The Best Time to Visit Colorado for Good Weather, Affordable Prices, and Fewer Crowds

These are the best times to visit Colorado, whether you're looking to ski, hike, or admire wildflowers.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

best time to visit colorado in summer

Colorado is an outdoor lover’s paradise, with four national parks and plenty of beautiful mountain towns offering hiking, biking, and skiing opportunities. Some travelers come to hit the trails, while others visit to escape the heat and enjoy the views. No matter your travel style, the state has something for you — even if you're more interested in an urban weekend in Denver than an adventurous mountain vacation.

Whatever you want to do on your trip, you'll need to know the ideal times to do it. To jumpstart your planning, remember the main tourist seasons in the Centennial State:

  • High Seasons: June to September and mid-December to March
  • Low Seasons: April to May and October to mid-December

Keep reading to get a local’s rundown on the best times to visit Colorado, including the prime windows for avoiding crowds, spotting wildflowers, and skiing.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Smaller Crowds

Much of Colorado’s tourism revolves around the outdoors, so the state has two busy seasons: summer (when outdoor pursuits like hiking and biking are at their best) and winter (aka ski season ). In the breaks between these busy times — namely, April through May and October to mid-December — you’ll typically find fewer people. When compared with summer and winter, these off-seasons come with more availability at resorts and restaurants and less traffic on the notoriously crowded I-70 mountain corridor.

Keep in mind, though, that the busiest and least busy seasons can vary depending on what part of the state you're visiting. In Denver , for instance, the airport may be packed in the winter thanks to travelers headed west to the mountains, but the city itself should be uncrowded. January and February can be great months to plant yourself in the Mile High City and enjoy its many indoor delights, from world-class museums to recently Michelin-starred restaurants .

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Good Weather

Anyone who has spent enough time in Colorado knows that the weather can change quickly — and vary from year to year. Typically, however, the best weather can be found between May and October. During this warm-weather window , snowfall is unlikely (but not impossible) and the sun is almost always shining.

If you run hot, you may want to skip July and August, which are usually the warmest months, and plan a trip instead for the spring or fall. Just keep in mind that conditions vary depending on what part of the state you're in. The weather is always cooler in the mountains (and at higher elevations) when compared to Denver. So, while an October trip may be mild and sunny in the capital, it could be snowy in the mountains — and, conversely, a July visit could be scorching in the city but bearable in Breckenridge.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Lower Prices

To snag the best deals in Colorado , you can typically follow a simple formula: when crowds are smaller, the prices tend to be lower, too. If you’re traveling near a ski area, hotel rates will likely be at their peak during ski season and not much lower during the height of summer. Those same hotels, though, will often have lower rates in the early spring (April and May) and late fall to early winter (late October to mid-December).

If you don't want to confine yourself to the off-season, there are other ways to save. Staying in a lesser-known mountain town instead of renowned destinations like Aspen can help you find lower rates, as can using Frontier Airlines — Colorado's homegrown budget carrier — when it's time to fly in and out.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Wildflowers

Nailing down exact dates for wildflower season is almost impossible, since the arrival of the blooms depends on several factors — most notably snowmelt and elevation. That said, the flowers usually emerge at lower elevations in either late spring or early summer. At higher elevations, the season starts later, often in July or even August.

The great thing is that even though wildflower season is hard to predict, you can almost always find blooms somewhere between May and August — you just have to be willing to make the journey (or hike) to see them.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Skiing

Colorado’s ski season typically runs from late November through early April, but it varies greatly based on the area. Some ski spots, like Arapahoe Basin and Keystone , welcome visitors as early as late October and remain open through mid-June or even early July. It all depends on snowfall, elevation, and snowmaking.

That said, arguably the best time to ski in Colorado is January and February. The snow tends to be nice and deep (and still falling), and there's lots of off-mountain fun on offer, too, thanks to events like Aspen Gay Ski Week and the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival .

March is another great time for a ski trip , since it comes with less-frigid temperatures and (slightly) lower hotel prices than you'll find in the heart of winter.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Hiking

If you have the right equipment, you can trek many trails in Colorado year-round, but peak hiking season runs from June through October. During this window, most trails are snow-free and the majority of high-mountain passes are open. In the middle of summer (July and August), you’ll want to bring plenty of sun protection — but also some rain gear, since pop-up showers aren't uncommon.

Those who want to hike in May and early June will need to bring microspikes for traversing snow-covered trails, while those interested in trekking late into fall should pack layers and be prepared for the possibility of snow.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Fall Foliage

Like wildflower season, the best time to catch the state’s colorful fall foliage changes based on summer moisture and elevation. Trees at lower elevations tend to change later, while those high in the mountains will transform earlier — sometimes before fall has even technically begun. In general, though, fall colors reach their peak between mid-September and mid-October.

Your best bet is to visit a place with a high number of aspen trees, which boast beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds, and to plan on traveling up or down in elevation in order to find trees at the peak of change.

Worst Times to Visit Colorado

With so many attractions throughout the year, it's hard to call any time the "worst" for visiting Colorado. The seasons that may not work for you depend on your priorities.

For budget-conscious or crowd-averse travelers, the state's winter and summer high seasons probably aren't ideal. While they offer the best conditions for seasonal sports, these peak times will be pricey and busy. Visiting in the spring and fall can net you a gorgeous mountain getaway for a fraction of the cost and with a fraction of the crowds.

There are also the obvious weather considerations. Skiers and snowboarders should avoid the summer (unless heading to the extra-long-season resorts), while hikers and campers should skip the winter if they don't have specialized skills and equipment.

Basically, there are peak and off-peak times for every pursuit and every town — but, taken as a whole, the state of Colorado can offer you a great vacation any month of the year.

Summer Hull

There's no bad time to visit Colorado, but some times are better than others. The best time to visit for you will depend largely on what you want to do when you get there. Snow may be hard to come by at most elevations in August, and you're not likely to have great hiking and mountain biking weather in most parts of the state in January. But -- it also all depends.

At about 380 miles long and 280 miles wide, Colorado has multiple climates, so it's entirely possible to be in the middle of snowy conditions on the mountain, while folks are walking around Denver in shorts and a T-shirt. So unlike somewhere with a defined climate across the whole area, like say the Maldives , the best time to visit Colorado is a bit more nuanced based on where you are heading and what your priorities are while you're there.

When to find the best weather in Colorado

Most of the time, the "best weather" means going when it is most likely to be sunny and temperate. But in Colorado, where people go to chase powder, you're going to need to define "best weather" a bit more closely.

Best times to visit for skiing

If you're hoping for a great day skiing or boarding on the mountain, then your best months for snow will be the winter months. While there are some outliers in Colorado with longer ski seasons that run October to May (or longer), most ski mountain resorts are open from late-November to early-April, based on snow conditions. However, early and late season conditions can be very unpredictable in terms of snow totals and quality.

The average snowiest months in most parts of Colorado are February and March, while January is typically the coldest month based on historic averages. All things being equal, I'm a big fan of late-February Colorado skiing. By then, the snow totals should be good and temperatures are typically still safely below freezing, while usually being beyond the deepest bitter cold of winter.

Best times to visit for hiking and white water rafting

If you're after air that is warm by day, but crisp and cool by night, your best weather months in Colorado are mid-June through September, though know that early June and even late-September can still be potentially dicey in some higher elevations. But if you want to enjoy hiking and exploring Colorado and places like Rocky Mountain National Park on foot, summer is your best bet for optimal weather.

Those looking for Colorado white water rafting will also be best served in the summer, with the caveat that the most adrenaline-packed water usually comes in late spring and early summer as the snowmelt fills the rivers, while a more tranquil float is more often found later in the summer.

Rocky Mountain National Park (Photo by frank1crayon/Adobe Stock)

The transitional months of April, May and late-October can hold the most unpredictable weather in Colorado of the 12 months, so these are months you may want to avoid if you don't want the weather conditions to be a last-minute surprise.

When to travel to Colorado to avoid the crowds

Remember those transitional, or shoulder season, months I just mentioned as being a touch less desirable in terms of unpredictable weather? Well, forget that part if you're looking to avoid the crowds. Typically speaking, April and May and then October through mid-December will be your least crowded months in Colorado, as visitors often aim for the warmth and accessibility of summer or the powdery snow of winter.

But, you can get really lucky with phenomenal early or late season snow, if that's what you are secretly hoping for. In 2019, Steamboat Springs enjoyed 44 inches of snow on the middle of the mountain in October 2019, prompting the ski resort to start operations up earlier than originally planned.

On the flip side, a later arrival of fall can mean that the leaves are actually at their peak at some point in early to mi-October, saving the aspen's golden show for the lucky few traveling during a traditional shoulder season.

Cheapest dates to visit Colorado

The least expensive times for hotels in Colorado depends on where you're traveling.

For example, December is the cheapest hotel month on average in Denver, according to Kayak . This is likely due to a drop-off in business travel in December.

However, if you were to look at a ski town such as Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, Steamboat, etc., then December prices are some of the highest of the year -- especially during the second half of the month.

Again according to Kayak data , in Vail, the cheapest month for a hotel night is May, with an average of price of $142 per night, while the average cost of a night in December is $668 (making ski season precisely when you want to redeem those hotel points).

If you want to stay slopeside at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek , it will cost you 30,000 World of Hyatt points per night for a standard room, even when that room is selling for $1,000 per night during peak season. (Here's how to earn some Hyatt points of your very own.)

Out in Estes Park , which is adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park , the least expensive month for hotels is April, while the most expensive months are July and August.

The cheapest months to fly to Colorado, according to Kayak , are September, October and May.

The priciest months to fly to Colorado are in December, especially around the holidays, and March -- because of spring break travel. However, since Denver (DEN) has such a large presence of low-cost air carriers, you have more low-fare options available there than in many other destinations, regardless of when you decide to travel.

The average cost of a domestic round-trip ticket to Denver is about $50 below that national average across airports. (However, the smaller airports such as Aspen-Pitkin, Vail-Eagle, etc. are often much pricier if using cash.)

Seasonal events in Colorado

Summer events.

Summer is festival season across Colorado, which can temporarily dramatically impact rates and availability when something as major as the Telluride Film Festival is in town .

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

A sampling of other popular summer festivals and events in Colorado include Telluride Bluegrass Festival , Colorado Brewers Festival in Fort Collins, Blues and BBQ in Denver, Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo in Steamboat Springs.

The "Wildflower Capital of the World," Crested Butte, holds its annual wildflower festival in July . You're also sure to find a variety of farmers markets, fairs and rodeos across the state during the warm weather months.

Fall events

Fall brings with it not only the changing of the leaves in must-see spots like Maroon Bells near Aspen but also several autumnal-themed events, like Oktoberfest. There are a few Oktoberfest-type festivals around the state, but a popular one is Vail Oktoberfest , which is extra special as Vail itself has a very European look and feel.

In Denver, in the fall you'll also find the Great American Beer Festival.

A unique fall event in Colorado happens each September and October as the elk in the Estes Park area bugle and put on a show for each other (and we just get to watch). To go along with the natural annual "rut," there is also Elk Fest that takes place in Bond Park. Here you'll find everything from elk-inspired arts and crafts, to craft beer, bugling contests and Native American music, dancing and storytelling.

Winter events

Winter is the time for all things snow and ice in Colorado. In addition to getting lots of use out of annual ski passes such as Ikon, Epic and Mountain Collective across the state at ski resorts large and small, there are other winter happenings in Colorful Colorado.

If you want to take in the best of the best at X-Games, head to the Aspen area each winter. This year, the competitive winter sports event is slated for late-January. (Snag a room on points at the new W Aspen , if you can.) The last several winters, there's been an ice castle constructed in Dillon, Colorado , that is worth a visit.

Spring events

Spring brings with it the end-of-season events at the various ski mountains, which can be pretty entertaining if you like to see folks in fun costumes ski jump from the melting snow into the water!

But once the snow melts and the lifts stop running, the early season festivals begin to crop up. In Beaver Creek, you'll usually find the Blues, Brews & BBQ festival happening in May.

If mountain biking is more your speed, in May you can find the Fruita Fat Tire Festival out in western Colorado, which is home to some of the best mountain bike terrain in the state.

Bottom line

I hate to play favorites, but Colorado has to be one of the best destinations in the United States for those who love the great outdoors. From the wildflowers of summer to the powdery back bowls of winter, each season holds special adventures and events across the western state. The best time to visit Colorado will all depend on which adventure you want to embark on next.

