Costa Rica

Couples who love nature as much as each other will find their perfect getaway in Costa Rica. Long considered one of the world’s most bio-diverse countries, partners will find plenty of places to commune with nature like walking through the cloud forest at Poas Volcano National Park, or hiking the tropical forest of Manuel Antonio Park on the lookout for capuchin monkeys, coatis, sloths, and the elusive quetzal. 0 Unique Vacation Ideas for Couples is also a great destination where couples can satisfy their cultural curiosities with sustainable cuisine, local artisan handicrafts, creole swing dance, and historical walks in San José, Cartago, Puntarenas, and Limón. Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs offers couples an enchanting getaway in the mountains. Outdoorsy couples looking for a unique getaway will find it at an authentic Colorado Springs guest ranch. At Lost Valley Ranch couples can choose Western adventures from cattle round-ups to rodeos, cowboy cookouts, square dancing, and many others. The Broadmoor Fly Fishing Camp provides couples with a world-class fishing experience combined with accommodations in a 1940s miner’s cabin. City slickers will be inspired by Colorado Springs’s craft brew scene. With over 30 craft breweries and distilleries, taking the Crafts and Drafts tour is the best way to sample them. An absolute must-do is a trip to the top of Pike’s Peak together – by car, train, bike, or on foot. Things to Do in Colorado Springs

London

London getaways for two are all about choices. Equestrians will want to take the reins along the famous Rotten Row bridle path in Hyde Park. The 322-foot-long champagne bar in St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel, self-proclaimed the “most romantic building” in London, is the place to toast life together with one of over 17 champagne varieties. A stroll along the Grand Canal in Little Venice to admire the colorful houseboats offers quiet moments. Or, couples can take in the cosmopolitan charm of Notting Hill with its edgy art and theater scene and distinctive restaurants. Of course, there’s the obligatory Buckingham Palace Tour followed by afternoon tea. Savvy couples can plan their getaway around one of the city’s popular events like Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Things to Do in London

Toronto

Everyone defines a couple’s getaway differently. For hockey fans, especially Toronto Maple Leaf fans, there’s nothing quite like experiencing the thrill of victory together surrounded by equally passionate, screaming fans. For a more subdued on ice experience, couples can make their way to Nathan Phillips Square for a few arm-in-arm laps around the rink. Partners can break out the long white gloves and black bowtie at the Canadian Opera Company in the Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts. Things to Do in Toronto

Paris

Paris was made for romance. Of course, nothing is more romantic than nighttime views from the top of Eiffel Tower. A late-afternoon walk along the River Seine to watch the dramatic tango dancers, or a stroll through the hidden alleyways with their charming bars and eateries makes for a few pleasurable hours of coziness. Shared conversation over a glass of wine at Clos de Montmartre gives couples down time in a beautiful setting. Couples will definitely want to make their ways to Bois de Vincennes Park where they’ll discover the Temple of Love on an island in the middle of the lake. It can be accessed by footbridge or rowboat. Things to Do in Paris

Miami

Biscayne offers couples opportunities to explore the nation’s largest marine park. History buffs will be enchanted with Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in Coconut Grove. The Venetian Pool, a historic swimming pool with stone bridges and waterfalls, offers a mix of beauty and tranquility. Next read: Miami beaches , Things to Do in Miami

Santorini

Santorini is a group of five Greek Islands in the southern Cyclades. This is the premier destination for romance in all of Greece. Oia is renowned for its famous sunset views, but will also dazzle couples with its panoramic views, stunning architecture, and delectable Greek cuisine. In fact, combining an Oia sunset with a scrumptious dinner at Ambrosia restaurant will make for incredible memories. A ride up or down the Fira cliffs on the modern Santorini Cable Car is not only fast, but offers spectacular views. Hot Springs and volcano mudbath tours from Old Port provide a sensual few hours of fun.

Ireland

Romance is in the air on the Emerald Isle. The socially conscious couple may want to spend time in Dublin’s Temple Bar district where they’ll find the Amnesty International Fair Trade Shop among numerous other stores, restaurants, and art galleries. Vintage Tea Tours acquaint couples with Dublin on a double-decker bus tour while enjoying afternoon tea delicacies with 1950s jazz music. It doesn’t get much more romantic than touring Ireland’s Ancient East, land of Vikings, high kings, heroes, and castles. Adventurous couples will get their thrills from a last minute getaway to Ireland’s Atlantic Coast as they rock climb sea stacks, kayak off Renvyle Beach, or cycle the Wild Atlantic Way.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is probably the most interesting country in Europe, and is definitely the most diverse. In the Ardennes region, visitors will find a majority of the country’s castles. A last minute getaway to charming Vianden can include a tour of Vianden Castle and panoramic views of Our Valley. A quick visit to Remich means seeing the best of the Moselle wine region where couples can taste and learn about local wines. Luxembourg City is teeming with historic treasures including the Grand Ducal Palace and the Bock Casements. Wherever couples choose to land, they can be sure the local cuisine will be exquisite, since Luxembourg has a higher density of star rated restaurants than any country in the world.

Vermont

Vermont is a favorite year-round travel destination for couples planning a last minute getaway. Autumn is stunning with its displays of red, orange, and yellow leaves in late September or early October. In winter, couples can hit the ski slopes and take in the beautiful scenery together. Besides pleasant spring snow skiing, couples can also visit one of the many sugarhouses making maple syrup. Summer brings camping, fly fishing, and golfing, plus a plethora of festivals and celebrations. Those who thrive on arts and culture will get plenty of satisfaction in Vermont with an abundance of museums, galleries, sculpture parks, artisan shops, and even a sweet trip to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory. Places to Visit in VT

Holland

Holland is home to Vincent Van Gogh, one of Europe’s most famous artists. A last minute getaway to Amsterdam can include a trip to the Van Gogh Museum to see the world’s largest collection of his work, but visiting his home in the Brabant region can be equally fun. A trip to one of Holland’s famous wellness centers could be just what the doctor ordered for the harried couple. Flower and gardening enthusiasts can take their getaway to Lisse and the annual tulip festival in April. Cycling is a big pastime in Holland, and couples who enjoy the sport will find plenty of last minute tours like the Super Tulip Tour or the Windmills and Pastures Tour. Things to Do in Holland

Itching for a romantic weekend getaway? While we fully believe that there's no better anniversary gift than one that will help you make memories together (though we wouldn't say no to some nice jewelry ), you don't have to save your vacation for a special occasion. Sometimes a quick couples trip can be just what the doctor ordered. You can head to the Southern US or an all-inclusive in the Caribbean for sunny, beach-friendly weather, the Northeast or West for some mind clearing mountain air, or even European capitals to see the highlights.

The first step is deciding what kind of couples vacation you’re craving: Do you plan on hunkering down in the sheets all weekend? Are you ready to hit the pavement and explore a new city through its museums and restaurants? Or are you looking for a relaxing babymoon destination where you can dig into a juicy new nonfiction book and wiggle your toes in some warm, powder-soft sand? We've compiled some of our favorite locations around the world—from affordable locales to high-end resorts for celebrating milestones—all of which will ignite the romance. So pack your best swimsuit (or puffer jacket ), hop on Expedia (their new ChatGPT tool makes even last-minute planning super easy), or grab a Booking.com promo code , and read on to find out which trip is perfect for you…and yours.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic may be more well known for spring breaks than romantic weekend getaways, but that could be because you’ve never visited the eastern tip of the island, a paradise known as Cap Cana. Here you’ll find one of the Caribbean’s best marinas for fishing, miles of white-sand beaches for fun in the sun, and some of the country’s most glamorous and romantic hotels. Our pick in the area is Eden Roc Cap Cana , DR’s only Relais & Châteaux property that boasts a whopping 30,000 acres for true seclusion. Apart from elegant beachfront villa accommodations, there is also a brand-new spa and wellness program that includes many in-room services like couples massages and custom bath soaks. And those looking for the most unique romantic dinner should make sure to book a private meal at the boutique property’s on-site cenote, a limestone cave complete with a waterfall fountain. If you're looking for a more inexpensive option, Punta Cana has droves of lovely (and “affordable”) all-inclusives like The Majestic Elegance , which is on a stunning beach with crystal-clear water.

Save when you plan your couples getaway with these Booking.com promo codes .

Le Barthelemy

Courtesy of Le Barthelemy

The glamorous island in the French West Indies is known not only for its elegant hotels but its many peaceful white-sand beaches and romantic watering holes. We recommend a stay at Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa , a boutique oceanfront property that can arrange romantic excursions like a sunset cruise on a private yacht, custom couples massages in partnership with swank beauty line La Mer, and oversized suites complete with private plunge pools that call for a skinny dip.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Whether you've been with your SO for a few months and this is the first time you're traveling together or you're celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary, one of our favorite destinations for some serious fun is Nashville. The Music City has everything: bustling honky-tonks to blow off steam and boogie down (we're partial to the old-school vibes at Robert's Western World), incredible eats (we're still dreaming about the wood-fired edamame and Wagyu brisket at Noko and the slab bacon at Oak Steakhouse ), chic cocktail bars far from the main drag (we love Bastion ), and a vibrant arts scene. For a taste of all of the above, stay at The Bobby , where you'll have easy access to its concert series featuring local artists, a slick pool, and one of the most IG-worthy watering holes—its 1956 retrofitted Greyhound bus—and we're just talking about what's on the rooftop. The sleek boutique hotel, which just turned five, has a gallery, a sexy Garage Bar where you can leave your (literal) mark (the walls are adorned in neon graffiti), and some of the most comfortable beds in Tennessee. Though it's perfectly located steps from Printer's Alley and a quick walk from Broadway, you'll feel like you're in an oasis away from the fray if droves of bachelorette parties aren't your thing. And if you did spend most of your weekend mixing and mingling with the girls in the veils, the menu at Union Tavern offers plenty to help you soak up the whiskey. It's the type of eclectic place that'll make you feel like a rock star, which can be enough to shake up any couple's rut.

