Sometimes life can get you down. It can be confusing and challenging beyond belief. These inspirational life path quotes will comfort you.

Sometimes we just feel loss. Whether we recently lost our jobs, sufferered a bad breakup, or feel like all our peers are progressing quicker than we are – those feelings are there. There are times in life we all get that feeling that we don’t really know who we are, what we want, or where we want to go in the future.

Some people believe in the Numerology Life Path Number. As we’ve shared before, this is a combination formula that uses your birth date to place you on a numerology chart. That then gives you a life path number, which is a single digit number. This number then has a special meaning, and can show you a lot about yourself, your personality, and help guide you to the path you should take.

At the very least, you should give the Numerology Life Path Number a try. What do you have to lose? If that still doesn’t work – or if you’re just super wear about it – there are still some things you can do when you’re feeling a bit lost about things.

Confide in a close friend. Take time for yourself each day. Read inspiration life path quotes to help you get set on your journey, and to remind you that you’re not alone. Here are some great ones.

  • “Being compared to him [Ron Francis] is pretty cool for me, but I know I am a long way away. I feel really comfortable at center, being able to roam the ice and do your thing.” ~ Eric Staal

“Communicating is a bit of a problem. Playing in New York is great but there are times when I feel a long way from home.” ~ Chien-Ming Wang

  • “A long way of saying I’ve seen a lot of kind of more systemic and processed changes. Although we still are providing the kind of material you’re still seeing out there now.” ~ Susan Downey
  • “Of course, we’re so lucky to be in a time where that’s not our reality anymore. I just thought it was very interesting to go back to that time now, and to look at all of these issues that are still relevant today, but just in such a different way, and to see how we approach them and try to overcome them. Yeah, we’ve come a long way with medicine and women’s health in the Western world, but in a lot of parts of the rest of the world, that’s still a huge issue.” ~ Eve Hewson
  • “For me as a midfielder, Paul Scholes was the best possible teacher. When people ask me my hardest opponent, I always refer to Paul in training. Facing him improved me so much because his astonishing quality gave me something to aim for. He never gave the ball away, he could nutmeg you, he could make you look a fool, his range of passing was remarkable, his touch and awareness, everything was top notch. Seeing Scholesy made you stand back and realize you had a long way to go, because he was awesome.” ~ Darren Fletcher
  • “Because our Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ, are perfect, our dearest aspiration is to become like Them and eventually achieve the perfection that is possible and promised, even though each of us has such a long way to go.” ~ Cecil O. Samuelson

“Love, what a long way, to arrive at a kiss.” ~ Pablo Neruda

  • “I can’t stand whining. I can’t stand the kind of paralysis that some people fall into because they’re not happy with the choices they’ve made. You live in a time when there are endless choices … Money certainly helps, and having that kind of financial privilege goes a long way, but you don’t even have to have money for it. But you have to work on yourself … Do something!” ~ Hillary Clinton
  • “Do you suppose that I should have lived as long as I have if I had moved in the sphere of public life, and conducting myself in that sphere like an honorable man, had always upheld the cause of right, and conscientiously set this end above all other things? Not by a very long way, gentlemen; neither would any other man.” ~ Socrates

“We’ve come a long way, we’ve come a long way and we never even left L.A.” ~ Michelle Shocked

  • “It had the old double keyboard, an entirely different set of keys for capitals and figures so that the paper seemed a long way off, and the machine was as big and solid as a battlecruiser. Typing was then a muscular activity. You could ache after it. If you were not familiar with those vast keyboards, your hand wandered over them like a child lost in a wood. The noise might have been that of a shipyard on the Clyde. You would no more have thought of carrying one of those grim structures as you would have thought of traveling with a piano.” ~ J. B. Priestley
  • “We are a long way from getting back the jobs lost since President Bush took office.” ~ Pete Stark

you still have a long journey to go

Life is like unto a long journey with a heavy burden.

What do I believe? It has been a long journey of discovery. There have been hesitations and errors along the way, and no doubt will be more, because I am still learning, both about myself and about life.

Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world. Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you where you long to be. Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar, and you’ll live as you’ve never lived before.

I like someone who embraces life; who wants to be on a long journey but has no particular plan or destination in mind. An adventurous man, open to the concept of living life in the moment.

Some days are better than others ... It's been a long journey, but we're starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Let me recommend the best medicine in the world: a long journey, at a mild season, through a pleasant country, in easy stages.