Peak times for fall color vary each year and are also different depending on where you are in the state. Generally speaking, mid-September through mid-October will offer the best chances of seeing blazing fall colors in Colorado.

The highlight of fall leaf peeping in Colorado is seeing the Aspen trees turn a golden yellow color. These white-barked trees are found throughout North America, but one of the largest concentrations of them is in Colorado. The stark contrast between the yellow foliage and white bark set among the snow-capped mountains is a sight to behold.

When are the best times to visit Colorado?

February 2, 2024 By //  by  Patrick McGuire

Knowing when the best time to visit Colorado completely depends on what you’re hoping to see. A trip to see a special summer Red Rocks concert requires visiting during a different season than showing up for skiing or checking out the state’s impressive display of fall foliage, for example.

The peak times to visit are undoubtedly summer and winter . So if you’re looking to escape the crowds and find some solitude, or perhaps more affordable accommodations, consider spring or fall for the less popular seasons.

You may think that fall is a super busy time to see the colors, but due to the high-elevation nature of the Rockies, leaves usually start turning earlier in September than the official autumn equinox around the 3rd week of the month. Though you can usually find colors at the very beginning of fall as well. The least visited months are April and May, as well as October and November.

To help you pin down the best time for your visit, here’s an annual timeline featuring some of the state’s most popular sites, activities, and attractions:

Colorado January skiing

In January, winter recreation in the state hits its peak, so this is a perfect time for a trip if you’re planning on skiing, snowboarding , ice fishing, or sledding . This month typically brings a stellar array of winter events and festivals to the state, especially at Colorado’s ski resorts and mountain towns.

If you’re into playing or watching winter sports, Aspen’s Winter X Games is a can’t-miss competition featuring some of the world’s most talented skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers. January is typically Colorado’s coldest month, so keep this in mind and dress accordingly if you’re hoping to spend a lot of time outdoors during your visit.

Ice fishing on Blue Mesa Reservoir in February

Warmer than January on average but not my much, February is another ideal month for enjoying outdoor winter recreation in Colorado. But while skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and most other winter activities are in full swing during February, keep in mind that ice fishing season typically wraps up in Colorado in mid-February depending on the temperatures.

If you’re interested in scoping out the Mile High City’s food scene, Denver Restaurant Week takes place each February and offers an affordable way to try out hundreds of participating restaurants. Other notable Colorado events this month include the Lake City Ice Climbing Festival and the Steamboat Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs.

Frozen Dead Guy Days, CO

March is a month when snowy weather starts to subside in much of the U.S., but not Colorado. March is typically the state’s snowiest month, followed by April. This means that a spring break ski or snowboard trip is a fine way to spend some time off.  While this month usually brings a lot of snow , it also features higher temperatures that make getting out and about a little easier than during a month like January.

Celebrating St. Paddy’s Day in Denver or Boulder is always a blast, but there’s one event that happens in Colorado that you can’t experience anywhere else in the world: Frozen Dead Guy Days . This annual tradition celebrates a literal frozen dead guy with music, booze, and loads of bizarre games and contests. Check out other March events .

Colorado April skiing

Traditionally, April is the last month of the ski and snowboard season in Colorado, though at least one resort is known for staying open much later when conditions allow. Along with the temperatures, the fishing season also warms up in April and hits its peak in late spring. This month is a good time to explore the biggest cities like Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs, as well as the state’s high country.

April features terrific annual events like the Taste of Vail and special music festivals throughout the state. If you’re a flower fan, this is the best time of the year to visit the Denver Botanic Gardens where 10,000 tulip bulbs burst into bloom.

Fish Creek Falls in May, CO

With comfortable temperatures and everything in full bloom, May is an ideal time to visit Colorado for any reason. Fishing season is in full gear by this time, and the state’s mountains are a joy to experience in May. You might be surprised to learn that many locations in the state get pretty hot over the summer, but not during May. Waterfalls are also at their peak around this time of year due to raging rivers and Rocky Mountain snowmelt.

This is a time of year when you’ll be able to explore Loveland, Pueblo, and other cities along the Front Range comfortably, though you’ll still want to bring a jacket for chillier days, especially if you plan on visiting the mountains. Denver hosts some great festivals in May, including the Denver Arts Festival and the Cinco de Mayo Festival.

June hiking in Rotary Park, Fort Collins, CO

June is a glorious time to be in Colorado, with summer festivals in full swing and the weather in the mountains warming up for fishing trips, camping , rock climbing , and hiking . Towards the end of the month, the 14er season kicks off. In case you’re not familiar, 14ers are mountains that are 14,000 feet or higher, and the state has more than 50 of them to climb and conquer.

There are a ton of excellent festivals that are held in June, from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to the Greeley Stampede to A Taste of Colorado. If you’re looking for the most well-rounded Colorado experience you can get, planning a trip for June is not a bad way to go.

This is a great time to come to Colorado if you love music . In late July every year, South Broadway gets taken over by the Underground Music Showcase, a huge regional music festival that highlights local musical talent as well as burgeoning artists from around the world. There’s also the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, Bravo! in Vail, and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to these beloved music events, there are loads of terrific concerts at Red Rocks every night throughout the summer.

One annual happening not to miss if you love nature is the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, featuring 80 hikes, alpine yoga classes, 4×4 tours, garden tours, photography, art & cooking classes, and a whole lot more. By this time of year, all the stunning season byways and mountain passes are open, which unlocks access to the whole state.

It gets quite hot along the Front Range Urban Corridor in August, especially in cities like Pueblo and Colorado Springs, but the weather in the mountains this time of year is incredible. This is a terrific time to plan that backpacking trip or whitewater rafting excursion you’ve always wanted to go on.

Some of the world’s most talented dancers converge on Vail this month for the Vail Dance Festival, while other mountain communities like Keystone, Breckenridge, Idaho Springs, and Crested Buttes hold stellar festivals of their own. In the southern part of the state, you’ll find the Telluride Mushroom Festival, and Boulder holds the International Fringe Festival, which features wonderfully weird art showcased in a plethora of mediums.

Drumroll please: Ladies and gentlemen, mid-September marks the beginning of fall foliage season in Colorado’s high country. Though it varies from season to season, this is generally the time of the year you’ll visit to see aspen leaves exploding into vibrant bursts of gold, and the colors typically stick around up until a month.

Autumn is a gorgeous time to visit not only Colorado’s mountains  but the rest of the state as well. With bright warm days and cool crisp nights, September is a magical time to check out places like Trinidad, Golden, or Longmont. Notable festivals this month include the Colorado State Fair & Rodeo in Pueblo, the Telluride Blue & Brews Festival, and tons of Oktoberfest celebrations that are held in mountain towns across the state.

The stunning gold foliage display in the high country typically continues from early October through the middle of the month, depending on elevation. The highest points will be all but finished by early October, so just head down a little and plan accordingly.

Colorado celebrates fall and Halloween with corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and other spooky events like the Telluride Horror Show, a horror film festival. The nation’s largest and most influential beer gathering typically takes place early this month, which is Denver’s Great American Beer Festival. Sometimes it’s held in late September.

By this point in the year, the mountains begin to get cold and snowy, so something like a camping trip probably won’t be comfortable without the right gear and outdoor experience.

Most ski resorts open their slopes for business in the middle of November, a month that brings an array of cultural events to the state. From the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival to Denver Fashion Week to the Colorado Springs Record Show, November is a good time to take in arts and culture in Colorado .

In the higher parts of the state, opportunities for snowshoeing , cross country skiing , and snowmobiling open up depending on the weather.

With unforgettable winter train rides , mountain festivals like Vail Snow Days and Urll Fest, and festive holiday parades, Colorado goes all out to celebrate winter and the holiday season each December. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, check out the Holiday Chocolate Festival in Colorado Springs, or if you’re looking for an alternative to the typical holiday celebrations, consider warming things up with art, fire, and community at the Telluride Fire Festival.

Unless you plan on moving to Colorado , and many, many people do every year, there’s no way to see and do everything here in a week or even a month. This means that the best times to visit depend on what activities and sights are most important to you. Happy travels!

Discovering the Best Time to Visit Colorado: A Seasonal Guide

Colorado, with its diverse landscapes ranging from the arid plains to the majestic Rocky Mountains, offers a unique year-round destination for travelers. The best time to visit Colorado largely depends on the activities you’re interested in, whether it’s hiking through lush summer trails, witnessing the golden aspens of fall, enjoying the winter wonderland on the slopes, or exploring the awakening nature in spring. Understanding the Denver, Colorado average temperature and the weather in Colorado in October can help plan your trip perfectly. Let’s delve into the seasonal offerings of Colorado and find out how cold it gets in Denver, helping you decide when to pack your bags for the Centennial State.

Seasonal Highlights in Colorado

Spring (March to May): Spring is a time of transformation in Colorado, with snow melting in the lower elevations and wildflowers beginning to bloom. In the mountains, however, skiing can often continue into late spring, thanks to Colorado’s famous late-season snowfalls. This is a great time to visit for those looking for a mix of winter sports and milder weather activities without the peak season crowds.

Summer (June to August): Summer is arguably the most popular time to visit, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. The Denver Colorado average temperature in summer offers comfortable warmth, ideal for hiking, biking, and exploring the national parks. The days are long and sunny, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms that cool down the evenings. Summer festivals and events are in full swing, providing endless entertainment and cultural experiences.

Fall (September to October): Fall in Colorado is spectacular, with the aspen trees turning brilliant shades of gold and the weather remaining mild. Weather in Colorado in October is particularly delightful, with crisp mornings and comfortable daytime temperatures, making it perfect for hiking and enjoying the fall foliage. It’s also a less crowded time to visit, offering a more peaceful experience of the state’s natural beauty.

Winter (November to February): Colorado is a winter sports paradise, home to world-renowned ski resorts that offer some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the United States. The Denver Colorado average temperature in winter can be quite cold, especially in the mountains, providing excellent conditions for snow sports. Winter also brings holiday markets, festive lights, and a magical ambiance to Colorado towns and cities.

Many People Ask, How Cold Does It Get in Denver, Colorado?

Denver experiences a range of temperatures throughout the year, with winter months bringing colder weather. The average winter temperature can vary, but January is typically the coldest month, with average lows dipping to around 17°F (-8°C). It’s not uncommon for temperatures to drop below freezing, and snowfall is a regular occurrence, adding to the city’s winter charm. However, Denver is also known for its sunny winter days, and temperatures can sometimes rise to a comfortable range, even in the colder months.

Making the Most of Your Colorado Visit

Planning Your Trip: When planning your visit, consider what you most want to experience in Colorado. For snow sports, plan for a winter visit between December and March. If hiking, wildlife viewing, or experiencing the state’s natural beauty is your goal, summer and fall are ideal.

Packing Tips: Given Colorado’s varied climate, layering is key. Even in summer, mountain areas can be chilly in the morning and evening. In winter, ensure you have warm clothing, especially if you’re heading to the higher elevations.

Accommodations: Book well in advance if you’re visiting during peak seasons like summer and winter holidays. Fall and spring can offer more flexibility with bookings and often better rates.

Colorado’s appeal lies in its diverse seasons, each offering its own unique set of attractions and activities. Whether you’re drawn to the outdoor adventures of the summer, the serene beauty of fall, the snowy landscapes of winter, or the blossoming nature of spring, Colorado provides an unforgettable experience. Best Time to Visit Colorado – Complete Guide for All Seasons

Best Time to Visit Colorado – Complete Guide for All Seasons

Colorado is a state that has it all… Stunning nature, fun events in the city, quaint mountain towns, iconic fall colors, and amazing ski resorts set within the majestic Rocky Mountains.

With so many things to do and see throughout different times of the year, it can be hard to choose when to plan a trip to the centennial state.

The best time of year to visit Colorado is dependent on what you’re looking to do . Are you planning an epic road trip? Wanting to see the iconic views? Are you looking for a weekend trip to the buzzing city of Denver or want to escape to the mountains for a few days?

With over 300 days of sunshine in a year and an endless list of things to do around the state, you can’t go wrong. Use this guide of the Best Times to Visit Colorado to help you plan your next trip to colorful Colorado!

best time to visit colorado in summer

1. When to Visit for the Best Weather in Colorado

Though I’d argue that Colorado has pretty much the perfect climate year-round, there are a few times of year that have especially ideal weather.