From the East Coast, you can fly to Puerto Rico in less time than most road trips, making it an appealing long-weekend destination during the winter months, but we love it in the summer too. Its capital, San Juan, is also one of our favorite cities for couples due to its mix of beautiful, historic buildings, and many charming, intimate restaurants. For an inexpensive hotel that is still suitably pampering for a romantic weekend, check in to the Condado Vanderbilt , located in the über-chic Condado district. The storied Spanish Revival property boasts amenities like pool and beach butlers, Puerto Rico’s only hammam, and two different oceanfront restaurants.

Antigua may not get as much attention as some other Lesser Antilles islands like St. Kitt’s or St. Lucia, but we think being a little more under the radar is what makes it one of the more romantic locales in the region. We’re huge fans of its gentle ocean breezes, peaceful white-sand beaches, and the vibrant coral reefs to explore by snorkel or scuba. And if you’re longing for a vacation during which you don’t have to plan a single thing, check out Curtain Bluff , an all-inclusive with—thankfully—delicious food and plenty of on-site bonding activities like snorkeling trips to Cades Reef or couples tennis lessons. And if your MO is simply to laze, your beach concierge can certainly help with that.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

About 168 miles north from Mexico City, the fairy-tale-like San Miguel de Allende is more than worth the three and a half-hour drive it takes to get there from the capital (or an hour and a half from the nearest airport in Léon, Guanajuato). The storied city, first established in the 16th century, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and makes for an idyllic long weekend escape. Chic overnight options abound in San Miguel de Allende, though, for a truly memorable experience that captures the historic charm, consider staying at Casa de Sierra de Nevada, a Belmond Hotel. Located in the heart of the city center, the property consists of six restored 17th- and 18th century Mexican mansions in a walkable cluster, each complete with vaulted archways, bougainvillea-shaded courtyards, and ornate, trickling fountains. Accommodations-wise, there are 23 suites and 14 rooms, each one uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and local artworks. The outdoor pool, ensconced in lush greenery, is certainly a highlight, but far from the only one. There’s plenty to love and enjoy when staying here, from the central location to the variety of food; the hotel is home to two restaurants (Andanza and Restaurante del Parque), plus the Sazón Cooking School and Tunki Rooftop by Handshake, a rooftop bar with arguably the best views and cocktails in town. (Stop by for a drink at sunset and thank us later.) Having a car in San Miguel de Allende isn’t needed, as nearly all the main attractions are walkable; the hotel is minutes away from the daily Market, the Parroquia church (a 17th-century gothic marvel), and the best churros in town at Chocolates y Churros San Agustín. A vibrant art scene thrives in San Miguel de Allende; La Fabricá la Aurora is a must-visit for discovering the local crafts.

If you're thinking of heading out west, it's well worth spending a few days in the Land of Enchantment. Fly into Albuquerque, then make your way north to Santa Fe, an hour and change drive to New Mexico's capital. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Santa Fe is a popular destination for creatives and adventurers of all stripes, with a big local arts scene, unique pueblo-style adobe architecture, and tons of skiing, hiking, and mountain biking available throughout the year. For a weekend trip, stay at the charming Bishop's Lodge , which is located just outside the downtown area in Tesuque. It's the perfect place to appreciate the rich cultural history of New Mexico and reconnect with nature. Spend the morning swimming, horseback riding, or hiking around the property, then arrange for a pueblo tour for after lunch, followed by a massage in the spa. Book dinner at Sky Fire, which specializes in wood-fired dishes with local, seasonal ingredients. For a day trip, make time to visit Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiú, which is open for private and public tours throughout the year.

Miami is an understandably popular destination: sunny skies, sexy cocktail bars, and plenty of beaches. But not every hotel screams romance when music from the rooftop bar is pounding until 2 a.m. That’s why we’re huge fans of Surfside, a more peaceful and elegant enclave due north of the debauchery of South Beach. And one of our favorite hotels there is one you’ve probably seen on Instagram: The Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club . A veritable oasis in the middle of the buzzing city, it boasts oceanfront rooms, some of Miami’s best restaurants, and a historic lobby bar that is as sultry as they come. They offer plenty of ways to pamper your significant other, including private poolside cabanas for some surreptitious canoodling, and personalized cocktails from the cocktail trolley at The Champagne Bar. Pro tip: You can even ask for a custom picnic basket to set up a romantic dinner on the beach. The Setai is another perfect place if you're there more to soak up the sun than the tequila. The entire property is dimly lit to exude all the calm energy, and that's nothing compared to visiting the five-star Valmont spa (get the Luminosity of Ice facial, trust us). There are also three different pools all set at different temperatures so you can swim year-round, and there's private beach access, too. As for dining, the Setai's options are unmatched. We're partial to Jaya which has a selection of Asian-fusion dishes and evening entertainment like fire dancers and contortionists.

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún might not be the first place you think of for a relaxing family vacation, but there's no reason why it can't be—and one of the best places to unwind in the Yucatan peninsula is the Garza Blanca Resort & Spa , one of the area's most modern and luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Set on a palm tree-studded beach, it features not one, not two, but six pools between the rooftop and the ground level that are perfect for entertaining couples, friend groups, and families with young kids. As an all-inclusive resort, food and drink is the star of the show: There are multiple Mexican cuisine options (including a taco food trunk on the beach), a Japanese restaurant, a steakhouse, and Chinese fusion up on the roof. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the suite—or in the Gourmet Hall, which turns into a massive buffet each morning. For a slow wakeup or night in, there's of course room service, which is handled here by a dedicated floor butler who's available round-the-clock. Since the word “spa” is in the resort's name, you'd be remiss not to book a spa appointment, which offers massages and facials, as well as a signature hydrotherapy circuit. (Pro tip: Book an evening session and watch the sunset as you alternate between dips in the cold plunge bath and the heated jacuzzi.) A four-night stay would be ideal to enjoy a little bit of everything the resort has to offer (hi, morning yoga), though we wouldn't blame you for wanting to extend your trip by a few more days.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Aruba, known as One Happy Island, is one of our favorite Caribbean vacation spots not only for its world-famous beaches but for its relative affordability. It has plenty of hotels for couples, like the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino , which is a popular spot for engagements (hint-hint). The hotel even employs a sunset concierge, who can suggest the perfect romantic spot for popping the big question. And if you’re already married? Fun fact: Aruba is also known as a vow-renewal destination and the hotel can set up a whole renewal package, which includes a couples massage and a 30-minute photo shoot during sunset. If your idea of romance is singing your heart out, the downtown happens to have a very fun piano bar . Or while away the day at Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort's private flamingo island, which is excellent for photo ops.

Puerto Vallarta

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s western coast, is fast becoming our favorite beach destination in the country. Not only are the shores of the Pacific Ocean spectacular, but many of the resorts in the area are comparatively inexpensive. One of the standout properties here is the Hilton Vallarta Riviera, which is perched between the Bahia de Banderas and the tropical forests near the Sierra Madre Mountains. And because every room here is outfitted with a private balcony, it’s a stellar hotel for a romantic escape. Or, for a hotel with history, stay at Casa Kimberly , the former home of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (you can also just stop by for a cocktail). Plus, the LGBTQ+-friendly downtown has an array of fun bars, restaurants, and cabarets (don't miss the Beyoncé impersonator ), as well as affordable places to stay. We love Pinnacle Suites which is relatively inexpensive, especially if you're traveling with another couple.

Courtesy of Hôtel de Crillon A Rosewood Hotel

Courtesy of Hôtel de Crillon A Rosewood Hotel

We couldn’t write a romantic travel guide without including the City of Love, right? While we probably don’t need to sell you on Paris, we’ll give you a quick primer: Everything is beautiful. From the winding streets of Le Marais to the stunning art collections at Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre to the quiet elegance of the Seine River, it’s hard to turn a corner here without feeling amorous. And if you’re celebrating a special anniversary or just looking for a bit of a splurge trip, Hôtel de Crillon is jaw-droppingly romantic. Located in an iconic and historic building in the heart of the city at Place de La Concorde, the property is one of Paris’s grandes dames for good reason. For couples, indulgence is the key word here, from the bespoke treatments at Sense, a Rosewood Spa, to intimate private dinners at La Cave, to enormous suites, some of which were designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Don’t miss a meal at the brand-new restaurant, Nonos et Comestibles par Paul Pairet, helmed by one of France’s most acclaimed chefs. There's also the new Hôtel Dame des Arts in the Left Bank that features a beautiful rooftop bars with views for days. Celebrating a milestone anniversary? Also consider the Cheval Blanc Paris , which is, in a word très magnifique thanks to its stunning panoramic views of the Seine.