It helps, I think, to consider ourselves on a very long journey: the main thing is to keep to the faith, to endure, to help each other when we stumble or tire, to weep and press on.

And you? When will you begin that long journey into yourself?

If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the heart of man become in its long journey toward the stars?

I wanted to do my part to help preserve that golden age of travel... I step aboard The Patron Tequila Express railcar, and I go back in time to the days when a long journey was something fun and very special.

A man knows his companion in a long journey and a little inn.

Respect your soul: don't keep repeating "I'm going to make it". Your soul already knows that, what it needs is to use the long journey to be able to grow, stretch along the horizon, touch the sky. An obsession does not help you at all to reach your objective, and even ends up taking the pleasure out of the climb. But pay attention: also, don't keep saying "it's harder than I thought", because that will make you lose your inner strength.

On a long journey of human life, faith is the best of companions; it is the best refreshment on the journey; and it is the greatest property.

I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it is the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

For a small reward, a man will hurry away on a long journey; while for eternal life, many will hardly take a single step.

Education is a lifelong journey whose destination expands as you travel.

Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end. Will the day's journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend.

All writers are exiles wherever they live and their work is a lifelong journey towards the lost land.

The journey for women, no matter what venue it is - politics, business, film - it's, it's a long journey.

The best poems take long journeys. I like poetry best that journeys--while remaining in the human scale--to the other world, which may be a place as easily overlooked as a bee's wing

A cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a long journey: The ways deep and the weather sharp, The very dead of winter.

It is impossible - now, at this point in the long journey of human culture - to avoid the sense that pain is necessity; that it is neither accident, nor malformation, nor malice, nor misunderstanding, that it is integral to the human character both in its inflicting and in its suffering, this terrible sense Tragedy alone has articulated, and will continue to articulate, and in so doing, make beautiful...

Climbing is my lifelong journey. And in the same way you go running and you have days where you really feel in tune, you have some days where you don't feel that good. It's this never-ending process. Accepting that and enjoying that for what it is, that's really where the life of climbing is.

By 2025 we expect new spacecraft designed for long journeys to allow us to begin the first ever crewed missions beyond the Moon into deep space. So we'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history. By the mid-2030s I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow and I expect to be around in see it.

What Happens When You Still Have Long COVID Symptoms?

BY KATHY KATELLA October 27, 2023

illustration of man and coronavirus, representing Long COVID

[Originally published: June 7, 2023. Updated: Oct. 27, 2023.]

Note: Information in this article was accurate at the time of original publication. Because information about COVID-19 changes rapidly, we encourage you to visit the websites of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and your state and local government for the latest information.

Long COVID, the condition where symptoms that surface after recovering from COVID-19 linger for weeks, months, or even years, is still a mystery to doctors and researchers.

The symptoms, such as chronic pain, brain fog , shortness of breath, chest pain, and intense fatigue, can be debilitating. Severe cases of Long COVID can even affect the body’s organs. But imaging tests don’t always show the origins of those symptoms. And we still don’t know why only some people develop the condition or why others can get it after a mild COVID infection.

Research has offered some insights but not enough to provide a solid understanding of how Long COVID progresses in the body. That knowledge will be essential to developing treatments.

“There is no one pill or strategy that helps everybody,” says neurologist Lindsay McAlpine, MD , director of the Yale NeuroCovid Clinic and one of many Yale Medicine specialists who care for Long COVID patients. But there is a growing understanding that people experience the condition in different ways, leading to an individualized approach to treating their symptoms.

Personalized care is the focus of the Yale New Haven Long COVID Multidisciplinary Care Center , which launched in spring 2023 and is directed by internist Lisa Sanders, MD . Although Yale Medicine has been caring for Long COVID patients since the pandemic began, the new centralized program adds a multidisciplinary approach: Patients are evaluated and, if necessary, referred to cardiologists, neurologists, pulmonologists, rheumatologists, and other specialists who have experience treating the condition. The program also offers on-site physical therapy and social work services—the latter because Long COVID can affect relationships, finances, job security, and quality of life.

Specialists in Long COVID answered questions about what we now know about the condition and what we can do about it.