For that perfect weather, plan your trip to Colorado sometime between June through September. Thanks to the high elevation and dry climate, it never gets too hot in the summer with days reaching highs of 80 or 90 but nights still cooling off to 50 or 60. Pack a few light layers and you’ll never be too hot or cold!

Summer months ( June through September ) are the perfect time to experience all that Colorado has to offer.

Head outdoors for a scenic hike in the Rocky Mountains or catch a show at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre for an unforgettable night. Visit the Great Sand Dunes, take a hike in the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs , or stay in one of the many quaint mountain towns and enjoy the sunshine, long days, and Colorado mountain air!

Because summer has the best weather, you’ll probably run into more crowds and traffic during this time of year . But with so much nature to explore and so many things to do during this time of year, it’s definitely worth it to come to Colorado during the summer!

2. Best Time to See Fall Colors in Colorado

Fall just might be my favorite time of year in Colorado. You can’t really understand the beauty of the fall colors in Colorado until you’re standing in a grove of glittering yellow aspen trees surrounded by the beauty . It’s truly stunning and definitely worth a visit to Colorado in the fall!

To experience the best of the fall colors, plan your visit between mid-September and mid-October . It changes from year to year depending on the weather, but typically the leaves start changing about the second week of September. By the end of September, you’ll find stunning fall foliage just about everywhere!

The prime time for fall colors in Colorado is the first two weeks of October . Depending on the weather, this is historically when most of the leaves are in full color.

The northern mountain and areas with higher elevation are on a slightly earlier schedule than the southern mountains, so take that into consideration when planning your trip to see the fall colors. By the end of October, most of the leaves will have fallen.

3. What Time to Visit Colorado to Avoid Crowds

If you want to experience Colorado without feeling overwhelmed by crowds, then I’d suggest avoiding planning a trip during peak travel times.

Summer becomes a busy time in Colorado with many families taking summer vacations here and visitors flocking toward the mountains for the beautiful hikes in great weather. This means that prices of hotels and rental homes can spike during the summer season.

To experience Colorado without crowds, come later in the fall ( October or November ) or early in the spring (March, April, or May ).

You may miss out on the fun summer and winter activities but will definitely get to experience the state without as many visitors. These months are perfect to take a weekend vacation in a Colorado mountain town to enjoy a slow, relaxing weekend.

Check out Breckenridge, Vail, Frisco, Boulder , or Estes Park for mountain towns to visit in the late fall or early spring.

4. When to Visit Colorado for Sking

With perfect ski weather for 5 months of the year and world-class ski resorts set within the Rocky Mountains, Colorado has become one of the most popular places in the U.S. for skiers to visit in the winter.

There are many high-quality ski resorts that are within a couple-hour drive from the airport, so whether you’re an experienced skier or a newbie wanting to try it out, Denver is the perfect place for your next ski trip.

To come out for ski season, you’ll want to visit between late November and late March . Most resorts open for the year by the third week in November and most will close around the beginning of April.

Come to Colorado anytime in between to enjoy some of the best skiing in the country. March is historically the snowiest month of the year in Colorado . For some powdery runs but not too frigid temps, hit the slopes in March!

PRO TIP: If you’re driving from the airport in Denver, the road to the mountains (I-70) will get very crowded on Friday and Sunday afternoons. If you can plan your trip to accommodate not being on the road during those times, you can save yourself from one major traffic headache!

Popular places to ski in Colorado:

  • Vail Ski Resort – a world-class ski resort, very popular but worth the hype!
  • Breckenridge Ski Resort – 180+ runs for all levels, close to a fun downtown area for those wanting to mix skiing & mountain town life
  • Loveland Ski Area – reasonably priced, 1-hour drive from Denver
  • Winter Park – many runs for various experience levels, 1-hour 20-minute drive from Denver

5. Best Time to Visit Colorado for Hiking

For the best hiking weather, plan a trip out to Colorado between late May and mid-October .

With over 300 days of sunshine per year and the stunning geology of Colorado, this is quite the place for hikers.

From half-day hikes just outside Denver to quaint mountain towns full of hiking trails, there are an unlimited number of hikes to take in Colorado and you’ll find hikes for all experience levels .

If you’re an experienced hiker, cross “hike a 14er” off your bucket list by choosing one of 58 mountains in Colorado with peaks higher than 14,000 feet! Alternatively, if you like a little learning with your hiking, try the Paint Mines Interpretive Park !

Due to the high elevation in the mountains, it can be a bit chilly and still snowy in the mountains in May. If your destination is high in altitude, June is the best month to begin outdoor hikes.

One of the very best places to hike in Colorado is Rocky Mountain National Park . Head there in the summer months for some of the most scenic hikes in the country!

Check out the app “ All Trails ” to find the most popular trails around you and read real people’s reviews of them!

6. When to Visit Colorado for City Events and Activities

If you’re wanting to experience Colorado for one or more of the many activities going on in the city, then plan a trip either in summer or during the holiday season . Though there are events happening throughout the year, summer and December are the times when you’ll find the most events happening throughout the city!

In the summer ( June through September ) you’ll find the cities of Colorado buzzing with farmer’s markets, outdoor dining, live music, craft pop-up shows, and community events. Enjoy the summer sunshine at one of the many activities going on during the summer months in Colorado.

From mid-November to late December , you’ll find cities around Colorado with a busy calendar full of holiday events! Plan a visit during this time to take in holiday light shows, buy Christmas gifts at one of the many holiday markets, or attend special community holiday events.

Check local calendars for your destination before you head out to make sure you don’t miss one of the many fun events happening in Colorado!

7. Cheapest Time to Visit Colorado for Budget Travelers

Are you traveling on a budget? Then visit Colorado between October and November or between January and March . During this time, there are fewer visitors coming to Colorado.

Fewer visitors in these months mean you’ll find cheaper accommodation, flights, and rental cars so you can save some money.

Don’t worry… Non-peak times don’t mean there’s nothing to do! Though there might not be quite as many events as in the summer months, Colorado still has plenty of outdoor activities as well as community events throughout the year.

There are amazing restaurants in Colorado where you can enjoy some good food as well as breweries and wineries to grab a drink!

To really travel on a budget, instead of planning to stay in the city, spend your time outside in nature ! From beautiful outdoor hikes to a free visit to Red Rocks Amphitheatre to enjoying one of the many public parks, there are many ways to enjoy time in Denver without spending a lot of money.

Last Updated on December 3, 2023 by foxintheforest

After living in Colorado for over 12 years, I’ve learned a thing or two about the best time to visit Colorado. Sure, we have wild, sometimes unpredictable weather, but we’ve also got an abundance of sunshine. So when is the best time of year to visit Colorado?

The answer really depends on what you’re looking to get out of your trip.

I’ve lived in Colorado for over 12 years. It’s my day job to travel the great Centennial State so I’ve been virtually everywhere in Colorado during all times of the year. I’m on a mission to have you travel like a local, not a tourist. So if you want honest, local advice about the best time to visit Colorado, keep reading.

When Should I Visit Colorado?

I get this question a lot from friends, family, and followers who are interested in traveling to Colorado. The short answer is, it depends. Thanks to the abundance of sunshine in Colorado, there’s really no bad time to visit, but you can certainly optimize the time of year to visit that best suits your Colorado itinerary.

First, what do you want to do in Colorado? If you’re interested in enjoying the outdoors, such as camping, hiking or exploring Colorado’s mountain towns , you’ll likely prefer the summery months (July through September). But if you’re out here for snow, February is your best bet.

If you want to visit Colorado without the crowds, then the best times to come to Colorado are April, May, October, and early November. The weather isn’t quite ideal for camping in the mountains and many of the trails may have snow, but there are still plenty of things to do in Colorado during the quieter months.

What is Peak Season in Colorado?

Colorado has two distinct tourism seasons, summer and fall. The busiest peak season in Colorado is from mid-June through August. Most people are on their summer vacations and top places to visit in Colorado such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Glenwood Springs are packed with tourists. This is also a popular time to head out on a Colorado road trip .

September is a very popular time for locals to travel to the mountains for the fall color displays.

Winter is the second busiest season. Starting around the Christmas and New Year holidays through spring break (mid-March) are popular times for skiers and snowboarders. Colorado’s best ski towns burst with activity during these times.

When Do the Wildflowers Bloom in Colorado?

Locals and tourists alike flock to the mountains during the summer months to experience the incredible wildflower blooms. In fact, going one of the magnificent wildflower hikes in Colorado is a must-do activity.

Blooms are directly affected by snowpack and rain. If the snow takes a while to melt – meaning there was a lot of snow over winter – the wildflowers will bloom later. Less snow usually leads to earlier blooms. And different species of wildflowers bloom at different times.

In general, the month of July is a great time to be in the mountains and experience the blooms. Typically mid to late July is a good bet for blooms at higher altitudes. It’s not uncommon to have plenty of patchy snow above the treeline (the highest elevation where trees grow) over the 4th of July holiday.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Colorado for Hiking

With majestic rocky and mind-blowing wildflowers, Colorado has some of the most scenic hiking trails . If you’re out here to hike, July and August are the best months. The hiking trails are mostly snow-free and the wildflowers put on a colorful display that can’t be missed.

Keep in mind this is also the most crowded time to visit Colorado, so don’t expect to find too much solitude in places such as Breckenridge , Aspen, Estes Park , and more.

When it comes to hiking in Colorado during the summer, take care to watch the weather. July is “monsoon” season, which typically means that there’s always a chance of brief, yet intense afternoon thunderstorms.

Getting caught above treeline during a storm is extremely dangerous, so keep tabs on the weather.

When is the Best Month to See Snow in Colorado?

With the onslaught of climate change, Colorado’s snowpack is getting more and more difficult to predict. Overall, the weather is trending towards later snow seasons.

The optimal time to visit Colorado to ski or snowboard is in mid to late February. You’ll have the best chance for a fresh coating of fluffy white snow, which is a powderhound’s dream.

March isn’t a bad option either since it’s Colorado’s snowiest month, but it also coincides with spring break (meaning hordes of people stuffing the ski resorts).

Pro Tip: For backcountry skiers and mountaineers, visit in May to June for the safest snowpack.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Colorado for Fall Colors

Fall is my favorite season in Colorado. The temperatures are cooler but still warm enough to camp, the thunderstorms have moved on, and the hills come alive with color.

One of the bucket-list things to do in Colorado is to see the mountains come alive with fall colors. Massive Aspen groves ignite the hillsides in glittering shades of yellow and orange.

Colorado fall colors peak depending on how much rain the mountains got over the summer, so the exact dates vary. Typically, the third weekend in September (Vail, Breckenridge, Aspen) through the first weekend in October (the San Juan Mountains, The Crestones, and Great Sand Dunes National Park) are the best times to leaf peep in Colorado.

Best time of year to visit colorado for fall colors

What is the Best Month to Visit Denver?

With a bustling arts scene, pro-small business attitude, and plenty of events make Denver a year-round destination. In the summer you can enjoy the rooftop dining and drinking scene, catch a show at Red Rocks, or head into the mountains for the day.

Fall marks the kick-off of the Great American Beer Festival, the largest beer fest in the Americas. While in Spring the city comes to life, with beautiful flowers and lush scenery.

Lastly, in winter, Denver is actually quite mild. Days tend to be warm, with highs in the upper 40s on average. Sometimes there may be wind or a cold snap with some snow, but compared to other wintery destinations, Denver keeps the cold at bay.

Colorado Weather

The weather in Colorado is generally dry and mild throughout the year. Oh, and plenty of awesome sunshine to go around. It’s never excessively hot or severely cold.

Summers are warm with thunderstorms in the afternoon. Don’t fret – thunderstorms typically only last around 30 minutes. The mountain temperatures are typically in the 70s while the 80s or 90s are common for areas like Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs.

Winters tend to be cold, dry, and windy in the mountains, with daily highs in the 20s and gusty winds along ridgetops. Denver and the Front Range are relatively mild with sunny skies but you should still dress up if you want to cut down a Christmas tree near Denver .

Fall and spring are unpredictable. Snowstorms and violent rain aren’t uncommon. Fall tends to be windy, while spring tends to be unpredictable and stormy. Temperatures vary wildly from summertime highs to winter lows (sometimes even in a day).

Overall, the best time to visit Colorado is anytime. There are things to do in Colorado year-round, making it the ideal getaway destination.

Generally, the best time to visit Colorado is during ski season in late January through mid-March. We’ll explain each of these times of year in greater depth later in this post, as each topic deserves a more detailed description of why it’s best to select specific months for certain purposes.

