Michael Bolton; Celine Dion

Michael Bolton kicked off the pop series of concerts at the Hollywood Bowl Monday, amid concern from nearby residents that the series would bring unwanted noise and ill-behaved fans rather than those who attend the classical music events typically held at the outdoor venue.

But Bolton’s set, as well as the crowd’s behavior, was top-drawer, as the pop crooner flashed back and fast-forwarded, serving up spirited renditions of cuts that ran the gamut from his debut Columbia Records disc “The Hunger” to his untitled, soon-to-be-released disc of R&B standards and everything in between.

Bolton, who has characterized critics who respond negatively about his style as “no-talented chimpanzees … destroy(ing) a Van Gogh,” was in fine vocal form , creating 15-minute opuses from four-minute songs, wowing the house at every high-noted turn.

Popular on Variety

Although he brings more to the table vocally than Otis Redding or Percy Sledge (two artists from whom he has borrowed heavily with nary an acknowledgment), Bolton’s versions of “Dock of the Bay” and “When a Man Loves a Woman”–the latter striking gold almost to the day in 1966–lack the soul of the ’60s classics.

The appearance of Kenny G, and the duo’s performance on the roof of a shed in the middle of the Bowl, were two of the evening’s several high points. A rousing set finale of “Time, Love and Tenderness,” featuring a gospel choir, would easily have converted any non-fans.

Opener Celine Dion, touring in support of her self-titled, sophomore Epic Records disc, put forth a performance that had headliner written all over it.

Although it was the Canadian artist’s first night of her first U.S. tour, Dion showed the style and grace of a seasoned pro, while still retaining her youthful enthusiasm.

Perhaps best known for her duet version with Peabo Bryson of “Beauty and the Beast,” Dion’s well-paced, far-too-brief set was filled with gems.

Disc’s current radio and VH-1 fave “If You Asked Me To” and “Love Can Move Mountains” showcased her sultry vocals and strong material, impressing those who had the good sense to arrive early.

Things To Do Music and Concerts

Michael bolton, all his soulful hits, to be at mgm northfield park, this could be the valentine’s gift she (or he) is waiting for.

Michael Bolton says he recorded what will be his first new album in a while remotely during the pandemic. (Andrew Macpherson)

Over the past four decades, the multiple Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter — a soul provider for the ages — sold more than 75 million records globally thanks to hits such as “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” “Time, Love and Tenderness,” “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” “How Can We Be Lovers” and “To Love Some Somebody.”

These days, the blue-eyed soul singer and former People magazine “Sexiest Men in his 50s” designee is still going strong at 69 with a new tour that includes a show Feb. 9 at the MGM Northfield Park Center Stage.

We recently chatted with Bolton about Celine Dion taking his audience, his new studio album and the best way for fans to celebrate an early Valentine’s Day this winter.

Q What are your memories of coming to Northeast Ohio?

A I did get to see Cleveland play basketball with that gigantic jumbotron. That was fantastic. I think I’ve been touring through Cleveland something like 35 years. I have all kinds of memories of great audiences. It’s definitely a city where they give it up. You don’t have to work real hard to get involvement from the audience, which makes it feel better for everybody.

Q One of your early dates took place in the summer of 1990, when you headlined Blossom Music Center with opener Kenny G.

A The early ’90s, Kenny was part of one tour, and Celine Dion was my opening act on another. It was crazy, surreal. I introduced Celine to my audience — that became her audience. Everything was just starting to take off for her then. Those shed tours were pretty amazing.

Q As a product of the late ’80s and early ’90s pop scene, do you think it’s different today?

A Yes because it skews young. Everyone wants to court a new audience, but you can’t really be too aggressive in doing that or it’ll sound manufactured, trying to win over teenagers and those in their young 20s. Fortunately, I had enough mainstream success to have this spillover effect where I’m often very surprised at how young the audience is. We just recently got back from South Korea. We’re doing 45 to 50 dates a year, so we’re on the road but we just don’t stay out as long.

Q Your last studio release of new material was 2009’s “One World One Love.” Any chance you’re working on a new album?

A Because of Zoom and digital recording — technology allows us to do amazing things — I did an entire album through the pandemic. That should be out in the spring. The working title of the album is “Spark of Light.” It’s going in a new direction. It’s fresh. The “Spark of Light” track is like a modern Fleetwood Mac — it’s got a power in the production but a steady groove like Mick Fleetwood lays down. I’m really excited about it.