1. How is Long COVID defined?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Long COVID , also known as Post-COVID Conditions, as “the continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, with these symptoms lasting for at least 2 months with no other explanation.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adds that Long COVID includes a wide range of ongoing health problems that can last weeks, months, or years. The condition might appear to be an extension of the original COVID symptoms or they may recur after the initial illness subsided, or they may be new symptoms that weren’t present during COVID. They can affect any part of the body, and serious cases may affect multiple body systems, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, and brain.

Each patient is different. Not everyone with Long COVID has had a severe case of COVID. Some acquired the condition after a mild case, and others may have developed symptoms but never tested positive for COVID. “We usually call those patients ‘presumed COVID,’” says Yale Medicine pulmonologist Denyse Lutchmansingh, MBBS , associate director of the Winchester Center for Lung Disease.

2. What are researchers learning about Long COVID?

Akiko Iwasaki, PhD , a Yale School of Medicine immunobiologist, is director of the Yale Center of Infection & Immunity and leads multiple studies investigating the pathobiology of Long COVID. Iwasaki says research has shown that Long COVID is not a single disease.

She also lists four hypotheses on her laboratory website that could explain Long COVID's initiation and progression:

  • After a person has COVID, a persistent virus or remnants of it cause chronic inflammation and ongoing symptoms.
  • The body’s disease-fighting B and T cells trigger an immune response—and subsequent inflammation—in a process called autoimmunity. The stimulus that triggers this occurs continuously in the body, making it difficult to pinpoint and shut down.
  • Latent (or dormant) viruses inside an individual reactivate. (Every person carries multiple viruses that are dormant. Under certain circumstances, they can be reactivated.)
  • Chronic changes occur in the body after the acute inflammatory response (COVID infection). Inflammation in one tissue can damage other tissues.

“Our research thus far has shown hints of all of these,” Iwasaki says. “It’s also possible that these things can happen in sequence. You may start with a persistent virus that then leads to the reactivation of latent viruses, leading to inflammation. It's also possible that some people have only one of these things going on while others have all of them.”

3. Isn’t Long COVID on the decline?

In the U.S., the Household Pulse Survey , an ongoing survey conducted by the Census Bureau and National Center for Health Statistics, suggests that the incidence of Long COVID may be decreasing. The percentage of participants who had COVID and reported having new or continuing COVID symptoms (when they responded to the survey) dropped to 11% in January 2023 from 19% in June 2022.

While there isn’t a clear explanation for the decline, Yale Medicine cardiologist Erica Spatz, MD, MHS , tracks Long COVID as part of a CDC-funded study called INSPIRE (Innovative Support For Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infections Registry). “Our data—as well as other data—suggests the incidence of prolonged or emergent symptoms is declining as more people are vaccinated and as we have been seeing milder variants,” she says.

At the same time, no one knows exactly how many people have Long COVID, although one study estimates that 65 million people worldwide have the condition , and experts say the number is probably much higher. Many cases of COVID likely have not been reported, especially with the increase in rapid testing at home since 2022 (and, thus, decreased reporting of positive infections). And people who had difficulty distinguishing between COVID and colds or similar health issues may not have sought testing or medical advice.

But, doctors are still diagnosing new cases, in addition to caring for patients who developed Long COVID at earlier points in the pandemic, adds Dr. Lutchmansingh. “Since 2020, Yale specialists have had over 1,000 referrals for patients with persistent symptoms following COVID,” she says.

4. Who is getting Long COVID?

Anyone at any age can get Long COVID. “I've seen Long COVID in every age, including plenty of 20- or 30-somethings who have no history of illness,” says Dr. McAlpine.

However, you may be at higher risk if you had a severe COVID illness, especially if you were hospitalized or in intensive care, according to the CDC. Your risk is also higher if you had a chronic disease, such as diabetes , before COVID-19, if you had multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or MIS (a rare but serious condition in which different body parts become inflamed) during or after COVID-19, or if you did not get a COVID vaccine, the CDC says.

In March 2023, a study of 800,000 people published in Health Affairs added another possible predictor: People with Long COVID were, on average, more likely to be older and women.

5. Are new cases of Long COVID milder than older ones?

This can be a difficult question to answer, partly because Long COVID data is limited. But Yale Medicine doctors say they have seen a shift as Omicron and its milder subvariants have replaced the early Alpha and Delta variants, as well as the original strain of the virus. “I think about Long COVID patients in terms of the years they were infected because they're not all the same,” says Dr. Lutchmansingh. “Anecdotally, my patients who were infected in 2021 and 2022 seem to get better faster than those who were first infected in 2020.”