Colorado Seasons At a Glance

Colorado in January

Peak Ski Season: Ski season actually kicks off on Thanksgiving Day in November each year, but some resorts will have snow as early as October. Since the snow is at it’s newest this time of year, crowds don’t start packing in till late January when it’s more packed in. The whole ski season generally lasts from November to March with the best weather and great snow conditions occurring in February and early March.

The optimal weather for winter activities makes February and March a great time to go, especially with the bustling tourists bringing life to the ski towns, but the down side will be higher pricing on hotels and lodging. Snowstorms will blow in regularly in this time, but the weather is usually sunny with mild temperatures to make skiing more enjoyable for all.

Peak Vacation Season: Summer rivals Winter for the most popular time to visit Colorado. Families are more apt to travel this time of year with their children breaking from school. The biggest crowds come in July, but it will also be fairly busy on the front end in June and the back end in August.

The weather is at it’s hottest in August for most parts of the state and rainstorms are a regular occurrence. The warm weather allows for fun outdoor activities like hiking, as well as fishing, camping, climbing and mountain biking. Tourists take advantage of the warm weather this time of year by visiting the National Parks when the snow has completely faded, making excursions much easier for the whole family.

Slow Seasons: As expected, Spring and Fall tend to be the slowest seasons in Colorado, mainly due to the shifts in weather from the drastic chill of winter to the hottest days of summer. There aren’t a lot of tourists visiting in April and May or September and October, which have their pros and cons.

The down side to visiting in these months is that hotels and restaurants tend to close during their slowest periods and the weather can prevent certain outdoor activities, which Colorado is popular for. On the bright side, Colorado doesn’t have a lot of bad weather days, which can make an outdoor adventure in an historic small town much more enjoyable with lower rates.

The Best Season to Visit Colorado

best time to visit colorado in summer

Colorado is best known as a ski destination, with that perfect powdery snow that the state is known for. We highly suggest a trip in the winter months, especially in late February or early March when the snow is in absolutely perfect condition for skiing.

February is considered peak ski season, so crowds and pricing may be maxed out in this month, but you’ll understand why when you experience the weather on your trip. If you’re a ski guru or have a fondness for winter sports in general – like snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or even HeliSkiing – February is the best month for you.

If you’re more of a casual skier and would rather not be competing with crowds for the slopes, or perhaps you want to travel with your family, Spring Break time in March is the optimal time to go. Early weeks in March have the nice packed in snow topped with fresh powder for skiing with ease. If you go later in March, however, snowmelt may begin to occur at some ski resorts.

Colorado Month-by-Month

Now that you have the info on each season in Colorado, take a look at the breakdown for each month to help you determine which time of year is best for you. Each month in Colorado has slight changes from the other, so we covered these in short detail from month to month.

When is the best time to visit Colorado?

The last light of the setting sun hits Mount Sneffels, San Juan Mountains near Ridgway, Colorado.

The best time to visit Colorado depends on what you want to do. Weather-wise, mid to late spring (March to May) and early fall (September to October) offer great conditions for hiking and cycling. The crowds are also smaller in these shoulder months.

If you're into snowsports, then winter is of course the best time to visit. Colorado is home to some of the USA's top skiing and snowboarding destinations including Aspen, Boulder, Wolf Creek Ski Area and Steamboat Ski Resort.

We've compiled a seasonal guide to help you plan your trip.

Many of Colorado's trails in Denver, Colorado Springs and Pawnee National Grasslands are open all year. You should only tackle trails at higher elevations if you know how to navigate more severe conditions and have the right gear.

Late spring through early fall is undoubtedly the best time to go hiking in Colorado's national parks and valleys such as the  Rocky Mountains , Colorado National Monument and  Steamboat Springs . The weather is comfortable and dry, and daylight is plentiful. If you plan on hiking in the Colorado Desert, just note that summer is extremely hot, so perhaps consider going in the shoulder season to avoid the heat.

The best time of year for whitewater rafting is generally May through late August, but this may vary depending on the river. If you're rafting on the Arkansas River in Salida, you'll get the highest, most exhilarating rapids from the end of May until late June when the warm temperatures melt the snow at the top of the mountains. The rapids calm down by mid-August when the snow starts to fall again.

Colorado is home to some of the USA's top skiing and snowboarding destinations including Aspen, Boulder, Wolf Creek Ski Area and Steamboat Ski Resort. Not only can you enjoy perfect powder snow for hitting the slopes, but the winter scenery and views from the top of the mountains are incredible.

December and January are usually the best time for soft, fluffy snow, but you'll have to share the slopes with more people. And it's also really cold!

If you want to beat the crowds, enjoy the snow and would prefer slightly warmer temperatures, late February through March is your best bet.

If you love music, food, art and culture, summer in Colorado is calling your name. The festival calendar is jam-packed with events from open-air music concerts and wine festivals, to dragon boat races and wildflower festivals.

There are plenty of events scattered throughout the other seasons, but nothing beats sitting outside on a balmy summer's evening and enjoying the festivities.

Colorado is a huge state and the climate varies greatly depending on where you are. There’s a bit of everything, from continental to tundra to humid-subtropical. One of our favorite things about Colorado is the sunshine, with an average of 300 days per year.

Generally, the weather is cooler in the mountains and valleys, and it can get quite chilly in the evenings and early mornings even in the summer. A large variance between day and night temperatures is common throughout the year, so make sure you pack clothing that you can layer up or down.

Winter is very cold with average temperatures ranging between 15 and 54°F. However, in places like the Eastern Plains, it’s often much colder and temperatures can drop as low as -10°F.

Colorado also receives about 70 inches of annual snowfall, but in mountainous areas it's much higher with a whopping 200-400 inches per year.

Spring is an awesome time to visit. Daytime highs average a pleasant 50°F to 60°F. Towards the end of the season when the snow starts to melt, nature quite literally springs back to life and wildflowers add bright pops of colour to hiking trails in the valleys and mountains. Late spring is also a great time to go chasin' waterfalls or go white water rafting thanks to snowmelt from the high country.

Summer is hot and dry in many parts of the state, with average highs hovering between 90°F and 100°F. The hot weather creates prime conditions for hurricanes, thunderstorms and wildfires, but it also draws in big crowds who want to enjoy reliably sunny weather on their summer vacations. Places like Denver and Colorado Springs are particularly busy, especially when the summer festival season kicks off.

Colorado's nature game is strong, so you can imagine the spectacular colors and scenery that emerge once fall arrives. The mountain trails turn into a photographer's paradise with bright yellow, orange and red foliage thanks to the many groves of Aspen trees dotted around the state.

16 Best Things to Do in Colorado in Summer

 Getty Images / Brian Bailey

For most family travelers, Colorado means Rocky Mountain ski resorts . Denverites and other Coloradans, however, know how much fun awaits in the summer months, and flock to the Roaring Fork Valley and other destinations for river and mountain experiences.

To join in, fly into Denver, rent a car, and you too can enjoy a bonanza of white water rafting, river kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and zip lining, among other memorable activities throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, which includes Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, Mount Sopris, and the Roaring Fork River, a tributary of the mighty Colorado River. It's also possible to enjoy an affordable Aspen getaway, find family-friendly farm-to-table eateries, and get in on a cool Colorado trend—free river parks where surfing waves have been engineered. Here's how to make the most of your time here in summer.

Cheer at the Snowmass Rodeo

Snowmass Rodeo

Each Wednesday night from late-June to late-August, the Snowmass Rodeo entertains with free family-friendly activities from 5 p.m. including roping lessons and a petting zoo, mechanical bull rides (for older kids), and cowboy-themed food (pulled pork, burgers, baked beans, and coleslaw), before the real rodeo action starts at 7 p.m. Shuttles are available to the rodeo grounds from most Snowmass hotels and resorts.

Come to see the area's best cowboys and cowgirls show off their bareback riding, team roping, saddle bronc riding, ribbon roping, barrel racing, and bull riding skills. Little ones can also sign up to try the calf scramble (kids must pick the ribbon off the calf's tail) and mutton busting (think bull riding, but with sheep) for their own eight seconds of rodeo glory.

Hit the Links

Breckenridge Golf Club

There's no shortage of scenic golf courses in Colorado, so hit the links and enjoy all those beautiful mountain views—thanks to the altitude, the air is thinner up here, too, so your ball will go farther than it does at home.

Take on Jack Nicklaus Signature courses like the Bear, Beaver, and Elk at Breckenridge Golf Club , golf among otherworldly rock formations at Arrowhead Golf Course , spot triceratops footprints by the 12th hole at Fossil Trace Golf Club , or play a round at the highest-altitude golf course in North America at Mount Massive Golf Course . Either way, it's sure to be a memorable time.

Go Horseback Riding in the Mountains

National Park Gateway Stables

For an experience that'll bring you back into nature (and sort of make you feel like you're in the Old West for a while), try horseback riding. SK Horses , located in Estes Park, offers guided scenic trail rides for horse lovers of all ages through Rocky Mountain National Park from the National Park Gateway Stables.

Kids ages 2 through 7 can enjoy shorter 10–30 minute pony rides, while older children and adults can choose between two-, three-, four, five, six-, seven, and eight-hour rides through the national park (prices vary). There's also an option for a two-hour dinnertime ride that includes a 25% discount for dinner at the Trailhead Restaurant to use after your ride.

Take a Ride on a Scenic Train

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Train enthusiasts, rejoice! Colorado is home to some of the best scenic train rides in the country, whether you're into the historical background of the route, the actual locomotives, or are just in it for the views. Keep an eye out for wildflowers, aspen and evergreen forests, gorgeous gorges, elk, deer, antelope, eagles, bears, foxes, and other Colorado wildlife as you go.

Popular scenic train rides include the Cumbres & Toltec , a 64-mile steam train and moving national historic landmark for rides through Rocky Mountain West; the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad , which takes guests on a 9.5-hour round-trip journey (including a two-hour stop in Silverton) through Horseshoe Curve, High Bridge, the High Line, and Animas River Gorge—a shorter 5.25-hour ride called the Cascade Canyon Express is great, too, if you're short on time or attention spans; and the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad , offering 2.5-hour rides through the Rockies.

Soak in the Hot Springs at Avalanche Ranch

Avalanche Ranch Cabins & Antiques

Outside Carbondale near the Redstone Historic District, visitors may see signs beside the road calling attention to nearby hot springs, and should know that clothing at such places may be optional. Families may prefer to visit the Avalanche Ranch , a picture-perfect rustic bed and breakfast that has built an attractive pool area around natural hot springs. It's a friendly, family-run establishment with several options for overnight lodging should you wish to stay longer—otherwise, day passes are available.

Spend Some Time in Historic Carbondale

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Carbondale is a good spot to use as a home base for any day trip or outdoor recreation activities in the Roaring Fork Valley area—it's a nice small-town size and home to many historic buildings, galleries, eclectic gift shops, and excellent restaurants. Outdoorsy types can also take advantage of hiking, biking, camping, climbing, fishing, golf, hunting, horseback riding, and mountaineering activities nearby.

A family favorite for breakfast and lunch is the patio at the Village Smithy Restaurant . Don't miss the mile-high pies, which are always a big hit at breakfast. Carbondale also has a number of bed and breakfasts, while best bets for families are likely the Comfort Inn & Suites or the Days Inn, which also offers suites.

Give Whitewater Rafting a Try

joshschutz / Getty Images

Whitewater rafting is an exciting activity for adults as well as teens—even kids as young as six can usually get in on the action. Most companies will offer a range of experiences, from easy floats to challenging rapids. Typically, guests team up in multi-person inflatable rafts with at least one guide per raft. Every crew member is expected to paddle as the guide instructs, and paddling is a big part of the fun. Blazing Adventures is one of several companies out of Aspen that offer half-day trips on the lower, middle, or upper Roaring Fork River.

Another cool Colorado trend: Several towns have engineered artificial waves on their rivers and created public river parks where locals and visitors can enjoy the whitewater. These artificial waves stay constant in their position on the river and are a popular place for water sports normally found at the beach, like surfing or stand up paddle boarding.

Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park is the first man-made feature on the Colorado River and is a fun place for boogie boarding, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and kayaking. Because the standing "G-Wave" created here is constant, it's a great place to learn to surf since beginners don't need to exhaust themselves by paddling out to catch a wave. At calmer times of the year, even the little ones can enjoy boogie boarding in the man-made wave at this free river park.

