Suivez le Tour de France masculin et féminin sur les antennes de franceinfo, France Bleu, France Inter et France Culture

Les antennes de Radio France, en particulier franceinfo et France Bleu , radios officielles du Tour de France , vous proposent de suivre en direct du 1er au 23 juillet les étapes masculines et du 23 au 30 juillet les étapes féminines de la Grande Boucle.

Samedi 1er juillet, les 176 coureurs des 22 équipes participant à la 110e édition masculine prendront le départ depuis Bilbao, en Espagne pour rejoindre Paris en 21 étapes sur un parcours de 3 404 km avec un record de 30 cols, côtes ou arrivées en altitude classés en deuxième, première ou hors catégorie (23 en 2022).

La deuxième édition féminine mettra cap au sud le dimanche 23 juillet depuis Clermont-Ferrand. Les 22 équipes s'affronteront sur 956 km de course et traverserons 3 régions : Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine et Occitanie soit 11 départements. Après huit étapes (4 étapes de plaine, 2 étapes accidentées, 1 étape de montagne avec une arrivée au Tourmalet) ce Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift s'achèvera par un contre la montre individuel à Pau le 30 juillet.

Les journalistes Jean-Pierre Blimo et Marie Ameline, journalistes sportifs de France Bleu, Stéphane Barbereau, Sophie Constanzer, Fanny Lechevestrier, Nicolas Perronet, Fabrice Rigobert et François Sauvestre, journalistes à la direction des sports de Radio France et Jean-François Bernard, consultant, vous feront vivre cette course mythique sur les antennes de Radio France.

Dès mercredi 28 juin à 13h, France Bleu reçoit Christian Prudhomme , directeur du Tour et Christian Laborde , écrivain, poète, pamphlétaire et chroniqueur dans l'émission spéciale Ma France .

Et à partir du vendredi 30 juin France Bleu vous emmène en terre espagnole avant le grand départ du Tour masculin du samedi 1er juillet.

Chaque jour, étape de repos comprise, France Bleu vous proposera des émissions spéciales en direct depuis le « village départ » avec des invités, des consultants et des reporters sur le parcours, au plus près des spectateurs (en langue basque le 1er et 2 juillet avec France Bleu Pays basque et France Bleu Béarn Bigorre).

Et tout au long de la journée rendez-vous sur France Bleu pour un point sur les enjeux, le contexte, les favoris, l’ambiance, le décor des étapes et l'arrivée en direct.

Une belle occasion également pour vous faire (re)découvrir les produits du terroir et les spécialités culinaires régionales que traversera le peloton.

Tour de France Secrets From the Most Important Voice on Race Radio

Seb Piquet, narrator of the biggest bike race in the world, reveals the trick to doing time gaps, whether he ever takes a nap in the car, and what it was like to watch Froome run up Ventoux

Broadcasting from the race director’s car, behind the peloton or the break, Piquet’s voice narrates the stage in real time for team cars, race officials, and media. His commentary guides the convoy, enriches information provided to TV announcers, and delivers hard facts to the commissaires adjudicating the race.

We talked to Piquet about what it’s like to be the most important voice at the biggest bike race in the world.

As the speaker for Radio Tour, what functions do you serve in the race?

The number one thing is to give out information to the team cars. Then I give out information to press, and to commentators. I always make sure I have an eye on the guys in front of me in the pack, calling the team car if anyone has a puncture, needs bottles, has mechanical issues, or if they crash. You have to react instantly and call the cars forward as quickly as possible.

In all the chaos of the race, how do you stay informed of everything that’s happening?

I can’t see the front of the race because I’m just behind the pack, so I have three motorbikes up there. Basically, these three guys on the bikes are my eyes on the front, and they tell me what goes on—which riders are up there, and what the time gaps are at specific moments.

How do they do the time gaps?