While there are new patients who struggle with symptoms, “I don't have as many patients on full-time disability as I did earlier in the pandemic,” she says. Disability is a major concern among people with Long COVID, to the point where the condition is officially considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). A report in 2022 estimated 2 to 4 million Americans were out of work due to Long COVID.

6. Will I need to see a specialist for my Long COVID symptoms?

It depends on the symptoms. Because there is currently no cure for Long COVID, doctors aim to treat the symptoms associated with the condition.

As many as 200 Long COVID symptoms were identified in an international study published in 2021 in EClinicalMedicine (a Lancet journal) that surveyed more than 3,700 people with Long COVID. Many symptoms are sorted into categories by specialty, where treatments are similar to what they would be for non-COVID patients with similar symptoms.

The specialists you may need to see for Long COVID include:

Pulmonologists: These doctors have played a central role in treating both COVID and Long COVID since the early days of the pandemic, when many patients went to the hospital with urgent symptoms, such as low oxygen levels and lung issues. They treat breathing difficulties, sometimes prescribing treatments like an inhaler (a handheld device that delivers a puff of medicine into the lungs). “For some of my Long COVID patients with asthma -type symptoms, biologic treatments are making a difference,” Dr. Lutchmansingh says.

Exercise may also be beneficial for some patients, she adds. “It's just a different way of exercising than we're accustomed to,” she says. While rehabilitation for non-COVID pulmonary patients may involve a push to build muscle and strength, that type of exercise method can worsen symptoms for some Long COVID patients. “So, we have to figure out a way to get them to exercise that targets their needs but isn't detrimental to them,” she says.

Neurologists: "Long COVID can cause a variety of neurological symptoms, and one patient can have multiple types," Dr. McAlpine says. “There can be a constellation of symptoms.” She has treated patients for headaches, including new or worsening migraine symptoms . Some have developed neuropathy, a disease of the peripheral nerves that causes numbness or weakness.

But the most common neurological symptoms Dr. McAlpine sees are cognitive difficulties, including issues with attention and memory recall, and language and executive functioning. “Patients will say, ‘I can't find my words. I lose track of my thoughts in the middle of my sentences. I have to write everything down. I can't multitask anymore,’” she says. “With the Alpha and Delta variants, the cognitive impairment was quite severe around the acute illness. Then, it would very slowly get better.”

Gastroenterologists: Some patients report bloating, constipation , diarrhea, vomiting, and other signs of stomach distress. In March 2023, a study in Nature Communications reported that people who had COVID experienced significantly more gastrointestinal symptoms a year after their infection than people who had not had the virus. The study compared almost 150,000 people who were infected in the early days of the pandemic with 5.6 million similar patients who had not had the virus. In the first group, conditions, including GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and peptic ulcer disease, were among the most commonly reported symptoms.

Cardiologists: Cardiovascular symptoms are less common than some in other specialties, accounting for about 5% to 10% of Long COVID issues, explains Dr. Spatz. Acute COVID can lead to myocarditis, which causes significant inflammation of the heart muscle, she adds. It also can cause other cardiovascular problems, including thrombosis and acute stress to the heart, resulting in cardiomyopathy or arrhythmia . “We are learning to look for the potential for any of those issues to have occurred and their residual effects,” she says.

Heart specialists also care for Long COVID patients who develop chest pain, palpitations, or exercise intolerance, or those who may have a cardiovascular syndrome, such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a blood circulation disorder that causes lightheadedness or fainting when standing up from a lying down position.

Another potential concern is heart rate fluctuation, which can be caused by tachycardia (a fast heart rate) and bradycardia (a slow heart rate). Yet another issue is a chest pain syndrome that may be related to endothelial dysfunction, in which the arteries become narrow even though there is no blockage.

7. What about Long COVID symptoms that aren’t easy to categorize?

Not every symptom falls into just one category. A challenging one is what’s called “post-exertional malaise (PEM),” which Dr. McAlpine describes as a kind of “energy crash” or worsening of other symptoms, such as fatigue, brain fog, and muscle pain after exercise—even if the activity was mild. PEM can range in severity. “Some people will walk up the stairs and then not be able to get out of bed for the rest of the day. Others will go on a 10-minute walk or run errands and then be out of commission for a couple of days,” she says.