Q Are you doing any of the new unreleased songs on this tour?

A I’m not sure, but I feel like there could be two or three ready to play for this tour. The greatest hits are why, at this point in my career, fans come to the show. These are songs they grew up with, they had their highest and greatest moments of joy in their lives and some of the toughest challenges in life. And they remembered my music through all of that.

Q With that in mind, and considering the timing of your upcoming Cleveland area show, is there a better Valentine’s Day surprise than tickets to a night with Michael Bolton?

A (Laughs) I think you answered your own question there. It’s rhetorical, right? Is there a better surprise? It’s a great idea.

Q Finally, are you still a soul provider?

A In so many ways, yes.

Michael Bolton

When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9.

Where: MGM Northfield Park Center Stage, 10777 Northfield Road, Northfield.

Michael Bolotin (born February 26th, 1953), better known by his professional name, Michael Bolton, is an American singer and songwriter. He hails from New Haven Connecticut.

The early stages of Bolton’s career saw him flirting primarily with hard rock and even metal stylings; through the mid-seventies to early-eighties, he released a slew of solo albums in the above styles, in addition to a few records with the band that he was fronting at the time, Blackjack. The late eighties, though, saw a change in musical direction for Bolton, as he instead began to turn towards more standard pop rock balladry. The decision went on to pay massive dividends, both commercially and critically; Bolton can now lay claim to having sold no fewer than seventy-five million records worldwide, as well as having scooped a clutch of American Music Awards and Grammy Awards.

Bolton’s move towards easy listening began in earnest in 1987, when he covered Otis Redding’s ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay’ to great acclaim. His next album, 1989’s ‘Soul Provider’, would go on to be his first U.S. chart-topper. His biggest hits are probably the two tracks that reached the corresponding summit on the singles charts in his homeland, too: 1990’s ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You’ and then his signature hit the following year – ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’.

Live reviews

Actually I am a SPIRITUAL CERTIFIED PSYCHIC MEDIUM and my husband Michael Green and I attended MICHAEL BOLTON'S CONCERT @ Casino Windsor on Thursday December 13th and this is some of what I posted to my facebook group: Last night my hubby Mike and I attended the Michael Bolton Concert at Caesars Windsor gifted to me in November for my birthday by our daughter Terri, her husband Albert and our precious grandchildren. We had 6th row floor seats that were excellent and very close in proximity to the stage

So, Mike and I were in full concert mode, singing, laughing and chair dancing ;) Michael Bolton announced that he was going to sing a song made famous by Celine Dion, The Prayer!

He started to sing this Beautiful Song, a duet and the tears welled up in my eyes. I grabbed Mikes hand, squeezed it and noticed he was wiping the tears that were streaming down his face as well, the memories, oh the memories came flooding back and when I looked at him we both said in concession to one another Gloria--Lucy and Mike said "girls are you here"? I smiled at him, nodded and squeezed his hand again. I turned to look forward as I was going to watch them on stage and I noticed and excitedly said "Mike look, as i pointed to a feather" a white little feather that was floating down towards us both and landed on top of my finger."

Michael sang more songs, he is EXTREMELY TALENTED and Oh,SOOOO EASY on the eyes ;) he CAN sing ANYTHING!! He sang his hits, motown, Christmas and so many others his voice continues to be strong and he sounds the way he always did! He brought excitement as well as laughter to the crowd. IF you have NOT had the privilege of seeing MB live or listen to his music (why)???? You MUST!!! Michael came down through the crowd singing and many of us rushed to the stage, I included, but was not fortunate enough to grasp his hand, so I went back to my seat and there on the floor by the vacant seat beside me, was a loonie! Yep a loonie another verification from my 2 sisters on the other side. The concert was over, I said to Mike, sit down we don't need to rush, were not in a hurry lets wait till the crowd settles down. Mike then said Dad, "girls did yous like the concert" again I looked forward and down came this Beautiful huge white feather which I pointed out to Mike Look, look I said, do you see it? With a smile and a nod he nodded yes I see it.

So you see not only was this a birthday gift but loved ones on the other side. Heaven came down to see his concert. :) MICHAEL BOLTON you have MANY fans all over the world as well as in Heaven.