They start their stopwatch at a specific place where the breakaway is and and they wait for the pack to show up. That’s when you only have one bike. When you have several bikes, the guy on the lead bike will find a mark and radio back to the guy behind him who is with the front of the pack; for example, he’ll say, “Ok right now I’m at kilometer 33.” Then he’ll tell the other guy who’s at the front of the pack to launch his stopwatch. When the second moto hits the mark, that’s the time.

So there are just a load of guys with stopwatches?

It’s most efficient, because you never know with data and satellites. They’ve tried doing it with TV [footage], but it’s not accurate enough. What works is a good old stopwatch and a guy on a motorbike. It has to be spot-on.

If a commentator says something wrong about time gaps, can he put a Tweet out saying, “Seb Piquet gave me the wrong information?”

Yeah, sure. It happened once—it was a sprint stage on the Tour de France and there was a crash with under a kilometer to go. Someone in the car with me said, “Ah, Cavendish has crashed,” so I immediately—because I didn’t check—said, “Cavendish has crashed.” And then he won the stage. That has repercussions, so now I’m super careful. It’s not the end of the world, but I looked pretty stupid.

Is that the worst thing you’ve got wrong?

Probably, although one day I dropped the cornichon [a small pickle] out my sandwich and [when I was trying to clean it off] I accidently pressed the pedal [which turns my mic on]. Which meant the whole of Radio Tour heard me shouting profanities about my sandwich.

So that’s how you turn your radio on, by pedal? How many different radios do you have?

I work with a pedal and a headset, and when I press on the pedal I speak to everyone on Radio Tour. So I don’t need to use my hands which is great. Then I have four different channels. Race radio is where I give out all the information that everyone has access to, even the photographers and TV directors. [This is a channel open to the public.] The second channel is what I use to speak to the motorbikes in front of me, which we call the info motos. We have race direction to speak with Christian Prudhomme [the race director] and the heads of ASO. Then we have a special channel for the commissaires [race officials].

Who’s normally in the car with you?

Always the same people. I’ve had the same driver for the last 14 years, Pascal Lance, who is a former rider. More or less, all the drivers of the ASO races are former pros because they know exactly how to react behind a peloton. Then there’s Thierry Gouvenou, the race course director, and the fourth person is a president of the commissaires appointed by the UCI.

What are the stress levels like in the car?

About four or five years ago we were on a slight downhill and there was this massive crash—like 40 riders went down. In those moments there’s quite a bit of stress. But it’s funny, you can’t be stressed because people feel it, and if they do, then they’ll be stressed and will react in an erratic way. It’s always about staying cool and focused and giving out information in a calm manner, like Hinault said.

At that crash, I gave out the bib numbers and rider names if I knew them, and we tried to move as quickly as possible because the race carries on and we have to be as close to the front as we can. Moments later there was another crash at the front of the pack, so another 15 guys on the floor. That was a real moment of stress in the car because we had no more doctors, they were all stopped on the first crash. We had no more ambulances. Even so, in that moment it’s not too stressful for me because I keep on doing my job. It’s stressful for the race director and the president of the commissaires because they have to make a decision quickly and decide if the race is still safe. You have to make a decision that won’t be too controversial for the riders. In that moment they decided to neutralize the race.

Were you covering the Ventoux stage in 2016 when Froome crashed and ran through the finish line ? That must have been a crazy moment.

Yeah, because we saw the crash—it was probably 50 meters ahead of us. But first of all we saw the crowds, and we thought, Shit something is going to happen here, this is not good. There were so many unfortunate circumstances on that day. It was supposed to finish at the top [of the mountain] but there was too much wind, so all the spectators that were supposed to have been on the final 4km were all down lower. And you couldn’t have barriers there because there was too much wind. Add those things together and it lead to that chaotic moment. We were behind and it was unbelievable to see the crash and the crowds, and then to see this guy running in front of us. We were thinking, Shit what’s he doing, is he aware that he’s not allowed to pass the line without his bike?

It must be hard to maintain that level of focus for so many hours.

That you get used to. But you never get used to [not] falling asleep, that’s a battle [laughs]. It really is a battle. Because on long, six- to seven-hour stages there’s always a moment during the day after your two sandwiches and a glass of champagne where you struggle.