Physical problems like PEM can lead to anxiety and depression. “It can be a very scary experience,” Dr. McAlpine says. “People feel disoriented, and this can cause new mental health issues. It can be a long road.” In these cases, mental health treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications, can help, she adds.

“Another critical issue is sleep,” says Dr. McAlpine, who has referred patients to sleep specialists. They often come back with varying diagnoses, including insomnia and sleep apnea, although it can be difficult to say whether Long COVID is the cause. “Patients who have had COVID are sensitive to sleep deprivation and disruption , and sleep is so critical to cognitive function, to healing, to headaches—to everything.”

8. With so many different symptoms, how can I be sure I have Long COVID?

There is no laboratory test to confirm Long COVID. And blood tests, chest X-rays, and electrocardiograms may show normal results even if a person has serious symptoms.

To diagnose Long COVID, a clinician will ask a patient about their health history, perform a physical examination, and gather information about how their COVID infection was diagnosed. There is an understanding that some Long COVID patients can’t prove they had the virus, either because they don’t have records of proper testing or they didn’t even know they had COVID.

Tests may range from a routine assessment of blood pressure to cognitive testing to a 6-minute walking test and/or a one-minute sit-to-stand test. Depending on symptoms, the doctor may order diagnostic tests such as bloodwork and a chest X-ray.

A key part of the diagnosis is ruling out other conditions, Dr. Lutchmansingh adds. “That’s one of the most important things about having an internist who coordinates the care of Long COVID patients,” she says.

9. Can Paxlovid help Long COVID patients?

There is not enough evidence to show that Paxlovid , the primary treatment for COVID, is an effective treatment for Long COVID. But, Iwasaki and cardiologist and scientist Harlan Krumholz, MD, SM , are co-leading a randomized clinical trial to investigate whether it could help some patients.

“Studying Paxlovid is important because people with Long COVID have no therapies available to them,” Iwasaki says. “Even though we don't understand fully what the underlying mechanisms of the disease are, it's important that we start the trial and learn who benefits from specific medications.”

Iwasaki and Dr. Krumholz believe that Long COVID may have different pathologies in different patients, which suggests that not everyone would benefit from the same treatments. “We're collecting blood samples before, during, and after Paxlovid delivery, so we will be able to classify people who respond positively to it versus those who respond negatively—or not at all,” Iwasaki says.

Participants can give samples at specified locations and otherwise participate in the study from home. (The trial is currently available to people who live in Connecticut, New York, and Florida, and it may expand to other states.)

Once such classifications are made, the researchers will be able to recruit people for a larger trial to learn more about those who have a positive response to Paxlovid. “We're looking for the kind of signal that will help us administer the proper therapies to people,” Iwasaki says. “Even if it benefits 10% of people, that's still a lot.”

(Anyone wishing to participate in the clinical trial can email [email protected] for more information.)

10. Can vaccines prevent or help treat Long COVID?

It’s unclear whether vaccines can prevent Long COVID. Researchers are still looking for answers. “There have been so many studies on this topic,” Iwasaki says. “Now, the consensus is that there is about a 30% reduction of risk of Long COVID in those who were vaccinated prior to infection.”

While the 30% figure is based on prevention, vaccination may also impact the severity of a person’s Long COVID symptoms, Iwasaki says, adding that more research is needed.

11. Can I recover from Long COVID?

There is research showing that many people do get better. A study from Israel published in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ ) in January 2023 found most cases of Long COVID in almost 300,000 children and adults who had mild COVID infections resolved within a year of diagnosis. The research covered a period between March 2020 and October 2021, before the Omicron variant emerged, and it included vaccinated and unvaccinated participants.

Anecdotally, Dr. Lutchmansingh says she has two sets of patients who remain in her pulmonary practice. One includes people whose condition has improved, even if they are not back to their pre-COVID baseline. “The other includes those who continue to have difficulty. These are patients who still have multiple symptoms, including pulmonary issues, fatigue, and neurological problems,” she says.

In both groups, there aren't many patients who feel they’ve gotten better to the point where they forgot they had COVID, Dr. Lutchmansingh adds. “Their body knows something happened to them, but they're not as debilitated as they were in 2020 or 2021,” she says.

12. COVID is no longer considered a public health emergency. Does that mean Long COVID will go away?

It’s impossible to know what Long COVID will look like in a year or five years, Iwasaki explains.