I saw Michael Bolton at the Venetian Resort and Casino back in February 2013. The Venetian’s concert hall is gorgeous and designed with beauty and acoustics in mind. Michael had three backup singers; three beautiful women and a 5 member band aside from himself. The event was for the launch of his new album then, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.

I’d always been a fan of Michael Bolton thanks to my folks, who insisted on listening to him when we went on road trips. Truth be told, I wasn’t a huge fan until I went away for college and listening to his music made me feel homesick. But it also made me think of the great memories I had as a kid.

Michael wore a solid black suit that made him look more youthful than he would have with another colored suit. The concert was also attended by dozens of other musicians. It was an amazing experience seeing some of the legends of Motown there.

The crowd was so into the Michael’s singing that everyone would often get out of their seats and sway with the rest of the crowd at the lyrics and the beats. The experience made me feel as if I was high on top of the world, as cliché as that sounds. It’s the truth!

Connecticut singer/songwriter has been on the scene for four decades, an incredible fact to support an incredible musician who is considered to have one of the most unique tones of voice of our time. The multi-instrumentalist is now into his 60s yet he shows no signs of slowing down his intense touring schedule.

This is perhaps due to the fact the musician is clearly so happy onstage, you could not really imagine him doing anything else with his time. He is a delight to watch perform and even more of a delight to hear speak as between much loved tracks he regales the crowd with tales of their incarnation, his travels around the globe and sharing the stage with huge names including Ozzy Osborne and Celine Dion.

Then of course he has a barrage of hits including 'How Am I Supposed to Live Without You' and 'When a Man Loves a Woman' of which the crowds go absolutely wild for. As well as his own popular work, he covers songs by icons such as Otis Redding and Billy Joel in his own musical mannerisms. There is no doubt about it, if Bolton had decided to retire then the circuit would be losing one of its greats.

I might be a tad partial because he has been my favorite performer for 26 years, but this show was amazing. The venue was small, very intimate setting. He was funny, personable and made the audience feel like he was there just for them. The band is awesome, they really enhance the performance. After all these years he still has it, I can't wait to see him again very soon! Classic songs mixed with his top hits, he even sings in Italian and with Amanda Brown thrum duets were off the charts

My daughter bought tickets for my birthday and she accompanied me. She grew up with Bolton' s music which we first heard when we lived in Turkey in 1990. We both enjoyed the concert. Michael sang an interesting range of songs. I loved his duet: My Prayer and Georgia which is the first song I ever heard. His band was superb. I am a big fan of the saxophone so I loved listening to this instrument. The venue in The Royal Albert Hall was wonderful. We enjoyed being there.

Michael Bolton is an amazing artist who puts his heart and soul in his singing. He never gets distracted from the reason he has so many fans. Add to that his good looks and fun personality. He is worth the money and time to attend his concerts. Want to see him live once again.

It's been two years since i last saw him and he has lost none of his enthusiasm and showmanship.

His voice is as powerful as ever and made more memorable when he did his walkabout in the second half, mingling with fans and singing.

The farcical Céline Dion jukebox musical Titanique  is setting its course for Canada.

Producers of the off-Broadway smash say the show will make its maiden voyage to Montreal later this year, followed by dates in Toronto.

Titanique  is a musical parody of James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster Titanic . It's centred on a Dion character who crashes a tour group at a Titanic museum before leading them through the supposed true story of Jack and Rose.

Some of the Quebecois superstar's biggest hits are scattered throughout the comedy, including A New Day Has Come ,  I Drove All Night  and the unsinkable love anthem My Heart Will Go On .

The uphill battle for Canadian theatre productions, performers

An early version of the show premiered in Los Angeles seven years ago, but Titanique  became a buzzworthy hit in 2022 when its off-Broadway performances drew enthusiastic reviews and big crowds shortly after theatres reopened from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The book was co-written by Marla Mindelle, who played the role of Dion off-Broadway. For the Canadian dates, Quebec vocal powerhouse Véronique Claveau will take on the part.

The rest of the 13-member cast will be announced at a future date.

Titanique  is slated for performances at Montreal's Segal Centre for the Performing Arts from Oct. 27 to Nov. 24. It will then move to Toronto's CAA Theatre from Dec. 5 to Jan. 12 as part of the off-Mirvish subscription season.