What? You’re drinking champagne in the car?

Yeah, we have a bottle of champagne in the car on occasion and have a glass.

So how do you manage to not fall asleep?

It’s a struggle, you really do have to fight against it. You can’t sleep because at any moment of the race things can happen. Kilometer 15, kilometer 50, kilometer 120, anything can happen. There can be a crash, there can be a guy lifting his arm in the air because he’s thirsty, so you have to remain focused the whole time.

As I get older I struggle more with falling asleep, so I found this thing two or three years ago where I try to have power naps. So in that case I ask Thierry Gouvenou to do race radio and I put my alarm on and I sleep for 8-10 minutes. I don’t always sleep but at least I relax, close my eyes, and take a power nap. Don’t tell anyone. But you get used to it, you know, you have your routines—you have your can of Coke and your saucisson [sausage], my sweets and my sandwich.

What if you accidentally skip a part of the routine, has that ever happened?

I’m very privileged because the driver normally takes care of everything, getting the sandwiches, the water, the Coke and all that. But [at the Tour of] California last year the driver, who was a different driver [than usual], forgot my sandwich. Oh my god I was in a panic. I was thinking, How am I going to survive?

Was that a stressful moment?

Oh my god that was the most stressful day of the last 15 years. [laughs].

Communication in the Tour de France: How Does It Work?

When you have 22 teams of eight riders each, as in this year’s Tour de France, as well as team vehicles, support vehicles from the Tour de France organizers, the ASO, as well as press motorcycles on the road, and the riders are riding kilometers apart, especially on mountain stages, a perfectly functioning communication system is essential to the success of the race. Team directors must be able to communicate with each of their riders, to inform them of their positions in the stage, of the strategy, which often changes during a stage, of each rider’s role in carrying out that strategy, of any obstacles or dangerous patches that may lie ahead and of the time gap between the team leader and his rivals. In addition, riders must be able to alert their racing teams on their physical condition, if they need refreshment and, especially, if they are hurt or their bike has broken down.

The process of setting up a flawless communication system for each team begins several days before the start of the Tour when of the race jury consults with each team to establish its individual and unique team radio frequency for its onboard radio system. That ensures that other teams are unable to listen in on team communications and that there is no accidental radio interference.

When riding a stage, most of the riders are equipped with an onboard radio that weighs about 200 grams. In addition, team cars, which are often stuck behind their cyclists, need to be informed if one of their riders has crashed and where and if they are pulling away from the peloton in a breakaway or are riding alone. The race radio gives permission to these vehicles to break out of the procession order and speed up to catch up to the rider who needs assistance. Cars are not allowed to break out of the procession order – which is determined by team standings in the race – unless they are given clearance to do so. This clearance is usually given if a rider is in a breakaway with a lead of at least 1 minute over the peloton or a rider has crashed or is otherwise in need of medical assistance. Coming to the aid of a rider is less of a problem in the plains when the peloton is usually racing over multilane roads. However, it becomes quite difficult during mountain stages, when roads are often narrow and sinuous.

There is also a radio channel that connects only the two cars serving each team. This enables the team directors to establish who will help which riders and whether to stop and swap rider-specific equipment, a decision that usually depends on a rider’s position in the peloton.

When this communication system works flawlessly, you will see a domestique or a support rider drop out of the peloton to collect water bottles and other refreshments from a team car, a rider with a punctured tire being given a new bike just seconds after he dismounted and a rider on a breakaway being handed a water bottle with 30 kilometers remaining on the stage.

Tour de France's proposed radio ban criticised by riders and teams

As the teams gathered here for Saturday's start of the 2009 Tour de France , two prominent riders and one team director today expressed disapproval of the organiser's intention to ban the use of radio communication during two stages in the middle week of the race, claiming that it threatens their safety.

"Next they'll be asking us to ride for two days without helmets, or without cables in our brakes," said the veteran German rider Jens Voigt, twice a wearer of the Tour's yellow jersey, during a press conference given by his Saxo Bank team.