With Omicron, Long COVID is seemingly less common, and the severity may be lower. “But we'll have to see,” she says, noting that while the public health emergency may have ended, the SARS-CoV-2 virus is unpredictable. “If a new variant comes along that significantly evades immune responses, then we don't know what the outcome would be,” she says.

13. What about those who think Long COVID shouldn't be taken seriously?

Yale Medicine doctors say it’s important to know that Long COVID is a real condition, and people with it can benefit from medical attention. “There's a proportion of people who have difficulty accepting Long COVID because the science hasn't caught up with it,” says Dr. Lutchmansingh, adding that it can be frustrating when a patient is reporting symptoms, but clinical testing doesn’t show any abnormality.

“I don't think that's a reason not to believe the patient,” she says. “We want to affirm that this is a real condition and let people know we are working on strategies and treatments to help them.”

Deuteronomy 14:24-26 New King James Version

24  But if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or ( A ) if the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, when the Lord your God has blessed you, 25  then you shall exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses. 26  And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the Lord your God, and you shall ( B ) rejoice, you and your household.

Hear the Journey Tune Steve Perry Rerecorded With Steve Lukather’s Son

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Not long after their 2022 wedding, Trev Lukather (son of Toto guitarist Steve Lukather) and Madison Cain-Lukather (daughter of Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain) were playing some vintage tunes on a road trip. They came across Journey’s 1986 song “It Could Have Been You,” which neither of them had ever heard. “We were just blown away,” Trev Lukather tells Rolling Stone . “I loved the funkiness of it, and Steve Perry ‘s vocals were just insane. We kept playing that song on repeat.”

Trev Lukather was just nine years old when he first met Perry at the studio of songwriter Randy Goodrum, co-writer of Perry’s 1984 solo hits “Foolish Heart” and “Oh Sherrie.” They reconnected 11 years later, once again via Goodrum, when Trev came to Steakhouse Studios in North Hollywood to play on one of his father’s solo albums. They started chatting, and Trev invited Perry into his car to hear some music he’d created on his own. “He was like, ‘Oh my gosh, man, this is great,'” Lukather recalls. “‘When are you going to be in the studio next?’ He wound up coming by the studio. And from that moment on, Steve has just been a mentor to me, along with my dad, and just a dear brother.”

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“It’s bedhead, bro,” Lukather responds. “I wake up like this, as people say.”

The conversation quickly drifts to Perry’s initial impressions of the young Lukather. “When I hear somebody that’s musically got talent, just God-given talent and not somebody who wants to be something, but truly has got this drive in them, I can’t stay away from it,” says Perry. “And that’s what happened when I heard Trev play the first time. I thought, ‘Jesus, man, this kid has taken his DNA to the next level.'”

Early in their relationship, after watching Lukather shred on the guitar, Perry gave him a crucial piece of advice that stuck with him. “He was like, ‘Let me ask you a question,” Lukather recalls. “‘What do you want in the front row: guys or girls?’ I was 20. I was like, ‘Steve, of course I want girls in the front row.’ He said, ‘Stop playing that and play front-row licks.’ That’s three words that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. And he said, ‘Sing with that guitar. If you sing with that guitar, you will have girls in the front row. If you shred, you’ll have guys in the front row.’

The years that followed weren’t always easy, however. He recorded an entire album with an early band, but they broke up before it ever came out due to behind-the-scenes drama. The bitter situation soured him on groups until he randomly came across singer Emmett Lee Stang’s cover of “In Your Eyes” on Instagram. He sent him a DM, they got on the phone, and decided to try making music together. Around that time, he connected with Nic Collins on a trip to Miami. “We first met at a Phil Collins concert in 2018,” says Lukather. “And when went out for dinner years later with his girlfriend Isabella, we were instant bros.”

Lukather, Collins, and Stang dubbed themselves the Effect, and they released the singles “Toxic Envy,” “Something Wrong,” and “Unwanted” last year. When they started thinking about songs to cut for a full album, Lukather played Collins and Stang “It Could Have Been You.” “They were like, ‘What is this?'” Lukather says. “Their reaction was the same as mine. That’s what sparked the idea of redoing it. I thought it would be sacrilegious to try to touch the greatest hits of Journey. Leave that to the gems that they are. But I was like, ‘This could be something that we can make our own and be really cool.'”