Wailea, Maui

Courtesy of Hotel Wailea Relais amp Chateaux

Courtesy of Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux

You’re probably aware of the charms of the Hawaiian islands, and of Maui specifically, but we will direct you to our favorite part of the island: Wailea. With 1,500 acres of beaches and resorts and only 35 minutes from the Kahului Airport, it’s the idyllic spot for a romantic getaway. And no hotel in the area is better for couples than Hotel Wailea , an all-suite and—crucially—adults-only boutique property. For a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, book a meal in the hotel’s secluded treehouse, where couples can savor a seven-course meal while suspended among fragrant mango trees.

Mexico City

Courtesy of Ignacia Guest House

Mexico City is the most chameleon-like of cities, seemingly able to adapt to any sort of vacation, for any type of traveler. And with its charming, colorful streets, incredible yet inexpensive restaurants, plentiful mezcal, and temperate climate, it’s certainly top of mind for romantic weekend getaways. For a refuge that is both high-touch service but affordable, look into the charming Ignacia Guest House . With room for only 18 guests, it’s incredibly intimate, and it’s also filled with private terraces and fragrant gardens that can be the setting for clandestine kisses. Even better, it’s a proper bed-and-breakfast. Guests wake every morning to the smell of tortillas cooking on the griddle, and can sit down to a glass of orange juice freshly squeezed from the old-growth citrus trees on property.

New Orleans

Courtesy of International House Hotel

If romance to you means excellent food and drink, and live music, then consider New Orleans. One of our favorite boutique hotels is also one of the city’s most inexpensive. International House , located just a few blocks away from the French Quarter, is inside a beautiful Beaux Arts building that is also the city’s first boutique hotel. The hotel can arrange a private cocktail experience at its award-winning bar, loa, or even a private Vodou ceremony, which includes creating a lucky charm for the couple.

Santa Barbara

Courtesy of Mar Monte Hotel

While you can’t really say Prince Harry put Montecito and Santa Barbara on the map, we are finding ourselves more interested in the central California coast after he and Meghan Markle set up camp there a few years ago. Unfortunately, we can’t wrangle you a double date with the duo, but we can point you in the direction of one of Santa Barbara’s best hotels: Mar Monte . With three acres of Spanish-inspired grounds and a pool with oceanfront views, it’s the prime weekend getaway for romance. The hotel is also offering a special Mar Monte by Land and Sea package for the holiday, which includes a private flight, a three-hour wine tasting, and a private sunset charter on a yacht.

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Elegant London, with its beautiful architecture, plentiful parks, and bountiful cultural activities (hello, West End), is one of our favorite cities for a romantic escape. And our preferred spot for a couples vacation is The Mayfair Townhouse , an intimate and stylish hotel that's primely located. Besides the attentive staff, we love the hotel’s on-site watering hole, The Dandy Bar, which is a great way to end a busy day of sightseeing (or begin the start of your evening). Couples looking for the utmost privacy and space should ask for the The Garden Suite, which comes with its own conservatory and patio. Or book a stay at the newly renovated, Dorchester in Mayfair which has an especially sexy site for sipping, the Vesper bar , which plays homage to James Bond.

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

There are few places we’ve visited that are imbued with a sense of calm like Palmetto Bluff, a secluded enclave of 20,000 acres in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. And with plenty of scenic walking paths, a stellar golf course, and tons of Southern-inflected restaurants, you won’t be bored, either. The area is also home to one of the state’s swankiest resorts: Montage Palmetto Bluff. A quick drive from either Savannah (another great couples escape) or Hilton Head, it’s ideal for a romantic getaway; on-site Spa Montage even has a whole section of the menu dedicated to couples. There you can indulge in everything from massages to the intriguingly named Lovers Jubilee, which includes an exfoliation, a soak, and a massage. And while we wouldn’t blame you if you were loath to leave your bed (they’re  very comfortable), make sure you grab dinner at River House, the hotel’s delicious ode to Lowcountry cuisine.

Chances are, when you think of a romantic Caribbean destination, you’re picturing something in the Bahamas. Known for its crystal-clear ocean water, and 16 major islands offering a wealth of outdoor activities, it’s an excellent locale for a romantic vacation that involves equal doses of downtime and heart-pounding adventure. The islands are home to a wide range of properties, but if you’re looking to truly wow your sweetheart, make a beeline for The Ocean Club . Famed for its sprawling, white-sand beach, couples can opt for mega-sized rooms like Villa Residences or a bungalow complete with an infinity plunge pool.

New York City

Whether it's for the country’s top hotels, restaurants, theater productions, or museums, a romantic trip to New York City is the place to wow your significant other. And if you can snag a hotel room with a view of Central Park, there is hardly a more iconic way to spend your vacation. For the ultimate in classic New York hospitality, grab a room at the storied Ritz-Carlton New York , Central Park. After its recent renovation, one of the city’s most elegant (and centrally located) properties is once again welcoming guests for romantic sojourns.

Georgetown, Washington, DC

Courtesy of Rosewood DC

Washington, DC’s Georgetown neighborhood, with its charming townhouses, excellent shopping, and superb restaurants, is one of the most vibrant areas in the entire city. And with the recent opening of Rosewood Washington, DC , and its unique Townhouse collection, now is a great time for a romantic escape. Couples who book one of these oversized accommodations are treated to a vacation in essentially a private home with room service on speed dial. There will also be a special Rosewood Romance package for the holiday, which includes Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries on arrival. For a truly romantic outing, head to Martin's Tavern where JFK proposed to Jackie O.

Courtesy of Secret Bay

Known as the Caribbean’s “nature island,” Dominica may often be mistaken for its more famed neighbor, the Dominican Republic, but the names are really where the similarities end for these two islands. The unmatched beauty of Dominica’s landscape makes it one of the most soothing places to visit for a tropical vacation. And there is no hotel more romantic on the island than Secret Bay , whose all-villa room stock also makes it one of the most luxurious. Here couples can relax in their oversized bathtub for two or take a dip in their personal plunge pool followed by a relaxing hammock nap. And don’t look for menus at dinnertime: Your meals can be customized to your exact preferences. But if you’d rather not be bothered at all? Just stick the red flag outside your villa; the staff will make sure you get plenty of—ahem—alone time

Waikiki, Oahu

Courtesy of Wayfinder Waikiki

There may be nowhere more fun on Oahu than Waikiki. The south shore area of Honolulu is jam-packed with beautiful resorts, plenty of excellent shopping, and beautiful beaches with calm water. But finding a hotel in Waikiki that’s romantic, chic,  and inexpensive was pretty much impossible until the recent opening of the über-charming Wayfinder . Located right in the center of town, the midcentury modern boutique property has rooms at a very budget-friendly rate, along with poolside suites and quirky, colorful decor. Enjoy a romantic night on your room’s private lanai, or take advantage of the hotel’s location for a quick stroll on the nearby beach. Insider tip: The poolside speakeasy, Lost + Found, is opening soon for tasty, tropical-themed cocktails.

Hudson Valley, New York

Courtesy of Hudson Valley

Courtesy of Hudson Valley

We all know that the Hudson Valley is having a moment. And unlike some of the popular beach towns close to New York City, this bucolic area just a few hours north of the metropolis has plenty to offer year-round, from skiing in the winter to stunning hiking in the summer. But until this fall, it lacked a true destination-worthy property; the kind of place you splurge on for a special anniversary or romantic weekend away. That all changed with the opening of Wildflower Farms , a peaceful retreat set against the stunning backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge. The rooms here are all freestanding cabins, which makes them perfect for an intimate couples vacation, but there’s plenty to do on site as well, from sumptuous spa Thistle and steamy outdoor hot tubs to stellar farm-to-table cuisine from on-site restaurant Clay. Or, if you're looking for a more urban escape, shack up in an Airbnb in the town of Hudson, where restaurants, bars, and shopping will all be in walking distance.

This lush city in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is as perfect for couples who like to take in nature (the hiking trails are next-level) as it is for those who prefer to…après-hike. There are as many scenic trails as there are breweries; plus, it has a bustling arts scene. Stay at the historic Omni Park Grove Inn to enjoy sweeping views of the stunning nature Asheville has to offer, or downtown for easy access to all the bars and restaurants—it's a totally walking-friendly city! If your love language is sharing a microbrew, it also has more than 40 fantastic breweries featuring great craft beer, and many offer live music and enough giant pretzels to help you soak up those IPAs.