Since the mid-1990s, team directors have used radios to keep in contact with their riders, providing them with a stream of tactical instructions and information concerning the state of the race. By banning the devices during a flat run from Limoges to Issoudun on 14 July and a much hillier affair including two first‑category climbs between Vittel and Colmar three days later, the organisers are clearly hoping to reintroduce an element of old-fashioned spontaneity and uncertainty.

It is a scheme that, by and large, divides the generations. Older fans, and riders of previous generations who are no longer involved in racing, see it as a positive move to break the almost robotic degree of control that some teams, including those led by Lance Armstrong, have exerted over the race in recent years. To today's riders, who have known nothing else, it seems an inexplicable folly that puts their security at risk.

The sporting directors will no longer find it as easy to warn the riders of hazards lying ahead, and to pass information they will have to spend more time manoeuvring their cars through the peloton, with a consequent increase in risk on narrow roads often thronged with spectators.

"In a race like the Tour de France," Voigt continued, "there can be a motorcycle crash, or a truck blocking the road, or oil on the road on a descent, and the radios can save our skin."

Bjarne Riis, his team director, whose 1996 Tour victory was annulled a decade later when he admitted having taken drugs, was equally adamant. "It puts a risk on the teams," he said. "It's pretty nervous out there in the race and for two days the sporting directors will be panicking. They'll all be wanting to drive up to the front of the peloton to talk to their riders. There will be a scandal out of it."

Stijn Devolder, the 29-year-old former Belgian champion who rides for the Quick-Step team, pointed out that few of this year's riders have experience of riding without radios. "It's something they did 10 or 20 years ago," he said. "With the radios, it's pretty easy to know everything that's happening, like how far ahead a breakaway is. It's only two stages, but they are difficult ones and those days will be a different kind of racing and there will be a different kind of result. I don't think it's a good idea. For safety, maybe it's better with the radio."

Voigt is 37, the same age as Lance Armstrong, but unlike the American – who rode in the mid-90s for the Motorola squad, pioneers of team-to-rider radio – he has never ridden the Tour without the benefit of an earpiece.

"Imagine if they asked the formula one drivers to do the grand prix here without the radio to the pits," he said. "They'd go, 'Excuse me, is anybody alive there?' So I don't think it's such a great idea."

Fiorentina, Joe Barone... e Tour de France

Purtroppo questa puntata è capitata nella settimana funesta nella quale è avvenuta la scomparsa del DG della Fiorentina, Joe Barone e non potevamo non affrontare l'argomento.  Io e Francesco abbiamo cercato di parlare di come verrà affrontato dalla società viola il prossimo futuro dal punto di vista gestionale, cercando anche un po' di sdrammatizzare. Giro 2024 : Olav Kooij s'impose au sprint devant Jonathan Milan lors de la 9e étape, Tadej Pogacar toujours leader

Vainqueur vendredi sur le contre-la-montre et samedi au sommet du Prati di Tivo , Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) s'est encore montré, dimanche 12 mai, lors de l'arrivée au sprint de la 9e étape du Giro. C'est le Slovène qui a impulsé la remontée du peloton dans les derniers mètres, se muant en poisson-pilote pour Juan Sebastian Molano, pour réduire à néant les espoirs de Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos Grenadiers), parti à quelques kilomètres de l'arrivée. Mais le plus fort était bien Olav Kooij (Visma - Lease a bike), qui a montré sa pointe de vitesse à Naples pour s'imposer, à 22 ans, pour la première fois sur un Grand Tour devant le maillot cyclamen (promis au meilleur sprinteur) Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek).

Avant cela, Mirco Maestri et Andrea Pietrobon (Polti Kometa) s'étaient illustrés à l'avant. Présents dans l'échappée du jour, les deux Italiens ont passé près de 188 kilomètres en tête avant que le peloton ne serre la vis. A l'approche du final, les Français Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) et Ewen Costiou (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) ont tenté leur chance, en vain. Jhonatan Narvaez, lui, n'était pas loin du bon coup avant que les cadors du sprint ne lui grillent la politesse.