Take a Crack at River Kayaking

TripSavvy / Teresa Plowright

River kayaks are sporty and fun—smaller, lighter, and rudderless compared to sea kayaks—and they turn on a dime. Taking a lesson or two in Colorado is an opportunity to try something new, and makes a great way to experience the mountain scenery.

Aspen Kayak & SUP offers half-day, full day, and multi-day lessons on the Roaring Fork River and Colorado River, as well as multi-day expeditions. Beginners will start on flat-water lakes or in a Class 1 beginner zone located in the Northstar Nature Preserve. No experience is necessary to take a lesson, which includes instruction in calm water and a chance to try out your new skills. Ages 12 and up can participate, though the ability to swim is a prerequisite.

Do Some Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Aspen Kayak Academy

From Oahu to Florida, the trendy new thing to try on a family vacation these days is Stand Up Paddleboarding , or SUP. Many people try this new water sport at the beach, but in Colorado, families can take lessons in a river setting with the Aspen Kayak & SUP .

Those who do an SUP class here can take pride in knowing that instructor Charlie MacArthur pioneered the sport in Colorado; there's even an SUP river board named after him. Kids ages 12 and up can give it a shot, as long as they already know how to swim. If you're looking for something different and cool to do with a teen, this could be it.

Zip Line Across the Colorado River

Another way to experience the mights rivers of Colorado: Ride a zip line 350 feet across it with Glenwood Canyon Zip Line Adventures . All you need is the nerve to step off the platform, and kids are welcome as long as they're at least 48 inches tall and accompanied by a participating adult. Glenwood Canyon Zip Line Adventures also offers a ropes course, dining overlooking the river, rafting outings, and cabins for rent.

Take On the Giant Canyon Swing

Teresa Plowright.

Visiting families to Glenwood Springs—located between Aspen and Vail about a 2.5-hour drive from Denver—will want to include Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in their itineraries. Enjoy a full day of fun, starting with a 10-minute scenic gondola ride on the Iron Mountain Tramway. Attractions here include an alpine coaster, a 4D Ride Theatre, bungee jumping, a zip line, a climbing wall, and the seriously scary Giant Canyon Swing, pictured above, which swings out 1,300 feet above the Colorado River.

Ride the Alpine Coaster at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park

This mountain coaster is a great ride for ages three and up at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park . You'll race 3,400 feet down the mountainside, and each car has brakes so riders can control their speed. Kids must be 8 years old and taller than 56" to ride the coaster alone, while younger children can ride with an adult as long as the child is at least three years old.

Tour Glenwood Caverns and the Historic Fairy Caves

TripSavvy / Norm Thompson

This huge cave system was the original attraction that drew visitors to the top of Iron Mountain in Glenwood Springs over a century ago. Nowadays, the caves are part of the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park . Visitors should make time to go on a cave tour , which is the only way to venture into the tunnels of this impressive underground world.

Parts of the caverns were open to the public as far back as 1895. Victorian-era travelers visiting Glenwood's hot springs dressed up in their finest for a day outing to the Fairy Caves, ascending the mountain on horses, burros, or in horse-drawn carriages.

The caves, however, closed during World War I and stayed closed until 1999 when new owners took over. Today the 800-foot area of the historic Fairy Caves is part of Glenwood Caverns, which has 16,000 known feet.

Unwind at the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool

Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association

Long before the era of the family car trips that bring most people to Glenwood Springs today, travelers came by train to soak in the town's famous mineral-rich hot springs.

Back in the 1880's, therapeutic bathing in mineral spas was a popular practice, and by 1888, the town of Glenwood Springs had the world’s largest hot springs pool —its long stretch can be seen behind the waterslide in the photo above. Presidents, aristocrats, and celebrities were among the many guests who came to soak in the pool and stay in the deluxe Hotel Colorado . The poolside red sandstone bathhouse and lodge offered top amenities of the day, such as a ladies' parlor and Roman vapor baths.

Today the pool has a wading pool for kids and a giant water slide. The large pool is open year-round, with a constant temperature of 90°-93° F. A smaller therapy pool averages about 104° F. Three-and-a-half million gallons of hot mineral water rise daily from the spring.

Get Active in the Roaring Fork Valley

TripSavvy / Jeremy Swanson

Visitors to the Roaring Fork Valley in summer should take a hike in the stupendous mountain scenery. Hiking here can be as easy as an hour's jaunt on a trail that departs from Snowmass Village and leads to stunning views—and vistas of alpine flowers, if the timing's right. Cycling can be as challenging as any adventurer could wish; local skiers and boarders turn into mountain bikers or racers during the summer months, though lesser mortals have options, too.

The 42-mile Rio Grande Trail is easy if you pick the right section to ride. Rent bikes in Glenwood Springs and take the Bike Express Bus to Aspen or Woody Creek. The ride back to Glenwood Springs from Aspen is generally flat or downhill except for an uphill stretch to Woody Creek and takes two to three hours, with plenty of opportunities to stop at restaurants along the way. The path is paved for 33 miles from Woody Creek to Glenwood Springs, while from Aspen to Woody Creek, it's a soft surface dirt trail.

Enjoy Aspen in Summer

Aspen is so synonymous with words like "rich", "famous", and "ski resort" that summer visitors may be happily surprised to find a welcoming, human-scale, and relaxed small town basking at the base of gorgeous mountain scenery.

No ostentatious resort palaces dominate the view; just stroll the quaint streets that date back to Aspen's origins as a mining town. The Hotel Jerome is a fine embodiment of the town's historic ambiance—step inside its doors and you'll be enveloped in full-blown Victorian-era decor.

Summer in Aspen means musical concerts at the Benedict Music Tent , walking tours, and gondola rides. The Silver Queen gondola departs from the middle of town; ride 2.5 miles to the top for splendid views, free guided nature tours and disc (Frisbee) golf.

The best time to visit colorado in the summer , in conclusion.

The afternoons in Colorado in the summer can be extremely pleasant with lots of abundant sunshine . The days are often warm and then sometimes cool off as the sun goes down in the evening.

The climate is very dry, so you won’t experience too much humidity unless there has been some recent rain. And even then, the humidity doesn’t stick around for very long.

Temperatures will range depending on the altitude. The higher you go, the cooler the weather in Colorado will be, especially in the early mornings and evenings. Be sure to check the average temperatures for the town (and month) you’ll be visiting. Be sure to read about the weather in Colorado here .

For summer afternoons in Colorado, here’s what you’ll need. I’ve included what to bring for a light hike and also a more adventurous type of activity.

Colorado packing guide

Packing List for Colorado in the Summer

T-shirts or tank tops are the best way to be comfortable during most of your days if you’re outside during your visit to Colorado. T-shirts and casual shorts or pants are common summer mountain outfits in Colorado.

The sun is warm and the climate is dry so you’ll be really comfortable in short sleeve tops during the day. You may also consider a moisture-wicking t-shirt if you’re going to be doing some light hiking or a more active afternoon.

The weather in Colorado in June, July, and August is extremely warm and enjoyable. Nice warm sunny days!

Here are some of my top choices for shirts and tank tops to wear in Colorado.

The weather in Colorado should be perfect for either shorts or capri pants. If you plan on being active and going for hikes and walks, it’ll be great to have some shorts that are an active blend of materials. When you’re looking for what to wear in Colorado, these clothes have a great combination of cotton, spandex, and nylon. Just perfect for the weather in Colorado in June, July, or August.

This will allow for flexibility, comfort, and lightness which makes for the best hiking attire. If the weather is very hot (August) you may want to stick with activewear (instead of any heavy cotton) for breathability, durability, and comfort.

Two of my favorites:

The North Face Women’s Aphrodite 2.0 Capri Pant

In my opinion, a long-sleeve t-shirt is perfect Colorado clothing for the days that start off cool, turn to warm, and then finish off a little cloudy.

In Colorado in the summer, oftentimes when the sun goes behind the clouds it can get chilly!

Once this happens, all you may need are some long sleeves to make you perfectly comfortable. A long-sleeved shirt is the perfect hiking attire for wrapping around your waist until you need it. We’ll chat a lot more about layers in the Colorado Packing List for Winter. Layers are an essential way to pack for winter or summer in Colorado.

A few of my favorite long-sleeve t-shirts:

Under Armour Women’s HeatGear Long Sleeve T-Shirt

If there’s wind in the forecast or a very cloudy day ahead you’ll want to have a light jacket with you.

Clouds and wind could make the Colorado temperature pretty cool. Go ahead and pack that light jacket, you could certainly need it and you’ll be glad you did! Summer hiking outfits in Colorado surely include having a light jacket with you.

For those occasions when you want to dip into the river or soak in hot springs or a hot tub, you must bring your swimsuit!

Many Colorado hotels and resorts have hot tubs that you can use year-round so a swimsuit is always a good idea. Even in the middle of winter!

American Trends Women’s One Piece Bathing Suite Atletic Modest Swimwear

In the category of sandals, I usually pack a cute pair of sandals to wear to lunch or dinner out with friends when preparing for a trip to Colorado in summer.

In addition, I bring a pair of very casual outdoor-style sandals such as Birkenstocks , Chacos , or Keens . These are styles that will be comfortable to wear on a less flat surface and that have supportive tread to them. Even if it’s only for dirt or sand, it’s nice to be prepared with a pair of sandals that are slightly rustic. Especially if you’re making a trip up to the mountains and higher elevations.

The rustic sandals will also come in handy if you’re planning on spending time near a Colorado river or on a lake.

Packing List Colorado

If you’re planning on doing some hiking you’ll definitely want to bring the right footwear. I lean towards trail running sneakers for this because I find them to be on the lighter side, very comfortable, and they take up less room in my luggage than hiking boots. Plus, they’re more flexible than tall hiking boots and I enjoy that too.

But, if you’re planning on doing some moderate to difficult hiking or long all-day hikes, you’ll want a hiking boot that offers a lot more support than a trail running sneaker. Travel tip: Wear them on the plane or bring them in a backpack as a carry-on. This way, they don’t take up room in your checked luggage. Make sure one of these is on your Colorado packing list.

Interestingly, many people wear trail running sneakers or low hiking shoes around as their day-to-day shoes in Colorado. It’s the style of the outdoor lifestyle. Thus, when you’re planning your Colorado summer outfits, consider wearing a low lightweight trail running sneaker as fashionable, comfortable footwear.

Here are the hiking shoes I recommend for your trip to the west!

Here are some of my personal choices:

Socks might not seem very important but they certainly are!

If you’re going to be active on your trip to Colorado in the summer you should wear socks that provide cushioning to the front and the heel of the foot.

Socks that are specifically designed for hiking also hold up really well, making them worth the higher price point than typical socks. Wool is the most popular hiking sock material as it’s great for regulating temperature and durability. A couple of my favorite brands are Smartwool and Darn Tough . Be sure to add some of these to your packing list for Colorado!

The abundant sunshine in Colorado makes it extremely important to keep your head covered. When you’re planning on being outside for a long time you would benefit from any type of hat that protects your scalp.

Whether that’s with a light baseball cap on hot days or a wool hat on cooler days, it’s a great idea to be prepared with a hat! An adventure hat that has a brim and chin strap is a perfect option if you’ll be on a raft or boat. These are lightweight and typically have sun protection.

Plus, hats are great for shading light from your face. Protecting your eyes and skin from the sun is super important, especially in a sunny destination like Colorado.

One of my favorite hats for summer in the mountains:

Eddie Bauer Women’s Exploration UPF Wide Brim Hat

The weather in Colorado in June, July, and August certainly includes abundant sunshine so these accessories are essential. A cute summer hat is a perfect addition to your Colorado summer outfit.

Packing list for Colorado

Sunglasses are another essential item that goes on the list to pack for your trip to Colorado. With Colorado boasting over 300 days of sunshine, you’ll be very happy you brought your sunglasses.

Choose a pair that has polarized lenses since they’re designed to reduce glare and filter out reflected light. Even if you’re in Colorado in the winter, you’ll want sunglasses with you. The reflection and glare that comes from snow can be harsh if you don’t have sun protection.

Oakley Oo9013 Frogskins Square Sunglasses

It’s important to consider the bags that you’ll need to pack for a Colorado vacation. You’ll want different bags for different activities and situations. And not having the right one can be frustrating.

Bags to consider when you’re planning on some short hikes or excursions are a crossbody, a fanny pack, or a small day hike bag. If you’ll be bike riding or something similar, a crossbody is a perfect choice! There’s no need to hold onto the bag because it comfortably fits around you. And, they’re made small enough to not be in the way of arm movement. This bag is sized for just the essentials and it’s the perfect item to add to your packing list for Colorado.