Ios, Greece

Calio Resort in Ios Greece

While if you're traveling directly from the U.S. to Greece, this destination wouldn't exactly work for a weekend, but we'd be remiss if we didn't include a property that was quite literally built on love in this round-up. For a more laid-back holiday, the Greek island of Ios is known for its stunning remote beaches and archaeological sites. While you can find a vibrant party scene (nothing says romance quite like sharing a few cocktails on the sand and dancing till dawn), there are also ample places to relax. Situated in a mostly untapped area in what was once a hippie haven in the ’70s, the luxury resort Calilo was created with sustainability and privacy in mind. It offers 30 suites that are mindfully designed with features like heart-shaped plunge pools (hey, we said it was romantic), swim-up bars, and sumptuous daybeds. Each element of the property is infused with the love and creativity of the owners. a couple who have been operating Calio since 2019. If you’re lucky enough to catch an encounter with the Greek matriarch of the family-owned property, you might even get some sage words of marital wisdom (“Our philosophy? Create a life you can fall in love with”). This June the tranquil retreat will debut a three-story spa and wellness center and three additional state-of-the-art suites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Iconic row of colorful historic houses downtown Charleston SC.

For a destination that exudes Southern charm, has year-round lovely weather, and is the perfect city to while away the afternoon walking hand in hand on its famously beautiful streets, consider Charleston, where you can almost always snag affordable flights if you're coming from the East Coast. Stay the The Vendue , which is conveniently located near the harbor and the most picturesque Rainbow Row (guests can grab a free bike to help them explore). The hotel also happens to have one of the best rooftops in town to kick your feet up and take in a sunset and views of Charleston's iconic architecture.

Best couples vacations

Napa Valley, CA

1.  Napa Valley, CA

Majestic, lush landscapes, glorious weather, fantastic dining and the country’s best wineries make Napa Valley not only one of the most romantic getaways in America, but the world over. Whether you’re looking for a scenic bike tour or just want to spend the day relaxing at a 5-star spa , this Northern California destination is perfect for anniversaries, honeymoons or just some couple-time.

Maui, HI

2.  Maui, HI

Of Hawaii’s islands, this one gets top billing for secluded beaches , scenic hikes and resorts that will make you and your partner forget the worries of the life you left on the mainland. At every turn, expect a combination of island escapades and cultural immersions , backed by famous rainbows and starry skies. You'll probably forget about all those other islands.

Hunter Mountain, NY

3.  Hunter Mountain, NY

Upstate New York has some of the best and most beautiful countryside on the eastern seaboard. The summers are sensational, the fall foliage is fantastic...and come the holiday season, it offers a winter wonderland of snow-coated shenanigans. The adjacent town of Hunter offers a warm, small-town feel and while it's far cry from any near by city, it reminds you of a time when you actually went to local stores to buy essentials and didn't order them through a website. A by-gone era indeed. The locals are quite used to visitors, strangers from 'out of town' and 'city folk' so they're friendly and extremely helpful. There are several great places to stay, but we believe the best is the Hunter Mountain Sanctuary , where you can enjoy a roaring open fire, a glass of wine and gaze back at the mountain, be it covered in lush, green vegetation or a smooth blanket of pure white snow. Here you can well and truly switch off...if you want to.

Aspen, CO

4.  Aspen, CO

Snow bunnies who love hitting the slopes for fresh powder in the morning and cuddling up by a raging fire in the evening will find all their winter wonderland dreams come true in Aspen. Couples love Gant Aspen’s luxurious condominiums. Each condo comes with a full kitchen for making romantic meals and a heated ourdoor pool. Located at the base of Aspen Mountain, daily skiing and leisure time in historic downtown Aspen are easily within grasp.

San Francisco, CA

5.  San Francisco, CA

Cable cars, colorful Victorian architecture and Californian cooking make San Francisco a terrific getaway. Traverse the famously hilly landscape for stunning views of the bay and skyline while taking delight in all the ways that the city’s charming history collides with its futuristic, tech-driven present. Dinner-and-a-movie is one of the most romantic dates in town at Foreign Cinema . At this swoon-worthy restaurant, doors open onto a courtyard where classic films are played outdoors under the stars. The elegant menu matches the ambiance.

Savannah, GA

6.  Savannah, GA

Horse-drawn carriages, Spanish moss, cobblestone streets and antebellum architecture make this coastal Georgia city one of the South’s most romantic destinations. Lounge on the sandy beach on Tybee Island , then pay a visit to the ruins of Wormsloe , Savannah’s oldest standing structure and the 18th century home of carpenter Noble Jones. A photo together on its oak-lined, moss-shrouded boulevard is the only souvenir you’ll need to bring home.

Cape Cod, MA

7.  Cape Cod, MA

The eastern peninsula of Massachusetts is one of the East Coast’s finest summer destinations. Harbors with darling lighthouses, chowder shacks, historic architecture, boats of all varieties, cranberry bogs, windswept beaches and small towns make for a relaxing trip enjoying each other’s company. Head into town for upscale seafood (with generous portions) at Impudent Oyster . Consider booking at Chatham Bars Inn Resort & Spa, which offers 25 acres of ocean-front property as well as amenities like a private beach and a heated oceanfront pool.

Woodstock, VT

8.  Woodstock, VT

Escape to an idyllic pastoral haven at this quintessential New England village. A fresh-off-the-fields farmers' market, a general store that dates back to the 1850s, town suppers and some of the most colorful, crisp fall foliage around make this tiny town (population just over 3,000) an off-the-beaten-track destination. For a breakfast or lunch that even locals swear by, grab a rustic table at Mon Vert Café . Here, the coffee is almost as good as the homemade baked goods and the sandwiches are savory delights.

Jackson Hole, WY

9.  Jackson Hole, WY

Whether you can’t get enough of skiing in the winter, want to hike across a beautiful Western landscape or are just looking for a nice place to stay and eat before you venture into Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole is for you. With an ultra-modern domed ceiling, romantic lighting, chic decor and a menu heavy on fresh fish, The Kitchen is a favorite date spot in Jackson. Seeking the rustic feel of a cabin but really need modern amenities and accommodations? Book a stay at Spring Creek Ranch , where you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of the mountains, in rooms with wood-burning fireplaces and cable television.

San Diego, CA

10.  San Diego, CA

Everyone has heard of San Diego, but not everyone has actually visited. And you should. It's a small city, relatively speaking for the USA, but it's all about location...and it doesn't get much better than this. Situated on the glorious Pacific coast, there are beaches a-plenty to chose from and the Old Town makes for a fun place to explore to find somewhere good to eat. America's finest city didn't just give itself that moniker and for a significantly slowed-down pace, Southern California's mini-metropolis is hard to top.

Tucson, AZ

11.  Tucson, AZ

Laid back and full of nature, Tucson is perfect for couples looking to take in a vast and iconic desert landscape, Southwest culture and art, scenic hiking and rest and relaxation in the warm, dry climate. To really take advantage of the amazing weather and enjoy the ultimate mix of relaxation and activities, stay at Westward Look Resort . Here, challenge your partner to a game of tennis, hit the trails on horseback, find peace at the amazing spa or take a refreshing dip in the saline pool.

New Orleans, LA

12.  New Orleans, LA

The Big Easy is particularly fantastic for lovebirds. Partners who can’t agree on what is most important on a vacation—sightseeing, excellent food , adventure or relaxation—will find their perfect compromise when indulging in live jazz music, river boat rides, strolls through the French Quarter, Cajun food and ghost tours. Splurge on a stay in the French Quarter at the splendid Audubon Cottages . The private, gorgeously decorated cottages come with plenty of amenities, including butler service, while the shared Tuscan-style courtyard boasts a fabulous salt pool.

Miami, FL

13.  Miami, FL

While many destinations in Florida are reputed tourist-heavy, there’s something to be said about Miami’s vibrant art scene. Worry not: Plenty of beaches and fantastic pools will satisfy your hunger for some tanning time. Ready to splurge on dinner ? Tropical plants, twinkling lights and so much romance , Komodo Miami is a sexy choice for enjoying high-end Asian fare.

Charleston, SC

14.  Charleston, SC

Founded in 1670, Charleston is as historic as it is gorgeous: streets lined with pastel antebellum architecture and an exquisite French quarter. Make sure to stop by the Battery Promenade for views of the Charleston harbor. While appreciating the oozing-with-charm downtown Charleston, stop at the Peninsula Grill . Located off Marketplace, this renowned eatery serves some of the finest elevated Southern food in town.

Nantucket, MA

15.  Nantucket, MA

This tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod positively drips in history. A favorite holiday location for many that could be considered US royalty, including the Kennedys and the Bidens. The island also played a significant role during the age where whaling was common:  Moby Dick begins here. And while that doesn't seem like a particularly pleasant period of history, you should remind yourself that at least it wasn't en masse , like it is today. Visit the Egan Maritime Institute & Museum for undoubtedly the best insight into the islands rich history. It also boasts the biggest single collection of work by celebrated marine artist Rodney Charman . The streets have that quaint, colonial feel to them and it truly feels like you've found tranquility. Enjoy the freshly-caught seafood and have a hearty laugh at the property prices.

New York City, NY

16.  New York City, NY

The Big Apple is not the quietest or most serene city in the world, but that might not be what you're looking for. If you're looking for adventure with your nearest and dearest, this is the place to come. From exploring Manhattan on foot or braving the subway to choosing from a near-infinite number of bars and restaurants that cater for every single conceivable taste. From sauntering through Central Park to strolling alongside the Hudson River. There is a ton of stuff to do here and let's face facts, with London and Paris taking the number two and three spots respectively, New York City is the most Christmassy place you can visit on the planet with only exception being Santa's actual grotto in the North Pole.

