We loved the entire Trek to the Lost City in Colombia, the range of sites, climates, topography, landscape and altitudes was immensely rewarding. The program was intense but not overly. Always something of interest, but with enough down-time. Very well planned, and the opportunity to see quite a lot of famous places on the western site in Colombia. Definitely we recommend you guys to everyone we know. I will contact you again if we decide to travel back to South America next year.

Hidden Colombia - Explore Bogotá, Santa Marta, and Trek to 'The Lost City'

My mother and I went on the Hidden Colombia trek to the Lost City back in January/February of 2015 and were so absolutely amazed at our experience! Almost every single thing was taken care of for us by OneSeed: from our airport rides in Bogota, our B&B accommodations, our flight to Santa Marta, all meals while on the breath-taking hike to La Ciudad Perdida, and so much more! Our guides, Sally and Wilson, were beyond great, and our cook, Danilo, was fabulous! We had three perfect meals per day, plus a couple carb-loaded snacks in between to fuel our bodies throughout the day while climbing the Andes. Our experience was so perfect, that my mom and I went AGAIN in January, 2016! We just simply had a craving for more intense hiking. The second time around was just as great as the first. Hopefully we will be booking a third trip with OneSeed in the next few months, either to Machu Picchu or back to Colombia! I would recommend them to anybody!

Overall, this tour was really excellent. We added 3 days to the 11 day advertised tour to make a 2 week vacation and felt like we experienced all the best highlights of Colombia. “The Colombia Trip” took care of all the arrangements including our addit and the organization was extremely smooth. Everything was totally private and we had excellent guides with us at each location. They had good English and were very knowledgeable about each place we visited. The 5 stops we had - 1 Bogota/Zipaquirá, 2 Salento/Cocora, 3 Medillin/Guatape 4 Tayrona and 5 Cartagena were all excellent, different and very worthwhile - I wouldn’t change a thing. A couple things to be aware of when planning - the altitude and hence weather conditions in the different locations are considerably different so you need to be prepared for all scenarios and yet you change hotels quite often so need to pack relatively light. Also climbing the rock at Guatape is not for those with vertigo and the Tayrona hike whilst not too long or too difficult - and well worth it - is very tough in the heat and humidity. Overall Colombia is still discovering being a tourist destination which means it’s mostly unspoiled however a Spanish phrase book is a must for when your guide is not with you. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this mostly undiscovered yet beautiful country to all fellow travelers…..Favorite spot? That’s tough as it was all so different and amazing but ..probably Cocora valley!

During the Lost City Trek Colombia, we will stay at rustic accommodations located along the path, provided by local people who will offer us a comfortable and safe staying in hammocks or bunk beds cover by a waterproof roof. They will also provide Blankets and mosquito nets.

Our guides are locals with great experience on the route who we have supported, trained and certified to relevant private and public authorities. Therefore, they can develop guidance tourist activities in an environmentally and socially responsible way throughout the the best trek to Ciudad Perdida Lost City. All our tours have a bilingual translator.

In addition to the amazing beaches facing the Caribbean Sea and the gigantic chain of mountains that surround the city, Santa Marta is also a place steeped in history and culture. To explore this aspect of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, take a Santa Marta city tour to visit the main attractions and cultural sights .

This city tour in Santa Marta begins in the afternoon aboard a vehicle which will take you through the area of  El Rodadero , famous for its beach resorts. Next, head on to the Ruta del Sol (the road connecting the coastal cities), which will take you to Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino . This classic republican-style hacienda (farm) has been converted into a museum to commemorate the life and work of Simon Bolivar – the architect of Colombia’s independence. Here you can learn how the great personalities of Colombia lived in the nineteenth century as you take a guided tour through the hacienda .

Afterwards, cross the main avenues of the city to see the monument of “ Pibe Valderrama ” – one of the most beloved football players in Colombia. Ciudad Perdida Trek Teyuna o Buritaca-200 es uno de los más de 250 poblados antiguos de los cuatro grupos indígenas encontrados en la cara norte...

… y suroeste de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta en el departamento del Magdalena al norte de Colombia, descubierta en 1976 por un equipo de arqueólogos del Instituto Colombiano de Antropología encabezado por Gilberto Cadavid y Luisa Fernada Herrera y restaurado casi en su totalidad.