A fanny pack is another super simple way to carry just the things you need on a long walk around town or down a paved trail. It will perfectly hold your phone, some extra sunscreen, lip protection, and a small wallet. And the fanny pack “style” is IN!

A small day hike bag is the largest option in the small bag category.

A day hike bag is a great choice for an all-day excursion as you can add some lunch, a water bottle, a long-sleeved shirt, and a larger camera or other goodies. They usually have pockets for a map, too.

This Osprey Daylight Daypack is one of the best daypacks I have found! I’m a big fan of Osprey and have a few different bags that I’ve been using for years!

Osprey Daylight Daypack, Dream Purple, One Size

best time to visit colorado in summer

Once the sun goes down, the weather in Colorado typically gets cooler, even in the summer. It’s very different from a humid destination where you can have regular warm summer nights. Thus, bringing a light jacket to dinner or an outdoor event is usually a good idea.

Style in Colorado is casual. Jeans that are “dressed up” with a fancy blouse can be sufficient for a nice dinner out with friends or family. Of course, there are always opportunities to dress up as elegantly as you’d like! When you’re figuring out your Colorado outfits in summer, just know that comfort comes first, and that mountain style is very casual.

But, as a western destination, it’s generally acceptable to be casual and comfortable. You’ll see a lot of denim in Colorado!

Cowboy boots are always in style in Colorado. Western wear is a fun way to embrace western culture and fit right in. Cowboy hats included! When you’re packing for your Colorado trip, add your cowboy boots to the list!

For Outdoor Activities

The weather can change fast in Colorado, during any season. This is why it can be hard to know what to pack for Colorado.

Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable prepared and flexible. As I mentioned above, I usually wear either a tank top or an activewear t-shirt (not 100% cotton) as a first layer if the forecast is for sun and warmth. This is true for a day hike too!

Over the t-shirt or tank top, I’ll wear a light, thin long-sleeved shirt that will help keep me warm if there’s a breeze or it’s early morning.

This is especially true if you’re spending time at a higher elevation as the mornings can be very chilly!

A vest is a great idea to pack for your Colorado summer trip. A vest will be especially useful for days that will be mixed with sun and clouds.

The vest will keep your core body warm and your arms free to move around . Comfortable movement is important if you’re hiking, walking, or running.

If you’re planning on doing some hiking in Colorado you’ll definitely want a supportive hiking boot, trail running sneaker or outdoor-style sandal. (as mentioned above)

Many of the mountain towns in Colorado have rivers where you can enjoy a ride on a tube or just hang out by the water and watch the kayakers. Outdoor sandals are supportive, versatile, and even stylish!

A perfect footwear choice for these activities is a brand such as Chacos or Keens. They offer solid tread on the bottom, they’re easy to put on your feet and they can be worn in the water.

Chaco Women’s Z1 Classic Sandal

best time to visit colorado in summer

Rain isn’t nearly as common as sunshine in Colorado but it’s still really nice to be prepared! Having a rain jacket on hand that you can fold up small and add to your day pack or backpack is a great idea.

You’ll certainly be happy that you have it if you run into some rain showers! Chances are, the rain won’t stick around for a long time, and you’ll dry quickly –  but it’s still a good idea to have one with you. Add this to your packing list for Colorado.

I recommend the North Face Women’s Resolve 2 Waterproof Hooded Rain Jacket :

Trekking poles are an awesome idea to pack for your trip to Colorado in the summer.

They help you be more efficient when hiking, especially if you aren’t accustomed to the altitude.

You can cover more ground, get more exercise in your shoulders and arms and increase your speed with trekking poles.

There are some great options that will fold down small enough to fit into your luggage! This pair of trekking poles from TrailBuddy is a great choice that collapses down and is easy to pack!

Cascade Mountain Tech Lightweight Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Trekking Poles with Extended Down Grip Plus Tip Kit

Essential Accessories

You must stay hydrated in Colorado! It’s a very dry climate making it easy to become dehydrated.

I recommend bringing your favorite refillable water bottle on your trip and refilling it as often as you can. If you’re going hiking, there are some great options for water carriers that are more conducive to outdoor activities.

A Camelbak hydration pack is my first choice as they are lightweight and comfortable! There are plenty of other options that will wrap around you so your hands and arms are free. These are the best for short hikes and walks! If you’re bringing a day pack or larger backpack on your excursion then you can fit a water bottle in one of the side pockets.

CamelBak Classic Hydration Pack, 85 oz

best time to visit colorado in summer

Worth mentioning again is how strong the sun is in Colorado! Do not leave the house without sunscreen on your face and body.

With over 300 days of sunshine in the state, you’ll benefit from protecting your skin and lips from the harsh sun. Grab a “sport” sunscreen for those hiking or biking days when you’ll be sweating and could use the added protection.

Of course, you can always buy some once you arrive in Colorado but if you want to be truly prepared, pick some up before you go.

Your lips also need protection from the powerful sun in Colorado. It’s smart to bring with you a lip balm that has sunscreen in it to keep your lips moist and protected.

The amount of protection you’ll need from insects is dependent on where in Colorado you’ll be spending your time. There are plenty of areas where you won’t see any bugs. But if you’re planning to be on or near a river, or in a forest you’ll definitely want to have some repellent to protect you from mosquitos and bugs. If camping is on your schedule, it’s a must!

A good hat will keep your face protected and shade the top of your head from the harsh sun. There are quite a few stylish options to choose from that offer a comfortable fit, breathability, and durability.

You probably don’t need to pack snacks before you arrive in Colorado because there are so many places to buy them! But, if you have some favorites that you like to have with you, get them ready and take them along when you’re packing for Colorado. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for when you need a little energy boost.

Colorado has a dry climate and some people feel it in their eyes. Eye drops can come in really handy to keep your eyes moist, especially if you feel some allergies or have itchy eyes while you’re visiting.

It’s a good idea to bring some nasal spray with you to keep your nose hydrated. A saline spray may prevent an extremely dry nose during your stay in Colorado.

Other Clothing to Pack

Bring comfy clothes to sleep in and maybe something warmer than you’d expect, just in case you have some cool evenings wherever you’re staying and sleeping!

Summer Dresses

Summer dresses are a perfect Colorado outfit for the beautiful weather and the casual dress code in Colorado .

Bring a sweater or light scarf to put over your shoulders in case of a breeze or a cold evening. Active-style dresses are perfect for Colorado, as you can move around and be active in them. You could go from a light hike or walk straight to happy hour and look cute!

You’ll see many mountain Colorado outfits that include cute dresses as you travel through the state.

Again, here are some of my favorite summer dresses to wear in the mountains in Colorado!

Extra Battery Chargers:  This is always a great idea, just in case of an emergency.

Binoculars: These are handy if you’re interested in spotting wildlife.

Waterproof dry bag: If you’re planning to be on a boat or a raft, a dry bag is very helpful. Your warm clothes and camera or phone will thank you.

Go Pro Camera: For those active days surrounded by scenic views that you want to remember forever!

Quick Dry Towel: This is a great addition if you’re on a raft or boat to dry off quickly.

Headphones: You might want headphones on the airplane or to listen to some tunes during a short hike.

Summer is a spectacular time to visit Colorado as the weather is ideal. During the transitional months of May and October, there will be a mix of unpredictable weather. This is because the seasons are changing and there’s a big shift in temperatures.

Early June is a perfect time to visit the mountains of Colorado, as the prices are lower due to summer just getting started. You could find some great rates and the weather is typically warm and sunny!

September is another special time to visit as the leaves are changing and creating a colorful backdrop. The temperates will be dropping towards the end of September and the weather turns very cozy. It’s my favorite time of year and I recommend it as one of the best times to visit Colorado!

The outdoors beckons in the fall, and other great tips for when to visit Colorado Springs

In Colorado Springs , beautiful mountain vistas, awesome outdoor adventures and interesting cultural experiences are available year round . The visitors center at the Garden of the Gods offers an interactive way to see a 365-day time lapse of the famous rock formations. Whether you choose to visit in the summer when the landscapes are green, in the fall when the foliage is at its prime, or in the winter when everything is under a blanket of snow, you won’t be disappointed.

Visiting  Colorado is always in season, but here are our tips on when to go to Colorado Springs.

High Season: June - August

Best time for festivals

During the high season, you’ll enjoy scenic green landscapes and wildflowers during the long days of summer. You’ll also join plenty of tourists on a similar mission. Avoid the crowds at popular attractions by adventuring early in the day and late in the afternoon. The temperatures are milder and the sunlight is better for photos at those times. There are a handful of festive events to attend Memorial Day through Labor Day, so plan accordingly.

Shoulder Season: September - October

Best time for leaf peepin’

Fall is a favorite time for exploring outdoors. The weather is comfortable, the crowds are considerably less, and the scenery is stunning. Take a drive and admire the fall colors on the way to Royal Gorge Canyon or while cruising up Pikes Peak . Or take a hike to see the foliage up close. Note the timing varies slightly from year to year, especially at different elevations, so keep an eye on the fall color forecast .

The US Olympic and Paralympic Museum

Low Season: November to February

Best time for museums and indoor fun

The quietest months for tourism are usually after the holidays, in January and February. There are plenty of interesting museums and a few castles to explore to keep warm indoors, including the Pioneers Museum , the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum , and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame . But if you think it’s too cold to do anything outside, think again. Locals and visitors still enjoy the outdoors, even when there is snow on the ground, because of the abundant sunshine and mild temps. Most attractions in Colorado Springs are open all year – including the drive to Pikes Peak, weather permitting.

Shoulder Season: March - May

Best time to have the place to yourself

Things start to ramp up again as families arrive for spring break during various weeks in March. The warmer weather makes outdoor activities more enjoyable, and the budding flowers and green leaves give the city and scenery more charm. The crowds are less of a concern during the shoulder season.

The crowds start to thin out as the holidays wind down. But what do we do with all that leftover fruitcake? Manitou Springs has an entire festival where it’s OK to let the fruitcake fly. Competitions at the festival are judged based on distance, accuracy, speed and balance. Temperatures are usually their lowest this time of year, around 18℉ - 45℉, but this fest will surely warm you up.  Hotel prices are generally at their  lowest as well.

Key event: The Great Fruitcake Toss

Cripple Creek Ice Festival

Visitors will find plenty of museums to enjoy as a respite from the winter chill. January, February and March are generally the snowiest months of the year. A major event in February is the Cripple Creek Ice Festival, where ice carvers break out their chainsaws to make large blocks into art; it’s the perfect celebration of the season. Meanwhile, in Manitou Springs, you can get into the spirit of Carnivale and sample homemade gumbo for just 75 cents.

Key events: Cripple Creek Ice Festival , Bighorn Sheep Day , Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-Off & Carnivale parade

As the weather warms up to the 50s with still occasional snowstorms, families return to town to celebrate spring break and attend the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade downtown. And Taste of Pikes Peak gets underway with over 80 restaurants and vendors coming together to serve up yummy bites.

Key events: Taste of Pikes Peak , St. Patrick’s Day Festival

First Friday Art Walks resume in Old Colorado City, offering visitors an opportunity to browse the galleries and meet the artists. Pikes Peak Restaurant Week is also a great excuse to try new restaurants with fixed-price discounted menus.

Key events: Art Walks in Old Colorado City  (April - December), Spring Wine Extravaganza , Pikes Peak Restaurant Week

Spring is a beautiful time, as we enjoy May flowers - though there has been an occasional blizzard. Temps are generally in the 40s - 70s, with the cheapest hotel prices about 17% less than average. Late May, the town kicks off summer early with Territory Days in Old Colorado City Memorial Day Weekend, known as Colorado’s largest street fair for more than 40 years.

Key events: Territory Days , Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival , Pikes Peak Birding & Nature Festival , MeadowGrass Music Festival

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

June is generally a busy month in Colorado Springs, as visitor numbers climb and hotel prices soar - an average of 53%, the highest prices all year. While local events like the Old Colorado City Farmers Market get underway, a major event comes to town: the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Racers speed their vehicles to the top as fast as they can. (The record is under eight minutes!) Spectators can grab a ticket and camping permit to get close to all the action.