Los Angeles, CA

17.  Los Angeles, CA

The City of Angels is actually a sight to behold. It's as unique as every other major metropolitan city in the US and the palm trees, blue skies, wide open spaces and beautiful, endless sandy beaches, make it a fun place to check out. If you're a movie or TV buff, then so much the better, but...you don't have to be. Explore Santa Monica and Venice  where there are a lot of great restaurants and bars, plus shopping in Beverly Hills, walking in the hills, cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway or along Mulholland Drive or hike up to the Hollywood sign and gaze down upon the city lights below.

Plus, they'll greet you with chocolate-covered strawberries and a bottle of wine. At the hotel’s Roosevelt Baths & Spa (established in 1935 thanks to President Franklin Roosevelt’s act to preserve the Saratoga Springs), try a mineral bath with the area’s famed natural springs. Don’t skip town without a stroll in downtown Saratoga, whether you seek fresh pastries or new baubles to toast your time away together.

Forestville, California

Farmhouse Inn in Forestville, California

Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley is the perfect place to reignite the spark.

Especially when your stomping grounds are the Farmhouse Inn (from $950 per night, two-night minimum), a luxury hotel with a restaurant you may have a hard time prying yourself away from (think: chilled melon soup, seared Hokkaido scallops and kombu-cured hamachi) after your wine pairing dinner is through. Admittedly, you should try to snap out of your food coma and get excited to hit the road with their Pedal to Wellness package ($1,286 for two), which includes a guided bike tour with Dave’s Adventures in Bicycling. Then, a jaunt to Bricoleur Vineyards for a little vino and a yoga practice among the vineyards (not in that order) followed by a six-course wine and food pairing lunch highlighting fresh produce, edible flowers, and herbs from the vineyard’s gardens. To round out the day, enjoy a 60-minute couple’s massage at Farmhouse Inns Wellness Barn and wonder why you don’t just move to Sonoma County already.

Deciding to go on a romantic getaway with your sweetheart is easy, but picking a destination that's both romantic and affordable can be a challenge. That's why U.S. News considered prices for accommodations, attractions and dining to compile this list of the best cheap couples getaways. These top-notch destinations are both romantic and budget-friendly, offering plenty of affordable things to do and places to stay with your partner. Do these vacation spots spark romance for you? Let us know by voting below.

Cannon Beach

San miguel de allende, niagara falls, glacier national park, victoria & vancouver island, puerto rico, the finger lakes, asheville, nc, colorado springs, portland, me.

couple trip ideas

You came for the fascinating Mayan ruins, but you'll stay for the white sand beaches and spectacular swimming sinkholes, known as cenotes. Spend the day lounging on palm-lined Playa Paraíso, then cuddle up to your sweetheart at night in an affordable boutique hotel or luxurious glamping tent, many of which offer amenities like king-sized beds, bike rentals and Wi-Fi access. Plus, Tulum's restaurant scene offers budget-friendly fare in boho-chic settings. Couples heading to Tulum between May and November will enjoy fewer crowds and cheaper room rates, but keep in mind that these months are notorious for sweltering temperatures and frequent rain showers.

couple trip ideas

Savannah, Georgia, has no shortage of fanciful things to do. Couples can stroll beneath Spanish moss-laden trees at Forsyth Park, browse for souvenirs at the City Market or drive to nearby Tybee Island to relax on the beach – all for free. Lovebirds can also go on a spooky ghost tour to learn all about Savannah's history. When hunger strikes, skip River Street and opt for the various unsuspecting diners and counter-service shops dishing out authentic but cheap Southern eats. To save some cash on accommodations, find a hotel outside of the Historic District or consider a vacation rental.

couple trip ideas

Located about 80 miles northwest of Portland, Oregon, Cannon Beach ups the romance factor with breathtaking scenery, intimate restaurants and cozy bed-and-breakfasts. Couples can spend misty mornings exploring the quaint art galleries and shops in town, and beer enthusiasts can also visit several of Cannon Beach's breweries featured on the North Coast Craft Beer Trail. Plus, duos who love the outdoors will enjoy hiking nearby trails or strolling the wide sandy beaches, where they can spot tufted puffins on Haystack Rock or migrating gray whales every spring and winter.

couple trip ideas

With its pastel-hued facades, cobblestone streets and the tolling of bells from Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, San Miguel de Allende exudes magic at every corner. Though the plane tickets may not be cheap, once you arrive with your sweetheart you'll find inexpensive boutique hotels and affordable, authentic cuisine. Spend your days exploring art galleries, people-watching in lush parks and admiring the neo-Gothic architecture. And be sure to share a chocolate-dipped churro from San Agustín Chocolates and Churros in El Jardín, the city's main square. Skip the pricey (albeit beautifully curated) boutiques and shop at the bustling Mercado de Artesanías for handcrafted souvenirs.

couple trip ideas

Once referred to as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is a prime choice for adventurous twosomes who don't mind a bit of kitsch. Don ponchos and marvel at the falls aboard a Maid of the Mist boat tour , and don't miss coming back at night (on the Canadian side) to see them illuminated. Couples can also escape the crowds and test out the region's famous ice wine. Save some cash on your weekend getaway by staying on the less developed New York side of the falls.

couple trip ideas

While outdoorsy couples can hike the trails in Red Rock State Park, those looking for more peace and quiet can retreat to one of Sedona's wellness resorts for a couples massage or a soak in the hot tub, or kick up their feet on a scenic train ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad. When it comes to dining, snag a spot at an intimate restaurant that offers alfresco tables and excellent views. You'll likely want to visit in fall, winter or spring to avoid this Arizona destination's notorious summer heat, though winter will be the best option for cheap room rates.

couple trip ideas

Budget-conscious lovebirds who enjoy breathtaking landscapes, challenging hikes and waking up early for picture-perfect sunrises over the lake should put Glacier National Park at the top of their travel bucket list. Scenic spots to explore in this Montana national park include Lake McDonald, the Trail of the Cedars and Grinnell Glacier. Skip the hotel and opt for a tent instead to save big bucks and get the chance to watch for shooting stars. You can always stop in for a post-hike drink at some of the area's more iconic lodges to take in the views without the room rate.

couple trip ideas

One of Canada's more underrated spots, Vancouver Island is home to British Columbia's capital city of Victoria. Couples can explore Victoria's historical charm, blooming gardens and sprawling parks by day, indulge in high tea in the afternoon and then sit down for a romantic dinner at a farm-to-table restaurant by night. Those looking for a more remote getaway can venture to Tofino for its enchanting forests and prime whale watching opportunities. No matter where you're based, consider an intimate stay at a boutique hotel, an inn or a bed-and-breakfast to relax, reconnect.

couple trip ideas

Wine-loving duos who don't want to splurge on a Napa getaway should consider Sonoma. Often described as Napa's more relaxed, affordable sibling, Sonoma is chock-full of laid-back vineyards , secluded resorts and country inns. When couples need a break from sipping vino, they can head to Sonoma Coast State Park to trek through the trails that crisscross the park and admire the spectacular California scenery. Or, save some coin on dining by packing a picnic to enjoy at Lake Sonoma Recreation Area.

couple trip ideas

If you're craving a dreamy Caribbean retreat without the pricey airfare or the need for a passport, consider the island of Puerto Rico. This colorful destination is home to a smattering of beachfront resorts, but it also features stunning natural wonders like El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. The charmingly vibrant Old San Juan is perfect for relaxing dinners, street dancing and evening strolls with your sweetheart, or opt to stay in Rincón for its seclusion and postcard-worthy sunsets.

couple trip ideas

New York's Finger Lakes area is one of the top wine regions in the country, and it's an easy vacation spot to reach from much of the East Coast and parts of the Midwest. The fee for tastings at the wineries is often small in comparison to other regions. This scenic destination is also equal parts romantic and affordable thanks to its variety of cozy cabin rentals, waterfront dining venues and fun outdoor activities to do together year-round (think: hiking and biking in the warmer months and skiing in the winter).

couple trip ideas

Fall foliage along the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway transform this quaint North Carolina mountain town into a rustic retreat. You can save money by choosing a bed-and-breakfast instead of a luxury resort, and free activities abound, such as hiking or stargazing. Tickets don't come cheap for the city's top attraction, the Biltmore Estate, but you can get your money's worth with a full day of touring the ornate Biltmore House and weaving through the prolific gardens. What's more, Asheville's revered dining scene remains unfussy, so you're sure to find barbecue joints and taco shops that won't break the bank.

couple trip ideas

Sitting about 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs offers mountain town allure at a lower price point than its northern neighbor. The area's must-visit natural attraction, Garden of the Gods Park, is completely free to visit and offers hiking, biking and rock climbing. Once couples have worked up an appetite, they can tuck into hearty fare at more than 20 cozy craft breweries or other buzzworthy dining options . Then, dance the night away at one of the low-key live music venues the city has to offer.

couple trip ideas

When you and your significant other aren't exploring the charming cobblestone streets of Old Port, admiring the Victorian-era architecture in West End or perusing eclectic galleries in the Arts District, steal away to one of Portland, Maine's secluded beaches for a quiet shoreline stroll. If your heart isn't set on lobster, you can find affordable casual dining spots ranging from sandwich shops and diners to taquerias. For the cheapest rates, plan a winter visit and curl up by the fireplace in your shingled seaside cottage or inn.

Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum for a dose of art or catch the ballet at the Palacio de Bellas Artes . A gondola-like boat ride at Xochimilco makes for a perfect date. The best part is that the current exchange rate of U.S. dollars to pesos makes it possible for you to splurge on four-star hotels, like the mind-blowingly gorgeous Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico , for low costs. Use the extra cash for dinner at Limosneros , where diving into the Wagyu tacos is recommended. And of course, tequila and mezcal abound at some of the most charming cocktail lounges, including Casa Franca , where you’ll hear live jazz nightly.

And don’t sleep on the plant-based fare at Fox & Fig .

San Francisco

While hardly synonymous with budget, there’s no denying that San Francisco is one of the most beautiful (not to mention romantic) cities in America. Luckily, it is possible to enjoy a weekend in the City by the Bay without breaking the bank: Stay just over the bridge in Marin County at waterfront The Gables Inn Sausalito . With rooms from $190, it provides stunning city views and offers a romance package, including a dozen red roses and a bottle of sparkling wine. Take a cable car around the city, soak up the views from the Presidio (and rediscover your inner kid at its Walt Disney Family Museum ), snap a 'Gram in front of the famous Painted Ladies townhouses, learn about chocolate-making and share a sundae at Ghirardelli , and end up in Chinatown for dinner at so-called Eataly of Chinatown food hall China Live .

Use it as a jumping-off point to explore sights like opulent 19th-century townhouse Nathaniel Russell House , the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and its stained-glass windows, and the elegant Southern mansions in the landmark Historic District and overlooking The Battery (including Rainbow Row ). There’s also a robust military history, with Fort Sumter and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum , not to mention spooky ghost tours aplenty.

Niagara Falls

niagara sunrise

Make the trek up to New York’s iconic Niagara Falls and discover why the natural wonder was considered the honeymoon capital of the world. San Juan, Puerto Rico

old buildings and blue cobblestones in the streets of old san juan, puerto rico

The rich-in-history island has been slammed with natural disasters and—with tourism making up 10 percent of Puerto Rico’s GDP—is in need of tourism dollars as they continue rebuilding. As a result, San Juan could be an unexpected but wonderful couples’ escape. (Bonus: No passport necessary.) Check into the dreamy 18th-century boutique hotel The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan, with rates from $155 per night. Once settled, visit the 16th-century fort Viejo San Juan or 16th-century Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Take a peek at La Fortaleza, the walled compound where the governor lives, and don’t forget to visit San Juan Bautista cathedral, Puerto Rico’s oldest cathedral (and second oldest in the Americas.) Try Cafe El Punto for Puerto Rican and Creole food beloved by locals. While there, make sure to support local businesses, and consider volunteering with or donating to a group such as Para la Naturaleza .

Paso Robles, California

Charlottesville, virginia.

UVA Rotunda, Virginia

By Erin Gifford from Go Hike Virginia

For couples, there’s a lot to love about Charlottesville, Virginia, which sits tucked away in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Beautiful wineries, historic landmarks, public art spaces, hiking trails that boast spectacular views, and of course, the University of Virginia (UVA), await visitors in the Central Virginia town of Charlottesville.

Begin with Monticello, the historic residence of Thomas Jefferson , our third president. Tour the main house, then wander through manicured outdoor spaces, like the vegetable gardens, fish ponds, and flower gardens. An app-based scavenger hunt encourages couples to explore the property and snap photos. From here, sample whites and reds all along the Monticello Wine Trail.

The IX Art Park is a must while in Charlottesville. This walkable outdoor art park boasts vibrant murals and sculptures. An outdoor stage hosts concerts, performances, and music events. The art space is adjacent to Three Notch’d Craft Kitchen & Brewery , which makes a nice stop for lunch on the outdoor patio while in town.

RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE – 5 Days Shenandoah & West Virginia Camping Adventure with Rock Climbing

Hit the trails as a couple on numerous scenic Charlottesville hikes . From UVA, it’s an easy 30-minute drive to the trailhead for Humpback Rocks , which wows with 360-degree panoramas. This hike is especially spectacular for sunrise and sunset views. Alternatively, a 15-minute drive leads to Ivy Creek Natural Area, which has seven miles of easy hiking trails.

New York City, New York

New York City Skyline

By Lindsay from The Purposely Lost

New York City is an excellent destination on the East Coast for couples. There’s no better place than the City That Never Sleeps to spend a romantic getaway with your partner.

To enjoy the view of New York City from above, climb to the top of the Empire State Building , which has starred in classic romance films such as Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember. Then, spend the evening on a romantic Hudson River boat tour , where you’ll get to see the city glimmering at night.

Dinner and a Broadway performance is the most traditional romantic evening in New York City. One of the top tips for attending a Broadway show is to check out the eateries in Hell’s Kitchen, a New York City area that stretches from 34th Street to 59th Street, from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River.

There are so many fantastic restaurants in this neighborhood, and it’s only a short walk to the Theatre District, where all of New York City’s Broadway theaters are located.

If the weather is warm, grab takeout and have a picnic on one of Central Park’s numerous benches.

You can even spend the day strolling through Greenwich Village , dropping in at shops and small businesses before eating dinner on the patio of a café you walk by.

And if your hotel has a rooftop deck, like the Arlo NoMad , finish your evening with a drink and a gorgeous view.

Choosing a Dream Honeymoon Over a Lavish Wedding

With the cost of weddings on the rise, some couples are skipping big celebrations and prioritizing travel instead.

Two men wearing sunglasses are smiling, with blue waters and a row of colorful buildings in the background.

By Brianna Holt

In October 2023, Oscar Avilez Marquina and Luis Lopez, newlyweds from New York, flew to Europe to spend two weeks on a city-hopping tour between Nice, France; Paris; and Amsterdam. JetBlue had just launched direct flights to Paris from Kennedy International Airport, and the deal was too good for the couple to pass on.

“Going to Paris has always been a dream for me and for Luis as well,” said Mr. Avilez Marquina, 30, who is currently unemployed. “I’m so happy that the first time we got to visit, it was together because that’s going to become a core memory that we’re going to look back on for years to come.”

The decision to have a trans-Atlantic honeymoon is one the couple prioritized after eloping on Feb. 2, 2022, at the Durham Courthouse in Durham, N.C., with two friends as witnesses.

“We had talked about having a wedding and what that would look like,” Mr. Avilez Marquina said. “And after many discussions and sort of understanding the anxiety of having one, we decided to go to a courthouse and focus on what we really love to do, which is traveling and enjoying each other’s company.”

Ultimately, the cost of having a bigger wedding drove the couple away from the idea, with Mr. Lopez estimating a $60,000 budget for a larger party.

“That’s basically what my student loans cost,” said Mr. Lopez, 30, an accountant. “I had to ask myself, do I get married or do I pay my student loans? And is it worth spending that much money on something that’s only going to last a few hours?”

Instead, the couple combined their travel miles and spent a total of $2,000 on their honeymoon trip.

The average cost of a wedding in the United States last year was $35,000, according to the Knot . Also, the average student loan borrower in 2023 owed $37,338 in federal student loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative . With persistent inflation , paying for a lavish wedding celebration has become financially unattainable for some couples. However, many others have found that splurging on a dream honeymoon is more affordable and less stressful to plan than an extravagant wedding.

While thinking about a wedding to her college sweetheart, Haley Black, a full-time content creator, decided she didn’t want one. Her childhood fantasy was not a huge wedding. Instead, she dreamed of traveling and seeing other cultures.

So, in November 2022, Ms. Black, her husband, Mon’Darius Black, and their eight-person wedding party traveled from Shelby, N.C., to the Greek island of Santorini for a nine-day trip that included a small wedding ceremony with group activities followed by a honeymoon full of excursions and sightseeing.

“We didn’t want to spend a tremendous amount of money on a wedding. We looked at it like it was more about us rather than other people,” Ms. Black, 25, said. “Some people do see that as selfish, and while we had concerns about that, what mattered most is how we wanted to celebrate ourselves.”

When the couple first started considering wedding venues, the cheapest option they could find was $25,000. Flowers alone were $10,000. The total cost of their marriage and honeymoon trip was a little under $9,000. “We both have student loans, and we weren’t willing to go into more debt over a wedding to appease other people,” Ms. Black said.

Erika Hernandez, a wedding and elopement planner and the founder of the Greatest Adventure Wedding in Seattle, said that combining an elopement with a honeymoon was becoming increasingly popular because of its affordability.

“A lot of times, the couple just wants to include something that they really love doing together, like something they built their relationship off, and a lot of times that is traveling and adventuring together,” she said.

Couples choose honeymoons over weddings for more than just the savings. Many of Ms. Hernandez’s clients prioritize travel because they want to avoid the stress of preparing for a big event, are too busy with work and children, or prefer not to be the center of attention. “People rather spend the money on an experience for themselves than dinner for a whole bunch of people,” she added.