Los miembros de las tribus locales descendientes de la cultura Tayrona o tairona – los Arhuacos , los Koguis y los Wiwas – han declarado que visitaron el sitio con regularidad antes de que fuera ampliamente descubierto , pero habían guardado silencio al respecto. Llaman al Ciudad Perdida Trek “Teyuna” y creen que fue el corazón de una red de aldeas habitadas por sus antepasados, los Tayrona.

¿Qué fue la Ciudad Perdida?

Ciudad Perdida fue probablemente el centro político y manufacturero de la región a orillas del río Buritaca y pudo haber albergado 2.000 a 8.000 personas. Aparentemente fue abandonada durante la conquista española.

¿Que se encuentra en la Ciudad Perdida de Santa Marta?

Se levanta entre los 900 y los 1.300 metros de altura,1​ sobre las estribaciones del Cerro Corea, en la zona norte de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta sobre la margen derecha del Río Buritaca. Es conocido como Teyuna por los indígenas de la zona y por ende su nombre compuesto: Parque Arqueológico Ciudad Perdida-Teyuna, aunque dentro de la nomenclatura de sitios arqueológicos para la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta también se le conoce como Buritaca-200.

El lugar comprende un complejo sistema de construcciones, caminos empedrados (Caminos construidos con piedras), escaleras y muros intercomunicados por una serie de terrazas y plataformas sobre las cuales se construyeron los centros ceremoniales, casas y sitios de almacenamiento de víveres. 

¿Qué tan grande es la Ciudad Perdida?

Las estructuras descubiertas hasta ahora ocupan un área de aproximadamente 35 hectáreas, en las cuales se pueden encontrar hasta 169 terrazas de piedra. Desde su descubrimiento ha sido administrado por el Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia (ICANH) como Parque Arqueológico Nacional Ciudad Perdida Teyuna.

Al ser una reserva arqueológica conservada por la autoridad nacional y los actuales indígenas residentes en estas tierras, para hacer el Ciudad Perdida trek y llegar a la Ciudad Perdida se debe hacer una serie de contribuciones tanto a las comunidades de la zona, campesinas e indígenas, quienes se encargan de mantener la paz y armonía en este lugar ancestral.

Es un trekking de más de 50 kilómetros que se realiza en una selva tropical, con humedad muy elevada y temperaturas altas (hasta 32°C); en las noches la temperatura puede descender hasta los 17-18°C. Hay muchos mosquitos, jejenes y otros insectos por lo que se recomienda llevar repelente. Hay alta probabilidad de lluvias, por lo general al atardecer y el sendero puede tener partes apantanadas y durante el tour se deben cruzar ríos y quebradas.

Colombia’s Santa Marta Mountains & Caribbean Coast

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is an isolated mountain range on the Caribbean coast of Colombia topped by the country’s highest peak, home to permanent snowfields that are within sight of the sea. This mountain range, separated from the Andes by about 50 miles, is also one of the most endemic-rich areas in the world, resulting in many avian endemics with "Santa Marta" in the name—frankly, it can be a bit repetitive!

Our tour starts and ends in the coastal city of Barranquilla, famous for being the hometown of several of Colombia’s biggest international celebrities (Sofia Vergara and Shakira, for starters!). We will visit nearby semi-deciduous woodlands, mangroves, and marshes along the lowest stretch of the great Magdalena River, which empties into the Caribbean Sea at the city. Our travels next will take us east to the Guajira Peninsula, near the Venezuelan border, where Colombia’s driest desert can be found, and with it some range-restricted specialties such as White-whiskered Spinetail, Tocuyo Sparrow, and Vermilion Cardinal. After suffering the heat of the lowlands (but the birds make it worth it!), we finally turn our attention to the centerpiece of this trip: the northwest slopes of the Santa Martas! We will stay in a comfortable lodge at about 6000 feet elevation on an outlying ridge of the mountains, enjoying feeders around our lodging and visiting several elevations nearby for many of the endemic birds, as well as other species of interest.