Key events: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb , Starlight Spectacular ,  Top of the World Rodeo , Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast ,  Woodland Music Series , Old Colorado City Farmers Market

With summer in full swing, the 4th of July Symphony in the Park draws crowds to Memorial Park, along with several other community events. July tends to be the hottest month, with the average temps around 56℉ - 86℉, so cool down and go whitewater rafting in Cañon City. Stop by the Whitewater Festival, which promises boats, bands and beer.

Key events: 4th of July Symphony in the Park , Pikes Peak Or Bust Rodeo , Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival , Rocky Mountain State Games

If auto racing up Pikes Peak Highway wasn’t enough for you in June, how about running to the top? In August, the Pikes Peak Marathon + Ascent challenges runners to go 13.1 miles to the top of Barr Trail then descend to the start. Or maybe watching donkey races at Derby Days in Cripple Creek might be more your speed.

Key events: Donkey Derby Days , Ride for the Brand , Vino & Notes Wine Festival , Hot Rod Rock & Rumble , Mountain Arts Festival , Pikes Peak Marathon , Manitou Springs Colorado Wine Festival , La Vida

Labor Day Lift Off

The summer season ends with a bang when over 70 hot-air balloons launch from Memorial Park as part of the Labor Day Lift Off. Temperatures start to drop and so do the crowds. Photographers will enjoy snapping pretty scenery as the mountains turn from green to gold.

Key events: Labor Day Lift Off , Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack , Oktoberfest , Royal 50 MTB Bike Race

October temps are generally in the upper 60s and as the month winds down, there are plenty of festivities to celebrate Halloween. To warm up, you can watch teams race coffins – yes, coffins – down the mountain in Manitou Springs at the Emma Crawford Coffin Races. You gotta see it to believe it. Families will enjoy trick-or-treating and activities at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Royal Gorge Bridge.

Key events: Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Festival , Arts Month , Boo at the Zoo , Boo at the Bridge

While the weather is cool but not cold yet, November is a great time to take a breather and enjoy year-round attractions before the holidays. Or put on a bear suit for a 5k or 3K Bear Run through Bear Creek Regional Park.  Then, get a head start on holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday in Manitou Springs, which is filled with mom and pop shops.

Key event: Bear Creek Bear Run

December tends to be one of the coldest months of the year, with temps around 18℉ - 47℉. Hotel prices are generally low as well, though the holidays draw in a crowd. Families come to explore The North Pole - Santa’s Workshop , a vintage amusement park, and see the animals at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Electric Safari. There are also special light displays at the Broadmoor hotel and Seven Falls, including a mega gingerbread display to get you in the holiday spirit.

Key events: Electric Safari , Holidays at the Broadmoor

Best Times To Visit Denver

The best times to visit Denver are April through May and September through October. The city's shoulder seasons are characterized by comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices than the summer high season. Denver welcomes the majority of its visitors between June and August when the weather is warm and arid; however, the rise in temps also leads to a rise in hotel rates. And despite its proximity to the Rocky Mountain ski areas, the Mile High City sees a drop-off in tourism during the winter months, which means you can score some great deals on rooms here.

Before you lock down your dates, be sure to take a look at Denver's events calendar. The Mile High City is a popular convention location, and ongoing events can affect room rates in the downtown area.

Cindy Hirschfeld has lived in Colorado for more than 30 years and frequently travels around the state.

Colorado Springs, like Denver, abuts the Rocky Mountain foothills and brims with ways to enjoy the outdoors, although it runs at a slower pace. Once known for its megachurches and kitschy attractions like recreated ancient cliff dwellings, Colorado’s second-largest city now has a more cosmopolitan vibe: Notable openings and upgrades include a stunning $91 million Olympic and Paralympic museum and a major revamp of a resort overlooking the red sandstone of the Garden of the Gods park. Later this year, the 8,000-seat Sunset Amphitheater will open, as will the Hotel Polaris , at the U.S. Air Force Academy, advertised as the country’s only hotel with flight simulators. Through all this change, the mighty 14,115-foot Pikes Peak remains constant, a beacon on the western skyline — though with a recently refurbished cog railway.

Recommendations

  • Garden of the Gods is a city park filled with fantastical red sandstone formations, an informative visitor center and 21 miles of hiking and biking trails.
  • U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum celebrates American athletes with interactive exhibits for each Olympic and Paralympic sport and high-tech displays.
  • The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway takes riders to the top of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak and back down, including a stop at the Summit Visitor Center for high-altitude doughnuts.
  • AdAmAn Alley is a downtown walkway with murals, sculpture and an LED installation, all created to commemorate the 2022 centennial of a local mountaineering club.

  • Ladyfingers Letterpress prints offbeat greeting cards and stationery in house and stocks gifts, too.
  • Poor Richard’s is an independent bookstore that has served the city for almost 50 years and includes an adjacent coffee shop and casual restaurant.
  • The Garden of the Gods Resort and Club , established in 1949 as a private facility and opened to the public in 2013, unveiled a $40 million renovation last year that included updates to its restaurant. It also refreshed the sleek and spacious rooms in the main lodge, which all have patios or balconies overlooking the Garden of the Gods park and the Rocky Mountains beyond. Amenities include golf, tennis, swimming, an on-site adventure outfitter and an excellent spa and a concierge medical center. Rooms in summer start at $600.
  • The Mining Exchange , a boutique hotel run by Wyndham that is also newly renovated, occupies a 1902 building downtown that served as a stock exchange for miners. Rooms include historic brick accents and the hotel recently added a new lobby bar and coffee shop. Rooms start at $300.
  • Kinship Landing , one of a new breed of hotels aimed at adventure-oriented travelers, opened downtown in 2021. It offers some rooms with garage-style roller doors that open to the outside, an eight-bed private bunkroom and even a scenic deck for urban camping (bring your own tent). Rooms start at $150.
  • For short-term rentals , look in Old Colorado City, a historic neighborhood near Garden of the Gods park, where you can easily walk to restaurants and galleries. Downtown Colorado Springs is less than three miles away.
  • The most efficient way to get around is by car . PikeRide , an electric bike-share program, has 60-plus hubs in and around Colorado Springs ($1 to unlock a bike, then 25 cents per minute, or $30 for a four-hour pass). Mountain Metro runs the public bus service , including a free shuttle around downtown.

People hike down a dusty path in a mountainous natural area during the daytime.

A dramatic view of Colorado Springs, framed by rough-hewn cliffs, comes early in a 2.2-mile roundtrip hike up Mount Cutler in North Cheyenne Cañon Park . The popular city park added seven miles of new trails three years ago, but this classic route never gets too steep and has a big payoff. From the summit, inhale fragrant juniper, piñon and ponderosa pine while viewing the sparkling tiers of the Seven Falls waterfall far below in South Cheyenne Cañon and the forested slopes of the Pike National Forest rolling westward. From nearby Cheyenne Mountain, you may hear the chimes coming from the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun , a granite tower with a viewing deck overlooking the city. You’d never guess from this vantage point that a large military complex , built during the Cold War, still operates 2,000 feet deep within the mountain.

A person sips a drink on an outdoor deck on an overcast day. The sun, behind clouds, is low, just above a mountain range.

At Lumen8 , a rooftop restaurant and bar that opened downtown in 2022, post up by a fire pit, sip one of seven local brews on tap (from $6) and gaze at the majestic, snow-capped Pikes Peak. Then head up the street to the low-lit dining room at Four by Brother Luck , where its chef and owner, Brother Luck, who appeared on “Top Chef,” offers Southwestern-inspired dishes like sweet-and-savory blue cornbread accompanied with wojapi (a thick berry sauce traditional in Lakota cuisine), charred octopus in mango broth with tangy Peruvian peppers, and a fun dessert called the Forest Floor with sweet elements styled as edible “flora.” Dishes are a la carte, or four courses for $75.

People sit around a table, talking and laughing, in a restaurant or bar that has brick walls.

At Garden of the Gods , one of the country’s most unusual city parks and a designated National Natural Landmark, 300 million years of erosion have shaped the red sandstone into fantastical formations — with names like the Kissing Camels, Siamese Twins and Balanced Rock — that strikingly contrast the often vivid-blue sky. Stop first at the visitor center , which is chock-full of exhibits about the park’s geology, history, and flora and fauna (a species of dinosaur was even discovered there). Then explore some of the short, interconnected hiking trails that allow you to view the striated, pitted rock up close, starting with the 1.5-mile paved Perkins Central Garden loop (a free shuttle provides access to the trailhead through the third week of August). Or see the park on horseback (from $100), bike ( rentals , from $40, available at the visitor center) or by car. Free entry.

It’s perfectly legit to drink at Ivywild School , a former elementary school turned food hall, where the well-worn wood floors creak underfoot and the entryway sign is written on a blackboard. The school was built in 1916 and decommissioned in 2009; now, instead of rows of small desks, former classrooms house a variety of food counters and bars, as well as a whiskey distillery and an eclectic gift shop . Try Bristol Brewing Company’s pub for its signature Laughing Lab Scottish ale ($6.50 for a pint); Ivywild Kitchen for a spicy, buttermilk-brined chicken sandwich ($11.95), washed down with house-made nonalcoholic ginger beer ($4) from the Principal’s Office ; and Gold Star Bakery for a splurgy but delectable slice of salted maple pie ($7).

A person uses an interactive exhibit to simulate alpine skiing.

With the Paris Summer Olympics around the corner, stoke the fervor for amazing athletic feats and tear-jerking gold-medal moments at the excellent U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum (entry $19.95), open since 2020. (Colorado Springs has been home to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee since 1978, and has a major training center.) The building’s striking exterior — which features thousands of aluminum panels shimmering in the sunlight — hints at the high-tech displays inside, including virtual sport simulators (try archery!) and other interactive exhibits for each sport. A gallery of Olympic torches, from 1936 to the present, contains inspiring video footage from the torch relays. One of the most moving exhibits focuses on the 11 Israeli athletes taken hostage at the 1972 Munich Games, and includes the ABC sports announcer Jim McKay’s somber broadcast of their fate.

Colorado Springs is showing more of its artsy side these days, even in the heart of downtown. From the museum, stroll a few blocks to AdAmAn Alley , a walkway where murals, sculpture and an LED installation commemorate the 2022 centennial of a local mountaineering club , AdAmAn, that climbs Pikes Peak each New Year’s Eve to set off fireworks. Need a live tarantula, taxidermied butterfly or deck of tarot cards? Find these, and mystical treasures, at Cronk Art and Curiosities (the nearby Novis Mortem Collective also offers taxidermy as art). Indulge a sweet tooth with a whiskey-and-cherry-cordial truffle at Cacao Chemistry , then duck into Ladyfingers Letterpress , where the on-site press produces sassy cards (“Don’t forget me when your start-up goes public”), and Poor Richard’s , an indie bookstore that’s served local literature lovers for almost 50 years.

A person wearing an apron behind a bar holds a cloche filled with white smoke.

Smoked cocktail at Inefable

The low-key décor lets the food shine at new restaurant Inefable above the just-renovated Avenue 19 food hall, where the chef and owner Fernando Trancoso boosts traditional Mexican dishes with French, Spanish and South American influences. Bright flavors meld nicely in a slightly spicy tropical fruit gazpacho (pineapple, passion fruit, lemon and cucumber) with poached shrimp ($16), while a pumpkin-seed green mole adds a twist to a traditional duck confit ($39). A recent nightly special featured cochinita pibil ($42), a Yucatán-style slow-roasted, fall-off-the-bone pork shank that’s been marinated overnight in a sauce with Maya spices, red chiles and achiote (a slightly peppery spice). The cocktail menu reflects Mr. Trancoso’s Mexican roots with almost three dozen varieties of tequila and mezcal.

A person plays the piano while two other people appear to sing along to the music.

It’s a little corny, sure, but belting out tunes like “Sweet Caroline” or “Piano Man” during the nightly singalongs at the Golden Bee , a pub within the venerable Broadmoor resort on the city’s west side, is also a lot of fun, in a seventh-inning stretch at the baseball game kind of way. The bar is a 19th-century English pub that was shipped over and reassembled in this space in 1961, ornate woodwork and all. Everybody gets a songbook, and the piano player leads the program (and takes requests). Order a pint ($10) or a half-yard ($28) of Extra Special Bee, an English-style pale ale from the local brewery Red Leg, to wet your whistle.

A person wearing a helmet rides a bike up a dirt path during the daytime in a mountainous natural area.

North Cheyenne Cañon Park has 26 miles of trails, including one up Mount Cutler.

A dish of French toast with sliced almonds on top and a slice of orange on the side.