After Muna Yowell’s in-laws threw her and her now-husband, Dr. Jose J. Vargas Alvarado, an engagement party, the couple realized that they didn’t want a wedding.

Ms. Yowell, a 27-year-old data analyst, said the engagement party was largely about socializing with guests. On Oct. 7, the couple, who live in Dallas, married at a local courthouse and spent the evening with loved ones at a friend’s apartment.

Ms. Yowell, who is Palestinian, and her husband, who is Guatemalan, said they both did not feel right about holding a big celebration when the majority of her family lives in Palestine.

They spent only $100 on their courthouse ceremony, leaving room in the budget for a much larger honeymoon.

A week later, the couple flew to Hawaii for a week. “We went all out because we knew we could,” said Ms. Yowell, adding that the $5,000 trip involved renting a private sailboat, snorkeling, a helicopter tour across Maui and indulging in a fancy dinner every night of their stay.

“I’ve always heard that when it’s your wedding, you barely even get to eat the food that you paid thousands of dollars for,” Ms. Yowell said. “I didn’t want that. We wanted to be able to soak up the moment and really enjoy it with each other.”

Skipping the big wedding and going on a more budget-friendly getaway may have its drawbacks. Family members may be disappointed that they will miss the special day. However, Ms. Black decided that the advantages of saving money outweighed a few ruffled feathers.

“I don’t want to diminish the importance of family when it comes to celebrating big moments because I do love our families,” Ms. Black said, “but them witnessing us getting married is not worth us going into debt over a wedding.” The Blacks used the money they saved to close on a home in 2022 in Shelby, N.C.

Gavin Rossdale packed on the PDA in Mexico with his girlfriend, Xhoana X — who looks much like his ex-wife, Gwen Stefani.

According to photos obtained by Page Six, the couple got cozy together as they enjoyed their time in Cabo San Lucas on Friday.

Xhoana X — born Xhoana Xheneti — wrapped her arms around her beau from behind as he sat in a chair. She also gave him a kiss on the cheek while he smiled and looked at his phone.

The Bush frontman, 58, and the Albanian singer, 35, also spent time together on the beach, laying out on a deck chair and frolicking in the sand.

Xhoana X wore a teeny black bikini and distressed jean shorts. She held her blond locks back with a black headband and wore a bright red lip.

The dad of four and Xhoana X began dating in 2023.

In March 2024, they made their relationship Instagram-official when Rossdale posted a photo of himself and Xhoana X out to dinner.

The following month, the musicians made their red carpet debut at the iHeartRadio Music Awards.

“Fun night in hollywood for the @iheartradio awards!” Rossdale captioned an Instagram post from his night out. “Saw some good friends. Watched some Excellent Performances. Lots of good music. @justintimberlake !!! Go @greenday.”

Gwen Stefani.

Rossdale and Stefani, 54, were married from 2002 to 2016. They share three sons together: Kingston, 17, Zuma, 15, and Apollo, 10. The guitarist is also dad to daughter Daisy, 35, with ex Pearl Lowe.

Last summer, Rossdale admitted he and the “Hollaback Girl” singer “don’t really” co-parent while raising their children.

“I think you can go one of two ways. You can either do everything together and really co-parent and see how that goes, or you can just parent. And I think we just parent,” he said on the “Not So Hollywood” podcast in June 2023.

Stefani has since moved on to Blake Shelton, whom she married in 2021 .

Sun Valley is a year-round destination for adventurous couples, with horseback riding and fly fishing in summer, world-class skiing in winter, and a charming mountain town that's filled with art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques.

Illinois: 360 Chicago

Getty Images

There's no more awe-inspiring experience in Illinois than looking over the skyline of Chicago — and the best place to do it is at 360 Chicago , the 94th-floor observation deck in the former John Hancock Center. Unusual for such a popular tourist attraction, 360 comes with a swanky bar that's genuinely considered one of the city's best. Sip a drink here with your sweetie, and you'll feel on top of the world.

Indiana: The Kissing Bridges of Parke County

iStockphoto / Getty Images

Parke County, Indiana, calls itself the " Covered Bridge Capital of the World ," with 31 extant covered bridges and an annual festival dedicated to them. The structures not only lend the county an old-fashioned charm, but they come with a romance-ready reputation, too. Covered bridges were known as "kissing bridges" in their heyday, when their opaque wooden sides created perfect cover for couples looking to sneak a smooch on the road.

Iowa: Pikes Peak State Park

Panoramic Images / Getty Images

Though Iowa may have a reputation as flat farmland, the 500-foot bluffs of Pikes Peak State Park allow you to look over the Mississippi River and feel like you're standing on the edge of the world. While you're here, explore Bridal Veil Falls (an appropriate venue for engaged couples and newlyweds), archaeological treasures like Bear Mound, and the park's abundance of bike trails and campsites.

Kansas: Monument Rocks

Peeter Viisimaa / iStockphoto / Getty Images

For couples committed to the longevity of their love, Kansas's Monument Rocks will provide an awe-inspiring comparison point. The chalk monoliths sometimes called "a natural Stonehenge" were formed from the erosion of an ancient sea bed, and they've stood for 80 million years — just like you and your sweetie plan to do.

Kentucky: Cumberland Falls

Known as "The Niagara of the South." Cumberland Falls is impressive at all hours of the day, but it's particularly special at night thanks to a unique natural phenomenon called a moonbow. Couples who visit the falls at night can spot a fantastic lunar rainbow spread across the water, which only adds to the area's romantic charm.

Louisiana: New Orleans City Park

Matthew D. White / Getty Images

With its anything-goes atmosphere, dreamy architecture, and world-class food, New Orleans always makes for a great couple's trip. The city's most romantic destination, though, isn't its tourist core but the lesser-known City Park . Step off the beaten path here and get lost together among the park's rows of old oak trees and its picturesque stone bridge. The park is also home to the New Orleans Museum of Art and the New Orleans Botanical Garden , which offer even more opportunities for romantic strolls.

Maine: Isle au Haut

zrfphoto / iStockphoto / Getty Images

Couples who want to spend time with each other and only each other should plan an escape to one of Maine's most secluded islands. Isle au Haut has a total population of under 100 people and requires visitors to ferry over on a mailboat. About half the island consists of national park land, while the other half belongs to the community, complete with a few charming bed-and-breakfasts.

Maryland: Assateague Island National Seashore

Joesboy/Getty Images

If you’re looking for a little peace and privacy in a beautiful oceanfront setting, head to Assateague Island National Seashore , an NPS-managed barrier island park. The seashore, split between Maryland and Virginia, is home to wild horses that you can spot from a safe distance.

Massachusetts: Boston's Public Garden

Violet Smirnova/Travel + Leisure

In the heart of historic Boston , the Victorian-style Public Garden is the perfect place for a stroll, bike ride, or picnic. You'll see swans (both literal and in sculpted paddleboat form) and plenty of scenery at this destination, which was established in 1837 as the first public botanical garden in the U.S. To maximize the romantic vibes, book a stay at the Four Seasons Boston , which overlooks the park and was recently renovated with an earth-toned design scheme inspired by the garden itself.

Michigan: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Ed Reschke/Getty Images

Explore the great outdoors with your partner at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore . Located near the northern tip of Lake Michigan, this NPS-operated site offers outdoor activities such as snowshoeing and sledding in the winter and hiking and swimming during the summer.

Minnesota: Split Rock Lighthouse

MYDinga / Getty Images

The coastline along Lake Superior was once called "the most dangerous piece of water in the world" by novelist James Oliver Curwood — in 1905, one single storm along the rocky coast caused 29 shipwrecks. After that, Congress paid for a lighthouse and fog signal to be installed here, which came to be known as the Split Rock Lighthouse . The state park it's part of also offers visitors opportunities for cross-country skiing, beachside walks, and taking in impressive views of the lake.

Mississippi: Natchez Trace Parkway

Pgiam/Getty Images

This 444-mile road passes through Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, but you don’t have to traverse the entire parkway to enjoy its historic path. A short drive through part of the Mississippi section of the parkway makes for a perfect date. Plan your drive for the fall to enjoy beautiful foliage views.

Missouri: Ha Ha Tonka State Park

Ha Ha Tonka is one of Missouri's most fascinating state parks. Its centerpiece is the stone ruin of a blufftop castle that was built by a local businessman in 1905. He died the following year in one of the state's first automobile crashes, but left behind an impressive spot of land, complete with natural bridges, caves, and a scenic lake, for all to enjoy.

Montana: Lake McDonald

Jordan Siemens / Getty Images

Your love deserves a trip to Glacier National Park's Lake McDonald , where below the surface of the water, unique and vibrantly colored pebbles create a walkable mosaic. The lake's beautifully colored rocks were formed by glaciers, as were many of the impressive cliffs and waterfalls nearby.