It’s also a great story, obviously, which I’m going to lay onto the crowd before we play it.”

Northern lights may be visible over Washington this weekend

This 2019 image from the SkunkBayWeather.com camera in Hansville shows a view of the northern lights. Forecasters say that aurora borealis may be visible in the Pacific Northwest Friday through Sunday nights, with best viewing around midnight.

Washington state residents may get a glimpse at the northern lights through the weekend starting tonight, thanks to unusually strong solar activity and clear skies in the forecast across the Northwest.

On Thursday  NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported  that one of the largest and most powerful clusters of solar flares witnessed since 2005 erupted from the Sun’s surface, and that the resulting geomagnetic storm it produces is expected to sweep across earth’s northern latitudes for the next two days.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, may be seen as far south as northern California and even Alabama, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.

"This is an unusual and potentially historic event," Clinton Wallace, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said in a  statement .

The northern lights are the most benign result of solar activity, according to USA TODAY. Strong solar storms – including the rare category of G4s, which are possible for May 11 – can also disrupt some radio communications, harm satellites and even knock out power systems, forecasters warned.

The Space Weather Prediction Center only rarely issues "severe" storm watches. The last time such an alert was issued was January 2005. "Watches at this level are very rare," the center said.

The colorful aurora forms when particles flowing from the sun get caught up in Earth's magnetic field. The particles interact with molecules of atmospheric gases to cause the famed glowing green and reddish colors of the aurora.

The best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight, looking to the north from a location that is further away from city lights, according to NOAA. The best viewing conditions for the aurora are expected across the northern Plains and the Pacific Northwest, where mainly cloud-free conditions will lead to great views of the night sky,  AccuWeather  meteorologist Brian Lada said.

Reporting from USA TODAY was used in this report.

When could you see the northern lights? Aurora forecast for over a dozen states this weekend

you still have a long journey to go

Read the latest on the northern lights this weekend: Saturday's forecast says parts of U.S. could see auroras .

A series of strong solar flares that the sun has been emitting since Wednesday morning could cause the northern lights to become visible this weekend to a wide swath of the United States.

The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) hurtling toward Earth prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to issue a rare  Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch on Thursday for the first time in 19 years. The geomagnetic storms that the CMEs would produce pose a limited threat to our communications, but they can also trigger the aurora borealis, better known as the northern lights.

And because the sun is at the height of its 11-year-cycle, the auroras have a very good chance of being seen by more Americans than usual .

Here's what to know about the northern lights, and when and where you may catch a glimpse of them this weekend.

Good news on northern lights: Experts predict years of awesome aurora viewing

What are the northern lights?

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph, according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.

Geomagnetic storm: Solar storm is powerful enough to disrupt communications: Why NOAA says not to worry

When might the northern lights be most visible?

This week's solar activity brings with it the increased possibility of seeing the aurora across the U.S.

Though the timing is uncertain and the northern lights can be a particularly fickle forecast , officials at NOAA said the coronal mass ejections could reach Earth as early as Friday evening into Saturday, Shawn Dahl, a space weather forecaster at SWPC, told reporters Friday morning during a news briefing.

Experts from NOAA said auroras could be visible into Sunday.

The best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time). These hours expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases, according to NOAA.

Where might the northern lights be best seen in the US?

The northern half of the U.S. is forecasted to be in the view path where the auroras may be most visible.

The best chances appear to be in northern Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the majority of North Dakota, according to SWPC's  experimental Aurora viewline . The visibility for viewing will also depend on local weather conditions and city lights.

Experts at NOAA said the northern lights may even be visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California. If all else fails, experts even recommend taking a photo of the night sky with your cell phone – you never known what you may capture.

"Things that the human eye can't see, your phone can, so it'll be interesting to see just how far south we're getting aurora images this time," said Brent Gordon, Chief of Space Weather Services Branch for SWPC, on the Friday call with reporters.

The National Weather Service on Friday shared an aurora forecast for Friday night and early Saturday morning, showing more than a dozen states with at least a chance to see the lights.

How does the solar maximum influence the northern lights?

Explosive bursts of radiation known as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (eruptions of solar material) drive the geometric storms, releasing solar particles and electromagnetic radiation toward our planet.

As the frequency of coronal mass ejections increases at the height of its 11-year cycle,  which NASA said is expected to be in 2025 , electromagnetic activity on the sun peaks. What that so-called "solar maximum" means for us is that the risk increases for disruption to satellite signals, radio communications, internet and electrical power grids.