A noter qu'Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), 11e au général, n'a pas pris le départ de cette 9e étape, permettant au premier coureur tricolore, Alex Baudin (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), de remonter à la 12e place, à 6'34 de Pogacar. Frayeur également pour Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), 3e, qui a chuté lors de cette 9e étape, mais qui a pu finir dans le peloton.

La Casa de Velázquez : 17 chercheurs en résidence à Madrid - Épisode 3/3

Marie sorbier termine son séjour à la casa de velázquez à madrid, une résidence qui a la spécificité rare d'accueillir à la fois des artistes, mais aussi des chercheurs. dans ce dernier épisode, rencontre avec des chercheuses en résidence, un directeur d'étude et une visite de la bibliothèque..

Après  s'être entretenu avec différents artistes en résidence , Marie Sorbier continue son Grand Tour  au sein de la Casa de Velázquez à Madrid  en allant à la rencontre d'autres pensionnaires, d'un des directeurs d'étude de la Casa puis en visitant la bibliothèque. La Casa de Velázquez est l'une des cinq résidences artistiques administrées par la France à l'étranger avec  la Villa Médicis en Italie ,  la Villa Kujoyama au Japon , la Villa Swagatam en Inde et la Villa Albertine aux États-Unis. La spécificité de cette résidence madrilène est qu'elle propose à la fois des résidences pour des artistes, mais aussi pour des chercheurs. Tous doivent néanmoins traiter de thématiques et de sujets en rapport avec la péninsule ibérique, les pays d'Amérique du Sud ou le Maghreb. Construite en 1928 sous l'impulsion de l'archéologue Pierre Paris,  la Casa de Velázquez accueille chaque année 17 artistes et 17 chercheurs en résidence longue.

L'occasion donc de découvrir les travaux de trois chercheuses. D'abord ceux de la médiéviste  Laura Baldacchino  qui portent sur le  Libro de las donas, une traduction du premier traité sur les femmes écrit en Espagne au XVe siècle. Puis Marie Sorbier tend son micro à  Aliénor Asselot , hispaniste, qui a terminé au sein de la Casa de Velázquez sa thèse sur les  liens entre les images d'enfants et la société bourgeois en Espagne au XIXe siècle.  Laura Flety , anthropologue, travaille quant à elle sur un rituel religieux d'un village espagnol situé près de Tolède qui met en scène différents danseurs. Toutes bénéficient d'une bourse de recherches et sont à la Casa de Velázquez pour un temps long compris entre un et trois an. Une période durant laquelle elles peuvent approfondir leurs recherches sans avoir de contraintes administratives comme l'explique Aléinor Asselot : "On n'a pas de cours à donner, on a peu de charges administratives ce qui est extrêmement précieux. Ca permet effectivement d'avoir une sorte de précision, d'immersion dans une bibliographie, dans des sources, et de se laisser aussi porter par des pratiques, une forme de sérendipité."

L'une des autres richesses qu'offre la Casa de Velazquez c'est cette cohabitation entre des artistes et des chercheurs qui partagent les mêmes espaces et vivent ensemble. Une manière de créer des dialogues entre des disciplines artistiques et scientifiques et de nourrir la curiosité et les idées de chacun comme le raconte Aliénor Asselot :  "Selon les affinités, les sujets, on peut avoir des discussions communes, des projets communs, dans certains cas des tables rondes, des publications illustrées..." Laura Flety abonde dans son sens et détaille :  "C'est une question de feeling, de rencontres et puis aussi de thème de travail qui fait résonance ou non. Dans mon cas comme celui de la danse, effectivement, tous les artistes qui travaillent avec le corps, avec la question de la performativité par exemple, cela peut m'intéresser. On a aussi des liens interdisciplinaires qui se font avec des affinités thématiques, donc personnelles, mais aussi en fonction de nos thématiques de travail."