Adam's Mountain Cafe

Have breakfast in Manitou Springs, a quirky enclave at the base of Pikes Peak — but instead of taking Highway 24, take a more interesting detour by driving Colorado Avenue west through the Old Colorado City neighborhood. The area was once its own town, established in 1859 as a supply hub. Today, several blocks are lined with historic buildings, galleries and shops, such as Story Coffee , a small cafe and roastery. Continue driving west to the homey Adam’s Mountain Cafe , an almost 40-year-old favorite for hearty meals like orange-almond French toast ($12) or shrimp and grits ($18). Then stop by one of the town’s eight mineral-springs fountains for a swig of naturally carbonated, slightly metallic-tasting water (each spring has a different “flavor”); the Native Americans who first lived here attributed healing properties to the water.

Take the world’s highest cog railway to the summit of Pikes Peak (from $59 per person for the three-and-a-half-hour round trip). Reopened in 2021 after a $100 million, four-year overhaul, the train is the easiest way to ascend the mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” (there’s also a 19-mile toll road and hiking trails up). You’ll ride past cascading streams, the ruins of the Halfway House Hotel and perhaps a few bighorn sheep. At the spacious Summit Visitor Center , recently rebuilt with an energy-efficient modern design, don’t miss the doughnuts (from $2.99 for two); a beloved tradition since 1916, they’re baked from a recipe that only works well above 14,000 feet. Munching on a cinnamon-sugar doughnut amid 360-degree views of mountains and plains may inspire you to pen your own tribute.

The 12 Best Places to Visit in Colorado

Y ou could spend decades-as I have-exploring Colorado's stunning scenery and top attractions and still have more to see and do. No single trip can cover everything that makes the state a traveler's dream destination. AFAR's roundup of things to see and do in Colorado offered 16 tips to get you started, including driving the peak-to-peak scenic byway, visiting Denver Art Museum, and soaking in Iron Mountain Hot Springs. However, if you want to hit the highlights, here are your main targets, divided up by season.

The best places to visit in Colorado in fall

Colorado is spectacular year-round, but autumn's colors and temperatures make it a particularly magical time to visit.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Visiting the dunes typically means overnighting at the park's campground , because few accommodations exist near this remote spot some 230 miles south of Denver. But campers are rewarded with dusk and dawn's light shows on the sand dunes, which ripple beneath the sawtooth Sangre de Cristo mountains. Summers are scorching, but in fall, sand surfaces remain comfortable all day. Scramble across the dunes, or rent a sandboard to surf the slopes like waves.

Dunton Hot Springs

Dunton is the quintessential Colorado getaway for those who can afford it ($1,400 per night is typical). Guests cozy into hand-built log cabins that combine historic patina with western art and worldly comforts like sustainably made beds and linens. Rates include food and drink that make every meal feel special-think roasted pork with charred leek grits followed by poached rhubarb panna cotta-but the steaming springs are this getaway's raison d'être. Views from the rustic yet luxe bathhouse showcase aspen groves that turn amber in autumn, and one guest cabin (Well House) includes its own spring-fed soaking tub.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Most of this park's 4.3 million annual visitors flock here in summer, so I go in September for fewer traffic backups on Trail Ridge Road (a must-do drive traversing treeless alpine tundra). Fall is also mating season for the park's elk herd, and the possibility of hearing bulls' distinctive bugles adds extra magic to any hike. I always glimpse elk along the Moraine Park Loop, a 5.5-mile circuit that can be shortened to preference.

Best places to visit in Colorado in winter

Snow envelopes much of the state in the winter months, turning urban areas into winter wonderlands and promising world-class outdoor activities.

Meow Wolf Convergence Station

In fall 2023, Denver's fun house of immersive art installations launched Sips (With a Z), a cocktail bar and lounge dedicated to providing "a sanctuary of chill amidst the hubbub of quantum travel." Mirrored walls reflect a mashup of classical sculpture and graffiti art, and vintage furniture provides myriad perches for pondering the installation's experiential art. The bar is only open to Meow Wolf Denver visitors and event guests. While the previous art triggered sight, sound, and touch, the new lounge also titillates our sense of taste.

Sure, it's far from major cities, but I wager that the only winter enclaves with mountain vistas that rival Telluride's are in the Alps. These jagged southwest Colorado slopes offer scenery so jawdropping, I always feel dazzled, regardless of the snow conditions. And several mountaintop eateries showcase the splendor. Perched at 11,966 feet, Alpino Vino ranks as the highest restaurant in North America and serves Italian food and wine specialties within a cozy stone and log cabin. More tableside panoramas (and an award-winning wine list) await at Allred's at 10,551 feet.

Silverthorne

Once little more than a refueling stop for motorists traveling Interstate 70, Exit 205 is now an appealing home base for three nearby Colorado ski resorts (Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Breckenridge) and a destination in its own right. Stay at Hotel Indigo , the chain's first mountain property housing an upscale tequila bar and indoor swimming pool. Go snowshoeing or Nordic skiing at Raven Golf Club (free to the public; rent gear at Gore Range Sports) and enjoy après at the Bluebird Market food hall , where weekends find live bands entertaining drinkers at the central bar.

Best places to visit in Colorado in spring

Visitor numbers drop during the spring, but Colorado still puts on a show as flowers bloom and the arts scene wows guests.

Casa Bonita

Coloradoans Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of the South Park animated TV series) spent $40 million to renovate this Denver icon of Mexican food and carnivalesque stunts. Summer 2023 kicked off its much-anticipated reopening. Diners (up to 2,100 of them, at capacity) still line up with trays for meals, now designed by James Beard–nominated chef Dana Rodriguez. Cliff diving continues in the waterfall-fed pool, and the multi-level dining room delivers more spectacle than ambiance.

Crowds taper but deals abound during this destination's shoulder season. April and May are when Aspen's celebrated restaurants often offer discounted menus and drink specials, and at these elevations (the Snowmass base village sits at 8,104 feet), snow blankets the slopes well beyond the resorts' mid-April closing date, making for prime ski conditions-and rowdy parties. At Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro , the springtime ritual includes uncorking staggering quantities of champagne on the summit-ringed outdoor deck.

Idyllic weather and blooming cactus make spring my favorite time to visit Colorado's canyon country, and Fruita is the best home base. From here, it's a 15-minute drive to the sculpted red rock sandstone spires of Colorado National Monument and 5 minutes to world-famous mountain bike trails. Fruita's walkable downtown includes the Hot Tomato , delivering Jersey-style pizza that's good as gospel. Live music often enlivens the pedestrian block, and for sips, there are wineries in Palisade, 30 minutes east.

Best places to visit in Colorado in summer

Colorado's hiking and biking trails come into their own during the warmer months while road-tripping offers an easy way to see much of the state-in an EV on many of the scenic byways .

Crested Butte

After 25 years in Colorado, I still gape at the beauty of Crested Butte , because in a state that's chockablock with pretty views, this town tops the list. Sheer peaks rise up beside the streets' grid, where colorful, mining-era Victorians line the sidewalks. No highway noise ruins the mountains' quiet, and only merry sounds emerge from main street bars and eateries. The surrounding trails wind through aspen groves and meadows that are deservedly famous for July's display of wildflowers.

Bachelor Gulch

Come summer, the Bachelor Gulch base area of Beaver Creek ski resort becomes the scene of a daily lawn and pool party that encapsulates what's splendid about Colorado. Views include aspen-covered mountainsides, and adventures on foot or bike follow trails leading into wildflower meadows. Play a round of cornhole on the lawn, then relocate to Wyld 's patio for plates showcasing Colorado-grown produce. Stay at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch (renovated in 2022) to cool off in its outdoor pool and sip rosé from the surrounding loungers.

Fort Collins

Visit during Colorado State's summer break, and you won't have to elbow your way into this city's esteemed breweries. (Crooked Stave makes some of my favorite sours.) Nationally known New Belgium Brewing organizes the annual Tour de Fat each August, when a parade of 20,000 wildly costumed cyclists pedal the streets. I make the 100-year-old Armstrong Hotel my downtown home base and stroll from its classy-hip rooms to such downtown shops as Scrumpy's Hard Cider Bar, which pours drink made from local homeowners' apple trees.

Rocky Mountain National Park has it all: pretty meadows, alpine lakes, and imposing mountains.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

I took these photos near Ranfurly in Central Otago, New Zealand. Anyone can use them please spread far and wide. :-) https://t.co/NUWpLiqY2S — Dr Andrew Dickson reform/ACC (@AndrewDickson13) May 10, 2024

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Ronnie from Jeremiah's Mobile Small Engine company responded quickly to my request. He gave me an approximate quote over the phone of how much it will cost, and he showed up an hour later once I agreed to the terms. He found the issue, took the engine apart, cleaned everything up, and it works like new again. He went above and beyond the service requested. He also gave me some tips on how to maintain the unit, so this won't happen again. I highly recommend this company if you have any small engine machines that need repair or tune up. I'm very happy with them. It was well worth the $249 I paid for the service.

Excellent!!! Ronnie was personable and a very able and efficient repairman. Our snowblower would not start and in less than an hour, it was running wonderfully! He also noticed the equipment was missing a sheer pin and he readily located one and installed before leaving. His pricing is very reasonable and having someone come to your residence, versus loading a snowblower and taking it to a shop is a huge bonus! He also gave me several tips on how to maintain our equipment. Very happy with this Yelp find!

Excellent service, quick, and very knowledgeable on small engine repair. I Highly recommend Ronnie. He was on time and diagnosed the problem right away. I would recommend Ronnie without reservation. If you have a lawn mower, snowblower, chain saw etc .. give him a call.

DO NOT USE THIS GUY. He came out to fix our mower when it wouldn't start, charged us $35 for a "travel fee" that he neglected to tell us about prior to him coming out (he had just said he would come out to us because we're close), scalped a portion of our yard when he tested it, and when we still had issues with our mower after he left, it took us two weeks of trying to contact him, a number of unanswered phone calls, and finally a pissed off phone conversation with him to get him back out to us. We called THE DAY AFTER he came out because our mower wouldn't mow 2 feet without dying. He did not shown up for our scheduled appointment THREE times (with NO courtesy phone call or apology). Do yourself a favor and go with someone with an actual storefront so that you don't have to go through the headache of trying to track this guy down.

Beware. Good reviews are almost all before 2017. Nearly every review since 2017 is 1 star. My experience was that there is a good reason for the low reviews. Stay away.

I called on Thursday to schedule a mobile service for my snow blower. Ron and I agreed that he would come by my house between 10am-11am on Saturday. No show and no call! Don't want to deal with any company that don't show up or call. I had to rearrange my schedule because of this appointment. Talk about BAD first impression... it shows irresponsibility from the start. Try somewhere else...

Called several certified dealers for my Honda about getting my lawnmower tuned up. They all said I could bring it in and it would be 2-3 weeks and it would be ready. Quoted me prices from $90-$140 for tuneup. That was too long and totally unacceptable. They clearly didn't want the business. I looked up Ronnie, who bought Jeremiah's, and he immediately picked up the phone and said he could be there the next morning. He showed up 20 minutes early but called before he arrived. He quoted me the trip charge and price and it was spot on. He tuned up, sharpened blades, and had my lawn mower in tip top shape in less than an hour. There as no mess and hassle at all. He's a very pleasant, polite, and professional man. Always says "yes sir" which is nice to hear this day and age. I would highly recommend Ronnie. He did good work for a fair price and best of all I didn't have to go anywhere and we was totally reliable. Will recommend him if anyone else needs a repair. I wish landscaping companies were as reliable as Ronnie!

Customers in Denver rate lawn mower repair services in the area as highly efficient and reliable.

Ronnie is fantastic. I'm not sure I'd go to any other small engine repair facility. Ronnie is always respectful and courteous and gives you the straight scoop on repairs. He doesn't gouge and has very reasonable prices. He got my lawnmower and snow blower fixed and for 1/2 of what the other shops charge. Honest and reliable. Ronnie travels all over to do repairs, so he is busy. Get on his schedule early. it's worth it. A++++ Highly recommended!

Customers report that technicians are knowledgeable and can diagnose and fix most lawn mower problems quickly.

First of all, do not make the mistake I made and load up your machine and take it to the address listed. This is his home. His service is based on him coming to you. Beyond that his service response was incredible and his workmanship very professional and thorough. I would definitely refer anyone to Jeremiah's Small Engine Repair.

Most customers report being extremely happy with the repair results and the overall customer service.
