travel portal or use Lyft). Chase points also get a 25 percent boost when booking travel through Chase Travel. While both cards earn 3X on dining, the Sapphire Preferred also earns 3X for streaming and online grocery purchases.

Whereas the Autograph Journey has a $50 air credit, the Sapphire Preferred has a $50 hotel credit instead. You’ll also get a points boost on your account anniversary equal to 10 percent of your spending from the prior year. Chase has more extensive transfer partners, including four of Wells Fargo’s airline partners. There are also more Chase cards available that can combine points with the Sapphire Preferred via the Chase trifecta , giving it an even further advantage.

You might choose the Autograph Journey if your travel spending aligns better with Wells Fargo’s bonus categories. However, for most people, the Sapphire Preferred will be the more flexible option.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Citi Premier®

These cards also have the same annual fee — and once again, the Autograph Journey earns slightly better on hotel and air purchases. While the Citi Premier has limited-time earnings of 10X on hotel and car rentals through the Citi Travel portal through June 30, 2024, it earns 3X in the following categories:

  • Restaurants
  • Supermarkets
  • Gas stations

By covering a more comprehensive range of everyday expenses, Citi Premier gets the edge for earning rewards.

The Citi Premier also offers an annual $100 hotel credit on a stay of $500 or more when booked through the Citi Travel portal — more than double the Autograph Journey’s air credit. While Citi overlaps on a few of Wells Fargo’s transfer partners, it also offers a more extensive list than Wells Fargo. Citi also has the Citi trifecta that allows you to combine points from multiple cards.

As a result, the Citi Premier generally offers more value overall, unless your spending is primarily travel-focused.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Capital One Venture X

The Capital One Venture X comes with a higher annual fee than the Autograph Journey, coming in at $395 instead of $95. Still, this higher fee can be easily offset with the card’s $300 annual travel credit on the Capital One travel portal and the 10,000 bonus miles you’ll earn on your account anniversary (worth $100).

The main difference between the two is that the Venture X earns a flat rate of 2X miles on all purchases. If you book through the portal, you’ll get 5X on airfare and 10X on hotels and car rentals. If you book travel directly, the Autograph Journey is likely a better choice, but the Venture X still has the potential for higher returns. Non-bonus spending will do better on the Venture X, for example, but you’ll earn more with dining purchases on the Autograph Journey.

Overall, Capital One miles have a higher value and more transfer partners while overlapping most of Wells Fargo’s partners. You’ll also get more benefits and perks like extensive airport lounge access . Even with the higher annual fee, the Venture X is a clear favorite almost across the board.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. The Platinum Card® from American Express

These two cards approach travel from opposite positions. While the Autograph Journey has a manageable annual fee and earns solid reward rates, the Amex Platinum has one of the highest annual fees out there and mediocre earning rates outside of its 5X rate on airfare and hotels purchased through Amex Travel. Beyond travel purchases, the Autograph Journey is superior for spending.

Where the Amex Platinum shines above the rest is its laundry list of perks and benefits . For as high as the $695 annual fee is, you can still come out ahead if you take advantage of all the credits offered, including:

  • $200 annual airline incidental credit with your selected airline
  • $200 Uber credit ($15 each month, $35 in December)
  • $100 Saks Fifth Avenue credit ($50 semi-annually)
  • $200 annual credit with Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts
  • $240 entertainment credit ($20 monthly)
  • $189 annual CLEAR membership credit
  • $300 Equinox/SoulCycle annual credit
  • Walmart+ reimbursement ($12.95 monthly cost)
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit once every four years
  • *Enrollment required for select benefits

Maximizing these credits more than compensates for the card’s annual fee, covering everything from travel and shopping to lifestyle purchases. In addition, you’ll get extensive airport lounge access, excellent travel protections, a superior list of transfer partners and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and several car rental companies. Here, the overall value offered by the Amex Platinum’s perks and credits far exceed any other card — if you can fully utilize them.

Our decision: Perks fall short but rewards measure up

These comparisons point to a glaring weakness of the Autograph Journey — its perks and benefits. Each main competitor card offers more value in credits, benefits and point value. Even the higher annual fee cards make up for that difference with superior returns in the benefits category. If you’re looking at this card specifically to handle your travel needs, you may want to consider one of the other cards, all of which give better returns.

However, the card holds up well with its reward-earning rates, particularly in the travel and dining categories. The rates for hotels and airfare purchases are strong and don’t require you to shop through a travel portal. This distinction can be helpful, as many hotel chains and airlines will deny your elite benefits when you book through a third party like this. With plenty of bonus categories, the Autograph Journey should be able to cover much of your everyday spending.

Airline and hotel transfer partners

Each card has its own set of airline and hotel transfer partners — multiple cards can cover some programs, while others may be unique to a single card. We’ve compiled a list of all the partners to help you decide which card is best for you. All transfer ratios are 1:1 unless otherwise noted.

Our decision: The Autograph Journey doesn’t measure up

As you can see, the Autograph Journey has the smallest number of transfer partners — each of which is covered by at least two competitors. Further, considering that the Autograph Journey comes with the lowest overall point value, the card’s competitors are likely to be a better choice if you’re looking for a specific transfer partner, given their wider selection and better value.

You could certainly use the Autograph Journey’s welcome offer to supplement the point balance in one of its partners, but in most cases, you shouldn’t use it as the primary method to accrue those points unless you’re spending in its top categories.

The bottom line

While introducing a travel card with transfer partners is a big milestone for Wells Fargo, the Autograph Journey unfortunately doesn’t quite rise to the level of its competition. While the reward rates are decent, the lower value of Wells Fargo points keeps it a step behind the competition. Given that, this card is best suited for people who may already have a solid portfolio of credit cards and are looking for a new program to supplement their points balances. But if you’re looking for your first premium travel card, you’ll likely get more value from one of the other cards in this space.