We normally encounter about 300 species in 8 days of birding. Highlights (in addition to those mentioned above) include Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, White-tailed Starfrontlet, Lazuline Sabrewing, White-tipped Quetzal, Russet-throated Puffbird, Chestnut Piculet, Black-backed Antshrike, Brown-rumped Tapaculo, Streak-capped and Rusty-headed spinetails, Golden-breasted Fruiteater, Spectacled Tyrannulet, Hermit Wood-Wren, Golden-winged Sparrow, Yellow-crowned Redstart, Glaucous and Black-headed tanagers, Orinoco Saltator, and a whole list of birds with “Santa Marta” as the first part of their names: SM Woodstar, SM Blossomcrown, SM Screech-Owl (only described in 2017), SM Parakeet, SM Antbird, SM Antpitta, SM Tapaculo, SM Brushfinch, and SM Warbler. It’s a lot of great birds to see and enjoy, so what are you waiting for? We’ll see you in this little corner of paradise, and don’t forget your binoculars!

Sweating through the North Coast

If you see a travel blog claiming that Santa Marta is the best part of Colombia, don’t finish reading that blog. While it's an ideal base camp for the cloud forest (Minca), Taganga beach, Tayrona National Park, and Palomino, its reputation as a destination on its own was disappointing at best.

Arriving at our hostel, drenched in sweat from the relentless humidity, we discovered the water filter was broken and tap water was off-limits. To add to the discomfort, the front desk assistant pointed out two dangerous streets to avoid—one that we had just walked down. But our spirits lifted when we reunited with our friend Johanne and enjoyed overpriced smoothies at a local cafe!

The next day, we sought out a colectivo (shuttle bus) to Minca. Despite the supposed ease of finding one, we navigated chaotic streets with buses, more “ a la orden ” sneak attacks, and insistent taxi drivers until we finally found a man shouting "Minca!" outside a legitimate office. We squeezed into the tiny colectivo like sardines for the 45-minute ride.

Minca, i.e. Ocean Beach in Colombia, beckoned us to try the local coffee. Instead of opting for the popular but pricey coffee tour an hour up the hill, we embarked on an adventure to find an obscure, unnamed coffee tour on Google Maps with no reviews and no identifying landmarks around it. After a 20-minute trek through a hidden hiking trail, we stumbled upon the farm tour, enjoying fresh coffee, mango, and café de crema.

Our adventure continued as we braved heavy rain and slippery trails to El Oído del Mundo waterfall. Across the river, a tiny sign led us to a finca where a man welcomed us with pastries and more fresh coffee, sharing stories of Santa Marta’s indigenous people. He even provided walking sticks for our return trek. Back in Minca, we ended the day with cacao and sandwiches at a local café. One day wasn’t enough, but we returned to Santa Marta, ready for our next adventure: scuba diving.

I didn’t expect to enjoy scuba diving, given my lifelong fear of underwater life. Kim and I opted for a mini course to test the water (teehee), which turned out to be beyond breathtaking, and I instantly regretted my choice not to get myself certified (…yet…). We spent the rest of the day hiking to a viewpoint and a secluded beach in Taganga with two of our incredibly kind diving guides. Despite Taganga's complex history, which includes quite an intense story involving both drug and human trafficking, we were content to experience its kinder side that day with our new friends.

Our next destination was the beachy town of Palomino, planned for only two days but extended to five. This seems to be the case for most people. We stayed at a hostel that felt like an oasis, complete with a gazebo full of hammocks, a yoga area, kayaks for the onsite river, a private beach path, outdoor showers, and daily group activities.

Our first full day involved a mangrove tour through the jungle, where we encountered a swarm of tiny, tick-like insects that grabbed onto our clothes, listened to the howler monkeys announcing their presence, and navigated snake-filled terrain. We climbed over logs, down muddy slopes, and through spider webs until reaching a strip of land separating the river from the sea. The jungle’s ruggedness felt powerful . Our guide told us that we were not allowed to bring bad thoughts into the jungle, because it’s a sign of disrespect to the strength of the foliage around us. I didn’t want to mess with jungle powers, so I kept my spirits high.

Later, we took a break from jungle energy and enjoyed the best Argentinian-style empanadas in town, perusing through the shops lining the main street. The next day, we ventured to the private beach, where we excitedly ate a fresh coconut cut down by a fellow backpacker. We finished our stay in Palomino kayaking through the jungle, accompanied by the hostel’s dogs.

Though sad to leave Palomino, the promise of our next stop kept us excited. Vamos a Tayrona!