Nebraska: Valentine National Wildlife Refuge

SharonDay / iStockphoto / Getty Images

Spend Valentine's Day (or any other romantically meaningful day) in Valentine, Nebraska, a town that loves to play up its lovey-dovey name. Besides the plethora of heart-shaped memorabilia you'll find throughout Valentine, there's also an impressive National Wildlife Refuge that spreads over 70,000 acres. Designated by the Audubon Society as an "Important Bird Area," it makes a perfect destination for outdoorsy couples.

Nevada: Tonopah

jeremyborkat / iStockphoto / Getty Images

Spend the night counting the stars together in one of the darkest spots in the country. The old-school Western town of Tonopah is located halfway between Reno and Las Vegas in a stretch of desert with almost no light pollution, making it a perfect place for stargazing. There are other quirky attractions here, too, like the Clown Motel , where horror enthusiasts can sleep among a collection of more than 3,000 pieces of creepy clown-themed art.

New Hampshire: Lincoln Ice Castles

AJ Mellor / Courtesy of Ice Castles

The Ice Castles , located near Lincoln, New Hampshire, have become known for the otherworldly glow they give off at night. The frozen structures — which look like something straight out of a certain Disney movie — are built from scratch each winter, and come springtime, they melt away. Visit in January for the best chance of enjoying these beauties in optimal wintry weather.

New Jersey: Passion Puddle

College sweethearts can spend their time at Rutgers' Passion Puddle, the site of legendary collegiate-romance lore. According to Rutgers tradition, anyone who walks around the pond three times with their lover will marry them — so be sure that your pond-side strolling is done with the right person.

New Mexico: Dwan Light Sanctuary

M L Pearson / Alamy

The Dwan Light Sanctuary in Las Vegas, New Mexico, will have guests seeing their partner in a whole new light. The space is equal parts art installation and scientific feat, consisting of an empty white space that fills with rainbows each day as the sun shines through 12 large prisms in the building's apses. The sanctuary was designed as "a refuge from the pace, conflicts, and anxieties of daily living" and is the perfect destination for couples looking to relax and reflect.

New York: Niagara Falls

Peter Unger / Lonely Planet Images / Getty Images

Niagara Falls has been known for more than 200 years as "the honeymoon capital of the world," thanks to its popularity among newly wedded travelers from all corners of society. Join in on the couple's-trip tradition on a visit with your partner, where you can marvel at Niagara's thundering waterfalls (there are technically three!) and enjoy the region's impressive array of wineries, B&Bs, and other attractions.

North Carolina: Highlands

As the setting for nearly all of Nicholas Sparks's novels, North Carolina is full of romantic spots. The dreamiest of all, though, is the town of Highlands , located near the Georgia and South Carolina borders. Boutique properties like Half-Mile Farm offer suites and cottages perfect for loved-up couples, while the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains are bursting with unforgettable views.

North Dakota: Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Dirk Anschutz / Getty Images

Couples who love wide open spaces can head to Theodore Roosevelt National Park , where the Great Plains meet the Badlands. Come nightfall, the park offers an impressive view of the stars — it's possible to spot the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, and even the Northern Lights in good conditions. During the daytime, make a stop to hike through the naturally colorful Painted Canyon or drive the Theodore Roosevelt Scenic Byway.

Ohio: Crystal Cave

RosaIreneBetancourt 8 / Alamy

Those planning on popping the question can do so here with the aid of a larger-than-life stone. Crystal Cave is not a cave in the traditional sense, but rather the interior of the world's largest geode, discovered in 1897 by workers who were building a well. Today, you can tour the inside of the geode — whose walls are lined with crystals as big as 18 inches in length — on a visit to Heineman's Winery . The winery, located on the Lake Erie island town of Put-in-Bay, has offered tours of the cave on their property for more than 100 years.

Oklahoma: Center of the Universe

Robert Heber / Shutterstock

The Center of the Universe in Tulsa is an audio oddity. For reasons that scientists don't entirely understand, those who stand on this point — marked by a worn, circular stone at the center of a pedestrian bridge downtown — can speak as loud as they want and not be heard by passersby standing even a few feet away. So go ahead and loudly proclaim your love instead of whispering sweet nothings. No one else will hear.

Oregon: Thor's Well

Gallo Images / Getty Images

Proclaim your love at one of the most epic landscapes on the West Coast. Thor's Well looks like a powerful sinkhole in the ocean — so much so that it's sometimes referred to as "the drainpipe of the Pacific." In actuality, the landmark is just an optical illusion, created where a 20-foot depression in the rock creates the appearance of a sinkhole. Still, the well here certainly seems bottomless — just like your love for your partner.

Pennsylvania: The Poconos

Like Niagara Falls, the Pocono Mountains have a long history as an American honeymoon icon. Newlywed couples have flocked to the region for centuries due to its stunning natural beauty, and, because of that couples' cottage industry, the mountains are packed with adults-only resorts. Stay at Cove Haven in Lakeville for a dose of kitschy, vintage romance — some rooms here have hot tubs in the shape of giant champagne coupes.

Rhode Island: Mohegan Bluffs

jphoto / Alamy

A stroll along Mohegan Bluffs is one of the most dramatic walks available in the Ocean State. The bluffs stand 200 feet above the beach below and, on a clear day, provide views straight across the Block Island Sound to Montauk, New York. After a stroll, check out the picturesque lighthouses that dot Block Island.

South Carolina: Pitt Street Bridge

Daniela Duncan / Getty

Located just a short drive from Charleston in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, this bridge-turned-park is the perfect place for a waterfront evening stroll among the palmetto trees. In this neck of the woods, it doesn't get more romantic than that.

South Dakota: Black Hills National Forest

BenjaminSullivan/Getty Images

Whether you’re looking for a scenic drive or a challenging hike, this national forest has something for every couple. The park also offers campgrounds if you want to stay overnight (and stargazing out in nature sounds pretty romantic, if you ask us).

Tennessee: Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Mint Images/Getty Images

If love keeps lifting you higher, head to the highest point in all of Tennessee. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome offers some of the best views in the Southeast, and it's a highlight of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Continue your outdoorsy date in this popular park with a waterfall hike or a scenic train ride .

Texas: San Antonio River Walk

Adam Jones/Getty Images

A stroll along the San Antonio River Walk is a romantic way to spend a day in this charming Texas city. Find a spot to eat dinner on the water or grab an ice cream cone and enjoy the sights on a nice day.

Utah: Delicate Arch

Love is powerful, but it can sometimes be delicate — and you can marvel at a similarly fragile treasure at Arches National Park . Although this geologic feature is now widely known as Delicate Arch , it's also been called many other colorful names, like "Cowboy's Chaps" and "Old Maid's Bloomers."

Vermont: Scenic Route 100 Byway

Prisma by Dukas/Getty Images

Take a leisurely drive down part (or all) of this 200-mile scenic byway, and be sure to stop in some of the charming small towns along the way, like Waterbury, Killington, and Stowe. Fall is the best season to make this trip, thanks to the famously vibrant Vermont fall foliage that's visible throughout the route.

Virginia: Natural Bridge

The dramatic arch of this landmark near Roanoke makes it a perennially popular spot for couples' photoshoots. The 215-foot-tall rock tunnel is the main event here, but Natural Bridge is more than just a geologic formation — it's also the name of the surrounding state park and the neighboring town, giving visitors here the chance to enjoy hiking, stargazing, and a stay at one of the area's charming B&Bs.

Washington: Ruston Way Waterfront

Getty Images/Wirestock

Couples looking for a walk with a view on the West Coast can head to Tacoma's Ruston Way Waterfront for (practically) every type of landscape they could hope to gaze upon. From the boardwalk, you can look out at the bay of Puget Sound, and if you turn around, it's possible to spot the peak of Mount Rainier rising over the city.

Washington, D.C.: Tidal Basin

SeanPavonePhoto / iStockphoto / Getty Images

For a romantic treat on your next trip to Washington, D.C. , rent a paddle boat and row out along the Tidal Basin for some of the best views of the Jefferson Memorial. Spring is the best time to visit, thanks to the stunning beauty of cherry blossom season , but this is a great destination at any time of year. When boat rentals stop for the winter, plan to take a walk around the basin instead of a paddle on it for equally impressive views.

West Virginia: Lindy Point

Couples who love the outdoors will find much to enjoy in West Virginia. The state is packed with romantic vistas, but arguably the best one can be found at Lindy Point in Blackwater Falls State Park . A short hike will get you to the Point, but if you want to add on more adventure, the rest of the park is worth exploring too, with scenic gorges and its namesake waterfall.

Wisconsin: Schoolhouse Beach

Deb Schense / Alamy

Couples can take a trip to Washington Island in Wisconsin's Door County for the ultimate Midwestern beach vacation. The entire county is packed with romantic charm, thanks to its quaint B&Bs and cozy, old-school restaurants, but Schoolhouse Beach is especially worth a visit. The beach consists of smooth white pebbles instead of sand, and its location near the easternmost point in Wisconsin will make you feel like you're on the edge of the world.

Wyoming: Grand Prismatic Spring

For the type of romance that can be described as "steamy," a trip to Yellowstone's Grand Prismatic Spring is more than appropriate. The largest hot spring in the United States is also one of the country's most striking. It can only be described as a rainbow of natural beauty — a line you can totally steal while on a date in the park.