'God's Hand' revealed in cosmos: Telescope images reveal 'cloudy, ominous structure' known as 'God's Hand' in Milky Way

Last December , a powerful burst of energy created the largest solar flare that NASA had detected since 2017.

The last G4 level solar storm hit Earth in March , one of only three storms of that severity observed since 2019, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center .

Just like in March, the upcoming solar storm will have particles flowing from the sun that get caught up in Earth's magnetic field, causing colorful auroras to form as they interact with molecules of atmospheric gases. The resulting glowing green and reddish colors of the aurora may be quite a sight to see.

IR-2024-133, May 6, 2024

WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service today reminded the 1 million people who didn’t file their tax year 2020 returns they may be eligible for a refund if they file by the May 17 deadline.

The IRS estimates more than $1 billion in refunds remain unclaimed because people haven’t filed their 2020 tax returns yet. The state-by-state table below shows how many people are potentially eligible for these refunds, and the average median refund in each state.

There's no penalty for failure to file if a refund is due. However, a return claiming a refund must be filed within three years of its due date for a refund to be allowed. After the expiration of the three-year period, the refund statute generally prevents the issuance of a refund check and the application of any credits, including overpayments of estimated taxes or withholding amounts, to other tax years that are underpaid.

For 2020 tax returns, people have a little more time than usual to file their claim for refunds. Typically, the filing deadline to claim old refunds falls around the tax deadline of April 15. However, the 2020 filing deadline was pushed to May 17, due to COVID-19, making the three-year window deadline for 2020 unfiled returns May 17, 2024. The IRS issued Notice 2023-21 on Feb. 27, 2023, providing legal guidance on claims required by the postponed deadline.

Many people who didn’t file may be eligible for more

By missing out on filing a tax return, people stand to lose more than just their refund of taxes withheld or paid during 2020. The estimate does not include credits that non-filers may be eligible to receive. Credits include the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) , the Recovery Rebate Credit or other credits that may be applicable.

Many low- and moderate-income workers may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For 2020, the EITC was worth as much as $6,660 for taxpayers with qualifying children. The EITC helps individuals and families whose incomes are below certain thresholds.

The IRS has previously reminded those who may be entitled to the COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credit in 2020 that time is running out to file a tax return and claim their money. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit for individuals who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments, distributed in 2020 and 2021.

Plan to file? IRS offers options to get key documents

Gathering all the necessary documents and forms to file a return for 2020 may take some time. People should start as soon as possible to make sure they have enough time to file before the May 17 deadline for 2020 refunds. Here are some options:

  • Request copies of key documents. Taxpayers who are missing Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 for the years 2020, 2021 or 2022 can request copies from their employer, bank or other payers.
  • Use Get Transcript Online at IRS.gov. Taxpayers who have lost contact with their employer or other payers can order a free wage and income transcript at IRS.gov using the Get Transcript Online tool. For many taxpayers, this is by far the quickest and easiest option.
  • Request a transcript. Another option is for people to file Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return , with the IRS to request a “wage and income transcript.” A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns received by the IRS, such as Forms W-2, 1099, 1098, Form 5498 and IRA contribution information. Taxpayers can use the information from the transcript to file their tax return. But plan ahead – these written requests can take several weeks; people are strongly urged to try the other options first.
  • Current and prior years’ tax forms. Tax year 2020 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and instructions are available on the IRS.gov Forms, instructions & publications page or by calling toll-free 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Taxpayers who are unsure if they are required to file a return can visit Do I need to file a tax return? or refer to Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) .

Free help is available

For individuals who have not filed a federal income a tax return for 2020, the IRS offers tools and resources on IRS.gov. Free support includes the Interactive Tax Assistant (ITA) , information on What to do if you haven’t filed your return , and Frequently asked questions and answers (FAQs) .

Qualified taxpayers can also access free tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs . Use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887 to locate the nearest VITA site.

The IRS also reassures taxpayers there is no penalty for claiming a refund on a late-filed tax return. Direct deposit is recommended as the quickest and simplest way to receive a tax refund.

State-by-state estimates of individuals who may be due 2020 income tax refunds

The IRS estimated the number of individuals in each state and the median potential refund a filer may be entitled to receive. The actual refund amount will vary based on a household’s tax situation.
